In today's episode of Category Visionaries, we speak with Ashish Nagar, CEO of Level AI, a contact center software platform that's raised over $35 Million in funding, about why machine learning might just finally be the customer service solution the market has been searching for. AI has come a long way in recent years, with increasingly sophisticated solutions available to emulate the human experience, and Level AI promises an automated system for analyzing and enhancing the customer service experience, particularly for companies with complex customer service needs in sectors like healthcare, finance and travel. We also spoke about how AI is shifting from traditional language development models, the challenge of brands competing to differentiate themselves on customer service, and how Level AI manages to stand out in an oversaturated, highly commodified marketplace. 10 years ago the idea of having a meaningful conversation with a machine was the stuff of science fiction, but it looks set now to be the customer service solution of tomorrow. Topics Discussed: How a product-focused background helped Ashish pioneer the customer service AI system The current state of conversational AI, and how recent developments promise some exciting transformations in how we relate to machine-led systems Why so many businesses have sub-par customer service systems, and how automation could offer a solution to the problems for all the parties involved Taking a product to market in an overcrowded space, including education and careful positioning for the future Why inertia has set in in how we implement customer service, and why it can be a real challenge to implement wholesale transformations alongside existing operational needs The future of AI, and how the jump from simple reasoning to complex analysis is the real holy grail on the horizon   Favorite book:  Leadership: In Turbulent Times

Dr. Amer Kaissi is an award-winning Professor of Healthcare Administration at Trinity University, Speaker, Executive Coach, and author of Humbitious. A good leader often has a healthy balance of low ego and high ambition. If you're looking to create long-lasting change and longevity in a company, it comes down to balancing the humbitious approach. Amer shares how busy business leaders can experience a sense of profound transcendence, get their ego in check, and practice a bit of humility.   Key Takeaways [2:30] Dr. Amer grew up during the Lebanese civil war and he shares how this profound experience has shaped the way he thinks about leadership today. [6:25] Jim Collins proposed a concept of Level 5 leadership, and this framework shaped a lot of what Dr. Amer's book, Humbitious, is about. [8:35] In the short term, power and ego are very important. However, long-term leadership effectiveness has the humbitious approach. [11:10] The aggressive leader vs. the passive leader. Neither is a good approach, but every leader must find a balance between the two. [15:00] Dr. Amer shares strategies to work through imposter syndrome. [18:55] Genuine humility can be an indicator of a lack of confidence. These leaders need to have their voices heard. [20:45] Humble leaders might not feel the need to step up for themselves, but if you frame it from the advantage of the team, they will begin to understand why it's important to speak up. [27:50] Dr. Amer shares the important impact of love in the workplace. [30:30] It was not too long ago that leaders would give advice to management to never show emotions because it was perceived as weak. Dr. Amer admits this is horrible advice. [31:30] Dr. Amer explores the importance of human touch in the workplace. Leaders are often afraid to have it be seen as an HR complaint. [33:30] We overcomplicate certain topics because we're too afraid to have the conversation. Do you want to touch? Have the conversation. [34:55] Dr. Amer shares what role “transcendence” plays in a leader's emotional wellbeing. [36:10] When you're deep in nature, it can almost feel like your own ego is dissolving. [37:15] Arrogance can make you feel like you're the center of the universe. [39:20] If you want to lead, you have to read. [41:35] Listener challenge: Humility is a strength, not a weakness. It's a superpower when combined with ambition.   Quotable Quotes “Leaders who combine humility with ambition are those who will leave a long-lasting impact.” “Take some time to think about what you've achieved in the last five years. Most people who have imposter thoughts are comparing themselves to an ideal version that's impossible to achieve.” “As we all know as coaches, a strength that's overused becomes a weakness.” “The research was very clear that the NBA teams that touched more and celebrated more ended up succeeding more.” “Pause and reflect on all the things that are bigger than you. That may be nature, but it could also be the whole universe, history, or God.”   Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Amerkaissi.com Dr. Amer on LinkedIn Dr. Amer on Twitter Grab Dr. Amer's book: Humbitious: The Power of Low-Ego, High-Drive Leadership Jimcollins.com Jeffreypfeffer.com Leadership: In Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin

Don't miss this vblog on YouTube or catch our Read This segment of our One Thing Series podcast--books you need to read to lead better and grow faster. Featured Author: Doris Kearns Goodwin Featured Books: Leadership: In Turbulent Times Why We Love This Book for School Leaders We love this book for school leaders, especially now, because Kearns draws on the skills and attributes of four American presidents--Abraham Lincoln, Theodre Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson--who encountered times of confusion, fear, despair, and hope. Leadership: In Turbulent Times is destined to be a classic. Here are just a few reasons to pick it up: The author points out the specific traits that make for a successful leader in any organization. For example, we learn that not only was Lincoln ambitious--running for the office of the presidency at age 23--he had “the motivation and willpower to develop every talent he possessed to the fullest.” This is something that school leaders can emulate and model to develop a learning culture for themselves and others. Reflection Question: What learning experiences do you have lined up for this year that will help to develop your talents to the fullest? The last four chapters are a ton of fun, including transformational leadership, crisis management, turnaround leadership, and visionary leadership. It's almost like this book was written exclusively for school leaders, although it's universal to any organization. Reflection Question: How will you communicate your vision for change in your school this year? Lastly, this is an incredible book to lead a book study on with other educational leaders. Kearns Goodwin is remarkable about describing each leader's journey. As we move into our second school year filled with uncertainty and doubt, having candid leadership conversations that go beyond procedures and processes, and into the heart of tough decision-making, can prove to be invaluable. Reflection Question: How will you support others this year along their leadership journey? Becoming a Better School Leader During a Disruptive Time in Education Another book that we recommend in this ReadThisSeries episode is Leading Schools in Disruptive Times: How to Survive Hyper-Change by Mark White and Dwight Carter. We appreciate this book because it redefines certain aspects of school leadership for those who are experiencing overload and demands beyond control. The authors have a CAT strategy--coping, adjusting, and transforming--strategy that they embed within the conversation about school safety. Safety is no longer just about the physical aspects of school violence but also the psychological safety that students need to be effective learners. This point and many others make the book an important read for all school leaders. Let us know what you think, and don't miss our podcast episode with Dwight Carter. Today on the podcast we interview Nick Petrie, Author of Work Without Stress: Building Resilience for Long-Term Success. Whereas many teams fail under stress there are certain teams that build resilience and can actually thrive under stressful conditions. Nick shares with us the secrets of how hybrid and virtual teams confront today's turbulence, focus on strengthening their relationships, looking for new opportunities and reframing to take advantage of the disruptions in today's new work environment.Responding to Hardship DifferentlyEveryone initially has the same response when faced with a difficult experience. At first, everyone has a big drop off, and their typical levels of functioning and results go down across the board. Meanwhile, after the initial hit of hardship, people begin to respond in different ways. Some People Struggle to Recover At All: The Crisis PhaseSome People Partially Recover or Recover, But Come out of Hardship Looking Exactly the Same: The No Change PhaseSome People Not Only Bounce Back, They Become Anti-Fragiles: The Opportunist PhaseThe Widening Leadership GapThe Poor Performing Leaders are Struggling Even WorseIn the office, if you didn’t have good one-on-one meetings with your people before, that was bad. If you’re not doing it now, it’s disastrous. The same is true for a leaders’ practices. The ties that were weak have dwindled and died in the remote setting; people are not meeting anyone from other departments, and they are not meeting in the cafeteria at lunch. There are even many people who joined in the last year and who have never actually met someone from their company in person. The Strong Leaders Are Feeling Better Than Ever BeforeThe strong leaders are feeling closer to their teams than ever before. Strong leaders have built deeper connections and ties with their teams. These leaders are getting their teams to think strategically about what their networks need to look like across the organization. These leaders then create intentional plans for people to interact to build these relationships. Research on Stress & Resiliency: Is Stress and Tension the Same? Why is it that two people can go through the same event and one person gets stressed and overwhelmed but the other person is fine? Events don’t equal stress. There is a difference between pressure and stress and we usually put them together like they’re the same thing. Pressure is defined as an external demand in your environment. When people ruminate on the pressure, they convert the pressure into stress, which impacts their health and well-being. Leaders need to distinguish these two terms, and come up with strategies that prevent rumination to build resilience. The Redefining Mindset: A Phase of Re-Exploration in LeadershipMany Leaders reach a level of success where they find themselves asking, “is this all there is?” These leaders have accomplished everything they thought was going to make them happy, but they still don’t feel fulfilled and begin to burn out. This phase can mimic a mid-life crisis. Nick helps leaders see where they are on these developmental stages. By discovering what this phase is, leaders often feel relieved. They realize they’re not losing motivation, they’ve just moved to a new developmental stage as a leader and adult.  An In-Person 360˚ Assessment? Nick recommends that leaders dedicate time to seek in-person 360˚ Feedback.  Learn more inside the episode or read the full summary on our blog.

