John Anthony Castro, a 2024 GOP U.S. Presidential Candidate who notably sued Donald Trump, has been found guilty on all 33 counts related to Federal Tax Fraud. Castro, a frequent guest on The NeoLiberal Round Podcast, had gained attention by suing Trump for violating Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. His legal challenges were discussed extensively on the podcast series “Castro v. Trump,” where he was a key contributor. According to Erin Dooley at the Media Affairs Office at the Texas Department of Justice, in a press release stated that Following a five-day bench trial before Senior U.S. District Judge Terry R Means, he was convicted on all 33 counts of assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent return and was immediately taken into custody” (Press Release  by the DOJ on Friday May 24, 2024: https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/mansfield-tax-preparer-convicted-33-counts-tax-fraud-after-bench-trial).   Despite his high-profile legal battles, Castro's lawsuits in multiple states were largely dismissed. In January, he filed an appeal in Florida against Judge Eileen Cannon's decision to dismiss his case and sought her recusal from all cases involving Trump, citing bias. Concurrently, Castro faced his own legal troubles, being indicted on Federal Tax Fraud charges.   In January 2024, The NeoLiberal Round Podcast released an episode featuring Castro, where he vehemently denied any wrongdoing related to the indictment. He explained the errors leading to the charges and stated that he had taken steps to correct them. Castro expressed confidence in his ability to clear his name and reiterated his commitment to his presidential campaign.   On April 16, 2024, Castro provided an update, maintaining his innocence and preparing for his May 20th hearing. He indicated plans to testify and expressed a desire to step away from politics afterward. However, following the hearing, on May 20th, Castro was arrested and taken into custody.   The Texas State Department of Justice released details of the ruling, revealing that Castro, owner of the virtual tax preparation business Castro & Company, had falsely inflated client tax returns. Convicted on all 33 counts of assisting in the preparation of fraudulent returns, Castro now faces up to 99 years in federal prison, with each count carrying a potential three-year sentence... Milfred and Hands play and comment on U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson's latest political ad in which he blames the media for getting President Joe Biden elected. That's not what Johnson said last fall, when he was caught on camera at a GOP rally saying Trump lost because not enough Republicans in Wisconsin voted for him, and that nothing was obviously skewed with the 2020 election here. Johnson, R-Oshkosh, once a tea-party darling, said he wasn't going to run for reelection this year and used to support term limits. But he's broken that promise to voters, seeking to become another lifer congressman. Milfred and Hands wonder what happened to the free-trade supporter and deficit hawk who has turned into Trump's biggest apologist, constantly looking back to the past election rather than focusing on Wisconsin's future. Johnson is considered the most vulnerable GOP U.S. senator in the country this fall -- yet as an entrenched incumbent he still stands a strong chance to win, our opinionated political podcasters say. Reflecting on his fifty-year effort to steer the Grand Old Party toward black voters, Memphis power broker George W. Lee declared, "Somebody had to stay in the Republican Party and fight." As Joshua D. Farrington, Instructor in African & African-American Studies at Eastern Kentucky University, recounts in Black Republicans and the Transformation of the GOP (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016), Lee was one of many black Republican leaders who remained loyal after the New Deal inspired black voters to switch their allegiance from the "party of Lincoln" to the Democrats. Ideologically and demographically diverse, the ranks of twentieth-century black Republicans included Southern patronage dispensers like Lee and Robert Church, Northern critics of corrupt Democratic urban machines like Jackie Robinson and Archibald Carey, civil rights agitators like Grant Reynolds and T. R. M. Howard, elected politicians like U.S. Senator Edward W. Brooke and Kentucky state legislator Charles W. Anderson, black nationalists like Floyd McKissick and Nathan Wright, and scores of grassroots organizers from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Black Republicans believed that a two-party system in which both parties were forced to compete for the African American vote was the best way to obtain stronger civil rights legislation. Though they were often pushed to the sidelines by their party's white leadership, their continuous and vocal inner-party dissent helped moderate the GOP's message and platform through the 1970s. And though often excluded from traditional narratives of U.S. politics, black Republicans left an indelible mark on the history of their party, the civil rights movement, and twentieth-century political development. Farrington marshals an impressive amount of archival material at the national, state, and municipal levels in the South, Midwest, and West, as well as in the better-known Northeast, to open up new avenues in African American political history.
