Chris Malleo is a former Northwestern University and professional football player. After retiring from paying, he became head coach at The Peddie School in New Jersey, and led a perennial underachieving team to a #1 national ranking through a system of culture, belief, and standards. While at Peddie, Chris hired an incredible coach named Frankie Kineavy. Frankie was non verbal, and had suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, yet soon Chris, his staff and his players realized that while Frankie was not your typical football coach, he was one of the best leaders any of them had ever met. Chris tells that story in his new book The ChairLeader, a best selling book on leadership, connection, and courage, featuring a foreword by Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright and endorsements from bestselling author Jon Gordon, Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney, and Jersey Mike's Founder and CEO Peter Cancro. In our discussion, John and Chris discuss his journey to becoming a coach, the incredible impact Frankie had on the Peddie program, and the leadership lessons that he retells in his book. In this episode of the show, Jamie and Stu look back at Day 19 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which saw the Black Caps of New Zealand take on the hosts of Sri Lanka. They also look ahead to a day with massive implications in Group 1 of the Super 8s, on which South Africa meets the West Indies and India & Zimbabwe look to bounce back after difficult losses. We start the show with a quick summary of Jamie's thoughts about England becoming the first side to qualify for the semi-finals, before diving deep into a big win for the Black Caps - and the nervy moments along the way. After being sent in to bat, Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips were building a partnership, before a flurry of wickets from Chameera, Theekshana and Wellalage sent New Zealand spiralling from 75-2 to 84-6. Things were looking dicey for Black Caps fans, but after a slow start, Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie - into the side in place of Jimmy Neesham - roared to the finish, taking 70 off the final 4 overs of the innings. Then, with ball in hand, Matt Henry gave New Zealand the perfect start, ripping through Pathum Nissanka, and he was backed up by 17 overs of spin that put the squeeze on Sri Lanka - highlighted by Rachin Ravindra's four-wicket haul. To round out the show, the boys look ahead to what shapes as a huge day for all the sides in Group 1. Will Keshav Maharaj be able to tame the batting power of the West Indies? And which of India or Zimbabwe will keep their World Cup dreams alive heading into the final Super 8 fixtures? One of my college roommates is heading to Canton. That sentence still feels surreal. When I first met Larry Fitzgerald on his visit to the University of Pittsburgh, I had no idea I was meeting a future Hall of Famer. I just knew he had presence. Not hype. Not ego. Presence. When he arrived at training camp, the coaches quietly pulled me aside and asked me to help him learn the offense. What I didn't fully grasp at the time was what they already knew: he wasn't just there to compete. He was there to take over. And it took about two weeks. But here's what most people miss about Larry's story. Yes, he could high-point a football like nobody I've seen in 25 years around major college football. Yes, he tracked the deep ball with the instincts of a center fielder tracking a line drive into the gap. Yes, he could manipulate defensive backs, adjust stride length mid-route, and finish through contact with late, violent hands. But that's not what made him an All American at Pitt.It was how he saw the game — and his life — from the beginning. So in the latest Y-Option podcast, fueled by our founding partner 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat it's just me, celebrating him.My 1st lesson from him.During the first game of his freshman year he, like the rest of us at Pitt, wore a suit and tie to the game. That was the rule our head coach, Walt Harris, mandated. I think we all liked it as it felt like a business trip. But postgame everyone was changing into warm-ups to leave the stadium.I noticed that Larry started to put his suit back on.I quickly told him that he doesn't have to. He looked at me and said, at least this is how I remember it, “Yogi, they're going to know what I'm about from the jump.”That wasn't bravado. It was clarity. He came to college with a vision. Not just to be great at Pitt. Not just to make the league. But to be a pro — in habits, discipline, preparation, relationships. Small things, All things as the phrase goes.Larry grew up around it. His father, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., covered sports in Minnesota. As a kid, Larry was a ball boy around legends and he saw how pros moved, trained and most importantly how they treated everyone around them. By the time he arrived on campus, Larry Fitzgerald wasn't dreaming. He was executing.Talent Is Everywhere. Discipline Is Rare.I've been around Elite 11 quarterbacks for nearly two decades. I've been a broadcaster for 19 years and a coach for 4. Point being — I've seen first-round talent up close. Natural ability is not rare at that level. What's rare is clarity.Larry didn't drink. Didn't party. Had a tight circle. Was early to bed. Lived in the film room. Lived in the weight room. And that playlist was on repeat daily.I remember visiting him during the season when he was with the Arizona Cardinals. It was 8:00 PM and he said, “You can hang out, I'm going to bed.”Why?