On a cold February afternoon, Heidi Langenfeld walks through downtown Hastings. The 84-year-old, a self-proclaimed city historian, spent years uncovering stories of the first Black families who lived and worked in Hastings. “Andrew Jackson Overall and his family lived in a home right on this block. And his barber shop, he had a number of locations around town,” Langenfeld recalls. Langenfeld, who is white and was born in Hastings, says some of the buildings that stand here today were once operated by the first Black entrepreneurs, like Andrew Jackson Overall — who settled in the city in the 1800s. Many were barbers, farmers and mill workers.‘That's where we started our life'This part of history — the one that highlights triumph, not trauma — is why Greg McMoore feels it's necessary to share the story of his own family's journey to Hastings. He's a descendant of the Wallace family, who are now the McMoores. “My second-generation grandfather escaped slavery from Virginia and came to Hastings, Minn. And that's where we started our life. And certainly it's a story about his escape and what took place then,” McMoore said. A lifelong resident of Minneapolis, McMoore recently completed a fellowship that enabled him to research his family history. He says his ancestors, John and Nancy Wallace, came to Hastings between 1865 and 1870.“This is where my grandmother, Rebecca Elsie Moore, was born and graduated from high school here at Hastings High School. And then grandma made her way to south Minneapolis. And that's where the family is right now,” McMoore said.Composer and Hamline professor Davu Underwood Seru is also a descendant of the Wallace family. He and Greg McMoore are cousins and began working together recently to piece together parts of their collective history. Seru says the names of his great-great grandparents' Clarence and Julia Underwood are written in the McMoore family Bible.“That's where we started to make the link,” Seru said. “So between the Underwoods who are, you know, my family are situated historically in north Minneapolis, and the Wallaces who again came to Hastings at around the time that the U.S. waged war against the Dakota people down here, 1862.” ‘They were a presence'These stories tell just one part of the rich Black history of Hastings — where only about 40 African Americans lived in 1870. By 1875, a civil rights law passed allowing Black people to serve on juries and share transportation, among other things. At the time, there was no legal segregation, Black families were able to settle where they wanted and even buy houses. Schools were integrated. But Langenfeld says the tone started to change and soon civil rights laws allowing Black people basic rights, were repealed in 1883. Black people couldn't ride in the same railroad cars anymore, many had to wait for trains and would often miss going to work.Langenfeld says it's not clear what led to the burning of the Brown's Chapel AME Church in the 1900s, but Jim Crow-like laws came into effect; cross burnings started taking place and the Ku Klux Klan was loud and active. A century after a Black church burned A call to acknowledge history However, Hastings was also a place where Black residents were able to open their own businesses. Langenfeld says a territorial census conducted in 1857 found four Black men living in Hastings. Three of those men were barbers. On Hastings' Main Street, Langenfeld recalls where these barbers did business. "So between 1857 and 1880, they were a presence on Second Street," she said. In fact from the 1850s until the early 1900s, Black men owned and operated nearly all of the barbershops in the Twin Cities and nearby communities. History and defiance; resilience and hopeToday, Hastings' Black population sits at just 1.2 percent. But the history of Black entrepreneurship lives on with some of its current residents. Tyler Gibson, who's Black, owns Holtyme in Hastings — a screen printing and embroidery shop. The 33-year-old has lived in Hastings for six years and owned his shop in the city for three. He does everything from apparel printing to commercial printing and graphic designing. Gibson credits 80 percent of the reason why he decided to open up his shop in Hastings, to Langenfeld and her mission to make Hastings a place where Black families could prosper again. The other 20 percent, he says, is an act of defiance.Gibson says his ancestors fought and died so that he could feel welcome anywhere and have ownership of any place."They kind of paid a price so that I can walk anywhere in this country and not have to feel welcome but know that I have the right to be there,” Gibson said. Other descendants of Hastings' early Black community say they feel a deep connection to their roots. Seru says finding out his family's history dates back to the 19th century, has been affirming in a way he couldn't have prepared for. He says his family's history is part of an enduring legacy."It's also a story that's wrapped up in tragedy and black people's effort to do better than tragedy,” he said. “And to, to be Minnesotans, to own this place, to feel worthy, to feel ownership, again, ownership over their face as Minnesotans and I'm proud again, have taken up that torch."Seru also says making this connection to Hastings in the 1860s was powerful because of the way that it coincides with typical narratives about Black migrations from the south, and also because it happened earlier than the great migration that started around World War I. McMoore says history is intentional — and though painful at times, revisiting parts of history helps him understand where he came from, how different his life is from his ancestors, and the change still needed today."Just the fact that we've been able to research and understand that our ancestors escaped slavery. What that journey was, like, where we are now has had an awful lot to do with who we are as a people, and where we're going to go,” McMoore said. The history of Hastings' Black community is more than the suffering families often endured. It's also an acknowledgment of the community's resilience under adversity, its commitment to being hopeful and its resolve to start lives in other cities, despite the systemic racism that attempted to stop them time and time again.

