The podcast team recently took a road trip to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY to meet with Ashley Helmholdt, Extension Associate, Cornell Garden-Based Learning, School of Integrative Plant Science Horticulture. With a passionate interest in garden-based learning, Ashley manages the New York State Master Gardener Volunteer and Seed to Supper programs as well as professional development for Cornell Cooperative Extension educators. She shares a bit of the history of the MGV program which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. She's heavily involved in the continual enhancements to the program and shares her enthusiasm for what's to come. She also talks extensively about the Seed to Supper program, a six-session series, which helps new vegetable gardeners get started. Vegetable Varieties for New York State is also under her purview which is an excellent resource to help gardeners select varieties that will grow well in New York soils and climate. The Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer network is also working to strengthen understanding and inspire us to take action in our gardens and communities that will help address the global crisis of climate change. Supporting this effort, a curriculum is available for gardeners, homeowners, educators, volunteers, teachers, students, and anyone interested in exploring how we might examine our gardening practice through the lens of climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Master Gardener Volunteer Program is a nationwide educational program, and in New York State, consists of a corps of volunteers who are trained by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the science and art of gardening. Master Gardener Volunteers are volunteers from the community who enjoy gardening and use their horticultural skills and expertise to educate others. In return for their training, Master Gardener Volunteers donate their time teaching the community about their gardening and the environment. Master Gardener Volunteer activities might include offering lectures and workshops at libraries, schools and in the community, answering horticultural inquiries, creating and staffing horticultural booths at shows and fairs, providing advice to the public at farmer's markets, garden centers and other venues, and Increasing awareness of integrated pest management, water quality and conservation and other environmental issues. Being a Master Gardener Volunteer is both a rewarding and gratifying experience. Master Gardeners add beauty and knowledge to the many lives they touch. In this episode, Rosemary Armao joins the Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley podcast with a perspective on the Master Gardener Volunteer program. As a recent graduate of the training process in Albany County, she provides a candid discussion about the training process as well as what she's learned being a Master Gardener. Rosemary Armao, a native of Albany, is an adjunct professor of journalism at UAlbany. She has worked as a reporter and editor at various wire services and newspapers. She has trained journalists and worked on media development projects throughout Eastern Europe and Africa. She is also a former executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors and former president of the Journalism and Women Symposium. She also has her own podcast, Armao on the Brink, which is focused on a discussion of the biggest stories across the globe that are bring society and culture to the brink of an abyss. As a relatively new Master Gardener, her MGV perspective might be of interest to anyone considering becoming one. She talks about the rigors and rewards of the program during the training as well as ‘post-graduation'. Because she took the classes during the pandemic, the process was modified due to the inability to meet in person during that time period. She discusses some of the key things she learned as a result of the training which includes leveraging the experience of other gardeners, learning from web sites of land grant universities, reading seed catalogues, and the value of hands-on experience. Rosemary helps to demystify the process of becoming an MGV and as well as what's involved with volunteering with Cornell Cooperative Extension. Les poudres de lait, fléau des producteurs laitiers en Afrique de l'Ouest. Les importations de ces mélanges depuis l'Europe sont en augmentation ces dernières années. Conséquence d'une production locale insuffisante, ces poudres de lait moins chère