“I'm trying to be my best.”That's it. No drama. No speech. Just alignment between what he dreamt of and how he lived. When he decided to leave Pitt early for the NFL, I asked him if he'd considered coming back. He reframed it in a way that's stayed with me forever: if a surgeon is offered his dream job early, he goes. If a musician gets the gig of a lifetime, she goes. He was a wide receiver being offered his dream. He wasn't chasing status. He was honoring preparation.Playing Through LossDuring spring practice after his freshman season practice stopped and Larry left. News spread that his mom had passed away.I didn't know then what that kind of loss felt like. I do now. What I remember most wasn't just the grief — it was how he channeled it. He played for her. He carried her smile. He allowed the pain to sharpen his focus, not shrink his world. Or so it seemed. I know there was a lot of pain and I imagine that playing with his teammates allowed him to navigate through it. At least all of us hoped that we helped him out in the smallest of ways. After all, that's what teammates do. And our roster was extremely close.Looking back he taught me a powerful lesson that season: that there's a difference between playing for applause and playing with purpose. After he lost his Mom, it felt like Larry was playing for something deeper that just touchdowns and wins. And it showed. The Infinite GameRecently, I watched him receive his Hall of Fame invitation and greet Randy Moss — another all-time great. There was a knowing smile between them. A shared understanding of what it takes to get there. But when I think of Larry, I don't first think of Pro Bowl's or a Super Bowl run. I think of the freshman who chose the suit. The teammate who made everyone feel seen. The competitor who handed, or threw, the ball to officials after touchdowns like it was part of his joy.He played an infinite game. Not just to win on Saturdays. Not just to dominate on Sundays. But to become. He became one of the greatest wide receivers of all time.He became the greatest teammate I ever had.He became a father whose eldest son is now headed to University of Notre Dame to chase his own dream. And in a few months he officially becomes a Hall of Famer.I've never been to Canton before. This summer, I'll go.Not just to celebrate a gold jacket. But to honor the habits. The discipline. The clarity. The compassion.Larry Fitzgerald didn't just achieve greatness. He decided on it — early — and then lived accordingly. And if there's one lesson in his story for any young athlete, entrepreneur, artist, or dreamer reading this, it's simple:* Be clear about what you're about. * Be truly confident around what Matters Most* Then let your daily discipline make it undeniable.Much love and stay steady,YogiY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. We revisit the now-infamous saturation diver jellyfish story (yes, it's as bad as you remember), Pete's Ibiza jellyfish disaster, and the marriage debate that had everyone shouting “you're not present at all!”Plus, the Nickname Game Hall of Fame returns with some absolute crackers — including “Cordless”, “Pothole” and the one ( you know the one!) that nearly broke the internet. There's posture problems, packing arguments, erotic literature confusion, scuba diving fails and proof (apparently) that Abbey is a full-blown sex symbol. If you want to submit a story, Weekly Wine or a nickname for the Hall of Fame – hit the link below:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1rAKDST4HU_8al_aWpOlys3TRJrWvDV-84piVdlOOjU4/edit00:00 Introduction – Best Of Special03:45 WikiFeet & “Abbie's Trotters”08:20 Pete's 6AM Pod Workout13:10 Posture & Spine Scare17:40 “You're Not Present” Marriage Debate22:15 The Zurich Trip Chaos27:30 The Jellyfish Diver Horror Story33:40 Pete's Ibiza Jellyfish Nightmare36:50 Abbey's Lock Screen Moment40:10 Nickname Game Hall of Fame45:20 Erotic Literature & Mr Tickle49:00 Final LaughsTo contact us:Email: thetherapycrouch@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetherapycrouchpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thetherapycrouchWebsite: https://thetherapycrouch.com/For more from Peterhttps://twitter.com/petercrouchFor more from Abbeyhttps://www.instagram.com/abbeyclancyOur clips channelhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZntcv96YhN8IvMAKsz4Dbg Hosted on Acast. 0:00 ... Ross hello and welcome the crew ... episode #227 is dedicated to Jordan Walsh of the Celtics. 0:59 ... Bruce introduces his fellow "Brucie B" ... Bruce Bowen ... 1:49 ... Bruce tells the story of the "unretirement" of his #12 jersey that he wore with the Spurs. 