Growth Comes By Ending Something So You Can Begin Something New

Leaning Toward Wisdom

“You only grow by coming to the end of something and by beginning something else.” ― John Irving, The World According to Garp It's time to say goodbye! Only to The Yellow Studio 2.0. It's officially over. Done. Next week I'll be getting The Yellow Studio 3.0 set up. Version 3.0 will be a transition studio that I hope will take me through the end of 2023. After that, I'm planning to settle into The Yellow Studio 4.0. Around 1999 The Yellow Studio 1.0 was born, dubbed with that name because I wanted the walls painted this yellow color. Bright. Sunshiney. Cheerful. That was the goal. And it worked. Especially after I invested in four Ballard Street prints. They worked well with a yellow background. Truth is, everything worked well with the yellow walls as a background. Over more than 2 decades every "podcast" episode - save those done from the field - was produced right here from inside this yellow room. Except for the first audio files that I uploaded to the Internet, 100% of my podcasts have emanated from The Yellow Studio. A few friends have inquired, "Are you gonna miss it?" No, not really. I'm sentimental so I'm leaving with fond memories. The countless hours spent - especially in the nighttime hours when sleep evades me - listening to music, writing, reading, researching, studying, recording, coaching, conversing with friends (in person or online)...an awful lot of life has happened in this room. I'm thankful for all of it, but it's time to turn the page and start creating a new chapter. Time for a new beginning. That excites me. Version 3.0 will not be yellow, but The Yellow Studio has grown to represent more than a color. It's optimism. Positive vides. Wisdom. Insights. Experiences. It's figuring things out. Learning from mistakes. Always improving! Those things matter more than the color of the walls. But I do love the color. And I will miss that a lot. What I won't miss is this moving business. Talk about a whipping! I enjoyed the hard work of purging, but boxing up 45 years of your life together - even post purge - is a ridiculous amount of work. Rhonda has been diligently packing the most tedious items like china, glassware and lots of breakable stuff. Additionally, she's had to box up her sewing room, which has been daunting because of the sheer volume of things she needs to keep. Thankfully, during the transition she'll continue to have some needed space for her craft. Just today I told her, "I'm sure glad podcasting isn't as space intensive as your passion." ;) I don't plan on skipping more than a beat or two during this move so be patient. I'll try to get back in the groove was soon as I can. The old "broadcast table" of Version 1.0 and 2.0 is gone! The old Heil Audio boom arms, which have served me so well for 20 years, gone! They've been creaky for awhile now so it's past time to retire them. The original Toshiba 43" flat panel TV hanging in the studio stayed in the studio, proudly owned by new masters. The original Rode Rodecaster Pro that YOU helped me get...not quite gone, but it will be soon. It's pristine and I'll be selling it to help defray the investment I've already made into the newer Rode Rodecaster Pro 2. Boxed up, but not going away - except for the rest of 2023 - are the Ballard Street prints, the ladies that welcomed folks inside The Yellow Studio, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum - and the dragons and other figurines that populated the studio. These things are going to be safely stowed away in the location of The Yellow Studio 4.0. They'll just remain boxed, safely stored in the comfortable warmth of bubblewrap. ;) The new studio will have a brand new 62" long desk, on casters. That'll be a first and I'm looking forward to the prospect of moving the studio around as I want. Maybe I won't move it around much at all. But it's nice knowing I can. The new studio will have a brand new chair. I sold my Herman Miller Mirra chair because the armrests are aw...

