Barrs Court Engineering has recently invested in a new DN Solutions' DNM 6700 vertical machining centre from Mills CNC to increase its in-house milling capacity and capability. The Hertfordshire precision subcontract specialist has acquired a DN Solutions' Siemens 828D controlled DNM 6700 at the company's 11,500sq/ft facility in Rotherwas in June 2024. It is being used to machine complex parts in low volumes for a range of customers in the marine, renewables, nuclear, steam, automotive and yellow goods sectors. The DNM 6700 is also being used to finish machine fabricated parts prior to assembly. Barrs Court Engineering, established in 1983, regularly invests in new, advanced machine tools as part of a rolling, company-wide continuous improvement programme to increase productivity, performance and process efficiencies across all of its machining operations, and is no stranger to technologies supplied by Mills CNC. In 2001, Barrs Court Engineering invested in its first Doosan lathe, a Puma 300 and it has also acquired a sub-spindle, Y-axis turning centre from Mills CNC to strengthen its in-house turning capacity and capabilities. The DNM 6700 is, however, the first milling machine the company has acquired from Mills in its 41-year history. Almost 12 months ago, Barrs Court Engineering began a strategic process of rationalising and streamlining its business by creating three discrete machining areas in its machine shop - each one focused on a specific production model designed to meet different customers' machining needs and requirements. Explains Toby Kinnaird, Barrs Court Engineering's managing director: “The new manufacturing strategy is focused on growth, and has imposed a discipline across all our planning and production operations. We analysed our existing business, including what our customers expected and demanded from us and identified three different production ‘models' which would direct how we would organise our machine shop and manufacturing operations.” Barrs Court Engineering has at its disposal several dedicated machine tools with integrated automation for its low mix high-volume manufacturing operation which is predictable and is characterised by ‘scheduled' repeat business. Manufacturing bespoke, high-quality components in small batches has always been a particular strength of Barrs Court Engineering, and is perceived as a high growth area for the company. Often requiring a ‘turnkey' approach with machined parts characterised by their high precision, complexity and long cycle times, the company specifically acquired the new DNM 6700 machining centre to strengthen its performance in this high-value production area. “To increase our high-mix low volume machining capacity, we decided to invest in a new high-performance machining centre to replace two of our older machines that had limited capacity”, remembers Toby Kinnaird. “We were particularly looking for a machine with a larger X-axis to handle bigger parts which had been out of our reach.” Barrs Court Engineering compiled a ‘must have' technical checklist for its future machining centre investment and visited the MACH 2024 Show in April to identify a suitable machine. Continues Toby Kinnaird: “We visited Mills CNC's stand on the first day of the show, and discussed our requirements with their sales staff. They provided details on the DNM 6700 that was in stock at their Leamington facility and would be available for immediate delivery. After a short while negotiating the deal, we placed the order for the machine later that week.” The model acquired by Barrs Court Engineering is equipped with the 828D Siemens control with ShopMill software and features an 18.5kW directly-coupled spindle, a 1500mm x 670mm worktable and a 40-tool position ATC. Says Toby Kinnaird: “Our new DNM 6700 is powerful, fast, accurate and flexible. The Siemens Control is intuitive and easy to use, making programming and job setups quicker and more accurate. The integration of the 4th-axis table enables us to machine complex parts with intricate features in a single setup, avoiding the time and cost involved in re-fixturing operations and the potential for losing accuracy, and the inclusion of Renishaw workpieces and tool probes improves process efficiencies.
A leading mechanical and fluid power transmission specialist has traded in a twelve-year-old Doosan vertical turning lathe for a new DN Solutions model to increase its in-house machining capacity and capabilities. Mills CNC, the distributor of DN Solutions' machines has recently supplied Surrey-based jbj Techniques Ltd with a new, FANUC-controlled vertical turning lathe. Celebrating its 50th year in business, jbj Techniques is a family-owned business that currently employs 25 staff in Redhill. As for the DN Solutions' 24” chuck Puma V8300M, it was installed at the company's 7200sq/ft facility in January 2024 and has replaced an older Doosan VT750M vertical lathe. The new machine, with its compact footprint and box guideway construction, is equipped with a powerful, high-torque 30kW 2000rpm 3153Nm spindle making it ideal for machining hard and difficult-to-machine materials. The V8300M also has driven tooling capabilities with an 18.5kW 4,000rpm spindle that increases flexibility, enabling complex parts to be machined in one set-up. Furthermore, the integration of a 12-tool position side-mounted ATC in addition to its existing 12-tool station turret, increases productivity by reducing downtime caused by tool changes. The Works Director at jbj Techniques, Mr Ben Stubberfield says: “Our new V8300M is has significantly improved our in-house vertical turning capacity and capabilities. The new machine has replaced a previously-acquired VT750M vertical lathe which, although being a good machine that had served us well over the last 12 years, didn't have a big enough turning diameter to machine some of our larger components. This resulted in us having to use an older, and much slower, lathe for these applications which, on occasion, affected our process efficiencies.” With its reputation built on quality, service and speed of response, jbj Techniques decided to replace the VT750M with a new larger VTL. As Ben Stubberfield continues: “We approached Mills CNC with our requirements and were introduced to the new DN Solutions' V8300 series. As well as having a bigger work envelope than the VT750M, it also featured the additional side-mounted ATC and the advanced FANUC 0iTP control.” As a consequence, the company invested in a new, compact Puma V8300M – a machine with live tooling that, despite its small footprint, boasts an 830mm turning diameter and 690mm turning height. Since being installed the V8300M has been put through its paces, machining a diverse range of components made from an equally varied range of materials that include stainless, super duplex, carbon and alloy steels and cast iron. Component cycle times can often be long, depending on the specific application. Discussing the company, jbj Techniques Managing Director, Mike Davis says: “Everything we do is geared towards helping customers optimise their processes. From working in partnership with them to design and developing new mechanical power and/or fluid power systems and solutions to supplying replacement parts for existing systems – our focus is on helping manufacturers reduce downtime, improve safety and sustainability, and maintain productivity levels.” Jbj Techniques' customer base and user profile are large and diverse. Its products and solutions are used extensively in the power generation, oil and gas, renewables, motorsport, food and beverage, transport, environmental, materials handling and marine sectors. Wherever mechanical power and fluid power transmission systems are employed, there is a good chance that jbj Techniques' products, services and solutions have been implemented. Jbj Techniques' machine shop, comprising seven CNC machine tools and a range of manual machines and equipment, is a vital and integral element of the company's service offering and one that helps differentiate it from its competitors. The latest DN Solutions' V8300M VTL has significantly increased machine shop capabilities and has also helped it improve its ability to respond quickly to customers' requirements for large and complex high-quality machined components.

At the Röhm GmbH plant in Sontheim Germany, 750 employees manufacture technology-oriented solutions for the automotive industry, mechanical engineering and aerospace sectors in a 41,000sq/m facility. The parts in question are finished on Kellenberger Premium grinding machines. The company's portfolio fits perfectly with the existing business areas of Rothenberger Holding, which generates a sales volume of €1.3billion with over 100 operating companies, many of them in the machine tool sector. Applying an extensive restructuring project, an investment sum of several million Euros was made available, which flowed into new machinery and systems. The aim for the future was to produce Röhm‘s high-tech products with even better quality and at the same time more cost-effectively. For division manager Alexander Scheitenberger and his 35 staff members, the investment came exactly at the right time. Scheitenberger‘s department manufactures tool clamping systems, 40% of which are customised special designs. A trained industrial mechanic, Scheitenberger has been with Röhm since 1990 and is very familiar with all machining processes and the Röhm portfolio, which includes drill chucks, centre punches, lathe chucks and vices, robot gripping technology, power chucks, clamping cylinders, mandrels and tool clamping systems. The parts were machined on a KEL-VARIA universal grinding machine with a centre width of 1m, which had been in use for 18 years. With spare parts for key components no longer available, making a replacement investment became unavoidable. Scheitenberger and head of production Erhard Bader agreed, that the new machine should again be a KELLENBERGER. “We have had a very good experience with the KEL-VARIA. The reliability, accuracy and process safety of the machine over the runtime were outstanding. In addition, the cooperation with KELLENBERGER has always been characterised by a high level of professionalism. Erich Ziegler, the KELLENBERGER area manager who is responsible for us, gave us excellent advice on the new procurement.” Since 2018, the KELLENBERGER product portfolio has offered two machine designs, which can meet the machining tasks at Röhm. The new KELLENBERGER 100 platform concept proved to be the best solution, especially as Swiss manufacturer Wenger had specially adapted automation to the machine. The task assigned to the engineers in St. Gallen, Switzerland, regarding the KELLENBERGER 100 was to develop a platform on which different machine concepts could be realised with a strong customer orientation. The segment of high-performance, low-cost grinding machines within the group was integrated into the concept. The modular solution on a common platform and a new assembly concept to reduce throughput time enable cost-efficient production of the machine and thus a very good price/performance ratio. The KELLENBERGER 100 offers the widest range of standard configurations for a variety of grinding operations. The machine is available in centre widths of 1,000/600mm and a centre height of 200mm and is designed for part weights of up to 150kg. A higher drive power for the grinding wheel (11,5kW) ensures increased productivity, while the newly designed guide in the Z-axis brings greater profile accuracy. For higher accuracy in non-circular grinding, the C-axis is equipped with a direct drive. Röhm opted for a machine with a centre width of 1m. The K100 has a compact, collision-free tandem grinding head with motor spindles. Ten grinding head variants are available for the optimised design of the machine concerning the machined parts. The reinforced casing allows the largest grinding wheel diameters for internal grinding up to 125mm. The user-friendly, ergonomic design of the KELLENBERGER 100 machine is complemented by intuitive operator guidance via touch screen interface. The machines are equipped with a state-of-the-art FANUC 31i CNC control with a 19” touch screen. Various ready-made software packages are included as standard or can be added as an option. They cover simple workpieces, complex workpieces in the shortest machining time, and complex contours and profiles. Swiss automation specialist Wenger has custom-designed the loading solution WeFlex for chucks and shaft parts, especially for the K100. The WeFlex loader enables automated processing of shaft parts from Ø6 to 100mm with a length from 20 to 600mm with a maximum gripper diameter of 80mm with workpiece weights up to 5kg in alternating mode and 15kg in single part mode. Interchangeable gripper heads facilitate quick changeover between the shaft and chuck parts. In the stacking module, 8 pallet spaces of size 400 by 600mm are available. Inserts for shaft or chuck parts can be inserted in the pallet frames. The machine is loaded via telescopic line gantry and an automatic hatch closes off the machine room during machining to ensure the thermal stability of the machine. Directly at the infeed, electricity and compressed air are recorded, which allows the energy consumption of the WeFlex to be recorded and visualised. To reduce energy consumption, the speed of the WeFlex is automatically adjusted to the cycle time of the processing machine. An image-guided setup wizard assists the operator when changing over to a new workpiece. Wenger Managing Director Michael Wenger supervised the initial commissioning, which was followed by training for the Röhm employees at KELLENBERGER. One week after machine commissioning, the 3-shift operation was resumed. “The reliability of the loader works is very high and we haven't had any downtime so far,“ reports Alexander Scheitenberger. The service package also includes remote maintenance of the machine and minor service work is handled internally at Röhm. “A couple of our employees have undergone service training with a focus on the new machine, so they can carry out minor repairs themselves,“ says Scheitenberger. “There is no need to call the KELLENBERGER service team for a minor issue. But if you do need the service, it's fast and reliable.” The conclusions of Alexander Scheitenberger and his colleagues are very positive: “In terms of accuracy, the new machine has brought us a quantum leap. Today, we grind with an accuracy of 2 microns with process reliability. The surface quality of the machined tool clamp is so good that, with the same polishing times, the results are many times better, from Ra 0.3-0.4 microns to below Ra 0.1. Due to the larger grinding wheel and because the new machine is simply faster than the old one, we have a 25% increase in productivity. In addition, personnel costs are 30% lower as the automation ensures that one operator is sufficient for two machines.”