3:17 ... How Bowen basically created the position we now know as the "Three and D" and what the role meant to him. 5:02 ... On his battles with Kobe Bryant and how he approached the matchup ... his description of how he used film to prepare is really interesting. And how Kobe was always in attack mode. 7:34 ... Bowen's legendary battle with LeBron James in the 2007 NBA Finals and how he forced LeBron into uncomfortable shots. But Bruce also appreciates LeBron's skills. 9:00 ... Ross asks Bruce about current stars and how he would guard some of them. Jaylen Brown is singled out by Bowen for his intelligence in many areas. 11:33 ... Phoenix Suns fan Ross still has nightmares from his Suns playing the Spurs back in the day. Bruce explains how hard it was to beat those guys in the postseason and how the Suns never played defense under Mike D'Antoni. 14:25 ... Bruce played for Pat Riley in Miami early in his career and he shares some amazing insight on how he and Riles interacted during their time together. He tells an incredible story about a tense contract discussion and how he said goodbye to Miami and bet on himself to succeed in San Antonio. 18:57 ... Bruce played for Miami in some intense playoff battles against the Knicks and Bruce explains the connection from two coaches named Van Gundy with Riles. Bruce has memories of Knicks fans coming to Florida to root for the Knicks. 21:27 ... World B asks Bruce about Tim Duncan and why he is not in the "GOAT" conversation. Bruce gives a great analysis of how Tim thinks and how he took the baton from David Robinson and won more championships. Bruce gives a great blueprint on Duncan's road to becoming a leader. Bruce shares a great story of how Gregg Popovich made it clear that if Tim felt he wanted to leave San Antonio, he should explore his options. And Tim never left. 25:18 ... Bruce takes a deep dive into his relationship with Gregg Popovich and how people misconstrued Pop's relationship with players. Pop always made it clear that his job was to coach guys and that the negative stuff always came from a good place. 29:18 ... As for the current Spurs team ... there's tremendous upside with Victor Wembanyama and young head coach Mitch Johnson. Victor brings guys together and all the current players respect each other. Bruce mentions Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper as young studs along with a mature group of veterans that have quickly developed great chemistry. 33:16 ... Wemby has a competitive edge that has surprised a lot of people because of the way he looks. The way he presented himself at All Star Weekend demonstrated leadership. 36:08 ... Bruce explains how Mitch Johnson has echoed some of Pop's philosophy but in a more contemporary style. Pop was so much of a legend that he seemed unapproachable to younger guys but Mitch is from their era and relates well. 39:09 ... Dylan Harper is a rookie who is learning quickly what it means to be a Spur. Having a system that emphasizes the team over personal agendas helps young players develop more quickly. Bruce feels the team success gives Harper a chance to make a bigger impact that hotter rookie names like Cooper Flagg and VJ Edgecombe. 42:07 ... Bruce from 48 Minutes predicted greatness for the Spurs long before they started playing like a championship contender. But they're so far ahead of schedule that they look like they could win it all this year. What could stop them? The "other" Bruce breaks it all down. 44:57 ... When discussing the officials and all the heat they're getting, Bruce feels like the the replays have hurt the relationship between players, coaches, and refs. Bruce has little patience for guys that can't put a bad call behind them and keep playing. As always, he has a great story about official Danny Crawford, who was inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame. 48:59 ... The 65 game minimum for postseason awards has cost some players awards that they might have won. Is 65 the right number of minimum games or should the number be lower ... maybe 62? Bruce feels the awards should take a back seat to what is best for the team. 52:13 ... Word Association ... David Robinson: Man of Faith 53:21 ... Draymond Green ... Fiery and Comfortable with Self 56:11 ... Luka Doncic ... Talented to a Fault 57:42 ...Tony Parker ... Wisdom at a Young Age 59:14 ... Shai Gilgeous Alexander ... Aggressive Competitor 1:00:17 ... Ross wraps it up ... thanks Bruce ... and says goodbye ... TRT 1:01:13 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. There is a Hall of Fame for just about everything in this country. But where is the Hall of Fame celebrating the inventors, the creators, the entrepreneurs that have made America so great? Well, there isn't one yet. However, the great social entrepreneur John Tillman is working on a $350 million project aimed at building a hall of fame for entrepreneurship and American innovation, which he is calling the Hall of Giants. John joins Giving Ventures to share his vision and provide a peek at the special soft launch it has coming up on the mall later this summer. John is the chairman and former CEO of the Illinois Policy Institute. He's also been founding or reviving other organizations from Center Square, Bearing Tree, Iron Light. And before all that, he was a business entrepreneur himself.
