In the premiere episode of NHL Backstory, ESPN's Arda Öcal helps explain how a frustrated screenwriter took his love for hockey and turned it into a Disney mega-franchise. But that's only where the story starts. Within just weeks of the movie's release, the company was the proud owner of one of the NHL's newest franchises. Going deep behind the scenes, NHL Backstory talks to the key people (including Steve Brill, Jordan Kerner, Shaun Weiss, Gary Bettman, Michael Eisner, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selänne and Jack Ferreira) and discover how a movie about some mischievous hockey brats morphed into an NHL team competing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. All in a span of just over a decade.

My guest is best known for playing the role of Goldberg the Goalie in the movie franchise, “The Mighty Ducks”. We discuss his history in acting, his feelings about acting and being famous, what started his emotional decline, and much more.
Why did I want to talk with Shaun Weiss, known for his roles in The Might Ducks as Goldberg, Heavy Weights, and more? Shaun's addiction became public headlines, his mug shot appeared on the news and celebrity media outlets. With an outcry of support to get Shaun help, which included new teeth and rehab. Shaun and I converse about similar struggles that led us down the path of addiction. Shaun shares the structure he grew up in with a workaholic father and his mother being a gambling addict. He also shares that after his mother's death he crawled into an alcohol bottle for the next three years. He was eventually turning to harder drugs, with his prime DOC (drug of choice) becoming heroin. In 2019 Shaun began to turn his life around by seeking sobriety. Not only did he start to live differently, his outlook on life completely changed as well. Shaun has many daily practices such as yoga, meditation, and continual 12-step work. He has become an inspiration to so many. This is Shaun Weiss in his own words on Knockin' Doorz Down. It's 'Summer Camp Month' on Late to the Movies! Ben, Robbie, and Will start our month-long look at movies set at summer camps with 1995's Heavyweights! Directed by Steven Brill, written by Brill and Judd Apatow, and starring Ben Stiller, Tom McGowan, Aaron Schwartz, Shaun Weiss, Tom Hodges, Leah Lail, Paul Feig, Kenan Thompson, Jeffrey Tambor, Jerry Stiller, and Anne Meara.
In this episode we link up with Hollywood as actor Shaun Weiss joins us from Los Angeles! Shaun rose to fame in the 90s as a child actor when he had a starring role in The Mighty Ducks movies as Greg Goldberg, the team's tough but loveable goalkeeper. He'd acted before this but it was these movies that cemented his love for the profession, and he made friends for life who still play a big part in his story to this day. Shaun's addictions started in his early 30s after his mother died, something that absolutely devastated him. He talks to us about the day he knew that he was in for a long journey as he walked to the liquor store and heard that little voice in the back of his head - the accessibility of alcohol meant that this was the first thing he turned to, but it soon led to an addiction to other substances too. Shaun hit rock bottom, and was sitting in a jail cell when one of the deputies came in with a picture of him on his phone as one of the Mighty Ducks - and a few days later Shaun was all over the news. What happened next was extraordinary - an army of fans from 30 years ago sent Shaun their love and their support, and made him realise that there were people out there who wanted to see him do well. This moment was the start of Shaun's stunning recovery, and today he is thriving. We'd like to thank Shaun for spending an hour with us and being so honest about some extremely difficult times in his life - and as you'll hear, we're hoping to see him in a bell tent at the bottom of Snowdon soon! --- Get In Touch: Of course, you can always get in touch with us (publicly or privately) on our socials - @alcoholfreepod on Instagram, or search for "Over The Influence" on Facebook. If you were a kid growing up in the '90s or just a hockey fan in general one of your all-time favorite films on VHS had to be The Mighty Ducks. I mean the films even inspired a real-world NHL team although I don't think any team in the big league ever tried to pull off the flying v. Some have has some run-ins including Jussie Smollett who made headlines in 2019 for a faked racial attack in Chicago. Then there is the tragic tale of Shaun Weiss most remember as Goldberg. As recent as 2015 he was a YouTuber and Stand up comic and we dug up a bunch of old clips. Then things took a turn for the worse when Shaun was arrested in 2017, 2018, and 2020 for petty theft, burglary, and for being on some pretty scary substances. For the most part, most members of The Might Ducks stayed on the straight and narrow and continue to work in the entertainment industry. This includes Emilio Estevez.

