Tim brings his unique background in computer engineering and cognitive science to the discussion, shedding light on the evolution of the brain and its impact on human behavior. He explains how our brains developed as a response to fast changes in the environment caused by movement, highlighting the importance of social dynamics over logical reasoning. Tim also delves into the concept of culture spread and how humans made an evolutionary bet on it, setting us apart from animals. This conversation is essential for business leaders and marketers who want to better understand human behavior and predict consumer choices. By recognizing the underlying evolutionary basis of our brains, they can design experiences that align with human nature, effectively connecting with their target audience. Tim's expertise in neural networks and neuromarketing provides a unique perspective on leveraging the primal brain for ethical reasons and leveling the playing field in marketing. Don't miss this opportunity to gain insights that will enhance your business strategies and drive success. In this episode: Discover the evolutionary basis of the brain, unveiling insights into the origin of human behavior. Unravel the secrets behind mirror neurons and understand their importance in human learning processes and empathy. Understand the ways in which cultural spread influences our adaptability and drives behavioral changes. Delve into how social media can be exploited to leverage our instinct for cultural spread. Gain insights into how to design business experiences that are harmonized with the innate nature of humans. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina Palmer introduces Tim Ash and discusses the importance of understanding the primal brain in behavioral economics and business. 00:01:44 - Evolution of the Brain, Tim explains how the brain evolved to respond to fast changes in the environment caused by movement. He highlights the energy-intensive nature of the brain and its focus on modeling complex social relationships. 00:07:11 - Heuristics and Biases, Tim explores how the brain uses heuristics and biases to navigate the world, balancing the need for energy consumption and survival. He emphasizes the brain's primary function of modeling social dynamics rather than logical reasoning. 00:09:50 - Culture Spread, Tim discusses how humans evolved to rely on culture spread as an evolutionary advantage. He explains the role of mirror neurons and the physical adaptations in humans to facilitate cultural learning. 00:13:36 - Unique Aspects of Human Brain Development, Tim highlights the unique aspects of human brain development, such as prolonged adolescence. He discusses how these adaptations contribute to the spread of culture and the importance of learning from others. 00:15:50 - Evolutionary Reasons for Modeling and Survival Goals, Tim explains that there are evolutionary reasons for modeling and mirror neurons. Modeling helps us imagine what someone is doing when they are out of sight, while survival goals like feeding and interpreting gestures are important for our physical skill rehearsal. Mirror neurons play a role in all of these processes and contribute to our survival. 00:17:14 - Learning from Successful Examples and Tribal Cohesion, Tim discusses the importance of learning from successful examples and the role of tribal cohesion in our learning process. We tend to learn from older people who have survived and people who are similar to us in terms of ethnicity, gender, and language. This preference for learning from similar individuals reinforces tribalism and group cohesion. 00:18:56 - Overcoming Biases and Expanding Circles of Empathy, Tim expresses a lack of hope in overcoming biases and expanding circles of empathy, especially in society and politics. He highlights our biological predisposition to form tribes and the difficulty of accepting other views once we are part of a tribe. However, he suggests that meeting and talking to people who are different from us can help in creating a larger circle of empathy. 00:21:32 - Conservative and Progressive Spheres of Concern, Tim shares an interesting finding from sociological research that conservative and progressive individuals tend to have different spheres of concern. He uses perceptions of immigration as an example of these differences. 00:30:24 - Girls' School Performance and Self Esteem Decline, Girls tend to outperform boys academically, especially in the early years. However, when they hit puberty, their self-esteem declines, and they start caring more about what their friends think of them. This often leads to a decline in academic performance. 00:31:27 - The Importance of the First Five Years, The first five years of a child's life are critical for their development. During this time, they need to feel loved, safe, and have proper nutrition and sleep. These experiences become hardwired into their biology and can influence their social attitudes and behaviors later in life. 00:33:22 - The Power of Empathy, Developing empathy is crucial for raising good humans. One way to cultivate empathy is through direct experiences with people from different backgrounds and cultures. By understanding and modeling the behaviors and experiences of others, we can foster empathy and understanding. 