Measuring Heat pump system design with Brendon from HeacolLink to slides for the test can be found hereTHE TEST RIGBrendon discusses how he first designed the test rig with Ulster University for testing the heat pump he had built which is specifically adapted for UK climate, the UK's building stock and how the homes in the UK are commonly heated e.g. a combi boiler. When RHI was first introduced, it required heat pumps to have costly certification and sadly Brendon's heat pump had to be put on the back burner... after all, Brendon is extremely busy installing heat pumps for people and has been putting heat pumps in for many years. (Note, if you are an investor in innovation you'd do well to contact Brendon to discuss this heat pump)The test rig uses a 500L thermal store to simulate the internal of a property "it's got inertia, it's got thermal capacity and it's got buffer " A plate heat exchanger connecting the thermal store to the heat pump simulates a radiator system which can have temps and flow rates changed. Brendon describes how this set up is able to run different testing than the excellent Energy House at Salford University and benefit from quick responses to different heating stratagies and scenarios. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday the 11th of November 2022 Last week was a mixed bag in terms of space weather. Yes, the solar flux index increased to 138 by Thursday the 10th, but at the same time, we had a fast solar wind and a solar flare from active region AR 3141 to contend with. The Kp index hit five on Monday the 7th after a prolonged period with the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field pointing south. When the Bz points south it more easily couples with the Earth's magnetic field, allowing solar plasma to flood in. The Bz component of the IMF then shifted north, which helped conditions improve over the week. In fact, the Kp index was down to zero for the latter half of Wednesday and Thursday. With no coronal holes, this was about as good as it could get for HF and the bands didn't disappoint. The MUF over a 3,000km path reached 38MHz around lunchtime on Thursday. DX worked from the UK including A35GC in Tonga, 7X3WPL in Algeria and P29RO in Papua New Guinea. The KQ2H 10m FM repeater on 29.620MHz is acting like a beacon this Autumn, often hitting S9 plus in the early afternoon. Running 1.5kW from the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, it is a good indicator of trans-Atlantic conditions. Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will decline a little, placing it in the region of 120. Geomagnetic conditions may remain settled, at least until the 18th when NOAA predicts the Kp index could rise to five. That said, it would only take a solar flare, and associated coronal mass ejection, from one of the large sunspots visible at the moment to spoil things. And now the VHF and up propagation news The main weather theme for this weekend is the very long moist airflow from the Azores to the UK and onwards to western Scandinavia. Because high pressure will be just to the east of the UK at first this will probably lead to some potentially long-range Tropo conditions from western Europe down to the Canaries and Spain/Portugal. A cold front will probably cut the Azores out of the best conditions. However, we should also be able to make use of good conditions into Europe and particularly across the North Sea to southern Scandinavia and perhaps parts of the Baltic. All this is fine until the next change-over to unsettled weather rolls in from the Atlantic on Monday night and during Tuesday. After then, it will be windy with rain or showers and a small chance of some fast-moving rain-scatter from heavy showers. The Leonids meteor shower peaks on Thursday the 17th, plus expect an encounter with a dust trail on November the 19th. It's predicted to occur at around 0600UTC with a short-lived high ZHR between 50 and 200, but activity level is uncertain. This is a good week to check out meteor scatter options and there have continued to be some occasional reminders that the solar conditions are capable of sending some higher Kp indices our way with an attendant chance of auroral conditions, so stay alert to the Kp index values. The Moon is at maximum declination so we have long Moon windows and zenith angles up to 65 degrees in the UK. Path losses are still low but with apogee today, path losses are at their highest. 144MHz sky noise is low all week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

GOVERNMENT ROAD INCIDENT STATS OUTThe 2021 road incident statistics have been released by the UK Government and in some places make grim reading. A positive is that cycling fatalities has dropped 21%, which we guess is due to a combination of people remembering how to drive again and cyclists getting used to the roads. The bad news is that road fatalities has risen 7%, with an astonishing 30% relating to not wearing a seatbelt. Click this Autocar link here for more information. NEW NEW CAR NEWSCitroën Oli -Citroën has revealed their design concept, the Oli, which is an investigation into sustainability and affordability. One of the key criteria is lightness, which has driven most of the design choices. The relatively small electric motor is good for around 247 miles, thanks to decisions on constraining the acceleration and top speed. We are big fans of clever stuff and this is very much in that bracket. Click the Autocar link here to read more. The Zem - A team of students from TU Eindhoven has produced a concept coupe that not only is sustainable but actually deploys technology that helps to clean up the air, by removing CO2. Admittedly, this one car removes two kilos of CO2 per 20,000 miles, but as an idea it is very clever. As with the Oli, we like this due to thinking around a problem and trying to produce a solution. Irish technology company evHACS has announced the launch of its innovative new charging system for electric vehicles (“EVs”) which it says will help to solve the challenge of charging solutions for electric-powered vehicle charging in the coming years. The company seeks to bring together three sectors: the electric vehicle charging ecosystem, the connected autonomous vehicle environment and the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. evHACS is an Irish Company supported by Enterprise Ireland. The amount of EV chargers required by 2030 is significant according to multiple sources. Ireland had 1,900 public EV chargers in 2021, this needs to increase to 30,000 by 2030 according to reports; the UK had 25,000 public EV chargers installed in 2021 and there needs to be 280,000 to 480,000 by 2030; the European Court of Auditors says there are 220,000 public chargers in Europe in 2020 which must grow to 1 million by 2025 and 3 million by 2030; EY, a consultancy, estimates that Europe will need 65 million chargers in total to fuel 130 million EV by 2035. Solution Is the charging industry capable of providing the number of chargers required? The jury is out. However, there is an industry which can help. evHACS? (short for electric vehicle charging heat pump air conditioning system) is a business with a patent-pending technology that uniquely combines electric car charging with heat pumps, air conditioners and refrigeration units. The technology seeks to contribute to lowering carbon home and commercial premises emissions by integrating two technologies thereby: lowering installation costs; lowering running costs; dynamically managing power consumption in the home; lowering CO² output and energy consumption The Heating, Ventilation Air Conditioning (“HVAC”) industry is expected to enter a period of exceptional growth over the next decade. The International Energy Agency (“IEA”) say they expect heat pump units installed globally to grow from 180 million units to a stock of over 600 million units by 2030. The stock of air conditioning units are also expected to increase from 2 billion units currently to almost 3 billion units by 2030. evHACS seeks to show that the heat pump (and air conditioning unit) is the perfect unit to house an EV charger. The HVAC industry will work with evHACS to ensure that a proportion of units have the technology on board. The HVAC industry has the capability to significantly ameliorate the supply of EV chargers to satisfy the growing demand globally: targeting 5% of new HVAC units offering the technology it represents in excess of 2.1 million heat pump units and 50 million air conditioning units by 2030. Ireland is targeting 600,000 domestic heat pumps installed by 2030. The UK will grow the installation of electric heat pumps from 30,000 per year currently to 600,000 per year by 2028. COP26 has continued the pressure on all Governments to reduce carbon output through to 2040. The war in Ukraine has also heightened the necessity to present to market solutions which will lower oil and natural gas dependency. Jeff Aherne, CEO evHACS says: “evHACS technology is simplicity at its best: integrating a charger into a HVAC unit saves on separate installations of both a charger and an air conditioning unit saving time, money and personnel. In domestic situations where a heat pump is increasingly proving popular over natural gas and oil, it makes sense to have a charger integrated into the unit.” A domestic charger uses around 7kW of power and a heat pump uses up to 5kW depending on its size. A house typically has 12 to 16kW of power, so having both the heat pump and the charger running concurrently risks tripping the main breaker if other appliances are also switched on. Other manufacturers of chargers use load balancing to reduce the charge to the vehicle in order to stop the tripping and circuit failure. evHACS also balances. However, it uniquely balances “both” the heat pump and the charger introducing a fle...

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 8th August. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. GENESIS' FIRST LUXURY EV 'G80' TOPS SALES RANKINGS - Genesis' first electric vehicle (EV) G80 has sold more than 2,000 units, emerging as the best-selling model in the domestic luxury EV market, which has been dominated by imported brands. - The electrified G80 model was released on July 7 and exceeded 2,000 units in orders in three weeks. - It can run up to 427 kilometers per charge with a high-voltage battery of 87.2kWh. It can charge up to 80 percent of its battery capacity within 22 minutes when charged with a 350kW super-fast charger. A combined maximum output of 272 kW (approx. 370PS) and a combined maximum torque of 700 Nm (71.4 kgf•m) enables the G80 EV model to reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds from a standstill. Original Source : http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=73630 - The Electrified G80 also makes it possible to use 220V electric appliances outside the vehicle conveniently with the V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) feature. A German manager of the electric car manufacturer made this public on his LinkedIn channel. The official start of deliveries is still scheduled for September, but it looks like the first deliveries could take place in August. - The Tesla Model Y can be ordered in Germany since the beginning of July. The market launch of the Model Y in Europe is earlier than last stated on Tesla's website, but later than originally planned. - The first ship has now apparently docked. Daniel Riek, Tesla's Senior Key Account Manager in Munich, announced on his LinkedIn profile that the Model Y has arrived in Europe - Tesla has invited journalists to its showroom in Berlin on 19 August. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/08/09/first-tesla-model-y-units-arrive-in-europe/ TESLA QUIETLY DELAYS CYBERTRUCK TO 2022 - Tesla has quietly pushed the release of the electric pickup to next year on its configuration page, telling you that you'll get to customize your truck when "production nears in 2022." This applies regardless of model — Tesla had already warned that single-motor trucks would arrive later, but that now applies to the dual- and tri-motor machines. - That could pose a competitive challenge for Tesla. GMC's Hummer EV is now poised to beat the Cybertruck to market barring delays. Even with setbacks, Rivian is still due to release its R1T truck in September. And while Ford's F-150 Lightning isn't due until spring 2022, the Cybertruck may have lost its first-mover advantage. One way to simplify and speed up the charging process could be to to it completely wirelessly and this company says it could deliver systems that could charge the Semi at 500 kW or even 1 MW without any physical connection. - WAVE stands for Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification and in a recent press release, it announced that it was developing wireless charging for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. - he plan is to have a big primary coil embedded into the road which could send power to a plate that can be up to 10 inches or 25 centimeters away. WAVE explains that - The current state-of-the-art drayage truck charging features primarily conductive chargers. The recently announced Tesla Semi concept design has the largest advertised range of 500 miles with a target 80% charge in 30 minutes. The battery pack is estimated to be at least 800 kWh (likely much higher to cover full load and all conditions) and must have a target charge rate of at approximately 1.5 MW. The system under development via the US DOE contract of charging an electric drayage truck at extreme fast-charging power levels will be the fastest charger by a significant margin. As the chances of big spending on EV incentives and green energy in the bipartisan infrastructure package are looking increasingly grim, there's a bright spot in EV incentives: a separate bill that would establish a national EV tax credit for used EV purchases. - the "Affordable EVs for Working Families Act," the bill would create a tax rebate of up to $2,500 for used electric cars. The credit would only apply to used cars that are at least two years old and cost less than $25,000, and be structured for EVs and PHEVs much like the existing EV tax credit. - People would only be allowed one credit per three year period Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1133110_legislators-propose-2-500-federal-tax-credit-for-used-evs KANSAS CITY STREETLIGHT-MOUNTED EV CHARGER PILOT AIMS FOR EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY - A new pilot project to install electric vehicle chargers on light poles in Kansas City, Missouri, could reduce one of the most commonly cited barriers to greater electric vehicle adoption: The lack of accessible charging infrastructure. - according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2019 American Housing Survey, more than one-third of U.S. homeowners — and nearly two-thirds of renters — do not have a garage or carport, which creates a significant barrier to at-home EV charging. - he lack of access to garages and public EV charging is especially apparent in low-income communities and communities of color. - Partners analyzed which streetlights can technically support curbside charging based on factors like voltage, control mechanisms and proximity to the curb. Plus, some streetlights in Kansas City only carry power at night and would therefore need upgrades to enable daytime charging. This is then fed to a stricken EV using either a Type 1 or Type 2 connection that is compatible with a claimed 99 per cent of electric cars. - these chargers launched with a modest 3.5kW power delivery, topping up EV batteries by approximately 14 miles per hour. - work is also underway on a 7.5kW mobile charger. - The AA introduced a ‘freewheeling hub' in early 2021. This attaches to the broken-down vehicle and allows it to be towed without its wheels touching the road and rotating. NORWAY MARKS 13,184 EVS SOLD DURING JUNE - In Norway, 13,184 new electric cars were registered in June. The share of electric cars in new passenger car registrations was 64.6 per cent last month. Norway's most successful model across all drive types in June was the Tesla Model 3 with 3,196 new registrations. - The first half of the year, a total of 48,059 new electric cars were put on the road, which corresponds to a market share of 57.3 per cent, according to a statement by the Norwegian Road Information Agency (OFV). In the same period last year, a total of 28,503 purely electric passenger cars were newly registered – a share of 48.1 per cent. - 81.7 per cent of all new passenger cars in Norway from January to June had an external charging connection - The stock of pure e-cars in Norway is approaching the 400,000 mark and reaches a share of 13.56 per cent. If plug-in hybrids are included, the stock of plug-in cars in Norway now stands at 544,106 and a share of more than 19 per cent. China was overtaken by Europe last year as the latter's NEV industry boomed, surging to 44 percent of the total market and beating China's 41 percent - for the full year of 2021, China's global share is estimated to remain above 45 percent - The estimate is based on the premise that China's NEV sales could reach 2.4 million units this year, which the CPCA forecast earlier. - In the segment of pure battery electric vehicles, China probably held a 57 percent global share so far this year, much higher than Europe's 27 percent and North America's 15 percent Original Source : https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202107/1227762.shtml BMW I4 HAS TWICE AS MANY PRE-ORDERS AS IX IN THE UNITED STATES - Even though crossovers and SUVs (electric or otherwise) are going up in popularity around the world, to the detriment of traditional body styles such as the sedan or hatch, it looks like the new BMW i4 is proving more popular than the iX SUV. According to i4Talk.com, the i4 had already racked up some 2,095 reservations in the United States earlier this week, while the iX had not even reached 1,000 orders (952, according to the source). - One factor that will boost the i4's popularity has to be its lower price compared to the iX, which was designed specifically as an electric vehicle. The iX starts at $83,200 in America, but you can easily exceed $100,000, if you opt for the more powerful variant and add some options. In Europe, specifically in Germany, the iX kicks off at €77,300, but if you want the more powerful variant, that starts at just under €100,000 and once you start adding options, it quickly goes north. The main factor for many maybe that's it's rare to impossible to get ‘free' energy when you've just got batteries. Yes negative or really cheap happens if you have the right tariff, occasionally, but with solar, large chunks of a day are free on a regular basis and even on a gloomy day, you can still produce enough to cover a house ‘on standby'. Match that with 4 hours of cheap electricity overnight as standard on our tariff (5p/kWh), when our PHEV and EV can be charged if it hadn't been sunny, washing and dishwasher timed to go on, etc, and batteries become an expensive piece of ECO Bling. Add in smart home charging tech, like a Zappi, and why have an extra smaller battery put in when you have a larger one sat on the drive? And that's before vehicle-to-grid solutions. RAJEEV NARAYAN If I had to choose between storage and solar energy production, I would have to pick production, though I can see that if someone lived in an area with highly variable power pricing and the grid was fairly green, storage might be preferable. In my case, here in Texas, our grid is much more carbon intensive than it is in England, despite all our wind power, and my price per kWh does not vary with time of day. Which is why I have 17 kW of community and 8 kW of rooftop solar, which produces about 36,000 kWh a year and more than offsets the 46,000 miles of EV driving my wife and I do a year. WADE I have solar on the roof at home and at work… I have 100 % net metering and 2 electric cars… We drive totally on the power of the sun with no bill for electric… With the net metering the grid is my battery. So I am not shuffling power having only a battery. I am net Zero with the solar. I would hands down vote for the solar STEPHEN TROYER I choose solar panels, that way I can know that I'm passively adding more clean energy to the grid. And I imagine that solar AC is a big plus. More sunlight, more energy for the AC. RENE SCHNEIDER I have 15.6kW solar panels since last autumn. And I have no stationary battery. But I have two big batteries, one in the Tesla and one in the Peugeot 208. And the solarmanager, www.solarmanager.ch, a tiny, very reasonably priced computer, loading only when there is sun. Or low tariffs. I'd clearly go for solar instead of battery ALAN NORTHCUTT, WACO i believe rooftop solar and home batteries are both important. however, if one had to chose one because of cost, i would recommend rooftop solar first. this will contribute clean electricity to the grid, which is our top priority. battery storage is also useful, but in homes these are usually only used during power outages. you talk about how the UK power never goes down. this reliability also relates to country. the US has more hurricane hits than any country, and my state of Texas is in the top five of US states that are hit. so the point is: battery back up for black outs ARE useful in many parts of the world. And i disagree on one point: you stated that if you are producing more electricity during the day than you need, that excess is "wasted." not at all: that is clean electricity that goes onto the grid--great for the climate crisis. PAUL DENNEY I have solar and I use it to charge my 75kwh Tesla so if it would only let me get the Lecky back out of it I wouldn't need another battery. Come on Elon sort it out #V2G RON BARBER, SAN JOSE Without a doubt I would install solar over batteries in almost any situation. The one exception I can think of is if I lived in an area with inconsistent power Like a mountainous region where powerlines can be dropped for an extended period of time then the battery solution would accomplish not only peak rate shaving but a peace of mind. I purchased a 4.5kW solar solution in October 2012 and have now generated just over 50 MW of energy with greatly reduced energy bills. The system has no more than paid for itself. JASON HORSMAN, FRESNO Environmentally speaking, solar is the way to go. Batteries for homes can never really scale to the costs without significant improvement. Even if your solar is going back into the grid, that is clean energy your providing for your neighborhood that might not have solar (yet..). Now I do love the idea of at some point in the future all of our cars being two directional so that if there was a need in the power grid or a power outage electric cars could provide a much needed boost to the grid MARIO CABALLERO Depends on your interconnection rules. Here in New Jersey, US, we don't have time-of-use rates and we get a 1:1 net metering benefit. Battery would not make financial sense unless you are looking for backup power during outages (we rarely lose power). So it is solar panels for me. The grid is my big battery

TESLA WILL HAVE TO SHIP ITS TEXAS-BUILT CARS OUT OF STATE TO SELL BACK TO RESIDENTS"This year, the Legislature convened Jan. 12 and will wrap up its work on May 31 before breaking until 2023. And it will do so without making a widely expected change to Texas’ auto dealer franchise laws that would finally allow Tesla to sell its cars—many of which will be built at its new Austin factory next year—directly to the public in the nation’s second-largest state." writes The Drive: "esla is on the verge of having to jump through the most ridiculous one yet: having to ship its Texas-built vehicles out of the state before it can sell (and ship) them back to Lone Star buyers. There’s not enough time left in the current legislative section to advance the bill that was supposed to avert that Kafkaesque outcome. This is going to happen unless Texas Governor Greg Abbott calls a special session specifically to debate this topic—extremely unlikely—or some arcane regulatory exemption can be crafted for Tesla in the months ahead. So how did we end up here?" https://www.thedrive.com/tech/40779/tesla-will-have-to-ship-its-texas-built-cars-out-of-state-to-sell-back-to-residents TESLA CASHING IN ON CHIPS"Trust Tesla and its chief Elon Musk to come up with a big idea for solving the current chip shortage. This one would only help Tesla itself — it is considering buying and operating a plant of its own, according to people familiar with the matter" writes the FT: "A cutting-edge semiconductor fab requires investment of up to $20bn and the intricacies of operating such plants are notoriously hard to master. Tesla is also pursuing a more practical idea of paying in advance to secure supplies. More than 470,000 customers were affected, particularly as the explosion caused a cascading impact on the Queensland grid." says Teslarati: "This was when the Hornsdale Power Reserve, a massive Tesla Powerpack battery farm, stepped in. With its upgraded toolkit that was added when it was expanded into a 150MW/194MWh system, the massive battery was able to immediately respond to the widespread power interruptions." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-powerpack-battery-coal-plant-explosion-australia/ TESLA HAS INSTALLED OVER 200,000 POWERWALL HOME BATTERIES"Despite issues with its Solar Roof, Tesla's Powerwall has apparently been a hot-selling item over the last year. The company announced on Twitter that it has sold over 200,000 Powerwall units so far, around double the number it said it had sold at this time in 2020. " according to Engadget: "It could apparently be shipping even larger numbers if it could manufacture more of them. Tesla recently said during its first-quarter earnings call that it had a "multi-quarter backlog on Powerwall." It also announced in April that it would no longer sell its Solar Roof panels without a Powerwall unit, which ought to boost demand even further. What’s it all about? Flow batteries have had their technical and commercial challenges over the years, so it’s good to see that the technology is really starting to get traction in that 6-12 hour storage category. It’s also good to hear a good traditional ‘started in my garage’ cleantech start-ups story, just watch for the EPA. This week I talk to Craig Evans about scaling a the flow battery technology and company of ESS Inc. About Craig Evans: Craig Evans is the President and CEO, and a founder of ESS Inc. Having started ESS from his garage in 2011, he led the company to the commercialization of the Iron Flow Battery system in 2016. Prior to ESS, Craig was the Director of Design & Product Development at ClearEdge Power Inc. His team designed the ClearEdge5, a 5kW combine-heat-and-power fuel cell system, which was successfully commercialized in 2010. This product received both CSA International certification in North America and KNREC certification in Asia. Craig began his career at United Technologies Corporation (UTC) where he held technical leadership positions in their Fuel Cell business and, prior to that, as a project engineer in the Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine business. In 2006, He was awarded the distinguished George Mead Award, the highest honor for individual engineering achievement at UTC. Craig Evans has authored over 15 patents and patent applications. He holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University, an MS in Finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A from Carnegie Mellon University. About ESS: ESS’s mission is to bring to market the cleanest, lowest-cost long-duration energy storage systems. Which are the catalyst for a sustainable energy future. Established in 2011, ESS Inc. manufactures low-cost, long-duration iron flow batteries for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications requiring 4+ hours of flexible energy capacity. Our long-duration energy storage platforms, the Energy Warehouse™ (EW) and Energy Center™(EC), use iron, salt, and water for the electrolyte, and deliver an environmentally safe, long-life energy storage solution for the world’s renewable energy infrastructure. Based in Wilsonville, Oregon, ESS Inc. was founded by a team with deep experience in fuel cells, electrochemistry, advanced material science and renewable energy. After five years of intensive innovation, engineering development and rigorous testing and validation, with the backing of ARPA-E and others, the company began shipping turnkey energy storage solutions that allowed companies and municipalities to control their own energy future in 2015. With its safe, earth-abundant, proven all-iron flow battery technology, ESS is helping project developers, utilities, and EPCs make the transition to more flexible non-lithium-ion storage that is better suited