Planting a vineyard is a major investment, and the decisions made before the first vine goes into the ground can determine long-term success or costly failure. In this episode, Fritz sits down with renowned viticulture expert Dr. Mark Greenspan to unpack the most common red flags vineyard owners and operators should watch for when planning a new planting. Drawing on more than three decades of scientific research and hands-on field experience, Dr. Greenspan explains why many vineyard problems originate long before planting day. Fritz and Dr. Greenspan also discuss the dangers of relying on assumptions or neighboring vineyard performance instead of site-specific data and professional evaluation. Listeners will learn why thorough pre-plant assessments — including soil testing, climate analysis, and thoughtful rootstock and variety selection — are essential risk management tools rather than optional steps. This episode is especially valuable for growers considering new vineyard development, replanting existing blocks, or expanding acreage. By understanding these early warning signs, listeners can make more informed decisions, avoid expensive mistakes, and set their vineyards up for sustainable productivity and profitability. In this episode, you will hear: Common red flags that signal potential vineyard failure before planting Why site-specific soil and climate data matter more than assumptions Risks of poor variety and rootstock selection The long-term cost of cutting corners during vineyard planning Practical steps to reduce risk and improve vineyard performance Follow and Review: If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to follow the podcast and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts! What you need in your life is not less authority, but good authority. We live in an age that's deeply suspicious of authority. Yet every human being lives under authority of some kind; whether it's our own desires, cultural pressures, or destructive forces beyond our control. In this sermon, we explore the truth that what we need is not less authority in our lives, but good authority — and Jesus is the King whose authority brings peace, not oppression.

Wanting to Believe: Re-Enrolling Each Other Into What's Possible This episode came out of a conversation Chris had this week — and it hit him so clearly that he realized he and Melissa had never talked about it publicly before. They've shared openly about the hard seasons in their marriage. They've taught frameworks for having honest, productive conversations about what isn't working. But in this episode, they talk about the missing piece that made all the difference when their marriage was at its lowest: They started talking about what they wanted to create — before there was any evidence it was possible. Chris shares how a couple he was advising had been doing "everything right" — having authentic conversations, communicating well, addressing issues — yet still felt stuck. And the realization was simple, but profound: they were only talking about what was broken… not what they believed could exist on the other side. Melissa takes the conversation deeper, sharing a moment from their own marriage when there was absolutely no evidence that things would improve. No proof. No results. No momentum. And yet, she chose to hold onto something smaller, but powerful: the desire to believe a miracle could happen. They talk about faith — not as certainty, but as willingness. Wanting to believe, even when belief feels impossible. And how that willingness created the foundation for real change. Throughout the episode, Chris and Melissa reflect on how repeatedly re-enrolling each other into a shared vision — "I want to be married to you. I want our marriage to be amazing. I believe we can create something beautiful together." — slowly shifted the trajectory of their relationship. This isn't about ignoring what's not working. It's about balancing honest conversations with intentional vision-casting. Because if the only seeds you plant are about what you don't want, that's exactly what keeps growing. If your marriage feels stuck… if you're tired… if belief feels hard — this episode is an invitation to start where they did: You don't have to fully believe. You just have to be willing to want to. Therefore, we need to make sure we plant low chill fruit trees. What are the three non-negotiables when buying fruit trees for the low desert?Choose low-chill varieties, ensure the correct rootstock for desert conditions, and select soft-flesh fruit that ripens before July 1.What are the most common ways people accidentally kill fruit trees?Planting in hot microclimates, allowing grass to compete with roots, and relying on shallow daily drip irrigation. How should fruit trees actually be watered in the desert?Deep, infrequent watering—about once a month in winter and every 10–14 days in summer—allowing soil to dry between waterings. Why are bare root trees preferred for deciduous fruit? They're planted while dormant, establish faster, and adapt better long-term than potted trees when planted correctly. How long does it take for a fruit tree to really produce?Year one focuses on roots, year two on shoots, year three begins fruiting, and years four to five bring full production.Episode HighlightsFruit trees thrive when planted for climate, not convenienceCitrus can be harvested across six months with smart variety selectionThe Six-Six Basin Rule dramatically improves survival and growthDesert soil must be rebuilt with organic matter and biologyOverwatering and under watering look the same—but both can kill treesBare root planting in January sets trees up for lifelong successA single well-planted tree can produce for 50–100 yearsCalls to Action & ResourcesUrban Farm Fruit Tree Program — https://www.fruittrees.orgFree Desert Fruit Tree Master Course — https://www.fruittrees.orgQuestions or tree photos...

