Over the past several years, fear and anger have become the dominant forces in American politics. For Japanese elders, who were unjustly imprisoned during World War II because of their race, this political climate feels all too familiar. To satisfy their mission, the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation is committed to not only educate about the past, but also help shape the kind of leaders we need for the future. The Mineta-Simpson Institute is a dedicated retreat space at the center, a home for workshops and programming specifically designed to foster empathy, courage, and cooperation in the next generation of leaders. The Institute has expanded the Foundation's capacity for digital outreach, allowing us to carry the message of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation's message all over the world. Aura Sunada Newlin is a fourth-generation Wyomingite, fourth-generation Japanese American, and Executive Director for the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation (HMWF). Her heritage involves intertwined stories of imprisonment at Heart Mountain and Tule Lake; segregated military service; and hardships suffered by railroaders who were fired because of their Japanese ancestry. Aura was elected to the HMWF board of directors in 2013 and served as board secretary for eight years. She is also on the board of directors for the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts and was a founding member of the National Steering Committee for Tsuru for Solidarity. She previously taught Asian American Studies courses at the University of Wyoming and was a tenured faculty member in sociology and anthropology at Wyoming's Northwest College.Aura earned a BA in ethnomusicology from the University of Wyoming and an MA in medical anthropology from Case Western Reserve University. Now focusing on the anthropology of law, she is a PhD candidate at Case Western Reserve University. What a delightful time I had speaking with Aura Sunada Newlin of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation. And my visit to The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center was deeply moving and inspiring. My time at the Center and spent in conversation with Aura left me feeling quite certain that we are living at a time when lessons that were unlearned in the 1940's remain some of the most pressing lessons needed in our time.Aura Sunada Newlin is a fourth-generation Wyomingite, fourth-generation Japanese American, and Executive Director for the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation (HMWF). Tori Williams Douglass is an educator and podcaster who went from a cult-like family upbringing to an Assemblies of God bible college. Thankfully, she dropped out after just one year of the typical racism, sexism, queerphobia, and annoying theo-bro's, thus continuing and accelerating her deconstruction from christianity altogether. Today, her White Homework podcast and website is a crucial resource for all who are decolonizing our minds from anti-Blackness, and her Go Home Bible; You're Drunk podcast with co-host Justin Gentry uses humor and the hosts' extensive knowledge of the Bible to point out the absurdities in both the texts and the interpretations of the texts. In this episode, Scott and Tori go through Tori's short time at Western Bible College (which later became Western Bible University) and share some laughs about churches and Christian culture. This episode also has the debut of The Chapel Probation Players to give a satirical "other side." This week features traci kato-kiriyama, one of Scott's closest friends who is a poet, actor, activist, writer, playwright, and all-around badass. When you are installing tile, the technology behind the materials have sure changed in the last few years. If you have been dropping into the home center and using the same old products your dad was using then you might be well behind in what is new. There are a ton of new products that work better and are much easier to use that can be the difference of a tile project lasting a few years or a handful of decades. William White has a long history of tile. After installing for many years he worked in the industry with manufacturers and then became the lead instructor for Northwest College of Construction for nearly a decade. He then went on for nearly the next decade working with Ardex helping contractors, installers, and designers with the latest in installation best practices