This is a difficult artistic puzzle to sort out: a) Why is this, Doris Day's signature song, the only cover that Sly ever recorded?; and, b), Is its delivery of “cheerful fatalism” a positive or a negative? The motto, cribbed by song writers Jay Livingston and Ray Evans for the Hitchcock film THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, from another film THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA, has a rich history of memento mori application going back centuries, and yet, here it appears in a fresh, compelling funk version for the modern era. It's a brain teaser. For me it's all positive, albeit bittersweet. The young woman, voiced by Sly's sister Rose, asks her mother and lover to allay her apprehensions about the future, and Sly, taking the lead on the response, bursts into an ecstatic response: “Whatever will be, will be…” which turns the angsty inquiry on its head. BE HERE NOW, is the imperative. The future will take care of itself.

The ABF is a premier business platform dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals in the small and medium enterprise sector seeking to start, expand or transition their business domestically or across the Asian markets. Ray sees the electric vehicle market as a wonderful opportunity for those businesses his group represents. We'll also dig into Evans' advisory board, a group of fellow business leaders who meet quarterly to counsel Evans and each other. Australian music legend Michael Gudinski has died, aged 68. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Melbourne on Monday night. The co-founder of Mushroom Records and the chairman of the sprawling Mushroom Group of Companies that it spawned, Gudinski got his start in the music business as a dancehall promoter in his teens. Legend has it that in 1967, aged just 15, he was making $500 a week booking bands including The Aztecs and Chain. With cash flow like that, it was little wonder he dropped out of high school in his final year to go into the business full time. After founding Mushroom Records with Ray Evans in 1972, Gudinski, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, rose to become one of the most significant and powerful players in the local music scene. He was a label boss, live music promoter, promoter of electronic dance music, music publisher, film and television producer, racehorse owner – winning, as part of a syndicate, two Melbourne Cups, with Almandin in 2016 and Rekindling in 2017. Above all, though, he was a high-profile advocate for Australian music. Gudinski worked tirelessly during the pandemic to make the case for support of the live music industry. He partnered with the Victorian state government on a number of initiatives designed to create opportunities for musicians to play live, either virtually or in person, in the face of the shutdowns that devastated the sector in 2020. TMN understands he passed away overnight Monday, just weeks before he was to announce a major project with the Victorian Government to bolster the state's music industry. Talking of his passion for Australian music, he once said: “The talent was always here but the industry was a cottage industry. “It was very frustrating because, at the time, Australians always thought anything that came from overseas – whether it was music, cars or fashion designs – was better.” Gudinski was a pioneer in many ways, including the number of women he employed in senior roles, or signing First Nations acts before they were accepted by the wider music community. Last year when the live industry shuttered, within a weekend, Gudinski moved his operations to create TV shows The Sound and State Of Play, to keep local live acts in front of audiences. In 2006 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Music industry accolades included an ARIA Award for Special Achievement (1992), APRA's Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music (1998), the inaugural ARIA Industry Icon (2013) and being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Music Victoria Awards of 2013. Foxtel will screen Michael Gudinski – My Story on Tuesday, March 23, the day before the Victorian state memorial service for the music industry great. Thanks for listening! It's episode 200! Hurrah.  Dominic Kelly is a political historian and Honorary Research Fellow at La Trobe University. His 2019 book Political Troglodytes and Economic Lunatics: The Hard Right in Australia examines the activities and influence of four Australian right-wing single-issue advocacy groups: the H.R. Nicholls Society (focussed on industrial relations), the Samuel Griffiths Society (constitutional issues and federalism), the Bennelong Society (Indigenous issues) and the Lavoisier Group (climate change). All four groups were created and steered by three central figures: mining executive Hugh Morgan, his speechwriter Ray Evans and former public servant John Stone. It's a fascinating and (blackly) amusing history.  Here Dominic lays out just how far these four societies have pulled Australia to the right over the past thirty years, what the Left can learn from them and what it shows us about the role that mining interests play in Australian politics.  