00:34:48 - The Role of Storytelling, Storytelling serves multiple evolutionary purposes. It allows us to simulate experiences we can't directly have, like living out a nightmare scenario without the real-life consequences. It also helps maintain cultural cohesion by spreading knowledge and values within a tribe. However, the cultural package we bring to a story can influence how we interpret and experience it. 00:36:56 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. Are you curious about human behavior and what really drives our decisions? In this episode, Adam Hill interviews bestselling author and expert on marketing and evolutionary psychology Tim Ash, who discusses key concepts from his book "Unleash Your Primal Brain." Tim explains how irrational we truly are as human beings and how our emotions, not rational thought, drive most of our decisions. He delves into topics like sleep, decision-making, negativity bias, and tribal psychology. They discuss Ash's background growing up in the Soviet Union and immigrating to the United States, as well as his career path from digital marketing to studying human behavior through an evolutionary lens. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Tim's career background Curiosity as an antidote to fear About “Unleash Your Primal Brain” Using evolutionary psychology to build positive tribes The role of emotions in decision-making The psychology of negative thinking and its impact on decision-making Evolutionary psychology and its applications in marketing and personal growth Episode Highlights: [14:11] Curiosity as an Antidote to Fear Tim recently had the pleasure of being a guest on Dov Baron's podcast, "Curiosity Bites." Dov shared his insight that curiosity serves as the foundation for all other values. Without it, one's life can become stagnant and devoid of purpose. Curiosity propels us to actively seek growth, learning, and personal development, encouraging us to push past our fears and limitations to expand the boundaries of what we once believed possible. In fact, curiosity serves as an antidote for fear, presenting an alternative approach to dealing with it. Rather than simply pushing through or denying our fear, embracing curiosity allows us to focus on something that outweighs our fear, providing us with a powerful tool to navigate challenging situations. [17:48] Unleashing Your Primal Brain: A Fun and Readable Journey into Evolutionary Psychology In his book "Unleash Your Primal Brain," Tim Ash skillfully delves into evolutionary psychology, presenting it in a captivating and concise manner. By condensing the essence of 30 books into one remarkable work, Ash explores the idea that all humans share a common operating system, tracing our thoughts and actions back to the entire arc of evolution. From primitive life forms to complex human traits like social nature and tribalism, the book covers a wide range of topics. Readers embark on a captivating journey exploring memory, learning, sleep, language, gender differences, and more, gaining insights into the deepest roots of our existence and the fascinating intricacies of what drives us. [25:07] The Evolution of Human Tribal Bonds and the Primal Polarization Toolkit Tim explains that as social beings, humans evolved to be strongly bonded to their tribes for survival. However, in modern society we belong to overlapping tribes. Ash shares the "primal polarization toolkit,” containing strategies like creating uncertainty, peer pressure, unanimity, and synchronized group activities that can be intentionally used to polarize groups, for better or worse. However, with awareness of these mechanisms, we can leverage them to foster bonding and cooperation. By recognizing how our brains evolved for tribalism, we can establish a sense of shared purpose, values and identity within workplaces, organizations, friend groups and beyond. This has implications for building loyalty, morale and productivity when applied ethically and for the benefit of all members. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Memory is a funny thing. We like to think we have these perfect pictures of what really happened in our minds waiting to be retrieved in pristine condition, but that's not at all how it works. It turns out we have all sorts of biases that, well, bias our memories. And that is important to know in our interactions with other people in life and business. The truth is: you can remember something completely different from someone else, and neither of you has to be wrong. Let me say that again, even if you remember something that is completely different than someone else, it doesn't mean that either of you is wrong. Our brains screen for different information than what someone else might be screening for (focusing illusion and confirmation bias). That subconscious filter is sifting through a lot of stuff, and what mattered to you and what you remember is never the full picture. This episode, which originally came out in