In this episode, I help leadership coach and podcaster Julie Neale work through the discomfort she feels on stage.Though she's right at home behind the microphone, being on stage stirs up something different. Julie may look confident, but inside, she's anxious — silently struggling.Together, we trace her nerves back to early experiences that shaped her identity, including a pivotal moment when her father, with the best intentions, publicly praised her in a way that became a role she felt expected to play — even at the expense of her own truth. We also talk about how to feel more grounded, expand your stage presence, and create a sense of belonging in front of an audience. If you've ever felt unseen, misrepresented, or not fully yourself in the spotlight, this conversation will speak to you.Click here to check the full show notes.

Julie Neale is a life and leadership coach, mom to two neurodivergent boys, and creator of Mother's Quest, the Mother's Quest Podcast, and the Live Your EPIC Year Planner. Started in 2016, Mother's Quest provides inspiration, coaching, and community for mothers who want to live their version of an E.P.I.C. life while raising their children. At the age of 50, Julie received a diagnosis of ADHD, realizing that she is also neurodivergent. The diagnosis explained a lot and has provided a window for her to understand better what it's like for her children to embrace their differences while finding strategies to address the challenges. This year, Julie is serving on the UCLA Parents' Council. She looks forward to working alongside her son Ryan, from a parent perspective, to support neurodivergent students and their families at UCLA. Ryan Neale is a neurodivergent sophomore at UCLA, planning to double major in Communication and Disability Studies with a minor in Film Studies. He is part of the College Scholars Program at UCLA and recently was selected as part of the 2023 Chancellor's Leadership Program cohort. He is passionate about neurodiversity advocacy and sharing his own experiences to pave the way for others. He is currently a staff member at the Bruin Resource Center, where he is a student lead on a new campus-wide neurodiversity initiative to make UCLA more inclusive for students like him. This summer, he served on staff for the Stanford Neurodiversity Project - Research, Education, and Advocacy Camp for high schoolers wanting to create neurodiversity advocacy projects. He was also a speaker at the 2021 Stanford Neurodiversity Summit and has been a guest host on the Mother's Quest Podcast. Ryan was diagnosed with autism at the age of 18 months old and also identifies with ADHD and anxiety. April is Autism Awareness Month. April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day. I was so honored to have Ryan and Julie here to talk about neurodiversity, including autism, and all that Ryan is doing to build inclusive spaces for kids like him on college campuses.   Listen in to hear Ryan and Julie share: Ryan's optimism around the neurodiversity movement, esp in collegiate environments Ryan's autism diagnosis at 18 months and his experience of learning of his diagnosis at age 13 Ryan's disconnection from his diagnosis given his propensity for rich connections How Julie was diagnosed with ADHD when going through menopause  The difference in the ways Ryan and Julie accepted and integrated their respective diagnoses What Ryan's transition into college life has been like How Ryan has leaped into neurodivergence advocacy at UCLA Links mentioned: Connect with Julie: https://mothersquest.com Connect with Ryan: www.ryanjneale.com  Mother's Quest on IG: www.instagram.com/mothersquestpod Ryan on IG: www.instagram.com/ryan.neale04 Ryan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-neale-031112176/ Autism Story Telling Project in San Fransisco: https://www.autismstorytellingproject.com/  Spark Course about Ryan's college experience  Mother's Quest Podcasts with Ryan related to neurodiversity: https://mothersquest.com/ep-93-learning-outside-the-lines-in-college-with-neurodivergent-advocates-ryan-neale-jonathan-mooney/ https://mothersquest.com/embracing-neurodiversity-and-being-an-adult-with-julie-lythcott-haims-and-ryan-neale/ https://mothersquest.com/ep-18-yolo-you-only-live-once-and-other-milestone-reflections-with-ryan-neale/ Learn more about your ad choices. Being a mother is hard, and often times women find themselves stuck in the identity of being a mother and lose their sense of purpose in life. When you're building a home and a career and finding the balance of the division of labor as well as living a life of meaning and purpose, it can be very difficult and stifling. There are ways that mothers can find an opportunity to reflect on their own growth, dreams and in this episode we discuss how. Julie Neale is a leadership coach, community builder, and writer. Her “for-purpose” venture, Mother's Quest, provides inspiration, coaching and relationship-building so that mothers, and those who work with young people, can connect to support and resources, fulfill their unique purpose, and live their E.P.I.C. lives. After a 20-year career as a leader in youth-serving non-profit organizations, Julie turned her focus to coaching, training at the Coaches Training Institute, and facilitating a process known as “reflection” for youth development professionals.Listen to the full episode as she shares insights and ideas on how to live an E.P.I.C. and transformative life. In honor of Mother's Quest turning 5, all season we've been sharing Throwback Thursday episodes from the archives. I've been excitedly anticipating resharing this episode with you with actress, author of the memoir From Scratch, and now co-creator and executive producer of the Netflix series by the same name, Tembi Locke. Since the limited series release just a few days ago, From Scratch has already climbed to the Top Ten in 74 countries and has captured the hearts of so many. Throughout my day today, I've been alternating between watching the show and relistening to my episode with Tembi, also beautifully dedicated by her sister and show co-creator Attica Locke. The combination of the two has rekindled an appreciation in me for honoring our ancestors, for the power of answering the call of our heroes journey, and of looking for light in the darkness to guide us through challenging times. Tembi says at the beginning of our conversation that she hoped it would be evergreen and we could find new meaning if we returned to it in a different time. That intention came true. This episode is a gift that feels just right for today. Like it did for me, I hope it provides the wisdom, inspiration and light you seek right now.  