THE JEREMIAH SHOW - Featuring Jake Shimabukuro! Music is a gift, and the ability to play it is a blessing. Be grateful for both. – Anonymous Acclaimed Hawai'i-born ‘ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro released Grateful, his most personal project to date, featuring twenty-two collaborations with a who's who of Hawaiian music royalty, from Henry Kapono to Kawika Kahiapo, Brother Noland to Raiatea Helm, John Feary to Bryan Tolentino and John Cruz to Kimié Miner. Recorded over three-and-a-half years, Grateful is a coming home for Shimabukuro, and his first time recording an album with all Hawaii-based artists. With a literal who's who of Hawai'i-based musicians, this collection of songs is performed live, in the studio with Shimabukuro's friends, contemporaries, mentors, and heroes - all kanikapila style in a return to his roots. Grateful is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed duets album with artists from Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, and Bette Midler to Jimmy Buffett, Jack Johnson, and Kenny Loggins. It was these collaborations that inspired him to go back to the beginning and play with the musicians who first inspired him as he was growing up in Hawai`i. Shimabukuro shares a connection with every artist on this album. Produced by Michael Grande and Van Fletcher, Grateful has been a labor of love and the most intimate look into Shimabukuro's foundation as a player. Henry is pure Hawaiian. “Kapono” is the Hawaiian word for righteous. As you're about to see, he's a most righteous guy. Born and raised in Kapahulu, (that's a town just outside of Waikiki) Henry Kapono and his tunes are full of positive energy and the aloha spirit.  You may know Henry Kapono's song “Duke's on Sunday,” inspired by Duke's: the beachfront destination and restaurant in Waikiki.  Ya know, Jimmy Buffett liked that song so much, he recorded his own version. Yeahhh… Since you're such a cool bunch, we'd love for you to subscribe to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel. It's free, plus that way you won't miss a thing. Henry Kapono Kaʻaihue is a giant in Hawaiʻi, his music was on the leading edge of the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970ʻs. He opened the door for contemporary local music in the 1970's. With partner, Cecilio Rodrigues, C&K provided the soundtrack for an era. The music still conjures good times in Hawaiʻi for generations of people. I am not licensed to play the music on this podcast, but here's a link to a broadcast of this interview on Hawai'i Public Radio. I was able to incorporate some music in that version so it's fun! Not full songs though, due to time constraints. Mahalo, HPR! It was easy connecting through his wife and partner, Lezlee. Theyʻve got twins, teenagers now at Punahou. Such a pleasure to look at the work. In the C&K discography, Henry's songs were Friends, Song for Someone, Sunflower, oh heavens, they just let it be beautiful. Highway in the Sun, so many. Henry's all about forward momentum. His website, Henry's House is a fountain of positivity. He has an artist-to-artist program starting this fall. In this interview, Henry recalls how the Hawaiʻi diaspora saved a gig in Palo Alto, and how that led to their Columbia contract. Frank Zappa figures in a great story about how C&K first broke in Honolulu. Over the pandemic, Henry released an acoustic version of his Dylanesque rocker, One Man. One Man 2020 shows that all Henry's positivity is a choice. Because in 2022, our eyes are open, we see cruelty, we see suffering, and we see the grind that makes us so unhappy with ourselves and each other. I worry about the pressure on people who choose to live in Hawaiʻi. We have a lot in common, just committing to live here. Henry's music is a heartful connector. Dive into the C&K discography for a fun Aloha Friday happy hour, my friends, or dust off that black vinyl. These really are the good times together. In this episode of Nobody Knows Your Story, I visit with Hawaiian music legend, Henry Kapono. We talk about his early years growing up in the shadows of Honolulu, developing a love of music from a church choir and playing lots of sports. But Henry really grew up during a two-year stint in Southeast Asia entertaining the troops playing in a rock band. There's nothing quite like playing on a base in Vietnam with rockets going off, that won't change the way you view life. I'm excited to introduce my listeners to Henry's music, and I've included several of his songs in this episode. If you've spent time in Hawaii, it would be hard to not have heard Henry's music as his career has spanned close to fifty years. Henry first found success as a part of the popular duo Cecilio & Kapono, and later with a successful solo career that has produced 21 albums. Actually, make that 22 as a new compilation CD, “HENRY'S POSITIVE WORLD” comes out today, November 24, 2021. You can check it out, and all of Henry's music at Henrykapono.com.(I snuck in a favorite of mine Na Makua from Henry's album the Wild Hawaiian at the end of the podcast.)