early 2019, is a quick run through of a bunch of memory biases (part of the 8-part “All the Biases” series). So, why was memory important to refresh today? It is because of the guest I am delighted to introduce you to this coming Friday, Dan Willingham, a memory expert whose book Outsmart Your Brain will change your life (and that of every learner you know). Outsmart Your Brain has chapters on “how to take notes,” “how to listen to a lecture,” “how to read hard books,” “how to take tests,” and more. It is fascinating and will help you with any presentation you may give or meeting you will be in moving forward. Trust me, you're gonna love that conversation and Dan's book, so be sure to subscribe to The Brainy Business podcast now (before you forget). (Haha, memory joke!) Show Notes: [00:39] Today's episode is all about memory biases. Memory is a funny thing. [01:16] You can remember something completely different from someone else, and neither of you has to be wrong. [03:41] Today's episode is going to be divided into three sections: general memory stuff, false memories, and tips on how you can use these biases to help you remember things better. [04:45] Our memories are basically inaccurate renditions our brains tell us and every time we access them we change them a little. So the more you think about something the less and less it is like the original version. (Frustrating, but true.) [06:26] Your customers, coworkers, friends, and family all have these same biases, so hopefully learning more about all your brains will help in all sorts of interactions in the future. [07:20] You are the hero of your own story and no one will remember your story as well as you do (but of course even you don't remember your story correctly). The emotions tied to bad memories will fade quicker than the emotions tied to positive events. [10:08] A few well planned surprise and delight moments throughout a relationship can create good peaks (and remember the most recent end holds the most weight). [12:38] A false memory is when we accidentally think something we imagined really happened and misattribute it as a memory. [14:15] Our brains are powerful, but they are easily manipulated too. [15:39] The opposite of a false memory is called cryptomnesia when a real memory is mistaken as imagination because there is not a proper experience of it being a memory. [17:21] We do tend to remember the efforts we had to put in as much higher than they were and toils more difficult as they were in reality. [19:12] Don't feel like you need to remember everything about everything. Instead, remember important things that can't be easily looked up, and don't gunk up your brain with all the trivial information. [20:45] If you want to be able to remember things better and with easier recall, it is best to have repeated exposure over a long span of time instead of trying to cram it all in at the last minute. [22:14] Try to commit things to memory in the context they belong to or multiple contexts so they are less isolated. The mood we are in is also tied to the context. [24:13] If you want to remember things, write them down. [25:51] Visual images are often recalled by our visual subconscious faster and easier than words because of the picture superiority effect. [27:38] We all put so much effort into making things as easy as possible to read and process but in reality due to processing difficulty, stuff that takes longer to read and process is easier to remember. [28:43] We are provided with lists of things all the time and the way those things are presented absolutely impacts memory. [30:15] Due to the next in line effect you are less likely to remember the words people spoke just before you because you were distracted with what you wanted to say. Being a good listener is key to building relationships in life and business. [31:40] Melina's closing thoughts Thanks for listening. Don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. Meet TimTim Ash is an acknowledged authority on evolutionary psychology and digital marketing. He is a sought-after international keynote speaker, and the bestselling author of Unleash Your Primal Brain and Landing Page Optimization. Tim has been mentioned by Forbes as a Top-10 Online Marketing Expert, and by Entrepreneur Magazine as an Online Marketing Influencer To Watch. He is a former digital agency head, international keynote speaker, and marketing consultant to top companies. How does evolutionary psychology help us to understand our social natures?Well, our brains evolved for a reason. And we share things with the earliest forms of life on Earth, like insects and more primitive or let's say, more ancient forms of life. And then, as we evolved, we layered on different things so that at the very end of our evolution, we gotten some really, really bizarre to species level stuff that makes us unique. In fact, I'd say that's why we took over the whole planet. And so understanding that evolutionary path, and some of the things that we inherited along the way, helps us to understand how to be in relationships with each other, whether that's in business, or in personal relationships. Why