In this episode, Richard Tubb speaks to Craig Sharp, the founder of UK based MSP Abussi, one of the longest-running managed service providers in the country. Craig founded Abussi in 1995 as a database supplier, and the business has transitioned over the past 26 years from software into break/fix hardware. Today they offer managed services, which they've been rocking for more than 15 years. Craig is something of a go giver and incredibly knowledgeable on customer success and managed services and is always willing to help a fellow MSP.Richard asks Craig how he started the business and where he got the name from, before delving deeper into what makes Abussi unique, including Craig's decision to keep the business small and how they work on relationships to retain clients long-term.Craig explains the business benefits for visiting your clients in-person and why he focuses on systems and processes rather than tech tools, and why his passion for sharing knowledge ultimately helps his clients.Richard asks Craig about the tools Abussi use to help their clients and the vendors they partner with, as well as why they recently changed some suppliers. They also discuss how the Abussi team stays up to date with the industry and what the future holds for the business.Craig shares his advice on where IT and managed services is going as an industry, how to handle wrong-fit clients and the biggest mistakes Craig sees MSPs making today.Richard also asks Craig to share who his mentors and influences are and what he does to relax, as well as what the MSP community means to him and why you shouldn't be afraid of your competitors. According to the Department of Business and Industry, there are 5.6 million businesses in the UK.But get this - out of the 5.6 million businesses, 4.2 million had no employees - they are sole traders. And 99.2% of all businesses have less than 49 employees.Only 4% of businesses ever hit £1m turnover. And yet, SMEs account for three-fifths of all employment and around half of the turnover in the UK private sector. Last year total employment in SMEs was 16.3 million (61% of the total), whilst turnover was estimated at £2.3 trillion (52%)There are millions of one-person armies and small companies, and they make a massive impact on the nation's economy. Now it's fair to say that my conversations with founders so far on the podcast have focussed on the larger company end in terms of turnover and valuation and so it was time to address this. My guest is Mark Telford. Mark is a business owner, he is a practising Chartered Accountant who advises business owners and because that doesn't keep him busy enough, he also coaches other accountants on growing their own practices.Mark's clients are in the main smaller business from sole traders working within their own Ltd company to larger owner-managed firms. As an accountant Mark takes a refreshing approach in that he not only keeps his clients' tax efficient and compliant but also coaches business owners to utilise their companies to help them create their ideal lifestyle.During our conversation, Mark explains the difference between a lifestyle business and what he calls a performance business and why it's vital to know which one you are.He shares his 7-point checklist to create massive value in your business so that it could be sold for a meaningful amount of money. He also explains the importance of doing your due diligence on any potential buyer to avoid the tough situation one of his clients experienced. If you're a sole trader - one man or one-woman army or you own a small business and are considering your future and the right direction of travel, then this conversation is for you.Links and Contact detailsTelfords AccountantsMark Telford - Founder - Telfords Chartered Accountants | LinkedInBooksTraction: Get a Grip on Your Business Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You by John WarrillowCompany of One: Why Staying Small is the Next Big Thing for BusinessAcceleratorDent GlobalThis podcast is produced by GR Media Sponsored by Capital Asset Management

Business Basics

Diese Frage stellt Paul Jarvis in seinem Buch "Company of One: Why Staying Small is the Next Big Thing for Business".

Today, Debbie Weil brings Paul Jarvis on the show. Paul  is a veteran of the online tech world, as well as an author and designer of data analytics software and online courses. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest in Canada and has worked with Silicon Valley startups, pro-sports athletes, and Fortune 500 companies. But what’s truly notable about Paul is that even before the pandemic he was living an isolated, private, and minimalist life as a solo entrepreneur.Paul is the author of a recent book, Company of One: Why Staying Small is the Next Big Thing for Business. He’s designed a number of online courses, bringing in several million dollars in revenue,  he's the co-founder of Fathom Analytics, and until very recently he wrote a popular weekly e-newsletter, The Sunday Dispatches, that he sent to his list of 35,000 subscribers. His driving value is simplicity. As he says in this conversation, “I crave simplicity,” - especially as it relates to business and work.” Meaning how can you solve a business problem simply rather than adding layers of complexity. In mid-November, Paul announced in an email to his 35,000 subscribers that he was halting his newsletter after eight years and also taking a break from podcasts and interviews. He noted that he's been sharing his thoughts online for 20 years. "I don’t want attention or power or admiration," he says. "I don’t want to be a personal brand or a known dude on the internet. I just want to exist and do my work privately." So we’re lucky to have this conversation with him. Debbie hopes you enjoy it as much as she did. And that you take away a few nuggets of wisdom about work - and life - that you can apply in this time of the pandemic.  Mentioned in this episode or useful:Paul’s Website: https://pjrvs.com/Company of One: Why Staying Small is the Next Big Thing for Business by Paul Jarvis (Mariner Books 2019)The Sunday Dispatches Fathom Analytics: Paul is co-founder with Jack EllisAbove Board, Fathom Analytics’ podcast (co-hosted by Paul) discussing privacy and business in the digital age.Paul's online courses on how to use WordPressCreative Class (Paul's online course for freelancers)Chimp Essentials (Paul's online course on how to use MailChimp) A podcast episode with another successful solo entrepreneur:Derek Sivers on Slow Thinking, Connecting, and Intentional Living Note from DebbieI hope you enjoyed this podcast. What if we need to work with several team members? In this episode, we look at how the primary task is to get the right people in, rather than playing leader. These new class of business owners are fostering a unique breed of business that starts small and stays small.