for the grid and the environment. HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 BREAKS COVER IN OFFICIAL SHOTS When we saw the retro inspired and very beautiful Hyundai Concept 45 there was little chance it would enter production. I mean, shag pile carpets and sliding barn door? But the reality, what's now called the Ioniq 5, isn't far off. The interior might not be the living room concept which resembles a plush lounge, but at least the exterior styling has kept much of the standout features of the concept car. "The new car, described by the brand as a “fundamental shift in BEV design approach”, will be fully revealed next month. It is the first production model to sit atop Hyundai and Kia’s new modular electric platform (E-GMP)." says Autocar: "New design elements include ‘Parametric Pixels’ (tiny pixel-style lighting elements that adorn the front of the car), a clamshell bonnet and 20in aero-optimised wheels. Technology found in the Ioniq 5 will include a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system offering a 3.5kW, 110/220v power supply via bidirectional charging - enough, Hyundai claims, to roast a turkey in a large oven. Ultra-fast charging promises to replenish up to 62 miles of range in as little as five minutes, too." Or 80% in 18minutes. The range is said to be just over 300 miles on WLTP. So although Hyundai won't talk battery sizes, say the efficiency was on average 4MpkWH (i could well be more), then 300 miles would need a 75kWh battery. And doing the math of the 80% charge in 18 minutes which they've told us, that would be able to get 60kWh of juice in that time. That would be 200kWh charging during that time. Which is incredibly fast, given the ramp down in speed you would expect after the battery is over half full, let alone 80%. But what about the claim of 62 miles (100km) in 5 mins? That would be a peak rate of 744 miles per hour. Or a peak rate of 248kW. it's an 800 volt architecture like the Taycan, which peaks at 270kW. Next up, a low slung sports sedan called the 6, and an SUV scheduled for 2024. E-GMP also accommodates a wide range of vehicle types, driving distances, and lifestyles through a standardized battery system equipped with technology optimized for EVs. E-GMP embraces unique EV design characteristics such as short overhangs and a long wheelbase collision safety, maximized passenger space, and battery safety. The space-consuming AC system has been moved from inside the car to the extra space created by replacing the engine with an electric motor leaving more room for passengers in the front. The 3 pin plug sockets will be up front, and under the back seat in the middle. Opposite where the rear USB ports would be on many cars, the rear of the armrest area. For the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Cadillac confirmed some details of the upcoming electric sedan, including all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and a four-quadrant glass roof." says Green Car Reports "The roof is made from suspended-particle-device smart glass, allowing each of the four occupants (the Celestiq won't have a middle rear seat) to set the level of transparency for their quadrant, a Cadillac press release said. Cadillac also said the Celestiq will have a "pillar-to-pillar freeform display" for the driver and front passenger, with individual screens for both passengers. Additional screen between the seats in the first and second rows "will separate individualized comfort settings from entertainment displays," the automaker said, implying that these screens will be used for controlling different features. The Celestiq is one of numerous electric cars based on General Motors' Ultium modular battery architecture and BEV3 platform. It's expected to have a fastback shape, and will be hand-assembled in Detroit. The same basic platform will be used for the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV, which is expected to arrive before the Celestiq, in 2022" The full width display is taking on the Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen system. And the Ultium battery packs will be made up to 200kWh for some models so the range should be impressive. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1130910_flagship-cadillac-celestiq-ev-will-offer-4-wheel-steering-4-quadrant-smart-glass-roof KIA ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED STILL WEARING THICK CAMOUFLAGE Kia is working on it's own full electric car from the ground up, and it has been seen again in lots of camo. "Kia is keeping the car under super-tight warps – it continues to wear thick cladding and camouflage. It only recently lost the swirly wrap underneath, though the bare metal isn't much to look at. The coverings cover the front and rear fascias, the rear hatch, and the doors, leaving a lot to one's imagination. The hatch design is further distorted with extra cladding." says Motor1.com: "The new EV will ride on Hyundai's Electric-Global Modular Platform . Horsepower and performance specs remain elusive, though expect it to be geared toward efficiency and not outright oomph." https://www.motor1.com/news/465783/new-kia-electric-crossover-spied/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news FOXCONN TEAMS UP WITH CHINESE AUTOMAKER GEELY "Foxconn and Chinese carmaker Geely have created a joint venture aimed at selling manufacturing and services to the global auto industry. The deal which was announced on Wednesday, marks Foxconn's continued expansion into the auto sector and reflects Geely's desire to partner with technology companies. Foxconn and Geely will provide car production, consulting, intelligent driving systems and other services to global automotive enterprises, the two companies said." writes CNBC: "Taiwanese firm Foxconn is best known as the company that assembles Apple's iPhones. Last year, it launched a platform to help automobile companies make electric cars. And this month, Foxconn signed a deal with Chinese electric carmaker Byton to help produce its first vehicle." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/13/foxconn-teams-up-with-chinas-geely-to-build-cars-for-other-automakers.html HITACHI CAPITAL INVESTS ANOTHER £10M IN GRIDSERVE "Hitachi Capital announced a £10m investment in Gridserve’s parent company, Gridserve Sustainable Energy Ltd. The firms say this is to strengthen their partnership following the successful launch of the UK’s first ultra-fast Electric Forecourt." accoring to electrive; "It is also not the first investment of Hitachi’s funding arm. The company has funded over £24m in Gridserve projects throughout 2020, including funding to help deliver the completion of the Braintree Electric Forecourt. The site is the first of over 100 large charging parks that Gridserve wants to install over the next five years. Robert Gordon, CEO of Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, added they wanted “to become a market leader for EV adoption”. Show #885 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 8th September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to two new Patrons. RAYMOND ROWLEDGE and MYLES HAMILTON are both new Executive Producers. It is Lucid Air week. Tomorrow, Wednesday, is the livestream unveil. VIDEO: ELON MUSK DRIVES VW ID.3 According to Handelsblatt last week “When Elon Musk’s private jet, the “Gulfstream G650”, took off from Berlin-Schönefeld Airport on Wednesday at 9:17 pm, everyone thought: The Tesla boss’s visit to Germany is over. But only 26 minutes later the plane landed at Braunschweig Airport. The reason for the stopover was a visit to VW boss Herbert Diess.” A VW official confirmed the meeting between the two CEOs, but they didn’t elaborate on the nature of it." But now we know - it was to drive the ID.3 alongside Chairman of the Board of VW Herbert Diess. Herbert Diess posted on LinkedIn this update: " "We are ready for take off!" In the comments under the footage he also said, "Thanks for the visit, Elon! Hope you like the video. It was great driving the ID.3 with you! You were just quite critical with the available torque at higher speed. I told you: "Yes, we are on the runway - but no need for take off - its not a sports car.” For this you should try our Porsche Taycan. Looking forward to our next meeting! " And here's the audio. The video has captions because it seems to be recorded on a shaly mobile phone with poor sound. Elon is driving, and Diess in the passenger seat. Herbert Diess took to Linked in later in the day on Monday to deny the speculation that the new execs had been thrashing out the idea of some for of collaboration between the two automakers.: "“Just to be clear: We just drove the ID.3 and had a chat - there is no deal/cooperation in the making.”" https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6708652868141907968/ TESLA LOOKING AT BECOMING AN ELECTRICITY PROVIDER IN GERMANY " Elon Musk appears to be opening a new front in the European battle for electric car supremacy: the power behind the wheel. Musk's Tesla has recently acquired a license that will enable the carmaker to trade electricity across Western Europe, and the company has also been surveying customers in Germany about potentially using Tesla electricity in their cars." says Autoblog: "It could also open the way for Tesla to use power stored by customers to help balance the electricity grid, an increasingly important service in Germany as it becomes ever more dependent on volatile wind and solar power." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/07/tesla-energy-industry-germany/ TESLA DEVELOPING AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST VIRTUAL POWER PROJECT The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has issued AUS$8.2 million in funding for the development of what is claimed to be the largest virtual power plant in the country. The funding will be used by Tesla Motors Australia to install battery energy storage and rooftop solar systems for 3,000 residential consumers in South Australia." says SmartEnergy.com: "Tesla will install 5kW of rooftop solar and a 13.5kWh Powerwall battery system at each property, at no cost to the tenant. The phase supports Tesla’s ambition to create the world’s largest virtual power plant comprising 50,000 solar and storage systems across residential and private dwellings. The 3000 additional systems will participate in AEMO’s virtual power plant (VPP) trial to provide a range of grid stability services by exporting excess energy to the National Electricity Market." Move beyond automotive, into how we power the planet. Scale - 180,000 cars in the first half of 2020, but that's about to explode From Tesla.com: "Autobidder provides independent power producers, utilities and capital partners the ability to autonomously monetize battery assets. Autobidder is a real-time trading and control platform that provides value-based asset management and portfolio optimization, enabling owners and operators to configure operational strategies that maximize revenue according to their business objectives and risk preferences" https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/finance-investment/tesla-developing-australias-largest-virtual-power-project/ https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/support/autobidder BMW MAY BE PLANNING ELECTRIC 3 SERIES "An electric version of BMW’s 7 and 5 Series has already been officially confirmed. According to a British media report, there will also be a BEV offshoot for the 3-series – but not for several years." according to Electrive: "According to information from Autocar, the electric 3-series is to be based on the BMW i4 and could adopt the model designation i3 when production of the current i3 comes to an end. The magazine refers to “sources that are familiar with the production plan”. According to BMW’s latest statement on the future of the current i3, the latter is to receive another battery update and “will continue to be built until 2024”. Also planned is a purely electric BMW i1, which will compete against the VW ID.3. For the X1, BMW had confirmed a battery-electric iX1 in July. If the i1 assumed by Autocar would be based on the well-known 1-series, BMW would then have announced 1-series, 3-series, 5-series and 7-series BEV versions of its core lineup." https://www.electrive.com/2020/09/07/bmw-may-be-planning-electric-3-series/ SK INNOVATION PUSHES FOR 3RD EV BATTERY PLANT IN HUNGARY "SK Innovation Co., a South Korean refining-to-battery conglomerate, is pushing for its third battery plant in Hungary, people familiar with the issue said Monday." according to Korea Herald: "SK Innovation has begun a process of selecting subcontractors for the construction of the proposed plant, they said. SK Innovation denied that the selection process has begun, saying no decision has been made in regard to the third Hungarian plant. Currently, SK Innovation runs a plant with an annual capacity of 7.