In a world where new forms of media have enabled the artistic expression of numerous cultures and experiences, the question must be asked: how do the millions of Latter-day Saints around the globe define themselves artistically? This question is tackled by many Mormon Studies scholars in the 2024 book, Latter-day Saint Art: A Critical Reader. The book's editors, Mason Allred and Amanda Beardsley, sit down with host Nicholas Shrum for this episode of Scholars & Saints. Together, they discuss the diverse nature of global Latter-day Saint paintings, film, architecture, and other visual media. They also examine the universal themes that arise in this artwork—themes that relate to broader Mormon experiences. While they don't wish to create a canon of Latter-day Saint art, both Allred and Beardsley discuss the impact they hope this book will have as the first critical treatment of Mormon works of art.Mason Allred is the Associate Professor of Communcation, Media, and Culture at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Amanda Beardsley is the Cayleff and Sakai Faculty Scholar in Women's Studies at San Diego State University.

The Power of Speaking Up; Boundary-Setting in Therapy and Beyond How do you navigate ruptures in therapy if the therapist overshares, or does not meet your needs? Rupture and repair are possible. Are there ways to self-disclose in appropriate ways that benefit the client? We share a vignette about therapeutic rupture. As a client, do you know how to bring up concerns to your therapist? As a therapist, are you creating safety for your clients, so they know that you welcome their feedback? If done skillfully, repair work can create a stronger therapeutic bond, and more intimacy. GUEST Jen Perry, MSEd, MA, LPC HIGHLIGHTS Speak up if your therapist violates your boundaries or wastes your time. You have a right to use your voice and say that this behavior was not okay. Consider giving your therapist feedback if they make a mistake or have an off day. This can help repair any ruptures in the therapeutic relationship and strengthen the alliance. Remember that therapy is a partnership, and you have agency in the process. Don't be afraid to ask for what you need or express your feelings. If you're struggling to show up authentically, consider seeking out a therapist or coach who can help you feel safe and supported. If you're a therapist, practice skillful self-disclosure by sharing information in a measured, appropriate, and helpful way that helps your clients feel connected. Be open to discomfort and learning to tolerate it. The goal of therapy is not always to feel better, but to learn how to manage conflict and discomfort in a healthy way. GUEST BIO Jen Perry, MSEd, MA, LPC has been a psychotherapist for 20 years. She specializes in helping Highly Sensitive People thrive in love, work, and parenting Highly Sensitive Children. Twenty-seven years ago, WestJet took to the air with just three aircraft and five destinations. Today, the Calgary-based airline serves more than 100 cities across four continents.Overseeing the operation is CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech. He's a newcomer to Canada but not to the industry, having spent two decades working for and running airlines in Europe. When he arrived in Canada last year, he was struck by the country's rugged geography and “sheer size”, which brought home to him the importance of air travel. “In Europe, if you want to get from city A to city B, you have tons of options,” he says, including air, rail and road. “You can even take a bicycle in many cases. [Cities are] not very far apart.” That's hardly the case in Canada, where the alternative to air travel is often a journey lasting several days. “Aviation and airlines are an absolute essential service for thousands and thousands of communities … This is just a geographical fact,” he tells Goldy Hyder on the Speaking of Business podcast.Given that, von Hoensbroech says he's surprised that government-imposed surcharges on air travel – including airport rent, security and navigation fees, and federal taxes– are “far more expensive” in Canada compared to other countries.“I'm surprised that the government is not putting more effort into making aviation more affordable,” he says. “Actually, they're doing the exact opposite.”Listen to Goldy Hyder's full conversation with Alexis von Hoensbroech – including his thoughts on the Calgary Stampede, and which NHL superstar hails from his hometown in Germany – on the Speaking of Business podcast.

In episode 202 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we're pleased to be joined by Pyry Lukkarila, Head of Coach Development for the Finnish Ice Hockey Association. Lukkarila has played a key role in re-shaping Finland's coach education system and his unique role in the hockey industry has him in a constant state of uncovering what's next by researching the top programs and coaches in and outside of hockey. If you look at the recent string of international success by a country of just under 67,000 hockey players, it's clear that his work is paying off. In the past three World Championships, the Finns have captured two Golds and one Silver. The previous eight World Junior Championships have resulted in three Golds, one Silver and one Bronze. And in the past six U18 World Championships, they have brought home two Golds, a Silver and a Bronze. Listen as he shares why coach education must always precede player development, why nothing is accomplished without good player-coach communication, and why alignment is critical to an affective development process.

In this episode, I have a conversation with Maya Acosta. Maya is the host of the Healthy Lifestyle Solutions podcast designed to remind listeners that they have more power over their health than what they have been told. Married to a vascular surgeon can be overwhelming because Maya learns about the chronic diseases that her husbands' patients live with. Her goal as a wellness educator is to help empower others to advocate for their own health. She has a deep interest in raising awareness about health disparities and racism in healthcare that can keep patients from taking control of their own health. She also wants to inform all people about the benefits of lifestyle medicine which allows people to make lifestyle modifications that can help prevent, halt, and in some cases reverse disease. At the age of 35, Maya felt like she was in her 50's. At the time, she had extreme fatigue, always felt exhausted, and didn't have the energy to exercise. A few years later, she would be diagnosed as hypothyroid and blood work would reveal that she had mercury poisoning. She changed her diet and lifestyle. Today she is 51 years old and feels better than she did at 35. She now seeks to live her best life. Her goal is to enhance her quality of life and increase her longevity.Listen as we discuss:The role culture has on nutrition and achieving sustainable healthHealth disparities and racism in healthcare keep patients from taking control of their own healthThe 6 pillars of lifestyle medicineSteps to take with mastering fitness and mindsetConnect with Tamikawww.tamikamctier.comhttps://www.instagram.com/_tamikamctier/Connect with Mayahttps://www.instagram.com/maya_hls_podcast/https://www.healthylifestylesolutions.org/