and technology. Annie Case graduated from Northwest College with an Associates of Applied Science in the Photographic Communications department. She is in love with the concept that she can build a career, while expressing her creative side to generate images. Adobe Photoshop became a crucial part of her life later in her high school years. She loved finding source images, and tried to recreate them. She knew there was much more she could learn within the software, but was also very aware that if she learned how to capture those images, then she could soon become the inspiration for herself. Annie began searching for schools that would educate her in the world of photography. Northwest College became the beginning of Annie’s career as a photographer. Annie enjoys waking up every morning with the knowledge that she has the power to create an image that will never be made in the same way she made it. She has learned to be a well-rounded photographer. Studio illustrations, on location and studio lit portraits, videography including work in the Smithsonian’s Museum, product photography for commercial promotions, and traditional film processing have all become staples of Annie's photography. The commercial aspect of photography is not all that she is passionate about. Yellowstone is an amazing area that played its part in shaping her into the photographer she is becoming. It became the birthplace of her love to capture personality of wildlife and nature. After graduating Annie moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to start her career. She is a full time working product photographer for Style Haven and spends all her free time photographing people, landscape, and wild life. Currently, Cosmic Connection is Annie’s large project. Cosmic Connection is an astrophotographer’s dream because they can learn how to capture amazing night imagery. As an image enthusiast, Annie would love to collaborate with you and make your visions a reality! Check out more of Annie's work at: https://cosmicconnection.net/

Join us as we explore the exciting world of astrophotography from The Milky Way to star trails. In this first episode, we decided to introduce ourselves and give a little of our background as astophotographers. Annie met Roy at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. They were both studying for, and in 2018 completed, their associates of applied science in Photographic Communications. Both Annie and Roy grew up in Wyoming and they loved living there. Wyoming shaped the way their photographic journeys would take them. It is the place they hold most dear to their heart, even now while they find themselves falling in love with Utah and living in Salt Lake City. On this episode, one reason only a quarter of furloughed Blackjewel employees have found new jobs is because existing job openings pay less. Northwest College is introducing new programs like a conservation law enforcement degree to help with its declining enrollment One of the most advanced forensic laboratories is located in Laramie. It solves wildlife-related attacks and crime. Those stories and more.
Aura Newlin is an anthropologist, educator, advocate and public speaker whose Wyoming roots run deep. A 4th-generation, Japanese American Wyomingite, Aura grew up in Riverton, Wyoming. Her parents, former peace-corps volunteers, exposed Aura and her siblings to a broader world through international volunteer work. This global imprint influenced Aura’s interest in learning about other cultures and led her to become an anthropologist. “Anthropology turns everything on its head. As anthropologists, we try to understand what it might be like to live in someone else’s shoes, to understand what their experiences are like through their eyes.” Aura loves sharing the world with her students by introducing them to anthropology and the practice of “questioning whether something is normal and natural or if that’s just seemingly normal and natural because that’s the way you were raised.” Aura landed her dream job teaching anthropology and sociology at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, a mere 15 miles from the Heart Mountain confinement site. After Pearl Harbor, up to 14,000 Japanese American immigrants and their children were incarcerated at Heart Mountain, one of ten confinement sites established by the War Relocation Authority during WWII. Her great-grandfather made his career as a railroader in southern Wyoming, but by WWII had moved to Hollywood, California for health reasons. