The critically acclaimed drama "TOLL”  from rising star filmmaker Carolina Markowicz (“Charcoal,” “The Orphan”) premiers in the US this week! As a filmmaker, Carolina focuses on work that is in tune with the current political climate. The things that have happened in Brazil recently have been unimaginable to the filmmaker in many ways.  Brazil is a very conservative and homophobic society, where a minister of human rights, now a senator, stated that kids shouldn't play with Frozen dolls because the character of Elsa was a lesbian. In the film TOLL, the main character, a toll booth attendant, realizes she can use her job to raise some extra money illegally. But this is only for a so-called noble cause: to send her son to an expensive gay conversion workshop led by a renowned foreign priest. The film is is a drama permeated with dark, irreverent humor.  We talk to Carolina today, along with film star Maeve Jinkings, about the film. She has written and directed 6 short films, which were selected for more than 300 festivals and the recipients of many awards.  The Orphan , her most recognized film, premiered in Cannes Director's Fortnight in 2018 and won the Queer Palm. Her debut feature, Charcoal, premiered in competition at Toronto International Film Festival and made its European Premiere at San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2022. Maeve is an award winning actress born in Brasilia. With Co-host Brody Levesque

Turn on the AC and pour yourself a cold drink because things are about to get hot and muggy on the podcast. This week we're talking about Joyland (2022), a Pakistani film about a family living in Lahore. In the movie, Haider (Ali Junejo) escapes the demands of his family through an affair with Biba (Alina Khan), a transgender woman/his boss at an erotic dance revue. Haider stumbles into his job as a dancer, just as he stumbles through the rest of his life. But has he found his calling as a background dancer? No. Can he at least get the choreo down? No. Directed by Siam Sadiq, the movie won the Jury Prize and Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival before being shortlisted for Best International Feature Film at 95th Academy Awards. Does it live up to the hype? Join us to find out. And we're continuing our miniseries on the Criterion Channel's LGBTQ+ shorts collection. After a quick glance at the painfully earnest Blood Below the Skin (dir. Jennifer Reeder, 2016), we take a deep dive into Marin Håskjold's What Is A Woman? (2020), a thought experiment about a transgender woman who becomes a lightening rod for a couple of Norwegian Kårens when she enters a women's locker room.

The film Joyland is set in Lahore and tells the story of Haider, a married man who falls in love with the transgender dancer Biba. It's the first Pakistani film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and it won the Jury Prize as well as the Queer Palm prize. It has also been selected as the Pakistani entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. Despite having a standing ovation at Cannes, the film has had a more controversial reaction in Pakistan itself. Originally cleared for release, that decision was then overturned. However the film is now out in cinemas in Pakistan, although remains banned in the Punjab. Tina Daheley speaks to Joyland's writer and director Saim Sadiq and film critic Kamran Jawaid. Brazilian director and screenwriter Gabriel Martins took inspiration from his own childhood experience when he made his new film Mars One. It tells the story of a working-class Black Brazilian family adjusting to life after the election of President Jair Bolsanaro. Like Joyland, it has also been selected as its country's submission for Best International Feature Film at the next Academy Awards. Lone Scherfig is a Danish film-maker best known for her romantic comedies including An Education and One Day. She talks about the film that changed her - Austrian director Michael Haneke's 2009 German-language film The White Ribbon. It is a movie with a troubling message about the history of Europe and one that inspires her to ask big, important questions in her own work. (Photo: A still from Joyland. Credit: Studio Soho)

