This episode was originally released on August 16, 2022In order to seek genomic justice, you have to get out of the lab and into the field.Dr. Kaylee Byers grabs a magnifying glass and a deerstalker cap as she goes to the scene of one of North America's oldest cold case murder mysteries, the “Babes in the Woods.” This over 70-year-old unsolved case has finally had some closure due to emerging forensic genomic science. But while looking for leads, Dr. Byers spots a bright red thread pointing her to questions about how our genomics are being accessed by law enforcement. How can genomics bring justice to unsolved mysteries? And at what cost are we willing to pay to find answers?Genetic Genealogist, Cece Moore, from ABC's Prime time series The Genetic Detective helps connect the dots. In the latter half of 1985, a series of brutal killings rocked the quiet woods of Mineral, Washington. On August 10, 1985, 27-year-old Steven Harkins and his 42-year-old girlfriend, Ruth Cooper, departed from their home in Tacoma, Washington, for a weekend camping trip at Tule Lake in Pierce County. Four days later, on August 14, hikers in Pierce County found Harkins shot dead in his sleeping bag at a remote campsite, with the couple's dog also killed nearby. On October 26, Cooper's skull was found near Harts Lake, 1.5 miles from Harkins' body. Two days later, her body and purse were discovered 50 feet away. A tube sock was tied around her neck, and she had died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. In December 1985, Mike Riemer, 36, his girlfriend Diana Robertson, 21, and their 2-year-old daughter Crystal traveled from Tacoma to Pierce County to find a Christmas tree. Later that evening, Crystal was found alone outside a Kmart in Spanaway, saying her "Mommy was in the trees." Two months later, Diana's body was discovered near Riemer's truck, with a tube sock around her neck and 17 stab wounds. Investigators suspected Riemer, who had disappeared, might be responsible, though some believed he was also a victim. He had previously been charged with domestic assault against Diana.Ossuary 6 - Air Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries
Send Kris and Rob a Text Message. On November 19, 1987, a young Canadian couple, Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg, embarked on what should have been a straightforward business trip to Seattle, Washington. Tasked with picking up furnace parts for Jay's father, they decided to make a fun outing of the errand, crossing the border from their home in British Columbia into the United States. Tragically, this trip would mark the beginning of a harrowing mystery that spanned over three decades. The couple's plans took a grim turn when they failed to return home on time. Concern quickly grew among their families, leading to frantic searches and anguished appeals for their safe return. Days later, their worst fears were realized. Tanya's lifeless body was discovered in a ditch near Alger, Washington, 20 miles south of Bellingham. She had been sexually assaulted and shot in the head. Jay's body was found two days later, 60 miles away under a bridge in Snoqualmie, strangled with a pack of cigarettes shoved down his throat. The investigation faced numerous challenges, leaving detectives with few leads and no clear suspects. The case went cold, despite persistent efforts and the enduring hope of Jay and Tanya's families for justice. As years turned into decades, the murders remained a haunting, unsolved mystery. It wasn't until 31 years later that a breakthrough came, thanks to advancements in DNA technology and the perseverance of those still seeking answers. In 2018, investigators utilized genetic genealogy to trace DNA evidence left at the crime scenes to a distant relative of the suspect. This led them to William Earl Talbott II, a truck driver from Washington whose second cousin had unknowingly provided the crucial link.Talbott was arrested and charged with the murders of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg. During the trial, prosecutors presented compelling evidence connecting Talbott to the crime scenes, including the DNA match and testimony regarding his movements around the time of the murders. In June 2019, a jury found Talbott guilty, providing a long-awaited sense of justice and closure for the victims' families. The story of Jay and Tanya serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of violent crime and the enduring quest for justice. Their families' perseverance, coupled with modern forensic science, ultimately brought a resolution to a case that had haunted the Pacific Northwest for over three decades.Join us on the latest episode of Hitched 2 Homicide as we delve deeper into the chilling details of this case, exploring the lives cut tragically short and the relentless pursuit of justice that finally prevailed.Support the Show.JOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA

