As an author, Shai's most recent book is The New Reformation: Finding Hope in the Fight for Ethnic Unity (published in May 2021). Shai has been married to his wife Blair for 13 years. They have three children and live in Portland, OR. Ben Otero (@benotero) (Co-host) is a senior web developer for a Church Plant Media, an organization that serves churches and missions organizations. Ben grew up in Tampa, Florida before moving to Philadelphia to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a degree in economics. In addition to being a student of hip-hop culture, Ben is an elder at Crown and Joy Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia, where He lives with Jeraldine, his wife of 18 years, and their 8 children. William “Duce” Branch (@ambassador215) (a.k.a. The Ambassador) (Co-host) is a pioneering Christian Hip-hop artist and professor. Duce served for over a decade as a co-founder and leader, and primary spokesperson for the nationally acclaimed Christian rap ministry, The Cross Movement. He also co-planted and co-pastored an urban church in North Philadelphia from 2004-2009. Duce is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., where he also serves as an adjunct professor for the College at Southeastern. He and his wife Michelle have been married for 26 years. Both of his parents served in the U.S. Air Force and he and his brother, Joshua, grew up on military bases in Germany and South Korea. Cho graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa and upon graduating he performed theatre in the area with local theatre companies that include Jobsite, Stageworks, Hat Trick, Tampa Rep, American Stage, and Urbanite.Cho has also written a one-man show that he has performed at the Hollywood and New York Fringe Festivals. The show is called Mr. Yunioshi and is written for an Asian actor to play Mickey Rooney developing his character for Breakfast at Tiffany's. He has been both a Folio and City Regional Magazine Association writer of the year finalist. His co-written story on police surveillance was selected for the Pulitzer Center's 2021 Year in Review. Join us for a conversation and short tour with Ron Cassie to launch his book, If You Love Baltimore, It Will Love You Back: 171 Short but True Stories. The conversation will be moderated by Rafael Alvarez. Ron Cassie is a senior editor at Baltimore magazine, where he’s won national awards for his coverage of the death of Freddie Gray, sea-level rise on the Eastern Shore, and the opioid epidemic in Hagerstown. He reported from Haiti in the days following the tragic earthquake, New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and from Uganda as part of a humanitarian relief effort. His work has appeared as a notable selection in The Best of American Sports Writing, in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center, at CityLab, Newsweek, Huffington Post, Grist, The New York Daily News,The Baltimore Sun, several alternative weeklies, including Baltimore City Paper, and Urbanite, where he served as editor-in-chief before coming to Baltimore. He has been a finalist for the Folio and City and Regional Magazine Association Writer of the Year awards. He is a two-time Religion Writer of the Year runner-up. He teaches writing at Towson University and holds masters degrees from The Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University, where he is pursuing a doctorate degree. Prior to becoming a full-time journalist, he spent almost two decades swinging a hammer, riding a bike, and pouring drinks for a living. Marie Mutsuki Mockett, a fiction and nonfiction teacher at Rainier Writing Workshop and visiting writer in the MFA program at Saint Mary’s College, joins host Krys Boyd to talk about her exploration of her family’s heritage in rural Nebraska to understand a more conservative way of life. Her book is “American Harvest: God, Country, and Farming in the Heartland.”

The intent behind ORIGINS, a speaker series, was to highlight the farmers, fisherman, producers, and makers behind the local food movement in the Mid-Atlantic region. Spike Gjerde started his first restaurant, Woodberry Kitchen, with a commitment to local growers and producers. He and his team have returned more than $2.1 million annually to the local economy during the last several years. This episode will take a closer look at the economics of the local food system from both a retailer’s perspective and an Eastern Shore aggregator called Chesapeake Harvest, based in Easton, Maryland. In Episode #27, we continue the conversation with two local farmers, Dave Liker from Gorman Farms and Mark Toigo from Toigo Orchards. This episode’s panelists are Scott Nash and Tracy Ward. Scott Nash started MOM’s Organic Market at the age of 22 with an initial investment of $100 as a home delivery business out of his mom’s garage. On July 2nd 1987, MOM’s made its first sale delivering to a customer who lived in Rockville, MD. Since then, MOM’s has grown to become one of the nation's premier chains of family owned and operated organic grocery stores. MOM’s has nineteen stores in DC, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Tracy Ward has over 30 years of experience as an economic and community development leader, devoting her career to community transformation and change through collaborative public/private partnership and cross-disciplinary strategies. In 2004, Tracy founded Urbanite, an award-winning glossy magazine with a circulation of over 60,000 in the Baltimore metropolitan area.   After shuttering Urbanite in 2012, Tracy took a year off to work on farms and learn about our local food system.  In 2014, as executive director of the Easton Economic Development Corporation, Tracy started Chesapeake Harvest, a sales, marketing and branding organization committed to increasing sales of locally and sustainably grown food products in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Before starting Frost* Design in London in 1994, Vince was the youngest Associate Director at Pentagram. In 2004, he relocated to Sydney and, as Creative Director of Frost* Design, has lead a wide range of projects for clients such as Deutsch Bank, Qantas, Frasers Property and Sydney Opera House. Abstract: This lecture will discuss alternative approaches to urban energy modelling, suggesting that the most powerful and flexible approach is one of micro-simulation in which individuals (agents) may be explicitly simulated. The discussion will include: emerging procedures for generating and attributing a synthetic population of agents’ how their presence may subsequently be simulated at a range of potential destinations’ their activities within these destinations and the range of activity-dependent behaviours; likewise their investments in energy-related technologies and behavioural changes. The lecture will also outline some remaining challenges to the achievement of a fully comprehensive urban energy micro-simulation platform. Biography: Professor Darren Robinson is Chair in Building and Urban Physics and Deputy Head of the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Nottingham. For the past fifteen years his work has focused on the development of models of building occupants’ comfort and behaviour and of models of buildings’ energy use at the urban scale – these two interests now converging in the form of urban energy micro-simulation software. This is summarised in his most recent book “Computer Modelling for Sustainable Urban Design”. Darren has received the CIBSE Napier-Shaw Medal (2007), the Building and Environment journal Best Paper Award (2009 and 2010) and the JBPS Best Paper Prize (2010-2011).

