Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
What are your goals for agency growth? Would you like to grow your agency to 7- or 8-figures? That is exactly what this agency owner did when he built a highly successful $50 million-dollar agency with a team of 400 people. He did it by staying ahead of the curve with technology and building leaders who evolve with the growing agency. Robert Henderson is the co-founder and CEO of JumpCrew, an agency that generates demand for 2B2 customers by building a qualified pipeline through fully dedicated sales teams. Robert has built a successful agency by growing in the direction of the market, staying ahead of the curve, and building strong leadership. In this episode, we'll discuss: The future of marketing in the metaverse. Staying ahead of the curve with technology. Building a leadership that evolves with your agency. Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio | Stitcher | Radio FM Building a $50 Million Dollar Agency Many agency owners starting out are interested in “tricks” to get ahead and grow their agency as fast as possible. They seem so interested in growth they don't stop to think about the value they should be providing. When he started out, Robert saw many businesses shied away from learning how to acquire new clients. Communicating value is something he really leans into with each new client. He doesn't sell a one-size-fits-all solution because it's specific enough or aligned with what the client needs. Instead, his team focuses on how to deliver value in a way that aligns with the client's goals. Also, they are self-aware enough to turn away clients when they feel that they can't deliver this value. Whatever the reason, they try to be really candid about good and bad fits. The most important piece of building a successful agency is aligning with the right people. Every business is ultimately about people and when you create an environment where each team member is an expert in their area you don't need to know everything. Partnering with people who really know about their particular area will you set your agency up for success. The secret is having people that are really good at executing what they know. The Effect of New Technologies and the Metaverse on the Future of Marketing Robert and his team learned the power of content marketing while automating content for local businesses. They learned what the market needed by being in the mix. They grew in that direction by adding new products and services based on the feedback from clients. Robert is a believer in new and emerging tech tools and giving platforms the credit they deserve as they develop. Sometimes we can't imagine the progress a new technology will represent in our particular space. For instance, 10 years ago no one was interested in being a guest on a podcast and now they have become a very popular marketing vehicle. Looking ahead, Robert believes in ten years from now the meetings we're having on video today will all happen on the metaverse. People from all over the world will gather in a space that feels very realistic. The adoption of mediums like the metaverse will come with the technology and infrastructures to support them. At this point, adopting this new technology will maybe shape the way the supporting technologies start to develop. He believes the possibilities are endless as we still can't imagine the many ways that we'll use it. The development of paid search started with the rate of adoption of social media platforms. Similarly, the development of the metaverse as the possible future of paid ads will depend on how people start to adopt this new technology. These tools are bound to change the way agencies work and advertise and, of course, being the first to adopt them successfully would be a great advantage. We need to continue to study and educate ourselves to be able to see where it is heading. Staying Ahead of the Curve with Technology Staying ahead of the curve is mostly about educating yourself and trying to understand what the opportunities look like to capitalize on them as they come. We're in a learning phase for technologies like the metaverse. We know it will be a part of the future but we don't know exactly how that will look. Right now it's about trying to create more connectivity between your team in what is set to be a more sophisticated environment. Robert believes this is the low-hanging fruit available right now for all until we can figure out how to get our partners and clients into it. However, the technology is still in the very early stages. For instance, no one wants to work 6 to 7 hours with the VR goggles on. There's still a long way to go before it is adapted to everyday use and usage is what will help shape that. Evolving Team Member Roles as the Agency Grows One of the most difficult phases for his agency was at a point when a lot of things were working great but they couldn't figure out why some others were not working at all. In hindsight, they just didn't have the right infrastructure and didn't have all the right people in the right seats. It's