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, effectively placing approximately 120,000 Japanese immigrants and their American-born children in war-time camps, Aura’s great-grandfather was sent back to Wyoming, this time to Heart Mountain. Aura’s grandfather, living and working for the Union Pacific railroad in Green River, Wyoming at this same time, was fired along with all the other employees of Japanese ancestry. Later, her grandfather was offered his job back, but he declined. For Aura, working as an educator in such close proximity to her relatives’ experience at Heart Mountain “feels like destiny.” In addition to teaching her students, she speaks around the state and to legal audiences around the country about what happened at Heart Mountain and the Japanese American incarceration. Reflecting on why she continues to educate her students and speak to various audiences, she says, “We need to embrace the bad along with the good, because it’s part of what makes us who we are. I don’t see Heart Mountain as something that belongs to Japanese American history. It is American history, and it is Wyoming history. As I go around the state talking with different communities about this, I hope to instill some of that passion and hope that I feel about this history. I would like to continue to have a voice at the national level and to be heard because we have an important story that needs to be told, and I like telling it.”
Amy McKinney, associate professor of history at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, discusses Harriette Cushman and her efforts to create a comprehensive poultry program in Montana. The first female poultry specialist in the United States, Cushman crossed many boundaries throughout her thirty-three-year career (1922–1955) with the Extension Service.
Friday night and I’ve gotta catch a flight to New York in a few hours. By the time you hear this, I’ll be snoozing away hoping a drink cart doesn’t slam into my knee or elbow. I’m Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s scores and more from the world of wrestling. Before we get into the dual meet action, there’s a pretty good little tournament going on in California, the California Community College state championships. Fresno City leads after the first day of competition with eight wrestlers reaching the semifinals and leading second-place Mt. San Antonio College 98.5 to 80.5. Cerritos is a distant third with 54.5. All those results are at trackwrestling.com and check out John Sachs’ tech-fall.com for photos from the event. Count the tattoos, you’ll be there a while. Rutgers fans showed up in force, setting a school-record for attendance with 6,754 fans at the RAC, but key wins by Alex Marinelli at 165 and Joey Gunther at 174 lifted seventh-ranked Iowa to a 23-15 win over upset-minded Rutgers on Friday. Iowa won its 23rd straight conference road dual and improved to 4-0 all-time against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers jumped out to a 12-0 lead after wins by Nick Suriano, Scott Delvechhio and Mike Van Brill, but then the strength of Iowa’s middle weights shone through, including Marinelli’s first dual meet victory coming against U23 World Champion Richie Lewis, who went up a weight from his expected competition weight of 157 pounds. Gunther fell behind early but a third-period takedown in the final minute plus riding time was the difference as he snatched away a victory from Joe Grello.5-4. Nick Gravina gave Rutgers it’s last lead of the bout with a win over Mitch Bowman at 184 before Cashtag Wilke and Sam Stoll closed the door on Rutgers’ upset hopes. Stoll finished off Razohnn Gross in 2:40 to end it. Nate Rotert’s major decision at 197 pounds and Alex Macki’s 7-5 win at 285 pounds broke a 16-16 tie and lifted No. 16 South Dakota State past No. 18 Central Michigan 23-16 in Brookings. South Dakota State’s Seth Gross continued to put up big numbers, earning a 16-2 major decision at 133 pounds, while 174-pounder David Kocher notched a convincing 10-5 win over C.J. Brucki in one of the dual’s key swing bouts. South Dakota State improved to 4-2. Navy dropped the first two bouts to Drexel, but stormed back to win seven of the next eight to power the Midshipmen to a 22-13 win over previously unbeaten Drexel. The Austin DeSanto watch is in full effect though, but he ONLY scored 13 points in a 13-6 win at 133. Solid wins checked in for Navy’s Nick Gil at 141 and