James Kabrhel, Ph.D., and Jeff Bellomo were college roommates more than 20 years ago and have remained good friends ever since. Today, Jim is an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. Jim and Jeff reflect on the importance of mentors, relationships, hard work, finding the right environment, and playing to your strengths.    Check out Jim's science podcast: Baloney Detection with Dr. K.     WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (00:00) Episode introduction. (02:35) Raised in East Stroudsburg, Jim found a home away from home at Juniata College. In choosing a college, he recognized that a smaller school would be a better fit for him.   (06:05) Jim's high school science teacher inspired his interest in chemistry. At Juniata, his chemistry professor deepened Jim's desire to pursue chemistry as a career.  (07:51) Jim earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. The environment and his advisor had a tremendous influence on Jim's ability to thrive.  (13:19) At Juniata, Jeff's three roommates all studied the hard sciences, which led to some funny moments for him. Looking back, Jeff and Jim recognize that everyone has their own special set of strengths, but there is no substitute for hard work.   (16:35) Jim and his wife, Amy, first bonded over Harry Potter. Today they share a home in Wisconsin right on Lake Michigan.  (22:03) Higher education is going through an interesting time of change.   (23:37) Amy is also an associate professor. In addition to traditional chemistry classes, she and Jim teach sustainability chemistry, scientific literacy, and an intense organic chemistry boot camp. (25:58) Jim's research into pseudoscience and misinformation in product marketing is the focus of his podcast:  Baloney Detection with Dr. K.     ABOUT BELLOMO & ASSOCIATES Jeffrey R. Lipidomics is the comprehensive analysis of lipids and their interactions in biological systems, with an aim to understand the role of lipids in cellular processes and their association with diseases. As we age, our cells undergo complex changes, including alterations in cellular lipid profiles. These changes are not only confined to humans; organisms such as the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) are also subject to changes in lipid composition during aging. “For example, lipid classes including fatty acids (FA), triacylglycerols (TAG), sphingolipids (SL), and phospholipids (PL) have been identified as targets in lipid signatures related to aging [2, 3]. Furthermore, specific signatures are detected in the lipid profiles of those with age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease [4–9]. In addition, the abundance of many fatty acid subtypes differs between the youth, elderly, and centenarians [10, 11].” In a recent study, researchers Trisha A. Staab, Grace McIntyre, Lu Wang, Joycelyn Radeny, Lisa Bettcher, Melissa Guillen, Margaret P. Peck, Azia P. Kalil, Samantha P. Bromley, Daniel Raftery, and Jason P. Chan from Marian University, the University of Washington and Juniata College investigate the lipid profiles of C. elegans with mutations in the genes asm-3/acid sphingomyelinase and hyl-2/ceramide synthase during aging. On February 13, 2023, their research paper was published in Aging's Volume 15, Issue 3, entitled, “The lipidomes of C. elegans with mutations in asm-3/acid sphingomyelinase and hyl-2/ceramide synthase show distinct lipid profiles during aging.” Full blog - https://aging-us.org/2023/02/the-role-of-lipids-in-aging-insights-from-c-elegans/ DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.204515 Corresponding author - Jason P. When choosing professional services, it helps to know the people behind the logo. What's their backstory? What motivates them? Are they the kind of people you can trust? Jeff Bellomo has been asked to provide a more personal look at his background, his family, and the experiences that have formed his approach to helping people with their estate planning and elder law needs. He also talks about how his law practice has evolved and the dedicated team that shares his mission and a meaningful set of core values. Key Takeaways  Takeaway 1: Jeff has deep roots in Pennsylvania - 01:49 Jeff is originally from Scranton. He loves Old Forge-style pizza, especially Jigsy's in Enola. Jeff grew up in Ebensburg and graduated from Central Cambria High School where he participated in sports, band, choir, and plays. He learned discipline as a wrestler in school and regularly attends the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Jeff attended Juniata College where he met Whitney, who is now his wife and an elementary school teacher. His undergraduate work included a year of study in England. He interned at the White House and the National Drug Intelligence Center. Jeff graduated from Widener University Commonwealth Law School in Harrisburg. DeAnna—Jeff and Whitney's 13-year-old daughter—plays the flute, loves theatre, and is certified as a “junior master” scuba diver. Takeaway 2: Jeff knew he wanted to specialize in estate planning and elder law – 13:24 After law school, Jeff and Whitney moved to York and still reside in Dallastown. He chose his specialty area because of what his family experienced when his mother took ill (as discussed in episode 11). Jeff started Bellomo & Associates, an education-based practice, in 2009. The team offers free weekly workshops—estate planning, special needs planning, probate and trust administration, and Medicaid planning—to improve how the legal profession works with clients. The firm now has two locations (York and Lancaster). Takeaway 3: Jeff's work with Lawyers with Purpose helped him develop a better approach to the practice of law – 18:09 Lawyers with Purpose teaches lawyers the systems and processes that promote fairness and trust when working with clients.  