Boards - Geopolitical challenges & Diversity

The Better Boards Podcast Series

Geopolitical dynamics have evolved recently and will continue to grow more complex, with even more impact in the foreseeable future.  Companies operating in more than one jurisdiction are particularly vulnerable to geopolitical risks, although these can also present opportunities.  Can boards afford to steer clear, or is the boardroom the best place to build resilience and pave the way to opportunity? In this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski Founder and Managing Partner of Better Boards discuss geopolitical challenges with Nassib Abou-Kahlil, named one of the 20 top corporate legal officers by the Financial Times in June 2021.  Nassib held senior legal roles at Yahoo!, GE Oil & Gas, Etisalat and TMF Netherlands and most recently as Chief Legal Officer at Nokia. “Keep an open mind; the world is extremely diverse”Nassib opens by observing that the complexity around Geopolitics is enormous but not insurmountable. In his mind, it is vital to keep an open mind. He relates his experiences with new challenges and working in numerous jurisdictions, involving not just managing complex laws, but also accommodating values and reconciling contradictions, whether cultural, legal or between values in the multi-jurisdictional environment.  This is a delicate exercise in understanding, foreseeing, mitigating and managing.  “There is no one size fits all”Nassib explains that he believes there is no ‘one size fits all' approach, so whatever approach is taken needs to be well adapted to the specific business and relevant circumstances.  This must be taken into account when assessing the impact of a particular development and is achieved through utilising regulators and other geopolitical experts and analysts. Nassib describes how insights alone neither help solve nor achieve anything, so mitigation is necessary. “Yes, this is a board-level discussion… …not in every detail, but at a strategic level”In Nassib's view, it is essential for geopolitical issues to be a board-level conversation, and the board is potentially one of the bodies best placed for future-proofing organisations.  He explains that one of the most important tasks of the board in this context is weighing in on the strategy of a company, and assessing and deciding how a company addresses its geopolitical risks.  “Lack of diversity and diverse perspectives, and challenges in perspective is potentially one of the greatest red flags”Nassib holds the view that the biggest threat to boards and future-proofing is the potential lack of diversity on the board. In his experience, the power of diverse perspectives invariably leads to better decision-making and broader insights. “The biggest risk in diversity is defining diversity narrowly”Nassim relates how he has always thought of diversity in the broadest sense of the word, including cultural experience, racial diversity, social mobility, and other aspects of diversity.  Many companies are operating in an extremely diverse environment, yet their boards do not reflect this.  The three top takeaways from our conversation are:1.      Geopolitical dynamics are here to stay, so keep in mind that today's decisions may come back to haunt you tomorrow. If you exit a country today because of the geopolitical dynamics, this doesn't mean that you won't want to re-enter it later, and people will remember your actions.2.     Focus on diversity, looking for potential and not experience, defining diversity in the broadest sense and committing to it. 3.     Build awareness, including self-awareness, by understanding your geopolitical dependencies your footprint and your operations.

