Well, the voters have spoken, and despite all of our recommendations to the contrary, they seem to have voted for Trump. Yeah, we're pretty sad/scared/pissed off/trying to cope by dissociating and stress eating as well. Regardless, once again, it's Trump's America and we're just living (or dying) in it. We know from experience that a Trump presidency is bad for our health, but now he has a surprising new ally in making our lives shorter and more dangerous: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhwR1W_x-TA Show Notes RFK is a former presidential candidate and critic of Trump, an expert falconer, an eater of roadkill, a source of shame for the entire Kennedy family, and a “superspreader” of false information about vaccines. And now he's about to bring his mission to Make America Healthy Again to the masses as the Secretary of Health and Human Services for the entire USA. In this episode, we're going to try to figure out what the hell that means. RFK Jr has some wild ideas about medicine and public health, making some strange connections between cause and effect in our health. Let's play a game! We'll give you some health outcomes, and you guess what RFK has said is the cause of the problem (or “problem” in several cases). (Sources: BBC, HuffPo, Daily Beast) Problem: Autism, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and ADHDCause: Vaccines! This assertion is primarily based on the fact that SOME earlier vaccines included a preservative thimerosal, a compound that contains mercury, even though it's been debunked AND hasn't been included in children's vaccines since 2001. Problem: Arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid diseaseCause: Fluoride in drinking water! Problem: Fatness, depression, and cancerCause: Ultra Processed Foods Solution: Raw milk! Problem: AIDSCause: Not HIV! (See his book about Anthony Faucci) Problem: Increasing concentrations of bioavailable aluminum in the environmentCause: Chemtrails This one's a trick question because in a 2016, a survey of scientists showed that most of them didn't even believe that aluminum levels were increasing, let alone that chemtrails exist. Problem: Gay and Trans KidsCause: Pesticides (atrazine) in tap water. Amazing logic here: “[atrazine can] chemically castrate and forcibly feminize [frogs]... If it's doing that to frogs, there's a lot of other evidence that it's doing it to human beings as well.” Problem: COVID 19Cause: Chinese bioweapon. His logic (from a campaign video leaked to the NY Post): “COVID-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese. We don't know if it was deliberately targeted or not, but there are papers out there that show the racial and ethnic differential and the impact of that. We do know that the Chinese are spending hundreds of millions of dollars developing ethnic bioweapons and we are developing ethnic bioweapons.” A heaping helping of anti-Asian racism with a side of antisemitism! Problem: RFK Jr's own problems with memory loss and cognitionCause: He said in a 2012 divorce deposition, “a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died.” Also, tuna fish. He hasn't ever provided medical records to document this, but doctors say it might have happened? Despite the fact that he's about to be nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, RFK Jr. isn't a doctor or a medical researcher. The brain worm explains a lot about RFK Jr's thinking, but neural parasites aside, how did this guy get to be a “public health expert” to begin with? He started as a well-respected environmental lawyer. In 1984, he began volunteering with The Hudson River Fisherman's Association, later renamed “Riverkeeper,” which inspired the global “Waterkeeper” movement. He sued big polluters, helped formulate a model for sustainable development,

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. discuss the development of Donald Trump's political team, how the team plans to tackle foreign affairs and the ongoing health crisis, Kamala Harris' inability to unify the country (let alone police the broader world), and the detrimental metamorphosis of the Democratic Party which has left it scrambling and scheming for a shot at the presidency, despite the clear will of the people. This episode was filmed on September 18th, 2024 Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a writer, attorney, activist, and politician who has had a career-spanning focus on clean water, environmental, and public health issues. RFK Jr. is the founder of the WaterKeeper Alliance — the world's largest clean water advocacy group — and has served as its longtime chairman and attorney. In this role, he spearheaded the New York City Watershed Agreement, which has come to be considered an international model for sustainable development and stakeholder consensus negotiation. RFK Jr. was named Time Magazine's “Hero for the Planet” for his efforts to restore the Hudson River, which along with other achievements has led to more than 300 WaterKeeper organizations taking root across the globe. Water is essential to life, yet factory animal farms have polluted freshwater and river and wetland ecosystems and rural neighborhoods for decades. But we can work to protect water, wildlife, animals, and community health. To tell us how, is our guest Larry Baldwin. He's with the nonprofit group Waterkeeper Alliance https://waterkeeper.org/ and serves as their Campaign Coordinator for the “Pure Farms, Pure