Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Sanford K. Sanford, Son of Isabel Sanford, Star of “The Jeffersons” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Sanford K. Sanford, is the son of one of the most popular and beloved stars in the history of television, Isabel Sanford, whose portrayal of Louise Jefferson – or “Weezy”, as we came to know her – first on “All in the Family”, and then for 11 seasons on “The Jeffersons”, made her a household name. After a distinguished career on the stage, she landed the role of “Tillie” in the classic 1967 movie, “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner”, opposite Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and Sydney Poitier. From there, she was cast as Louise Jefferson, next door neighbour to “the Bunkers” on the groundbreaking TV show, “All in the Family”. And THAT led to the incredibly successful spinoff, “The Jeffersons”. Isabel Sanford received 7 Emmy Award nominations, and WON an Emmy in 1981, making her the first and still the only African American woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She was also nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards. She won TWO NAACP Image Awards, and in 1981 she won a Genie Award from the American Women in Radio and Television Association. And in 1985 she received an Honorary Doctorate from Emerson College. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in 2004, she and her co-star Sherman Hemsley, won a TV Land Award for Favourite Cantankerous Couple. Our guest has written a wonderful, heartwarming book, entited, “Her Fans Call Her Weezy But I Call Her Mom”, in which he shares many poignant and life-altering moments with his beloved Mama, and allows us to get to know the real person behind the beloved actress – a courageous single mother of 3 children who, despite many challenges in her life, showed remarkable determination and remained focused on becoming a successful actress. Our guest has had a successful music career as a percussionist, and he's worked with Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye, Johnny Guitar Watson, Bobby Womack, Cuba Gooding Sr. and The Main Ingredient. The gang is back! This week (or however long it’s been)’s episode is on GANJA & HESS (also known as BLOOD COUPLE and DOUBLE POSSESSION depending on where or when you didn’t see it … ) Bill Gunn’s 1973 take on a Black Vampire film, most recently remade by Spike Lee as DA SWEET BLOOD OF JESUS. Is it a horror movie? A piece of avant-garde cinema? A bit of Blaxpoitation fun? All of these, or none? Good questions but we focus on the most important one: Is it ART? Or is it CRAP? Starring Duane Jones (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD), Marlene Clark (THE LANDLORD, SANFORD & SON), and Gunn himself in a pivotal role. This one is a big one. Find some way to take your students with you, digitally, this summer. Every life science teacher I know finds themselves in the forest or on the lake. Every English teacher I know has a stack of books they've been saving for just these three months. Every social science person scours the internet or antique malls for relics to add to their Sanford & Son classroom museum. Alternatively, they pack up the family truckster for travels with Charlie going to battlefields, museums, or visiting every cast plaque historical marker they can locate on Google Maps. Regardless of your content, there is something you're going to do this summer that would benefit your students.

Proving that the black audience will take, a non 'super black' exploitation movie seriously. 31. QUESTION: What pops out for you? 32. Socio-political (1st major shift to a new direction, political power) 33. Shirley Anita Chisholm, (@ 47): politician, educator, and author of "Unbought and Unbossed! -1970 autobiographies. 34. in 1972, she became the first black person EVER to run for POTUS AND the first woman to run for the Democrats. 35. Already, in 1968, she was the first black woman elected to Congress. 36. Her campaign was underfunded, dismissed as a symbolic, & basically ignored by the power structure. 37. And she was not instantly a heroine for black people. 38. Of course, black male colleagues showed little love: "When I ran for the Congress, when I ran for president, I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men.... They think I am trying to take power from them. The black man must step 39. forward, but that doesn't mean the black woman must step back." 40. QUESTION: Is this the real reason more black women haven't run? (only other black woman was Carol Moseley Braun from Il in 2004) 41. About her legacy, she said, “I want to be remembered as a woman … who dared to be a catalyst of change.” (Obama?) 42. Famous Quotes: 43. "Tremendous amounts of talent are lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt." 44. "The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, 'It's a girl'." 