More About the Netflix Series ‘From Scratch' Watch From Scratch on NetflixNY Times Article: In ‘From Scratch,' the Locke Sisters Tell a Story of Love, Loss and Food Mother's Quest Inspiration Guide: Volume 1 Engage Tembi's episode is just one of many featured in the Mother's Quest Inspiration Guide, part personal memoir, part reflective journal, drawing on over 70+ interviews on the Mother's Quest Podcast. I'm excited to welcome you to a special episode of the Mother's Quest Podcast that I am extremely grateful for, just in time for Thanksgiving, featuring the amazing Julie Lythcott-Haims and my 17-year-old son Ryan Neale. Julie is an incredible mother to two, a former Stanford Dean and New York Times bestselling author of the anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult, which gave rise to a TED Talk that has more than 5 million views. Her second book is the critically-acclaimed and award-winning prose poetry memoir Real American, which illustrates her experience as a Black and biracial person in white spaces. I'm so fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview Julie for the podcast several years ago when that book was first released. When I heard about Julie's new book Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, I knew I wanted to invite her back to the podcast again. And, I hoped that my son Ryan, on the threshold of adulthood himself, would join us in the conversation. The stars aligned and Ryan was available the day of the interview, enabling Julie, Ryan, and I to explore the concepts of her book, about navigating adulthood and embracing our differences, especially our neurodiversity, in deeply personal and relevant ways.  In this episode, I'm also excited to share a dedication from Deborah Reber, former podcast guest, fellow mother on a quest, and host of the TiLT Parenting Podcast.Deborah's heart-felt dedication honors Julie and other mothers raising neurodivergent children. I could not agree more with Deborah's assessment about what an exceptional human Julie is, about the power of Julie's commitment to put the stories of a diverse group of young people with different identities on the pages of her book, and about the impact of Julie's work for normalizing and honoring differences.  As you hear our conversation unfold, I know you'll be as struck as I was by Julie's wisdom and humility as she talks with Ryan, helping him to understand that he deserves to be cherished for who he is, that he can approach things like writing in ways that work for his differently-wired mind, and that he can seek out environments, like college, that enables him to play to his strengths and allow him to thrive. Since our conversation, Ryan was able to take Julie's advice to heart, using voice to text without shame to write his personal statement for college applications and sharing his personal insights on a panel at the recent Stanford Neurodiversity Summit. You can follow the link in the show notes to listen. Finally, this conversation is a demonstration that there is no destination to becoming an adult, but an ongoing journey of learning and discovery, that parents and their children can support one another in reciprocity with curiosity, and that we can all benefit from asking ourselves the question from Mary Oliver's famous poem, that Julie gives us as our challenge, “What is it that we want to do with our one wild and precious life?”As we approach Thanksgiving, the five-year birthday of the launch of Mother's Quest, and my 50th birthday, I can say there is nothing I'd rather do than hold space for a conversation like this one and share it with you.   About Julie: Julie Lythcott-Haims believes in humans and is deeply interested in what gets in our way. She is the New York Times bestselling author of the anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult which gave rise to a TED Talk that has more than 5 million views. Her second book is the critically-acclaimed and award-winning prose poetry memoir Real American, which illustrates her experience as a Black and biracial person in white spaces. A third book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, is out now. Julie is a former corporate lawyer and Stanford dean, and she holds a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard, and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. She serves on the board of Common Sense Media, and on the advisory board of LeanIn.Org, and she is a former board member at Foundation for a College Education, Global Citizen Year, The Writers Grotto, and Challenge Success. She volunteers with the hospital program No One Dies Alone. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner of over thirty years, their itinerant young adults, and her mother.    Connect with Julie:  Website  Twitter Instagram LinkedIn   About RyanRyan Neale is a neurodivergent 12th Grader from San Mateo, California. His parents discovered he was differently wired when he was 18 months old but he has been in fully mainstream education for his academic career, with most people around him not knowing about some of the struggles that he faces. His experiences publicly masking his neuro differences have given him a unique perspective on many of the struggles neurodiverse people face, such as public stigma, ableism, and the ever-present desire to fit in. As he has begun advocating more for his needs, he has high hopes to use his perspective and communication skills to increase public understanding of neurodiversity, and hopefully create a more inclusive society for everyone. In his free time, he enjoys playing varsity basketball for his high school team, coaching youth sports, roughhousing with his little brother, and diving headfirst into his many fantasy special interests. Revisited: From Grief to Advocacy and a Circle of Mothers with Trayvon Martin’s Mother Sybrina Fulton