Marie: My Maternal Grandmother Oatmeal Cookie Recipe By Re Bessie Marie Burns was born April 8, 1906, near Sulphur, Oklahoma. She died on February 2, 1982, in Ada, Oklahoma. She despised her first name. Everybody called her Marie, but anybody who really knew her called her, "Re." I just registered ResRetreat.com - there'd be an apostrophe if the Internet allowed them. It's Re's Retreat. I've been dreaming, conniving, and planning for almost 3 years. I'm still working the controls as deftly as possible to land the plane, but I see the airport. The tower hasn't yet instructed me to land. I don't yet have an assigned runway, but I'm optimistic. And hoping I can land before I run out of fuel. About 4 years ago we booked an Airbnb reservation to a place we had never been. It looked like our kind of place. Lots of trees, mountainous, walking trails, wildlife, serene, quiet. Woods. I love woods. Best of all, it was just one state away, a 5-hour drive. Now, four years later, and multiple trips - and a year of podcasting about the place (HSVInsideOut.com) we're leaning toward making another investment in the place - and in our future. Three or four years of dreaming. And scheming. To make something happen. Time will tell if we can succeed with our plan. And land this plane. Podcasting From Inside The Yellow Studio It started in 2000 with version 1.0. In 2019, thanks to the addition of the Rode Rodecaster Pro - which was made possible by the listeners of Leaning Toward Wisdom during Project: Craving Encouragement - version 2.0 was born. That's still the version in use for today's show, but I'm planning to make dramatic changes - Version 3.0. I'm not exactly sure what it'll look like, but I have some very solid ideas. It's going to be less of a specific place and more of a here's-where-I'm-at kind of a place. Our Encore Chapter: Writing It The Way We Hope Is Best There are three priorities in our story writing: spiritual (which includes emotional and mental well-being), financial, and family. They're all intertwined. Spiritual is number one because eternity changes everything! There are no dead atheists. Every atheist who dies quickly realizes God is real. And Heaven and Hell are, too. If you want to read a glimpse of life after this one, read the story in Luke. Luke 16:19-31 New King James Version The Rich Man and Lazarus “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and [a]fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.' “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.' ” Financial isn't about building wealth,

The first real studio tour I did Inside The Yellow Studio was more than a decade in. It was 2015. At that point, I'd been laying down audio tracks online for years. Then when you guys helped me get the new (at the time) Rode Rodecaster Pro in 2019, I did a new tour. Click here to see and listen to that. I won't rehash history because you can go back and dive as deeply as you'd like. Or not all at. The broadcast workflow has always been how I've rolled. That is, I prepare in advance, then I hit RECORD, and mostly, I'm done. It's finished. My editing is pre-recording editing. It's a broadcast workflow because that's how live broadcasts work. There are no do-overs. It's out and done. Foibles and all. That workflow was the genesis of The Yellow Studio version 1.0. It consisted of a sizable rack of gear, which I loved. It wasn't cheap, but my sound was consistently great - whether I was on a Skype call or recording an audio or video. Because all the sound was produced in real-time through all the hardware I had. Software is a much cheaper route to go, but you have to incorporate a recording workflow, not a broadcast one. That means, you record, then you process the file and fool with things after-the-fact. No thanks! In 2019 the Rodecaster Pro ushered in The Yellow Studio Version 2.0. I ditched the full rack of equipment, replacing every bit of it with one device - the Rode Rodecaster Pro. It was a big shift - and improvement in the signal chain. Not just because the Rodecaster Pro is such a great device, but because all the cabling changed and became very straightforward. Now I was able to use shorter run XLR cables directly from the microphones to the Rode. No more going into the vocal strip (mic preamps), then into another processor, then into an interface...gone was the spaghetti of wires Inside The Yellow Studio. It was wonderful and the studio became so much nicer for me! Thanks to many of you who contributed money to help me buy the Rode! The Yellow Studio is soon going to go away. Well, more accurately, Version 2.0 is going away. Not because of the new Rodecaster Pro 2, which I hope to get soon, but because I'm physically moving. Yep, moving! Lord willing, Rhonda and I will be finding some new digs where I'll have to erect The Yellow Studio Version 3.0. I can't yet tell you the details because I don't know them, but I'll figure it out. Lord willing, The Yellow Studio Version 3.0 will include the new Rode Rodecaster Pro 2, but we'll see how it goes. Otherwise, I have no other hardware changes planned. At some point, I'll migrate to an Apple laptop and give up the 27" Apple iMac (circa 2017). I'll keep a big monitor, but I'm going to shift to greater mobility so a laptop will be vital. Some Things That Will Be Different In Version 3.0 No books. Okay, fewer books. So few they won't likely matter. The Yellow Studio Versions 1.0 and 2.0 had eight (8) bookcases full of books. And knick-knacks. Oh, the knick-knacks will remain! ;) Let it never be said I didn't have my priorities straight. About 4 of those bookcases were filled with religious or "church" books. Bible commentaries and other books that I've spent my life collecting. And reading and studying. In my now "not so famous" document, When I Die...I had always written down that my son would get the entire library. Well, in my efforts to purge about 80% of my personal possessions, I asked him if he wanted them now. I only had 2 requests: a) make sure our immediate family, including the grandkids, have access to them and b) that includes me! He agreed so he'll be getting about half of the books. The other half of the library consists of secular books, mostly business and biographies. I plan to keep about 3 shelves of those and donate all the rest! My life hasn't had this few books since I was a teenager. But I don't mind. It's quite liberating actually. I've already worked through the emotions and depression about it. ;) No CD rack.

