Today, I am joined by digital marketing icon Chris Brogan. Chris is a New York Times best-selling author of nine books, including Trust Agents. He's also the host of The Backpack Show and CEO of Owner Media Group, which sells online training and skill upgrades in the form of webinars and courses. Chris has spoken for or consulted with companies such as Disney, Google, GM, Sony, Coke, and Microsoft. He's part of Tony Robbins' internet Money Master series, and StatSocial ranked Chris as the number three power influencer. Forbes listed Chris as one of the Must Follow Marketing Minds, and his website is one of the 100 best websites for entrepreneurs. In today's episode, we're going to discuss how Chris has leveraged the waves of tectonic shifts to achieve success. Learning to Ride the Wave Chris Brogan wasn't born a successful entrepreneur. He worked at a telecom company and when he saw opportunities, he seized them. He rode the wave of those opportunities to become who he is today. During the time Chris worked at a telecom company, he constantly read about the business world, learning about unique ideas that weren't really being applied. This created the desire to start his own business so he could implement the great ideas he was reading about. He eventually launched his own blog, but nobody really cared. It took him years just to get his first 100 readers. A few years later, he started his own podcast, but again, nobody really cared. So, he decided to start an event with a friend. On the second day of the event, he met Jeff Pulver, a millionaire, who had just run a conference on video on the internet. Jeff offered to take Chris out and suggested they run a conference together. After that, he immediately started working with major brands with Jeff, and jumped into another company about a year later since, at that time, they were just a bit too early for the video trend. Chris eventually started running part of a consultancy where he worked with things like digital and new social media platforms such as Twitter and rode the wave from there. In time, people started asking questions about how the new media applied to their business, and that's how Chris started working with big companies such as Google and Microsoft. “It was all the same kinds of questions like, ‘What do we do with this stuff? Is Twitter worth it?'” Chris said. “I was able to show [them] where there might be a little bit of magic.” In 2009, Chris started the first company that he ran 100% himself. Since then, he has run five or six different iterations of a corporation. Part of being a successful entrepreneur is about timing and riding those waves of opportunity. When Chris started his own blog and podcast, it wasn't immediately successful because the timing wasn't right. The blog and podcast tectonic shifts hadn't happened yet. Now, blogs and podcasts are extremely important and essential, but it wasn't the same way 20 years ago. “I was early on a bunch of those waves,” Chris said. “[But beyond] being early to the pile, what I've been so willing to do over and over and over again is fail, be wrong, look stupid. And I get there faster because of it.” Chris's blog failed. His podcast failed. He left his work with Jeff on internet video after a year because the wave wasn't quite there yet. But every time, he didn't let failure stop him. He got back up and looked for the next opportunity, and jumped back into opportunities when the time was right. “I got to everything faster than a lot of other people just by being willing to fail in front of everybody and be willing to try new ways. I think that's what separates me from all the people who came up in my spaces. They were still trying really hard to preserve their reputation. And I built my reputation around falling right down a hole in front of you, and just showing you what comes next,” Chris explained. He made his career by riding the waves to shore as tectonic shifts happened. Below are three current tectonic shifts Chris has successfully adapted to. Being Human Being human and more personalized in our businesses is crucial to success. This is especially important now as the pandemic has increased the need for human connection. “The minute someone feels like you're not there to help them when they're having a rough time, that's a problem. So make your support system a lot more human and connectable. Second off, as you're selling anything, beyond just features and benefits, make it easy to reach a person. Make it easy to be able to ask those questions you might have,” Chris explained. When I asked Chris about one thing he is passionate about, he said it is helping companies no matter what size. We have to ask ourselves, “How can we be more human even at a distance? How do we bring a bit more humanity into what we do?” Our businesses need to be about connecting with people. Companies have such a great opportunity to reach out and be human, but we blow it so many times because we're too focused on making a profit. The minute someone feels like we aren't there to help them, they are going to leave. To be successful, we really need to make our support a lot more human. Influencer Marketing One of the biggest tectonic shifts that the business world is dealing with today is credibility marketing. It used to be 20 years ago that businesses would buy a whole bunch of advertising, and then use that reach to tell the world how awesome they were. And it often worked. To a great extent it worked. But today, if businesses do that, it doesn't work so well. People don't trust what businesses say about themselves anymore. This means businesses have to find much more credible ways to communicate with their potential customers. This is why credibility marketing has become such an important tectonic shift today. Businesses are