Frank Murphy's friend Jeff Detrow is today's co-host. Jeff had a long and successful radio career in San Diego on KFMB, KKLQ, and KYXY. The Jeff & Jer Showgram was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2016. https://www.radiohalloffame.com/the-jeff-jer-showgram Jeff points out that Frank's red gingham shirt is another one purchased at an estate sale. It's one of ten shirts that belonged to the father of Eddie Mannis. Jeff pretends to use a Frank & Friends Show beach towel as a shirt, prompting Frank to make sure there is a wraparound logo shirt available in the online merch store. Frank has several boxes of his dad's Kodak slides. He promised his sisters he would digitize the images. Frank finally bought a mid-range slide scanner after a period of indecisiveness known as “paralysis by analysis.” Frank signed up for another Google account in order to store the photos online and use their automatic photo retouching. Frank watched YouTube reviews to help him decide which scanner to buy. Jeff is amazed by the high number of product reviews on Amazon. Frank says the gold standard of Amazon product reviews used to be those written about the Hutzler Banana Slicer. https://www.amazon.com/Hutzler-571-Banana-Slicer/product-reviews/B0047E0EII Frank and his wife Jere drove Artie Rocket home to Northern Virginia and then stayed for three nights at a cheap motel nearby. The lobby was closed, causing Frank and Jere to go to the motel next door to check in and get their key. The motel's promotional photos differed from reality. The pool was closed. The free breakfast had been discontinued. There were cigarette burns on the bathroom sink. Frank removed some hair from the shower drain before realizing it wasn't his or Jere's hair. Jeff thinks the shower drain story was gross. Frank follows up with the story of how “Jere the Brave” got her nickname. Frank and Jere were staying at a different cheap motel directly across the street from their most recent visit. Jere solved a toilet problem by using the straw from a Super Big Gulp. Jeff reads some reviews of bad hotels on Yelp. One room had no cold water and a clogged sink. The floor was littered with floss picks. The jacuzzi was the color of chicken soup. Jeff reads a one-star review of a hotel room in Paris over a cheery music bed called “Gaiety in the Golden Age” by Aaron Kenny. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). On this month's Hiberno Goethe, Ciarán talks to physicist Stefan Hutzler. Stefan dressed up in traditional Bavarian costume at the 2015 Ireland Germany game with his sons, and didn't cheer when Ireland scored. Look out for the boys in red and white SSV Jahn Regensburg jerseys playing football in Dublin parks. Stefan talks about Kepler and Oppenheimer, and the physics behind the Beijing Olympic Swimming Pool based on the ‘Weir Phelan structure' made from TCD designed bubbles. We also learn how the Guinness head lasts longer than the Weissbier head because of the stability of the bubbles. Stefan is a keen musician and has played in the Baggot Inn, he recites a couple of his songs for us, including one in 3 different languages. Stefan talks about the Beatles singing in German, and Kraftwerk singing in German and English. We hear how physics is connected to music and about how Einstein played the violin.

