Original Release Date: Monday 24 February 2025 Description: Your friends in podcasting have two more shows before they make their way (separately) to Europe and reconvene in Denmark! So, understandably, they have a full discussion agenda for this week's show. They discuss the theft of thousands of art works from Venice and how a 1954 cinematic masterpiece helped in the reconstruction of one of the landmark buildings of that city. They discuss TWO "Live Events of the Week" and in so doing, discuss Shakespeare, Armin Shimmerman, and two of the most legendary Los Angeles stage actors. In "Celebrity Deaths" a chart-topping singer-turned-elected official gets remembered, as does a prolific character actor, a groundbreaking African filmmaker, and an influential poet and multimedia artist of the Beat era. The "SNL50" special gets discussed, as does an excellent new sports documentary series on Netflix. Finally, this weekend's Spirit Awards (honoring the best in independent cinema) gets analyzed, and one of the most acclaimed animated films of 2024, one of the most acclaimed international films of 2024, and one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2024 all get reviewed.
Patreon Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On episode 276 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, AW's Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello break down the 2025 BAFTA winners and give a preview and their predictions of next week's SAG Awards. A very spread-the-wealth year, BAFTA gave no film more than four wins, including a split Best Film and Best Director, with Conclave claiming the former and Brady Corbet the latter for The Brutalist, the two films to to earn those four BAFTAs. No real surprises in the Leading Actor (Adrien Brody), Supporting Actor (Kieran Culkin) and Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) races but when Anora won the Casting award early on it was the bellwether for Mikey Madison's 'surprise' win for Leading Actress at the end of the night over Demi Moore (The Substance). A Real Pain's historically significant triumph over Anora in Original Screenplay also set up what will be one of the most competitive Oscar races on March 2 as winner voting ends tomorrow. We jump over to SAG, a conversation that mirrors BAFTA a bit, where we all feel strongly for three frontrunners and each make cases for Madison, Moore and the outside spoiler of a Cynthia Erivo. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h13m. We will be back next week to talk the results of the back-to-back Spirit Awards and SAG Awards and reveal our final Oscar predictions of the season. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

The director Jane Schoenbrun first became known for their 2021 movie “We're All Going to the World's Fair,” which tapped into a teenaged fascination with the culture of viral memes. Jane's latest film, “I Saw the TV Glow,” follows two suburban teens who get emotionally enmeshed in a fictional ‘90s TV show called “The Pink Opaque.” The result is a moody investigation of identity, growing up and making decisions about who you want to be. “I Saw the TV Glow” was recently nominated for six Spirit Awards, including best feature and best director. We revisit Tom Power's conversation with Jane about the film, how it relates to transness and their own experience getting intertwined in TV shows as they grew up.

Awards season is here and we're here for it on Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Nightbitch," starring Amy Adams as a stay-at-home mom who escapes the doldrums of her daily routine by turning into a dog and rampaging through the neighborhood. We have very different opinions on the latest film from Marielle Heller. In theaters now. Then, we discuss "Y2K," a comedy/disaster movie set on the eve of the millennium. A bunch of teenagers try to survive when the machines rise up and wreak havoc. Kyle Mooney's film is based on an idea that wears thin pretty quickly. In theaters now. Finally, during our usual Friday livestream, we talked about all the awards season developments that occurred over the past week: Spirit Award nominations, Gothams, NY Film Critics Circle and more. It's gonna be a wild one! We won't be going live next Friday because Alonso is traveling, but keep an eye (and an ear) out for details on our annual Christmas Movie Livestream on Dec. 17. For episode 217, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski behind the scenes as usual. This time around, we're largely talking about the first wave of precursor awards. As always, I'm mostly cautioning you to take them with a grain of salt, but between the Gothams, Spirit Awards, and more, there's things to discuss. Myles also caught up with Juror #2 (my review is here), while I speak on The End (reviewed here) and Flow (review coming shortly). Throw in some questions and it's an episode actually about awards season/precursor season. Huzzah... As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 217th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