I’m honored to bring this special episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast to you with mother, activist, writer, co-founder of the Trayvon Martin Foundation and an inspiration to so many, Sybrina Fulton.  The episode is the last in a series I’ve recorded for the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative on the subject of gun safety and the intersectional impact of gun violence on our communities.  Unfortunately, Sybrina deeply knows the grief that comes in the wake of gun violence. But, after the deadly 2012 shooting of her beloved son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin, she felt compelled to rise up, literally pushing herself to get out of her bed, becoming the voice for her son and embarking on a journey to bring awareness to senseless gun violence and racial profiling.   In 2016, Sybrina rallied to the forefront at the Democratic National Convention with a group of African American trailblazing women, connected by tragedy, who became known as “Mothers of the Movement” for the “Black Lives Matter” Movement the death of their children sparked.  She didn’t stop there. In 2017, Sybrina co-authored her first book, Rest in Power, The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, a memoir recounting the death of her son, which became the subject of a docu-series that debuted this year, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, produced by hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. This intimate conversation, over a year in the making, was a unique opportunity to delve into Sybrina’s own journey, how the E.P.I.C. guideposts show up in her life and in her activism, and to hear her powerful call to action to invest in mothers, by reaching out to mothers grieving in our own communities and by contributing to her “Circle of Mothers,” a labor of love that came to her in her dreams.  I’m grateful to activist Michael Skolnik, who dedicated this episode, for connecting me to Sybrina and for inviting us to spread this conversation far and wide and direct resources to help mothers turn their grief into healing and advocacy, following Sybrina’s powerful example.  It costs $1500 to sponsor a grieving mother to attend Circle of Mothers. Michael and I have each pledged the first $3,000 to a GoFundMe campaign, each of us contributing $1500 to help a mother who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend.  Much appreciation,  Julie Neale   P.S. Know someone who you think would appreciate this special episode? Share this conversation!   This Episode is Dedicated by: Michael Skolnik Michael Skolnik was recently profiled in the NY Times and identified as “the man you go to if you want to leverage the power of celebrity and the reach of digital media to soften the ground for social change.” But, besides all of that, he is most proud to be the father of Mateo Ali, a rambunctious five year old.  He is the co-founder and partner of The Soze Agency, a social impact agency that partners with companies, non-profits, foundations and movements to create campaigns that uplift compassion, authenticity and equity. He is a respected leader in the new social justice movement, and has helped ignite conversations around America’s relationship with race, the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown and Eric Garner, and the Obama and Trump presidencies. He is a prolific voice on social media with more than 350,000 followers, and a regular commentator on outlets such as CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. Michael serves on the Board of Directors for Rock The Vote, The Trayvon Martin Foundation, Policy Link, The Gathering For Justice and The Young Partners Board of The Public Theater. Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Twitter The Soze Agency Learn more about Michael Skolnik: https://about.me/michaelskolnik In This Episode We Talk About: What Sybrina wishes everyone would know about approaching a conversation with a mother who has lost a child. My 14 year old son’s question to Sybrina about what it feels like when your calling and the powerful work you’re doing is sparked by a tremendous loss. Why we need systemic and cultural change, and more awareness-raising conversations, to keep young people of color safe from racial profiling. The tragic death of Chinedu Okobi, an unarmed young black man who was tasered to death by San Mateo County deputies, just 20 minutes from my own home. The importance for grieving mothers to remember the things that they used to love and what Sybrina’s joyful outlet is The Circle of Mothers and how the idea to create it came to Sybrina in a dream. Sybrina’s challenge for all of us to open our hearts and to reach out to mothers, across differences, who have lost their child to let them know we care. Let them know that they are not alone.  Learn More About Sybrina Fulton: After the death of her beloved son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin, in February 2012, Sybrina Fulton was charged with a new mission. A desire to transform family tragedy into social change allowed her to establish the Trayvon Martin Foundation in March 2012. As Fulton traverses the globe, she passionately embarks on a journey designed to bring awareness to senseless gun violence and serves as an advocate to families, the catalyst for her dream project, the “Circle of Mothers.” Winning the national support of president-elect Hillary Clinton, Fulton rallied to the forefront in 2016 at the Democratic National Convention with a cadre of African American trailblazing women known as “Mothers of the Movement.” The women, connected by tragedy, are the inspiration behind the “Black Lives Matter.” In 2017, Fulton co-authored her first book, Rest in Power, The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, a memoir recounting the death of her son, and the subject of a six-part docuseries, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, produced by hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter for Paramount Network and BET (July 2018). Bestowed with many distinguished awards, Sybrina Fulton has represented the United States at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss racial discrimination; the National Urban League, Black Lives Matter, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, The Triumph Awards (2016), Essence Festival & Conference (2017, 2018), and was selected as the White House’s guest of honor for the unveiling of former President Barak Obama’s initiative, “My Brother’s Keeper.” Fulton is also one of the 2018 recipients of VH1’s Trailblazer Honor Award. A Miami native and graduate of Florida Memorial University, Sybrina Fulton, along with her son, Jahvaris, are on a mission to build better, safer communities. She is a proud member of the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Metropolitan Dade County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. She created the Circle of Mothers as a way to empower women. The purpose of the Circle of Mothers is to bring together mothers who have lost children or family members to senseless gun violence for the purpose of healing, empowerment, and fellowship towards the larger aim of community building.  Connect with Sybrina at: Facebook Twitter Instagram www.circleofmothers.org www.trayvonmartinfoundation.org

