In this two-part mini-series we are focusing on health systems strengthening- what it is, how to do it and what action is needed to ensure that the approach is embedded in discussions at key global events and discussion platforms. This episode follows on from the first episode from the Centre for Health Systems Strengthening at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (episode 60) which focused on the health diplomacy and how researchers can advocate for health systems strengthening approaches and community voices in health diplomacy spaces. Today we hear from two advocates who have been acting within health diplomacy spaces and as researchers. We hear from Emmanuel Zaizay, who is affected by the Neglected Tropical Disease Buruli Ulcer, about his experience of growing skills and capacity to communicate the needs of people affected by stigmatising neglected tropical diseases. We also hear from Maurine Murenga, a TB advocate who has represented the TB community in high level UN meetings. She is open and honest about both the strengths and opportunities of being an advocate, but also what this means to her on a personal level. Her open reflections are really critical to how researchers function when engaging with communities.Episode guests:Dr Kerry Millington - Research Uptake Manager, Liverpool of Tropical MedicineKerry has been working in global health for over 20 years with a keen focus on ending the tuberculosis epidemic. A key part of her work is developing trusted relationships with range of stakeholders to work in partnership, in collaboration and in a coordinated way ensuring the academic and health professional voice credibly informs decisions that impact on health. This can range from co-creating research ideas to influencing policy and political commitments. A key stakeholder to engage with is the voice of TB survivors and advocates to accelerate action for those in most need of innovations in TB care and prevention to transform lives. Maurine Murenga - Coordinator of TB Women GlobalMaurine Murenga is a passionate advocate for the health, development and human rights of women and children. Maurine's passion for advocacy is driven by her lived experience, and the inequality and vulnerability that young women and adolescent girls experience in her community.Maurine is currently the coordinator of TB Women Global, Board Member of Unitaid, Friend of the Fight US and EGPAF Kenya. She is a former board member of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and is also a member of WHO's Global Accelerator for Pediatric Formulations Advisory and Union Working Group Gender Equity in TB. Today, our world is facing an unprecedented number of challenges: climate and demographic change, COVID-19, and a lack of decent work and social security, among others. Poverty, inequality, and hunger are on the rise. So, what can we do to shift gears and start moving forward again? A new initiative has been launched by the UN Secretary General with ILO coordinating support to address these challenges. The Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions aims to increase the level and coordination of the multilateral system's efforts to help countries create 400 million decent jobs in both developed and emerging economies, and to extend social protection to half the world's population who are currently excluded. To learn more about this, in this episode we interview ILO experts, Valérie Schmitt, Deputy Director of the Social Protection Department, and Jean-François Klein, Senior Administrator, Employment Policy Department.

Sharmin Habib, OD, optometrist, wellness advocate, and Co-Founder of Umay provides an overview of digital eye strain and how her company is working to reduce it for everyone.   The innovative, patented technology developed by Habib's company is predicated upon years of thermal therapy research with a focus on restoring eye health. Umay's proprietary ‘Thermal Meditation' can assist digital device users who seek to reset the effects of screen time via relaxation of the mind and restoration of the organic function of our eyes. Umay was selected as a finalist of the Global Accelerator program.   The eye doctor and relaxation innovator discuss how she and her brother combined their skills to launch Umay. Habib states that many of us may have regular symptoms such as itchy, red, burning or dry eyes, which could very well be an indication that digital eye strain is occurring. With daily average screen usage times accelerating up to nearly 11 hours per day, Habib says that digital eye strain puts excess stress on the oil glands found along the eyelid margin. Remarkably, our blink rate is reduced by up to 70% when we are looking into screens. And as she states, it is these needed blinks that help pump out healthy oils from those glands that help keep our tears from evaporating or drying out. Heat, Habib states, is the way to get those oil glands working again to do their job in protecting the eyes. Habib's brother's own eye problems were the inspiration for them to find a better way to apply heat, in a controlled manner, that would be efficient and easy, and allow those suffering from eye strain to find relief.    Habib states that most eye doctors who direct patients to use warm compresses over their eyes for eye strain report that many of their patients are noncompliant. With the difficulty in regulating temperature, mess, and impracticality, patients just simply were not making the effort. These problems of use were important considerations in the design of Umay's device.    Habib talks about the sensory experience and she explains the many benefits of their device, providing feedback they have received from their users. She explains their other device integrations such as meditation experiences with the guided breath, and she details how their device can vary the temperature and how it can help users enhance focus, at the moment, on their sensory experience. And Habib discusses how this mindfulness before sleep can create a relaxed state that can improve sleep quality.    Umay's product is designed to easily fit into an individual's bedtime, wellness routine, or during the day whenever they feel the need.