is storytelling important? And, more importantly, how does it work?I like to go back to first principles and evolution to define all this stuff. And so I like to ask the question, why is storytelling even something we do? Why do we have language? Why do we tell stories? And we're highly cultural creatures, we'll probably talk about that in more depth as well. But one of the things that we can do is learn from each other. So you know that you can learn from your own mistakes or other people's mistakes. And by being able to learn from other people's mistakes, we avoid danger, we increase our chances of survival. So if I said, hey, Lori, if you keep going down that forest path, and around the bend, you're gonna run into a really angry mama bear and it's gonna tear you to shreds. I got the scars to prove it right here. I'm still bleeding from the encounter with the bear. Right? That's probably useful information to you. Can we agree on that? Absolutely. So basically, what I did just saved us the danger, or the time investment, and the uncertainty of dealing with that situation by telling you about it. So what I did is I kind of transferred my experiences into your head. I don't know if you've ever watched the old Star Trek show. They had Mr. Spock, he was a very logical Vulcan and he could do this Vulcan mind meld where he'd put his hands on your skull and transfer his experiences directly into your head. And it seems so far-fetched, but that's essentially what stories do. They've shown on brain scans that if a teller is telling a story with a very slight delay, the recipient on the other end is activating the same parts of the brain. So you're really doing a kind of a mind meld and transferring your experiences into someone else by telling a story, a very powerful way to help you survive. Lori: I love that. Your focus sounded like it was heavy on the education side of things, but also storytelling, from my perspective. And just the way that people connect is and want to be part of a conversation or pull more information is not only education, but also entertainment. I think it's a combination of the two. Well, again, from an evolutionary standpoint, I don't think entertainment is a goal. But I'd say that entertainment helps the medicine go down. So if I'm telling you an experience, I might choose to be funny about it and then that makes you more engaged with it, which forms a stronger memory of my story. So absolutely, that's important. One other thing too, that's super important, is knowing that the morals that people get from the same story are going to be very different based on our experiences and our cultural beliefs. That depends on which tribe we're in. So the same objective reality will land very differently when I tell that story...

Unleash Your Primal Brain: Demystifying How We Think and Why We Act by Tim Ash Timash.com Understand what makes us human! Unleash Your Primal Brain is about the commonalities all 8,000,000,000 people on earth share. Our ancestors were molded by ruthless survival pressures from the earliest days of life on the planet. Adaptations which worked long ago are still inside of us – also shared with insects and reptiles. Later additions are common to all mammals from the tiniest shrews to the most massive whales. Some capabilities were bolted on relatively recently and are only shared with our primate cousins. And the runaway explosion of humans on the planet can only be explained by our own bizarre species-level evolution. The only way to understand how our brains work is to examine the complete evolutionary arc. "It's not about technology, but all about evolutionary psychology!" is one of the many quotes by Tim Ash in this podcast. Tim is a keynote speaker, advisor, and author of the book 'Unleash your Primal Brain' which is the only book on evolutionary psychology that actually reads like a novel. People are not a rational as many marketers think they are or want them to be. Knowing that, means that as a marketer it's essential to have knowledge on how the primal brain actually works in order to succeed. The book and this podcast will give you great guidance on this. Welcome back to another episode of Monetization Nation with Tim Ash. In the last episode, we discussed how to create a successful landing page. In today's episode, Tim explains his entrepreneurial journey and the lessons he learned along the way. Tim's Entrepreneurial Journey Tim was born in the former Soviet Union and moved to the United States when he was about 8 years old. His family ended up in California, and he eventually attended school at the University of California San Diego. He double-majored in cognitive science and computer engineering in graduate school. For seven years he worked towards a Ph.D., but eventually realized it wasn't something he wanted to pursue. After he dropped out from completing his Ph.D., he started up his own business, helping people launch new startups, serving on their boards of directors, and raising their first rounds of venture capital. He thought he could be more successful doing his own thing so he bought a desk and office space and took a leap. He was so excited. He said, “I remember . . . I called up my girlfriend and said, ‘Hey, I'm running around the office naked. You know why? Because I can; It's my frickin office.'” For the last 25 years, Tim has built his own business from scratch—a journey he has referred to as a rollercoaster. Along the way, he started an international conference series, became a published author, and started keynote speaking. “It's been a lot of what you'd call pivots or just adjustments—wrenching adjustments. The survival enzyme has been running professional services firms for a long, long time,” he said. In his journey, he has learned three key principles every startup entrepreneur should know and apply. 