It’s time for another rousing edition of The Acc and Jack Show! Jack is the proud owner of a Rode Rodecaster Pro, and he’s “Rode”-testing it during this episode. Enjoy him trying to figure out how to use it during a live recording. In the first half of this episode, finding inspiration in Danielle Murr’s podcast I’ll Have One of Everything, Jack ponders if he has ADHD. He comes into this episode armed with results from multiple self-assessments, all suggesting he has the attention span of a gnat. On that note, Acc and Jack discuss their reluctance to disclose to their respective doctors ailments, be them physical or mental. Elsewhere, Jack brings up the recent shootings that happened in Atlanta and Boulder, CO, respectively. Jack loathes that some are calling these acts “a return to normal,” given the easing of COVID-related restrictions across the country. Acc weighs in with his thoughts on gun control, and what attempts – if any – politicians are making to curb future acts. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hardlyfocused/support

Jim Collison Today's Project #CravingEncouragement story comes from Jim Collison. Find him at The Average Guy website. Thanks, Jim for the encouragement, friendship, and support. Jim was one of the very first financial contributors to helping me get the Rode Rodecaster Pro here inside The Yellow Studio. You'll hear Jim's stories at the very end of the episode.   "Old men are dangerous: it doesn't matter to them what is going to happen to the world."        - George Bernard Shaw But old men are dangerous for so much more. It's not that old men don't care, it's that they've learned what to care about most. Experience has taught them what matters and what's irrelevant. Old men are dangerous because they're able to teach younger men the things they most need to know. Nobody can teach younger men more than old men. if only younger men would listen and learn. ;) 2019 has been a year focused on the old men in my life. In the spring I lost one. Others are growing weak and frail. Old men have always been very important to me. I've lot a handful of them over the years. Old men who taught me a lot, but I know there was so much more I could have and should have learned. Old men aren't likely so different from old women. Not when it comes to the resource they are for those who are younger. Younger is relative. Earlier this year I lost an old man in my life. He was 74. Meanwhile, there's another old man in my life who is 96 and still going. My dad. That's a 22-year spread and it makes me wonder when a guy goes from being a young man to a man, then goes to being an old man. To a 10-year-old boy, a 25-year-old is likely an old man. To a 25-year-old, a 50-year-old is for sure an old man. To the 50-year-old...well, old just takes on a very different connotation. Narrowing down the when is important. After all, old men are dangerous so we have to figure out who the old men are! ;) I'll leave that to you to figure out for yourself. I happen to think old women are just as dangerous as old men. If not MORE so. ;) So I don't discriminate. I'm equally fearful. Being dangerous isn't restricted to being fearful though. There's dangerous in a good way. Sorta like the word "bad." Then there's dangerous in a terrible way. As in, "That concert was bad." That means the concert was awful. It can be good. As in, "That concert was bad." That means the concert was awesome. Let's talk about the fearful. I grew up learning fear very quickly. Spanking was how all good kids were brought up. Not beatings. Not abuse. Spankings. I don't think it was a regional practice either. Rather, I think it was pretty universal born from years of practice sparked by Old Testament (and New Testament) teaching on discipline. "Spare the rod, spoil the child," and all that. It clearly was a defective form of discipline and training because most of the kids I knew addressed adults as "sir" or "ma'am." Classrooms were mostly well ordered and teachers, policemen and other authority figures were shown respect by all but the very worst kids. So it was clearly NOT the way to raise and train children. I mean it's barbaric really. Better to have every child behaving like a spoiled hellion, smarting off to teachers, flipping off police officers and general showing disdain for anybody who dare suggest he not get his way. Society is greatly improved by our intolerance for any kind of physical discipline to show kids that they are NOT in charge. After all, the kids ARE in charge so let's treat them that way. Like the royality of all knowledge and wisdom we know them to be. Just like when we were kids, right? When I was a boy old men were dangerous. Old women more dangerous. You got out of line and few things scared me more than an old man barking out, "Heyah! Heyah!" Hearing that would stop me dead in my tracks because I instantly knew I was caught misbehaving. Old women would get physical.