If you’ve got the means please support this show by becoming a Patron Join the LIASYO Facebook group here please and thank you I was recently on another episode of The Little Dum Dum Club alongside the very funny Nick Capper Join me online in conversation with Melissa Davey discussing her book The Case of George Pell on Tuesday August 18th @dominickelly_ Buy Political Troglodytes and Economic Lunatics on Black Inc. Dragons in the CloudsbyDavid BlairReview by Barry BoyDragons in the Clouds is a well-edited novel in the third person in the genre of historical fiction or fantasy and is aimed at young teenagers. The story of Dragons in the Clouds is actually set in in two epochs and on two continents. The main characters in the present day setting of the United States are Ray Evans and his young daughter, Reilly; and at some unspecified time in the distant past, in the kingdom of Albion, we meet King Arturus, Merlinius, Sir Solomon, David and his pet baby dragon, Rago. It is difficult to say who or what is the main protagonist of them. The story takes the form of Ray Evans recounting to his daughter a legend told to him by the elderly owner of a toy shop he met on his latest business tip to London. Mr Evans meets him when he goes in to purchase a toy dragon that he sees in the shop window. The Kingdom of AlbionThe main body of Dragons in the Clouds is set in the ancient Kingdom of Albion, which seems to be somewhere in Europe, but that is not explicit. The king of Albion, Arturus, is worried by public unrest caused by his people's fear of the dragons living in the land. In actual fact, there are two species of dragons: the carnivores and the herbivores. However, most people cannot distinguish between the two types and so fear them all.In an attempt to garner favour and quell the unrest, Arturus sets his royal knights, led by Sir Solomon, the task of exterminating all the dragons in the country. Without wishing to give too much away, some people find this grossly unfair, and set about trying to save the harmless plant-eaters, which leads to all kinds of battles between humans and humans, dragons and dragons and even humans and dragons.Thunder and LighteningThese exciting battles lead to the main theme of the Dragons in the Clouds, which is how thunder and lightening came into existence.Although Dragons in the Clouds by David Blair is aimed at a readership much younger than myself, I enjoyed the story and am certain that ten-twelve years olds will love it's unique plot and story-line. If I have a criticism, it is a small, personal one: I prefer not to see famous names from history and mythology used in this way, as it could blur the original stories (as Disney often has). The cover and the title are completely appropriate to the body of the story and I give Dragons in the Clouds by David Blair five out of five stars! Our unique interview with author David Blair can be found here: David BlairPodcast: Dragons in the Clouds

Episode 27 — Christmas Songs that ROCK We're trying something new in this podcast, folks. As Christmas approaches, we're highlighting some of the Rock and Roll Christmas songs we've heard over the years. From the sublime to the slightly corny, covers to originals, Rock music has lent its voice to the Advent season. Join us this week as we review some of the classics and deeper cuts that have made for a Rock and Roll Christmas season. Bing Crosby and David Bowie - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy This song was featured in September of 1977 for "Bing Crosby's Merry Old Christmas," which would be the last of Crosby's Christmas specials. It was surreal to see the glam rock Bowie paired with American icon Crosby in this inter-generational duet. Bowie balked at performing "The Little Drummer Boy," and so creators Ian Fraser,Larry Grossman, and Alan Kohan added the "Peace on Earth" counterpoint. Twisted Sister - O Come All Ye Faithful Not exactly a classic of the genre here. Twisted Sister simply puts the words to “O Come All Ye Faithful,” with the music from their well known classic “We're Not Gonna Take It.” Cheap Trick - I Want You for Christmas Here's Cheap Trick's take on Christmas, just taking their hit "I Want You To Want Me" and converting it to a Christmas song. Not original, not a lot of staying power, but if you prefer your Christmas tunes to have a certain lounge lizard appeal, this may be what you're looking for. Chuck Berry (and Lemmy) - Rudolph Run From 1958, Berry takes his turn at a Christmas song which has become a standard over time. This tune was very similar to his hit “Johnny B. Goode.” Also featured is the 2008 remake by Lemmy Kilmister (of Motorhead fame), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), and Dave Grohl (Nirvana) in a distinctly crunchier take on the compilation “We Wish You a Metal Christmas.” Elvis Presley - Silver Bells Jay Livingston and Ray Evans wrote this song which was originally performed by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in the movie “The Lemondrop Kid” in 1950. Presley covered this song in 1971 for his Christmas album at the height of his comeback era. Presley never performed outside the United States. The Kinks - Father Christmas From 1977, this original song tells the story of a department store Santa who gets beat up by some poor kids looking for money. Over time this has become a classic Rock Christmas song, covered by a number of artists. You'll hear this tune on "That 70's Show" and "Bob's Burgers." Queen - Thank God It's Christmas Another original song from 1984, this song was on the UK charts for 6 weeks. Da Surfones - Waikiki Christmas It's not the Beach Boys, but close. Because who needs a White Christmas? Suddenly, Tammy! - Rock 'n Roll Santa Claus Alright folks, listen to this tune and see how many snippets you can identify. Gary Walker and the Boogie Kings - Santa's Got a Brand New Bag And, this is not James Brown. Another Christmas take on a prior hit, this time it's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" James Brown - Santa Go Straight to the Ghetto The Godfather of Soul has to get into the Christmas spirit. Run D.M.C. - Christmas in Hollis From 1987, this song was played in the 1988 (arguably) Christmas movie “Die Hard.” James Slater - All I Want from Santa (is a girl from Atlanta) This was a big hit in metro-Atlanta when it came out in 1983. Slater wrote this song for an upcoming gig in Atlanta, and it got solid air play on 96 Rock (WKLS) at this time. The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping I know what boys like...for Christmas, perhaps. This Ohio group has another hit on their hands for the holidays. Greg Lake — I believe in Father Christmas They said there'd be snow at Christmas, they said there'd be peace on Earth. The instrumental riff is from the "Troika" portion Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije" Bob and Doug McKinsey - The Twelve Days of Christmas Our friends from SCTV and the Great White North close out the podcast with this comedy track from 1981.
