Get to the point! Do you know what your point is? How to make your point Episode 157 (Joel is based in New Jersey) In this conversation with Joel Schwartzberg we explore: What is a valid point? The structure and litmus test of a point How to tie sub-points to the big mission How many points are too many? How to create a meeting agenda based on points What the magic words to clarify your point? The importance of an action step The role of inspiration in your point About our guest, Joel Schwartzberg: He was the national champion in public speaking on the collegiate level. He's a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Inc.com and Toastmaster magazine. He is the author of Get to the Point, Sharpen your Message and make your Words Matter. His clients include State Farm Insurance, Comedy Central, and Brennan Centre for justice. Learn about his books and services at www.joelschwartzberg.com ----- Excerpt from this conversation with Joel Schwartzberg: So the funny thing about points is, we assume we know what one is because we use that language all the time. Get to the point, what's your point? Did you make your point, and it's presumed that it's something like an idea or a topic may be even a theme. But the truth of the matter, and what's most instructive and helpful for us is if we reimagined this word point, as something very specific, it's not a topic, it's not a theme. In essence, it's an argument or a proposition, you're basically making a case for something that if you nail it, your audience will think a new, or they'll take an action step that you want them to take. And that only happens when you make this proposition, this argument to them a case and you can tell it's a point because you can prove it with data with storytelling with reasonability, with all of Aristotle's tools, going way back when, but just as an example, because that's a description, and I like to really drill down. Let's talk about podcasting. So if I said to you, George, or you said to me, I want to talk today about podcasting. That's your topic. But what have you told me about podcasting? Is it on the rise? Or is it becoming antiquated? Is podcasting a good thing or a bad thing? Have there been evolutions in podcasting? Is there a good way to podcast a bad way to podcast? I have no idea the point you're trying to make if you use the word podcasting, and even if you said the importance of podcasting, or the evolution of podcasting? Are those things good or bad? Is it going up or down? This is why it's so important to distinguish between a theme and a topic or a point. ----- ----more---- Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in executive communication skills. As a leader we are called to be problem solvers. But we are also called to be great communicators. If we cannot communicate effectively...well...we will not be a leader for long. The part of communication in leadership that is rarely talked about is the "language" of leadership. Yes it is true or language can be affected by our tone, but language can also be the words we use, and how we use them. Language can be found in our authenticity or lack thereof. It also is comes in the language of giving hope and empathy. More importantly it needs to be a language that fulfills your teams needs. Still need help? In this episode Jason and Joel discuss:Coming up with your true pointAsking the right questionTips for speaking in webinarsTelling stories the right way Key Takeaways: Practice the “I believe that___” technique. If your point completes the sentence, then you've got it right. Start with the right question. Don't ask “what do I want to say?” or “what should I say?” Impact is the end result that you want, so ask instead “what do they want and need to hear?” You don't have to come up with it on your own, ask the community what people really need to hear. When speaking in webinars, dominate the frame. Make sure your head or shoulders are not cut off from the frame. Use a neutral background rather than any virtual background. Speak with a loud voice volume setting. Stories are great. They don't have to be cinematic but even when simple, it's still a good way to make yourself relatable to the audience. However, don't forget that the most important part of telling a story is the part where you attach relevance to the story. “People don't really remember what you said, they remember what you mean.” - Joel Schwartzberg Connect with Joel Schwartzberg:Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheJoelTruthLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joelschwartzberg/Website: www.joelschwartzberg.net Connect with Steve and Jason:LinkedIn: Jason or SteveWebsite: Rewire, Inc.: Transformed Thinking Email: grow@rewireinc.com Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine TallaAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. If you're in a leadership role today, you surely didn't get there by accident. You have vision. You're confident. And you're at the ready to offer support and lightning-quick responses. But if you don't effectively communicate these qualities to your people, how will they know you embody them? Frankly, they won't. Despite leaders giving themselves gold stars in communication, only 13% of U.S. employees say their leaders communicate well, according to Gallup research. And that's a colossal problem: 93% of workers surveyed by the Brunswick Group report that “leadership that communicates directly and transparently” is what keeps them on the job, bested only by pay and the ability to move up. The most powerful tool you have as a leader—to inform, engage, and inspire—is your voice, says veteran leadership communications coach Joel Schwartzberg. Yet all too often, our words fall flat; we get caught in our head, fail to truly understand our audience, or simply flub the landing. But it's our words and awareness of their impact that make the difference between simply managing teams and inspiring them to do their best work. • Only pay and advancement tops clear communications • “It's all important that you know which