Jadaen Bernstein at 174. By the way, Army-Navy football this weekend -- who you got? Michigan State went on the road and got past Buffalo of the MAC 17-16 on criteria three. True freshman RayVon Foley notched the biggest individual victory for the Spartans, an 8-6 victory in sudden victory over NCAA qualifier Kyle Akins at 125 pounds. Two major decisions were also key as Michigan State did lose a team point during the course of the dual. Overall, it was total match points that gave the Spartans the W. Fresno State put 3,700 fans in the seats on Friday night, but CSU Bakersfield won eight of the 10 matches as the Central Valley wrestling rivalry was rekindled. Sacred Heart won its first dual of the John Clark era, topping undermanned American International, a Division II school, 50-6. Eastern Michigan beat Cleveland State 29-13. In Division II, 10th-ranked Ashland topped West Liberty 24-13. Back to back falls in the middle by Bret Romanzak and Christian Price gave the Eagles some breathing room and wins by Tristen Wirich and Luke Cramer finished the dual off. Coker beat Emmanuel 21-11 in an ECAC matchup. Coker won the last four weight classes to earn the win over the Lions, who are actually searching for a head coach at the moment. Top-ranked Warburg, at least top-ranked for now, beat Cornell College 45-3. Eight of the nine victories were by bonus including falls by Bennen Doebel, Mike Ross and All-American Lance Evans. Sixth-ranked Messiah cruised past in-state rival Gettysburg 38-3. This one always stings for Gettysburg head coach Andy Vogel, who wrestled at Messiah. Yeah, the Falcons are pretty good typically. Mustache power was apparently the key for Heidelberg to knock off John Carroll 22-16 in Division III. Heidelberg, which if you may remember from the first editions of Short Time, is the STUDENT PRINCES. Wins by Patrick Brown, Tyler Hammack and Christan Climer at the upper weights gave Heidelberg 13 key points and the come-from-behind victory. Hammack earned the dual’s only fall in 92 seconds. No. 17 UW-La Crosse thumped Luther 34-4. Keep an eye on La Crosse 125-pounder Zach Villareal. He’s off to a real solid start . 14-0 with 11 bonus victories and eight falls. Illinois kid, contender. Mixing things up between divisions, we saw Division II Limestone get past a scrappy Southeastern University squad 21-16. Northwest Kansas Tech from the NJCAA upended NAIA Concordia of Nebraska 23-21. Cloud County won its first dual in program history with a 40-18 win over NAIA Central Christian. Also in the junior college ranks, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M swept Labette and Northwest College in a tri-meet on Friday night. The Karstetter brothers had a good night, going 4-0 as they combined for four bonus victories -- two techs, a major and a fall. NEO topped Labette 51-6, while they topped Northwest 47-4. The lone win for Northwest? Yup, Nodir Safarav, the Uzbek import. The big news in college wrestling is of course the wonderful world of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. There’s a lot to watch and with 20 different schools represented in the semifinals, it’ll sure to be a good Saturday of wrestling. Thanks to Earl Smith for that stat, I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a semi-daily look around the world of college wrestling. Michigan leads the CKLV after the first day. Ohio State’s in second place followed by Nebraska, Arizona State and Northern Iowa. Michigan put five wrestlers into the semifinals, while Ohio State put six. Nebraska and UNI each have four. As always, the Cliff Keen provides then ranking public some major headaches as upsets are plentiful. At 125 pounds, a pair of All-Americans fell as returning NCAA runner-up Ethan Lizak was knocked off 4-3 in the quarterfinals by Utah Valley’s Taylor LaMont. Jay Schwarm of Northern Iowa avenged a loss earlier in the day to Cornell’s Mike Russo and Schwarm then beat Arizona State’s Ryan Millhof to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Boise State transfer and past JUCO All-American Will Bardezbain of Kent State topped North Carolina’s Dalton Macri 18-15 in the Round of 16. Josh Terao of American is the lowest seed to reach the semifinals at 133 pounds. The Eagle topped No. 2 seed Dom Forys of Pittsburgh 6-3 in the quarters. He’ll face Jack Mueller of Virginia, who defeated 11th-seeded Austin DeSanto of Drexel in the other bottom bracket quarter. Up top, It’s a Michigan-Ohio State semi with top-seeded