Instead of following trends or struggling to fit in—by either over-extending in an effort to stay cool to the younger generation or succumbing to pressure to maintain the same sound from album to album—Atmosphere’s discography has evolves naturally, in their own way. Cosmopolitanism—the idea that local polities share systemic parallels internationally as part of a world citizenry—was a thriving philosophy in the Hawaiian Kingdom, and it was expressed through art. People in Hawai‘i developed a visual language that merged art and politics, and that presented local iterations of global art styles. They expanded an existing visual culture using a combination of indigenous and introduced materials, concepts, and techniques. The show features experimental art works alongside academic art works to explore how both the avant-garde and the academic were deployed in the shaping of a national identity. The exhibition prompts conversations about issues of adaptability, economy, ceremony, and, more important, gets at underlying perceptions about the Hawaiian place in the world at turn of the century. It also challenges ideas about tradition, modernity, and culture in Hawai‘i through the collection and loaned works. The honolulu museum of art   Kauai   Grove Farm museum's Sugar Plantation BASH! Celebrating 45 years, ‘Reggae Ambassadors’, THIRD WORLD is one of the longest-lived Reggae bands of all time, and one of Jamaica's most consistently popular crossover acts among international audiences.  Mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, and rock and, later on, dancehall and rap, Third World’s style has been described as "reggae-fusion". With 10 Grammy nominations and catalogue of charted smash hits (including “Now That We Found Love”, ”96 Degrees in the Shade” and “Try Jah Love” )  spanning over four decades, sold-out tours, a vibrant and loyal fan base and inspirational messages, one may wonder, "Where did it all begin? What gives Third World the staying power so rare in the music industry?" Third World is more than just one of the top Reggae bands of all time, it is an institution that stands for producing and performing music that, while holding firm to the cultural and ancestral roots of its members, still pushes forward the cutting edge of music worldwide. Raised in the beautiful island state of Hawaii, John Valentine has spent most of his life entertaining in the heart of Waikiki, eventually becoming one of the most sought after live musicians in the islands.John began his music career sharing the spotlight with high school friend Pat Miguel. The duo, known as Night Splendor, immediately found itself with a large and faithful following in the Waikiki circuit. They eventually joined the Dick Jensen Show performing their favorite impersonations.John and Pat went on to perform with the Love Notes, an oldies review that was a huge favorite among the locals and tourists alike. With John’s vocal talent and musical direction, the Lovenotes became one of the island’s greatest sensations, taking time away from home to tour the Midwest and Tokyo Japan. While in Japan, John began to train and mentor his sister’s son Peter (Bruno) to dance and sing like Elvis. The next step in John’s career took him to the 30th floor of the Sheraton Waikiki and the spectacular Hanohano Room. There he performed with the classic trio, Stardust led by Brian Robertshaw. During this time, he moonlighted as an Elvis impersonator in Aloha Las Vegas at the Beachcomber, along with his sister Bernie who paid tribute to Tina Turner and his nephew Bruno Mars who was the show’s Michael Jackson impersonator.John along with Zanuck Lindsey formed Rock Hard Hawaii – an exciting band that gives a high-energy boost to conventions and other special events. The band features classic rock across the decades including a selection of contemporary music.Today John is sharing his talent island-wide at a variety of venues including Moana Surfrider’s Beach Bar, Hard Rock Cafe and more. See the calendar for a current schedule.John is honored and excited to share the stage with both Kalapana and the legendary Henry Kapono, both for shows here in Hawaii and on the road. Teaming up with these great musicians is an incredible opportunity to share the classic music of Hawaii across the globe. New performances are being released regularly. Keep an eye on the calendar and tour schedule for updates. While entertaining has been his primary bread and butter, John’s true love is working in the recording studio as a producer. The Hawaii Music Award winning Guitars of Hawaii showcases Hawaii’s finest guitar players including the late great Mackie Feary & Danny Otholt.Power of Two Johnny & Yvette Nii released a CD in 2006 that was honored a Hawaii Music Award nominee.
