For Episode 469, Josh Parham, Giovanni Lago, Daniel Howat, and Tom O'Brien join me for what is one of the biggest episodes of the year. We knew heading into this week we would have to discuss the Gotham, NYFCC, and NBR winners, the AFI Top 10 films of the year, the CCA and Spirit Award nominations, and briefly touch on the Golden Globe Award nominations before they're announced. But then the industry dropped a bombshell: Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., a power move that threatens to be a seismic shift across the industry, with many implications for the future. For this week's poll, we ask our famous question: "Which Film Do You Think is Going To Be The Next Best Picture Oscar Winner?" We also reveal the winner of last week's poll, for the release of "Jay Kelly," where we asked, "Which Is Your Favorite George Clooney Performance?" In addition, we share our reactions to the trailers for "Mother Mary," "Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come," "Scarlet," "Midwinter Break," answer your fan-submitted questions, and more. Thank you all for listening, supporting, and subscribing, especially for episodes this massive. We really appreciate it. Enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... It's been a big first week of December with no less than five sets of critics groups announcing winners and nominations as we kick off the next three months of nonstop awards season. On episode 318 I am joined by AwardsWatch Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to break down the awards landscape and more. Before we get into that we have to talk about the other huge piece of news this week and that was yesterday's announcement that Netflix had won the battle to buy Warner Bros and all of its properties, which includes the DC Universe films and HBO/HBO Max. Unsurprisingly, there is no one on the podcast thinks this move is a good idea and sees the Netflix model as intentionally destructive of the theatrical model. Next we move the Critics Choice Awards nominations, announced this morning, where Sinners and One Battle After Another lead the way, where Sentimental Value and Hamnet made comebacks and where Wicked: For Good faltered. Then it's onto the AFI and NBR lists, the New York Film Critics and the Gotham Awards, where Sophia gives her in the room insight of the event. This podcast runs 1h 18m You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. Music: "Modern Fashion" from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), "B-3" from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
It was the first Oscar hopeful to debut in 2025 — 'Sinners' is still a favorite and a strong contender for Best Picture, Director, and Actor nominations. Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan join Awardist host Gerrad Hall to chat about their fifth movie together, how Jordan playing twins complicated their process, what Coogler discovered about the movie by filming the end-credits scene on day one, and more. Plus, Gerrad and EW Sr. Editor Joyce Eng break down all of the latest awards action, from the Gothams and National Board of Review winners to the Spirit Award nominations. Plus, they reveal their thoughts on 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' and Miley Cyrus shares insight into how she wrote her original song for the movie. Learn more about your ad choices. For Episode 468, Cody Dericks, Nadia Dalimonte and Giovanni Lago join me for a packed week of awards season predictions as December looms around the corner and the precursors for the 98th Academy Awards officially begin. We predict the Gotham Awards, New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC), Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), and National Board of Review (NBR) winners, along with what we believe will place in the AFI Top 10 films of the year. We also attempt to predict the likely nominees for the Critics' Choice Awards (CCA) and the Film Independent Spirit Awards. For this week's poll, in celebration of the release of "Jay Kelly," we ask: "Which Is Your Favorite George Clooney Performance?" We also reveal the winner of last week's poll, in which we asked, "Which Films Will Be Oscar-Nominated For Best International Feature Film At The 98th Academy Awards?" In addition, we share our reactions to the trailers for "How To Make A Killing" and "Goat," answer your fan-submitted questions, and more. Thank you all for listening, supporting, and subscribing. The CrossFit Open typically shines a spotlight on elite athletes, but what about the everyday heroes who truly define a CrossFit community? Coaches David Syvertsen @davesy85 and Sam Rhee @bergencosmetic take us behind the scenes of the Bison Beast Awards – their gym's annual recognition of members who embody CrossFit's spirit beyond the leaderboard.Meet Ella Kinney, the community cornerstone who's always first to volunteer and last to leave, knitting together friendships throughout the gym. Then there's Scott Rosson, who suffered a heart attack during Open workout 25.3 yet asked about his score from the hospital bed hours later – not from competitive obsession but from unwavering commitment to his community. These are the first recipients of the newly renamed Steve Rice Bison Spirit Award, honoring a beloved member recently lost. The stories continue with Lisa Skawinski, who finally participated in her first Open after doing CrossFit since 2016, crushing workouts at the day's end despite exhaustion from work and family responsibilities. Fourteen-year-old Yaya Gusfa earned Rookie of the Year by showing up at 6AM four days weekly, demonstrating remarkable maturity beyond his years. Most Improved Athletes Alandra Greenlee and Brendan Mcgrail made incredible competitive leaps while balancing life's demands, while Matt Aquino earned Comeback of the Year by returning from emergent back surgery to achieve his best Open performance in a decade. The episode concludes with a thoughtful critique of CrossFit's controversial new online judging system, where community verification meets potential manipulation. David and Sam offer practical solutions to preserve competitive integrity while honoring the sport's true heart – the everyday athletes who show up, support each other, and overcome obstacles without fanfare. The awards season is in full swing, and we're diving into all the glitz, glamour, and surprises of the Spirit Awards, SAG Awards, and NAACP Awards!
Original Release Date: Monday 24 February 2025 Description: Your friends in podcasting have two more shows before they make their way (separately) to Europe and reconvene in Denmark! So, understandably, they have a full discussion agenda for this week's show. They discuss the theft of thousands of art works from Venice and how a 1954 cinematic masterpiece helped in the reconstruction of one of the landmark buildings of that city. They discuss TWO "Live Events of the Week" and in so doing, discuss Shakespeare, Armin Shimmerman, and two of the most legendary Los Angeles stage actors. In "Celebrity Deaths" a chart-topping singer-turned-elected official gets remembered, as does a prolific character actor, a groundbreaking African filmmaker, and an influential poet and multimedia artist of the Beat era. The "SNL50" special gets discussed, as does an excellent new sports documentary series on Netflix. Finally, this weekend's Spirit Awards (honoring the best in independent cinema) gets analyzed, and one of the most acclaimed animated films of 2024, one of the most acclaimed international films of 2024, and one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2024 all get reviewed.
Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio discuss who could win big at the 2025 Spirit Awards. Plus Ryan visit to Berlinale, Oscar shorts reviews and the state of the James Bond franchise. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On episode 276 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, AW's Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello break down the 2025 BAFTA winners and give a preview and their predictions of next week's SAG Awards. A very spread-the-wealth year, BAFTA gave no film more than four wins, including a split Best Film and Best Director, with Conclave claiming the former and Brady Corbet the latter for The Brutalist, the two films to to earn those four BAFTAs. No real surprises in the Leading Actor (Adrien Brody), Supporting Actor (Kieran Culkin) and Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) races but when Anora won the Casting award early on it was the bellwether for Mikey Madison's 'surprise' win for Leading Actress at the end of the night over Demi Moore (The Substance). A Real Pain's historically significant triumph over Anora in Original Screenplay also set up what will be one of the most competitive Oscar races on March 2 as winner voting ends tomorrow. We jump over to SAG, a conversation that mirrors BAFTA a bit, where we all feel strongly for three frontrunners and each make cases for Madison, Moore and the outside spoiler of a Cynthia Erivo. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h13m. We will be back next week to talk the results of the back-to-back Spirit Awards and SAG Awards and reveal our final Oscar predictions of the season. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