On January 6, 2012, law enforcement and firefighters responded to a house fire west of Glengary, West Virginia. Inside the home were the remains of 56 year old David Hutzler and his nine year old son James "Macky" Hutzler. Initially, police classified the case as a murder-suicide. David Hutzler was believed to have shot his son, set their home on fire, and then killed himself. Police reported that the father and son both died from gunshot wounds to their heads, and the boy suffered a second "glancing" gunshot wound on his chin.Kelli Hutzler, David Hutzler's daughter, refused to believe this. She insisted that her dad could not have committed such a heinous act. I asked Kelli why law enforcement ruled the case a murder suicide. She told me that her dad had no reason to kill himself and her brother. She also revealed that there was no murder weapon at the scene. According to her, the law enforcement theory that it was a murder suicide is incorrect because there was no weapon present. Kelli has taken issue with the West Va. State police for their initial ruling. For over a year, locals and the public believed David had murdered his son before killing himself. Eventually, law enforcement realized their mistake. The case was then ruled a double homicide. Kelli told me she finds it disturbing that some people still believe the case was murder suicide, even a year after the case was reclassified as a double homicide. Currently, there is an individual who is walking around unpunished after shooting a 9-year-old cub scout to death. Now on with the story of James and David Hutzler as told by David's daughter Kelli Hutzler. Do you know who killed this father and son? Do you have any information about their killer? It is Kelli's mission to find out who killed her dad and brother. Those with information about the Hutzler double homicide are asked to contact the West Virginia State Police at 304-267-0002 or 304-267-0000. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 304-267-4999. 2022 is a strange year...already. No better soundtrack to strange transformational times than the interdimensional Lungfish. On this episode, we speak with beekeeper/tattoo artist/musician and all around deep thinker, Yah Soon, about the track Invert The State. We also begin to get into Way Out, but will continue that conversation next episode. We also resume our conversation with Lungfish tour manager, Paul Hutzler. Come on in, the water's fine. It's always midstream, no matter where you enter.
A new year brings many things. This year will hopefully bring more episodes and less dis-ease. The opening one for the year is strong medicine. My guest, Paul Hutzler, spent a lot of time on the road with Lungfish and is one of the inner circle of the band. His spirit is large and his heart open, his stories riveting and his insight rare. Also on the show, for the second consecutive exegesis of You Are The War, is Brian Benke. He brings a mystical Christian perspective to the track at hand and adds much to the mystery. Lloyd Paul Stryker, Hiss's Defense Atty (Digital Commons) Whittaker Chambers, and then his wife Esther, testify in court. Both their direct testimonies were rocky due to Stryker's objections and Judge Kaufman's rulings. Their cross-examinations by Stryker were brutal. Chambers sat there and passively took blow after blow, but Mrs. Chambers shouted back at Stryker as forcefully as he had shouted at her. But each got to say what needed to be said — that Hiss passed Chambers State Department documents in 1937 and 1938 and that the two families were friends. At the second trial, both Chamberses were more relaxed and forthcoming because they had been through it all before (isn't everything easier the second time?) and because the judge at the second trial gave all the witnesses more leeway. Everyone agreed their testimonies at the second trial were more effective. FURTHER RESEARCH: Episode 20: Lengthy accounts of the Chamberses' direct and cross examinations are in Weinstein at 440-56 (first trial) and 499-501 (second) and Cooke at 121-48 (Mr. C, first trial), 151-61 (Mrs. C, first trial), 287-91 (Mr. C, second trial) and 295-96 (Mrs. C, second trial). Mrs. Chambers, who has not appeared much in these Podcasts until now, is described by Weinstein (at 451) as “small, slim-boned, plain faced” and by Cooke (at 151) as “a small severe figure . . . , a very dark, thin-lipped woman in spectacles who sat nervously back in the witness chair.” Chambers, in his memoir "Witness," describes (at 232) Stryker's cross-examination of her as “brutal bullying.” Chambers also describes meeting his future wife at a textile workers' strike at Passaic, New Jersey, in 1930. He describes her as brave, forthright and militant, with “dark brown eyes . . . of a candor and purity such as I had never seen in any other woman in the Communist movement.” He was surprised to learn that she was a pacifist. (Witness at 231-32. See also Weinstein at 118-19.) Questions: Do you think that Stryker went too far with his brutal cross-examination of Mrs. Chambers? In 1948, women were “The Fair Sex” and men were supposed to be gentlemen. But what choice did he have after she had corroborated most of her husband's testimony? The trials were the first time that anyone heard Mrs. Chambers tell her story. She professed ignorance of her husband's spying. But most significantly, she described an extensive social relationship with Mrs. Hiss — lots of get-togethers typical for young married wives and mothers in the mid-1930s, at specific locations in Washington (Mount Vernon, Haynes Point, and Georgetown) and Baltimore (various squares and parks and Hutzler's Department Store). Any pro-Hiss juror must have wondered — was Mrs. Chambers just as insane as her husband, or was she lying in perfect harmony with her husband's lunacy? Did not her details lend credibility to her story, and by inference to her husband's?

ADME testing (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion) is an essential part of early stage drug development. In this episode, Dr. Matt Hutzler, Director of ADME Services at Q2 Solutions, describes the common paradigm of ADME testing and why short turnaround times are important. Because speed is so important, outsourcing testing overseas may not make as much economic sense as it might have in the past, given shipping costs and the possibilities for delays (at customs for example.) Dr. Hutzler explains the factors that contribute to the success of high-throughput ADME testing and what advances and innovations we might expect in the future.

David welcomes Colin Hutzler, one of the contestants of Bravo's Spy Games, a reality show competition where ten individuals compete to become the "ultimate spy" while living together in a house. Think The Mole meets Survivor meets Big Brother. #heaven. It's a good show, a really really good show complete with real life CIA, FBI and Secret Service packaged in a Bravo setting. David fan girls over the show as he and Colin discuss all things Colin, Spy Games, Bravo and Reality TV. Did we mention Colin has ties to the one and only Scheana Shay?? Of course, all roads lead back to Vanderpump Rules. An episode not to be missed.https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For over one hundred years, Pomeroy’s was a beloved household name for the shoppers of central and eastern Pennsylvania. Founded in 1876, the store began under another name in Reading and soon expanded to Harrisburg, Pottsville and Wilkes-Barre. George Pomeroy bought out his partners in 1923, and Pomeroy’s became known for its exemplary service and a devoted sales force. From the extraordinary window displays and the annual Christmas parade to a bite at the Tea Room, the stores were a social hub where sweethearts first met and families did their Saturday shopping. Though the final stores closed in 1990, the memories live on. Department store historian Michael Lisicky chronicles the history of Pomeroy’s and takes readers back in time with reminiscences of former employees, interviews with store insiders and a selection of classic recipes. Michael Lisicky has been credited as a nationally recognized department store “historian,” “lecturer,” “expert,” “guru,” “aficionado,” “junkie” and “maven” by several major newspapers. He is the author of several best-selling books, including Wanamaker’s: Meet Me at the Eagle, Hutzler’s: Where Baltimore Shops, and Woodward and Lothrop: A Store Worthy of the Nation’s Capital. Mr. Lisicky resides in Baltimore, where he is an oboist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and a master’s degree candidate in museum studies at Johns Hopkins University.
