A relationship with a brother or sister might well be the longest we ever have. It can be a source of huge mutual support in the sharing of great joys, and in the struggles of tough times. But sibling relationships can also be marked by conflict and rivalry, as we've seen in the public fracture of the relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry. Roy Jenkins meets people who've been estranged from their families for many years, and hears about the heartache family fracture can cause. Dr Lucy Blake, developmental psychologist at the University of the West of England, explains that in her research she's found that family estrangement is more common than we might think, but also how our notions of an 'ideal' family are hard to live up to. Fern Schumer Chapman, author of ‘Brother, Sister, Strangers: Sibling Estrangement and the Road to Reconciliation' examines the taboo around sibling estrangement. We examine how religious belief can be the cause painful disputes, and Assia shares how her conversion to Islam led to estrangement with her family. Amanda Morris from the Muslim Council of Britain explains the support offered to new Muslims, and how cherished sibling relationships are in the Qu'ran. We hear how faith can sometimes help heal divides, and Joe Connor from Elam Ministries explains how they help foster reconciliation between Christian converts and their families.

Takeaways:- ACT test scores are at the lowest level in 30 years. 42% of students met none of the college readiness benchmarks.- District schools are not providing what parents need so children are leaving them in large numbers.- Parents have realized that they would be better off unbundling education so that children receive different parts of their education in different places, not just at a single district school.- Odyssey is fundamentally changing how education is funded in the US.- The US has 132,000 K-12 schools. For context, there are 13,000 McDonald's locations. Teachers are the second largest occupation category in America after retail clerks.- Parents have been able to successfully push for programs like Odyssey's by contacting their state senator or congressperson. Thanks for listening — if you like what you hear, please review us on your favorite podcast platform.Check us out on the web at www.villageglobal.vc or get in touch with us on Twitter @villageglobal.Want to get updates from us? This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
In this episode I speak with Joe Connor, Founder of Experto Crede. Joe’s been listening to the podcast for a while and he and I connected after he reached out to discuss an article I wrote regarding AI in the healthcare space. In this conversation, we explore his experiences bringing AI powered healthcare projects to market in collaboration with the UK National Health Service and its clinicians. We take a look at some of various challenges he’s run into when applying ML and AI in healthcare, as well as some of his successes, such as tackling effective triage of mental health patients using emotion recognition within a chatbot environment. We also discuss data protections, especially GDPR, and the challenges that come along with building systems that are dependent on using patient data under these restrictions. Finally we take a look at potential ways to include clinicians in the building of these applications. The complete show notes can be found at https://twimlai.com/talk/169

Before the Revolutionary War, the tavern founded by Samuel Fraunces in lower Manhattan was the meeting place for the Sons of Liberty. During the Revolutionary War, the tavern took a cannonball through the roof, and after the war’s end, it’s where George Washington bid farewell to his officers. The tavern’s last true brush with history came 40 years ago. On Jan. 24, 1975, Puerto Rican nationalists set off a bomb in the tavern annex, injuring 50 people and killing four people. One off those victims was Frank Connor, a banker from Fair Lawn, New Jersey. His son Joe Connor joins us on The Gist to describe his ongoing work preserving his father’s legacy and pursuing justice.
