And how much do you know about Mary Lasker and her contributions to cancer research? Hello, hello, and welcome back to Write Medicine, the podcast that explores best practices in creating continuing education content for health professionals. I'm your host, Alex Howson, and in today's episode, we explore a story that shaped the field of medicine and cancer research in particular. My guest is Judy Pearson, an author, cancer survivor, and catalyst for change who shares her extensive research on Mary Lasker, a woman whose name may not be widely known, but whose impact on cancer research and treatment is immeasurable.  We explore how Mary's partnership with her husband Albert played a pivotal role in transforming the American Society for the Control of Cancer into what is now known as the American Cancer Society. Mary believed in the power of research and was determined to use her life, her money, and her social connections to make a difference and was dedicated to education, civic-mindedness, and relentlessly pursuing change, even when it meant challenging the status quo.  So grab your pens and notebooks, as Judy Pearson takes us on a journey through the extraordinary life of Mary Lasker, a fascinating woman who shaped the world of medicine, right here on Write Medicine. Quantum Spirituality, Science, Gnostic Mysticism, and Connecting with Source Consciousness with Peter Canova Foreword by James Redfield, author of The Celestine Prophecy Bio: Peter Canova is a multi-award winning author, speaker, and inspirational visionary. His book, Pope Annalisa has won ten national and international book awards and his series, The First Souls Trilogy has captured twenty-five awards including the indie Next Generation best book series. The theme underlying Peter's body of work is that all people have the ability to transcend their ordinary consciousness and experience information from a higher source within themselves. Peter conducted thirty-five years of research into ancient spiritual texts, quantum physics, and psychology to understand the startling psychic experiences that altered his life. He learned that modern science is only rediscovering the astonishing teachings of ancient spiritual traditions concerning the creation and the true nature of physical reality. Peter has been the subject of numerous radio and TV interviews and has spoken at a variety of high profile events including the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment where he was the kick-off presenter for a roster of speakers including Eckhart Tolle, Jim Carrey, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Jean Houston, Edward James Olmos, and Fred Alan Wolf. He has been a featured speaker at the Conscious Living Expo, the New Living Expo, the Unity Church National Convention, and the Centers for Spiritual Living National Convention. Peter's novel, Pope Annalisa (popeannalisa.com), is the first book in a trilogy called The First Souls. Pope Annalisa is a spiritual thriller about an African nun who becomes the first female pope. It has won ten prestigious awards including the Nautilus Gold Award for visionary fiction formerly bestowed on such authors as Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, and the Dalai Lama. Choosing to write a novel rather than a scholarly or non-fiction work was a conscious choice to better connect with his readers and communicate profound information. Peter has said, “No work can be personally transformative unless it engages both the heart and the mind of the viewer. To be touched intellectually is to be affected; to be touched emotionally is to be moved. To be touched by both is to be raised to a new perception of being. Helping people achieve that is my goal in life.” Peter may be reached through his PR agent, Steve Allen Media (Tel: 661 255-8283) or by email media@steveallen.net   https://popeannalisa.com/ https://www.petercanova.com/ Listen to Peter's Radio Show/Podcast “Quantum Spirituality” on Dreamvisions 7 Radio Network Tuesdays 10am & 10pmET See here: https://dreamvisions7radio.com/quantum-spirituality-with-peter-canova/ Learn more about Dr. Bernie here:  http://berniesiegelmd.com/

When I show you all my ugliness and all of my past and everything you didn't cause, but now you're gonna be dealing with…can you handle all of that?” Josh Shipp wants to pass that experience on to as many others as he can, so those adults can care for the kids in the way he needed: “Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story.” This week, we talk to Josh Shipp about how growing up in foster homes and being a counterphobic six has impacted his current work as a global youth empowerment expert.  Josh Shipp is an author & youth advocate, and television producer of a documentary TV series on A&E that follows his groundbreaking work with youth and families. “We can do extraordinary things when we lead with love,” Barbara Becker reminds us in her debut memoir Heartwood. When her earliest childhood friend is diagnosed with a terminal illness, Becker sets off on a quest to immerse herself in what it means to be mortal. Can we live our lives more fully knowing some day we will die? With a keen eye towards that which makes life worth living, Barbara Becker―a perpetual seeker, a mom, and an interfaith leader―recounts stories where life and death intersect in unexpected ways. She volunteers on a hospice floor, becomes an eager student of the many ways people find meaning at the end of life, and accompanies her parents in their final days. Becker inspires readers to live with the end in mind and proves that turning toward loss rather than away from it is the only true way to live life to its fullest. Just as with the heartwood of a tree―the central core that is no longer alive yet supports the newer growth rings―the dead become an enduring source of strength to the living. With life-affirming prose, Becker helps us see that that grief is not a problem to be solved, but rather a sacred invitation―an opportunity to let go into something even greater…a love that will inform all the days of our lives. In her 2022 Nautilus Gold Award-winning memoir, Becker, an ordained interfaith chaplain, sets off on a quest to find the answer to the question: can we live our lives more fully knowing someday we will die?