Hello hello — I'm Danielle Ireland, and you're catching an episode of Don't Cut Your Own Bangs, the cozy corner of the internet where we answer the timeless question: Do I really want bangs… or do I just need to talk about my feelings? (Spoiler: it's often the feelings. And also sometimes bangs. We can be multidimensional.) In today's episode, we're talking about planting good seeds — not the aggressive "new year, new you, fix your entire personality by Tuesday" energy, but the soft, intentional, nervous-system-friendly kind of reset. Because if January were in charge of its own PR? It would be branded as recovery + reflection + gentle reorientation, not a monthly audition for your worthiness. We use a seed metaphor (because nature gets it), talk about rest as a generative space, and explore why the opposite of anxiety isn't necessarily calm… it might actually be creativity. I also share a very humbling moment at acupuncture where my body had a lot to say and I hadn't been listening. In this episode, we talk about: Why the beginning of the year is a great time to set intentions, not punish yourself with "perfect" Rest as resistance (and why your body is not a machine) The surprising idea: the opposite of anxiety is creativity Micro-rest: how to make space for yourself even in a busy life The 4 questions that can reveal where you've lost your spark: When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop feeling enchanted by stories? When did you stop sitting in stillness? How breadcrumbs (like a screenshot of a dance class) can lead you back to yourself A gentle reminder: you are the expert in you — advice is useful, but you're not required to outsource your inner knowing A couple quotes from the episode: "Plant the seed… and then leave it alone. Give it the space and grace it needs to thrive." "Rest is a generative space. There is information for your healing in the dream space." "The opposite of anxiety is not calm — it's creativity." "Knowing something and doing something are not the same." (…my acupuncture appointment would like to cosign this.) Gentle invitation for the week: Pick one small "good seed" to plant — a tiny act of rest, wonder, play, or creativity — and let it be enough. With Jesus, no one is unclean, unworthy, or unseen. The insecurities we carry about ourselves often hinder us from coming to Jesus. We feel unclean because of our shame, unworthy because of our sin, or unseen because of our story. As a result, we hide in obscurity or shrink back in fear. But as Matthew tells us of Jesus cleansing a leper, healing a centurion's servant, and healing Peter's mother-in-law, he reveals that with Jesus, no one is unclean, unworthy, or unseen.

Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Saint André Bessette Saint André Bessette's Story Saint André Bessette expressed a saint's faith by a lifelong devotion to Saint Joseph. Sickness and weakness dogged André from birth. He was the eighth of 12 children born to a French Canadian couple near Montreal. Adopted at 12, when both parents had died, he became a farmhand. Various trades followed: shoemaker, baker, blacksmith—all failures. He was a factory worker in the United States during the boom times of the Civil War. At 25, Saint André Bessette applied for entrance into the Congregation of Holy Cross. After a year's novitiate, he was not admitted because of his weak health. But with an extension and the urging of Bishop Bourget, he was finally received. He was given the humble job of doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal, with additional duties as sacristan, laundry worker and messenger. “When I joined this community, the superiors showed me the door, and I remained 40 years,” he said. In his little room near the door, he spent much of the night on his knees. On his windowsill, facing Mount Royal, was a small statue of Saint Joseph, to whom he had been devoted since childhood. When asked about it he said, “Some day, Saint Joseph is going to be honored in a very special way on Mount Royal!” When he heard someone was ill, he visited to bring cheer and to pray with the sick person. He would rub the sick person lightly with oil taken from a lamp burning in the college chapel. Word of healing powers began to spread. When an epidemic broke out at a nearby college, André volunteered to nurse. Not one person died. The trickle of sick people to his door became a flood. His superiors were uneasy; diocesan authorities were suspicious; doctors called him a quack. “I do not cure,” he said again and again. “Saint Joseph cures.” In the end he needed four secretaries to handle the 80,000 letters he received each year. For many years the Holy Cross authorities had tried to buy land on Mount Royal. Brother André and others climbed the steep hill and planted medals of Saint Joseph. Suddenly, the owners yielded. Saint André Bessette collected $200 to build a small chapel and began receiving visitors there—smiling through long hours of listening, applying Saint Joseph's oil. Some were cured, some not. The pile of crutches, canes and braces grew. The chapel also grew. By 1931, there were gleaming walls, but money ran out. “Put a statue of Saint Joseph in the middle. If he wants a roof over his head, he'll get it.” The magnificent Oratory on Mount Royal took 50 years to build. The sickly boy who could not hold a job died at 92. Saint André Bessette is buried at the Oratory. He was beatified in 1982 and canonized in 2010. At his canonization in October 2010, Pope Benedict XVI said that Saint Andre “lived the beatitude of the pure of heart.” Reflection Rubbing ailing limbs with oil or a medal? Planting a medal to buy land? Isn't this superstition? Aren't we long past that superstitious people rely only on the “magic” of a word or action. Brother André's oil and medals were authentic sacramentals of a simple, total faith in the Father who lets his saints help him bless his children.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