The Yellow Studio circa September 2019 It only took one day. To dismantle the Yellow Studio. It took a small generous community of podcast supporters. To help make it become a reality. Rode Rodecaster Pro now residing inside The Yellow Studio The donors are now on a special email list where I've been keeping them updated. This group will continue to remain special and enjoy some inside updates. It's just one small way I can thank you for making the Rode Rodecaster Pro possible. Now, let's geek out just a little bit for those of you interested in the technicalities of podcasting. For the rest of you, bear with me. Years ago when I built The Yellow Studio there were basically two methods or workflows used in podcasting. The first was by far the most popular because it was the least expensive route, RECORDING. To be fair, all podcasts are recorded. That became the very definition of the medium - serialized, subscribable audio content. People could listen at will. On their own timetable. It was all pretty slick and we were as excited to get an email as we were to get a new episode of our favorite podcast. RECORDING methodology just required a microphone and some software (much of it free). To gussy up the sound you needed fancier software. This also meant you spent time editing. The first recording wouldn't necessarily be the final version. This workflow demanded significant after-the-fact work. BROADCASTING was the other methodology. This wasn't nearly as popular because it required hardware. And hardware was (still is) expensive. The benefits are high. The minute you hit "record" the sound is recorded digitally exactly as it will sound when listeners hit "play." Other than editing for content - not for sound quality - it's more of a "what you hear is what you get" process. I instantly wanted to go the BROADCAST route because I preferred to put my work in ahead of hitting the record button. It wasn't about avoiding work. At least not for me. It was about when to do that work. I wanted to spend time doing the work ahead of recording, not afterward. This meant investing in gear. Thankfully, I had the ability to make the investment. And I had some expert help in figuring out what I should get. Click here for the episode I recorded in 2015 to answer the persistent question, "What does your studio look like?" I embarked on finding and assembling equipment that was mostly broadcast quality. Built to withstand hours and hours of non-stop operating without any problems. In short, I was building a small 2-mic station with just about everything other than a transmitter. My transmitter was going to be the Internet. The microphones came first. Two Heil Sound PR40 microphones. Others picked them because of longtime broadcaster/podcaster, Leo Laporte. Leo is a tech guy who has enjoyed radio and Internet success. He used the Heil PR40. Well, I didn't know of Leo when I got the PR40s. But I had heard of Bob Heil because I was very into music. I also had (still have it) a fondness for the sound of great condenser microphones, but I knew my space wouldn't be ideal for a condenser mic because they pick up EVERYTHING. My space was going to be pretty solid for recording, but it wasn't going to be like a professional voice booth (commonly used by voiceover artists) or like a professional recording studio with extensive sound isolation. Enter the PR40. Its large diaphragm has condenser mic qualities in a dynamic mic. Two Heil PR40s, each on its own boom arm and mounted inside its own shock mount. Those were the first items purchased. Next came the coveted Aphex 230 microphone preamps. Radio people and voiceover artists alike have run to the Aphex sound for years. Microphones have to be plugged into something that can provide enough gain so you get sound. Enter the preamps. The Aphex 230s - one for each mic - came next. They were among the first items installed in the six-unit gear rack.

I pulled the trigger on the Rode Rodecaster Pro. You're listening to it now. I'll update you on what's happening here inside The Yellow Studio at the end of the show. Thanks to everybody who contributed. I'll be reaching out in the next few weeks to get the Skype calls scheduled. Randy   Some nights ago. I don't remember what day. Or night. It's 2:15 am and I'm wide awake. Not uncommon. I fire up Apple iTunes, where all my music resides, including the thousands of CD's I've burned. And the digital downloads I've purchased. I slap on a pair of headphones, one of about four within arm's reach. I turn up the headphone amp to about 10 o'clock, plenty loud for me at this hour. Jamestown Revival album UTAH is calling out to me for some reason. Released in 2014 it's been a month or more since I've given it a go...so why not. I've been practically living on their newer release, circa this year 2019, San Isabel. So it's time to dive into my catalog a bit. This all happens because revival is on my mind. Their band name sparks it, but my love of their music is the draw. UTAH has a song entitled, Revival. So let's do it. I click PLAY. It's track 6 and track 7 follows, a song entitled Truth. A theme begins to emerge and intersects what's been on my mind the last week or more. Vince Gill's new record OKIE is a few weeks old and I've listened to it through a handful of times by now. As I'm pondering revival I start thinking of one particular song from this record, The Price of Regret. So I click PLAY and give it a go. Again. "Everyone knows the price of regret, the things in life we never forget." Regret. Revival. By the time I get to the 11th track of Vince's new record (there are 12 tracks total), I've added a third R-word, reputation. The song is entitled, That Old Man Of Mine. It's followed by the last track, A World Without Haggard. Songs of reputation. Legacy. What we remember about people. What people remember us for. Regret. Revival. Reputation. I don't suppose all three are important to everybody. Some people claim to have no regrets. I think that's foolish. Others refuse revival. Some perhaps because their character is so low they're nothing to revive. Did they ever have it? Maybe. Maybe not. Some refuse revival because they don't want to revive it. Easier, perhaps more short-term fun, to remain in sin and suffering. No going back to a time when they were more noble, more innocent, more helpful and made a more positive difference in the lives of others. So reputations are largely earned. Deserved perhaps. And I'm not talking about public reputation or how the masses feel. Most of us aren't subjected to that because we're mostly anonymous to the world. But inside our little corner of the world, we're known. For something. As something. What? When my kids were quite small - toddlers really - I was spending considerable time with an old man who was an important mentor in my life. Weekly we spent hours together talking and studying. I was burning life's candle at both ends, spending close to 80 hours working and devoting time to church and family. It was exhausting, but I was young and didn't think much of it. Truthfully, my energy was quite high much of the time. So one weeknight each week sitting at his kitchen table - sometimes with my family in tow - wasn't burdensome. I wanted to know what he knew and was anxious to learn all I could. One evening talk turned to family. He was a father with grown children. I was mere years into my own fatherhood and I inquired about regret. He said he had no regrets. Here was a man I respected. A man 25 plus years my senior. I remember thinking of my own regrets and I had many years to go to reach his age. It seemed impossible to me, so I pressed him. "I can't think of anything I'd do differently," he said, referencing his fatherhood. I didn't pursue the conversation any further, even though I was supremely puzzled.

