Kate Adie introduces stories from Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Singapore, Oman and Vietnam. The Amazon rain forest in Brazil has suffered its worst fires in two decades, with most started illegally by humans looking to exploit the land for its resources. The world relies on the Amazon to absorb a lot of its carbon, but these fires mean it is now emitting record amounts itself. Ione Wells has been in Brazil's west. The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the world's most biodiverse countries, though decades of war and deforestation have led to the degradation of the environment. But a group of scientists is trying to revitalise a forgotten reserve in Haut-Katanga province. Hugh Kinsella Cunningham travelled with them to the Upemba National Park.Singapore has a zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs, and is one of only a few countries that continues to execute people convicted of drug trafficking. For those caught using illicit narcotics, the punishments can also be severe. Linda Pressly met recovering addicts undergoing compulsory treatment in a state-run rehab centre.Oman is growing in popularity as a tourist destination, though the oil-rich sultanate is focusing on its ancient heritage, rather than the hi-tech desert cities of its neighbours. This travel boom is also providing opportunities for women entrepreneurs hoping to break cultural barriers, as Sophia Smith Galer discovered in the Salalah region. And we travel to Vietnam where William Lee Adams embarked on a personal mission while filming a travel documentary - to lay his elder brother's ashes to rest at his family's temple in Ho Chi Minh City.Series producer: Serena Tarling Production coordinators: Sophie Hill & Katie Morrison Editor: Richard Fenton-Smith

#vicoduarte #gremio #vitoria

Featured Speakers: Professor David Des Roches, Bilal Y. Saab, Dr. Cinzia Bianco, and Dr. Geoffrey Gresh. Maritime security in the waters of the Gulf has in recent years experienced ongoing tensions. Rising security issues in the Strait of Hormuz, including the hijacking of ships and attacks on oil tankers, represent a major threat to the security of the global oil and gas market. So far, attempts to secure the Strait of Hormuz and other waterways near the Gulf have led to the creation of the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) in November 2019 by the United States and other European and GCC states. To secure their commercial interests, the European countries have established their own maritime security initiative, the European Maritime Awareness in the Strait of Hormuz (EMASOH), on January 20, 2020, reaching full operational capacity for one of its maritime surveillance missions in the strait the following month. The security and economic return of GCC states' ports also emerged as a crucial factor. Therefore, ports that are considered relatively safer, like Yanbu on the Red Sea or Khor Fakkan, Sohar, Salalah, and Duqm in the Gulf of Oman, could bring economic opportunities for these states and become central sites for the economic and security development of their respective countries. In parallel with the growing maritime security challenges in the Gulf and its surroundings, the GCC states have increased their investments in ports to improve their position within global maritime trade. However, over the past decade, attacks on vessels, including docked targets, have exposed the vulnerabilities of several ports' security arrangements. Therefore, GCC countries have focused on the protection of their maritime infrastructures and related free zones. As a clear example, the UAE ports introduced their own autonomous security boats, while also increasing cooperation with international actors in this regard. In the coming years, what trends are likely to be seen with regard to maritime security in the Gulf? How can the GCC states further protect and expand their critical maritime infrastructure? What steps can be taken to curb the danger posed by malign actors in the Red Sea, Bab-el-Mandeb, and Hormuz straits? And what additional role, if any, should the United States and Europe play in safeguarding international commerce? https://gulfif.org/ Twitter: @GulfIntlForum LinkedIn: @GulfIntlForum