et plus compétitive représentent un frein au développement des filières laitières ouest-africaines. La concurrence est rude et même faussée tant les différents acteurs ne jouent pas à armes égales. Les mélanges de lait écrémé et de matières grasses végétales dites MGV continuent d'affluer sur le marché ouest-africain. Peu taxés, venant d'Irlande majoritairement, des Pays-Bas, ou de France, ils représentent plus de la moitié des importations de produits laitiers. Stéven Le Faou est consultant au bureau d'étude Jokoo — spécialiste de l'interdépendance commerciale entre l'Afrique et l'Europe : « En Europe, la première contrainte est que l'on consomme tout basiquement plus de matière grasse que de matière protéique du lait, on a des excédents. Notre crainte aujourd'hui, c'est que ces poudres MGV soient le moyen de recycler ces excédents. Beaucoup de filières sont guidées par le coût, et ça aboutit à ce type de produit qui peuvent assembler les ingrédients les moins chers pour arriver à un équivalent du lait entier, qui est la moitié du prix du lait entier. »Une différence floue avec le lait localAu Burkina, le litre de lait reconstitué à partir de cette poudre coûte environ 300 francs CFA. Deux fois moins qu'un litre de lait local. D'autant plus pénalisant que l'étiquetage reste flou et défaillant, explique Ibrahim Diallo, président de l'Union nationale des minilaiteries et producteurs de lait local dans le pays : « Cette concurrence a tiré la production locale vers le bas. Nous partageons le même marché. Il y a même des industries au Burkina qui utilisent cette poudre de lait, qui sont assimilées à des industries qui font du lait local. Le consommateur ne fait pas la différence en le produit lait en poudre MGV et le lait local. »À écouter aussiLe marché du lait en pleine restructurationLes États s'engagent à travers l'Offensive Lait menée par la Cédéao depuis 2017. La Côte d'Ivoire souhaite qu'un quart des besoins en lait soit assuré par la production locale d'ici à 2030. Favoriser la production de lait localDes investissements majeurs sont également menés au Nigeria. Selon Benoit Rouyer, économiste français au Centre national interprofessionnel de l'économie laitière. Le monde entier a un intérêt à ce que le développement des filières laitières africaines réussisse : « On va avoir besoin de tout le monde pour nourrir le monde dans les années à venir. En fait, les projections de la FAO (Organisation des Nations unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture) et de l'OCDE (Organisation de Coopération et de Développement Économiques), c'est une croissance de la consommation de 1,8 % par an de lait. Ce lait-là, on ne va pas le produire, notamment en Europe, parce qu'on a des facteurs limitants avec les ressources humaines qui ne sont pas là, donc il est important que la production laitière se développe dans un certain nombre de zones traditionnellement importatrices comme l'Afrique de l'Ouest. »Le lait africain doit gagner en compétitivité. FIT builds on Motivational interviewing, but adds the power of our imagination. Dé terugkerende vraag als mensen motiverende gespreksvoering inzetten - of als zij zélf duurzaam willen veranderen – is: hoe houd ik mijn motivatie vast? Dit fenomeen herken je zelf vast ook: als je onlangs een of andere 'wake up call' hebt gehad, dan lukt het vaak wel om even je gedrag te veranderen in een gezonde richting. Maar dit gedrag vásthouden blijkt vaak de grote uitdaging.En wat nu als ik je vertel dat de wetenschap ook daar iets op gevonden heeft. Het is zelfs iets wat gratis is, géén bijwerkingen heeft, en wat (bijna) iedereen kan leren. Ik heb het over de kracht van je verbeelding. Er is namelijk een nieuwe methode – Functional Imagery Training (FIT) genaamd – die voortbouwt op motiverende gesprekvoering, maar die het effect daarvan 5 x zo sterk maakt. Ja, dat lees je goed. Mensen die deze interventie ontvingen vielen na verloop van tijd 5 x zo veel af, als mensen die enkel MGV plus leefstijl-advies ontvingen. Hier lees je meer over dat onderzoek. En het belangrijkste werkzame element van FIT lijkt te zijn: het toevoegen van de verbeeldingskracht. Door mensen zich heel levendig voor te laten stellen hoe groot de prijs zou zijn van het voortzetten van ongezond gedrag, maar óók de enorme beloning van het veranderen hiervan neemt de kracht van MGV enorm toe. En ook bij het omgaan met lastige momenten en het implementeren van de verandering kan de verbeeldingskracht sterk bijdragen. De grap is natuurlijk dat topsporters dit principe al heel lang kennen en toepassen, dus zo gek is het niet. Eneh... was het niet Einstein die al zei dat verbeelding belangrijker is dan kennis? De jonge Britse psychologe Linda Solbrig promoveerde op FIT bij gewichtsverlies en noemt het ‘MI on steroids'. En voor je denkt – weer een hype? – ook hier zit al weer 20 jaar wetenschappelijk onderzoek achter. En waar FIT nu nog vooral bij leefstijlverandering wordt ingezet, voorzien kenners een nog veel bredere toepassing in de toekomst, zoals in het onderwijs, bedrijfsleven, human performance en oh ja, misschien zelfs bij het redden van onze planeet…