Stevan Micic set to face off with Ohio State’s Luke Pletcher. Pletcher survived a scare in a first-round tiebreaker win over Ben Thornton of Purdue. At 141, two-time All-American Bryce Meredith of Wyoming will give Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis his first test in the semifinals. Down low, it’ll be a Chad Red-Josh Alber semifinal. Nebraska’s Red topped Eli Stickley of Wisconsin 7-5 in the quarters while Northern Iowa’s Alber upended Tommy “The Cat” Thorn of Minnesota 4-3. Top upset of that bracket came as Pitt’s Nick Zanetta beat No. 4 seed Javier Gasca of Michigan State in the pigtails. At 149, a modest upset saw North Carolina’s Troy Heilmann go all South Plainfield on Ke-Shawn Hayes of Ohio State. Heilmann beat Hayes after falling behind 6-0 in the first period. Heilmann will face All-American Max Thomsen of UNI in the top bracket semi, while Justin Oliver of Central Michigan will face 900-year-old Colton McCrystal of Nebraska in the bottom bracket semi. McCrystal saw a huge lead evaporate in the quarters, but held on to beat Zander Wick 11-10. I found out Mr. Wick’s secret internet password -- it’s Mister Wick! Drew Carey Show reference if you’re wondering. At 157, top-seeded Tyler Berger of Nebraska looked uninspiring, but he got the job done reaching the semifinals. He’ll face All-American Alec Pantaleo of Michigan. Pantaleo pinned North Dakota State’s Clay “I’m a lot smarter than you” Ream in 1:09. We’ll see a rematch of an earlier dual this year in the bottom bracket semi as Arizona State’s Josh Shields will face Ohio State’s Micah Jordan. Michigan’s Logan Massa fell 8-4 to the other Wick twin, Evan, 8-4 in the quarters at 165 pounds. Wick scored a third-period escape and a takedown and added a riding time point to beat the returning All-American. Down low, TeShan Campbell of Ohio State will face All-American David McFadden of Virginia Tech. Campbell beat Nebraska’s Isaiah White, last year’s Division II champion, 3-1. Nick Wanzek of Minnesota survived a scare in the Round of 16 and then used riding time to outlast Anthony Valencia. He’s got Wick next. Anyone else getting a Monty Python reference at all? 1-2-3-5 here in the semis at 174 pounds. Arizona State’s Zahid Valenica is beast mode right now. He’ll face a dangerous Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa in the semifinals. Lujan pinned Jaeden Bernstein of Navy in under a minute, while it’s that whole Michigan-Ohio State thing again, the state up north against that state down south with Myles Amine facing off with Bo Jordan. At 184, Nebraska’s Taylor Venz is the story thus far. The No. 13 seed pinned All-American Drew Foster of Northern Iowa and then did the whole pin thing again against No. 5 seed Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan to reach the semifinals. He’ll face two-time All-American Myles Martin of Ohio State in the semis. Down low, it’s a 2-3 matchup with Virginia Tech’s Zack Zavatsky meeting up with Michigan’s Domenic Abounader. Nothing super crazy in the rest of the weight. Top-seeded Kollin Moore of Ohio State was less than stellar in three early-round wins, but in the quarters, he picked it up, majoring Wisconsin’s Hunter Ritter to reach the semifinals. He’ll face CSU Bakersfield’s Matt Williams. Williams topped Northern Colorado’s Jacob Seely 8-1 in the quarters. Down low, things got messy. Second-seeded Jared Haught of Virginia Tech reached the semis without incident, but his opponent is unseeded Stephen Lioseau of Drexel. Lancaster Catholic REPRESENT! Loiseau beat Purdue’ s Christian Brunner in his opening round bout and then beat Cal Poly’s Tom Lane, who’d majored All-American Kevin Beazley of Michigan in the previous round. There’s more on that Drexel team than just a true freshman, folks. At heavyweight, the only sizeable -- get it? Sizeable? Heavyweights? Yeah, Purdue’s Shawn Streck beat No. 4 seed Ryan Solomon of Pittsburgh early, but Streck was beaten in the semis by Stanford’s Nathan Butler. Butler will face the hulking Fowlerville, Michigan native Adam Coon. Down low, it’s the People’s Champ Jacob Kasper of Duke meeting up with college wrestling’s oldest heavyweight, Tanner Hall of Arizona State in a battle of All-Americans. Brackets and video is all at Flowrestling. You wrestle with who you’ve got and right now, Lock Haven’s got a few guys who like to score bonus points. Friday proved to be the biggest win to date of Scott Moore’s head coaching career as Lock Haven scored