To eat or not to eat? Is it safe to eat Faerie Food? The answer is perfectly complicated: yes, and no. That is to say, it depends. There is a long-held belief that if you consume food or drink offered by Faerie, you will be bound to their realm for all times, never to return to your family and friends. How do we know this? Because those who have accepted Faerie hospitality and never returned have warned us! To add to the confusion… we discover that declining food or drink from the Good People can be as dangerous as accepting it and ponder what it is about Faerie food and drink which affects us so. * Fancy buying me a coffee? Matt loves old typewriters and hopes to one day, pending Hanks' interest, host a podcast about them. Bill prefers the company of older folks when ringing in the new year. Matt shouts out the Buck-ster this week. Bill will happily go all-Duckworth on you without missing a beat. Baylen smiles like he wants to take Ricky out back for some some real Bond-esque, testy torture. Bill gets all “theater professor” on us for a spell. George looks to seek comfort in the loving reassurance of Richard Roma. George's studio apartment is all of our studio apartments. The fellas look a bit forward to the upcoming minutes and the excitement mounts. Bill confirms Roma's hair is still in flippity mode. The fellas bemoan how revealing movie trailers have become. Matt loves Bill's rock and roll voice in the new “who would they play” jingle. The boys cast Brad Pitt this week. A Happy New Year and hearty “thank you” to all who listened this year.
In this episode, we go through Jay Z's 4:44 and all of the topics surrounding it. There's a funny dichotomy that happens with Cedric's cynical view and Tressie's optimistic/human view of the album. First-time guest Roger Cormier joins the panel to talk about House Of Cards's fifth season, and whether real-life crazer news cycles have made the Underwoods' nutty machinations suffer by comparison. We discussed whether Dave will hate History's upcoming UFO drama Blue Book, then went around the dial with Drag Race, The Americans, Animal Kingdom, and American Gods, and considered The X-Files's "The Field Where I Died" (...of boredom) for The Nonac. The Big Bang Theory won, a very big human lost, and we put on our best announcer voices to pair off presenters in this week's Game Time. Filibuster your commute with an all-new Extra Hot Great! House of Cards Walking Tour of DC, Interview with Kathleen Bashian Frank Underwood's Washington... As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living series, our guest today on The Not Old Better Show is House of Cards Walking Tour expert, guide, and professor, Dr Kathleen Bashian. You've seen that flashing opening sequence of House of Cards season after season, and we all know that theme music (here, generously supplied by musician Jesse Ahmann, an excellent cellist, and online at jesseahmann.net). But, for those of us who binge on the Netflix program, and obsess over each episode and detail, we can walk the House of Cards Washington locations, on an excellent walking tour, lead by DC based guide, and House of Cards expert, Kathleen Bashian. I had the pleasure of joining local historian Dr. Kathleen Bashian (web site HERE) for a 2 mile walking tour that covers a wide variety of Washington locations against which the Underwoods' scheming, affairs of state, and affairs of a different kind play out. Along the way, she offers insights into the history and background of the locations in House of Cards to better appreciate some of the show's memorable moments, and how their astute selection enhances the impact of its storylines and characters. Next tour is Nov 5. Meet at the fountain on the West Front of Capitol (the location where presidential inaugurations take place); the tour concludes at Hill Country Barbeque Market. The tour includes lunch. Enjoy!