1. Know When to Accept Criticism Over the past years, Tim has learned how to balance criticism and suggestions from his peers. It is a tension he has had to navigate many times. There are always critics. People can think of a million reasons why our idea isn't going to work, and sometimes, we just have to push through it. “I guess the one thing that stands out for what to do, all of that from an entrepreneurial standpoint, is this balance between saying, ‘Screw you, I'm going to do it anyway,' which every entrepreneur needs, and throwing good money after bad saying, ‘You know, maybe it's time to go do something else.' That's always the tension . . . People call with a thousand reasons why your ideas are not gonna work. And at some level, you have to plow on in spite,” he explained. So where's that fine line? How do we know when to listen to people when they say our ideas are dumb, and how do we know when to ignore them and just keep moving forward? A meme that has stood out to Tim is, “Never take criticism from someone you wouldn't go to for advice.” - Unknown He listens to the mentors and colleagues he respects, then tries to ignore the comments of everyone else. When I started my first business, adoption.com, people told me my market was too small and my niche was too specific. They said I needed to pick a bigger market. I ignored them and went with my instincts, and we ended up being number one in our niche and category. There will always be naysayers. Part of being an entrepreneur means ignoring the doubts and trusting our gut. There's a lot of wisdom to sometimes ignoring the people that don't quite understand why we're doing what we're doing. However, there is also wisdom in accepting criticism and making changes. In fact, we should advocate for testing different ideas. Just because something isn't in our brand guidelines doesn't mean we can't test it out. The style guide or brand guide CAN be changed, and if multiple people are making the same suggestion, we shouldn't let pride get in the way of trying something new. Part of being an entrepreneur also requires us to be very clear about who we serve and what value we can offer to them. Having that laser focus allows us to cut through the clutter. If we truly understand our niche and our audience, it will be easier to ignore the doubts of the people around us. On our journey, there will be times when we want to give up. It is natural, especially when it feels like we don't have support from the people around us. Tim has had experiences just like this. “There were definitely several times when it gets harder to be an entrepreneur,” Tim said. “[But it comes with] belief in yourself that you get after being an entrepreneur for a long time.” Eventually, entrepreneurs learn to really trust themselves and their ideas. 2. Understand your “Superpower” Learning to trust ourselves and understanding our strengths is just as important as understanding who we serve. No superhero has every superpower. This same principle applies in business. Everyone has their own strengths. It is about finding our superpower and focusing on that. Nobody can be an expert in everything. As we move along on our journey, we will recognize what we are good at and eventually learn how to rely on ourselves. “You can't be an expert at everything,” Tim said. “What I'm talking about is your ability to cut through the clutter and for people to remember what you stand for.” 3. Determine and Follow Marketing Ethics Before Money is Involved Once we learn how to navigate through the critics and find our purpose, value, and strengths, we can determine what we stand for. As an entrepreneur, it is important to determine our marketing ethics right off the bat, especially before the money is involved. “I think that we really need to step back and think about ethics,” Tim said. “One of the reasons that I wrote Unleash Your Primal Brain was kind of to level the playing field for consumers and individuals. We're being manipulated by large companies, by media enterprises, and they're all trying to strip mine us for value and profit.” For example, I see a lot of people put a timer on an offer to create scarcity. They claim it is only available for a limited amount of time, but then the next day, that same offer comes up, creating artificial scarcity to manipulate people into buying. We need to question this stuff before we do it and ask ourselves if we will be okay with the results