Why is Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop so polarizing? We’ll hear two very different opinions about the brand. Plus, one of Goop Guides go-to healers is here in the Forty Thrive studio. Not only do we discuss the brand new Goop Lab on Netflix (spoiler: I share my own opinion on episodes 1-3), but we dive deeper into what’s really happening when we claim to be supporting each other as women.  Plus, my big, fat mess up. I totally call myself out. If you are part of our free and private community, I’m sure you saw the post recently about Gwyneth Paltrow’s new Netflix show, Goop Lab. The website's been in existence for over a decade but the Netflix show just launched and is definitely getting people talking. I asked a simple question, “How do you feel about group in three words or less?“  • Overpriced vagina candle • Snake oil con woman • Vile elitist pseudoscience  These were just a few of the comments that were flowing in soon after posting. But not everyone was hopping on the anti-Goop bandwagon. There were actually plenty of women who shared quite positive opinions.  • Optimizing your life • Interesting, relevant, refreshing  One woman shared, "She's innovative and pushing the envelope, whether you agree with her or not." Dr. Suzanne Gilberg Lenz, OB/Gyn and Advocate for Women's Integrative Health, weighs in, calling Goop "a wolf in sheep's clothing." Guest:  Stacey Justis, professional intuitive tarot card reader and energy healer. She is also is certified in Hypnotherapy, past life regression, EFT and Reiki. Goop Guide calls her “Refreshingly laid-back and smart, equal parts straight-up psychic and intuitive life coach.” Stacey helps private clients and groups connect with spirit through her energy work and collaborates with them to guide them to their own personal power and supports truly transformative healing. She provides insight as well as practical tools to achieve goals. She is a conduit for the journey of self-discovery and delivers messages, helps heal emotional wounds and fears, and even unlocks reasons for unexplained physical pain. Stacey is devoted to empowering her clients to create the lives they’ve always wanted and realize their true purpose and potential. And, at times, it can feel like a hamster wheel. And I think there’s a lot of pressure to continue producing content every week.” ~Melissa Guller, Everything is Teachable & Book Smart Happy end of the year, end of the decade, podcast listeners! As the days wind down, I thought this the perfect time to discuss milestone episodes. To be totally honest with you, I hadn’t given the topic much thought until the incredible Sarah Buino, host of Conversations With A Wounded Healer (and one of my clients) asked if I had any suggestions for marking her 100th episode. Ok then! Time to commence thinking about milestones! But where to start?  Listen, hitting publish on your first episode is just as much a milestone as posting your hundredth so don’t let numbers put you off. I chatted with several podcasters whose interpretations of what constitutes a milestone vary. Julie honors both the meaning and the mess of life and parenthood and believes our children and youth challenge us to grow into our best selves. She is on a mission to live a truly epic life and through her example inspire her children to do the same her for purpose.   Her for-purpose venture Mother's Quest provides inspiration, coaching, and community so that mothers and those who work with young people can connect to support and resources, fulfill their unique purpose and live their epic lives. After a 20 year career as a leader in youth-serving nonprofit organizations, Julie turned her focus to coaching training at the Coaches Training Institute and facilitating a process known as Reflection for youth development professionals. Through this and her parenting experience, she realized that mothers and those who mother need an opportunity to reflect on their own growth, dreams, and plans, and created Mother's Quest to champion them with common care .   She masterfully taps into her own curiosity and intuition to help her clients slow down from the business of life and work, reflect on what matters, clarify a future vision and move into action. In the fall of 2017, she founded the Women Podcasters in Solidarity initiative to raise awareness and dollars for social justice issues through the power of podcasting. The first season focused on anti-racism and police accountability. We're going to talk more about that initiative on today's show. When she's not wrestling with her kindergartner or driving her team to basketball practice, you can find her squeezing in 10 minutes of yoga and meditation, believing something is better than nothing and staying up way too late to watch a double hitter of Handmaid's Tale and Super Soul Sunday. Join us!   "It's the discomfort, I think, is when we know we're really on to something.” “It really starts with like one step, one conversation and everything flows from there if you stay committed to the process.” “Just say, ‘I'm not going to forget that this matters.’” “Perfection is really a tool of white supremacy.” “Even if you start with just one conversation, one relationship that you build or that you extend yourself out to on a cause that matters to you, that is a really powerful place to start with incredible ripple effect possible.”   What you’ll hear in this episode: The importance of the modeling of continuing to grow and evolve as a human when that's the expectation we have of young people The value of holding a growth mindset around conversations about race Resources to learn about having conversations about race with our kids What is the Women Podcasters In Solidarity Initiative Giving our boys permission to cry and have emotion The power of conversation to create change Lessons learned from social justice activism How ego gets in the way of relationships Moving from transactional relationships to authentic connection   What does Joyful Courage mean to you? Well, do you know Sage Hobbs? She's another amazing woman podcaster. She has a podcast called Naked Conversations and she interviewed me and we talk about some of these issues as well. She started with, "what does it mean to be brave or what is courage?" and I think at the time I remembered saying "It's like, you know, standing, I don't know if it was standing but standing for what matters to you. And you might have fear but moving through it anyways from a place of love." And what I'm appreciating about this question about joyful courage is, taking action and standing for the things that matter, even if you might be feeling afraid and you do it anyway from a place of love. Along the way you also find joy. There have been so many moments where I've been cheering, you know, I'm thinking about some women in my community who have been sharing the posts about the Circle of Mother's campaign. And every time I see one more mother reach out to her community, one at a time, donations of $20 or $30, I am filled with joy. There is a joyfulness about, you know, seeing again, the seeds of what you've been planting growing in the ways that you hoped.   