Jeff taught for the organization for 5-1/2 years. Bellomo & Associates currently has a staff of 24 people, who share a mission and core values. Team members believe in the importance of educating and caring for the elder law community. Takeaway 4: Family is everything - 20:52 Jeff's wife and his daughter are his “everything.” His dad and sister's family are in the Pittsburgh area. They love spending time together. Jeff's mother passed in 2015. Her story is the driving force behind his work in estate planning and elder law. What happens when the right thing for your family isn't the best for your career? Mandy shares her guilt-free perspective and why work makes her a better mom. Honor your motherhood style: why a “one size fits all” approach doesn't work when it comes to parenting choices. Small, incremental steps are the key to success: Be authentic and follow your gut when starting your business-- you do not have to do what everyone else is doing or have everything perfect.Mandy Siglin has a lot of titles: Mother to three + PhD, yoga instructor and mindset coach. Siglin received her PhD in Molecular Pharmacology and Structural Biology from Thomas Jefferson University.  She lovingly served as the Director of Juniata College's Health Professions Program for five years. When family circumstances took her away from her Director position right before the pandemic hit, she had to make a pivot. Inspired by her ability to change the students she worked with in the past with her unique science and mindset perspective, she founded ThiveMed, a company dedicated to the wellbeing of pre-med students. Involved in all aspects of the Penn State men's volleyball program as a player, assistant coach and head coach and one of the winningest and well-respected coaches in the sport, Mark Pavlik is in his 28th year at the helm of the Nittany Lion men's volleyball program in Happy Valley. A return to competition in 2021 set the stage for Pavlik to win his 600th career match and continued a special season as he led Penn State to Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) regular-season and tournament championships, an NCAA Tournament victory and a 20-plus win season for the 22nd time in his head coaching career. Pavlik resides in McAlevys Fort, Pennsylvania, with his wife, the former Heather Blough, and their son Jackson. Heather, a three-time AVCA First Team All-American setter for Juniata College, is now the head coach for the Eagles women's volleyball team that won the Division III National championship in 2004 and 2006 under head coach Larry Bock. We discuss: -First being introduced to the sport and falling in love with the game -His experience as a freshman at PSU -Deciding to manage the team his junior and senior year -Having the self-realization that being a "player" was not in his future, but being a coach could be... -Remaining kind and gracious during wins and losses -Sharing the motto for identify potential in sports; "either you can do it or not." You can touch the top of the backboard or not. You can set for a Division One team or not. This way you know where you belong. -Leaving skin in the south gym, that helped me get over my regret of quitting the team over 30 years ago -Two main differentiators in the game: 1. Are you AVAILABLE (to make the commitment) and 2. Can you make those around you BETTER? -Being a conduit for culture, and adopting the BEST from the prior era's to build the program -Teaching players that "they are writing their story right now". They can determine how it ends based on their efforts today. -Not everyone is at 80% working efficiency every day, but you better show up giving all 100% of your ability on any day. -Respect each other, no one has a great day everyday, help each other out -Surround yourself with people that want to help you achieve excellence As I write this, my 1987 Third Place NCCA Trophy sits on my bookshelf and the memories will remain in my heart forever. From the Archives: Let them Score? Coaching analytics and in-game strategy. Rob Ash - Championship Analytics, Inc. In this strange 2020 season, the things we talk about but usually don’t happen are happening. Case in point - Penn State vs. Indiana. It’s the end of the game and up 1 all Penn State has to do is get a first down and run out the clock. It’s actually not to their advantage to score. The only thing Indiana can do to have a chance is to let them score. The intricacies involved in coaching this up on either side of it come down to preparation. Former college head coach Rob Ash and I discussed this on the Coach and Coordinator Podcast. Simply stated, it’s something that needs to be practiced and there should be a mechanism in both the defense to let the offense score, and for the offense to know not to score. It could be a code word for the offense that gets tagged into the call. The defense obviously has to have a call for this as well, and the best coaches know all of it must be practiced. Rule of thumb: Never do something in a game that hasn’t been practiced! Penn State mistakenly scored and it came down to a controversial two-point play in overtime to end it and give the Hoosier the upset. Today's Coach and Coordinator podcast guest is Rob Ash, director of coaching development at Championship Analytics, Inc., which helps coaches strategize through analytics. Ash spent 36 years as a head coach at the FCS and NCAA Division III levels before working as an offensive analyst at Arkansas. His coaching stops included Montana State (2007-15), Drake (1989-2006) and Juniata College (1980-88). Christian Argument from Prophecy Debunked