Let Cancer Transform Your Life~   In this interview, Sophie Sabbage shares how cancer is transforming her life. Sophie’s terminal cancer diagnosis was a lifeshock and it also awakened her to her most authentic, loving, and creative self. Sophie is living with terminal lung cancer despite being given a few months to live over five and a half years ago. Upon hearing her diagnosis, Sophie vowed not to be a victim and took charge of her treatment. Furthermore, Sophie shares how she found the unlikely gifts of cancer and how the illness is transforming her life. In addition, we talk about lifeshocks, those unwanted and unexpected moments in our lives, and how they can awaken us to our most authentic, loving, and creative selves.    Sophie is the author of two Sunday Times bestsellers: The Cancer Whisperer, translated into twelve languages, and Lifeshocks, 2018 winner of the international Nautilus Gold Award for personal growth books. As a transformation specialist, Sophie equips people to engage powerfully with challenging lifeshocks. Also, she has nearly thirty years experience as both a business consultant and as a Senior Trainer with the More To Life Foundation. In addition, Sophie is a professional speaker.     In this episode, Sophie talks about the impact of fear on wellbeing and even on medical outcomes. Her experience of living with cancer, adversity, uncertainty, and facing death  is very relevant and useful to the current coronavirus situation. Finally, Sophie says “I have cancer, it does not have me.”    Episode Highlights:   First, Emily introduces her guest, Sophie Sabbage. Then, Sophie shares how she learned about her cancer. She tells us she pushed her doctors for scans.  After that, Sophie talks about her daughter who recently turned 10.   Sophie explains lifeshocks, those unwanted moments in time. She tells us that she is fortunate to have a toolkit for dealing with lifeshocks.   Next, Sophie shares that she was dying of fear. In other words, when the doctor told her she was going to die, she started dying. Furthermore, Sophie says she needed to get through fear to have a chance to stay alive. Sohpie discusses the symptoms she experienced before her cancer diagnosis.  She listened to her intuition and pressed the doctor for scans that saved her life.  Sophie shares that she wrote her book, The Cancer Whisperer, to help patients navigate the psychological and emotional territory of a cancer diagnosis. No one offered Sophie emotional support and she describes what it was like to sit in oncology ward waiting for her cancer treatment. She then describes the moment that led her to write the book. Sophie explains, “If we don’t take hold of our fear as patients, our fear will take care of us and make the decisions and run the show.”  She stresses the importance of not handing all of the power to the doctor. Then Sophie explains her darkest hour, when she learned she had multiple brain tumors. After that, she talks about the ways in which she educated herself and took charge of her treatment.  Sophie says the primary reason she’s still alive is the medical treatments she received. After that, Sophie talks about how she took control of her appointments, even delaying a treatment so she could see her daughter’s nativity play.  In other words, she says, “If I fit my life into cancer, I’m going to die soon in spirit if not in body. But if I fit cancer inside my life, I’m more likely to have a life.” Next, Sophie shares how the late Dr. K. Bradford Brown taught her to find unlikely gifts in unwanted happenings. After that, she explains why she wrote her second book: Lifeshocks And How to Love Them. Dr. K. Bradford Brown taught Sophie his mantra: There is no event by which and through which life its self is not trying to awaken you to your most authentic, loving, and creative self. There is no event that is not speaking to you. Lifeshocks are collision points between what we expect and how it really is. In other words, we run into reality and think it should be different. But actually these moments challenge our expectations, our conditioning, our belief in very profound ways. Sophie says “Sometimes we rise to our destinys when we’re brought to our knees.”  