Waters” program in North Carolina. He works with the 15 licensed Waterkeeper Alliance groups in North Carolina in their efforts to reform the current polluting practices of the industrial meat producing facilities, known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, or CAFOs. In this 36-minute interview, "In Tune to Nature" radio host Carrie Freeman asks Larry Baldwin about what these mass hog facilities and mass chicken warehouses look and smell like (horrible for the animals), how the growers/farmers are in debt while agribusiness corporate executives profit, what water and air pollution these animal factories produce, like the open manure pits surrounding pig factory farms -- feces that puts bacteria and sewage into creeks and also gets sprayed into the air, creating environmental injustices in the largely Black rural communities where these factory farms are ruining quality of life. Larry was featured in a documentary on fighting this injustice, called The Smell of Money, streaming now. Larry discusses programs and policies that can protect communities and water ecosystems from CAFO pollution, and helps us know how we can help move past factory animal farming. In Tune to Nature is a weekly show airing on Wednesdays from 6:30-7pm EST on Atlanta indie station WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) 89.3FM hosted by Carrie Freeman or Melody Paris. Monterey Waterkeeper is part of a coalition of organizations seeking to reduce nitrate pollution in the region's groundwater. Nitrate contamination, the result of over-application of fertilizers, can cause the “blue baby syndrome” and various cancers in adults. The State Water Board recently issued rules that allow growers to continue over-application of nitrogen fertilizers without any deadlines for cleaning up contaminated water. In October 2023, rural Latino community and farmworker groups, environmental organizations, including Monterey Waterkeeper, and commercial and recreational fishing organizations filed suit to overturn the decision. Tune in to hear Chelsea Tu, Executive Director of Monterey Waterkeeper, talk about the problem, the situation and the solution
Justinn Overton, Executive Director Coosa WaterKeeper located in Birmingham Alabama patrols and documents the Coosa River and its tributaries from the land, water, and air, looks for pollution problems, responds to citizen complaints, researches and analyzes polluters' permits, collects pollution samples for laboratory analysis, educates the public about the beauty of the river and threats to it, advocates compliance with environmental laws, and works on finding solutions to pollution problems. In short – she speaks for the Coosa River. In this interview she discusses the river's wastewater challenges and offers some solutions.

When Autumn Peltier was eight, she learned the tap water on a neighbouring reserve wasn't safe to drink, or even to use for hand-washing. That injustice triggered her decade-long advocacy campaign for safe drinking water. She made headlines as a 12 year-old, admonishing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at an Assembly of First Nations event for the choices his government had made for her people. In this bonus episode for World Water Day 2023, Peltier and Jay discuss the way her life shifted, as she started campaigning for clean water. Peltier also shares what it was like to shoot her documentary The Water Walker, and lets us in on her plans for the future now that she's finished high school. On a day devoted to improving the way we manage, consume, and use water, the message is ‘Be The Change' – something Peltier takes to heart. Two billion people still live without clean water, and the United Nations says member countries have fallen behind on their goal to bring everyone safe water and sanitation by the year 2030. “The message is so much more powerful and so much more stronger when it's coming from a young person,” said Peltier, the chief water commissioner for the Anishinabek Nation. “That's when you know something is wrong, and something has to be done.”
If it's not stuck in glaciers or polar ice, 99 per cent of the world's freshwater is groundwater. Water underground supplies nearly half of the world's drinking water. But what happens when dangerous chemicals and waste – polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), oil, gasoline and road salts – percolate down into that supply? On this episode of What About Water? Jay sits down with the father of contaminant hydrogeology, Dr. John Cherry, to talk about the water under our feet, and how we can better monitor it. In the 1970s, Cherry wrote the foundational textbook on groundwater with his colleague, Al Freeze. And we hear how one of his students paved the path for his successful career in the field. To find out what's actually being done to stop industry polluters from dispersing PFAS chemicals into our waterways, producer Erin Stephens speaks with Marc Yaggi, CEO of the global nonprofit Waterkeeper Alliance. Yaggi shares what Waterkeeper is advocating for in Congress, brands eliminating PFAS from their production lines, and how everyone can get involved in the effort to get these “forever chemicals” out of our rivers. Check out their surface water quality survey here to learn more. Got a question for Jay? Write to us at ideas@whataboutwater.org and you may hear your question in an upcoming episode. Voice memos are also welcome!