shifting more and more to credibility marketing in many different ways, such as through influencer marketing, reviews marketing, word-of-mouth marketing, and client testimonial videos. When implementing influencer marketing, the first thing we need to do is find the right influencer to work with. As I mentioned earlier, StatSocial ranked Chris as the number three power influencer. But this doesn't mean he's the right influencer for everybody. Chris shared a story in which a company asked him to promote a paper shredder. So, he made a video for them. He didn't have any paper in his house, so he shredded the manual and said, “I don't know what else I should show you because it just ate the manual.” The humor was good for him, but the company never sent him another paper shredder. And why? Because Chris wasn't the right, credible person to promote their product. Just because someone has a massive following, doesn't mean they're the right person to talk about our product. We need to find someone whose following is largely our target audience. We also need to find an influencer who likes and uses our product, and who is credible to talk about the product. “If you're going to look for influencers, it will be so much better if we do it the other way around. Who's talking lovingly about my product?” Chris said. As we search for the right influencer for us, we can search for people who already use our product. That way they will be much more credible to our audience. A good example of this is when Chris reached out to Johnsonville Sausage. During the summer, he had started to talk about their sausage in his videos just because he loved it so much. He ended up reaching out to the company and doing a sponsored video for them. This video actually mattered since he was able to influence his audience. The Age of Distraction We live in an age of distraction. There are thousands of different good things constantly competing for the time and attention of our potential customers. Our phones get notifications throughout the day from so many different people. We get so many text messages, email notifications, app reminders, updates, etc. we could live in our little notification bar on our phones. “If the notification screen is the battlefield, and if all of a sudden every single website is like, ‘Please can we send you notifications?' . . . how is a lowly old email going to get into somebody?” Chris said. These are the questions we have to be asking ourselves and trying to answer. We need to pay attention to the market and where our specific audience is going. “In a world where we're not willing to sit still for an ad, you've got to put some really interesting information in front of us, for us to sit still enough to want to consume it,” Chris said. It is a competition for every second of our consumer's attention. We need to make sure we are creative and cut directly to the chase. We need to show consumers how we can help them achieve the things that matter most to them. “Instead of attention and distraction being the big challenge, it's more, “Can I find the person that I hope to serve in some way?' And that's what we do. That's the goal. If you're going to try to be influential in some way, that's how you're going to learn,” Chris said. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Chris for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We need to ride the “waves” of tectonic shifts. We need to be more human and personalized in our businesses. People don't trust what businesses say about themselves anymore. This means we have to find much more credible sources, such as influencers, to promote our products. Just because someone has a massive following, doesn't mean they're the right person to talk about our product. We need to find an influencer whose following is our target audience. We live in an age of distraction. We have to constantly fight for the time of our customers. In order to capture their attention, we need to show them what value we offer as fast as possible. Chris Brogan was very kind to be on my show at launch...this is a quick chat, but well worth a listen. Fun, and insightful about what is right and what is wrong in the world of content creation. Chris Brogan explores how people use content and community to build marketplaces around areas of belonging. He is CEO of Owner Media Group, a sought after public speaker, and the New York Times bestselling author of eight books and working on his ninth, Belong: A Framework for Embracing Community, Driving the Economy and Building the Future. Learn more about him at chrisbrogan.com. How did you become a Buddhist Chris went to an event with his better half Jacq Shambala event. Jacq broke all the rules and became BFFs with Pema Chodron Chris does his Buddhism on his own by reading and meditating. Can you run your life at 40% and get a business going? YES! Chris see many people starting out running around being busy because they don't know what they are supposed to do...he get's that. Figure out where you belong instead of where you fit in...then things start getting smarter, quicker, faster. Chris serves people who are trying to figure how to: Create Content that Nurtures a community and perhaps earn the opportunity to create a marketplace You can run at 40% when you stop chasing "everything" and you start serving those people you have the pleasure and opportunity to serve. If you don't know where you belong, it's takes some internal work to figure out where you are supposed to be. Life at 40% allows one to build an energy reserve Being sleep deprived doesn't serve anybody...should be for emergency (non business) use only...such as life and death situations. Chris build his life with plenty of blank space on his calendar to serve his people. Chris never has burnout He puts his