How to optimize already existing cash flows and budgets, and how to integrate new contingency plans into the company's current structure. In the media business employees are the most valuable asset the company has. Therefore, it is the company and consequently the team leader's responsibility to ensure that employees can perform at their best level. Doris Kearns Goodwin, I have a question for you. Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? As the impeachment train wends its way down the tracks these questions and more seem uniquely relevant. And it is the reason why I invited historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the author of LEADERSHIP IN TURBULENT TIMES to discuss Donald Trump, leadership, and so much more this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, posted at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com. And, as we do every week, my partner in politics former White House corespondent, Matthew Cooper and I will slice and dice all things politics. In her #1 New York Times bestseller, LEADERSHIP IN TURBULENT TIMES, now out in paperback, Doris Kearns Goodwin combines her signature storytelling with essential lessons from four of our nation's presidents—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson. She writes that no common pattern describes the trajectory of leadership. Although set apart in background, abilities, and temperament, these men shared a fierce ambition and a deep-seated resilience that enabled them to surmount uncommon adversity. At their best, all four were guided by a sense of moral purpose. And then there was Donald Trump. Are leadership and moral purpose a thing of the past? My good friend and Pulitzer Prize winning author and baseball aficionado, Doris Kearns Goodwin joins me on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show. Do tune in!Doris Kearns Goodwin, LEADERSHIP IN TURBULENT TIMES, Donald Trump, impeachment, political news, Lindsey Graham, Ukraine, quid pro quo…we tackle it all this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show always available at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com and on all your favorite apps.

In our last +1, we talked about the wonderful little book-gift I received from Cal Newport and we reflected on a particular passage from that book (Leadership: In Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin) that really jumped out and grabbed me.   The essence of that passage?   Our presidential luminaries differed in many ways. But they ALL shared a “fierce ambition.”   Of the heroic kind.   Today I’d like to talk about another passage from the book. This one’s from page 106. I actually STARTED reading the book on this page because, in his thoughtful gift note, Cal told me that the wisdom on that particular page made him think of me and of our recent chats.   Here’s how page 106 starts: “What fired in Lincoln this furious and fertile time of self-improvement? The answer lay in his readiness to gaze in the mirror and soberly scrutinize himself. Taking stock, he found himself wanting. From the beginning, young Lincoln aspired to nothing less than to inscribe his name into the book of communal memory. To fulfill what he believed to be his destiny, a different kind of sustained effort and discipline was required, a willingness to confront weakness and imperfection, reflect upon failure, and examine the kind of leader he wanted to be.   The passage continues: “The diligence and studiousness he exhibited during this period of introspection would have been remarkable in a young student; in a man of forty, it was astounding.”   Um. Yah.    That’s powerful.   (btw: Self-efficacy 101 style, this is one of the reasons reading biographies of great humans is such a wise thing to do—we gain strength in other people’s examples!!)   That passage is from Part II of the book in which we learn about all the EXTRAORDINARY (!) challenges our heroes faced in their quests to fulfill their destinies.    (Lincoln’s was dramatic. He was so depressed after letting down his constituents in Illinois after his tenure as a state legislator that his friends feared for his life and removed every sharp object from his house.)   Fierce ambition.   Equally huge failure.   Then what?   Then our hero doesn’t feel like a hero.   Then what?   Then he (or she) gets to work.    As we’ve discussed countless times, this isn’t supposed to be easy. (And, thinking that it should be easy is probably the biggest challenge we face.)    Echo: We’re not sidestepping lizards en route to our destiny. We’re battling dragons.    As such, building our heroic strength for two demands a FIERCE commitment to self-improvement (Optimizing!!) to match that fierce ambition to make a difference.   As Lincoln said, “I must die or be better.”   Today’s +1.   How about YOU?   How’s your fierce ambition?   And…    How’s your strength-building going?   Here’s to having the audacity to dream big and the heroic humility and self-mastery to do the work we need to do so we can most fully give ourselves to the world.   Starting Today.   Continuing forever.    +1. +1. +1.