Tom's next guest is Alice Volpitta, a water quality and monitoring scientist who has served since 2019 as Harbor Water Keeper for Blue Water Baltimore, the local not-for-profit clean water watchdog group. She has an update on the status of the State's oversight of Baltimore City's troubled wastewater treatment plants. Alice Volpitta joins us on Zoom.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

About Today's Guest: For over three decades, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has been one of the world's leading environmental advocates. He is the founder of Waterkeeper Alliance, the umbrella group for 300 local waterkeeper organizations, in 34 countries, that track down and sue polluters. Under his leadership, Waterkeeper has grown to become the world's largest clean water advocacy organization. Around 2005, parents of vaccine-injured children began encountering Mr. Kennedy's speeches and writings about the toxic mercury-based preservative thimerosal. They embraced new hope that this environmental champion would finally expose the truth about vaccine injury and win justice for injured children. He is now applying his tenacious energies and sophisticated strategies to exposing the fraud and corruption within the CDC and the pharmaceutical industry, largely through his new non-profit, the Children's Health Defense. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, Mr. Kennedy has taken his knowledge of the corrupt infrastructure of our medical system, the CDC, and the NIAID; and written an explosive new book: The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health. Meat or Plants: Which is Better for Reversing Climate Change? | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market, Athletic Greens, and Rupa HealthUsing the lens of Functional Medicine, we know we can't blame just one part of the body for disease or dysfunction. The same goes for agriculture and climate change. We can't just blame cows and call it a day. It's a complex issue that deserves a comprehensive plan of action. Regenerative agriculture recognizes the essential role of grazing animals in an ecosystem to create stronger soils, healthier crops, and produce better meat. On today's episode of The Doctor's Farmacy, I sit down with Nicolette Hahn Niman to explore where we've gone wrong when it comes to raising meat, some of the biggest areas to focus on for a positive climate impact, and so much more. As a vegetarian rancher for almost two decades who now eats meat, she offers a unique perspective on raising and eating animals. Nicolette Hahn Niman is a writer, attorney, and livestock rancher. She authored the books Defending Beef (2014, and second ed. 2021) and Righteous Porkchop (2009), as well as numerous essays for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Los Angeles Times. She has also written for The Atlantic, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Earth Island Journal, among others. Nicolette has appeared on The PBS Newshour, The Dr. Oz Show, and in numerous films and documentaries, including Eating Animals and Sustainable. Previously, she was the Senior Attorney for the environmental organization Waterkeeper, where she focused on agriculture and food production; before that, she was an environmental lawyer for National Wildlife Federation. Today, she lives in Northern California with her two sons, and her husband, Bill Niman, founder of the natural meat companies Niman Ranch and BN Ranch. In the 60s, the first Riverkeeper patrol boat was launched by military veterans and fishermen who mobilized to challenge polluters on the Hudson River. This inspired nearly 200 autonomous “Waterkeeper” organizations across the world. David Whiteside founded the Tennessee Riverkeeper in 2009 after being introduced to the Waterkeeper Alliance by his Godfather, Robert F Kennedy Jr. Their mission to protect and preserve our local water sources is something we can all support. Learn how corporations can be the solution, not the problem, and how you can make a difference in your community.
Nelson Brooke is the Black Warrior Riverkeeper, one of 350 Waterkeeper organizations that are defending local waterways world wide. RFK Jr discusses Nelson's job and battles protecting our blue planet in this special Earth Day episode. Coal pollution -- from mining, to burning, to the storage of leaky coal ash waste -- present the biggest threats to water, air, and public health in Nelson Brooke's Black Warrior River basin, which provides the drinking water for over one million Southerners. For over three decades, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has been one of the world’s leading environmental advocates. He is the Founder and President of Waterkeeper Alliance, the umbrella group to 300 local Waterkeeper organisations in 34 countries, that track down and sue polluters. Under his leadership, the Waterkeeper Alliance has grown to become the world's largest clean water advocacy organisation. Around 2005, parents with vaccine-injured children began encountering Mr. Kennedy's speeches and writings about the toxic, mercury-based preservative, Thimerosal. They embraced new hope that this environmental champion would finally expose the truth about vaccine injury and win justice for injured children.Robert is known for his fierce and relentless brand of environmental activism and his advocacy for transparent government and rigorous science. He is now applying his tenacious energy and sophisticated strategies to exposing the fraud and corruption within the CDC and the pharmaceutical industry. In this episode we discuss the safety of vaccines, why vaccines in the US can bypass safety testing, and how vaccines became a billion-dollar industry. We also talk about the future of a