Here we go! ///// > ///// Hi, Philly Film Fan here with another review for One Movie Punch. You can follow me on Twitter @PhillyFilmFan. Today’s movie is PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE(2019), the 18th century French drama written and directed by Céline Sciamma. I wasn’t able to catch PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE when it played the Philadelphia Film Festival but I’m delighted to be catching up with it now. No spoilers. Since its debut at Cannes, where it won Best Screenplay and a Queer Palm, PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE has continued to rack up awards, nominations, and accolades, including Best Foreign Language nominations at the Golden Globes and BAFTAS. It was also nominated for 10 Césars (France’s equivalent to an Oscar) but only managed one win for cinematography. The top prize went to LES MISÉRABLES (Episode #680) and if you’d like to hear my review of that film, check out episode 680 of One Movie Punch. But the big headline from this year’s César Awards was definitely the announcement of Roman Polanski’s win for best director, immediately followed by Adèle Haenel leading the entire PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE team as they walked out of the theater in protest. Haenel has been an outspoken critic of the French film industry’s tepid response to the #MeToo movement and Roman Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year-old child. You might be wondering: What is wrong with the people in charge of the César Awards? And while we don’t have time to get into that now, I can tell you that the entire board of directors resigned a month ago. PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE begins on a rowboat, with Marianne (Noémie Merlant) making a journey to a small island off the coast of Brittany in France. Marianne is an artist and she has been commissioned to paint a portrait of Héloïse, played by the aforementioned Adèle Haenel. But when Marianne arrives she discovers that Héloïse refuses to sit for a portrait, and that Marianne must pretend to be Héloïse’s companion, in order to observe her, then retire to her room to paint Héloïse’s face by memory. This is all necessary to marry Héloïse off to a Milanese nobleman, a scheme concocted by Héloïse’s mother, La Comtesse (Valeria Golino)... you know, from HOT SHOTS! ...and BIG TOP PEE-WEE! ...and HOT SHOTS PART DEUX! The relationship between Marianne and Héloïse is central to PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE. Héloïse is a member of the nobility, but her privilege comes at a price. She is treated by her mother like a helpless child, and is not even permitted to go for a walk unsupervised. Héloïse’s entire life has been mapped out for her, and she must marry a man she has never even met because it is her duty to strengthen her family’s position. Marianne, on the other hand, is a woman of modest means, but she has the freedom to pursue her career as an artist. This job requires her to closely observe Héloïse, so that she can capture her essence on canvas. Héloïse is accustomed to being watched by the help, but before Marianne arrived she had never really been seen. As the two get to know each other, an intimacy develops between them and here, on this sparsely inhabited island, practically at the ends of the earth, they create a space where they feel like the only two souls in the world. PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE is a gorgeously photographed film about two women forming an intense bond. And, like all the best romances, it is tinged with the sadness of knowing that our time here is limited, and that all things must come to an end. But melancholy is a much deeper emotion than happiness could ever be. Rotten Tomatoes: 98% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 95 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 9.0/10 PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (2019) is rated Rand is currently playing in theaters. With PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, Céline Sciamma became the first woman director to win the Queer Palm at Cannes, an embarrassingly belated milestone reminiscent of Jane Campion becoming the first woman director to win the Palme d’Or in 1993 with THE PIANO. And while these two films have much more in common than their directors’ gender, as we discover when we put them in conversation this week, both Sciamma and Campion bring a distinct point of view to their respective stories of repressed desire in repressed times that feels inextricably tied to ideas about womanhood and an oppressive patriarchy. We get into how that point of view colors the two films in their expression of desire and consent, the artistic gaze, and the function of myth and legend. Celine Sciamma joins hosts Eric Newman and Medaya Ocher to discuss her film Portrait of a Woman on Fire, which was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes and won this year's Queer Palm at Cannes. Set in the 18th Century, the film is about the growing desire between a woman painter and her subject, a young woman about to marry a nobleman. The central action takes place on an island in which the men all-but-disappear. Claire discusses how she rejects the established ways that women, women's bodies, their desire, and their sexuality are traditionally represented in cinema; and how she seeks to develop a new feminist approach to such representation, one which lends itself to new forms of dramatic tension and groundbreaking cinematography. Celine also addresses the struggles of women directors in France and their even greater marginalization in America; and what can be done to remedy this injustice. Also, Amanda Yates Garcia, author of Initiated: Memior of a Witch, returns to recommend Ariana Reines' transcendent poetry in A Sand Book.