In this episode I chatted to James Trevor Jackson, lecturer at the university of technology and applied sciences in Salalah, in Oman. After rather ludicrously getting his name wrong.....not a great start for any podcast host.....and Trevor taking it very well....I had to know more about living and working in Oman. Trevor has lectrued in 7 countries across the world and is currently working on a book entitled 'Shame and Shaming in the Twenty-First Century,' of which the first two chapters are focused on the evolution of shame, with an eye towards how the adaptive trait of feeling shame, as well as shaming others, impacts us today. Trevor discussed his work with me and spoke in fantastic details and depth about the subject of shame related to human evolution. Drawing comparisons with primates and looking at exceptions, looking back into early hominins and the development of human social structures and how shame facilitated some of these developments. It was a really interesting and thought provoking conversation for me and I hope Trevor will come back again to talk more on the subject. To find out more about his work in this area head to www.shameandshaming.com To get in touch about episodes, ask questions, make suggestions and be a guest, get in touch at bunchofapes@gmail.com. The Pre Prophet Arabian history is summed up in the statement that the Arabs were Nomads, warring tribes and worshiped Pagans. Islamic History records that Muhammad, after his return from Medina destroyed 360 Idols in Kaaba. This was done with the help of Seven allies with whom Muhammad formed an alliance and these people were tribal chiefs. The early unruly and warring tribes of Arabia was subjugated by King Vikramaditya of India in 100 BC. He established Hindu Dharma and laid the foundation of Sanatana Dharma in Arabia. Along with other idols , he also installed a Shiva Linga in Kaaba. it is believed that Jats from India were entrusted with the protection of the Kaaba temple. And they also doubled up as physicians. ‘It is mentioned in the Abadis i.e., the authentic traditions of Prophet Mohammad compiled by Imam Bukhari that the Indian tribe of Jats had settled in Arabia before Prophet Mohammad's times. Once when Hazrat Ayesha, wife of the Prophet, was taken ill, her nephew sent for a Jat physician for her treatment. This proves that Indians enjoyed a high and esteemed status in Arabia. Such a status could not be theirs unless they were the rulers. Bukhari also tells us that an Indian Raja (king) sent a jar of ginger pickles to the Prophet. This shows that the Indian Jat Raja ruled an adjacent area so as to be in a position to send such an insignificant present as ginger pickles. The Prophet is said to have so highly relished it as to have told his colleagues also to partake of it. These references show that even during Prophet Mohammad's times Indians retained their influential role in Arabia, which was a dwindling legacy from Vikramaditya's times.9slaram, net) There is yet another evidence that priests were sent from Kerala by the King Cheraman Peruman Nayanar to perform Poojas in the Kaaba temple. He was a contemporary of Prophet. As a matter of fact this is the only solid historical evidence from external sources for the existence of Prophet. ‘ Ibn Battuta accounts say that Calicut King Cheman Perumal had a head priest cum accounts in-charge at the Shiva Temple ( called PAGAN temple by the west ) at Mecca which was a watering oasis for the camels , enroute to Jerusalem and Petra. ..For whatever reasons, the disturbed King decided to make a trip to Mecca , as soon as he heard that Mohammed founded Islam and installed a black stone , on the SE corner of the Kaaba. He took a ship from Calicut to Salalah and form there went by caravan route to Mecca. He met Mohammed , and the Islamic grapevine says that he was impressed by Islam and got converted from Hindu to Muslim. The King's court at Calicut does NOT record this conversion, though messages were sent fast by carrier pigeons and hawks. The Encyclopedia Islamia admits as much when it says: “Muhammed's grandfather and uncles were hereditary priests of the Kaaba temple which housed 360 Vedic idols!” The encyclopedia Britannica records this too.( Captain Ajit Vadakayil) That the Kin was converted to Islam is not corroborated. The Vedic Practices in Kaaba that are observed even today. Kaaba doors open at Pradosha Time, between 4. 30 and 5. 30 PM. 1.The perambulation in the anti clock wise direction around the Kaaba is the Hindu practice of perambulating Shiva in the anti clockwise direction direction during pradosha, the sacred day to worship Shiva. A műsort készítette és vezette: Mátai András • Zene: The Delorean - Door Knob--------------------------------------