mask on first he serves himself and his higher power 2nd circle are the people he loves the most...not all his loved ones...those he loves the most. 3rd are mentors and people he mentors 4th are customers Many people put customers first, but those are the people who gain/lose weight, or get sick and loose time. Chris Brogan: Belonging, Content, and Community People are throwing out content without knowing "WHY" they are doing it. There's a lot of box checking going on in the Platform space....somebody said I need a podcast...here's a podcast....CHECK! It makes Chris weepy. He wants the whole "content marketing" community to work better Content has to serve 1) the content marketer is served by creating a possibility for an opportunity to sell 2) serve the community as useful, entertaining and informative. Belong to the Community you want to serve...like if you want to serve the Spartan Race crowd...run the Spartan race...or partner with them. You need to listen to what the community wants and needs and nurture your belonging relationship within the community. Then you can earn the opportunity to sell within that community. The reason people have a hard time selling is they are pushing against a space wherein they have not earned the opportunity to sell...that's what Chris is trying to fix. You don't need to create a community you just need to belong and start serving to earn an opportunity to sell. Are "Quotes" content marketing? No. A quote of Chris's is loaded into a robot that tweets 100 times everyday and they all have @chrisbrogan. This screws up his tweeter feed. Those are robots talking to robots...nobody cares about your quotes. Chris did 45 tweets everyday...the same tweets...nobody complained. Sharing other people's stuff is pretty cool. The powerful shares are natural and organic within the community that contains cleverly embedded branding. Like the Spartan Race Community loves to snap instagram pics of people all muddy jumping over fire...that's powerful content. Quoting a bunch of crap because you think you are supposed to be making noise is just making noi...

When a lot of people hear me say that, they scoff and go, ‘Kids these days.’ I’m thinking, ‘What if they’re right? What if stories are too bloated?’ The new Spider-Man Homecoming is the best Spider-Man movie ever made because they didn’t bother telling us the origin story because guess what? Chris Brogan, CEO of Owner Media Group, sought-after public speaker, and New York Times bestselling author of nine (soon-to-be 10) books, shares the essential mindset elements to build relationships in business. Chris Brogan’s Journey Chris started out as a blogger in 1998, but many years passed until wide audiences started paying attention to his message. He embarked in collaborative projects with friends until finally, through funding from another company, he started a consulting business to help entrepreneurs figure out digital media and the online space. Chris's no-nonsense approach to business, hard work, and dedication helped him become a notable influencer. He has spoken for or consulted with the biggest brands you know, including Disney, Coke, Google, GM, Microsoft, and many more. People like Paulo Coelho, Harvey Mackay, and Steven Pressfield enjoy sharing their projects and best ideas with Chris, because they know he’ll share them with you. Tony Robbins had Chris on his Internet Money Masters series. Forbes listed Chris as one of the Must Follow Marketing Minds of 2014, plus listed his website as one of the 100 best websites for entrepreneurs. Statsocial rated Chris the #3 power influencer online. Building authority and creating new connections Grow your audience and connections by leveraging your skills Chris created his own content platform (blog), which allowed him to build authority, but that alone wasn't enough to expand his reach. He leveraged his writing skills as a guest blogger for prominent sites so he could reach a much wider audience. The essential mindset to build long-lasting connections In a few words: Be genuine and always be guided by your values. He doesn't use formal systems when it comes to networking. instead, he tries to directly relate and connect with the person he wants to build a relationship with. For Chris, a measure of success is “being able to say no to the things I don’t want to do.” When there's a disjoint between a business proposal and what he stands for, he simply moves on. Clear communication is key. Chris spells out what he will and will not do early in every business relationship, setting the stage for long-lasting connections built on trust. One thing you’re most excited about Chris is excited about fast-evolving technologies and how they'll affect businesses. Voice technology, artificial intelligence, and chatbots are changing the way businesses interact with their customers. He's dedicated to helping companies find better ways to connect and build trust through all these changes. When we decided to launch a podcast that will be devoted to customer focus for entrepreneurs, I wasn’t sure what will come out of these interviews. It seems like Marketing, and Messages and Customer Focus, everything connected to customer’s approach totally changed during this huge Technological Revolution we are all part of. We are celebrating today the 12th episode of the show, and I must admit the message is very clear: When I ask for their best advice I’m getting over and over the same answer. Guy Kawasaki, Chris Brogan, Marcus Sheridan, John Lee Dumas, Kate Erickson, Josh Elledge and many successful entrepreneurs – all talk over and over about one thing: You must talk with your customers (and listen to them)!! In this episode I’ll try to walk you through the best advices of these very successful entrepreneurs. I believe each and every one