In October of 1871, Chicagoans knew they were due for the “big one”—a massive, uncontrollable fire that would decimate the city. There hadn't been a meaningful rain since July, and several big blazes had nearly outstripped the fire department's scant resources. On October 8, when Kate Leary's barn caught fire, so began a catastrophe that would forever change the soul of the city.Leary was a diligent, hardworking Irish woman, no more responsible for the fire than anyone else in the city at that time. But the conflagration that spread from her property quickly overtook the neighborhood, and before too long the floating embers had spread to the far reaches of the city. Families took to the streets with everything they could carry. Grain towers threatened to blow. The Chicago River boiled. Over the course of the next forty-eight hours, Chicago saw the biggest and most destructive disaster the United States had ever endured, and Leary would be its scapegoat.Out of the ashes rose not just new skyscrapers, tenements, and homes, but also a new political order. The city's elite saw an opportunity to rebuild on their terms, cracking down on crime and licentiousness and fortifying a business-friendly environment. But the city's working class recognized a naked power grab that would challenge their traditions, hurt their chances of rebuilding, and move power out of elected officials' hands and into private interests. As quickly as the firefight ended, another battle for the future of the city began between the town's business elites and the poor and immigrant working class.Today's guest is Scott Berg, author of “The Burning of the World: The Great Chicago Fire and the War for a City's Soul.” Beginning with the fire's origin on the property of Irish immigrant Kate Leary, we explore how a simple barn fire brought Chicago to its knees and ushered in a new political order in which immigrants wrested control of the city from the business class and birthed the machine politics for which the city is known today. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement

What a terrific kick-off to season five! This is a wonderful conversation with Mariah Fredericks about her latest novel, The Lindbergh Nanny. Here's a description from the publisher: When the most famous toddler in America, Charles Lindbergh, Jr., is kidnapped from his family home in New Jersey in 1932, the case makes international headlines. Already celebrated for his flight across the Atlantic, his father, Charles, Sr., is the country's golden boy, with his wealthy, lovely wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, by his side. But there's someone else in their household—Betty Gow, a formerly obscure young woman, now known around the world by another name: the Lindbergh Nanny.   A Scottish immigrant deciphering the rules of her new homeland and its East Coast elite, Betty finds Colonel Lindbergh eccentric and often odd, Mrs. Lindbergh kind yet nervous, and Charlie simply a darling. Far from home and bruised from a love affair gone horribly wrong, Betty finds comfort in caring for the child, and warms to the attentions of handsome sailor Henrik, sometimes known as Red. Then, Charlie disappears. Suddenly a suspect in the eyes of both the media and the public, Betty must find the truth about what really happened that night, in order to clear her own name—and to find justice for the child she loves. In this episode, Mariah and I discussed the person of Betty Gow, Charles Lindbergh, Sr.'s strange childrearing ideas, Mariah's own theory regarding the case, and how she began writing historical fiction. In the age of Internet shopping, retail is an increasingly difficult way to make a living. When shoppers don't care if you're local and, no matter where they live, want current fashion and accessories at a fair price, how does a local business compete? Scott Berg says it starts with service. Scott has other strategies too, and proven successes to back them up. Scott is Baton Rouge Market President of Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry, including a Pandora franchise in the Mall of Louisiana. Scott was just a two-year-old when his father, Lee Michael Berg, opened the first Lee Michaels in Cortana Mall in 1978. Today Scott and his dad work closely together, and Scott's 15 year old has some design ideas of her own. Scott's daughter could learn clothing design and manufacture with Andrea Eastin. Andrea's company, Fair Fit, is a boutique fashion design studio with classes that teach people of all ages and both genders to sew, design and customize our own clothing. And you might be surprised to learn that a good number of Baton Rouge men are sitting down designing and sewing their own clothes. We often talk about Baton Rouge developing its own signature style these days. Scott Berg and Andrea Eastin are part of that emerging independent style. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. You can see photos from this by Ken Stewart at our website. Here's more lunchtime conversation about local couture. In the age of Internet shopping, retail is an increasingly difficult way to make a living. When shoppers don t care if you re local and, no matter where they live, want current fashion and accessories at a fair price, how does a local business compete Scott Berg says it starts with service. Scott has other strategies too, and proven successes to back them up. Scott is Baton Rouge Market President of Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry including a Pandora franchise in the Mall of Louisiana. Scott was just a two year old when his father, Lee Michael Berg, opened the first Lee Michaels in Cortana Mall in 1978. Today Scott and his dad work closely together, and Scott s 12 year old has some design ideas of her own. Scott s daughter could learn clothing design and manufacture with Andrea Eastin. Andrea s company, Fair Fit, is a boutique fashion design studio with classes that teach people of all ages and both genders to sew, design and customize our own clothing. You might be surprised to learn that a good number of Baton Rouge men are siitting down designing and sewing their own clothes. We often talk about Baton Rouge developing its own signature style these days. Scott Berg and Andrea Eastin are part of that emerging sovering independent syle. Last week President Obama, in addressing the issue of Syria, talked about America's unique role in the world.  Russian President Putin would go on to criticize the idea of American exceptionalism.  The fact is that Obama's commitment to and Putin's criticism of America's place in the world, has its roots in the ideas of our 28th President, Woodrow Wilson.  Inaugurated 100 years ago. In urging Congress to enter WWI, Wilson talked about the need to make the world "safe for democracy."  In so doing, he perhaps inadvertently laid the predicate for the next century of US foreign policy and an idealism that often went beyond America's direct national interests. He would come to define the modern activist Presidency, and would lay the groundwork for a broader role for the federal government. He did it all coming to office with a minimum of political experience, accusations of elitism, racism and a disregard for civil liberties.  Still, he ranks as one of our great Presidents. The how and why of this is embedded in A. Scott Berg's sweeping biography Wilson, thirteen years in the making.A Scott Berg is a best selling biographer, a winner of the NationalBook Award and the Pulitzer Prize. My conversation with Scott Berg:

In 1791 George Washington asked Pierre Charles L'Enfant, who had been a French volunteer during the American Revolution, to design a new federal city on the Potomac for the young republic. Suffering from constant interference, L'Enfant persisted in his work for a year before being dismissed. Yet, his ambitious geometrical plan for the District of Columbia survived and endures to this day. In Grand Avenues, Scott W.