Yesterday's Sports is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS HOME PAGEEPISODE SUMMARYThe final episode of the Hall of Fame series is recorded during Super Bowl week and opens with Dave describing his Super Bowl jackets, patches, and pins, including favorites from Super Bowls VI, X, XIII, and a rare press pin from Super Bowl XXX. The conversation reflects on collecting, nostalgia, and how memorabilia represents personal memories more than monetary value, while also reinforcing that Hall of Fame induction is limited and that not getting in doesn't erase a player's greatness. The discussion then shifts to football nostalgia and how the game has changed, touching on extreme cold-weather games like the Bengals–Chargers “freezer” game, Kenny Anderson's performance, and concerns about moving future playoff games indoors. They contrast today's Super Bowl—dominated by commercials, halftime shows, and nonstop media—with earlier eras when the focus was strictly on the game, before closing with lighthearted talk about old episodes, short-form clips, and plans for future shows.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. He relives great moments from this time and beyond, focusing on football, baseball, basketball, and boxing. Someone is listening to the Top Order Podcast. Binksy has been calling for more opportunity for Harry Brook - he was elevated to number three in this Super 8 clash against Pakistan and delivered a fine century as England chased down 164. It wasn't without a few nervous moments as late wickets triggered a little bit of a wobble. There are a few nitpicks and work-ons for England going forward, but Baldy and Binksy were impressed with the tactical changes and adjustments that England are making on the fly with their bowling in this tournament. If their batters can do the same the sky is the limit for England. For Pakistan they have it all to do - their encounter with Sri Lanka is a must win and they rely on New Zealand losing tonight against Sri Lanka and/or against England to end Super 8 play to have a chance of progressing. What will they need to change? Again it's the strike rate conversation with Babar Azam coming under the microscope as he walks the fine line between holding the innings together and pushing the strike rate forward. Tonight's clash between New Zealand and Sri Lanka will be a battle of two different batting groups. NZ's batters were great in the group stage while the SL batters are now under pressure. Can SL bounce back against a New Zealand attack that could be back at full strength? Will we see Ish Sodhi feature? NZ have plenty of spin options at the disposal. For SL - they need a rollicking good start against the likes of Henry and Ferguson to get them on the front foot in the power play. Dr. Beckett tributes two recently deceased Pittsburgh Pirates favorites from his personal botyhood fandom: relief ace Roy (ElRoy) Face and Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski. He reflects on the 1960 Pirates as his favorite team and explains why both players deserve more hobby respect. For Face, he highlights his signature forkball, how relievers of that era entered tie games and jams, his remarkable 1959 run (including winning 18 of 19), his military service, and his role in the 1960 World Series with three saves. Beckett also discusses Face's key and scarce cards, including his 1953 Topps high-number rookie, the rarely seen 1952 Fort Worth Cats card, and the very tough 1960 ElRoy Face Motel card, and comments on Face's late induction into the Pirates Hall of Fame in 2023 and his unlikely Hall of Fame chances. For Mazeroski, he recounts where he was when he heard Mazeroski's Game 7 walk-off home run on the radio, emphasizes Mazeroski's elite defense and double-play prowess, cites Bill James's praise of his defensive impact, and notes his career home run total and playing context at Forbes Field. He closes with additional audio from Hobby Hotline discussing Mazeroski's passing, his reputation with fans and signings, comparisons within the 1960 World Series, and the argument for valuing defense and signature career moments. 00:23 Tributes: 1960 Pirates & Two Legends 03:32 Roy Face Cards (RC, Minor League, Motel Card) 04:41 Roy Face Legacy: Hall of Fame Case 05:32 My Maz Memory: Hearing the Walk-Off on the Radio 08:30 Mazeroski Key Cards + Closing Thoughts 12:46 Hall of Fame Debate: Moment vs Career

What if the most dangerous thing in your life isn't failure… but the fact that you're not the one driving? In this mashup episode, I'm bringing together two men who know what it feels like to lose control of their lives and then fight their way back into the driver's seat. Darren Waller and Rod Carew open up about addiction, pressure, identity, faith, and the discipline it takes to reclaim your life when it starts spiraling. I share a story in this episode about a terrifying cab ride I took with my daughter. For 25 minutes, we were completely out of control. Someone else was driving recklessly, and we were just passengers in the back seat. That experience became a metaphor for something I see all the time. So many people are not actually driving their own lives. Their fears are driving. Their past is driving. Their addiction to approval is driving. Their anger, insecurity, comparison, or trauma is driving. And they are just along for the ride, hoping it does not end in a crash. Darren Waller talks about what it was like when addiction was behind the wheel of his life. From the outside, he was living the dream. Inside, he was losing control. He shares how recovery forced him to confront what was really driving him and how taking radical ownership changed everything. Rod Carew shares his journey from humble beginnings to Hall of Fame greatness, and how discipline, faith, and personal responsibility kept him focused when the spotlight and expectations could have easily taken over. This episode is about awareness. You cannot fix what you are unwilling to face. If you are reacting instead of choosing, if your emotions are dictating your behavior, if you keep repeating the same patterns and calling it bad luck, there is a good chance you are not in control. And the truth is, until you decide to take the wheel back, your life will keep zigging and zagging in ways you do not want.