G' day from Uluru. Bit late on parade this week as our perambulations continue. Aunty Jean wants your spit for good reason and Roifield says a bong never hurt anyone. Lucy makes an Easter prediction which I doubt will happen as I do not think Helen can do anything without Henry - she could not leave her son with Rob. Listen to the podcast to find out what happens, according to Lucy, whilst the village hall opening is in progress (not Lower Loxley). Glyn Fullelove started talking about belly buttons for some reason - my hearing was distorted by plane noises - but he was going on about inners & outers! Roifield & Lucy disagree over the women in The Archers. I have to side with Roifield as it is the men who are poorly written. I bet Lucy would like to spend time in the lingerie dept at Underwoods - simple jealousy. The missing village shop gossip was also identified - the failing of this Editor has been laid bare for all to see. Bring back the Real Ambridge. Millie Belle provides her usual wonderful... It’s all out political war as Frank and Claire fight on all fronts, Islamic terror organizations, search engine snooping, the vice presidential nomination, Republican opposition, gun control, Supreme Court nominations, domestic surveillance… it’s like the Underwoods want to touch every third rail in politics simultaneously. What’s next, taking on Social Security? Are they insane? We’ll check back in with you next week on Tuesday to see how they manage to escape from the various predicaments they find themselves, then we’ll wrap things up with the finale and wrap up podcast Friday! Jim and A.Ron are impressed with the strongest stretch of House of Cards in any a season. With events both shocking and eminently watchable, we praise the opportunism of Claire as she waylays the entire government apparatus as a sort of audition for her role in higher power. Will her daring gambit pay off, or will the Underwoods, and the United States of America, pay too high a price? Thanks for your patience, friends! We're back, and we're joined by our esteemed colleague Alex Zeidel for a discussion of House Of Cards's third season. Sarah's not a crackpot for thinking TV kids need to have a seat at the dinner table, Liv's talking scary makeup with Dave, and we're circling the dial with Togetherness, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, obscure Nimoy, and CSI: Dawson. After considering whether Alex's RuPaul's Drag Race Canon submission was sickening in the right ways, we crowned a winner and a loser, and Game Time really stretched the term "working title." Over the Underwoods? Either way, there's something fishy about this week's episode of Extra Hot Great. GUESTS

February has been a brutal month for most of us – snow and cold and ice and kids home from school and trips cancelled. Perhaps the only thing that redeems this month is the release of season three of “House of Cards” on Feb. 27. Perhaps it is our fascination with the dysfunction of Washington that makes the Netflix drama so irresistible. Perhaps it’s the fact that the series takes you where no journalist is allowed to go - into the fantastical and not so fantastical political wheeling and dealing going on all around us – with a large dose of dramatic license. Where exactly is that line between truth, fiction and Washington politics? That’s the question we try to answer with a special series of podcasts – that’s right, it is “House of Cards” week on DecodeDC. Whether you are a series fan or just want to get the inside scoop on the dirtiest deeds of politicians, journalists and the political operatives that occupy Washington, you will definitely want to listen. **Spoiler alert – we’re going to talk about things that happened in seasons one and two.** In case you missed the first two seasons – here are the essentials. Francis Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, has wheedled and schemed his way from Congress to the vice presidency to the Oval Office. Together with his equally conniving wife, Claire, played by Robin Wright, they knock down every conceivable barrier, using any means necessary, in their quest for power. Along the way there’s murder, blackmail, a risque assortment of sexual forays, a crazy trade deal with China, a lot of seduction and deception. Those on the Underwoods’ side are rewarded, those obstructing their path are mowed down. Where do these people come up with these plots? We go to the sources for the answer. In episode one of “Inside House of Cards,” we take you into the writers room. Staff writer Bill Kennedy explains the narrative and the relationships and the key scenes that define seasons one and two. Journalism takes a shellacking in the series and in our second episode, we speak with Matt Bai, formally a political reporter at The New York Times Magazine. Bai plays a political reporter for The New York Times in season two and says the series gets at some essential truths about Washington and journalism. In episode three, we enter the world of Capitol-Hill-staffer-turned-lobbyist. Jimmy Williams has led the real life of one of the fictional characters in the series, Remy Danton. Williams says the life of a lobbyist is about one thing, raising money for members of Congress. House of Cards has a lot of nasty people, but some of the nastiest are female reporters. In episode four, we talk to two real-life women journalists who cover Washington -- Pam Kirkland of the Washington Post, the paper fictionalized in "House of Cards", and Carrie Wells of the Baltimore Sun, stand-in and real life set for the imagined "Washington Herald." In our fifth and final episode, we speak with Beau Willimon, the man behind the series. Willimon adapted the British version of “House of Cards” for the American audience and runs the show. A former campaign staffer, Willimon knows how the system works from the inside out, and as playwright he knows how to do drama. Download the DecodeDC's "Inside House of Cards" special series starting today and all next week – or, you can just binge listen to them all before the 27th!