Young couple Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg had only been dating for 6 months when they set off on a short road trip from British Columbia to Seattle to pick up something for Jay's father's business. When they did not return when expected, their families reported them missing, and tragically their bodies were found in two separate locations within the next six days. This is the story of the murders of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg, and the years their families had to wait for justice. The David Alliance TDAgiantslayer@Gmail.com Michigan wins the title… smoked Washington… I loved hearing Jim Harbaugh give God credit, talk about listening to the leading of the Holy Spirit… You might doubt his integrity… but as Jesus said If they are for me… they are for me! How to make 2024 a better launch… a better life. Honesty Delete Systems Risk Keep Jesus #1 In 2012 Dollar shave club risked it… started by Michael Dubin… he bought a huge inventory of razors… and wanted to sell them on line… as a subscription… stupid, risky and now a company that sold for 1Billion… Risk… are you up for it! The greatest pastors, evangelists, soul winners.. you name it. They all practiced risk. They all took chances on trusting the word of God- and when things did not turn the way they had hoped… they kept trusting and risking. We call it faith… true, but we still need to take that step of faith which is where the risk comes in. Why Risk? One of the best reasons is you find your tribe. You quickly find out who you are connected to in your walk and in your calling. Have you ever been around someone and just been bored by them? They seem like they want to live a safe, stale life… and you just don't want to … When someone takes risks and I hear about it, I know that is a person I want to do life with. They prayed for someone to be healed out in public. They shared the gospel, they sacrificed money or time or both. They risked starting a ministry or business… Now I want to do life with that person. They understand what makes for a beautiful life. Secondly Risk is the greatest and fastest door to growth in any area, but especially in your spiritual walk. When Christ says take up your cross daily, its not just seen as a sacrifice, but also a call to risk. To be like Christ, to take up your cross is to live a life of risk. We learn from mistakes… mistakes come from risk. When we choose his will over ours we must take risks. Our will- likes comfort, ease, and the dependable. For far too long too many Christians following that example have produced weak imatiated followers of Christ. Risk is living on the edge… I like what Kurt Vonnegut Jr. said. RISK i WANT TO STAY AS CLOSE TO THE EDGE AS I CAN WITHOUT GOING OVER OUT ON THE EDGE YOU SEE ALL KINDS OF THINGS YOU CANT SEE FROM THE CENTER. kURT VONNEGUT JR. Life is about experiences, memories and stories. Risk gives you a mountain of great experiences, memories and stories. I can't tell you how many times I was faced with risk…and I would tell myself “either way, its going to be a great story”. I was with our youth group years ago up in Minnesota by Jay Cook state park. There was a bridge there about 90 feet off the water… rapids actually. And some young guys where jumping and some were just watching. I had to do it… When I climbed up over the ledge to jump a young kid about 20 said “you are not hesitating for a second”. I replied no, the sooner I jump the sooner I can tell the story! Finally… Remember Jesus rewarded the risk takers not the rule keepers. Rule keepers don't learn much of anything new, they don't have stories to tell and they will never grow abundantly in their walk of faith. A calm sea does not produce a skilled sailor. Here is the best advice I can give you. Risk, faith, guts… whatever you want to call it… its simply a muscle that needs to be exercise to build. So start with smaller risks, build the muscle and go from there! You don't start out on bench with 500 pounds… you also don't start out by raising the dead… but at least start.
20-letni Jay Cook i 18-letnia Tanya Van Cuylenborg w listopadzie 1987 roku wyruszyli we wspólną podróż z Kanady do Seattle w Stanach Zjednoczonych.
Jay Cook grew up in Maple Ridge, British Columbia and moved to Prince George in 2003 to pursue a degree at the University of Northern British Columbia. Shortly after graduating, Jay followed another passion of his (health, sports and fitness) and became owner of Xconditioning. In addition to this successful entrepreneurial endeavour, Jay also found himself competing as a world-class athlete in the sport of powerlifting. After stepping back from Xconditioning in 2021, Jay spent time teaching in the Okanagan, before accepting a new role working with the City of Prince George and local RCMP detachment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Masters of VGM Season 2 starts June 1st, and is slated to kick off with Nerd Noise Radio C1E76: "The Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 2". To prime the pump of excitement for MoVGM in general, as well as to offer a "compare and contrast" between the incoming, much more polished and measured and matured (and much more well-produced) sequel, and this much more enthusiastic, revolutionary, optimistic, and "heart-ful" example of early, clunky-but-exuberant NNR magic, we are re-running the original ahead of time. I am eager to receive feedback on what everyone things of vol 1 vs vol 2. I think vol 2 is "better", but vol 1 is "more important". I also think vol 1 is more "joyful", even if more "awkward". But tell me what YOU think!! They also each contain exactly one track composed by......ME - in fact, in this original episode, it's even the opening track! Masters of VGM can be found at www.mastersofvgm.com as well as on Twitter and Discord, and perhaps also other places. NNR will be just one of some 20 or 30 different VGM podcasts. So, please check out the entire collection, and give the other great shows some love as well! :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 30 for Theme Thursday, June 14, 2018. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode: https://youtu.be/73kM8YsRUdU Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. Episode 268: On November 18, 1987, Jay Cook, 20, and Tanya Van Cuylenborg, 18, a young couple from Vancouver Island, went on a road trip to Seattle, Washington. Unfortunately, they were never seen alive again. Their bodies were discovered weeks later in separate locations. Tanya had been raped, shot, and left in a ditch in Skagit County. Jay was found strangled in the woods near Monroe, about 60 miles away. The case went unsolved for over three decades until 2018, when authorities were able to use genetic genealogy to identify a suspect. He was arrested and charged with the murders. The man pleaded not guilty. In 2021, after his trial, the man was the first to be convicted using genetic genealogy. The couple's killer was subsequently sentenced to life behind bars. A Killer in the Family - The Murders of Tanya Van Cuylenborg and Jay CookIn 1987, teenage sweethearts Tanya Van Cuylenborg and Jay Cook set out from Victoria, BC for a one-night trip to Seattle. Tragically they were never seen alive again. Somewhere along their route they encountered a violent stranger who targeted the trusting couple. But who was this evil predator, and would he strike again? The killer had left his DNA at the crime scene but with limited forensic testing available in 1987, the double murder case went cold. Many years passed before advances in genetic testing gave investigators an exciting new approach to potentially finding the killer. Could a stranger's DNA profile on a public ancestry database be the key to solving a double murder? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A relentless detective and an amateur genealogist solve a haunting cold case—and launch a crime-fighting revolution that tests the fragile line between justice and privacy. In November 1987, a young couple on an overnight trip to Seattle vanished without a trace. A week later, the bodies of Tanya Van Cuylenborg and her boyfriend Jay Cook were found in rural Washington. It was a brutal crime, and it was the perfect crime: With few clues and no witnesses, an international manhunt turned up empty, and the sensational case that shocked the Pacific Northwest gradually slipped from the headlines. In deep-freeze, long-term storage, biological evidence from the crime sat waiting, as Detective Jim Scharf poured over old case files looking for clues his predecessors missed. Meanwhile, 1,200 miles away in California, CeCe Moore began her lifelong fascination with genetic genealogy, a powerful forensic tool that emerged not from the crime lab, but through the wildly popular home DNA ancestry tests purchased by more than 40 million Americans. When Scharf decided to send the cold case's decades-old DNA to Parabon NanoLabs, he hoped he would finally bring closure to the Van Cuylenborg and Cook families. He didn't know that he and Moore would make history. Genetic genealogy, long the province of family tree hobbyists and adoptees seeking their birth families, has made headlines as a cold case solution machine, capable of exposing the darkest secrets of seemingly upstanding citizens. In the hands of a tenacious detective like Scharf, genetic genealogy has solved one baffling killing after another. But as this crime-fighting technique spreads, its sheer power has sparked a national debate: Can we use DNA to catch the murderers among us, yet still protect our last shred of privacy in the digital age—the right to the very blueprint of who we are?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Winston and I were joined by Kelli and Ashley from A Date with Murder podcast to cover two true crime cases from the PNW. Kelli and Ashley tell us all about the shitty Michael Braae who traveled all over the country to commit his crimes. Then, Winston and I cover the case of Tanya van Cuylenborg and Jay Cook - a previously unsolved case, recently solved and brought to trial using genetic genealogy DNA testing. Unfortunately, due to juror bias, the conviction was recently overturned and William Talbott is awaiting a 2nd trial. A groundbreaking discovery, the first of its kind, helped revive a 30 year old cold case.
In 1987, Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg had been dating for six months when they traveled from their home in British Columbia to Seattle, WA to run an errand for Jay's dad. When they didn't return from their overnight trip, their parents' worst fears were confirmed. It would take 30 years and significant advances in DNA testing and genetic genealogy to bring a killer to justice.