2019 Prediction I see more and more people getting into podcasting who Want to spend zero money Spend very little time on creating content Make large amounts of money - quickly My prediction is 98% of the people who get into podcasting for the SOLE reason of making money fast will quit and say podcasting does not work. This episode is to educate you with knowledge so you can make an educated decision. Keep mind, you DO NOT have to make money with your podcast. Many, many, many podcasters do it for the love of the topic. Because of My Podcast: Emily Prokop Will Be on TV 1:50 Emily Prokop from The Story Behind Podcast and EPodcast Productions has had "Because of My Podcast" Stories in the past (as she got a book deal). Now because of her podcast (which brought her a book deal), she is going to be on Inside Edition. How cool is that? Congrats Emily Update on Rode Rodecaster Pro 4:10 Last week we had three people share their insights into the Rode Rodecaster Pro, and I had not tied the unit into Skype yet. I agree when you use the phone, it sounds like, the phone. I had Jonathan Bloom from Weekly Awesome and Miss Ileane Smith join me on Ask the Podcast Coach via the wired TRRS cable, using Skype and out sounded much better. Johnathan was on Skype in his phone and Ileane was using an ATR2100 and sounded awesome. The Potential Harm of Launching Your Podcast With a Patreon 7:28 While I realize that starting to promote a patreon account the minute you start podcasting may seem like a great idea, my worry is this is another criteria (like your download stats) to gauge your process. I'm not saying it's wrong, but I want you to go into this with your eyes wide open. How Do We Get Sucked In? There are people on patreon making thousands of dollars a month. In the same way, that ice skaters, musicians, comedians, and athletes make their craft look easy, so do these podcasters. You talk into a mic, ask people for money, and watch the cash roll in. Nothing could be further from the truth How Do You Feel About PBS Pledge Drives? Think about how you feel when watching a PBS pledge drive. You’re enjoying the smooth tones of James Taylor as you reminisce about the first time you heard this song on the radio. The memories make you feel warm and then BOOM! We need some money. If you don’t have a relationship with PBS, (and found this while channel surfing) I’m going to bet these interruptions are quite annoying. Without a relationship, pledge drives make you want to change the channel (at least for me it does). So does this mean that your pledge drives in the early days of your podcast is a bad idea? I guess it all depends on how entertaining and creative you are in asking for support. Things To Consider As a New Podcaster While launching with a Patreon campaign allows you to practice your pitch, and gets your audience used to hearing your pledge drive in episodes, there are a few things to consider: You may find yourself focusing more on your Patreon rewards instead of focusing on making great content that inspires your audience to tell a friend. You can practice your pledge drive pitch in the basement. You don’t have a relationship with these your audience and yet you're asking for a favor. Unless you organized a focus group, you may not be delivering value (and yet you are asking for value in return). Your Mom is not a focus group. If you are doing great you can expect 3% of your audience to join your campaign. If you have 100 listeners this means you MIGHT get 3. According to graphtreon.com in January of 2019: 704,041 creators received a total of $1,512,275. That's a little over $2 per patron. The lack of patrons can damage your attitude and make you want to quit your podcast. If your sole reason for starting your podcast was for quickly getting money, you should stop. The Pressure of Patreon 20:20 Jordan Harbinger gave up being a lawyer to do a podcast where he interviews people and talks about communications and social dynamics. On Friday he answers questions from his audience. One other thing, Jordan gets millions of downloads for this show. A listener of his was having a hard time finding the courage to launch his content. The person was already worried about the business side of his content, and he had been sitting on it for two years. Jordan brings up a great point of the pressure of running your podcast as a business right out the door. That pressure could hinder your creativity, affect your attitude in a negative way and hinder you from creating a great show that will attract an audience. Keep in mind, no audience - no money.  