Organic Christianity is practicing Christianity in its most pure and undiluted form. People are turning away from organized religion, and the concept of faith; however, there is power in a faith in God, a faith in Jesus Christ that is free from man-made traditions. Through principles from the life of Jesus Christ, I will teach about how, through a pure practice of our faith, we can experience the tangible power of God that energizes, enlightens, empowers and heals.

The past is a constant enemy that we must contend with in our thoughts. It is easy to feel trapped by our past regrets, misfortunes, and decisions. It takes faith to move forward, and we all have that faith within us to let go of the past and press forward into the amazing future that still awaits us. In this podcast, I will discuss how to use your faith to move forward.

Red flags are those early warning signs - indicators - that warn us not to proceed with a relationship. We are able to heed the red flags and pull back before we find ourselves involved in a relational train wreck. In this teaching, I review what are different types of red flags, why we don't heed the warnings, and how to overcome the temptation to go past the red flags.

As the month of June ends, and we head into July, we are officially at the mid-point of the year. For many of us, we started the year off with goals we desired to accomplish and changes we desired to make. Now, as we are at the second-half of the year, it is review time. Where are you at with accomplishing those goals and making those changes? I would like to share a secret with you. I recently read a study that stated by the middle of the year, over 50% of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. I also read a story in the Wall Street Journal that stated over 88% of New Year’s resolutions are unsuccessful. In this teaching, I would like to share a biblical secret to help you push pass those internal limitations that cause change to be so elusive.

Modesty has been a buzzword in the Christian community for centuries. The emphasis on women dressing modestly is truly a perpetual discussion in churches that never ends in a universal conclusion. In our fallen world, sexualized images of immodestly dressed women have always canvassed the landscape from ancient art to modern-day magazines and billboards. The desire within women to be seen as beautiful and within men to see beautiful female bodies puts us in this modesty dilemma. In this teaching, I want to show you how the concept of dressing modestly begins with a philosophy of the heart that transfers over into outward appearance, and I want to point out how the approach of making it a physical dynamic really creates a lot of guilt, self-consciousness, repression, and condemnation in women.

It is important to keep your heart in a position of being yielded and open to God. In this teaching, I will discuss that when we get our hearts so closed on a specific direction or on a specific decision that we become hardened to receiving and obeying God's perfect will, and He permits us to do what we want. We want to avoid having a hardened heart because we want to experience God's best for our lives and that is His perfect will. I will review with you the difference between the perfect will of God and the permissible will of God, how we develop a hardened heart towards God, and how to avoid it so that we can live in God's perfect will.

I remember I heard a minister say that if people focused long enough, they might just fulfill their destinies. This statement became imprinted on my brain as I watched my struggle to stay focused on what I wanted to accomplish; even at points, being so distracted, that I forgot certain goals I wanted to achieve. We live in a world that basically goes against people being focused. There is so much information we are trained to believe we need, multiple entertainment options that we must choose from, unlimited places to see, a variety of conversations we must have, and multiple tasks that require completion in not enough time. In the midst of all this activity and busyness, fulfillment escapes many of us because we weren’t focused on what were suppose to accomplish with the time given to us. In this teaching, I will discuss how to overcome a culture of distractions by identifying, what I believe, are the two different categories of distractions, and giving you some key biblical principles to overcome them so that you can stay focused and walk in the fulfillment of your destiny.

It is never easy on anyone to learn that they have been deceived. In a real world with real consequences, very few of us will laugh when we find out the trick was on us. The emotional and psychological effects people experience as a result of being deceived can be so devastating that it negatively alters their personality and perspective on life. Judas is known as the apostle who betrayed Jesus; however, Judas’ story did not end with his betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane. Through his story, we will learn how to successfully recover from falling prey to deception.