really fun to be part of so much growth but it can also be a struggle to remain motivated and challenge yourself every single day, month, and year. Robert's leadership team has been with the agency since they were just ten people. This team has helped grow the agency to over 400 people. How did they do it? First of all, they've had to continue growing themselves. Their role in the agency business has changed and they've reinvented themselves several times. Being open to the idea of constantly evolving in order to be able to grow has really helped them support the agency's growth. Each employee remains flexible and open to change for their own growth as well as that of the agency. Building Leaders Who Help Grow a Strong Agency Robert built the leadership team in such a way that they've basically been with him since the very beginning. Of course, they were not all prepared for a leadership role from the beginning. Building an agency as a team of just 10 people helped a lot when it came to building camaraderie. They had different titles but were very much equals and shared the same values. It also helped build a level of communication not often seen in a team where they are able to have hard conversations and be very honest with each other. Robert also encouraged an environment for taking risks. He feels it is important to challenge leaders to take risks without the fear of making mistakes. This doesn't mean they make mistakes all the time, but in order to go for innovation, the team needs to know that it's ok if something doesn't work out as they'd hoped. That's right, this time on Planet 8, we take on that ugly mutha f#@%! -The Predator! An iconic creature design, and a classic original film, your crew takes a look at not only that first film, but the maybe not so great films that followed! The 1987 Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is one of the great sci fi action films, but the Predator itself went through many changes before we got the amazing alien hunter we see on screen. We'll go through all the mis-fires and how we eventually got the brilliant design from legendary Stan Winston and his team. Of course, you have to bring the suit to life, and we can't forget the portrayal of the Predator by the late Kevin Peter Hall. He gave the Predator a real sense of intelligence and personality. The first film also featured a very entertaining cast as the special crack team of commandos. Besides Arnold as the leader, Dutch, there was Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Sonny Landham, and Carl Weathers. This strong set of characters contributes to the enjoyment of the film, so that the viewer is glued to the screen even when the Predator is not around. Predator moves from action film to sci fi to horror and back around again, but does it flawlessly, with perfect pacing, keeping the suspense going in the early parts, right up to the final battle between Dutch and the Predator. It's hard to find fault in this film. Even Alan Silvestri's score is perfect! However, the subsequent cinematic appearances of the Predator have never measured up to the first one. Predator 2, with Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Ruben Blades, Maria Conchita Alonso, and Bill Paxton, was set in Los Angeles in 1997 (released in 1990) and featured a new predator hunting in the sweltering city. While it's still fun seeing the Predator, it just isn't as interesting as the original. The cast doesn't gel as well. But there are some cool bits, especially towards the end when Glover faces the Predator and enters his spaceship. The further we get away from the original, the more the quality suffers. AVP -Alien vs. Predator - seems like a sure fire concept, but it was a bit of a mess. AVP:Requiem -well, we didn't even rewatch it! 2010's Predators is somewhat entertaining, but we all agree, Adrien Brody was miscast as the tough special forces guy. It had some nice variations on the basic predator design though. But the worst of all the follow ups was 2018's The Predator - there are stories that this film was heavily rewritten and edited, but even so, good lord, what a terrible film. While not an official Predator film, a flick we do love is the short film Batman: Dead End, which features the Dark Knight versus both Predators and Aliens. You can see it here on YouTube. Will anyone ever be able to make another truly terrific Predator movie? What would it take? Is it just a limited concept? What do you think? For our Sensor Sweep this time, Recon Office Karen shares one of her beloved pieces from her collection, her Sideshow Legendary Scale Bust of the unmasked Predator. This was produced in 2011 and is still available from certain stores and on eBay. It's about 16" high and has all the fine detail we've come to expect from Sideshow. So if you're a big fan of the Predator, you might want to hunt it down! That's all for this time. Let us know what you think of the different Predator films, and what we discussed in this episode.Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastRemember: If it bleeds, we can kill it!