of you, our listeners, will come with a slightly different point of view on this complicated issue of winning your customers. I would like to share with you the first best advice, the advice of Chris Brogan. To ask what does the customer want in this moment and how can we give them that? How can we deliver something that is going to be great for a customer? I would take a big piece of paper, real life paper and a real pen or pencil, I would start with a circle in the middle and say this is my customer, how do I get them what they want? and what is my role in it? Forbes listed Chris as one of the Must Follow Marketing Minds of 2014, plus listed his website as one of the 100 best websites for entrepreneurs. Statsocial rated Chris the #3 power influencer online. Chris lives in northern Massachusetts. His better half is Jacqueline Carly, between the two of them, they have three kids. Most passionate about I really interested and have been for many years about how do companies use technology to drive better human interaction. A lot of times we focus on the wrong part, on all the various new channels, all the new technologies and automation. While our customers want to be seen. The challenge is helping the customers feel they are getting what they want, and delivering that. Chris best advice about approaching the customer The best advice that I can have for a startup or entrepreneurial person is always design forward from the customer. A business should really look to be helpful first and they should think in the terms of is this simple? Is this smart? And is this sharable? Biggest failure with customers I fail every day! My biggest ones are every time I try to design from my idea or my arrogant or my ego, that usually fail, because I believe that I know best. My biggest specific failure, I started a bunch of little private online communities that I thought everyone was going to love – healthcare, nonprofits, real-estate end more, and I fail horribly. Every entrepreneur is so smart, the experience I have many times with those people is that they developed a product they know how to create but they haven’t necessarily developed a product that anyone asked for. Biggest success due to the right customer approach I don’t know if I had my greatest success yet.., my greatest success will be when thousands of people say “you’ve really changed my business and my life and I feel like I can do better because I followed what you gave me as advice” and that hasn’t really happened in a great volume yet. I guess I’m still waiting for my parade….. Recommendation of a tool for customer focus, marketing or sales. It’s a difficult answer, customers want to contact us however they want to contact us. Because all those channels requires so much attention, what it calls is a lot more human to listen to the customer wherever they chose to contact us. You need all the tools that will allow you the best connect with people. If you forced me to the wall, the answer will be email. Because it’s the most flexible and still the most predominant of all the tools, email marketing, email newsletter and correspondence is the best way to make customers really feel connected. A person who impact Chris’s “customer focus” success Rainmaker made by Bryant Pike, the company that built and host my website and the technology I use. I’m very biased in this particular answer because I’ve done business with these people for years, my website was hacked while it was hosted on one of the most famous American server farms in the world, and they said that “this is a WordPress problem so you are on your own” (that’s the worst customer service I ever had). So I switched to Rainmaker that has a very strong security solution, they fixed my problem in less than an hour and I never had a problem since. The one thing you are most FIRED UP about today? I have so...

Today's Business Buff Entrepreneur Chris Brogan is the CEO of Owner Media Group and New York Times bestselling author of 8 books. He also rocks the mic like no other on his podcast The Owner's Mind with Chris Brogan. Chris explores how people use media and community to build marketplaces around areas of belonging. One of his quotes from our conversation that I just absolutely love is: "In a world where you can buy from anyone, why should they buy from you?" Figure out what makes them feel like they belong and serve them. Powerful words and insights. Buff Nation, you know that it is all about serving your supporters so that they become successful through your service. His thoughts on traditional power lifting as a work out and squatting a couple hundred pounds of weight, lit my mind on fire. The idea of digging out of that hole with "You are gonna die if you do it wrong, " being a great motivator, can definitely inspire us to focus on executing our plans so that our businesses get buff. Rethink Motivation: Stories & Advice from Successful Entrepreneurs
Today’s guest is super well known in the online business space. He explores how people use content and community to build marketplaces around areas of belonging. He is CEO of Owner Media Group, a sought after public speaker, and the New York Times bestselling author of eight books and working on his ninth. Chris has spoken for or consulted with the biggest brands you know, including Disney, Coke, Google, GM, Microsoft, Coldwell Banker, Titleist, Scotts, Humana Health, Cisco, Sony USA, and many more. Belonging, Content, and Community People are throwing out content without knowing "WHY" they are doing it. No. A quote of Chris's is loaded into a robot that tweets 100 everyday and they all have @chrisbrogan. Quoting a bunch of crap because you think you are supposed to be making noise is just making noise. Links Chris Brogan Current Blog & Weekly Newsletter Sign-Up: http://www.
Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
How to Grow Your Agency with a Target Audience of One Sounds a bit crazy but today's guest, Chris Brogan, says not only should you find your niche but why you should really drill down and create a target audience of a particular person to exert your marketing efforts. Chris is CEO of Owner Media Group as well as a long-time blogger, professional speaker, author and consultant on using media and engagement to build a better marketplace. He's worked with brands like Coke, Google, Comcast, and Pepsi but he's also been consulting with smaller businesses as well. Why Focus on an “Audience of One” Target Audience When There are So Many People to Reach? “We live in a world where even a toilet knows you've left and automatically flushes but a person in the same room as you can be so absorbed in their phone they hardly notice you,” says Chris. Be the toilet. Help people feel seen and heard. To do this, identify a very specific target audience (don't worry about reaching everyone and don't worry about scaring people away). There are commonalities among individuals; find those and market to them in that way. Chris uses the example of Napa Auto Parts and Ace Hardware stores. Sure, they're in completely different industries but the common trait is that they're retailers for the Do-It-Yourself-er. The principle is the same for both - buy the parts, install them on your own. Find the similarities while treating them uniquely. And, to REALLY reach your Audience of One: DON'T try to be the next “Thought Leader”. Flooding media with streams of content streams - which usually ends up just being links to articles - doesn't help or serve anyone. Don't add to the chaos. DO find a way to inform, entertain and equip your prospective clients for success. Make them the hero in their own story. Give away your ideas and the framework. They will still come to your for implementation and adding value. Think about it - even if they have the recipe most people still prefer sitting down to be served at a restaurant. DON'T think for a minute that everyone is reading everything you put out there. They aren't able to watch your every move. (But what a great problem to have if they were!) DO feel free to recycle your content by finding a different way to present it. If you are providing value and serving your audience, it's OK to repeat yourself or explain it in a different way to reach different people. [clickToTweet tweet="3 NEW Golden Rules of Business to Know Right Now: " quote="3 NEW Golden Rules of Business to Know Right Now: "] Business is about belonging. People want to be part of something, so make your business a servant to their community. Access is the new aloofness. Be available and reach out personally. People buy from people, not from brands or businesses. Connect and serve. Community and engagement go a long way. If you can connect people to each other and provide value for both, your extension of goodwill will gain their loyalty and trust. In terms of terms of tools, Chris believes we are done with multi-billion user platforms. People are trending toward community-based platforms that serve a purpose in their corner of the world. He feels applications like Bonfire and Whatsapp, the smaller group-based community platforms, are going to the upcoming trend. Above All, Just Be You Don't try to be like the big agencies. Chris and I both agree the key to a successful business is having great relationships. Be personal, be available, and take a genuine interest in your clients and community. The big agencies may have tons of clients but that only means they can afford to tick off a few. When you're being yourself you'll attract clients who are like-minded. Working with people you would actually hang out with socially makes for smoother, seamless work. Improve Your Agency and Become a Better Agency Owner! He is also the CEO of Owner Media Group and author of the New York Times bestseller “Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation and Earn Trust.” In this episode, Chris talks to Rob about willpower, taking action, owning your success and the difference between being busy and being productive. “Your excuses will never be as interesting as the story of how you got things done,” he tells Rob. “By “owning the distance” between his fork and mouth, Chris was able to shed 60 pounds in 90 days, an experience he details in his candid book, “Just Start Here.” Chris’s moment of change came when he realized he was doing a lot of silly exercises around the gym without ever truly challenging himself. “Variety can be a killer,” he says. “If you make something really complicated, it makes it easier to hide behind excuses.” He was also in “lean-back mode” when it came to actually following through on exercise routines. “Like so many us, I used to just rip out whatever exercise routines looked good and mistake consuming information for having done something.” How did he achieve such amazing results? He started owning his health decisions the same way he owned his business decisions. “You’ve got to be in love with yourself to keep your promises,” he says. “Commitment starts with love of your self.” He continues, “If you can’t commit to yourself, it’s pretty hard to see how you’ll be able to commit to anyone else.” LINKS: ChrisBrogan.com “Just Start Here” on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Just-Start-Here-Stronger-FINALLY-ebook/dp/B00LANF6HS Chris Brogan on Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisbrogan Chris Brogan on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+ChrisBrogan Chicken Chili recipe from Lemonade restaurant mentioned by Alek: http://www.mommywarriors.com/blogs/?recipe=chicken-chili