The director Jane Schoenbrun first became known for their 2021 movie “We're All Going to the World's Fair,” which tapped into a teenaged fascination with the culture of viral memes. Jane's latest film, “I Saw the TV Glow,” follows two suburban teens who get emotionally enmeshed in a fictional ‘90s TV show called “The Pink Opaque.” The result is a moody investigation of identity, growing up and making decisions about who you want to be. “I Saw the TV Glow” was recently nominated for six Spirit Awards, including best feature and best director. We revisit Tom Power's conversation with Jane about the film, how it relates to transness and their own experience getting intertwined in TV shows as they grew up.

For episode 217, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski behind the scenes as usual. This time around, we're largely talking about the first wave of precursor awards. As always, I'm mostly cautioning you to take them with a grain of salt, but between the Gothams, Spirit Awards, and more, there's things to discuss. Myles also caught up with Juror #2 (my review is here), while I speak on The End (reviewed here) and Flow (review coming shortly). Throw in some questions and it's an episode actually about awards season/precursor season. Huzzah... As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 217th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

Arthouse Tuesday is back! We know how much you love it, so we review a couple of indies this week that are in limited release before expanding nationwide. We have a slightly early review of "We Grown Now," which received Spirit Award nominations this year for best feature, cinematography and editing. The gorgeous coming-of-age drama follows a friendship in flux between two tween boys in Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing project. It opens Friday in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago before going wider on April 26. Click here to find out more: https://www.sonyclassics.com/film/wegrownnow/ Then we discuss "Sasquatch Sunset," the latest ambitious project from the filmmaking Zellner brothers, David and Nathan. Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough lead a pack of Bigfoots (or is it Bigfeet?) as they traipse through the forest. This extremely languid dramedy is daring and dialogue-free. It's currently in a few cities before going nationwide this Friday. Click here to see if it's playing near you: https://bleeckerstreetmedia.com/sasquatch-sunset And for our Patreon subscribers, we catch up with episodes 3 and 4 of "Shōgun" on Hulu. We're feeling especially spicy with an extra-long Friday episode of Breakfast All Day. Alonso and Christy have an early, spoiler-free review of "Dune: Part Two," which has IMAX sneaks on Sunday night before opening everywhere March 1. It's an astonishing achievement -- even more so than Denis Villeneuve's 2021 "Dune: Part One" -- and you must experience it on the biggest screen you can find with the best possible sound. We also review the messy comedy "Drive-Away Dolls," which finds Ethan Coen directing for the first time without brother Joel. Of course, we couldn't miss "Tyler Perry's Mea Culpa," since we're completists of the auteur. Perry's homage to steamy erotic thrillers of the '90s is streaming on Netflix. As always on Fridays, we begin with Movie News Live!, which includes a look ahead to the weekend's Spirit Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. And for our Patreon subscribers, a recap of this week's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," which follows Truman on a magical day in Manhattan with the formidable James Baldwin. We review the best movie of the year on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. Christy and Alonso both loved "Poor Things," the latest from Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. And while we realize that it's super boring when we agree, we're both going to end up putting this at the top of our best of 2023 lists. We also catch up on some movie news, including Spirit Award nominations, Beyoncé's "Renaissance" box office, Disney giving up on "The Marvels," and that thrilling "Furiosa" trailer.
