He is an active speaker, author, and instructor with 20 years of combined volunteer and career service. He also holds a B.S. in Fire Protection Administration and a M.A. in Organizational Leadership. Takeaways: Building relationships and trust is crucial for effective leadership. Leaders should give trust until it is proven otherwise, rather than making people earn it. Execution and experience are key factors in successful leadership. Followership is an important aspect of leadership that is often overlooked. Connection and communication between management and frontline firefighters are essential for a successful organization. Leadership is about doing what's right all the time, even when it clashes with the concept of being a good follower. Being a good follower sets the foundation for becoming a better leader. Leon Ben-Tzion is pretty bummed about having a grandpa name, especially when he realizes that the only other Leon he knows is his Saba (grandpa) Leon. When Saba Leon sits "Little Leon" down for a heart-to-heart and shows him the "Book of Lions" or Leons, Leon is pretty intrigued. Maybe having a "grandpa name" and carrying on the family tradition isn't so bad after all? Appearance – the way that someone or something looksWe've all heard the saying, “A real man doesn't care how he looks.” We all also know that saying is nonsense. How a man dresses and carries himself is vital. He cannot reasonably expect to gain approval or influence if he shows up looking messy, unkempt, or as if he simply doesn't care. How you appear is an outward manifestation of what you want others to see in you. Your appearance deserves to be taken seriously. As the author Charles Hix once said, “Looking good isn't self-importance; it's self-respect.” By learning to dress well, work on your posture, and take care of your physical condition, you will start to gain a level of confidence that will pay tremendous dividends both personally and professionally. In this episode of Untaming Masculinity, Dan and Brad discuss why a man needs to take pride in his appearance. They share some tips and tactics that have served them well in improving their appearance, from learning how to dress to giving a firm handshake. They share how taking action to improve their appearance has transformed their lives. They also discuss how you can start to develop your own style and what you can do to look your best in adopting that style.Follow Untaming Masculinity on your favorite podcast app, YouTube, and Instagram.Subscribe and ShareSubscribe to our YouTube channelConnect with Dan on Instagram and TwitterConnect with Brad on Instagram and TwitterFollow Untaming Masculinity on Instagram and TwitterJoin the Untaming Masculinity Facebook GroupPlease leave us a rating and review

We've been looking at how we view and feel about money and it keeps drawing me back to how influential our work is. We make money from the work we provide. From our efforts to help deliver a product or service. If we are not proud of the work we do. If we are not proud of the end product or service we help provide. If we are just doing it for the money…then the money we earn as a result, we have negative feelings about. The money itself becomes a focus of our frustration along with the work. This is far more than about money and about our personal self-approval. If you have any negative feelings about money, we'd have you consider how you feel about how you earn it. This is part three on my series about Ken Honda, Japan's number one self-help guru, and his focus on the energy we have around money, which is the topic of his super best-selling book, Happy Money: The Japanese Art of Making Peace With Your Money. My co-host for a peer discussion is Tom Ziglar. Tom is son to the inspirational legend, Zig Ziglar and The Ziglar Show is where this podcast evolved from. Tom is an expert in the workplace and in this episode we dig further into how our feelings about our work and how we earn money are foundational to our overall feelings of money and ourselves as a whole. We also discuss how we feel about spending money on undesired and unexpected expenses and how to better handle it when you are the one taking money for such expenses. According to a 2021 systematic review by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, members of the LGBTQ+ community have higher rates of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, substance abuse, and suicide, compared to the cis-heterosexual population. Beyond mental health, physical health was also seen to be compromised through a higher prevalence of cancers, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections. Though multi-factorial, the nuances of these statistics definitely have a root in the diminished quality of and access to healthcare among the queer community. Persistent stigma and discrimination and the fear of being subject to these from healthcare providers and institutions continue to bar members of the LGBTQ+ community from receiving and seeking the care that they need.We are joined today by Asia Sullivan, a board-certified physician assistant (now physician associate) working in the field of primary care, specializing in LGBTQ+ healthcare. Previously a professional model, she received her BS in Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2015, where she