Resources: Slay Like a Mother book The Mask of Motherhood Ted Talk Nicole Lee episode on Mother’s Quest podcast So You Want to Talk About Race -  Ijeoma Oiuo womenpodcastersinsolidarity.com Ep 37: Generations Rising for Gun Safety with Gloria Pan Ep 07: Living Out Loud with Jenjii Hysten Ep 48: Lessons Learned Since Episode 24: Intersectionality and the Age of the New Heroine with Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin Moms Rising Ep 54: Superheroes, Fighting Patriarchy, and Courageously Defeating Gun Violence with Ladd Everitt One Pulse for America Masterminds and Wingmen - Rosalind Wiseman Ep 55: From Grief to Advocacy and a Circle of Mothers with Trayvon Martin’s Mother Sybrina Fulton The Trayvon Martin Foundation Circle of Mothers retreat Lucy McBath’s Story Mothers Against Police Brutality EP33: Beyond the Trauma: Legacy, Compassion and Change with Mothers Against Police Brutality Co-Founder Sara Mokuria EP27: On Living an E.P.I.C. Welcome to this special bonus episode of The Mother’s Quest Podcast, an interview I had on my friend Anne Ferguson’s podcast – MamaFuel. In this conversation, Anne turns the tables on me, as she asks how the epic guideposts showed up in my life. I’m delighted to share this episode with you and use this as an opportunity to share some announcements and invitations for getting involved with Mother’s Quest in the new year.    I hope you enjoy this conversation I had on Anne’s Podcast.  I’m excited to be back in a few short weeks with the start of a new incredible season of conversations! Until then, seize the day, love your people, and honor your gifts. Much appreciation,  P.S. Be sure to check out the announcements below, including the news that TODAY is the last day to contribute to the GoFundMe campaign to support Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton’s Circle of Mothers. Hope you’ll join us! Show Notes from MamaFuel the Podcast From Anne Ferguson: OOOOhhh am I excited to share THIS ONE! My guest this week is Julie Neale, founder of the amazing Mother’s Quest podcast, coach and mama of two exceptional and amazing boys. She’s a sparkling soul whose podcast gave me the courage to start hosting these MamaFuel conversations. Julie and I cover a lot of ground, from raising differently-wired kids to discovering your strengths and the support you have in community. I turn the tables on Julie and ask her to walk us through the guideposts that she follows in her own life and asks all of her guests to talk about – I really valued the insight into how Julie is living her E.P.I.C. life, sparked to the max with joy and delight at leading other mothers in discovering their version of epic living.   Julie spoke movingly about her interview with Sybrina Fulton, whose son Trayvon died as a result of racial profiling and gun violence. Julie and her community are supporting Sybrina’s incredibly important initiative “Circle of Mothers” which allows mothers who have lost their children to gun violence to gather and heal in community. If you’d like to help send some of these grieving mothers to Sybrina’s retreat, click this link: www.mothersquest.com/circleofmothers. Every contribution helps. Julie’s hoping that her community will be able to raise $15,000 and they’re two-thirds of the way there. I’d love our community to help her get to her goal. Today, on International Women’s Day, join us in contributing to the GoFundMe campaign to support an amazing woman, Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina MsCandy Fulton, and her Circle of Mothers healing retreat.  Already, it’s been amazing to see so many of you listen to the episode with Sybrina, contribute to the campaign, and invite others to do so too. With your support, we have raised over $10,000 of our $15,000 goal. I want to close the campaign out so that we can get the funds dispersed to the Trayvon Martin Foundation in time to help 10 mothers attend the healing retreat, for mothers who have lost a child to gun violence, this May. I hope you’ll listen if you haven’t and then take a look at the campaign and contribute in an amount meaningful to you. You can also help us spread the word. A "for purpose" venture to support mothers sparks a social solidarity movement. I met Julie Neale a couple years ago at Podcast Movement and we became instant friends. Julie pulled me on board for this ambitious heartfelt initiative she founded that year called Women Podcasters in Solidarity -- a collective of women podcasters who have made a pledge to build awareness and funds for social justice through their podcasting platforms. This is a twice-yearly, ongoing initiative with the first focus being on Anti-Racism and the Movement for Black Lives, and the second on Gun Safety with an Intersectional Lens (you can join now for the new season here). In this episode, we talk about social justice, gun violence, the origin story of Mother's Quest, how Julie produces her podcast, and finding joyful moments. A devoted mom on a mission to create a meaningful life for herself alongside and integrated with her role as mother, she supports other mom's to live what she calls an E.P.I.C. life. This conversation, rooted in how to bring more equanimity to our lives–finding our center of calm in the storm– Michelle draws on that training today as an advisor to organizations like Wisdom 2.0, in trainings with corporations like Disney and Google, for summits and workshops for parents that she organizes, and as a parent with her own two boys at home. An awareness of our impact in the day to day, through being a mindful parent, is something that Michelle embodies in her own parenting, in the appreciation she describes for her own mother, a single parent who adopted Michelle at the age of four months old, and in the ways that she makes mindfulness relatable and accessible to those she teaches. As you listen to this episode, I invite you to slow down by taking your own three breaths with us, tap into Michelle’s intention for finding “equanimity,” your center in the midst of chaos, and open yourself to Michelle’s wisdom. If you do, I’m certain you’ll find more of your calm in the storm and connect more fully to your own mindful parenting in a messy world.   You can learn more about Julie Neale and Mother’s Quest HERE.