Next Sophie and Emily discuss the lifeshock of the COVID-19 crisis and how  we’re being humbled and reminded of what really matters. Sophie explains that if she held onto anything that said her life doesn’t matter she wouldn’t have been able to put energy into herself to stay alive. According to Sophie, the only way out of fear is through it - no way over or around it. Sophie shares that there is pain and suffering and illness in life but we make it worse because of how we interpret it as happening. In other words, fear is self generated by what we think. Sophie can control the quality of her life as long as there is breath in her body. Some people are free of cancer but not really free mentally.   Everything we feel is from the neck down. Our breath brings us into our bodies and our feelings. Next Sophie talks about her studies and work and how they prepared her for her cancer diagnosis. Emily talks about benefit of sharing stories and how they can help other people move onward. Sophie introduces a caveat on sharing stories saying, we must be conscious of where we’re coming from when we tell our stories. She tells her story to enhance  our lives. Finally, Sophie states  “I don’t want even this podcast to be about my story. I want it to be about there is no lifeshock by which and through wich life is not awakening you to your most authentic, loving, and creative self. That’s what I want this podcast to be about and that is for everyone who’s listening. Everyone.”    Resources Mentioned:   Sophie’s Books: The Cancer Whisperer & Lifeshocks - and How to Love Them  Sophie’s email: hello@sophiesabbage.com Sophie’s TEDx on grief   Learn more at  https://sophiesabbage.com/ and  http://www.cancerwhispering.com/ to include Sophie’s on-line Masterclass Sophie Sabbage LinkedIn Emily Harman Soul Pajamas Onward: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Onward Movement Facebook Group PodcastPress

Esther Gokhale (Go-clay) has been involved in integrative therapies all her life. As a young girl growing up in India, she helped her mother, a nurse, treat abandoned babies waiting to be adopted. This early interest in healing led her to study biochemistry at Harvard and Princeton and, later, acupuncture at the San Francisco School of Oriental Medicine. After experiencing crippling back pain during her first pregnancy and unsuccessful back surgery, Gokhale began her lifelong crusade to vanquish back pain. Her studies at the Aplomb® Institute in Paris and years of research in Brazil, India, Portugal and elsewhere led her to develop the Gokhale Method, a unique, systematic approach to help people find their bodies’ way back to pain-free living. Gokhale practiced acupuncture and taught posture, dance, and yoga in her Palo Alto wellness center for over twenty years. The Gokhale Method continues to grow as qualified Gokhale Method teachers now teach the method worldwide. Gokhale's book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back, has sold over 100,000 copies and has been translated into eight languages. In 2010, Gokhale hosted the nationally televised program Back Pain: The Primal Posture Solution (available on DVD). Gokhale has taught at corporations such as Google, IDEO, Varian Medical Systems, and Facebook Inc. She has also presented at conferences including TEDx(Stanford), Ancestral Health Symposium, Weston Price Foundation Conference, and PrimalCon.  She continues to speak with physician groups including Stanford, PAMF, UCSF and has consulted for the trainers of the SF 49ers and several Stanford sports teams. In May 2013, The New York Times featured Esther in an article giving her the title, “The Posture Guru of Silicon Valley”. Esther Gokhale lives on Stanford University campus where she raised three children with her husband Brian White, chairman of the Math Department.