With this added pressure, the podcast might not be fun. Also, keep in mind when you first start out you're not going to be as good as you will be in a few years. He brought up a great point about how easily we can talk to people we would normally be attracted when we are in a relationship. Why? No pressure. He explains that when he first started he just liked talking about it to his friends. That lead to him talking to others in bars, which lead to... being known as the Larry King of Podcasting. You can't help, serve, or entertaining anyone with your files on your hard drive. Just launch. Check out Jordan's Show at www.jordanharbinger.com and check out his level one FREE Human Dynamics course. Check out my interviews with Jordan here and here. But Shouldn't You Treat Your Podcast Like a Business? 32:50 I've had people who have businesses that sell ads in their show who treat their podcast as a business. They have to. While you are starting out, you may not be in this situation. It may be smart to plan ahead, but it is a bit like buying a crib for your future child when you are still a virgin. Most businesses the podcast is not the business. It is the part of the marketing arm of the business to promote their products. When your product is Patreon, that is fine but realize that most podcasters who are doing it for a living have multiple streams of income (products, ads, affiliate sales, live events). Also, if your podcast is not a business or promoting a business - it leads me to my next point. Shut Up and Have Fun With Your Podcast If you are doing a podcast for fun, and meet like-minded people or friend and family - then do that. Pay no attention to the podcasters chasing a buck. There are SO MANY WAYS to benefit from podcasting (see because of my podcast) and money is just ONE of them. When you compare your podcast to another it - unless it someone doing the same exact show with the exact same background, it is NEVER a fair comparison. Don't worry about the money, the downloads, new and noteworthy, Apple charts, and just HAVE FUN doing your podcast and see where it leads you. Canva Vs Snappa Graphics can help attract attention to show notes, your episodes, etc. I was working on making a new image for my YouTube channel and found Snappa. I had heard about it. I have been using Canva.com for a while. After banging my head against the wall to have my image show up correctly in YouTube, Snappa seemed to have the edge. They have more photos, and when making a YouTube channel artwork Snappa worked better. However, you typically make a YouTube Channel artwork once or twice a year. Other items I make weekly. Canva has multiple folders you can create, they make copying and resizing images easier, and while you will still probably occasionally have to pay for an image even if you are paying for their $12 a month "business" package, I found it better thought out. You can crop images while you are using them. With Snappa, you had to crop it before bringing it into your graphic (how do I know how much I need to crop it if I haven't seen it with the other items?). A Free Image Strategy Canva.com, Snappa.com, and Adobe Spark all have free versions. If you're on a tight budget and don't mind taking more time to browse through multiple portals (along with places like pixabay) you might try signing up for a free account on all three. For me, I live Canva. The offer tutorials to help you get the most out of the service. Work With Me If you're ready to start your podcast, I have multiple plans for multiple budgets. I want to help you build a successful podcast. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I also have a podcast quick start program for those who are looking to get up and running quickly and then have a brief mentorship.