Honored to share this special episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast featuring a conversation I had with author and coach Sage Hobbs as a guest on her show, Naked Conversations. I loved all the themes that we discussed and wanted to introduce more of you to Sage’s work, so I’m excited and appreciative that she gave me permission to share in this way. This is the last of a series of previously released conversations that I’m bringing to you this summer as I’ve focused on time with my children and transitioning them to school. In two weeks, I’ll be back with a brand new conversation, so make sure you’re subscribed to the podcast so that new episode comes straight to you. Sage and I cover so many topics in this episode, from personal challenges, to losing ourselves in motherhood, to the power of storytelling to feel our common humanity, to activism.  Underneath them all is this idea of defining courage for ourselves, exploring how we’ve been expanding our leadership in more courageous ways, and how this helps us pursue a fuller expression of who we are. The theme around courage is particularly resonant for me right now, as I’ve been stepping into new territory advocating for two police accountability bills being deliberated on in Sacramento, and after I helped to bring a powerful play called The (M)others, of mothers who have lost loved ones to police brutality, to Sacramento just last week. It’s also resonant because in their own ways, my children have been stepping into more courage. Starting a brand new school, especially when you’re differenty-wired, has required each of them to move out of their comfort zone and hold a positive picture of what’s possible for them. My oldest son Ryan and I went on another milestone hike together, where he re-committed to not letting fear stop him from living his YOLO life.  My youngest Jacob and I have been doing some affirmations together as part of our Miracle Morning Challenge happening in the facebook group right now, and he chose this affirmation from my list as his own, “Like an alchemist, I transform fear into curiosity and excitement.” I hope this episode gives you an opportunity to reflect on courage in your life, and to find some inspiration to transform any fear you or your children have at this time of year, into curiosity and excitement for yourselves. In This Episode We Talk About: Definitions of courage (one from my 14 year old!) What it means to live an E.P.I.C. life The moments that moved me to activism for police accountability Using growth mindset to explore challenging topics Leadership and permission My incredible story of two birds trapped in my house, and their timely lesson The Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative Resources Mentioned: Making the World a Better Place, One Leader at a Time with Rachel Rosen The Power of Healing in Community with Sera Snyder This is Not the Life I ordered Planting Seeds for Mother’s Quest Courageous Conversations about Race with Nicole Lee Intersectionality and the Age of the New Heroine with Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin Living Out Loud with Jenjii Hysten The blog post about the two birds Women Podcasters in Solidarity This Episode is Dedicated by: Rachel Rosen, a seasoned facilitator, leadership coach, inclusion strategist, and speaker, and the Founder of SPARK For Humanity, the interactive, community-building card game where everyone belongs. Support The (M)others and Two Key Police Accountability Bills In CA, lawmakers are deliberating right now on two key police accountability bills, SB-1421 and AB-931. In advance of that deliberation, I worked with Nikki Yeboah, the producer of a powerful play called (M)others, to bring forward the stories of those who’ve lost loved ones to police brutality to the Sacramento community. The showings were powerful and we’ve decided to bring the play to other cities in CA, those with the highest rates of police-involved shootings. Visit gofundme.com/slash take-this-play-to-senate to learn more about this effort and how you can support. We also need your support to call CA lawmakers and tell them to vote “yes” on these two bills. Ever wondered what it would be like to talk to someone who lives in the public eye? Today you've got ringside (or earbud-side) seats for my conversation with Kristina Kuzmić (also previously known as The Truth Bomb Mom). She's a truth-teller, a BS-buster, a mama of three and an internet sensation whose mission is to support mamas.  We talk about how important it is to change your perspective so you can improve your life; making the most of your circumstances, no matter how challenging; finding your passion by finding what you hate or makes you sad and fixing THAT; mama shaming (don't do it); how a supported mama is a better mama, and so much more. Kristina is refreshingly real, funny and totally transparent about her journey from deep depression and a life juggling two jobs while raising two kids alone on food stamps to the life she's now living and sharing for us all to see. So many parents find inspiration in Kristina's videos. If you're being introduced to Kristina for the first time, you're in for a treat. And if you've been following her for a while, buckle up... this is a great extra glimpse into someone so many of us have come to know and love. You can find Kristina:On her YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQA1BP64hgYBVi3cHcKyG7AOn her Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/KristinaKuzmic/I also mentioned another great podcast where Kristina chatted with Julie Neale of Mother's Quest. I loved hearing the stories of how her work has evolved, how she’s been shaped by motherhood, and how her own leadership keeps expanding as she expands Mother’s Quest. She’s also a community builder, dedicated to creating understanding and connections across differences. After a 20-year career as a leader in youth-serving nonprofit organizations, Julie turned her focus to coaching, training at the Coaches Training Institute, and facilitating a group process known as “reflection” for youth development professionals. She founded her for-purpose venture, Mother’s Quest, to provide inspiration, coaching and community for herself and other mothers who want to live what she calls an E.P.I.C. life. She hosts the Mother’s Quest Podcast, where she shares her own and other women’s stories about the transformative experience of parenting at mothersquest.com. In the fall of 2017, she launched the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative as a twice yearly effort to raise awareness and dollars for social justice issues through the power of podcasting. The first focus of the Initiative was on Anti-Racism and the Movement for Black Lives, with over a dozen women podcasters contributing. Julie recorded three powerful episodes on this topic, one with human rights attorney Nicole Lee, a second with “Rad Women” author and activist Kate Schatz, and a third with the co-founder of Mothers Against Police Brutality. Julie received her Masters in City Planning, Community Development from UC Berkeley and a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA, where she met her husband. Julie Neale is a total sweetheart.  