We discuss "The Spirit of the Lord Is Upon Me," the recently released statement of the International Lutheran-Pentecostal Dialogue, following discussions that took place from 2016 to 2022. Full disclosure: Sarah worked as a consultant to the dialogue on behalf of the Institute for Ecumenical Research, an independent house of studies that delegates consultants to all the ecumenical dialogues of the Lutheran World Federation. Besides Sarah's offering of some insider illumination on the text, the two of us discuss what an ecumenical statement is, what it isn't, and how it can become fruitful across the church. Notes: 1. Today's reading, Luke 9:28-36, is for Transfiguration Sunday, February 27, 2022. The title of this podcast is “Divine Intervention.” God chose and sent Jesus to usher in the kingdom of God through his own death and resurrection. Which means that Jesus knew all about politics, wars, and violence. To navigate a way forward, Jesus relies on prayer, solitude, scriptures, old mentors, and new friends. I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide and encourage each one of us through whatever uncertainties and fears we may be facing. Please open your Bible to Luke 9:28-36. I want to begin, though, with a prayer for peace:Dear God, as we open your word today, fill us with your Spirit, so that we can receive your instruction and do as you command. Forgive our warring ways, O God, and lead us in the ways that lead to peace in our hearts and in our world. Amen.Luke 9:[22-27]28-36[And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”]28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.Links:And with our prayers, we work for justice and peace everywhere. The Lutheran Church has agencies around the world, including Ukraine. I've included links to a couple of good humanitarian organizations here: Lutheran World Relief and the Lutheran World Federation. Listen to Jesus. Grieve the suffering in our world. And don't forget to pray.Support the show (https://secure.myvanco.com/YKER/home)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityWhat does the Catholic church teach when it comes to the topic of Justification? If you're familiar with a bit of church history, you know that justification, and specifically the doctrine of justification by faith alone, sola fide, was at the heart of the Reformation. Churches have split, anathemas have been pronounced, and no small amount of ink has been shed on the topic of Justification. Since the Second Vatican Council, Protestants and Catholics have been participating in dialogues to see if perhaps they can come together on this doctrine. Most famously, in 1999 the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification was signed between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation. However, despite this progress, Catholics and Protestants remain divided, and many Protestants wonder what it is that Catholics teach about Justification. Do Catholics believe that we're justified by works? Can Catholics agree to the doctrine of justification by faith alone and what does all this talk about "merit" mean? In this interview, we tackle these questions and more as Jimmy Akin carefully guides us through a Catholic understanding of the doctrine of Justification. Jimmy Akin is a Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers. My guest this week is Árni Svanur Daníelsson who is the Head of Communication for the Lutheran World Federation. We learn that Árni used to work in a video rental shop and became acquainted with film history. He went on to study theology at university and was involved in a theology and film group Deus ex Cinema. We talk about the theology and film field and the possibilities that online communication have brought about, including podcasts which are allowing people to be creative. Árni was born in Iceland in 1973, he grew up in a small family and he remembers growing up around a big forest. He talks about why The Empire Strikes Back, which he saw at the cinema three times, is such a key memory for him. We also learn about Árni's musical influences and how music has been a way for him to connect with his children. Árni talks about doing his degree in Iceland and his research on the way pastors are represented in film, and he discusses how film is a good way of understanding and of critique. We discover that in 2008 he was ordained as the first online pastor of the Church of Iceland, and we move on to talk about the impact of lockdown on ministry and we discover what his biggest hopes are once lockdown ends. At the end of the interview, we learn that Árni's memories are mainly positive and we talk about the role of grief and how our perceptions of grief may be reframed later in life. We discover that his younger self wouldn't have been able to imagine what he is doing now and Árni reveals why he reflects with gratitude on his past. An interview with Prof. Michael Reeves, President and Professor of Theology at Union School of Theology, UK. Author of books such as The Unquenchable Flame. Discovering the Heart of the Reformation (2010) and (with Tim Chester), Why The Reformation Still Matters (2016).On October 31, 1999, the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation signed ‘The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification' (JDDJ), claiming that they were ‘now able to articulate a common understanding of our justification by God's grace through faith in Christ.' This has led many since to think that the fundamental theological differences of the Reformation have now been resolved, and that there remains little or nothing of real theological substance to prevent evangelical-Catholic unity. Professor Mark Noll, for instance, boldly declared,If it is true, as once was repeated frequently by Protestants conscious of their anchorage in Martin Luther or John Calvin that iustificatio articulus stantis vel cadentis ecclesiae (justification is the article on which the