Today, we are going deeper with a company called MissionGo who is using drones to do a variety of things from infrastructure inspections to medical and commercial cargo. Our guests are MissionGo President Chris Corgnati and Director of Flight Operations Ryan Henderson.Last time on episode 4 we discussed drone soccer, and the regulatory challenges that this quickly growing industry faces as it takes on autonomous flight, air taxi services and more, so if you want a great introduction on drones go check that out.Infrastructure inspections are certainly important, and I know a lot of companies are out there doing that and it is where many of them are able to make money today, but I'm really excited about the medical applications. In April 2019, MissionGo did the first-ever drone delivery of an organ transplant, and since then they have delivered everything from pizza, to blood, and life-saving medication. We should probably say the pizza and organs are separate delivery packages right, but in all seriousness, this is such a cool and important use case that I think we're going to see more and more.Key Takeaways: Dr. Joe Scalea, a MissionGo cofounder and renowned transplant surgeon, conceived the idea to use drones for organ and medical transplant resulting in the first successful organ transplant in 2019, and the founding of MissionGo. Why Drones? Drones are best for dull, dangerous, or dirty work. They also reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution when compared to larger, combustion engine aircraft. MGV-100 is MissionGo's flagship single rotor drone. The design lends itself to stability and reliability, which are critical for the sensitive medical loads that MissionGo transports. The battery architecture provides redundancy in the case if one of the motors or batteries fails in-flight. It is usually safer and more efficient to fly the drones autonomously, rather than manually. Infrastructure surveying is currently how companies, including MissionGo, are able to generate the majority of their revenue while they work on other delivery programs that have yet to reach their full-scale potential. MissionGo completed the First successful organ delivery for transplant by an uncrewed aerial vehicle or UAV in 2019. The delivery took just 10 minutes, covering about 2.6 miles from one hospital to another. Time is of the essence in these critical medical operations, making it a great use case for drone delivery. MissionGo, MediGo and The Navajo Nation completed a series of flights in January 2022 using the MGV100 drone where they were able to deliver critical cargo like life-saving prescription medication, meal kits, and emergency supplies, even livestock medication to look at how drones could improve healthcare access in rural America. When transporting biohazardous cargo like blood or organs technologies like tamperproof packaging and identity verification can help make these deliveries safe and successful. We are just at the beginning at fully realizing and executing on the diverse applications of drone technology. There is already tremendous impact and results from the industry, and the future is bright. It had huge success all over the globe, and yet, there will always be moments in a start-up's story where the founder asks, 'is this still working for me?' Dé terugkerende vraag als mensen motiverende gespreksvoering inzetten - of als mensen zélf duurzaam willen veranderen – is: hoe houd ik mijn motivatie vast. Dit fenomeen herken je zelf vast ook: als je onlangs een wake up call hebt gehad (van het leven of in gesprek met een coach of zorgverlener) , dan lukt het vaak wel om even je gedrag te veranderen in een gezonde richting. Maar dit gedrag vásthouden blijkt vaak de grote uitdaging. En wat nu als ik je vertel dat de wetenschap ook daar iets op gevonden heeft. Het is zelfs iets wat gratis is, geen bijwerkingen heeft, en wat iedereen kan leren. Ik heb het over de kracht van je