[School of Everything Else 2025] One of the most beloved 90s RPGs, and one of the few on Super Nintendo that was released in the UK. So, while I envied Americans for getting Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV and VI, Earthbound and Breath of Fire, THIS ONE was my first actual big console RPG. And it has problems; real playability issues that make it hard to recommend for everyone in the 20s. You'll find Mana fans who say that these don't matter, but they absolutely do. A fine comparison I came upon while mulling this one over was Breath of the Wild. Absolutely gorgeous, engrossing you in a luscious world dominated by fertile nature, but Link's swords breaking after half a dozen battles are not going to make the game more fun and engaging for everyone. And yet, there IS that immersion, there is the overwhelming emotional response that Mana fans have to the music and art style, and there's the undeniably satisfying THWACK of the combat. So, come on a journey with us and the three intrepid adventuring kids, Primm, Popoi and Randi, and decide whether playing Secret of Mana is right for you.

Nintendos Würfel feiert in diesen Wochen seinen 20. Geburtstag – und Games Insider feiert kräftig mit! Der GameCube sollte 2001 eigentlich Nintendos Rückkehr zum König unter den Konsolenherstellern werden, nachdem die Japaner zuvor mit dem Nintendo 64 gegen Sonys erste PlayStation chancenlos gewesen waren. Doch wie wir alle wissen, wurde nichts daraus; gegen die übermächtige PlayStation 2 und den Newcomer Xbox sah der GameCube in den frühen 2000er-Jahren kein Land. Und auch in der Nintendo-eigenen Verkaufszahlenrangliste liegt das Gerät deutlich hinter Erfolgssystemen wie Super Nintendo, Wii oder der Switch zurück. Dies ist umso bedauerlicher, weil für den GameCube einige exklusive und zum Teil auch heute noch sehr spielenswerte Titel erschienen sind – von Super Smash Bros. Melee, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II – Rogue Leader und Pikmin über Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime und The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker bis hin zu Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil 4 oder Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. VR and tabletop game designer from Small Rice Studios, Doug joins Ben this week to talk about the recently released cozy card game ROAST, which he designed along with his brother Nick (who Ben had the pleasure of meeting at PAX West 2024). Ben had some questions about the design, development, and testing of ROAST—all of which Doug is more than happy to elaborate on and discuss. The Robbins' family raised the money to have 5,000 copies of the game made, which he sold from his barbershop. Merle Robbins later sold the rights to UNO to a group of friends headed by Robert Tezak, a funeral parlor owner in Joliet, Illinois. Before RTG is done, we'll have covered all 11 core Mega Man games. And this week we're tackling what I consider to the the most underrated of the bunch: Mega Man 7 for the SNES. I think MM7 gets overlooked for a couple reasons. After 6 NES games, I think people might have been a little burnt out on the tried-and-true Mega Man formula. And more importantly, the Super Nintendo was the home of Mega Man X, which many consider to be the greatest Mega Man game of all-time. If you haven't played this one, don't sleep on it. The graphics are great, the music rocks, and in reality this is just an NES Mega Man in 16-bit glory. And that's all I wanted it to be. Joining me this is is a fellow podcaster and Mega Man junkie, my pal Dan from the Dissect That Film and Manawurm podcasts. What we thought would be a shorter episode turned into an hour long Mega Man loveliest, as we went through all the levels in this, the various weapons, and the cheese that is the final Wily fight. This is one of the finest 16-bit platforms I've ever played. One of those Genesis games that makes me jealous as a Super Nintendo kid. You control a possum in a suit of armour with a sword and a rocket pack, and you fight pigs as you travel from a village to outer space. I...well...it makes sense when you play it. Kinda. The controls are crisp and the rocket pack mechanic really takes the gameplay to the next level. Great variety between stages, an awesome soundtrack, sharp graphics, and it's the way all retro games should be: tough as fuck. I love this game. I crossed the retro podcast streams this week and asked Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast to join me, and we spent nearly an hour singing the praises of this possum and his adventures. I can say this game is a lock for my top 10 Genesis games now, and it's knocking on the door of the very exclusive top 5 club...