Progressive Spirit

Did Jesus fulfill prophecy? The gospels certainly wanted early Christians to think that. That argument is made today in many evangelical circles. But does it hold water? Religious scholar, Robert J. Miller, says that it is time for Christians to retire the argument from prophecy. He shows how the gospel writers manipulated prophecies by taking them out of context, changing them, inventing them, and even creating fictional narratives about Jesus based on them to show that Jesus fulfilled prophecy.  Miller shows that the New Testament writers “helped” Jesus fulfill prophecy in order to “prove” that Christians replaced Jews as God’s people. According to Miller, the argument from prophecy is circular, not convincing, and unnecessary. It also has left a long legacy of antisemitism. Robert J. Miller is Rosenberger Professor of Religious Studies and Christian Thought at Juniata College in Pennsylvania. He is the author of The Jesus Seminar and Its Critics and Born Divine: The Births of Jesus and Other Sons of God. He is also editor of The Complete Gospels (Fourth Edition). His latest book that we will discuss today is called Helping Jesus Fulfill Prophecy.

Ketrick Jr., president of the Association of Water Technologies. Bruce began his career in the pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative and later a technical trainer. Bruce's career in water technologies started 13 years ago with Guardian CSC. During his employment with Guardian CSC he has held various positions including Field Service Representative, Sales Management, and Business Manager. Bruce has been involved in the creation and management of new companies and divisions including: EnvoGuard an environmental products company, KTS (Ketrick Technical Services) a custom blending, specialty products, technical support and consulting company, and the Equipment Division of Guardian CSC offering design, installation and support of industrial water technologies equipment with a focus on controls, reverse osmosis, pretreatment and filters. Bruce earned his BS in Biology from Juniata College and holds the CWT (Certified Water Technologist) designation. In this episode Bruce is sharing with us how to get involved in associations such as AWT. He’s also telling us what’s going on in the association, what one can expect from the association, how he got involved and where he sees AWT going in the future. We also talk about water softeners and answer some listener questions in “Pinks and Blues.” Water Softeners Water softening is a technique that serves the removal of the ions that cause the water to be hard (or form scale,) in most cases calcium and magnesium ions. Iron ions may also be removed during softening. A water softener is a unit that is used to soften water, by removing the minerals that cause the water to be hard. If you’ve ever taken a softener apart you’ll notice that it has resin beads inside. The purpose of the resin beads is to provide an exchange surface for ion. The ions we’re specifically talking about is calcium and magnesium. The resin is full of sodium and we’re putting it online and we’re putting hard water through it. This hard water contains calcium and magnesium and it’s flowing through across the resin bead. The resin bead wants the calcium and magnesium so it spits off the sodium and collects the calcium and magnesium until there’s no more sodium for it to trade. Once that happens, we start passing hard water again which isn’t the purpose of the water softener. Now we have to go through the process of regeneration. The resin is also acting as a filter. In order to regenerate to softener you have to follow five steps. The first step is to backwash where we reverse the flow. The next step is brining, brine travels through the salt storage area up into the resin tank. Step three is the slow rinse, where we flush hard minerals and brine from the resin tank into the drain. The fourth step is the fast rinse, the same as the slow rinse, just faster. It packs down the resin beads to make sure there’s no channeling. The final step is refilling the brine tank. Now that you have a water softener you have to make sure you test properly for it. Key Points From This Episode: • How Bruce found himself in the business of water treatment. • Hear more about the dynamic of second and multi-generational businesses • Why flexibility and decision making is both a positive and a negative for business owners. • The importance of listening and asking questions in order to learn. • Common mistakes made by water treaters. • What holding the CWT designation means for Bruce. • Hear about Bruce’s journey starting out in the AWT and his rise to president. • Understand Bruce’s tasks during his leadership year as president of the AWT. • How the AWT is laser focused on the water treatment industry. • Find out why decisions made at the AWT are made on the benefit and values of membership. • Discover the purpose and mission of the AWT. • Resources being spent on online fundamentals by the AWT. • Identify how a new water treater can take advantage of offerings by the AWT. • Tools and resources being made available through the AWT. • Hear more about the upcoming AWT Convention taking place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. • And much more!