45. "In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing - anti-humanism." 46. Conclusion: In our lifetime we saw THE MOST successful path for black advancement. Politics. Only 36 years from Shirley to Obama. 47. Shirley Chisholm was an underappreciated legend and icon. 48. Other Comments? 49. Meanwhile...the Black Power Movement is falling apart! (2nd major shift) 50. 1971-1972 the Panthers split into different camps. Huey vs Eldrigdge 51. They went "Hatfield vs McCoy" and started retaliatory assassinations. 52. H. Rap Brown (@ 29), is the latest high-profile BPM figure to fall. 53. Others include: Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Elaine Brown, Eldridge Cleaver, Fred Hampton, Huey P. Newton, Stokely Carmichael, and Bobby Seale 54. H Rap Brown sentenced for an attack on a New York City bar?!?! 55. Currently serving a life sentence for murder after shooting of two Sheriff's deputies in 2000. 56. He was known for taking over SNCC after Stokely and his autobiography, Die Nigger Die! 57. Probably most famous for saying, "violence is as American as cherry pie” -and- "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down." 58. QUESTION: Was the decline of the BPM more internal (reliance on the gun and violence), external (black people lost interest) -OR- did black people choose to go the "integration" route? 59. Conclusion: The BPM had a great message: Pride, Self-reliance, and education. But, I think they were too extreme. 60. Other Comments: 61. Key Artist - Diana Ross (@28): Singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Detroit. 76. Became famous as the lead singer the Supremes, the best charting girl group in history. With twelve number-one hit singles. ("Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love", "You Can't Hurry Love", "You Keep Me 77. Hangin' On", "Love Child", and "Someday We'll Be Together", etc...) 78. The movie dream girls was inspired by the group 79. She also did a few big films: Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, The Wiz, etc... 80. Question: Here's my problem with The Boss. Mary Wilson was the heart and soul of the Supremes. Florence Ballard was the best singer. Diana was what? 81. Conclusion: The Supremes were deliberately glamorous, because Gordy wanted all of Motown to be crossover artists. Beyonce has real game, I'm not convinced Diana wasn't just hyped up. 82. Other Comments: 83. Key Artist - Al Green (@26): singer, songwriter and record produce. Born in AR, grew up in Michigan, discovered in Memphis. 84. Kicked out of the house when his very religious daddy caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. 85. Quote: "I also listened to Mahalia Jackson, all the great gospel singers. But the most important music to me was those hip-shaking’ boys: Wilson Pickett and Elvis Presley. I just loved Elvis Presley. Whatever he got, I went out and bought." 86. Started out in 1967, flashed in 1971 with the album, "Al Green Gets Next to You", PEAKED in 1972 with 2 albums - "Let's Stay Together" & "I'm Still in Love with You", and capped 1973 with the lp "Call Me", a critically acclaimed "Masterpiece!" 87. Basically, everything we love about Al was dropped in that 3-year window. 88. 1974 he was born again 89. Soon after that his "girlfriend" dumped boiling grits on him in the bathtub before shooting and killing herself. (with his gun!?) 90. By 1976, he was ready to go gospel. 91. His longtime producer, Willie Mitchell (the guy who discovered him and crafted his music), passed on doing gospel music. (Bounced check story) 92. 1977, he dropped "The Belle Album", his 12th. Rolling Stone magazine said, "We may someday look back on The Belle Album as Al Green’s best" 93. Question: Just an observation really. This is the 3rd major shift in 1972. Al didn't make political or activist music. Some said he was the last great "Soul Man". In 1971 Marvin asked, what's going on. During 1972, in the middle of war protests, Watergate, an 94. election, civil rights protests, the Panthers shooting up the streets, Al Green made LOVE ok again. 95. Other Comments: 96. Vote: Key Artists, ________________________________ 97. Movies 98. Lady Sings the Blues: Based on Lady Sings the Blues by Billie Holiday 99. Starring: Diana Ross (@28), Billy Dee Williams (@35), Richard Pryor (@32) 100. Blacula: important because it was a successful black horror film 101. Buck and the Preacher: important for casting blacks as leads in a western and was the first film Sidney Poitier directed 102. Super Fly: 4th Major shift (The streets are talking) 103. Priest is done with the clothes, the cars, the drugs, the money, and the white women. 104. But, his partner, Eddie isn’t. 105. Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): "You're gonna give all this up? 8-Track Stereo, color T.V. in every room, and can snort a half a piece of dope everyday? That's the American Dream, nigga! Well, ain't it? Ain't it?" 106. Curtis Mayfield (@30) wrote and produced the AMAZING soundtrack. 