But have you actually been walking your dog WRONG this whole time? According to the head of PETA, it might be true. And her main critique is stop RUSHING them. Here are four tips to make trips outside a little better for your dog . . . Realize what a big deal it is for them. Going for a walk is a major event for a dog, especially if you don't have a yard. So stop thinking of it as something you HAVE to do, and think of it as something they look forward to. Quote, "It's more than a bathroom break, it's an excursion." Give them more time to sniff stuff. You don't have to let them smell the same tree for 20 minutes. But don't constantly yank them along with you. Think of it like this. Sniffing things is your dog's way of reading the news. Be more involved, not so distracted. Dogs are smarter than we realize. And they can sense when you're not truly present with them. So don't stare at your phone the whole time. Try to be more involved in their walks. Stop walking them with just a leash and collar. A harness is better and won't hurt their neck as much. Especially when they lunge at stuff. Mike and Tommy (Kevin is in New York) breakdown Gordon Bombay's efforts as a recruiter. While he's shown an ability to find diamonds in the rough, does the fact that he had to use technicalities to gain the five-star prospect hurt him? Also, the most controversial round of trivia ever takes place. Show Notes Here's the TMZ story on Shaun Weiss' latest troubles. According to Page Six, Weiss has been sentenced to 90 days in jail. Shady move by Bombay to recruit Tommy and Tammy before talking to their parents, or slick? Let me Google those Craig James rumors for you. We talked more about Tommy and Tammy in Episode 98. Mike, Tommy, and Kevin welcome on attorney Danny to discuss the legal predicaments two Mighty Ducks stars find themselves in. Danny talks about Shaun Weiss' strange sentence, why Mike Vitar could be in some trouble despite not doing much, crimes involving pee, and therapy goats. Show Notes It's been a long road from here: Thanks to Danny for coming on and educating us. Say thanks to him on Twitter. (IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER SO NO ONE GETS SUED: Everything Danny said on the podcast was for educational purposes only and should not be taken as legal advice.) One postscript from Danny: There are indeed situations in which a person who files for bankruptcy may have their monetary punishments extinguished. Here's the full Shaun Weiss story according to TMZ. I just saw this story from Page Six today. It says Weiss began serving his jail time last Friday. (That's probably why he didn't respond to our request to come on.) Weiss' manager (not his lawyer, to correct what Mike said on the pod) is quoted as saying he hopes Shaun gets out of jail and goes to rehab. In December 2013, Weiss' ex-girlfriend obtained a temporary restraining order against him when she alleged that in April of that year he punched her in the face, chased her with a machete, and peed on her while saying, "This is all you're worth", according to TMZ. As mentioned, a judged threw the case out in January 2014. The ex-girlfriend failed to show up for the hearing. After further research, Weiss' ex did obtain a restraining order on a second attempt, restricting him from coming within 100 yards of her for five years. Here are the videos from the incident involving Mike Vitar: In the criminal case, Vitar pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery this January, according to TMZ. He was sentenced to 90 days of community service and weekly anger management classes. He was also fined $2,000 and had to pay a TBD amount to the victim. Thanks to @dreisner12 and @duncanBruins77 for a spirited round of Quack Attack Trivia. FYI: Minneapolis v. Higgins is not a real court case.
Quack! Quack! Quack! From the depths of Sean's VHS collection, wading into the open beak of the Tapeheads' increasingly unreliable VCR, comes 1992's The Mighty Ducks, starring Emilio Estevez as Gordon Bombay, the most reckless asshole to ever coach a pee-wee hockey team. Co-starring Joshua Jackson, Shaun Weiss, Lane Smith, Marguerite Moreau, and Joss Ackland as mysterious (imaginary?) hockey guru Hans (seriously, he may be a ghost in this film). D2 may be the superior movie, but we really can't say at this time.