In 1987, Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg were young and in love. The high school sweethearts decided to leave their hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, to go on a quick road trip to Seattle—and that's where everything went wrong. Both of their bodies were found miles away from each other in different cities in Washington. With no apparent motive, zero suspects, and very little evidence, the case went cold for THIRTY years. Until... in 2018, forensic genealogy revealed the first person of interest in the case, and police moved in fast on this man to prove he was the murderer. There are so many twists and turns in this tragic case, and Chelle and Lisa discuss it all on Whose Crime is it Anyway? This week we take a look into a landmark case that was solved in Washington State using Genealogical DNA as the only evidence to convict a suspect of two murders from over 30 years ago.Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg embarked on an overnight trip from Victoria, Canada in November of 1987 to visit Seattle. Their murders were horrific and although DNA was collected, the case went immediately cold. Until the suspect's DNA got a partial match from a genealogical testing kit uploaded to GEDMatch. When compared, the suspects DNA was 100% matched to the DNA collected back in 1987. Eventually, William Talbott II was arrested and convicted based solely on the DNA. He maintains his complete innocence to this day.As this new development in technology increases, so does the need to ensure the safety of how it’s used to find and catch criminals. What cannot be denied is that countless victims and families are closer to the answers they deserve.Join us for a discussion on how important this technology is and how this has helped solve potentially unsolvable cases that otherwise would remain cold. This episode takes us up north to Canada where on November 18th, 1987, 20-year-old Jay Cook and his girlfriend 18-year-old Tanya Van Cuyenborg set out on an overnight road trip that would take them from their hometown of Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, to Seattle, Washington. They had planned on sleeping in the back of their van for the night, then collecting supplies for Jay's family's furnace company, before turning around and heading back home. The couple never arrived to collect the supplies, and when they didn't arrive home the next evening as planned, their families called the police to report the couple missing. Whether you are in the GPS tracking and installing industry or another industry, a big hurdle entrepreneurs are facing is the lack of professional salespeople. The quality of a company’s sales team can make or break its success. In this GPS Tracking And Installers Podcast episode, Tomas Keenan is talking salespeople with fellow entrepreneur Jay Cook. Jay Cook has been in the mobile electronics industry for over 20 years. He graduated from the Toronto location of Mobile Dynamics in 1996 with the hopes of becoming an installer. In 1998 he was hired at Columbus Car Audio in Columbus, OH as a salesperson with the hopes of becoming an installer. Instead, Jay became their top salesperson for most of his career. So much so, that his role evolved into continuously coaching and training his staff to sell based off of a high set of standards. In August of 2019, Jay won the Mobile Electronics Association’s – Salesperson of the Year award. Jay feels the mobile electronics industry is lacking professional salespeople. He is looking to give back and help grow the sales side of the industry with the lessons he has learned from coworkers, friends, and family. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On a large screen inside a packed Snohomish County courtroom, in Washington, a young Canadian couple smiled out at the dimmed room from the relaxed, faded scene of a party. It was the last known picture taken of Tanya Van Cuylenberg and Jay Cook together before they disappeared in November 1987. Their bodies were discovered days after they went missing, more than 60 miles apart. Thirty-one years later, William Talbott II is now standing trial as the first person to be accused of the double murder.

In 1987, 20-year-old Jay Cook and 18-year-old Tanya Van Cuylenborg were murdered on a trip from Victoria British Columbia to Seattle Washington. Police investigated the case for years but could not solve it. They had DNA evidence but no suspect to match it up to. It wasn't until 2018, with the help of forensic genealogy, that they were able to find out who left that DNA over 30 years ago. SO. Do you remember when we told you that the brutal murder of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg was the saddest mystery ever? Do you also remember last week when we told you that, actually, the Sharon Stevens lost love segment was the saddest mystery? Yeah, we were wrong. So. Very. Wrong. This week, we cover a little bit of everything: serial killers, WWII, spies, spooky trench coats! We also recap a heartbreaking, but also heartwarming, story of Holocaust survivor, Stephan Ross (formerly Szmulek Rozental). This story made us feel all the feelings. If you rewatched the episode in preparation for this podcast, we will go through it together! In the fall of 1987, a young Canadian couple set off from their hometown of Saanich, British Columbia to run a few errands in Seattle. They never made it there; police found their bodies a few days later near Bellingham, Washington. Jay Cook had been beaten and strangled. His girlfriend, Tanya Van Cuylenborg, had been raped and shot in the head. For more than 30 years their families held out hope that police would one day find the killer.
We are thrilled to come back from hiatus long enough to provide this update on the case from Episode 35 about Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg. Hopefully one day we will have to change the entire title of the Cold Case Dossier series due to them all having the same result. This week we tell Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg's story. These two sweethearts took a trip from Canada to Seattle, but never returned home. There were multiple active serial killers in the area at the time, but no resolution has ever been reached. In the Miracle Cross segment a church believes itself to be blessed by a miraculous event in which the crucifix that hung from the church ceiling depicted a Jesus Christ figure on a cross. Initially Jesus's eyes were slightly open and allegedly the eyes became closed and was observed by two boys after a church sermon. By looking at the side-by-side pictures of before and after the answer is pretty evident. Next we discuss a young couple who were stalked and murdered.