She started her business and podcast Mother’s Quest in 2016 so she could talk about and support fellow moms who were looking for a more EPIC life...as she was on her own quest.     During this LIVE COACHING SESSION, we do a deep dive into how Julie can do a better job of monetizing her podcast and community.  She’s aware she’s at the beginning phases of this (at the time of this recording, she had just brought on her first paying private clients!) and is prepared for a year of experimentation, but feels like there’s something she’s not seeing.   So, I walk her through a few specific exercises that help her get clear about WHAT she has to offer that provides value to her mothers and HOW she can translate that into helping her create a financial goal she has for December 1, 2018!   PS: it’s worth noting here that Julie has one of the BEST and most TOUCHING ways she monetizes her podcast!!!  It’s called a dedication and it’s brilliant!   There are a few tools I’ve used for many of my private coaching clients that I discuss here with Julie and one of them is the Decision-Making Matrix, which I am making available to you, totally FREE.   Get the Decision Making Matrix here → http://bizwomenrock.com/decision   The final conclusion we come to is this: she already has everything she needs to GO! :)   Check out more about Julie here → http://mothersquest.com/ These LIVE COACHING SESSIONS are here so you can get deep insight into business issues, ideas and challenges that we all face as we create strategies, solutions and action plans that you can benefit from!  It's also a great way to see just how transformative it can be to allow another qualified person into your business so you can save time, money and energy that you would normally take figuring it out on your own!  We're in this together!   If you are interested in private coaching and strategy, then let’s talk!  You can set up a 15 Minute Match Session to see if we’re a perfect match! ;) http://bizwomenrock.com/workwithkatie/

Mother's Quest Podcast

Hello and welcome to Episode #28 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast that I’m bringing to you at the start of the Jewish New Year. The holiday kicks off a ten day period, known as the Days of Awe, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement.   This time of year, regardless of your religious faith, is a season of reflection and renewal, as our children get settled into a new school year and the leaves begin to change color. I wanted to take advantage of this time to turn inward and create an opportunity for change not only for myself but also for members of the Mother’s Quest Community. I decided to reach out to mindful mother, Edie Rafael Brotman, author of the book “Mussar Yoga,” to learn from her how she approaches self-improvement through blending the ancient Jewish practice of Mussar and the ancient Eastern practice of Yoga. Edie’s book was a trusted resource in a Mussar class I took a few years ago. I was enthralled by the process and know that the experience planted seeds for Mother’s Quest. So, when I reached out to Edie to see if she’d share her approach on the podcast and then lead a 5 day challenge in the Facebook Group and she said “yes,” I was thrilled.  Edie is a workplace consultant and coach for a business consulting firm called Rewire Inc that leverages emotional intelligence, mindfulness and communication. She has her PhD in Sociology and was an adjunct professor at UVA, Case Western Reserve University and Towson University. She’s also a highly trained yoga instructor, was named one of Baltimore’s favorite yoga teachers in Baltimore Magazine’s “Best of Baltimore” and co-founded Off the Grid Yoga and Camping Retreats. In this episode, Edie orients us to Mussar in which character traits, known in Hebrew as “middot,” are the centerpiece of the practice. Edie and I explore her E.P.I.C. life story, how she came to mindfulness and Mussar, and how reflecting on middot in her life has enriched her and her relationships. Edie also shares how her mother influenced her independence. And how her mother’s untimely death jump-started Edie’s journey to find Mussar as a bridge to connect Jewish spirituality and her love for physical activity. I appreciated so much about this conversation with Edie, especially the deep dive into the history of Mussar practice, and how she came to this connection between self-improvement, spirituality and the physical body.  I’m so excited to continue the exploration of all of these things, and hope you’ll decide to come along too as we challenge ourselves together during this season of reflection and renewal.  I’m Julie Neale and this is Mother’s Quest. This Week’s Challenge: Join us for Mussar Yoga for Moms: A Mother’s Quest 5 Day Challenge with Edie Raphael Brotman using ancient practices to live more E.P.I.C. lives at the Mother’s Quest Facebook Group. Listen to the episode and then make sure to join the Mother’s Quest Facebook group where we will poll the community to choose the “middah” or character trait that we’ll use in our 5 day Mussar Yoga practice starting Monday, September 25th. We’ll also have a live Q & A in the Facebook Group with Edie to check in on the Challenge on Wednesday, September 27th at 11 am PST. Topics discussed in this episode: Why the fall is the perfect time to undertake a Mussar Yoga Challenge How I first learned about Edie and her Mussar Yoga Book The path of renewal Edie’s mother took in her career, how that impacted her, and how her mother’s passing brought her to Mussar The power of mindfulness and daily meditation to become more conscious and aware of emotions as they arise Mussar as a way of rewiring your brain so it is in alignment with universal precepts The origins of Mussar and the people who pioneered the teachings The traditional way to practice Mussar, utilizing self-reflection on one character trait at a time on a continuum, and how Edie blends it powerfully with Yoga The connection between body and spiritual growth Resources mentioned in this episode: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur – Jewish new year holidays Mussar Yoga: Blending an Ancient Jewish Spiritual Practice with Yoga to Transform Body and Soul What is Mussar? We all have money mindset issues that we are consistently working to improve, yes, even me. In my latest challenge, I helped others to identify their mindset issues and work through them - this is what we found out and how you can work through your mindset blocks too. IN THIS EPISODE 0:27 I'm going to give feedback from the recent Money Mindset challenge we just completed in the Profit Party Facebook group. We switch this up depending on what people need help with, whether it's goals, the way we think about money, the way we step out and go into the next step in business. Well, that's my jam and that's what I love to help you figure out and that's what we did last week. When we got to the point where we needed to take action and implement, that's the hardest part. When it comes to implementation, we did a little bit of goal setting, looked at what's not serving us and something that doesn't require a lot of actions. 