The Rode Rodecaster Pro has caught the attention of many podcasters, and some have pulled the trigger. Jim Harold (Paranormal podcast) and Jeff Bradury from Teachercast have purchased the unit. I want to thank Rode for shipping me a unit to play with. Their first impression was amazing. Is It Worth the Money? If purchased a four channel mixer a popular mixer is the Behringer Q1202USB is $119 A Mackie Headphone Amplifier is $40 A Jingle pallet can cost you $10 (Backpack Studio on iOs) but you'll need a phone or a tablet A portable recorder at its cheapest is $119 for a Zoom H1N The Aphex processing would cost you $345. Total Price: That would be $120+40+10+120+345 = $635 The Rodecaster Pro clocks in at $599 and you avoid all the cabling all over the place. You don't have to learn about "Gain staging" and if you're using a half decent microphone, you're going to sound great. Spec Sheet PDF Quick Start Guide Jeff Bradbury of Teachercast 9:51 Jeff Bradbury from the Teachercast loves his Rodecaster Pro Jeff had a situation where he needed to interview someone over the phone and it turned out great. Jeff points out that if you're using something external for mix-minus, you might hit a snag He also wishes it came with a Micro SD card. He has worked with it on Skype and Zoom. Jeff is using a Mac If you're a teacher, check out everything Jeff has to offer at www.teachercast.net Jim Harold From the Paranormal Podcast 14:21 Jim Harold has been podcasting since 2005 and produces the Paranormal Podcast, Campfire, Crime Scene along with being the author of many books (all available at www.jimharold.com ) Jim loves the ease of use and enjoys having a noise gate to cut out room noise when he's not talking. He really loves the sound the unit is producing. At the time of the recording, Jim had used it for 4-6 new episodes. Jim has used a Sound Devices Mixpre-3, and a Zoom L12, but really loves the sound he is producing with the Rodecaster. Jim also records a show with his wife called Soulmate Stories and it makes it super easy to pull in people who want to share their stories check it out at http://www.soulmatestoriespodcast.com Jim also hopes in the future there is a way to access recording without having to take the micro SD card out. Jim is also on a Mac. Jim also feels that while he doesn't miss having separate tracks for each person, it would be nice to offer this option in the future. Dave Jackson's Rodecaster Review First of all, I was blown away by the package that was sent to me from the Rode people. This was my first interaction with this company, and I'm not sure I've experienced such a great first impression. I love that you can configure this in minutes. You simply pair the unit with your phone and you're off and running. I used it on Saturday for a live show using Google Hangouts and also on a Group Coaching call using zoom.us and while Rode says it's not set up for the USB to be "mix minus" it appears to work. I like that you can reset the timer if you make a flub and want to start again without stopping the recording. I love the built-in headphone amplifier (don't miss the 3.5mm on the front if you are flying solo). I have my headphones plugged into one, and my studio monitors into another. I am having a slight playback issue (I'm the only one of the three using a new Windows machine). I also hate the MicroSD Card and would love to drag and drop the files to my computer without having to take the card out. I wish there was a pause button so if something goes wrong you could pause the recording. I also wish there was a pause on the jingle buttons so if you wanted to stop and comment on something and then resume your could. In my tests using the TRRS cable made myself sound better to the caller, but decreased their volume. The blue tooth option made the caller louder, but I sounded "not as good" to the caller (but still usable) While  Dave doesn't miss separate tracks (but admittedly he is interviewing podcasters who have decent audio quality) he does wish there was a tad more control over the tone. A Weird Playback Issue on Windows 46:18 I had a weird playback issue that apparently does not go into the recording. It is somewhat like a "buzz" that only I hear (not the people on the call. As I just recently got my unit and started putting it through the paces I am the only person I know having these issues. I have contacted Rode support to see if there is something on my end. I have found that whatever program I'm using if I temporarily switch what I'm using for a microphone it goes away. Microphone Shootout The Rode Procaster vs the Electrovoice RE320 52:54 The Rode Procaster has a very warm sound to it. While I didn't have a pop filter on it, but not talking directly into it I had no popping issues. The RE320 has a nice clear sound and really there is no bad choice here. For me, I've been using the RE320 for years. I enjoy the clarity, and the tone doesn't seem to change much if I get close to the mic. The Rode Procaster is $189. The Electrovoice RE320 is $299. If you are looking for the warmth of a Heil Pr40 without the $327 price tag, you might give it a shot. There is a WS2 Windscreen for the Procaster if you want one. Best Uses Of the Rodecaster Pro If you are doing a podcast where up to four people are in the room, and you want a very short learning curve through the technology, this is the unit for you. You just need to: Do your best not to talk over each other (although channel one can be set as the "top dog" with a ducking feature which turns everyone down) There is no way to tell how much time is left, or how long a jingle will be playing. With this in mind, don't have music you have to "talk up" and then have the music fade in. This would take some practice, or the music you are talking over has to be OBVIOUS when it's time to fade it back in. With the above items, with a little planning ahead you can sound like an old radio pro in minutes. So if you have a co-host(s) and occasionally have a guest who wants to call in via the phone - this is THE solution. How I Managed Live Calls on the Ask the Podcast Coach Last Week Last week I used the Rodcaster Pro to take phone calls on a live streaming program. I used Google Live (formerly Google Hangouts on Air) for my video. I if you just want audio you can use a tool such a mixlr.com to stream your audio to your audience, or spreaker.com which also will stream audio. To create a call queue, I use callinstudio.com. I attached my phone to the Rodecaster Pro via Bluetooth, and called my host number at callinstudio.com and gave out the callinstudio.com phone number for the callers. I monitor the calls via callinstudio.com and can add them to the call, or drop them if needed. They came through and sounded great.