KEY TAKEAWAYS: Know what hat you're wearing - we've got to be very clear about how we signal the people working in our team in what capacity we are speaking. Business is an ecosystem and we all have our specific job to do. It's not your IP, it's not your brand, it's not all the other things that we put together, it's who you are as you appear in front of your client. Linking to the passion that you do things with becomes self-energizing, and that becomes your strength.  When you appear more authentic, you will come across as more credible - when you connect better you create more sales  Have a strategy about being as decisive as doing what you are not going to do and what you're going to do. Michael Downs Positive Technologies (https://positive-tech.com/) is a global cybersecurity company that has pioneered research into telecoms security, discovering over 50 methods for exploiting telecoms vulnerabilities and dozens of zero-day flaws in telecoms systems. Through its work simulating the actions of would-be attackers to help network operators protect their subscribers and services, it was the first to discover security issues associated with communications protocol, Signaling Systems 7 (SS7), which can be exploited to remotely intercept phone calls and bypass 2-factor authentication for access to social media profiles. The company's testing has repeatedly shown that exploits—including signaling fraud attacks, customer data theft, and SMS interception—are still possible on all tested networks despite advances in LTE and 5G. Operators working with Positive Technologies include O2, Telecom Italia Sparkle, VimpelCom (VEON), Ooredoo, Etisalat, Sky Mobile, SK Telecom, Wind Tre, Tele2, Telcel, Turkcell. Its flagship Telecom Cybersecurity Suite enables network. Valentine Ubalua is the founder & CEO of Nicademia. He is an alumnus of Lagos Business School and a graduate of Computer Science from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. He is a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist and proficient in Web design, web development, PHP, Game development, mobile app development and lots more. He has over 10years of industry experience in ICT, Media & the Entertainment industry. He has worked for the government, Etisalat and other brands. He is the producer of Nigeria's most popular educational animation series 'MUDI Goes To School' with over 2million weekly views, showing on 7 local and international TV channels including DSTV. Below is a summary of the interview Exploring The Business in Animation with Valentine Ubalua He mentioned that his interest in animation had come from his early Fascination in Information and Communication Technology, ICT. He recounted that his journey into the animation industry had been borne out of the learning disability, dyslexia, that he was faced with while growing up. He always found himself at the bottom of the class but could describe a cartoon show minutes after watching it on TV. On reaching the university, He took to converting his notes to audio-visuals, with graphical representations. This eventually saw him finish among the top of his class. He described the process of animation as a system of creating motion with different images or drawings while pointing out that animation was a very tasking job. He stated that they were different areas in animation and anyone could get into the industry if they had passion and time for it. He also discussed the dimensions in Animation such as 2D which are flat images and 3D which are 360 images in motion. Speaking on the process of making animation he said that it often started from a good story as compared to filmmaking leading to the animation which is at the last phase. He said there was the conceptualization stage, scripting, after which a storyboard artist does a rough sketch of each scene, then the animatics after which the clients approve the project. He said that animation could be tasking as the client sometimes may not approve a scene and that would mean starting the process all over again. Even to rendering the final output he said that two supercomputers were needed and this often took two days to complete, this he said all added to the cost of production. Even as the industry was still young as compared to other countries, he expressed his optimism saying that he believed that Africa would soon be the next destination for future animation productions. He went on to say that animation was a gold mine as it was the richest in the entertainment industry as the animation market was worth 404 billion dollars globally. He spoke further saying that animation productions lasted forever even as money could also be made from branding characters on valuable items and merchandising. He remarked also saying that animation was a lucrative business in Nigeria if one is good at it and is able to also show their works to the public so people can patronize them. He called on parents to help expose their children and equip them with digital skills. He also put in that interested persons could learn the process of animation from start to finish over the web or they could go over to any training institute. He lamented on the dearth of animators in the Nigerian Animation industry as they were not enough skilled hands. He also motioned on youths to acquire digital skills that would equip them and would also set them apart.

Things aren't going so well for Man City exile Joe Hart, but can a cockney hardman make it all better? It's all in another episode of football funny, and one where Jim doesn't swear. And if setting a points record would not necessarily be enough to establish City as the best Premier League team of all time, then which team deserves that distinction? Jose Mourinho gave Paul Pogba another rocket after Manchester United lost 1-0 to West Brom. Can the two of them afford to take the chance that everything will work itself out in their third season together? Mobile telcos on the continent are certainly having a rough time of it on the continent. In the same week that MTN South Africa CEO, Mteto Nyati, announced his resignation, a consortium of banks including Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank and Zenith Bank reportedly assumed control of Etisalat Nigeria over an outstanding $1.72 billion loan. Media reports suggesting that Etisalat Nigeria failed to meet its debt servicing obligations since 2016 have led to speculation over what might have contributed to this crisis-- could it be unsound management decisions or simply an unfortunate consequence of operating in Nigeria's recessionary environment? In this week's African Tech Round-up, Simon Dingle joins Andile on the show to comment on the week's biggest headlines and to discuss the import (or lack thereof) of Bitcoin reaching price parity with gold, as well as to share insights on the exciting potential of blockchain technology to revolutionise monetary regimes on the continent.