Director Tomas Gomez-Bustillo magical tale, CHRONICLES OF A WANDERING SAINT focuses on a tiny rural village in Argentina, where Rita Lopez, (Monica Villa) a pious yet insatiably competitive woman, decides that staging a miracle could be her ticket to sainthood. After discovering a lost statue in the back room of her chapel, she convinces her neglected but loving husband to help her orchestrate the grand reveal that will finally anoint her as the most admired woman in town. But before the unveiling, a jarring turn of events illuminates the hidden magic of her world, forcing her to reevaluate everything she once took for granted. Director / Screenwriter Tomas Gomez-Bustillo (Museum of Fleeting Wonders) stops by to talk about his inspiration for his delightfully off kilter, magical tale of flawed people doing very human things to and for one another, recruiting this wonderful cast of actors, led by Monica Villa, Horacio Moseinco, Dahyana Turkie, Noemi Ron and Ana Silvia Mackenzie, and his reaction to the three Spirit Award nominations in 2024. “It'll be just like in the movies. We'll pretend to be someone else.”A Winding Road to ProductionDavid Lynch's Mulholland Dr. started life as a television pilot for ABC, but when the network passed on the project, Lynch reworked it into a feature film. The resulting movie is a surreal, non-linear exploration of the dark side of Hollywood, blending elements of mystery, romance, and psychological horror. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2002 Film Independent Spirit Awards Best Cinematography Nominees series with a conversation about Mulholland Dr.Dreams, Illusions, and the Seedy Underbelly of TinseltownIn our discussion, we delve into the film's complex narrative structure and the various interpretations of its plot. At least how we see it. We examine how Lynch uses the concept of dreams and illusions to explore the characters' psyches and the darker aspects of the entertainment industry. The film's cinematography, nominated for a Spirit Award, is also a focal point of our conversation, as we analyze how Lynch and his team create a haunting, dreamlike atmosphere that enhances the story's themes.Unraveling the Mysteries of Mulholland Dr.The stellar performances of Naomi Watts and Laura Elena HarringThe film's origins as a television pilot and how it influences the final productLynch's refusal to explain the film's meaning and the audience's role in interpretationThe use of symbolism and recurring motifs throughout the narrativeA Mesmerizing Journey into the SubconsciousMulholland Dr. is a film that demands multiple viewings and encourages deep analysis. Its enigmatic nature and layered storytelling make it a prime example of Lynch's unique style and vision. While the movie's unconventional structure and surreal elements may not appeal to everyone, it remains a fascinating exploration of identity, dreams, and the dark side of ambition. Arthouse Tuesday is back! We know how much you love it, so we review a couple of indies this week that are in limited release before expanding nationwide. We have a slightly early review of "We Grown Now," which received Spirit Award nominations this year for best feature, cinematography and editing. The gorgeous coming-of-age drama follows a friendship in flux between two tween boys in Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing project. It opens Friday in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago before going wider on April 26. Click here to find out more: https://www.sonyclassics.com/film/wegrownnow/ Then we discuss "Sasquatch Sunset," the latest ambitious project from the filmmaking Zellner brothers, David and Nathan. Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough lead a pack of Bigfoots (or is it Bigfeet?) as they traipse through the forest. This extremely languid dramedy is daring and dialogue-free. It's currently in a few cities before going nationwide this Friday. Click here to see if it's playing near you: https://bleeckerstreetmedia.com/sasquatch-sunset And for our Patreon subscribers, we catch up with episodes 3 and 4 of "Shōgun" on Hulu. We're feeling especially spicy with an extra-long Friday episode of Breakfast All Day. Alonso and Christy have an early, spoiler-free review of "Dune: Part Two," which has IMAX sneaks on Sunday night before opening everywhere March 1. It's an astonishing achievement -- even more so than Denis Villeneuve's 2021 "Dune: Part One" -- and you must experience it on the biggest screen you can find with the best possible sound. We also review the messy comedy "Drive-Away Dolls," which finds Ethan Coen directing for the first time without brother Joel. Of course, we couldn't miss "Tyler Perry's Mea Culpa," since we're completists of the auteur. Perry's homage to steamy erotic thrillers of the '90s is streaming on Netflix. As always on Fridays, we begin with Movie News Live!, which includes a look ahead to the weekend's Spirit Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. And for our Patreon subscribers, a recap of this week's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," which follows Truman on a magical day in Manhattan with the formidable James Baldwin. I have been fortunate to interview Del Shores (Sordid Lives Creator) multiple times throughout the years. After working in the entertainment industry for more than three decades as a Director, Producer, and Writer, Del is finally making his NYC theatrical directorial debut with Jiggs Burgess' play Wounded.I am so excited to catch up with Del because I always have great conversations with him. An addict. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? played out between hummingbirds. And a pussy eating dog. This is Wounded. Carrol could've been somebody, after all his book, The Crimson Valise, was made into a movie. Yet somehow Carrol's unhealed past, and an aging mother, got in the way. On the other hand, Carrol's classmate, Robert, was smart and driven. Went to one of the best private universities in the country on scholarship. But his damage led him down the path of addiction and eventually prison.