In 1977 a singer I knew as a background singer released her first solo record, Just A Stone's Throw Away. She had been singing with some of my favorite artists. People like Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, Little Feat, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor. Her name was Valerie Carter. She was 24. In 1980 Jackson Browne released a famous song, "That Girl Could Sing," which was likely about Valerie. She battled drug addiction for years. She died in 2017. She was 64. Track number 3 on that debut record is a song, "Heartache." Click here to listen to the song. Today's show title is a lyric from that song. Valerie, like you and me, knew heartache. Lowell George of Little Feat co-wrote the song. We're not going to end the year on a downer note. Instead, we're going to be optimistic. Not because we stick our head in the sand, but because we're strong enough to face the realities of our pain and heartache. And the reality that for some of us 2018 was a grand year of heartache. Valerie sang that lyric directly to Heartache. "Heartache, find another place to be. I'm tired of being your best friend." She's tired of providing the landing place for heartache. Tired of embracing heartache as her best friend. It's a breakup song with heartache. Is there any better time to give heartache the heave-ho? Here at the end of the year? Ditching heartache isn't nearly so neat and tidy. Would that we could just make up our mind to be done with it. Not so easy. 2018 brought some of us extraordinary heartache. I know some LTW listeners who lost spouses. Some who suffered betrayal from a spouse. Some who endured heavy financial strains. Others who lost jobs. Some endured the heartache of loved ones addicted to drugs. Some were diagnosed with diseases. Heartache knows no bounds. It touches all of us, in a variety of ways. Songs of trouble and heartache resonate with us because it's such a universal experience. As I was listening to Valerie sing the song responsible for today's podcast title, I thought of other songs. Ry Cooder's song, "Trouble, You Can't Fool Me" from his 1979 album, Bop Til You Drop. And there's the song I always think of by Mat Kerney, from his 2009 album, City Of Black & White. The song, "Closer To Love" contains the line, "We're all one phone call from our knees." It depicts a phone call that buckles us, causes us such heartache we can't even stand on our feet. Going Here visit us                                                                                 There are classics like "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers, released on his album, Still Bill, circa 1972. All of us can relate to the lyrics. Sometimes in our lives we all have pain We all have sorrow But if we are wise We know that there's always tomorrow Lean on me, when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on Please swallow your pride If I have things you need to borrow For no one can fill those of your needs That you won't let show You just call on me brother, when you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on I just might have a problem that you'll understand We all need somebody to lean on Lean on me, when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on You just call on me brother, when you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on I just might have a problem that you'll understand We all need somebody to lean on If there is a load you have to bear That you can't carry

The Rode Rodecaster Pro could THE piece of gear for 2019. I'm here to tell you everybody is scrambling it replaces so many pieces of equipment into one.It is a mixer, a recorder, a jingle palet, a channel strip, and it connects with your phone. You can record up to four microphones and your phone. The phone has built-in mix minus (so the person on the phone won't have weird echo issueThe 4 high-quality microphone channels are able to power both dynamic and condenser microphones. You can quickly connect microphones for you and your guests with an automatic level setting and one-touch recording to a microSD card. You can connect to your phone via Bluetooth or TRRS cable. You will be able to drag and drop files into the jingle buttons.Built-in Signal Processing that Would Cost you Hundreds of DollarsYour pristine signal can also be enhanced with the legendary patented audio processors, APHEX Aural Exciter™ and APHEX Big Bottom™. These have been incorporated in the audio processing section of the RØDECaster Pro, and your sound will have that rich, warm tone only found in professional studios. The RØDECaster Pro also features multistage dynamics, such as compression, limiting, de-essing and noise-gating.What It Would Take to Have All the functionalityA Zoom H6 Portable Recorder $319 iPad mini 4 (wi-fi only) $389iJingle webmaster app for ipad $20Aphex Aural Exciter $345 ( and really it would be $99 for the Aphex Channel)That would cost $1073What It Doesn't DoThe only thing some people who want the ultimate control may be disappointed that it only records in stereo. If you are recording four people you get one stereo file. I recorded this way for YEARS, and yes it is nice to have everyone on their own track to add different EQs, and mute tracks, etc but this built into the unit. If you record it correctly, you don't need to work magic in post-production. For me, this is not a deal breaker. Yes, the Zoom H6 does this, but it doesn't have the built-in Aphex, the phone connection, jingle buttons and more. The Rode Rodecaster Costs $599 and will Ship This MonthHere is a quick video (that wastes about 30 seconds about storytelling at the intro)