also received her Masters of Public Health and Physician Assistant studies in 2018, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She began her blog, Couture in Clinic, to document her journey through the amazing field of medicine. She now works closely with the queer population of Los Angeles, being a part of the community herself, where she provides education, treatment, and care of HIV/AIDS and PrEP/PEP, sexual health, and immunization as we do in this episode.Livestream Air Date: April 30, 2022Asia Sullivan, PA-C, MPH: IG @coutureinclinic & TikTok @coutureinclinicFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpod & FB @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian FranzThankful to the season's brand partners: Clove, BETR Remedies, Eko, Lumify, RescueMD, Medical School for Kids, Your Skincare Expert, Twrl Milk Tea

Creativity, Technology, and Making Geek ChicIn this episode of The Outspoken Podcast, host Shana Cosgrove talks to Julie Lenzer, Chief Innovation Officer at the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI). Julie talks about her early start in computer science and manufacturing and why she recently completed a master's degree in machine learning alongside working a fulltime job. She discusses her work in the biotech sector at ARMI, where she has joined innovator Dean Kamen to support and scale new processes for tissue regeneration. Julie shares the story of starting and growing her own tech business—while parenting young children—and her commitment to women's empowerment, including via a longtime leadership role with the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. Together Shana and Julie celebrate summer camp as a special chance for girls to be in nature and build confidence, and Julie tells us about mostly saying yes to opportunity (including a chance to represent the U.S. on the G20 Innovation Task Force) and occasionally saying no (turning down a post-college invite to try out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders). QUOTES“Technology for itself? It is what it is. But if you look at its ability to change things and change the world? That's what kept me going.” – Julie Lenzer [07:02]“I had read articles about the bias inherent—and bias, not algorithmic bias, but bias as in data bias—in machine learning and I wanted to understand what that meant. I wanted to understand how to avoid it [. . . ] How do we make sure that we're not just supercharging our biases and our bad behavior into making faster bad decisions?” – Julie Lenzer [10:09] “Building a business isn't rocket science, but a rocket scientist doesn't know how to do it. I'm helping these brilliant scientists figure out how to raise capital, figure out how to attract a CEO [. . .] helping them figure out what's their next milestone and how to get there.” – Julie Lenzer [17:29]TIMESTAMPS[00:04] Intro[01:31] Meet Julie Lenzer[04:50] Computer Science and Being the Only Woman in the Room[09:57] Mastering Machine Learning and Managing Bias in AI [14:54] When Biofabrication Is Your Day Job[18:12] Choosing a Mission When You Can Do Anything You Want[19:55] Starting Your Own Company Before Age 30[24:38] Building Something Bigger Than Yourself [28:13] Knowing When to Walk Away [31:12] Building Girl Leaders Through Girl Scouts [38:02] Ignoring Old Programming[43:19] Taking Pride in Letting Teams Shine[46:23] On Failing and Lessons Learned[49:03] Writing about ParentPreneurship[53:20] Saying Yes to the G20 Innovation Task Force[1:00:03] OutroRELEVANT LINKS Julie Lenzer on LinkedInNyla Technology SolutionsI'd love to hear from you -- your feedback is important to me and I read all of it. How vital do you consider training to be? How about relationship-building on the job? Join host Todd and guest Rebecca Lewis as they discuss misconceptions around “blue collar” and “white collar” jobs, the strange competition between trade schools and colleges, the best way to defend tech adoption to naysayers, and the biggest hurdles that currently face the industry. Rebecca Lewis is an Electrical Revit & CAD Design Engineer at Allison-Smith Company LLC in Atlanta, Georgia. Before I share my Todd Takes, I wanted to give a shout out to a past guest Walker Lockard of DADO for setting up the introduction with Rebecca. I hope you enjoyed hearing her perspective as much as I did. Personally, I walked away with so many points to think about it was difficult to narrow it down to just 3 takes. TODD-TAKES To Rebecca's point on taking pride in your work, we as tech providers need to communicate better how technology actually enables field workers to regain pride in their work they feel may be threatened. It starts by taking the time to listen, engage and truly empathize. Then take the needed action to meet them where they are and make it easy to use. Training that resonates is a critical component as well. By making it more of a hands-on job simulation you increase the likelihood of retention. Take time to explain the why behind the what you are doing. Intentionality will always rule the day with everything from a new tool to leveraging BIM. Get everyone on the same page from the start. Construction is a relationship business. Do not discount any relationship along your path. The simple fact is that you have to get along with people in order to get any results.