COVID-19 vaccine, and Robert believes that people are finally waking up to the reality that vaccines could be dangerous, but we have a long way to go. Behind closed doors and as furtively as possible, the Trump Administration is wreaking havoc on our water, air and soil. Federal lands and waterways are being subjected to lower standards far beyond the Clean Air & Water Acts and those traditionally of the EPA. Today's show is bringing to light the shadowy activity of those Administration which are harming our environment and our health. The National Envronmental Policy Act is being discarded as thoroughly as they can by this Administration. For this, Mitchell interviews Scott Edwards, director of Food & Water Justice. He came to Food & Water Watch after spending eleven years with Waterkeeper Alliance, most recently as Director of Advocacy. Scott's work at Waterkeeper involved designing and implementing strategies for a whole host of campaigns on issues such as industrial agriculture, mercury contamination, coal and military wastes. While at Waterkeeper, he was also very active in setting up programs in Asia, including China, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Prior to getting his law degree and entering the practice of environmental law, Scott taught ecology and environmental sciences to New York City high school students. All I have to say about my conversation with media and music executive, Denise Donlon, is “ I wanna be her when I grow up!” Denise struck me as someone who has managed to have an immense amount of success and has been able to remain grounded and open to sharing her experiences, candidly with an open heart. Denise and I talked in depth about the current state of the music industry and the challenges artists face in today’s current technologically driven landscape. Denise recalls when she left Much Music and became president of Sony Music Canada. That was precisely when Napster was born and the idea of pirated music became widespread and music was at everyone's music fingertips for the first time in history. This free download mentality was wreaking havoc in the music industry and is still shifting and changing to this current day. Denise notes that there was this idea that the democratization of music was supposed to give the artist more creative control, allow them to self-produce, and enable them to have a direct line to their fans. However, as the dust has settled, it has only put more stress on artists to learn how to promote, market and become their own complaints department, taking them away from creating. This lack of support and management surrounding many artists and the way that society is currently undervaluing art is creating hustlers out of artists leaving little time for filling the creative well and self-care. “You need someone in your corner who will try and build protection for you to be able to create your work so that the gears of the star-making machinery doesn’t grind you down.” – Denise Donlon In this episode: Why it is important to the longevity of your career as an artist to not compromise your artistic integrity or vision. Why you need to learn to pick your battles to win the war What feminists can do in order to help make strides when it comes to women’s equality How she has dealt with imposter syndrome and turned it into a motivator President of Sony Music Canada, and various executive and on-air positions at ChumTelevision, The NewMusic and MuchMusic. Among other titles, Bruno Monteferri created Conservamos por Naturaleza, an NGO facilitating the organisation of events, cleanups and sustainable initiatives. In our conversation we get to know Bruno a bit better, as he introduces us to some of the projects he's leading at the moment. There are so many that it's quite hard to keep up as he's involved in protecting the waves, the rivers and the Rainforests of Peru. Bruno's latest creation, "A La Mar", is a documentary sponsored by Patagonia and Save the Waves, retracing the story of La Ley de Rompientes (the law of the breaks) ; La Ley De Rompientes is a groundbreaking Peruvian law that has been protecting surf breaks for the past 20 years. It's thanks to this law that Chicama has been preserved from man-made ocean infrastructure such as piers and oil rigs. What was really interesting, was that in the early 2000's a bunch of surfers dared to grasp the nettle to defend their local breaks. With a lot of dedication, political and technical work, this community of surfers managed to create the legal basis of a law that is now implemented nationwide. A la mar has been screened at the Adventure film Festival, FicSurf and the TNF Mountain film festival but it was made to be shared, so Bruno is offering to send it to whoever wants to get a copy. Hopefully by sharing it overseas, it will inspire surfers from all around the world to start influencing our leaders to change policies and protect more surf breaks. So don't hesitate to contact Bruno to get hold of a copy. On a more "surfy" perspective, Bruno gives us a guided tour of the best surf spots to visit if you are in Lima and shares his tips on preparing to ride Pico Alto, the Peruvian Mavericks. Bruno shredding it at Pico AltoTo get in touch with Bruno, you can contact him via email, see what he's doing in his NGO Conservamos Por Naturaleza. www.Hazlaportuolas.pe is the non profit in charge of protecting the waves of Peru and all donations go towards paying for the technical studies indispensable to prove the existence of surf breaks. Without the proof that the surf breaks exist, they cannot be enlisted as surf reserves. And to all you listeners out there, thank you for listening, it's such a pleasure to make these podcasts and even more of a pleasure to know that you are listening.