before the money even becomes a factor. Tim saw an example of this manipulation when a business hid a disclaimer about their service or product. A business he worked for put the disclaimer in the heading of the page so people wouldn't see it. The guidelines required to put the disclaimer above the CTA button, so they weren't technically breaking guidelines, but they were trying to be dishonest by hiding the truth. As we determine our values, we also need to look at our ethics. Marketing ethics ties into credibility. If credibility is the most important marketing principle happening today, is it ethical to say or do something that, when our customers discover the reality, will cause us to lose credibility? Is it ethical to give them a fake deadline? If our customers notice this, we immediately lose trust and credibility, ultimately leading to a loss in monetization as well. As starting entrepreneurs, it is essential to navigating criticism. If we can't, our ideas won't make it very far. We need to find our superpower so we can provide value to our audience. And finally, we need to determine our ethics at the very beginning to make sure we keep our credibility and do what we know is right. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Tim for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We need to be able to sort through the good and bad criticism. We should only take criticism from people we would take advice from. We need to make sure we aren't so prideful that we ignore good suggestions. We need to learn how to trust ourselves. We each have our own unique “superpower”. We need to discover what that is and learn how to use it to benefit our customers. As an entrepreneur, it is important to determine our marketing ethics right off the bat, especially before the money is involved. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pedrocaramez/message

Stories are fundamentally about the narrative of causality in the world. They are for us to get experience without going through the process. They are there to reinforce cultural beliefs and values. Acknowledge people for who they are and make them feel seen with attention and intention. Ask questions, personalize, and unlock their passions to connect on a deeper level. Conversation with Tim Ash, an acknowledged authority on evolutionary psychology and digital marketing, an international keynote speaker, a bestselling author of “Landing Page Optimization” and his newest book, “Unleash Your Primal Brain.”
Tim Ash was the co-founder and CEO of SiteTuners for 19 years, and he helped to create over $1.2 billion in value for companies like Google, Expedia, and Nestle. Now a globally acknowledged authority on evolutionary psychology and digital marketing, Tim joins the show today to share insights from his new book, Unleash Your Primal Brain: Demystifying how we think and why we act.
Tim Ash is an international keynote speaker and the author of Unleash Your Primal Brain. The Marketing Mind with John Ellis meets top marketers, discussing where they came from and what they've learned along the way.
Tim Ash ran the strategic Conversion Rate Optimization agency, SiteTuners for over 20 years, a business that has generated over $1.2 billion in value for its clients. At the core of that success was a deep understanding of neurobiology, which Tim explores in detail in his new book ‘Unleash Your Primal Brain’. In this episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast, Sean Ellis interviews Tim to better understand how “what makes us bizarrely and uniquely human” can be used to help us drive growth. The conversation is spirited as Tim holds some contrarian views to Sean when it comes to driving growth through high-velocity testing and optimization practices. However, there is also plenty of common ground as they discuss how the biology of the brain impacts everything from interpersonal relationships to politics, and how an understanding of these ideas can be applied to accelerate growth for businesses. Both Sean and Tim are passionate about the importance of driving value for end-users as the foundation for unlocking growth, and there are exciting learnings as Tim explains how “relentless dissatisfaction” can help companies find opportunities to drive significant improvements. According to Tim, “‘Unleash Your Primal Brain’ may help you make a billion dollars or even become the next Dalai Lama, but at the very least this interview will help you understand how a deeper look into your own brain can help you understand and influence others. We discussed: How neuro-marketing and principles from ‘Influence’ by Robert Cialdini’s helped shape Tim’s thinking and his book How the biology of the brain and cultural and genetic co-evolution impact our lives as humans The do-nothing status quo and why companies fail when they try to be nice instead of appealing to our survival instincts to avoid pain Why companies need to focus on value over product and put the emphasis on learning from customers How neurobiology and science fit into the test/learn approach to growth How motivation, ability and triggers work together to drive action