four bonus victories in five wins to upend No. 11 Rutgers in front of 2,300-plus fans at Thomas Field House in Mat Town. Key victories were registered by Ronnie Perry over Eleazar DeLuca at 149 pounds, Chance Marsteller over John Van Brill at 165 and Thomas Haines, who delivered the match-ending fall at heavyweight over Razohnn Gross in just 43 seconds. Lock Haven -- the Bald Eagles soaring. Unranked Princeton tried to make it interesting at Jadwin Gym, but No. 5 Lehigh was too much as late wins by Jordan Kutler and Ryan Preisch slammed the door on the Tigers 25-13. Scotty Parker picked up another fall at 133 pounds for the Mountain Hawks, giving him three straight wins by fall. Six more and he’ll tie Shute. Seventh-ranked Iowa escaped with an 18-17 win over No. 15 Illinois at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night. Sam Stoll was the hero as he literally fell into a fortuitous position as Illinois heavyweight Deuce Rachal tried to throw the GRECO Junior world medalist and ended up on his back and stuck to give Iowa the come-from-behind victory. Pretty gross dual all the way around though. Isaiah Martinez looked good, but grass is also green. No. 22 Rider topped Penn 19-15. Notable wins registered by Rider’s B.J. Clagon over Joe Velliquette and Chad Walsh over May Bethea. Heavyweight Ryan Cloud sealed the win for the Broncs with a 10-4 win at 285 over Patrik Garren. The loss was the first for the Roger Reina Head Coach of Wrestling Roger Reina since he returned to be the head coach of the Quakers, which oddly enough, is the only Ivy League team whose mascot isn’t a color or an animal. That was actually a Final Jeopardy question once. A pair of ranked foes met in Division II in an MIAA conference matchup as No. 6 Central Oklahoma topped No. 21 Fort Hays State 22-14 in Hays, Kansas. UCO won six of the 10 bouts. Fort Hays’ Conrad Cole made a statement at 125 pounds, teching No. 4 Josh Lindsey. Fourth-ranked Caleb Cotter sealed the dual for the Bronchos, that’s Bronchos with an H, kind of like Stanley, with a C. Cotter topped Dakota Gulley 6-3 at 285 to ice the win. Out in Great Falls, Montana, a mix of Division II, NAIA and junior colleges met up at the Battle of the Rockies duals. McKendree, the third-ranked team in Division II, beat host Providence -- formerly known as Great Falls, Minot State and Simon Fraser, which was ranked 12th in Divison II. Montana State-Northern from the NAIA was unbeaten, but due to NAIA rules not counting duals against non-four year schools as official bouts, the Lights -- yes, the LIGHTS -- only officially scored one win, and that was over Division II Simon Fraser. Northwest College’s Nodir Safarav went 3-0 at 125 pounds. He’s the guy who won the Dave Schultz. How someone goes from Uzbekistan to Powell, Wyoming is beyond me. In the NAIA, Baker topped Graceland 24-20. Two quick falls there delivered by Baker’s Lucas Lovvorn in 21 seconds and David Dow in 24 seconds. Baker’s the Wildcats and their from Baldwin City, Kansas. Shout out to Dan Harris. Oh, and coach Cody Garcia. Other scores from around the nation Western State Colorado beat Chadron State 30-11. Marc Antoni-Macias’ Hunter Hawks beat second-year Keystone 40-12. And Western New England topped Rhode Island College 44-2 JOIN THE TEAM And if you're a fan of the extensive and broad-based reach of the shows on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, become a TEAM MEMBER today. Finally, wrestling has COME BACK TO FRESNO. With apologies to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, that’s the top story for Friday, November 17. This is SHORT TIME SHOTS, I’m Hall of Fame announcer, broadcaster and writer Jason Bryant What isn’t a top story -- I actually owned the original version of NBA Jam with Charles Barkley on the Phoenix Suns instead of THUNDER Dan Majerle. But he coaches Grand Canyon and they cut wrestling, so screw them. While the score wasn’t super important, the fact we had wrestling at the SaveMart Center in Fresno, California for the first time in almost 11 years, that’s the deal. Sure, 14th-ranked Illinois piled up bonus points and Isaiah Martinez won his 100th collegiate match, but we saw a school President, Joseph Castro, man up and say “This area cares about wrestling and we’re bringing back our team.” Donkey like former AD Thomas Boeh might have put the team on ice for a while, but coach Troy Steiner and his crew are going to build a winner in the Central Valley That didn’t happen