(S5, EP 1) As we wrap up #AAPIMonth and begin #PrideMonth Longtime dancer, artist and model Kevin Stea kicks things off as my 1st guest for this Season 5's "Our Becoming: An Asian LGBTQ experience" on The Banh Mi Chronicles Podcast. This interview was recorded in mid March right after the Atlanta shooting. Kevin is of biracial, mixed Chinese American descent who danced for Madonna's worldwide hit tour, "The Blond Ambition" in 1990. He would go on to perform as an actor, model, and choreographed for many other icons, and still dancing today. We talked about the disconnect he felt in not being able to connect to his Chinese heritage, and his father, also of Chinese descent, who was largely absent during his childhood. We discussed about what it meant being queer during the volatile AIDS / HIV crisis during the 80s and early 90s which wreaked havoc on the LGBTQ commmunity. I got Kevin to talk about his experience working with some of the biggest icons as a dancer / choreographer, and being in a white-led entertainment industry that was not very welcoming to Asian Americans. Soon after, he was working with Gloria Estefan, Prince, and Michael Jackson, among others, as associate choreographer/dancer, and won the Grand Prize on the television show “Star Search.” He modeled for major designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Tommy Hilfiger, Romeo Gigli and Exté, and worked with celebrity photographers David Lachapelle, Matthew Rolston, Peggy Sirota, Herb Ritts and Santo D'Orazio, at a time when Asians were not accepted in the industry. He has choreographed for other artists such as Britney Spears, Cher, David Bowie, Rihanna, Beyonce, Ricky Martin, among others. On Monday, the singer-songwriter Taylor Swift endorsed two Democrats for the US mid-term elections, prompting Mr Trump to tell reporters that he likes "Taylor's music about 25% less now". Swift's comments appear to have contributed to a spike in online voter registrations, especially among young people, according to the voter registration site Vote.org. However, Vote.org said it was not possible to measure the direct impact of Swift's decision to wade into politics - taking into account looming registration deadlines in a number of states and other factors. Swift's remarks once again puts her at odds with West, with whom she has had an on-off public feud since he interrupted her acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards. In September, West, who is married to Kim Kardashian, wore a hat with Donald Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again" during his performance of Ghost Town on the US comedy show Saturday Night Live. He ended his segment by delivering an impromptu off-air speech praising the president, posted online by members of the audience. "So many times I talk to a white person and [they] say: 'How could you like Trump, he's racist?'" he said. "Well, if I was concerned about racism I would've moved out of America a long time ago." Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., is facing scrutiny from a conservative watchdog group for possibly violating fundraising rules in a slate mailer, with the group requesting that Waters’ campaign committee be audited as a result. The Federal Election Commission received a complaint Monday from the National Legal and Policy Center claiming that Waters, her campaign, and a pro-charter school group called Families and Teachers for Antonio Villaraigosa violated federal election law. The complaint claims the group paid $25,000 for Villaraigosa to be featured in the Waters mailer when he was running for governor in the Democratic primary earlier this year. Although candidates can pay a fee to be included in slate mailers, it’s illegal for outside groups such as Families and Teachers for Antonio Villaraigosa to make such a payment.
On today's episode I talk to Wayne White. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Wayne is an artist, art director, illustrator, puppeteer, and much, much more. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Wayne traveled to New York City where he worked as an illustrator for the East Village Eye, New York Times, Raw Magazine, and the Village Voice. In 1986, Wayne became a designer for the hit television show Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and his work was awarded with three Emmys. After traveling to Los Angeles, Wayne continued to work in television and designed sets and characters for shows such as Shining Time Station, Beakman’s World, Riders In The Sky, and Bill & Willis. He also worked in the music video industry, winning Billboard and MTV Music Video Awards as an art director for seminal music videos including The Smashing Pumpkins' 'Tonight, Tonight' and Peter Gabriel's 'Big Time.' More recently, Wayne has had great success as a fine artist and has created paintings and public works that have been shown all over the world, and in 2009, Wayne's life and career were chronicled in an incredible 382-page monograph, edited by Todd Oldham. Walter Partos is the owner of Partos Company which represents cinematographers, costume designers, production designers, producers and editors. Their artists have won virtually every award in the entertainment industry including Oscars, Spirits Awards, Cannes Gold Lions, Emmys, BAFTAs and MTV Music Video Awards. Walter started his career as a literary agent and his clients included Quentin Tarantino, Mardik Martin (Raging Bull, Mean Streets), Chris DeVore (Elephant Man), Rolf De Heir (Bad Boy Bubby). After literary representation, the next step in his career was representing visual artists. One of the first visual artists he represented was cinematographer Jordan Croenenweth who taught him the importance of listening. Now the company represents a large number of cinematographers including a former podcast guest Oren Soffer. This episode is unique in that instead of a more chronological discussion of Walter's career we dive deep into the intricacies of being an agent with the hour long discussion taking on a more Q&A form about the craft with Walter extolling advice about a number of topics including: how to get an agent, what an agent can do for you, common misconceptions about agents, how to be a professional artist… We recorded this conversation over the course of a few discussions due to technical reasons. With that in mind, the conversation touches upon the same topics in a few different ways but it all felt helpful so the various conversations have been combined into one episode.