verbeelding. Er is namelijk een nieuwe methode – Functional Imagery Training (FIT) genaamd – die voortbouwt op motiverende gesprekvoering, maar die het effect daarvan 5 x zo sterk maakt. Ja, dat lees je goed. Mensen die deze interventie ontvingen vielen na verloop van tijd 5 x zo veel af, als mensen die enkel MGV plus leefstijl-advies ontvingen. Door mensen zich heel levendig voor te laten stellen hoe groot de prijs zal zijn van het voortzetten van ongezond gedrag, maar ook de enorme beloning van het veranderen hiervan neemt de kracht van MGV enorm toe. En ook bij het omgaan met lastige momenten en het implementeren van de verandering kan de verbeeldingskracht sterk bijdragen. De grap is natuurlijk dat topsporters dit principe al heel lang kennen en toepassen. Een van de mede ontwikkelaars van FIT, de Britse Linda Solbrig, noemt het ‘MI on stereoids'. En voor je denkt – weer een hype? – ook hier zit al weer 20 jaar wetenschappelijk onderzoek achter. En waar FIT nu nog vooral bij leefstijlverandering wordt ingezet, voorzien kenners een nog veel bredere toepassing in de toekomst, zoals in het onderwijs, bedrijfsleven, human performance en oh ja, misschien zelf het redden van onze planeet…

Low-power jet-ISM interaction in NGC 7319 revealed by JWST MIRI MRS by M. Pereira-Santaella et al. on Sunday 18 September We present JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of NGC7319, the largest galaxy in the Stephan's Quintet, observed as part of the Early Release Observations (ERO). NGC7319 hosts a type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a low-power radio jet (L_1.4GHz=3.3x10^22 W Hz^-1) with two asymmetric radio hotspots at 430 pc (N2) and 1.5 kpc (S2) projected distances from the unresolved radio core. The MRS data suggest that the molecular material in the disk of the galaxy decelerates the jet and causes this length asymmetry. We find enhanced emission from warm and hot H_2 (T_w=330+-40 K, T_h=900+-60 K) and ionized gas at the intersection between the jet axis and dust lanes in the disk. This emission is coincident with the radio hotspot N2, the hotspot closer to the core, suggesting that the jet-interstellar medium (ISM) interaction decelerates the jet. Conversely, the mid-infrared emission at the more distant hotspot is fainter, more highly ionized, and with lower H_2 excitation, suggesting a more diffuse atomic environment where the jet can progress to farther distances. At the N2 radio hotspot, the ionized gas mass (M_ion=(2.4-12)x10^5 Msun) is comparable to that of the warm H_2, but the former is more turbulent (sigma_ion~300 vs. sigma_H2~150 km/s), so the mechanical energy of the ionized gas is ~1.3-10 times higher. From these estimates, we find that only 0.3-1.5 kpc) high-ionization emission ([MgV], [NeVI], and [NeV]) close to the radio hotspots. This initial analysis of NGC7319 shows the potential of MIRI/MRS to investigate the AGN feedback mechanisms due to radio jets and their radiation field in the, often heavily dust-enshrouded, central regions of galaxies. The Aussie share market is set to start the week flat. As COVID-19 cases in NSW increase, many are questioning if Sydney's two week lockdown will be extended on Friday. What to watch today: The Trans -Tasman bubble will resume today. Residents from South Australia, ACT, Tasmania and Victoria will be allowed to travel to New Zealand, provided they have not visited a designated hotspot. In company news, Tabcorp (ASX:TAH) announced it is to demerge its Lotteries and Keno into an ASX listed business. The gambling industry has been successful amid the rise of lockdown leisure, which supports (ASX:TAH) shares. (ASX:TAH) shares are up 33% this year. Other gambling companies to watch include Aristocrat Leisure (ASX:ALL) and Jumbo Interactive (ASX:JIN). In economic news, the RBA are set to meet tomorrow. On Thursday, the US Fed are set to release their last meeting minutes. The iron ore price rose 0.3% to US$212.00. On Wall Street, BHP (ASX:BHP) and Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) traded higher. The Aussie listed stocks are expected to follow. The gold price rose 0.3% to US$1,787. The oil price traded at US$75.00, at its highest level since October 2018. The copper price rose 1%. Trading Ideas: Imdex (ASX:IMD) was reiterated as a Bell Potter BUY with a $2.35 target, implying 18% yearly upside. Transurban (ASX:TCR), Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) and Musgrave Minerals (ASX:MGV) are all giving off bullish charting signals according to Trading Central.