on Friday though. Two big wins were registered by the Bulldogs, whom I represented today with #WrestlingShirtADay. Kristian Olivas topped Eric Barone at 149 and Greg Gaxiola knocked off Kyle Langenderfer. I just want to play some Nerfherder after saying Langenderfer. Santa has a Mullet -- look it up, it’s a song by Nerfherder. Oh, I-Mar improved to 100-2 all-time. He’s good. Top-ranked Penn State is probably the best road draw attendance-wise in the country. The Nittany Lions saw over 3,000 witness their 40-2 blitzkrieg of Binghamton on Friday night. Seven of the Penn State wins came via bonus points with Jason Nolf and Zain Retherford each earning falls, while Bo Nickel fell to third in the Penn State individual Hodge standings merely capturing a major decision. The one Penn State loss? You guessed it, 125. No. 6 Minnesota headed west to Brookings and beat No. 16 South Dakota State in front 3,063 fans at Frost Arena. The highlight there was at 133 pounds where No. 1 Seth Gross topped No. 6 Mitch McKee 9-4. South Dakota State did score a modest upset at 157 pounds where Luke Zilverberg beat 10th-ranked Jake Short 5-2. No. 8 Iowa swept the Iowa City Duals. In other news, water is wet. Zack Zavatsky needed overtime to get past Bryce Carr at 184 pounds in the top bout of the night as No. 9 Virginia Tech beat host Chattanooga 28-7. Little homer note, B.C. LaPrade picked up his first career dual meet victory. He’s from New Kent, which is right up the road from where I grew up and he’s named after a headache power for a reason. Even without a couple of its regular starters, 10th-ranked Lehigh flew past No. 24 Edinboro 27-14. Scott Parker continued his torrid start, pinning nationally ranked Korbin Myers at 5:33 to spark the Mountain Hawks victory. Also of note for Lehigh, Gordon Wolf earned a 16-8 major decision over Austin Matthews at 165. On paper, Cornell didn’t look that strong. On the mat, No. 19 Cornell said we’re Ivy Leaguers, whatever that means. The Big Red won seven of 10 and got three falls en route to a 30-10 pasting of No. 13 Northern Iowa. Chaz Tucker set the tone with a fall over Jack Wagner to start the dual at 133, while Jon Jay Chavez and Ben Darmstadt also picked up pins. 184-pound freshman Max Dean, the younger brother of four-time All-American Gabe, announced his presence Nuke Laloosh style -- with authority -- beating All-American Drew Foster 9-7. Also in the dual, UNI’s Taylor Lujan beat All-American Brandon Womack 5-3. Oh, and that freshman, Yianni Diakomihalis, he beat Josh Alber 5-2. Two-time All-American Bryce Meredith topped super freshman Chad Red 11-5 at 141, but that was the only read bright spot for the Cowboys as the Huskers won seven out of 10 to cruise. Nebraska’s Tyler Berger outlasted Archie Colgan 5-4 at 157, while Nebraska’s Isaiah White, last year’s Division II champion at Notre Dame College, topped Branson Ashworth 7-5. Ryan Solomon’s major decision at heavyweight rallied No. 25 Pittsburgh past CSU Bakersfieid. Things weren’t so hot for the Panthers otherwise, as No. 18 Wisconsin declawed Pitt 26-6. Yes, cliché puns! Elsewhere, Virginia topped Gardner-Webb 30-11. The Wahoos picked up falls from Louie Hayes at 125 and Andrew Atkinson at 165. In Division II, No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown topped PSAC rival Kutztown 24-10. Five of the six ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers picked up victories, including a technical fall at 174 pounds from 2016 D2 champion Tyler Reinhart. Kutztown’s Ryan Appleby, ranked fifth, did knock off 11th-ranked D.J. Sims 5-3 at heavyweight. In the NAIA, fifth-ranked Providence welcomed a new member to the family as head coach Caleb Schaeffer and his wife Annie welcomed Kamden Kendrick to the world. He’s already able to take dad down. The school, formerly known as Great Falls, gave Coach Schaeffer a nice “it’s a boy” gift, beating Warner Pacific 34-11. Sixth-ranked University of the Cumberlands -- they’re coached by Chris Fleeger -- the Patriots beat Indiana Tech 31-13. No. 11 Southern Oregon also beat Eastern Oregon in a directional battle in the Cascade Conference. And of note in the junior college ranks, Western Wyoming topped Northwest College 30-15. What’s notable about a junior college dual between teams most of you have probably never heard of? Well, Uzbekistan native Nodir Safarov, who’s ranked in the WORLD, is wrestling at 133 pounds for Northwest College. He had a fall in 26 seconds. BOOM SHAKA LAKKA.