In 1979, we learned that in space, no one can hear you scream. But there was plenty of screaming in movie theaters, as audiences jumped and shrieked, scared senseless by the phenomenon that was Alien. It was a film like no one had seen before, a horror story in space, with a truly terrifying alien creature. Pitched as "Jaws in space," it was just as suspenseful, but had a sense of claustrophobia and body horror that Jaws lacked. Your Planet 8 crew are big fans of the original Alien and its follow up, Aliens. These two films are so perfect, and complement each other so brilliantly, yet are so completely different in tone. We'll take a look at the ground-breaking 1979 film, its amazing visuals, impressive cast, and of course, the alien itself, the xenomorph, a true icon of creature design. The distinctive H.R. Giger designs made the film stand out from anything that had ever come before - and made your skin crawl! It also made a star out of Sigourney Weaver. Alien was her first big film, and she gave a memorable performance as Ripley. It was unusual at that time for a woman to not only be the protagonist, but to be so self-sufficient and capable. Weaver wound up being the star of the franchise for years to come. The 1986 sequel, Aliens, went in a completely different direction thematically, and was more of an action film than a horror film. This worked surprisingly well. The space marines that Ripley teams up with were as interesting a group as the Nostromo crew from the original film. Actors we now know so well like Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, all provide classic performances. The film also gave us tons of aliens, including a giant alien queen. And just like the first film, everything was achieved with practical special effects, no CGI! Ah, those were the days.Of course, we have to talk a bit about the soundtracks - the films had two well-known composers, Jerry Goldsmith on Alien and James Horner on Aliens. Both interesting soundtracks, but very different, and some of Horner's cues have been used on a number of trailers. And Aliens sure sounds a lot like parts of his Wrath of Khan soundtrack! These two films are still fantastic to watch and are true classics of science fiction film. If you haven't seen them in a while (or ever!), check them out. You will not be disappointed. For our Sensor Sweep this episode, Karen appropriately shares an amazing coffee table book from Titan Books called The Making of Alien by J.W. Rinzler. This 300+ page tome does a deep dive into the origins of Alien, and is illustrated with production designs and behind the scenes photos. Ah, the 70s...it was a time of contradictions, mixing the free love of the 60s with the pessimism from Viet Nam and Watergate. A number of dystopian sci-fi films came out of the decade, and one of our favorites was Logan's Run, an MGM movie from 1976. Starring Michael York and Jenny Agutter, the movie takes place in the 23rd century, where everyone lives in domes and all their needs are provided for, and they lead lives of complete pleasure and decadence. The catch is, everyone has to die at the age of 30 to maintain the balance. To enforce this balance, there are officers known as Sandmen, who hunt down any citizens who try to live past 30 -they are known as "runners." The main character, Logan, is one of these Sandmen. He winds up becoming a runner himself, and discovers what lies outside the dome.It might seem a little cheesy today, but your Planet 8 crew loves Logan's Run! Please join us as we explore not only this classic sci fi film, but what was going on in the world at the time that influenced it - ecological disaster, overpopulation, and energy crises. In some ways, Logan's Run was one of the last science fiction films that actually dealt with real issues - before the juggernaut of Star Wars and its imitators showed up the next year, ushering in the era of sci fi shoot 'em ups.Of course, we have to discuss Box, one of Commander Larry's favorite characters in all of science fiction! "Fish! Plankton! Seagreens! Protein from the sea!" Box so inspired Larry that this podcast was almost called "Plankton from the Sea" instead of Planet 8! Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed. And we'll pay tribute to Michael York and Jenny Agutter, who seems to have earned a place in many a fan's heart from her role as Jessica. And who can forget that Farrah Fawcett also had a small role in the film?Karen actually went back and re-read the 1967 novel that the film was based on, and so we'll look at the differences between the film and the book. If you thought dying at 30 was bad, try kicking off at 21!Beyond the film, we'll also look at the peripheral material - the very short-lived TV show and the Marvel comics adaptation. And -what is the connection between Logan's Run and Thanos? Tune in and find out!For our Sensor Sweep, Karen shares her original 1976 edition of the Logan's Run novel that was issued as a tie-in with the film, complete with photos from the movie. This was something that was done a lot back in the 70s - another great example of this was the original Star Wars adaptation. Before the internet, this was one of the best ways to see high quality pictures from a film!So where are you at with your life clock? Are you going to try to renew on Carousel, or will you run? The home inspection is a crucial part of the process for both the buyer and the seller, although it is designed primarily to protect the buyer. When you're looking at a house, you want to be able to focus on whether or not it's the right house for you. You don't want to worry about the nuts and bolts of the home. Once you have your house under contract, there will be a contingency that allows you to have an inspector examine the nuts and bolts for you.Inspectors keep an eye out for safety concerns and things that will affect the home value. The inspector will climb up into the attic and check insulation, and look out for wiring issues as well, among other things. It's important to choose the right inspector. Don't choose a lax inspector. We know the best inspectors in the area. You want someone thorough, but also someone who won't cause unnecessary alarm. If there is a major issue with the home, and the seller won't fix it, you do have the option to back out of the house. From a seller's standpoint, it's important to understand that you should designate some money for inspection repairs. No house passes an inspection 100%. An inspector will find something, and it's smart to have a budget set aside. Some sellers even have an inspection ahead of time so that they can make the repairs before an offer has even been made. The most important thing is to choose the right inspector. Listen to your real estate agent, because they will have an inspector they know and trust to work with you. If you have any questions, give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you!