"Marriage is hard, but it's not too difficult for God to make it work." Even the best marriages require intentional effort to thrive. So, what happens when a relationship is complicated by dwarfism, discord, and discrimination?Last week, Angela Muir Van Etten talked with Crystal about her passion for raising awareness and advocating for people with dwarfism and disability. Today, Angela is back on the podcast to share her marriage story: how God took two people with numerous challenges and grew them into a faithful couple who have honored him. Standing at 3 feet, 4 inches, Angela and Robert’s common height wasn’t enough to hold their marriage together. When workaholism, a failing business, and a breakdown in communication put their relationship on the brink, they needed help! In today’s conversation, hear where Angela and Robert sought help and how they’ve been able to face life’s challenges head-on with love and faith. Their now 35-year marriage is a truly a picture of God’s power being made perfect in weakness!Learn more about Angela Muir Van EttenRead more about Angela and Robert’s love story in Angela's new book, Pass Me Your Shoes: A Couple with Dwarfism Navigates Life’s Detours with Love and Faith. Nearly getting divorced was the catalyst for a major breakthrough in love, sex and marriage, not to mention money in our lives. But most people believe the myth that relationships are supposed to fade after a couple years. Brain science is also telling us that we are wired for betrayals – that the next pretty thing is what we will want – and not our spouse! It’s all toxic lies, but it’s one most of us believe. And, instead of going forward most people, most couples go backwards when they hit a breakdown, boredom or betrayal. But breakdown is a doorway… In this episode: We break the myths of relationship, sex and even neuroscience. The real reason relationships languish and what to do about it and even how to overcome your own programming. You’ll learn what breakdown REALLY is from a spiritual and relational perspective and why COVID-19 is actually a mirror to THIS gift… Get the low-down on 3-steps to shift out of struggle, disconnection and blame, that you won’t hear in therapy! Why your work, kids, family and the pursuits of life are cock-blocking your greatest desires and how to shift that! We’re all being called to go deeper. Our relationship ought to hold us to the fire. In this episode you will learn how to plant down and confront the inner “demons” and gobble them up through sex and connection. For most of us, the society we live in, portrays the world as polarized. Something is good or bad, safe or dangerous. When we perceive the world as polarized, we perceive seperateness. I am this, you are that. The more seperate we feel, the more we fear. The more we fear, the more we need to protect ourselves, and on it goes. When we are in this mindset, this mindset of fear, and separation, the way we perceive the world, is augmented. We act based on projections and ideas that we have in our minds, and this can be a very costly way to live, creating discomfort, negativity and suffering for ourselves and those around us. Non violent communication is a practical, down to earth tool, to start reformating our minds, to look beyond the polarization. To see that below the surface, we are much more connected, than separate. With this structure, and the tools provided, we can learn to connect with others deeply and emphatically, regardless of how their behaving, we can learn to identify our needs and communicate them, and we are able to diffuse conflict like never before. We become the masters of our own domain, we take accountability for our emotions and our experience, and start to act with integrity from a place of deeper knowing. This style of communication is gold. I'm telling you, its gold. It will change the way you receive and perceive reality, and how you act in the world. I couldn't recommend it more. NVC is simple and straight forward, yet profound in its wisdom. We also discuss how your mood can impact your pet's behaviour and energy levels. This conversation takes many twists and turns as we discuss our connection to nature and how we receive energy through our left hand. Have you ever had a conversation with someone that went nowhere?Have you ever tried communicating with someone and you don't feel heard? It might be because you are trying to be a really good active listener.I bet you didn't know active listening sucked? So what should we try instead if we have been taught that the best way to listen is through "active listening"?Why not try Passive Listening?Passive listening is this crazy idea that maybe you don't need to add to the conversation other than just be there to listen and provide support to the person who is trying to communicate with you.You don't need to have all the answers. You don't always have to respond with the perfect answer. Sometimes the way to improve or build on a relationship is to just be there and listen with no intentions or opinions other than to just be open and listen. This can also help improve your communication with staff and at work, by allowing people to feel validated and heard. This simple idea can do wonders for your overall communication skills.

Communication is about emotions, not just the facts. This is true when sharing about a good time as well as when discussing an issue that’s placing a strain on the marriage. However, it is much more critical to understand this when dealing with the latter, meaning the issues.

You were misunderstood. Although you have spent a lot of effort to be precise and clear. But nevertheless somehow your counterpart has horribly misunderstood you. And now you're in big trouble. Perhaps your spouse interpreted your "Nice" for the new dress as inadequate. Or there was this tone of desinterest in your voice. Or you just run into this ugly problem at work and your mind is still in the office. You all remember what happens after such situation. Something has gone wrong. How can we avoid such kind of situation? Everything we say OR not say, everything we do OR not do, transfers a message. We cannot decide whether we communicate or do not communicate. We always communicate. Communication happens verbally and non-verbally, explicitely and implicitely. We should be aware that a risen eyebrow, a turn-away face, a dismissive look transfers information to the receiver. You guys should listen to this episode if you want to understand why communicating could sometimes be that complicated, erroneous or misleading. If you want to improve your skills herein you're exactly right in this session. If you want to get the tips in written form, feel free to use the link below to get your personal copy of the tips-list.