The country is not really desert whilst being part of the Arabian Peninsula, with a terrain that offers some of the most astonishing beaches and coves that eyes could see. Less than few miles in-land and you can delight at the sight of proudly erected mountains and rugged terrains that stretch for miles on end. The country is not populated by a strictly Bedouin-like society but still camels are herded for labor as well as for commerce (especially for racing since the country produces the best kind ever). Tribal ties remain strong especially in the mountainous or Jebeli areas, and pride, which comes with the territory, runs very deep. The country has embraced Islam since the early times of the holy message, but it does not fall within the dichotomy of Sunnis and Shias. Rather, it follows a milder form of the Ibadi religion that rejects warfare in the name of God and uses dignity and persuasion to get its point across. Furthermore, it has been home to migrant Hindus and -at one time- to thriving Jewish communities and has many churches, temples and Jewish landmarks especially the Tomb of Job located some 45 miles away from the port city of Salalah. The country is no democracy or parliamentary republic rather it is an absolute monarchy whose supreme sovereign, the Sultan of Oman Qaboos Bin Said Al Said, has reigned since 1970. However, the whimsical, capricious, despotic, erratic, unstable, shifting, and many other peculiarities -or defects- of monarchies from Burma to Buckingham, have been vividly absent or at least significantly tamed in this oasis of stability. The Sultan of Oman deposed his father in 1970 in a bloodless coup, save for the father having reportedly shot himself in the foot. This fact, if at all true, would be both anecdotal and telling about a casualty-free removal of a sitting monarch. The deposed Sultan then spent the rest of his days not locked-up in a donjon but at the Dorchester Hotel, in London. The United Kingdom saw the previous ruler as impermeable to modernity and hermetically closed to the outside world and in part to their oil-exploration interests. They backed the son in his bid for power and became the armed force behind the throne, for decades. The new Sultan's first order of priority was ending the Dhofar Rebellion (1962 to 1979) by offering amnesty to all those who had fought against his father. He then integrated Dhofar into Oman ending a distinction that had exacerbated rifts and secessionist ambitions. With the help of the British corps of engineers he launched a reconstruction campaign in the most destitute areas building schools and hospitals and digging wells. These gestures of good will were nonetheless accompanied by a resolute will to fight the Adoo (or enemy) in the rebellious province. Rebels took orders from their political bases in Yemen, backed by Maoist China and the Soviet Union. The Sultan's diplomatic maneuvering to recognize Oman as a full-member Arab State helped rein-in the territorial ambitions of neighbors, and denied the rebels official recognition, if not sanctuary. The harshly fought counterinsurgency was led by Omani Firqats trained and assisted by British officers, SAS elite force specialists, and the RAF, but also by the Imperial Iranian forces (under the Shah) and the Royal Jordanian troops (under King Hussein). More territory was won as more defectors from the rebels' ranks joined the Sultan' forces and were pardoned before serving under his banner. Oman has been portrayed as a neutral country, and one that does not appear to be working in tandem with its Arab neighbors or partners. But the evidence points in the wrong direction. A bloody civil war is not a neutral business. When the going got tough Oman, and its ruler, fought for over a decade to quash the rebellion, unite the country and modernize the infrastructure. In fact, the asphalt roads that one sees in the remotest areas of Oman are not the result of a corrupt public works system.

In Oman you have to be flexible, and that's exactly what I needed on my last Salalah road trip. My friends and I found ourselves stuck in the mud! In this episode of the Sultanate, my friend John and I take you along with us on a nine day trip from Muscat to Salalah and back again. Something you might be considering to do yourself. Along the way we visit rich lagoons, interesting geological sights, historical towns, tourist sights, friends, and a muddy pasture. There are so many sights to see in Salalah and Dhofar, including many ways to reach the area from Muscat. This Salalah road trip is just one option for an itinerary, but one I've been recommending to readers for years. It gives you a little bit of everything, and a heavy helping of adventure. You can view images from our trip down the coast at the associated episode post on my website. Check it out! Bottom line, if you have just over a week to visit Dhofar, consider taking the coastal route for a little more excitement. It is definitely off the beaten track. If you have less time for your holiday you might consider flying from Muscat to Salalah and hiring a car from the airport. That'll give you more time to see the sights of Dhofar. Also, don't try to do it all! Fourteen days is too short, in my opinion, to really enjoy both the south and north of Oman. Plan your trip wisely. After the Quest tragedy, rally members were safe for the moment in Salalah, Oman. The problem was getting out of there. Their options were limited and dangerous and none of them would happen quickly. The Gulf Of Aden lead to the Mediterranean Sea but it just happened to be one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world.