107. Starring: Ron O’Neal (@35), Carl Lee (@46), Sheila Frazier (@24) 108. At the time of its release, lots of black folks didn't like what Super Fly was representing. 109. Quote from the Hollywood NAACP branch: “we must insist that our children are not exposed to a steady diet of so-called black movies that glorify black males as pimps, dope pushers, gangsters, and super males.” 110. The filmmakers (White producer / black director) say they wanted to show the negative and empty aspects of the drug subculture. 111. Regardless, Super Fly landed BIG TIME with the "post-Civil Rights" generation. 112. They thought Eddie spoke the gospel. 113. Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): " I know it's a rotten game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play. That's the stone, cold truth." 114. Question: Ultimately, what is the legacy of Superfly? 115. Conclusion: I really enjoyed the movie. However, it blatantly dismissed the BPM, and spoke directly to the criminal elements in the black community. Yes, it’s me, Marc Hershon. Your host and non-Presidential candidate for Epi118 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. This is another Succotash Clips episode. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a long Succotash "Chatsisode", but I have a few potential interviews lined up for the next couple of weeks. We’ll see if anyone wants to talk to me and, if they do, then we’ll see if you want to listen to it. See how that works? For new listeners to this here podcast, and just as a reminder to you old ears out there, we feature clips of other comedy podcasts as way to let you know what’s going on out there in Podcastland. It’s basically a public service and, checking the level of donations lately, we’re definitely not-for-profit. Oh, we’ll take your money. We just need to find someone who wants to give us some. We also interview podcasters, comedians, and comedy podcasters, as well as other interesting people we happen to find. The last episode of this show ran kinda long – about an hour and a half – and one of the reasons I split Succotash up into Clips and Chats in the first place was to get the show length down a little bit. This week should be a tight, tidy little program. Which means you can get back to your regular life, already in progress, very quickly. Coming up, clipwise, in this installment of Succotash Clips is Pipedream, Radio BrendoMan, Think Again, VICE, and Worst Collection Ever. In addition we have a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with comedian & social commentator Will Durst, a classic Henderson’s Pants commercial, and another end-of-the-show acapella song by regular contributor Abner Serd. Other Business I don’t think I have much in the way of business to get to, just the usual stuff nobody seems to pay much attention to, such as clicking the Donate button at the http://SuccotashShow.com website to help us out since we don’t have sponsors other than Henderson’s Pants…which doesn’t pay us squat. And if money is something you don’t want to spoil us with because you’re afraid that me, our producer Joe Paulino and announcer Bill Heywatt will just go out and drink it up – you may be right, actually – then get up to iTunes and give us a nice rating and a short review. Our friend Travis Clark of Tiny Odd Conversations is in town this week, performing Tuesday night at the Throckmorton Theatre, so I’m going to get together with he and his wife-sash-co-host…or is that co-host-slash-wife…Brandy for dinner. And if you’re in the Marin County area on Thursday night this week, I’ll be MC’ing a screening of the 3 Still Standing documentary and a live comedy show by the three guys featured in the film: Johnny Steele, Larry Brown, and our very own Will Durst. That will be at the Rafael Film Center this Thursday night starting at 7:30 PM. There’s a link in the blog piece for this episode at http://SuccotashShow.com to get more information. Clips Worst Collection EverFor our first clip, I’m going to turn the hands of time back about a month, to the 4th Los Angeles Podcast Festival. That’s when I got to be a guest on a podcast called The Worst Collection Ever, co-hosted by friends-of-Succotash Shawn Marek and his wife, Jen Stansfield-Marek. They have a perverse pride in their absolutely dreadful, terible, wonderful comic book collection. Books that no one seems to care about. It’s more an Island of Misfit Comics. This visit with them was a year in the making because last year at the Podfest I had told Shawn that my favorite terrible comic character is DC’s The Creeper. So he and Jen combed through their collection and dredged up an issue of the Brave and the Bold featuring The Batman teaming up with The Creeper to stop a mysterious villain made out of paper. Radio BrendoMan Speaking of the LA Podfest, our next clip was harvested by our associate producer Tyson Saner, who