church stands or falls), then the Reformation is over.Is the Reformation indeed, over? Elected as the ELCA's fourth presiding bishop at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton earned a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School and a Bachelor of Music Education from the College of Wooster. Ordained in 1981, Eaton served three congregations in Ohio before being elected bishop of the ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod in 2006 and re-elected in May 2013. Eaton's four emphases for the ELCA are: We are church. We are Lutheran. We are church together. We are church for the sake of the world. These four emphases are fundamental to identifying who the ELCA is. In 2015, under Eaton's leadership, the ELCA underwent an extensive vision process to help this church journey faithfully and effectively together in the years ahead. The process resulted in Future Directions 2025, a strategic framework that serves shared leadership across the ELCA to realize common aspirations and better face the challenges of this church. In addition, with Eaton's guidance, the ELCA launched Bishop Eaton's Leadership Initiative, which encourages all ELCA members to seek out and inspire gifted people in our congregations and communities to consider a call to the ministry of the gospel. Eaton also called together a task force in 2016 to draft a policy statement for inter-religious relations in the ELCA. As the chief ecumenical officer of the ELCA, she represents this church in a wide range of ecumenical and interfaith settings. She is the vice president for North America on the Council of The Lutheran World Federation and serves on the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA Governing Board and Development Committee, and Religions for Peace USA Council of Presidents. As presiding bishop, Eaton travels extensively, representing the ELCA in a variety of capacities. This has included a visit to a Syrian refugee camp, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with Lutherans from around the world in Namibia and participating in an ecumenical service commemorating the Reformation in the Lund, Sweden, cathedral with Pope Francis. Eaton's husband is the Rev. T. Conrad Selnick, an Episcopal priest. They are parents of two adult children, Rebeckah and Susannah. Before joining the seminary’s faculty, Dr. Westhelle was on the faculty of Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary and Escola Superior de Teologia, Brazil. He was visiting professor at the University of Natal, South Africa, and the University of Aarhus, Denmark.Dr. Westhelle began his theological career as a journalist for the national church newspaper in São Leopoldo, RS, Brazil (1975-76) . Ordained in 1988, he served for four years as parish pastor of a 13-point parish in Paróquia Evangélica de Matelândia, PR, Brazil. At that time he also was the Coordinator of the Ecumenical Commission on Land in Paraná where he was an enabler and a companion with those struggling for land and justice. In 1989 Westhelle was invited to be a member of the faculty of Escola Superior de Teologia, São Leopoldo as professor of systematic theology and ethics, where he continued until he joined the Lutheran School of Theology in 1993.Dr. Westhelle studied Sociology at UNISINOS, Brazil, and earned the B.Th in 1977 from Faculdade de Teologia da IECLB, Brazil. He received the Th.M and Ph.D. degrees from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, in 1984. While his Th.M exams were on “Luther’s Doctrine of the Two Kingdoms and the Theology of Juan Luis Segundo,” and his doctoral dissertation title is “Religion and Representation: A Study of Hegel’s Critical Theories of Vorstellungand their Relevance for Hegelianism and Theology.” Westhelle has studied at the University of Chicago, Chicago Theological Seminary and Jesuit School of Theology, and did post-doctoral work at the University of Tübingen in 1995.A prolific writer and editor, with more than 130 scholarly publications, Westhelle is author or co-editor of nine books. He has written widely on the theology of Luther, and on the themes of Liberation, Creation, the Apocalyptic and Eschatology. The cross-theme, in particular, theologia crucis, defines who Westhelle is as a theologian. For him the theology of the cross is not a doctrine but that which you live by, a usus passionis. It is the cross-ing that arrests his attention and through his writings he tries to find categories to name and cross differences without suppressing them but rather lifting them up: liminality, chora, stasis, hybridity, adjacency, eschata, margin, borderline, chiaroscuro, etc. He strives to convey that the gospel is the transgression of “legal” domains, semantic fields with their protocols, or régimes of truth, while being neither and both the abolition and the completion of the law. He is adept in bringing together theology and literature. Another area of interest on which Westhelle has written and lectured is location or spaces, which for him are wrappings of the divine.Westhelle is a highly-sought speaker throughout academic circles and the Church. From 1990-97 he was an advisor to the Executive Council of the Lutheran World Federation and a member of the Program Committee for Theology and Studies of the Lutheran World Federation. Until 2001, he was a member of the Core Group of the LWF/DTS project on “Communion, Community, and Society”. Westhelle has served as a member of the Continuation Committee of the International Congress for Luther Research. He currently serves on the editorial council of Dialog, Lutheran Quarterly, International Editorial Council of Margens: Revista Brasiliera de Estudos sobre Pós-modernidade, Estudos Teológicos (EST-Brazil), Cuadernos de Teología (ISEDET-Argentina), Numen: Revista de Estudos e Pesquisa da Religião (UFJDF, Brazil), Bulletin of Contextual Theology, South Africa, Bibliografia Bíblica Latino-Americana (São Paulo, Brazil).