Are great leaders born or made? Do circumstances make great leaders or do great leaders change the times? These are a few of the big picture questions my guest explores in her latest book. Her name is Doris Kearns Goodwin, she’s a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, and in her latest book, Leadership: In Turbulent Times, she explores the makings of great leaders by looking at the biographies of four US presidents who led the country through periods of crisis: Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson. We begin our conversation discussing the ambition all four of these leaders had as young men to do something great and how they connected their personal ambition to the greater good. We then discuss the personal setbacks all of them experienced early in life and how these challenges influenced them as leaders. Doris then shares the leadership traits and skills all of them implemented during their presidencies as well as how they did things differently. We end our conversation discussing whether any other leader could have managed the crisis each of these presidents confronted or if these men were singularly suited to the circumstances. If you’ve got a question, Doris Kearns Goodwin has a charming, insightful, well-told presidential anecdote for you. Actually, a couple of them. I interviewed the Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian live onstage for the release of her new book, Leadership: In Turbulent Times, and left the building slightly in awe: Some people are truly masterful storytellers, and Goodwin is one of them. In the book, Goodwin examines how Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson became the men we remember. She focuses, in particular, on the periods of suffering that softened them, eras that preceded the soaring leadership etched into history. Threaded through the book’s pages, then, is a lot of pain, a lot of mental illness, a lot of uncertainty. That opened space for a conversation about the recurrent link between the presidency and mental illness, about how Goodwin researches the personal lives of presidents, about who the best analogues to our current president may be, about how history will have to be researched and written differently in an age when few write letters but text constantly. Goodwin makes the humanity of our past vivid enough that it is able to provide ballast, just for a moment, to the inhumanity of our present. Enjoy! In her new book on presidential leadership, Pulitzer Prize winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin asks: Do leaders shape the times or do the times summon their leaders? Goodwin argues persuasively that while great presidents were highly ambitious and driven to succeed, they also overcame devastating personal setbacks to lead the country through the most difficult challenges our republic has ever faced. In Leadership in Turbulent Times, Goodwin chronicles Lincoln’s struggles with depression and his handling of the Civil War. She explores how Theodore Roosevelt’s leadership philosophy changed after his young wife and his mother died on the same day, and how he went on to broker a settlement in a potentially crippling coal strike. She writes of Franklin Roosevelt’s struggle with polio, and his decisive moves to end the Depression and win World War II.Goodwin’s explication of Lyndon Johnson’s unsurpassed achievements in the wake of John F. Kennedy’s assassination are informed by her working relationship with LBJ, which included a stint as a White House Fellow, and later, assisting Johnson with his memoirs. LBJ’s legislative record, particularly in the area of Civil Rights, remains unparalleled. In her latest book, Dr. Goodwin examines what each of these men can teach us about the nature of leadership. She demonstrates with authority, acuity and grace just how important compassionate, informed, and nuanced leadership is to the vitality and future of our country. She will be speaking about it Sunday night at the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore. That event is sold out.

FORGED IN CRISIS The Power of Courageous Leadership In Turbulent Times by Harvard Business School historian Nancy Koehn For leaders in the 21st century, there is one pressing question: What set of skills is required to lead in crisis, and can history give us answers? Harvard Business School historian and professor Nancy Koehn has surveyed some of history’s greatest leaders and made an incredible discovery: courageous leaders are not born but made, and the power to lead resides in each of us. Forged in Crisis is the dramatic, insightful epic that can teach anyone how to develop remarkable leadership skills. We live in a time when faith and confidence in leaders—whether in government, business, or religion—is nil. People sense with growing unease that everything is at stake—long-formed international alliances, the economy, a unified Europe, even the fate of the planet—and yet the highest offices across the globe are occupied by the inexperienced and untested, those who lack the decency, decorum, and courage required of the positions they hold. We’re led by people we cannot fully trust and the pressing questions are great: what set of skills is required to lead, both in times of stability and of crisis? What traits must we seek in those to whom we hand our fate? How do we become the types of leaders the world needs right now? In her masterly new book FORGED IN CRISIS: The Power of Courageous Leadership in Turbulent Times, celebrated Harvard Business School historian Nancy Koehn delivers in-depth portraits of five of history’s most brilliant leaders, spotlighting the diverse skills they relied on to lead, especially in moments of crisis. Based on personal letters, diaries, archival material, and official records, Forged in Crisis presents the remarkable life journeys of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton; President Abraham Lincoln; legendary abolitionist Frederick Douglass; Nazi-resisting clergyman Dietrich Bonhoeffer; and environmental crusader Rachel Carson—united here in their struggle to transform from ordinary people into great leaders. Koehn begins each of the book’s five sections by showing its protagonist on the precipice of a great crisis: Shackleton marooned on an Antarctic ice floe; Lincoln on the verge of seeing the Union collapse; escaped slave Douglass facing possible capture; Bonhoeffer agonizing over how to counter absolute evil with faith; Carson racing against the cancer ravaging her in a bid to save the planet. The narrative then reaches back to each person’s childhood and shows the individual growing—step by step—into the person he or she will ultimately become. Readers observe the qualities that these icons draw on to not just meet but triumph over great challenges, in the process becoming real leaders. By examining how these qualities emerge, Forged in Crisis offers a remarkable template by which to judge the leaders of our own time. Koehn also delivers an inspiring and important reminder that great leaders are made, not born, and that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things. In the vein of works by David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin, Forged in Crisis is a compelling historical narrative and a repository of great insight. More than that, it is a book that matters, perhaps now more than ever. Ten years in the writing, Forged in Crisis stands as a towering achievement.

In 2002, at the age of 29, Tameika became the first African American woman to serve on the city council. She still serves on the city council, and has overseen dramatic weather events, civil action (recently in the form of the removal of the confederate flag), and the church shooting that made international headlines. During these events, Tameika has not simply presided over these events, but actively worked within her community to help recover from, or otherwise make sense of them. Graham and Tameika also discuss her take on work-life integration, including defining and managing goals, measuring success, avoiding burnout and saying “no”.
