Mark aka "Smelly" aka "The People's Coach" aka "Meathead Millionaire" is a world-record holding powerlifter with some outrageous lifts like a 1,086lb squat, 854lb bench, and 766lb deadlift. He credits much of his lifting success to his two older brothers, Louis Simmons from the one and only Westside Barbell, and other legends in the strength world like Ed Coan and Mike O'Hearn. Mark opened his own gym called Super Training Gym after moving his young family to northern California, where he has trained ever since. Mark leveraged his success in the powerlifting world to launch The Sling Shot, which is now an absolute powerhouse in the strength world, producing products that serve powerlifters. Aside from running Super Training Gym and Sling Shot, he hosts Mark Bell's Power Project Podcast, which is a Top 50 health and fitness podcast, and now sells his own supplement line which can be found on his website. Brandon Lilly is a strength coach and top ranked powerlifter. He was ranked as one of the strongest powerlifters of all time lifting over 2000 pounds in multiple classes. His Cube Method has also helped other men do the same and has helped women total over 1000 pounds. After a devastating knee injury that required Brandon to have 17 surgeries, he ended up in bed with time for reflection. During this time, he realized that his powerlifting had become an obsession, and he had let most other aspects of his life fall by the wayside. Addiction can take many forms, and it doesn’t have to only apply to drugs and alcohol. As Brandon explains, it can even apply to powerlifting. Show Notes: [03:37] Brandon started to recognize that addiction is somewhat woven into the fabric of human existence. We all have addictive qualities to some degree. [04:48] We've done a poor job of classifying people as broken, when they're not broken, they're just human. [05:12] Brandon was so addicted to powerlifting that he made choices for the progression of the sport not the progression of himself. Powerlifting consumed who he was and his life.  [06:24] Brandon had a catastrophic injury that required multiple knee surgeries. When he wasn't able to power lift, it gave him time to take a pause and think about all that he had given up in order to powerlift. [07:48] He knew the isolation and loneliness that he was feeling was going to be recurring if he didn't make some changes in his life. [10:38] The first step may be changing the food or the drink, but there has to be a second and third step. Patterns have to be broken. [16:38] Mark Bell had a similar experience when he was injured, and it was a pivotal moment in his life.  [18:51] Brandon experienced a lot of loss and wanted to use that to be the best in powerlifting, but he was alienating himself from his family while being obsessed with the sport.  [22:07] He had so many issues with his leg, because he wouldn't give up what was killing him. He should have only had 3 surgeries, but he had 17, because he wasn't taking care of himself.  [23:34] Brandon realized that he was exactly where he was, because that is where he put himself.  [24:30] For him, the powerlifting was a positive expression until it wasn't.  [26:24] We all have something that we are fighting against. Brandon was mad at the world for no reason.  [28:25] He was the smallest kid on the block and had a chip on his shoulder. He always felt like he needed more to be more. [33:01] Success doesn't happen quickly, it's better to build something for life.  [37:50] People have to decide they want help on their own and not be forced into it.  [42:55] It's no effort to do the things that you are truly doing for yourself.  [44:23] Brandon speaks for himself and doesn't want to be controversial. He doesn't fall into the trap of trying to impress people anymore. He's very real about his struggles. [52:18] It's important to have a community and find people who support you and help you reach your goals.  [59:09] Without the hard days, Brandon wouldn't be able to enjoy the sunrise that he enjoys now.  [01:06:31] If Brandon can make someone's life better with a smile, he'll smile. [01:07:06] Brandon got very strong very fast when he started powerlifting. He wanted to be liked, followed, and make a living. Now he just wants to be a functional human.  [01:08:29] His workouts now consist of two heavy days one upper and one lower, two rep days one upper and one lower, and two speed days one upper and one lower. He takes one day off  and also hikes three to four days a week. [01:12:51] Hold on and recognize the small miracles and things that matter. I am in West Sacramento, CA with Mark Bell of Super Training Gym. Mark is a powerlifter and entrepreneur who has had his own experiences with addiction. In this episode, Mark shares his early exposure to addiction and talks about how everybody needs something to hold onto while overcoming addiction. Mark shares all kinds of knowledge like how exercise and nutrition can make everything better and the importance of looking into why you have certain behaviors. Mark is a husband, father, gym owner, powerlifter, inventor, podcaster, and inspiring guy. This podcast is packed with knowledge and inspiration that will help anyone start to look at addiction in a different light and make positive changes towards their life. Show Notes [01:34] I am with Mark Bell of the Super Training Gym in West Sacramento, CA. [01:55] Training here has been a huge deal for me. I have been following Mark for 5 or 6 years. I wanted to get into powerlifting. [03:28] When people get clean and sober they want to change everything. I tell them to take it slow. The men always want to get jacked. [04:09] Mark's first experience with addiction. There was a lot in his family and he recognized it at a very young age. [04:56] Every year they dreaded going to Marks Mom's side of the family's house, but then they enjoyed going to his Dad's side of the family's house. [06:35] As a kid, Mark was always slightly uneasy when he went to his mom's family's house. [06:57] A lot of his mom's family struggled with addiction. [11:44] There's always a possibility that your child could end up being addicted to something. [12:48] Addicted people are no longer really in control. [14:22] If you are struggling with drugs and alcohol try to find one thing that you can hold on to like lifting weights or something. [16:21] When people give up drugs and alcohol it's like losing their best friend. [19:38] Sometimes Mark likes to get away from weight lifting and focus on his health. [21:33] A lot of great things happen when you're forced to do something. A strong why will help you figure out how. [25:08] Hold on to something and tell yourself that you have the discipline to do something until it is finished. [28:18] Why would you continue to do something that's harming other people in your life that you care for? [29:47] When you are addicted to something that suffocates you and consumes your life in your time. [36:48] People need to distinguish what being sober means to them. It's your own internal definition of what being sober means. Kratom could be a new addiction, it depends on why people use it. [42:34] Nutrition and exercise can be helpful towards any problem that you have. [44:40] What you put in your mouth is going to directly affect how you feel. [47:14] People in active addiction can't take ownership of anything and everything is someone else's fault. [49:04] Constant movement promotes constant movement. Do more be more. [50:11] Move a muscle change a thought. If you lay around on the couch all day that's exactly what you're going to get. [51:16] A 10-minute walk is a great life lesson because you can do 10 minutes of anything. [52:23] Look into why you're not doing the things that you should be doing. If you just do the things you're supposed to do, even if you don't want to do them, you will be so much further ahead of everyone else. [55:04] Coming clean with pornography addiction is very difficult. Even more difficult than coming clean with alcohol or drug use. [55:34] You have to be careful about what you put in your brain. [57:16]  Mark usually does his personal development stuff from 4 to 6 a.m. This includes drinking some water maybe going outside going for a walk or listening to a podcast. [59:10] He plans his days in advance, so he can get done what he wants to get done. [59:43] He then cooks for his kids, goes to some meetings, gets to work out, and create his podcast. [01:02:04] Mark tries to get people excited about fitness even though it's a long painful process. [01:02:50] Mark can take wisdom that he learned from lifting and apply it to other areas of life. [01:03:35] Gain knowledge on the things you love to do and have those be part of your life. [01:04:36] Everyone possesses the ability to learn, gain more knowledge, and be stronger. Our abilities are endless once we open up our minds. [01:05:20] The more you can learn about yourself the more you can help other people. [01:05:57] If you are struggling right now reach out and ask for help. [01:06:46] If you recognize that someone has an addiction problem, take them out to lunch and see what's going on. On today’s show, we talked to Mark Bell, the founder of Super Training Gym, Power Magazine and inventor of the Sling Shot. Mark is a former professional wrestler. He began lifting weights at age 11 and entered into powerlifting when he was 13. He has lifted 1,025lb squat, a 832lb bench press and a 738 lb deadlift. He explained to us how weight lifting affects your body. “Your arms are like shock absorbers,” he told Rob. “Your biceps and your forearms are there to help you absorb the shock of the weight on the way down.” Mark is pretty flexible with his diet, though he is a proponent of the Ketogenic diet. “We have become so addicted to refined sugars. That’s one of the most important things to cut out of your diet.” He believes the benefits to building muscle are much more extensive than merely engaging in cardio. “If you gain 5 lbs of muscle, it changes your metabolism in big ways,” he said.