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the northwestern Hungarian city of Komarom. SK Innovation has also been working to complete its second plant with a capacity of 9.8 GWh, next to the first plant, by 2022." http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200907000834 MG E-HS PLUG-IN HYBRID COMING NEXT YEAR "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is about to get some competition from China. The plug-in hybrid MG HS is still on track to touch down in Australia next year, with the promise of class-leading electric range" says CarExpedrt: "With a claimed electric range of 75km, the e-HS has the on-paper credentials to put the upcoming plug-in hybrid Ford Escape (50km) and Mitsubishi Outlander (50km) in the shade. How the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV set for reveal next year will compare isn’t clear, but a longer electric range than the current 50km is likely." https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/mg-e-hs-plug-in-hybrid-coming-next-year ZAP-PAY: NEW APP PROMISES SEAMLESS PAYMENT FOR EV CHARGING "Electric vehicle (EV) users will no longer have to shuffle between apps and cards to pay to charge on different networks, with the launch of a new service enabling them to do so from a single app." says Business Green "Zap-Pay launches today, with Engenie the first network available, followed by a wave of partners in the autumn including ESB EV Solutions, LiFe, and Hubsta. The new system was designed by Zap-Map, an app which drivers can currently use to locate chargers across the UK. Using Zap-Pay, EV drivers will be able to search, plan, and pay for their EV journeys all in one place, the firm said." https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4019748/zap-pay-app-promises-seamless-payment-ev-charging You can listen to all 884 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #741 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 7th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to PHILIP TRAUTMAN as a new PRODUCER of this here podcast. WHY DID AUDI REGISTER A1 ETRON Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt #Audi registered a small number of pure-electric A1 BEV models in March, suggesting an A1 badged BEV is likely on the way, or alternatively Audi are using it as a test mule for the #MEB based model soon to roll off @vwsachsen_de 's Zwickau line. In 2010 Audi did make the A1 e-tron, it was a protoype version of the A1 which had an electric motor driving the front wheels but a very small 12kWh battery pack. In the boot floor, where you would find the the BMW i3 range extender engine, Audi put a 245cc Wankel engine to generate electricity. Very similar to the current Nissan e-power cars. = In Feb of this year, Auto Express said: "Audi ready to expand its e-tron portfolio with a new all-electric supermini model, which will sit on the VW Group’s MEB platform. Audi is planning a huge expansion of its e-tron electric range over the next five years – and now a senior official at the firm has admitted to Auto Express that this wider range will stretch to a small car based on the VW Group’s entry-level EV platform. Known as MEB Entry, the architecture was revealed at the VW Group annual conference last spring. It’s designed to support vehicles of around four metres in length, about the same as a Polo or an Audi A1." But that was due to be 2022. MAZDA MX-30 WITH ROTARY ENGINE OFFICIALLY UNDER CONSIDERATION "The Mazda MX-30 electric crossover will be available in Europe in 2021, and it will possibly get a rotary engine as a range extender, according to a new announcement from the automaker." reports Motor1: "The version of the MX-30 coming at launch has an electric motor making 143 horsepower (106 kilowatts) and uses a relatively small 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery. This setup offers an estimated range of just 130 miles (209 kilometers). So far, there are no plans to bring the crossover EV to the United States, but it's hard to imagine the vehicle being competitive in the market with such a low range." https://www.motor1.com/news/408413/mazda-mx-30-rotary-engine/ TESLA MODEL 3 = 6TH BEST SELLING CAR IN USA "The Tesla Model 3 isn’t done with the headlines, despite the Model Y’s review-grabbing arrival and the coronavirus pandemic we’re dealing with at the moment. Tesla has climbed the rankings of the top selling cars in the USA and placed the Model 3 on the 6th rung*." reports CleanTechnica: "That’s up from 9th in 2019 as a whole, up from 13th in the 1st quarter of 2019, and up from 7th in the 4th quarter of 2019." Note: This is based on official figures from other automakers but an estimate for the Model 3. Tesla only reports global sales, without splitting them out by country or region, and has also started combining Model 3 and Model Y sales/deliveries. That said, CleanTechnica’s estimates are based on a variety of sources and data points. Camry, Corolla, Civic, Altima, Accord and Tesla Model 3. As for top vehicles, Ford F-Series, Silverado, Ram Pickup. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/05/tesla-model-3-6th-best-selling-car-in-usa/ UK EV REGISTRATIONS BREAK RECORDS “Registrations of electric vehicles have broken almost all records in March 2020" says Green Car Reports: "A combined figure of more than 18,500 is almost 6,000 units more than the previous record from September 2019. Pure-EVs reached their highest ever total, with almost 11,700 registered during the month. The previous record was a little over 7,700, also in September 2019. As might be expected with such a large increase on EV units registered, market share for pure-electric models hit a new record too." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8886/record-breaking-march-for-ev-industry/ VW SAYS THE COMBUSTION ENGINE IS FAR FROM DEAD "While some have rushed to announce the demise of the ICE is coming, the peeps from Wolfsburg don’t see it that way. In an interview with Autocar, technical chief Matthias Rabe explained why VW argues the traditional engine “will have a longer future than some people predict.” While synthetic fuels are still far from being massively produced for the automotive industry, he believes it makes sense to invest in e-fuels since EVs still have limitations in terms of range while their batteries are still large and heavy." according to Motor1: "Even though EVs will be the number one priority from now on, investments in combustion engines are still planned to update the vast array of gasoline and diesel powertrain VW sell across its many brands." https://www.motor1.com/news/408134/vw-combustion-engine-not-dead/ WATCH PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S BLOW PAST ITS TOP SPEED ON THE AUTOBAHN [audio] from Automann.tv in the Porsche Taycan Turbo S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0IAgkHpU54 KIA XCEED PHEV GOES ON SALE IN THE UK The addition of Plug-in Hybrid variants to the Kia XCeed marks the next step in Kia Motors’ vehicle electrification strategy. Now on sale in UK showrooms, the Kia XCeed PHEV represents the first time Kia has brought electrified powertrains to the Ceed family. The 8.9kWh battery pack is located alongside the 37-litre fuel tank beneath the rear bench, unlike many other plug-in hybrid vehicles, in which the battery pack takes up valuable cargo space. And a 44.5kW electric motor, The XCeed PHEV ‘3’ model is capable of travelling up to 36.6 miles on zero-emissions electric power, while the ‘First Edtion’ can travel up to 33.5 miles LONG RANGE RWD MODEL 3 OWNERS GET AUTOPILOT "Elon Musk has stated that owners of the now-discontinued Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive configuration will have the opportunity to purchase the company’s basic Autopilot in the future at a discounted price." says Teslarati: "Currently, owners of the Model 3 who purchased their vehicle before April 2019 did not have basic Autopilot included with the car. Owners of early build Model 3s were required to purchase basic Autopilot functions for $3,000. Tesla discontinued the production of the LR RWD Model 3 in June 2019. The LR RWD variant of the Model 3 offered a 325-mile EPA-estimated range rating along with a 4.9-second 0-60 MPH speed, just half a second slower than its sibling, the LR AWD variant. The car was a good option for those who wanted a vehicle that had a lot of range but did not need the all-wheel-drive capability." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-basic-autopilot-model-3-lr-rwd-price/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in? Show #692 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 9th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW RAMPS UP ELECTRIC CAR MOTOR OUTPUT AT BAVARIA PLANT "BMW said on Thursday it is increasing production of electric vehicle powertrain components at its plant in Dingolfing, Bavaria, and raising its staff numbers to 1,400 this year, from 600 at present." says Reuters: "Responding to tougher emissions rules and the threat of multi-million euro fines, carmakers are stepping up efforts to sell electric and hybrid cars. BMW aims for hybrid and electric cars to make up a quarter of new vehicle registrations by 2021. The number of employees assembling electric motors in Dingolfing will rise to 1,400 by the end of 2020, and is slated to grow to 2,000 over the mid-term, BMW added." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bmw-electric/bmw-raises-electric-car-components-capacity-at-bavarian-plant-idUSKBN2000Y0 VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER DEBUT PUSHED BACK "If you were eagerly awaiting Volkswagen to pull the veil off its ID 4 all-electric crossover, it appears you will have to wait a bit longer. Initially expected to debut at the New York auto show in mid-April, its reveal has now apparently been postponed and it may be shown at the Detroit auto show, in June of this year." says InsideEVs: "Autocar doesn’t make the Detroit reveal like a sure thing, though, so the car may be shown even closer to the end of 2020. We also don’t know if VW is going to reveal both the regular ID 4 and the coupe like ID 5 version at the same time - the latter is actually the model previewed by the ID Crozz concept. The ID.4 and ID.5 will also be the first Volkswagen models to bear the GTX electric vehicle performance badge, but the automaker will surely make a GTX version of the ID.3 and other models in the ID series (especially since the ID.3 is the EV equivalent of the Golf and GTX is more or less the EV equivalent of GTI)." https://insideevs.com/news/397413/vw-id4-debut-postponed-detroit/ TESLA SOARS IN GERMANY WITH MASSIVE 168% INCREASE IN REGISTRATIONS IN JANUARY "Tesla registrations in Germany increased by 168% in January, helped by strong demand for the Model 3" according to Teslarati: "Tesla leading the pack of imported vehicles is a good sign for Elon Musk’s electric car company. With the construction of Giga Berlin expected to set to start as early as mid-March, Tesla can only expect more organic demand when Germans and electric vehicle enthusiasts from nearby European countries see firsthand more of its vehicles on the road." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-sales-germany-january-2020/ TESLA CHINA TO START PRODUCTION IN GIGA SHANGHAI ON FEB. 10 ""esla plans to start production from its Giga Shanghai facility in China on Monday, Feb. 10. After the coronavirus outbreak, the Tesla factory in China shut down productions from Feb. 2." says International Business Times: " Tesla Vice President Tao Lin announced this week that the factory would resume productions on Feb. 10. However, the deliveries of Tesla cars would take a hit. On Saturday, the Shanghai government stated that it would consult the banks to give loans with manageable interest rates to small businesses and exempt companies in the hospitality sector from any value-added taxes, which is badly hit after the outbreak. Similar benefits are applicable to foreign firms." https://www.ibtimes.com/coronavirus-outbreak-tesla-china-start-production-giga-shanghai-feb-10-2918589 NIKOLA TRE TO BUILD ELECTRIC TRUCKS AT IVECO IN GERMANY "Iveco-owner CNH Industrial and Nikola Motor will build the Nikola Tre in battery-electric and fuel cell version at the Iveco plant in Ulm, Germany. The first e-trucks to go into production from 2021 are the battery-electric 4×2 and 6×2 vehicles. The fuel cell version is planned for 2023." says electrive: "The two partner companies have formed a joint venture called Nikola Tre – like the truck – which will manufacture the battery-electric model with a modular battery that can be configured to a capacity of up to 720 kWh. The electric drive has a maximum continuous output of 480 kW. Production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2021. The Nikola Tre, which was adapted for the European market, has little in common with the company’s US models shown so far; instead, it is based on Iveco’s popular S-Way platform." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/07/nikola-tre-to-be-built-in-ulm-germany/ SWITCHING TO AN ELECTRIC CAR COULD SAVE YOU £41,000 "DRIVERS could save more than £40,000 by switching to an electric car, a new investigation has revealed. It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnston announced that a ban on new petrol and diesel models would be introduced in 2035." writes The Sun: "Recent data from EDF Energy found Brits could save £41,000 in fuel over their lifetime by getting behind the wheel of an electric vehicle. Drivers on average spend more than £56,000 on filling up their car with petrol or diesel over the course of their lives. But if they drove an electric model, they would only spend around £15,000 over the same time period." https://www.thesun.co.uk/motors/10904797/switchin-electric-car-save-fuel-costs/ THE TAX BREAK THAT COULD SAVE YOU 40% ON AN ELECTRIC CAR "There is potentially, however, something of a financial game-changer for driving an electric car, which might save 32 per cent to 42 per cent of the monthly cost of getting behind the wheel. The key to this is salary sacrifice, the same system many employers use for pension contributions, cycle to work schemes, and childcare vouchers, allowing workers to effectively pay tax-free." says Simon at ThisIsMoney: "This saves you both national insurance and income tax, which for a basic rate taxpayer is 32 per cent and a higher rate taxpayer 42 per cent. But a special exemption was put in place for ultra-low emission vehicles to encourage motorists to swap their petrol and diesel cars for electric ones. This meant that the government theoretically had no problem with your employer allowing you to pay for an electric car from untaxed income through salary sacrifice. At the moment, the benefit-in-kind, or BiK rate, on a pure electric car is 16 per cent and the way that the maths works means much of the tax benefit of the salary sacrifice is eaten up by the charge. This changes in April though, when electric cars will have a zero BiK rate and salary sacrifice benefits can be felt in full. The monthly cost for a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus with no deposit down over 48 months could be roughly £530, but under salary sacrifice for a higher rate taxpayer it effectively costs 42 per cent less, or £307 of the wages they would normally see." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-7970367/The-electric-car-salary-sacrifice-tax-break-save-40.html WHICH EUROPEAN COUNTRY HAS THE MOST ELECTRIC CAR CHARGERS? # When looking at the number of fast charging points, the top 10 European countries were: Germany – 5,074 fast chargers United Kingdom – 4,008 fast chargers Norway – 3,426 fast chargers France – 1,975 fast chargers Spain – 1,242 fast chargers Netherlands – 1,069 fast chargers Sweden – 1,023 fast chargers Switzerland – 846 fast chargers Italy – 833 fast chargers Austria – 575 fast chargers https://www.carwow.co.uk/blog/best-driving-roads-for-electric-cars NATSO, CHARGEPOINT MAP OUT CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR 4,000 TRAVEL PLAZAS "ChargePoint, which has more than 108,000 electric vehicle charging stations, and NATSO, the trade association for truck stops and travel plazas, will collaborate to build out a network of 4,000 off-highway charging stations, including in rural America, by 2030." reports Frieghtwaves.com: "The two will use money from the Volkswagen “Dieselgate” emissions scandal settlement plus grants and plaza owner investment of up to $1 billion to knit the mostly direct current (DC) fast-charging network, which ChargePoint will manage. ChargePoint and NATSO will work together to identify public and private sources to support the build-out. The deadline is Feb. 26 to apply for Volkswagen Settlement Appendix D Funds, money set aside by the German automaker following its 2015 diesel emissions cheating admission." https://www.freightwaves.com/news/natso-chargepoint-map-out-charging-infrastructure-for-4000-travel-plazas EXCLUSIVE: FORD’S EV PRODUCT CHIEF REVEALS UPDATES ON MUSTANG MACH-E PROGRESS "Electrek met with Darren Palmer, the product chief for Ford EVs, to learn where things stand. Palmer said that the Mach-E is “close to sign-off” for vehicle engineering. And he confirmed that Ford will hit the 300-mile range target for the long-range version." says Electrek: "Palmer explained that customer focus groups revealed that EV buyers want a 300-mile version. Hitting that number, he said, is an important strategy for converting gas-car owners to electric. He confirmed that 80% of Mustang Mach-E pre-orders are for the long-range model, promising up to 300 miles. Of course, the lower-cost Mach-E versions, and those offering all-wheel-drive, will have between 210 and 270 miles. every Mach-E (and likely every Ford EV) will come with a portable, Level 2, 240-volt charger. It’s a strategy to eliminate the question about what home-charger to buy. Palmer also said that Ford’s test teams are currently taking long all-electric road trips to discover any issues about using highway charging. He said that any problems are documented and fed back to the company’s EV charging-network partners." https://electrek.co/2020/02/07/exclusive-fords-ev-product-chief-reveals-updates-on-mustang-mach-e-progress/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK MARTIN YOUNG The main reason I purchased a Chevy Volt was because it was time for me to replace an old worn out car, and I didn't want to replace it with old worn out technology in a new wrapper. I wanted something truly different...something that looked towards the future instead of the past. Yes, I was concerned about the environment, but on your scale of 1 to 10, I was at most a 5. And then something interesting happened. After driving the Volt for a few weeks, and no longer making trips to a gas station where I used to regularly inhale carcinogenic fumes, and noticing all the exhaust coming from other cars and realizing that my car wasn't constantly spewing toxins from its tailpipe, my concerns about the environment started to grow. So that now, after a year of driving mostly on electricity, on your scale of 1 to 10, I would say my concern for the environment is closer to 10. And this reveals a truth that we should never lose sight of: the easiest and most effective way to change a person's attitude is to first change a person's behavior. DOUG BUTCHER When I found out a few years ago about the terrible air quality in cities, I knew I would eventually go electric. However, it was only when I had a drive in a friend's Leaf that I actually decided to take the plunge. That experience was in September 2019, and I am now the proud owner of a 2016 Leaf. The environment is still a consideration but I'm mostly looking forward to the savings in my pocket now. MUNAVER I would love to own an EV mainly for the environmental reason and would give it a 10 out of 10 as the main reason to purchase one. Unfortunately I live in Australia where we have a limited range of cars available and no government support. PETER MOONEY I brought my EV for environmental reasons mostly. Specifically air quality. Running costs were a close second but I doubt I would have bothered changing it if I didn’t care about the toxic diesel fumes. JOHN HARCOMBE For me enviroment low 1 out of 10, I just wanted new tech of ev. My wife wanted mini, so when ev mini announced on your show we were both onboard and straight into dealer to put order in. Due April 2020. STUART JACKSON My decision to move to an EV is entirely motivated by environmental considerations. I use my car a lot for work and feel very guilty about the environmental damage (locally and globally) that it causes. JIM BAXTER Great show, for the question I would say 10 - the biggest reason I have an Hyundai Ioniq ev lease on order is the environmental issue. I already have a hybrid and because it is easy and fun to drive, I was going to replace it with a hybrid plug-in but 6 months ago I decided to choose an ev for the environment. MARK GARNETT Environmental reasons Was absolutely not my reason for going EV, so that’s a “one”. However my awareness and interest in environmental issues is now right up there. ASEER I do high mileage and feel that switching to EV does mean my emissions has an effect however I will say financially an EV for high mileage make more sense than any other solution and by reducing my toxic emissions helps too. PHIL KEMP I give that (in 2018) a 7; my wife reckons 8. Other factors included: - urgent need to replace aged ICE - need for something more restful to drive in my declining years - desire for something different; this is likely my last car buy JOHN FRUHWIRTH Wanting my dream car - 60% Wanting the best car on the used car market for $100k Canadian - 30% Wanting it to be environmentally friendly - 10% DARREN FINDLAY 9 out 10 Environmental impact of dino juiced propulsion was my primary reason for going EV – I also went veggie at the same time (2 years ago). That said, I love the tech too. TOM RAFTERY In my case, it was very definitely a 10. I moved to Spain in 2008 and needed to buy a new car. At the time my filter for cars was emissions. The best option available (with a young family and being a single car family) was a Toyota Prius. I’m the proud owner of a 40kWh Nissan Leaf (and a 5kW solar array). PETER BRYN Climate change is the absolute top of my list for being an EV enthusiast and buying my Volt. To solve climate change, we need to address coal, oil, and gas. Coal and gas are predominantly used in the power grid, where many alternatives exist - nuclear, wind, solar, and/or gas with carbon sequestration. So, cleaning the power grid isn’t so much a technical challenge as a political one. MARK RICHARDS Just heard your question of the week, and you asked about how much environment concerns entered into my decision to buy my Bolt and my Volt. I’d say, similar to you, it is on the list, but not a big part of it. I’d say 10%. First was how fun Bolt is to drive. Second is the technology, I am a nerd, so I love all things tech. Third was how much money it could save me (btw, after 1 year I saved $2,700 on gas and maintenance). Fourth was the quiet. And fifth was the environment. NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… I’m thinking of driving to Italy, 1028 miles and 17 hours. Channel Tunnel to France, skirt the bottom of Switzerland, northern Italy past Milan and onto Pisa. What’s the longest EV road trip you’ve done or WOULD you do? Fleet and company car drivers benefit from low company car tax rates. The zero-emission, all-new e-2008 SUV will be exempt from paying Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax from April 2020 onwards. The PEUGEOT e-2008 SUV is powered by a 100kW (136bhp) electric motor with a 50kWh battery. Under WLTP testing, the 100% electric, zero exhaust emissions, SUV provides 193 miles of range. DRIIVZ AND ENNET TO BRING SMART EV CHARGING SERVICES TO JAPAN Currently, EVs only account for 0.5% of all new cars sold in Japan. However, several Japanese automakers are preparing to launch electric models in the next couple of years which is expected to increase the adoption of EVs in the country. By integrating elements of Driivz’s EV charging management platform into its smart charging service, Ennet will be able to analyse the power usage patterns of its customers, identify when energy grids receive the least demand for charging and make sure fleets are sufficiently charged for use the following day. Functionality to remotely start and stop charging will also be enabled. LYFT IS INTRODUCING A FLEET OF 200 ELECTRIC KIAS IN COLORADO "Coloradans will be able to catch a ride in a sleek, new $40,000 electric Kia Niro as soon as December even though the vehicles aren’t available for sale in the state." says Colorado Sun: "That’s because Lyft is making a fleet of 200 of the long-range electric crossovers available for lease to its Colorado drivers. The ride-sharing company on Thursday rolled out the plan — its first attempt in the U.S. to make an electric-vehicle fleet available to its drivers — thanks to a law change earlier this year.Legislators opened up Colorado’s electric-vehicle tax credit program to rental companies and businesses with fleets in an attempt to attract a company like Lyft to put a mass of EVs on the roads. Lyft, which lobbied for the change, hopes laws will change in other states, too. " https://coloradosun.com/2019/11/14/kia-niro-lyft-colorado-fleet/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Damon Ireland Our key reason for owning an EV is not being beholden to the fuel companies to run our car. Here in New Zealand we are paying $2.20 for a litre of 91 octane petrol which which tends to jump up quickly whenever any overseas events affects the value of crude oil or our dollar. In contrast our electricity price has not changed in over 3 years Doug Vowles, Canada Hey Martyn – First off – last week my wife and I ordered our first electric car, the Tesla Model 3 SR+. Hoping to get it before the end of the year. Thank you for being part of the process in getting to that decision! QOW answer: ZERO EMISSIONS. I currently would not look at any car that wasn’t zero emissions. There are other requirements beyond that (like range) but much of it (0 – 60…) is just gravy. Don Miller I never run late for an appointment because I had to stop and get gas. (We charge each night so we leave home with 200 miles of range) Phil Kemp I'd vote instant torque as the biggest advantage. It's not only convenient but can be a life saver in a tight situation. James Penfold from EV Launchpad Martin, answer to question of the week: stomping on the “gas” pedal never gets old when you are running on guilt free, inexpensive renewable energy! Thanks for the awesome podcast. James Penfold Boston USA. Dafydd Cheung Genuinely, I’m more interested in EVs, because on the whole, they are less destructive to the only planet we have. May the sun shine on your panels. Adam DeVries I bought my car because it was electric. I hated going to gas stations. someone just asked me if I liked my car because it was electric or because it had autopilot. I can't decide if I would rather drive a car that was electric or one that had autopilot. I think I prefer the convenience of the electric vehicle getting to charge at home and work always having a full tank but it is a hard decision. ARON MCINNES Being able to plug in my garage and go every morning without worrying about filling up. I drive an average of 4500km a month, I fuel up a lot and the savings would be nice too. DAVE DEWSON from EVSMILES Number one thing with an EV.... way more smiles per mile! CORTEEN QOTW, my favourite feature is getting into a de-iced and pre warmed car in the winter, can’t beat driving past all your neighbours who are outside in the cold scraping their cars! MARTY YOUNG My "one thing" would be the acceleration. I'm a pilot, and I love when I push the throttle forward and feel the acceleration press me back into my seat and the speed increases until the wheels leave the ground! I get a similar feeling (minus the wheels leaving the ground!) in my 2016 Volt. SERVULUS BILLY You ask what's the one upside to driving an EV.... I give you the experience itself. ..... the stares on admiration, the thumbs up of approvals, the many questions of FUD I was able to defunct, the minds and thought processes I was able to change or at least open their eye and minds to something new, the comradery of the brand and last but not least the driving experience itself for which there was no comparison Øyvind Bjørkelund Best thing with my EV must be better fuel economy! TOM RAFTERY The one thing I love about driving my EV is that I am living in the future! I have a 5kW solar array on my roof which I use to charge the car – the lack of emissions, the zippiness of the car, the quiet ride all contribute to my awesome feeling of future living QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Welcome back to The Paleo View - episode 378. (0:40) Today Stacy and Sarah plan to talk about some current events. Stacy wanted to take a moment to thank the imperfect Skype for being there for 378 episodes. Before jumping in, Stacy shared a side tangent on a podcast Matt has taken to listening to with the boys, where they use the show to read funny reviews. Sarah shared some thoughts on the proper use of puns. This show is Stacy's fault. Sarah has a lot going on and is about to travel, so Stacy decided to take the reins. Stacy and Sarah are both going to share about what they have going on, and things that are going on in the world that is interesting and fun to explore. It is almost like rapid-fire, but The Paleo View style banter that is not at all fast. Sarah's Updates Sarah is leaving for San Francisco the morning after this episode is recorded, and by the time this show airs she will be back home. She will be giving a public lecture on the gut microbiome for Cider Health Care Systems Institute of Health and Healing. Sarah thinks she overcommitted with her travel itinerary this year. At the start of 2020, Sarah is also doing a three-day workshop in San Jose, CA in February. In the midst of this all, Sarah is still trying to wrap up her Gut Microbiome book. There are still some tickets left for the San Jose workshop, so if you are interested, you can purchase those here. This will be the last trip Sarah will plan for awhile. Eventually, when the book releases, there will be a book tour, with very limited stops. The next section