2:14 As soon as you take a step out of your comfort zone, it's like the life jacket comes off and you're swimming out in the middle of the ocean. You start to question if people are going to judge you, is it safe out here? There are so many unknowns that start to trigger us and we start to get anxiety and fear and uncomfortableness. And we decide we need to make it better, get a little more practice or maybe it's simple things like wanting to redo a room like I wanted to do for a YouTube video. These things are excuses when I allowed myself to get in my own way because I was uncomfortable talking about the information for the video. 4:30 We let ourselves get in our own way because we are afraid of being rejected and less than enough or less than perfect. We're afraid that we'll not be received in a way that we want. And that's a scary thing. But we all know intellectually that that has to happen. We have to learn how to stretch ourselves if we want to grow in our business. Julie Neale said "we have to be stretched but not a strain." A stretch is uncomfortable but not painful. Learning to tell the difference between uncomfortableness and pain in business is really important. 5:56 How do you know what the next step is? Well, you can ask yourself a few questions. Feel free to put me on pause and grab a pen and paper. Take 15-minutes for each question. You can take a walk, a bubble bath, meditate, go reconnect with nature. Discover what you're feeling right now - when you think about taking the next step to grow your business and stretch yourself, how do you feel? What do you want to feel? This is about getting in tune with your desired results. It's not always a quantitative result but it's how you want to feel. A lot of times when my student or clients go through this, it's often fear or anxiety. What do you want to feel instead of negative feelings? There's no wrong answer here. What do you need to declutter or get rid of in order to feel that way? What words do you need to stop using? What thoughts do you need to stop allowing? What emotions do you need to declutter? There might be some actions here. It might mean boycotting a person or ignore your schedule so you can get your mojo back? We do a lot of work on this and this is where you flip your switch takes place. Do something. What is that action step? As little as it may be, identify it. Have an accountability partner or come over to the Profit Party Facebook group and tell us what it is. You'll see people step up to support you and tell you that you are not alone. Do the thing that scares you. Sit back and relax and let the magic happen. This is where you get to allow the prosperity and abundance happen. 10:57 If you're still hung up on the rejection part, what about it is tripping you up? Who are you afraid is going to reject you? Can you change that outcome to allow only those who will love you to be around you? Not everyone is going to love you. Think about your favorite music artist - does everyone love them? No. There are plenty of people who receive good and bad reviews and if you focus on the negative, then that's where you'll be and it will hold you back. But if you focus on where you're going, and that's where you're meant to be than you need to do it. Take one little baby step. If you start to make that shift of the fear of rejection. “We see things that are so big, they're so daunting, we say, ‘There's no way can change anything. Who am I to even try?' And with that mentality, it's not going to change.” ~Andrea Ranae Johnson You have more power than you think. This month, I made a commitment to join an initiative to build solidarity for social justice headed up by my new friend and colleague, Julie Neale, host of Mother's Quest podcast. It's called the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative and I had NO IDEA how I was going to approach the topics of social justice and racism on The Creative Impostor when I said “yes.” Almost immediately, Andrea Ranae Johnson's new program, Coaching as Activism, popped up in my Facebook feed (I swear they're spying on my real life conversations) and I knew I had to talk with her on the show. In this episode, Andrea Ranae is giving you some real strategies for how YOU can shift your awareness away from futility and overwhelm and toward acknowledging your power and learning how to use your power for good. If you think this topic sounds heavy, please don't skip it!!! One thing I love about Andrea Ranae is how she approaches both the inner work of self-help and the outer work of activism with positivity, hope and a down-to-earth perspective. And if you haven't already, check out Episode 045: Talking to strangers, where you'll hear how I met Julie and why I'm taking on a theme on the show that pushes me out of my comfort zone. Let's just say, it's part of my creative growing edge. “Parenting, art making, writing, teaching — generally how you show up in our everyday lives can be a form of activism… actively dismantling the things that don't serve us in society or in our communities and also creating and cultivating new ways of being or new systems, new structures that better serve the collective” ~Andrea Ranae Johnson  Connect with Andrea Ranae Andrea Ranae's website Andrea Ranae's Coaching as Activism programAndrea Ranae's Podcast: Liberty Twitter Instagram  Facebook   Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! Julie is on a mission to live a truly E.P.I.C. life and, through her example, inspire her children and other mothers to do the same. In this episode, Julie and I discuss: Mother’s Quest – what it is and why she created it The guide posts to live an E.P.I.C. life as a busy mom The biggest challenge Julie thinks women face The cost of not investing in yourself and your business And more… Connect with Julie Neale online: http://mothersquest.com I hope you enjoyed my conversation with Julie and that you heard something that resonated with you. I know that investing in yourself as a mom is a BIG challenge – especially if you’re not accustomed to doing things for yourself. I struggled with that for years. But like Julie said, think about the cost of not investing in yourself and how that will impact you and your children in the long run. Hopefully, that will help you start investing in yourself. I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments. You can post a comment below or you can email me directly at Erica@momswithdreams.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Next week is my final interview of the season! I’m going to miss hanging out with you every week, but I’m looking forward to taking a break. While the podcast is in off-season, be sure to check out your favorite episodes again – you might hear something that you didn’t hear the first time around. I’m always looking for suggestions as this show is about making sure that I’m providing value for you.