words matter” (Total Recorded Time is 22:39) Abraham Lincoln spoke briefly – perhaps for no more than three minutes -- at a ceremony in 1863 on the battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. At the same ceremony, another speaker droned on for two hours. But for well over a century, Lincoln's 272-word address is remembered, recited, and even enshrined while no one remembers anything of Edward Everett's 13,607-word oration. Definitely, words count -- if you use them correctly. And that's the point being driven by Joel Schwartzberg, a leadership communications coach whose clients have ranged from American Express to Comedy Central. But Mr. Schwartzberg adds a layer of nuance to the concept that “words count.” “In some cases, words count. And in some cases, they don't,” he says. “That's why it's all important that you know which words matter.” With tips and examples, he joins us for this Bizgnus podcast: Please click here to watch the interview: https://youtu.be/5pSruKnZG4s Mr. Schwartzberg's latest book is “The Language of Leadership: How to Engage and Inspire Your Team,” (Berrett-Koehler Publishers; July 2021). According to Gallup research only 13 percent of U.S. employees say their leaders communicate well. That is a potentially huge problem since, according to workers surveyed by the Brunswick Group, 93 percent say “leadership that communicates directly and transparently” is what keeps them on the job, topped only by pay and the ability to move up. Episode 160 of the Business Bookshelf podcast - Joel Schwartzberg - Author of "The Language of Leadership". Joel is a communications coach and writer. He is an expert in the practice of successful presentations and point-making, Joel's articles have appeared in Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, Toastmaster Magazine, and The Huffington Post, and he's been the featured guest on many business and communication podcasts. Joel is the author of “The Language of Leadership”. Everyone seems to have an opinion about leadership. We know good leaders Eat Last, Lean In, Break the Rules, Dare to Lead, and are Radically Candid as well as extremely aware of their Tribes, Drive, and Principles. But books about these topics overlook the value of leadership impression—the instant projection you exude as a leader. How do leaders sound? What do leaders say and not say? How do leaders tell stories, send emails, run meetings, conduct video conferences, give speeches, conduct interviews, and even listen to others? Drawing on his experiences as a leadership coach Joel offers practical tips and entertaining but eye-opening exercises that help readers convey genuine and impactful leadership in every conceivable situation. In his 14-plus years as a strategic communications trainer, the biggest obstacle our guests comes across - one that connects directly to nervousness, stammering, rambling, and epic fail - is that most speakers and writers don't have a point. They typically have just a title, a theme, a topic, an idea, an assertion, a catchphrase, or even something much less. A point is something more. It's a contention you can propose, argue, defend, illustrate, and prove. When we have a point, our influence snaps into place. We communicate belief, conviction, and urgency. Our guest shows us how to identify a point, leverage it, stick to it, and sell it and how to train others to identify and successfully make their own points. In a world of information over abundance standing out becomes even more difficult, yet so many of us don't know how to make a point. As professional communications shifted from physical to virtual, he noticed firsthand both highly effective and utterly ruinous approaches to using video conference technology to communicate and make strong points. We welcome public speaking trainer and author of Get to the point, sharpen your message and make your words matter and friend of the show Joel Schwartzberg We discuss an overview of Get to the point and the takeaways from Joel's Harvard Business review article entitled “How to Elevate Your Presence in a Virtual Meeting” We discuss: * How we often have what we think is a point, but it is often just: * A topic * A title * A theme * Uptalking * Bias in communication * Tips for panelists and MCs * How we formulate a point and the “I believe that test” * Virtual meetings in a digital world * Elevating both your point and your presence * Projecting your voice * Proximity plays a part The HBR article is here: https://bit.ly/2TLkpvk Joel is here: https://www.joelschwartzberg.net/ Previous episode with Joel is here: https://bit.ly/2ZGRw7y

Every time you communicate, you're doing it for a reason. You want someone to understand something, do something, or change something. You're trying to make a point. But the only way to make a point is to have a point. And the surprising truth is, very few communicators know their point or even understand what a point is, rendering them pointless. In this episode, Joel Schwartzberg explains how too many people confuse a point with a title, a topic, an idea, a theme, or even something much less. A point is something more. It's a contention you can propose, argue, illustrate, and prove. A real point creates a position of value. Joel not only clarifies what a point is, but he also shed light on how to determine if what you're saying is a point or if it falls short. If you want to more effectively reach your audiences, listen to what Joel has to say. Resources for this episode: - joelschwartzberg.net

Well, certainly not all of them think that but there does seem to be a growing entitlement mentality in our culture. So where did it come from? According to psychologist Michael Wetter, it is primarily a parenting problem. Parents want to protect their children and keep them happy but the unintended consequence is that kids are not prepared for the real world. Dr. Wetter is author of the book Earn It!: What to Do When Your Kid Needs an Entitlement Intervention (http://amzn.to/2BZL1hO) and he offers some great advice and insight to deal with this problem.