of the AIP lecture series is coming up in March, but Sarah wants to make time for even more projects that excite her. Even though Sarah loves public speaking, it is not a smart use of her time right now. Stacy stressed the importance that we all need to prioritize the things that make us feel our best. It was a difficult decision for Sarah to make to not attend Paleo Fx in 2020. Sarah shared the way that she got crystal clear about her expectations and goals, and is aligning with those. For the first time in a long time, Sarah feels optimistic about the way she is structuring her time. Stacy feels like healthy living is all about constant reevaluations. It is a process of constant learning and evolution. Stacy's Updates For today's 'did you know' episode Stacy is going to share on a new bill for preventing greenwashing on personal care products. Stacy referred to this previous podcast episode when they discussed personal product care safety act. Stacy recently went to California for more training on this, as this is her full-time job. She specifically works with BeautyCounter, but she also works with a lot of other brands who are things safer. If you have any questions about all of that stuff, this is where Stacy has gone with her lifestyle and her expanding journey. If you want to try safer samples or anything, Stacy does offer those. Just send Stacy an email at stacy@realeverything.com and put in the subject, 'BeautyCounter sample'. Be sure to include details on what you are currently using and what your goals are. Stacy loves to troubleshoot with people both on skincare and lifestyle. Sarah and Stacy discussed their love for the Overnight Resurfacing Peel, which you can still get for free in the month of November. If you are loving BeautyCounter, there is a half-price enrollment special through the 17th. Sarah's birthday will be taking place when this show airs. In honor of her recent 8th blogiversary celebration, Sarah wrote a post about her personal journey as a blogger. Sarah reflected on the journey Stacy and Sarah have been on together since this podcast launched. They have both been able to find their voices in the community and the change they want to affect in the world. One of the things that amaze Sarah about Stacy's journey is that she has been able to channel her passion for healthy living in a way that impacts people whether they are Paleo or not. The work Stacy is doing is not just about BeautyCounter, it is about the regulations that go into personal care products. It has been a journey for Stacy. The Personal Care Product Industry Stacy does want to take a moment to discuss where the personal care industry is. People have this idea that natural is safe. Stacy has been diving into the science and explanation for years now so that she could be a leading voice in the personal care products conversation. This second bill won't go to committee until they want to spend the resources for a committee to look into it. The Personal Care Safety Product Act has some interesting components to it and Stacy shared more on why companies are lobbying hard around this one. Stacy thinks the Natural Cosmetics Act will go through faster, even though the other one has been around longer. The second one only seeks to define what terms mean. This one is sponsored by representative Sean Maloney from New York. Stacy read a press release more on this act, which you can read in full here. Sarah and Stacy discussed their concerns around the way in which we breathe in and absorb (through the skin) the toxic ingredients in the products we use. Stacy's passion is to educate people on the reality that you cannot trust the labels you read. What you can do is scan products in your own house, or products you are considering buying, using the app EWG. If these bills go through, it is a lot less of a burden to the consumer since you won't have to do all this research. The Personal Care Product Safety Act's goal is to strengthen human health by testing the ingredients. If you are interested in asking your representatives to support either of these bipartisan bills, BeautyCounter has created a textbot to help you do this. Text 'BETTERBEAUTY' to 528886. The Clean Fifteen & Dirty Dozen Stacy asked Sarah if she knew that the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen changes every year. Sarah noted that these lists also look at trends and the types of foods that make it onto the list frequently. EWG does a great job of empowering people with knowledge. Sarah feels that they have a balanced approach to their feedback and recommendations. This year's clean fifteen includes: Avocados, Sweet Corn, Pineapple, Sweet Peas frozen, onions, papaya, eggplants, asparagus, kiwis, cauliflower, cantaloupes, broccoli, mushrooms, honeydew melon This year's dirty dozen includes: strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potato, + hot peppers Just because something isn't classified as organic, it doesn't mean that the farmer didn't use a variation of safety practices. Be sure to ask your local farmers about their practices. Perfume Did you know that there is now an EWG verified perfume? The company is called Henry Rose. There are five perfumes and they are fragrance-free. Solar Panels Did you know that there is a 30% tax credit for the installation of solar power on your home? Sarah did know this because her family has been going through a big shift at home to swap to more earth-friendly practices. Sarah does want to make the switch, but the timing isn't right for her household just yet. Matt has been doing the research on this as they prepare to move to a new house. Switching to solar will save you $400 per kilowatt per year; an average 5KW system will save a homeowner $2000/year. Sarah and her husband are looking at possibly moving, so they aren't sure if investing in the solar panels makes the most sense. Stacy referred listeners to this podcast episode for more information on Sarah and Stacy's earth-friendly practices. Climate Trends Stacy asked Sarah if she knew that September 2019 was earth's hottest month ever, specifically North Ameria. On July 31, Greenland lost eleven billion tons of ice. A lot of this goes back to why Stacy and Sarah make the choices they do, with the goal to lower their carbon footprint. Sarah's family has the mantra, 'but the planet' and she shared on how this mindset has impacted her lifestyle and family's choices. Branch Basics is a product that Stacy and Sarah both cannot say enough good things about. You can use the code 'ThePaleoView' to get 20% off your Branch Basics set orders. Black Friday A lot of Stacy and Sarah's favorite brands will be running Black Friday sales, and they will be telling people all about their favorites. Simply subscribe to their newsletters to catch those details. Stacy is offering an exclusive special that only she is offering with BeautyCounter. To subscribe to Sarah's, visit this link. To subscribe to Stacy's, visit this link. Family-Friendly Shows Did you know that there are a lot of family-friendly shows that help educate about topics like food, health and more? Below is a list of Stacy's recommended shows: Planet Earth, Netflix Rotten, Netflix Explained, Netflix Diagnosis, Netflix Food, Delicious Science, Netflix The Paleo Way, Netflix Final Table, Netflix Nile Red, YouTube NOVA, PBS Queer Eye Great British Baking Show Closing Thoughts Stacy and Sarah hope you enjoyed this week's episode. If you have suggested topics or questions please be sure to do that by using the contact forms on both Stacy and Sarah's sites. Stacy wants Sarah to cover one of her questions - why do we not feel good after we travel? Again, Stacy and Sarah love hearing from you, so don't hesitate to reach out! The contact forms on the site are the best ways to touch base, but social media works if you need to use those channels instead. Thanks for listening - Stacy and Sarah will be back next week!
Show #567 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st September 2019. Raj in the USA said "Best EV Podcast out there!" "Martyn gives a nice overview of the day’s EV news, and creates a sense of community by interacting with his listeners. It’s great to participate in his question of the week. So many of today’s EV podcasts are overly “Tesla centric” and as hard as it is for a podcast to avoid that -it’s nice to listen one that’s more inclusive." Mike Cheeseman in the USA said "Daily Must-Hear!" "The world of E-transport is really dynamic, and is unfolding rapidly around the world. Host Martyn has been consistently arranging these fascinating developments into manageable chunks for long enough to be considered a formitable expert in the field, and a very entertaing show host as well. Thanks for doing what you do." Incidentally you've left 197 reviews and 432 5-star ratings. Thank you! An email from Mitchell Sink: "And Id like to suggest that you consider creating two daily podcasts. One covering every thing you can find about Tesla, the other about every thing else that is related to EVs." Finally – took a nail to the new Zoe tyre! Oh no! ESCAPING HURRICANE DORIAN IN AN EV From Joshua Pritt: "With Dorian pressing in to Florida everyone keeps asking how will I evacuate with my 2018 Nissan Leaf. I have to explain to them that I just don't wait until the day of the storm. As long as you leave a day early and use abetterrouteplanner.com to plan the charging stops I should be fine. I also explain that I could use my 2017 Volt and just drive like a normal gas car and wait in line at the gas stations like everyone else!" NEW FROM AUDI IN EUROPE IN 2020 e-tron S in May, e--tron S Sportback in May and e-tron GT in November 2020. FORD EXEC: ICONIC MODELS TO GO AFFORDABLY ELECTRIC: F-150, MUSTANG "Autocar recently traveled to Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. It gleaned exclusive information about the future of Ford, directly from some of its top executives. The article is packed with insight, information, and many direct quotes." says InsideEVs of Ford's Global Product Development Director for Battery Electric Vehicles, Darren Palmer: "I was unsure at first. For me, electric cars were more about sensible buying than the exciting cars I knew. Then Sherif Marakby, our autonomous vehicle CEO, said, ‘trust me this is going to be the next big development in cars’. When you know them, you’ll love them. And he was right. I just couldn’t believe how good these new cars were. They could do things you’d never do in an ICE [internal combustion-engined] car. They were just better. We’re hitting our biggest icons first, but we have more. And we’ll keep working through them. We decided very carefully where we’d play in the electric car market, and that every one would amplify the characteristics of the model it was based on. Each one had to be extremely desirable, but at an attainable price."“It’s the greatest change and opportunity in the auto industry in 30 years, and probably a lot longer. Today’s performance BEV isn’t just about the electric motor. It’s about software, surprises, over-the-air updates, cleverness, the fact it can learn and anticipate what you want, and makes your life better. It’s an entirely new kind of product. Those who try it will never go back." https://insideevs.com/news/367357/ford-executive-spills-ev-future-details/ RENAULT ZOE WINS IN JULY In Europe: "The big news in July was that the Renault Zoe profited from the expected Tesla off-peak month, winning another monthly trophy, its 4th this year. The French hatchback and Tesla Model 3 have divided all the monthly wins this year (January, April, May, July for Renault, and February, March, June for Tesla)." says CleanTechnica: "With Tesla starting to deliver the Model 3 SR/SR+ versions by now and Renault expected to double the Zoe’s output with the upcoming restyling, do not expect the current status quo to change much, or at least until the VW ID.3 starts to deliver in large volumes, expected by Q2 2020." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/30/renault-zoe-wins-in-july-but-tesla-model-3-remains-2019-leader/ VW’S SEAT UNVEILS SLEEK NEW MEB-BASED ELECTRIC SUV WITH 77 KWH BATTERY PACK "Seat, a Spanish automaker owned by Volkswagen, has unveiled a new electric SUV concept with a 77 kWh battery pack based on VW’s new MEB platform under its Cupra brand." says Electrek: "The concept is equipped with “a 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack”, which Seat claims is good for up to 450 km (280 miles), but the figure is based on the WLTP test cycle. It’s not as stringent as the EPA standard. The battery pack is powering 2 electric motors with a combined 225kW (306PS) output. Inside the vehicle, there are 4 sculptural bucket seats and 2 large screens. The prototype of the Tavascan concept is going to debut at this year’s IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show." https://electrek.co/2019/09/02/vw-seat-cupra-meb-electric-suv-battery/ VOLKSWAGEN ID.R SETS RECORD ON TIANMEN MOUNTAIN The ID.R currently holds the records on Pikes Peak (USA) and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (GB), the electric lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (D), and now the fastest time for an ascent of Tianmen Mountain in China. The car is the motorsport ambassador for the new, fully-electric range of vehicles from Volkswagen, the ID. family, the first of which – the ID.3 – will have its world premiere on 10 September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Romain Dumas (F) completed the 99 tight corners on the Tianmen Mountain road in 7:38.585 minutes – faster than ever before. QUESTION OF THE WEEK SHAHAD I live in an apartment with no charging access, so I primarily charge at work. I plug in for the last few hours of the day after people start going home and chargers open up. I only need to do this a few days a week to top off. My work offers free charging so this works very well and I've had to stop at a paid charger once in the past 2 months of owning my EV. This includes the extra miles I spend driving for Lyft to make the payments, since I hadn't financially been planning on upgrading until my old car unexpectedly died. I was already EV curious, but your podcast was one of the things that pushed me over the edge on the decision to upgrade, keep up the good work! KARL CRAMER As a renter I can't charge at home. Luckily work offers free charging, from solar power, and my gym has a nearby parking lot with free charging too. That's my morning and evening charging routine. DOUG VOWLES Too often parameters and criteria from the gas/petrol world are overlaid on the EV world by non-EV owners, and those wishing to become EV owners. Hence the “How far can you go?” types of questions. The reality of timely e-sips and the occasional full charge needs to be put out there. If the new model is understood and internalized by the buying public then perhaps the need for “big range” can take a back seat to every day practicality. JOHN CHRISTENSEN My wife and I have had our Chevy Bolt for a year in Chicago, Illinois, USA. We have a level 2 EVSE in our garage. Our charging routine changes with the season. In the spring and fall we leave our car unplugged and charge only every other week, because at that time of year the Bolt is much more efficient. But in the summer and winter we leave it plugged in. This is because in the summer our garage gets pretty hot and the Bolt needs to cool the battery and it’s best to leave it plugged in to keep the battery conditioned. Then in the winter it’s the other extreme; it gets super cold and the car then needs to be plugged in to heat the battery. Plus the range drops significantly and we want to get the most range we can then. So it changes season to season. JONATHAN PRICE As the Zoe became our primary car 4 KW solar was not sufficient to fully power the Zoe along with household consumption, particularly in winter of course. This summer I upgraded to 8KW solar and a single Powerwall 2 battery ... a large part of which is funded by cumulative FIT payments since 2011. I’ve added a Zappi hub and extra sensors to tune the battery and car charging and consumption. With the extra solar I can run my Zoe on sunshine for much more of the year, sometimes dumping excess from the Powerwall too ... 