could not have known that when Brendan Creecy and Phil Vecchio of the Radio BrendoMan podcast were recording the episode this clip is from, that I was sitting just an arm’s length away in the SquareSpace Podcast Lab. I ever remember them doing this segment. But they never asked me to be on their podcast. Hmm… Think AgainThis past week, for Huffington Post and Splitsider.com, I reviewed the Think Again podcast with host Jason Gots and his guest, the great Norman Lear, producer of such TV touchstones as All In The Family, Good Times and Sanford & Son. It’s a cool premise for a podcast. Jason has his producer select and play three short audio clips from different topics that are taken from past guest on the Big Think website’s videocast. He doesn’t know which ones are coming up and neither does his guest. After each sound bite, they respond to the topic at hand. In the slice I’m about to play for you, Lear and Gots kick around Donald Trump and human cruelty. It starts out with the audio chunk that they’ll then respond to… PipedreamTyson tracked down and clipped us a hunk of the Pipedream podcast, which is part of the ComedyPipe Network. That’s kind of all we’ve been able to find out about the show. Pipedream is apparently hosted by a trio of Albany, New York, comedians but it’s not easy to discover their names by ANY of the web presence we found. Tyson THINKS one is named “3D”. Beyond that, though, these guys need to get their PR together. Because it’s a pretty decent show and we should be able to know who the hosts are, right? In this clip, they talk to their guest — who IS identified — Harry White, a standup from New York and a Succotash fan. In fact, the only reason we found out about the show is that Harry clued us in that he was going to be on it. Hey, Harry! Who the hell are the guys you’re talking to? The VICE PodcastAccording to their entry over on PodBay, which is a great app for listening to your favorite podcasts, by the way, the VICE Podcast is a weekly discussion which delves inside the minds of some of the most interesting, creative, and bizarre people within the VICE universe. From the clip Tyson picks up for us, VICE’s host Reihan Salam gets comedian and musical genius Reggie Watts to reveal his agenda of world domination. We’re all done with Succotash Clips, Epi 118, and that didn’t hurt a bit, did it? I’m going to give you a virtual lollypop for being so brave. Until next time, thanks very much for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
The best comparison for The Carmichael Show is the Norman Lear era type shows like All In The Family, Sanford & Son, Good Times and Maude all of which tackled larger than life issues like race, equality, abortion, sexuality, etc. etc. Something that has been missing from television as of late (or usually relegated to the slight undertones in dramas) The Carmichael Show wants to talk about these issues openly in the sitcom format. In this episode we take a look at the original script and the final product and you'll be surprised by some of the changes - one of the biggest was the addition of Tiffany Haddish as Lil'Rey's (Bobby's) ex-wife. We are grateful for this podcast because without it we don't think we would have even considered watching The Carmichael Show, but after you take a listen we definitely think you should. Current episodes are streaming on NBC.com so catch them while you can.
Awwww yeah! It is getting hot in here as Ben & Josh try out a truly x-rated beverage. Speaking of which, Ben lets his "jerk flag" fly as he insinuates all sorts of stuff about Josh's mom. Josh is not pleased, yet is undeterred in his quest to learn to pick locks. Why? So he can get into his parents' candy stash. Yes, really. No, Josh is not five years old. He just acts that way. In addition, we've got Ben's "porno" music that slowly devolves into a bad semi-cover of the Sanford & Son theme, Josh's picks for classic music and TV (they're as bad as expected), and Ben's plan to improve the TV show "The Goldbergs". All wrapped up inside a review of a drink that magically smells like a Utah dessert staple. It's crass, it's crazy, it's exactly what you'd expect from the newest episode of Drinks With Josh!
In this episode, the Goods from the Woods Boys discuss what it's like to move to a new place with two comedians who literally JUST moved to Los Angeles. Those comedians are Drew Whitney Morgan and D.J. Lewis who hail from the rising comedy scene of Knoxville, TN. This episode is all about hellacious landlords, sketchy starter friends, and those sad, isolating first attempts at fitting into an unfamiliar place. Side tangents include Sanford & Son, Burt Reynolds, and D.J.'s 9-year stint in prison (No, for real). This one is a doozy and we couldn't be more proud of it! Check out D.J. on Twitter at @DJLewisComedian. Check out Drew at @AverageDrew. Also, peep Drew's book "The Liberal Redneck Manifesto" wherever fine books are sold.
