It was a true joy and a great privilege to have former Division I NCAA basketball coach, current leadership coach and Gonzaga doctoral student, Adam Gierlach on this episode of the podcast. Adam and I share a passion for servant leadership which connected us together. Adam highlighted the importance of nurturing the attributes of care and curiosity to foster connections and relationships as servant leaders and shared a portion of his story of how he transitioned from basketball coach to leadership coach.  He reminds us that leadership doesn't need to have anything to do with one's status in a hierarchy, and that as a servant leader it should be more about one's focus on commitment to the growth of others. Adam illustrates the importance of decoupling career growth programs from leadership development and creating a dedicated path to focus on servant first instead of leader first mentalities. This means we are coaching those around us and helping them achieve their ideal self. Adam educates us on the powerful concepts of emotional contagions in organizations and highlights profound research that emphasize the importance of being in tune with the emotions in our teams. The research shows that the lowest performing teams are often characterized as focus on self and as having the lowest emotional range, whereas the highest performing teams have the highest emotional range. This highlights that the case could be made for emotions as one of the most important thing to study in organizations. Adam also teaches the profound implications of negative emotions and even worse the numbing reaction of indifference. Leaders who listen to this material will be better prepared to build a positive community with the real individuals on their teams.   Adam operates his own leadership coaching practice, Adam Gierlach Coaching, where he primarily works with athletic coaches and student-athletes, while also serving as a leadership coach for the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University, and the coaching company Ama La Vida, where he serves executives and leaders across a variety of organizations. He holds a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and is a certified leadership coach through Rice University's Doerr Institute for New Leaders. As a leadership coach, Adam helps leaders to become servant-leaders, and increase the capacity of individuals to lead. His work with others is a co-creative partnership that provides the time, space, and opportunity for you to learn about yourself, so you can serve others in more life-giving ways and act with greater impact. He transitioned into leadership coaching after nearly a decade in men's college basketball, serving as an Assistant Coach at Rice University and Cornell University. Dr. Tom Kolditz is the founding Director of the Ann and John Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University–the most comprehensive, evidence-based, university-wide leader development program globally. Before Rice, he taught as a Professor in the Practice of Leadership and Management and Director of the Leadership Development Program at the Yale School of Management.A retired Brigadier General, Tom led the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at West Point for 12 years. Our guest is Tom Kolditz, the author of Leadership Reckoning and Director of The Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University.  The Institute's two-fold mission is to create a powerful and widely available leader development experience and improve the quality of leader development in higher education everywhere. Tom shares how many universities include the development of leaders in their mission statement.  However, he explains that few have any focused programs to bring about that mission.  Many focus on what Tom calls “leadertainment” which has no lasting benefit. We discuss Tom's book Leadership Reckoning, which outlines the failure of higher education.  In addition Tom defines leadertainment and reveals how to measure outcomes and design programs to improve leadership development. Tom informs us about the upcoming classification system from Carnegie Mellon that is compelling Universities to listen to the problems being presented.  Afterwards, he gives insight into how it will aid them in moving towards better programs for leadership development. One of the phrases that struck me when I was interviewing Tom Kolditz was when he said that “the US military is very egalitarian, very much in a meritocracy. People are expected to never lean on their rank. The rank gives them a certain set of responsibilities. But it doesn't give them any advantage in the framework that we operate in our military.” Tom rose to the rank of Brigadier General, which should give you some sense of his calibre as a leader. I ask people their reasons for polluting activities like flying, take-out, taking taxis or ride shares where public transit serves. They consistently tell me that they love these things. They love visiting family, seeing remote places, etc.If you feel similarly, you're about to face some tough love. Tom Kolditz is the founding Director of the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University. He was a senior instructor on the West Point parachute team for 12 years and had 647 helicopter jumps. [3:45] Five questions to measure a leader’s effectiveness:  What are this leader’s strengths? What are this leader’s challenges? When is this leader at their best? When is this leader at their worst? How can this leader improve? [7:40] You don’t need to make this process complicated. You can focus on theory all day long, but the real results come from the outcome. [10:15] Leaning too heavily on ‘the rules’ limits the leader of their responsibility. They can just blame the rule instead of being flexible and adapting to the specific instance. [10:50] When you take responsibility for what you say or what you do, it can be painful, but it goes away. [13:10] In our culture, we openly talk about our mistakes, so you’d think people would be open to making mistakes. However, it seems it’s having an opposite effect, where more and more people are taking a more conservative and fearful approach. [16:10] If someone makes a mistake, social media has the ability to make it go viral and ruin careers. [18:40] Most ethical transgressions have, at their root, an excessive self-interest. People do not get called out enough for being selfish. [26:45] When you or a company’s self-interest starts to take away from people in unfair ways, that should not be an acceptable business practice. It is a flashing red light for an ethics violation. [35:30] One of the best things the military helps us with is that the entire culture is focused on leadership, rewards leadership, and respects leadership. It is a cultural immersion. Soldiers can smell a fake person a mile away. [37:45] Remember, if there is a problem in the organization, it’s your job to fix it. It’s not your job to lead an organization where there are no problems. [39:45] Senior leaders have to get comfortable with a lot more ambiguity. They have to think about their guidance in broader, intense, statements. Define what your team’s right and left limits are and let them soar. [41:30] Leaders can think a lot faster than their larger staff can execute. It can be pretty easy to get sucked into being a micromanager when things aren’t progressing enough. [45:00] You have poorly developed leaders (their leadership abilities are at the high-school level, even with a 4-year university degree) that have adopted bad leadership habits for the last 15 years in their career, and now they’re working in leadership positions. Industries are just riddled with bad leaders because no one has helped them develop this skill throughout their careers. As Houston's greenest mayor, we reflect on the major environmental accomplishments of her administration including making Houston—let's face it, a city not often associated in the public imagination with sustainability—the largest municipal purchaser of renewable electricity in the country with much improved mass transit and a greatly expanded network of hike and bike trails along the city's bayou system. Annise talks to us about the important role cities are playing in the fight against climate change, including making markets for renewable energy and pursuing their own “para-diplomacy” with other cities to advance initiatives stalled at other levels of government. She explains why making the economic argument for renewables has been so important in Houston and why she doesn't view Houston's oil and gas industry as an impediment to forward progress. She also shares her thoughts on bike programs, automated vehicles, public transportation, migration, and hurricanes. Finally (1:09:46) Annise shares her frank reactions to the election, predicts many broken promises to come, and expresses her faith in the republic.