There are so many hours in a day, but we also know that everyone in the world gets the exact same number of hours. So how do some people do so much? My guest today, Jen Groover, knows. Early on in her entrepreneurial career she realized that she had to leverage herself to be able to do more than trade dollars for hours. She does this through licensing, delegating, team building and having the right supports in place for all of her different businesses. What more details on how she does it? She is more than happy to share that with you through her Jumpstart Connect Pop-up store in NYC. Not in NYC? Soon there will be a virtual version online too!   Show notes: Jen Groover is a serial entrepreneur, speaker, author, and media contributor. Jen got involved in the fitness industry straight out of college when she graduated in 1995 but quickly realized that she needed to find some way to leverage herself and her time so she would not be limited to trading hours for dollars. A few of Jen’s quotes from the episode: "Once I'm comfortable I need to make myself uncomfortable again." "Licensing is a huge part of my business model." “I believe Entrepreneurs are a huge part of healing the world.” “Fear is the thing that holds people back the most. The more you can educate someone, the more you can eliminate fear.” Jen is also the author of the book What If and Why Not. This book focuses on the psychology of taking what is negative in your life and finding the positive spin. It was published in 2013. Her second book, #Empowered, will be coming out in the fall of 2017. Right now she is working on her third book, Operator's Manual for Life. Now that sounds like something we could all use now and then. Jen was also recently nominated as a UN delegate to the first ever Global Accelerator for the Global Entrepreneurs Council. For this council, each person chooses a topic that they are very good at and another that they do not know much about. Sometimes a person's ignorance in a certain field can actually bring breakthroughs from the questions they ask. The field that Jen chose as something she didn't know much about was health care. These discussions bring more innovation to the solutions around specific problems. You can connect with Jen Groover via her website at www.jengroover.com. "We Are Often Playing Small To Our Own Potential" Jen Groover From her earliest memories of being tied to her chair as a young girl by “Sister Elizabeth” for being too curious, Jen Groover she knew she was intrigued by conversation and networking. In college, Jen studied education and psychology. During that time she expanded and shifted her approach to creativity and begun to apply it to her work. It just so happened that Jen's first business venture was in the world of fitness. Jen had experienced the high that comes from teaching (after facing her fears of no-one showing up for her first class) and realized that she wanted to experience the energy and high of creating something new and partnered with an existing company to open a gym space.  But that was just the beginning. During this part of our conversation, we also revisit the hey day of fitness and step aerobics. It so happened Gin Miller and myself were the videos she was using for inspiration. I love that this has now come full circle and Jen is one of my mentors and reminds me how to show up fully in the world every day. Jen shares marvelous advice on how to get out of your head and into the world. How to face your fears, value your own ideas and take big action steps to put your dreams in motion. We discussed "fear" and how Jen now has more fear of regret, than fear of failure and I too am the same way. We also talk about the glass ceiling often being our own belief system. Jen talks about creativity assets are dropping out of the sky every day, but it is not until we take action that those assets can be turned into as many verticals and companies as you have time for. I ask Jen about where it is that she finds her inspiration. It was interesting to hear Jen talk about Reebok being one of the companies that she looked at to learn how to create, execute and repeat. It was then at QVC she discovered the importance of telling stories that would sell into people’s desires. It was here that she learnt the art of pitching and positioning for other brands, she then put that education behind her own company. Jen is also an expert at partnering with strong people around her to move great ideas faster and more efficiently. Take a listen and be inspired. There are so many nuggets of wisdom that can be applied into your life, whatever you are doing and whatever your dreams. She's also behind Leader Girlz, which teaches young girls the importance of empowerment through play, through her brand, and has another jewlery brand called Empowered by Jen Groover.   Jen was also nominated as a UN Delegate to the first Global Accelerator for the Global Entrepreneurs Council. A desire to control my own fate to the point which I could.   [04:05] In college, the idea of career path and the thought of getting a job is not appealing to me.     [05:57] Your journey for the Butler Bag, your first product – how you went from concept to creation and what are your initial challenges?   [06:25] I have twins and one day I was digging through my bag but I could not find my credit card and they were screaming and crying.  I thought to myself – there has to be a better way. [07:25] You don’t complain about something unless you do something about it. [07:37] I trained myself to be inventive as I am not a designer, I can’t draw and I’m not an engineer.   [08:08] Six months later, while unloading the dish washer and from a bird’s eye view I looked at the dish washer tray and everything on the tray was standing straight.  This is how I want my handbag to be.   [09:20] When someone looks at something, they either think: i) someone has thought of it already or ii) why haven’t I thought of that (you probably have a winning product there).   [09:34] The challenges -  mindset and not knowing what to do. [09:59] The obstacles -  I have never done this before. [11:19] When the first shipment came, 95% of them were not the quality of leather I ordered.  Had to figure out how to salvage that mistake. [12:44] What are your distribution, manufacturing and pricing strategies? [13:06] I had to figure out the cost and have a price range that is affordable.  Used Kate Spade in this model. [14:14] Understand the media inside-out.  Hired a trainer who taught me everything about the media and how to tell my story.   [18:40] When was the right time to move to the next project, i.e. Leader Girlz? [19:03] Butler Bag was running itself.  I had a team in place and started doing licensing deals which gave away a lot of responsibilities.   [19:32] I was inspired when I took my daughters to Disneyland when they were 3 years old.  I was telling stories to my daughters that I didn’t believe in.  There must be something more relevant now. [20:27] How do you foster entrepreneurship to a girl through play? [22:12] Teaching the mindset of leadership, empowerment and that uniqueness is a power. [23:33] To take Leader Girlz to the next level and eventually to a franchise model.   [25:20] How do you prioritize?   To be clear on what I really want, what I’m good at and what I’m not, to be very transparent about that.   To acknowledge that I can’t do it all myself. I have a supportive partner and we complement each other.  Partnership is important in order to scale myself and to leverage. To delegate well. A good leader empowers people instead of manage people. Take time to rejuvenate.   [28:11] Why mindset is one of the key staples to success?   It is the fundamental foundation to success, not knowledge.  The problems in mindset are the lack of self-worth and lack of self-belief.     Key points To become aware of where our belief is coming from.  To question everything.   Taking all those negative beliefs and reverse them to positive. The “How Powerful I Am” statement – say it, think it, feel it! Mindset is the driving force of everything. Caroline took a leap from a career in investment banking to one launching a high-end luxury retail line that sold in more than 400 stores worldwide from Neiman Marcus to Bloomingdales. But that was only the first chapter in this now-established entrepreneur’s startup career. When this first company failed two years later, Carolyn wasn’t deterred. Instead, she launched a multi-million dollar interactive marketing agency, Cake Communications. And, she also used the failure as an opportunity to give a very real and very vulnerable TEDx talk. Today Carolyn is running global women’s collaborative accelerator, Circular Board, a virtual, 12-week program. “[As] an entrepreneur myself, I’ve helped raise billions of dollars in capital through my work as an investment banker for JPMorgan and as founder of Cake Communications,” she says. In her role, Carolyn teaches others how to do the same, and she serves as an advocate for women in business, connecting female entrepreneurs to the capital, resources, mentors and partners to fuel their growth. Additionally, Carolyn serves on the board of the Texas A&M Mays College of Business, as a member of the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network and as a United Nations Global Accelerator delegate. She is the recipient of the American Express Micro to Millions Award, a Sam Walton Emerging Entrepreneur and an Entrepreneur magazine 2016 “Woman to Watch.” She’s also been featured in The Huffington Post, Fortune, Time and on MSNBC, among others. In episode 14 of I Want Her Job: The Podcast, Editor Polina Selyutin speaks with Carolyn about the lessons learned from launching two businesses; her goals for growing Circular Board; and the vital importance of connection, collaboration and curiosity. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN TODAY'S SHOW: Who Run The World? Girls!: “All of us reap the rewards when women succeed. It’s job creation. It’s economic growth. It’s social impact. There are so many different benefits that we achieve when women succeed. It isn’t just about gender equality, but about quality of life for each and every person.” Breaking Barriers: Carolyn discusses the difficulty many female entrepreneurs face when they look to relocate for an accelerator program, and shares how Circular Board is the ultimate answer to that conundrum. Get There Quicker: For entrepreneurs, Carolyn advises not to compromise on the big vision and to seek funding earlier to achieve that vision. “What happens is [women] compromise that vision because they don’t have the resources on hand today, and they start to bootstrap in a way that changes that path.” Ladies Leading: “Women are incredible leaders. We are really empathetic. We understand our customers in a real unique way, which I think is a huge advantage,” Carolyn says. Give And Get: During Carolyn’s business experience, she noticed women didn’t ask for enough help often enough. She addresses that at Circular Board via a “Give and Get” exercise that encourages women to practice asking for help. On Diversity: “When you bring that to the table it creates this infusion of energy, and people start bouncing ideas off one another and bring a different lens to a problem,” Carolyn says. The Hardest Part Of Starting A Business: Carolyn believes the middle stage is the hardest part – when your company is growing and one needs the capital to hire, but doesn’t have the funds yet to do so. Let It Go: How transparency, honesty and letting go of fear can liberate an entrepreneur to grow even faster. Word Of Mouth Cultivation: Carolyn shares how she used referrals to grow her businesses and reduce marketing costs. That X Factor: “Ask others what you’re good at,” Carolyn says. Hearing what others list as your strengths is a great way to find out what you might be taking for granted that actually can help set you – and your business – apart.