People are always asking us questions about this topic, so today we want to clear the air.A home warranty is from a 3rd-party company that will cover different components of your house for the first few years you own it. It's very similar to the coverage on an insurance policy, but the deductible is a little lower and the claim response is a little faster. We recommend home warranties for all of our buyers and sellers. For sellers, you can buy a home warranty and advertise it as an incentive to buyers. If you use one of our home warranty companies, your coverage starts on the day you list your home with us, and transfers over to the buyer, who will have it for a full year. We think this is a great option for sellers, especially if something goes wrong. In that case, you don't have to deal with the hassle of renegotiating repairs, you can simply give the home warranty company a call, and they will have someone come out and fix it for a low cost. Generally, a home warranty is around $400, but you can add different components to give you more coverage. If you have any specific questions about this, or any real estate questions at all, give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to speaking with you!

Check out what a valued past client had to say about us!Sanjay Varshney:"I moved here 10 years ago from Syracuse, New York. When I moved here, it was a very interesting time - the market was climbing very quickly and homes were selling very fast. We had less than a day to figure out the market and find a home. We were very lucky to meet Thomas March. He was our guy - in one weekend he took us all over the place. We found a home in Folsom and bought it. Thomas was instrumental in helping us find a home because he knew the market and was able to execute a deal in a short amount of time.""To find the right home was imperative, as the move from Syracuse to Sacramento was a huge task. My wife and I had a large home filled with many things we have collected over the years, so the move would not have been easy without the help of Thomas March. After a year at our home in Folsom, we decided we wanted to move into a bigger home. The first person we thought to call was Thomas March because he did such a great job the first time. We were truly amazed by how he was able to help us.""The market has come a long way since 2004, homes aren't selling now like they were then. The prices, while they have come back quite a bit, are still tough for sellers. In order to sell in the market we sold in, we had to do all the right things in order to achieve our selling goals in a short period of time. Thomas March was fantastic - he had the right marketing plan, was very knowledgeable about the market, understood the key pricing concepts, and had the sophistication to figure out what the market was willing to bare and act quickly.""I'm very business driven. I didn't want to waste my time looking at the wrong people, chasing the wrong things, and being promised things that will never be delivered. I told him what I wanted from my home sale and what I was willing to do to make it happen. I found Thomas March to be very honest and sincere about his effort. He staged our home to make it look stunning and helped us accomplish our selling goals.""We had a very professional experience in an industry that is not always professional. We were very pleased - you don't see people use the same Realtor® twice very often, but we did. If I had to use someone a third or fourth time, I would call Thomas March!"Sanjay isn't the first person we've helped accomplish their buying and selling goals, and he won't be the last. If you want a professional experience with an agent you can trust to get the job done for you, give us a call! We would love to help you make the most of your real estate experience!