3.5KW from Powerwall plus 3.5KW from Solar even on partly sunny days allows me to charge for free at 7KW on many days ... giving a fast - not rapid - charge boost during the day when needed. Zappi now varies charge rate automatically between about 1.4 and 7KW to avoid any unnecessary consumption from the grid. Since I had a PW2 installed in mid May my Zoe has been about 85%+ solar power DAVID NYE Our PHEV has only around 40-45 kilometres of range on battery, so it’s pretty important to top up every night. I use off peak power and charge it after midnight. We can and sometimes do top up a little at the local shopping centre, though it’s only 3.6kW. SACHA I’m a city dweller so no home charging like in suburbia .. - charging once a week or so at supercharger (I got parking at a location with supercharging which happens to be at a transit station). - SOC 65-85% is normally where I stop - When traveling I use superchargers only (900 mile trip every 2 weeks , L2 would make a 8h a much longer trip otherwise) ALEX BANAHENE I started of doing full charge at home every time it got down to about 50 miles but after a year of use I’m happier now to go down to 20 miles or so. Generally this meant charging about once a week which I normally did on a Sunday. EDUARD PERTINEZ We plug the car (a Kona EV 64kWh) almost every night. It is configured to charge from 1am to 7am and fill up to 80%. Here in Catalonia you can opt for special night tariffs that are only 8cents of Euro for kWh. Night tariffs are so cheap because nuclear fussion and wind generation at night surpasses demand. So in fact I am charging my car with recicled energy. It cannot be greener than that! RICHARD I have a new Zoe that gets 280km between charges. I charge often as I like to park at an EV station when I shop. Tops the car off and I like the designated spot. Never abuse my stay. Win win. JERRY ALLISON I have owned a model 3 for a year now and I charge the car whenever I can. This is mostly at Chargepoint stations for an hour or so at a time (equates to 19MPH FREE charge). I tend to charge if possible when I go out for dinner or lunch. Some stations provide faster 26MPH charges and are also FREE, mostly because they are city owned and free to the public. I charge at home about once or twice a month. There are 12 solar panels on my roof and they produce approx. 1400 plus watts of electricity. And if I need to charge at home, I tend to wait for a sunny day. MARK WESTON When I took delivery of my Hyundai kona electric Premium SE 64kwh I asked that exact question. I was told only to charge to 100% when going on long journeys at home and on the road to 80%. At home I charge to 80% run it down to between 20 -10% then recharge back-up. On occasions back-up to 90%. I'm currently charging around every 7-8days. Great show as all ways. Thank you for what you do. QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 19th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEWS IN BRIEF *VW's North American CEO, Hinrich Woebcken, told Autocar that it's future EV's, cars like the I.D. Crozz and I.D. Buzz would need to be built in North America rather than imported * The new Nissan LEAF is the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe for the first half of this year, selling 18,000, and that's now 37,000 it total for the new model Europe since last October * Volkswagen Motorsport, fresh from setting records with the I.D. R Pikes Peak racer, has urged World Rally Championship to find an alternative energy solution for the series, including electric drivetrains from 2020 TESLA MODEL S LOGS OVER 400,000 MILES IN THREE YEARS Congratulations eHawk! Tesloop, the shuttle service in California and Nevada, have a habit of christening their cars and it's eHawk which we're celebrating today, because 400,000 miles just ticked over on the clock. "eHawk has undergone three major services during its time with Tesloop" says Stephen Edelstein on Digital Trends: "The car’s front drive unit (this is an all-wheel drive “D” model with electric motors for the front and rear axles) was replaced at 36,404 miles. The car’s 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack has also been replaced twice: in August 2016 at 194,237 miles, and in January 2018, at 324,044 miles. "But the battery packs weren’t replaced because they were too degraded, according to Tesloop. The first replacement would not have been necessary if a firmware update had been available earlier, the company said. The car’s range estimator would decrease by 10 miles, even without any loss of charge, something Tesla attributed to an issue with the software that calculates range. The second pack was replaced when the car was brought in for an unrelated issue, Tesloop said." And in case you're wondering, yes Tesla did all that work for free. With an 8 year warranty, and at the current mileage, eHawk will be a million-mile Model S after 8 years. https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/tesloop-tesla-model-s-90d-covers-400000-miles/ BMW i3 120AH RUMOURED TO HAVE A RANGE OF OVER 350 KM "The BMW i3 and i3s models will soon get a bump in range" according to the experts in know over at BMW Blog: "An i3 120Ah model is launching late this year – early 2019 for some markets – bringing a bigger capacity battery pack and implicitly longer driving range. Intensive preparations are underway in the background for the debut of a BMW i3 120Ah , which promises a standard range, according to NEDC, of over 350 kilometers – around 217 miles" Will BMW keep the range extender? https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/07/17/bmw-i3-120ah-rumored-to-have-a-range-of-over-350-km VOLVO XC60 EV VERSIONS HINTED WITH B4, B5 TRADEMARKS ANTHONY ALANIZ, Motor1.com USA: "Volvo trademarked both the XC60 B4 AWD and XC60 B5 AWD nameplates. Deciphering the trademarked names is easy. The B4 and B5 likely denote the XC60’s powertrain, which would be on brand for the automaker. You see, Volvo signifies its petrol powertrains with T – T5, T6, or T8 (plug-in hybrid). Diesel engines go under D4, D5, D6. If Volvo is introducing a new line of powertrains, then a new designation is needed. And if Volvo is pushing to sell electric vehicles, then B for battery almost makes too much sense." https://uk.motor1.com/news/252974/volvo-xc60-b4-b5-trademarks/ GERMANY ORDERS TESLA DRIVERS TO PAY BACK EV SUBSIDY Imagine getting a free $5,000 subsidy off a new Tesla, having it on your driveway and using it every day, and then getting a letter from the government saying you have to pay back the grant. Because that's what has happened to Tesla owners in Germany. "Germany's Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control said in a statement on Tuesday that approximately 800 Tesla Model S owners who purchased their vehicles before March 6 must pay back a €4,000 (about $4,650) EV subsidy" as reported by Andrew Krok for CNET's Roadshow. The issue comes down to whether a base Model S can be bought for 60,000 Euro, which at Germany decided you couldn't then decide you could, and now seem to have decided you can't. Maybe someone at the government just needs to go to the Design Studio, select the base car with no options, see that it's under 60k and made a decision. It doesn't help that the grant is also paid for by other German car makers. Oopsie. TEsla said: "The arbitrary decision to temporarily remove Tesla from the list of vehicles eligible for the Environmental Bonus (Umweltbonus) was unjustified, contrary to the stated goals of the program, and unfair to our customers," said a Tesla spokesperson in an emailed statement. "We are appealing [the German government's] decision to take this action against our pre-March 2018 customers. To make sure our customers are not harmed by this decision, we will cover the cost of the bonus for them until the issue is resolved." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/germany-tesla-model-s-subsidy-payback/ LG CHEM TO BUILD $1.8 BLN EV BATTERY PLANT IN CHINA "South Korea’s LG Chem plans to invest $1.77 billion to build its second electric car battery plant in China to meet growing demand, a company spokesman said on Wednesday" Reuters reports: "The investment will be made by 2023 to increase its total output capacity to 32 gigawatt hours per year, or batteries for around 500,000 electric vehicles, the company spokesman said. LG will break ground on the new factory in October and expects to begin production in October 2019." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-usa/pompeo-says-north-korea-deal-may-take-some-time-sanctions-to-remain-idUSKBN1K82HV ELECTRIC CAR SUPERCHARGING HUBS FOR UK Pivot Power is the UK company building out a £1.6bn network of 45 grid-connected batteries with the added bonus of charging stations attached to them. Utility Week says: "Pivot Power has revealed more details on its plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging “superhub” with a 50MW battery on the outskirts of Southampton. The battery will have storage capacity of 50MWh and cost up to £25 million. Construction is expected to begin in March and be completed three months later in July 2019. The superhub will offer rapid charging for as many as 100 cars at a time and will be capable of supporting the fastest chargers currently available." https://utilityweek.co.uk/ev-charging-superhub-with-50mw-battery-coming-to-southampton/ TESLA VIRTUAL POWER PLANT IN AUSTRALIA PASSES INITIAL TESTING Steve Hanley for Clean Tehnica is keeping up to date on the world's largest virtual power plant, 50,000 5kW rooftop solar systems coupled to 13.5kWh storage in Australia. "So far, the installation of rooftop solar and storage batteries has been completed on 100 homes and the results are everything Tesla expected them to be. In addition to completing the remainder of the Tesla Virtual Power Plant system, the Liberal government that came into power in March is expected to announce $100 million in grants to install battery storage systems on 40,000 more homes in South Australia. Other companies, particularly sonnen, will be involved in the battery storage aspects of the systems for those additional homes." AND FINALLY - LEAF DISCOUNTS Waded Malone at InsideEVs has news to put a smile on prospective Nissan LEAF buyers: "Nissan is now offering $2,000 cash back if you finance through Nissan Motors Acceptance Corporation (NMAC). So long as you live in a state that has adopted a ZEV mandate that is. As is usually the case for electric vehicles from traditional automakers, the best offers are relegated to a few states." Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 8th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. SWISS CHARGERS BY EVTEC PLUGGED INTO 60KWH NISSAN LEAF EVTEC (@EVTECfastcharge) - First attempt successful: The #NISSAN LEAF charges with 102 kW. #EVTEC #CHAdeMO #Fastcharging #Electromobility So it looks like what we talked about yesterday was true, a fast charging rate of 102 kW at the SoC (State-of-Charge) of 32 %. So that would be almost certain that it's the new Nissan LEAF unless they've worked out a way to charge the current 40Kwh battery at twice the speed it's rated at. And considering some owners of the new LEAF are getting 20-30kW on their second rapid charge due to temps, it would be surprising if this wasn't the 2019 model year LEAF. So a recap on the leaked specs, and none of this is official yet. 160kW motor will replace the current 110kW motor. 0-60mph or 0-100kmh will be between 6-7 seconds. The battery capacity will be 64kWh with 60kWh usable. And that should give you a range at least 225 miles, which the Thermal Management System will help with as well as helping with charge rates. The DC Fast Charger will be rated at 100kW and if it's in line with others you’ll be charging at 11kW at home. However, and here it comes, the price is one of the best things about the Nissan LEAF, and it won't be cheap. My prediction is £30,000 before any incentives, that's 34,000 Euro, $52,000 CAD or $40,000 USD. @philroberts - That looks like a rebranded Delta Ultra charger that we offer, looks strange though as can’t see the Chademo holder in the centre and those units I’m pretty sure are only rated for 62.5kW at the moment on Chademo, I’ll ask the question. To be clear it will do 150kW on CCS just not sure it will do that on Chademo as the specs say 125A @500v (62.5kW) although I know the new Chademo spec is out for upto 400kW. That unit is 300A capable but think that’s only for two chargers at same time eg CCS & Chademo together. WILL TESLA MODEL 3 DOUBLE THE SPEED OF MODEL S? "There’s a very interesting thread going on right now over at Tesla Motors Club Forum. It’s along the same lines as a recent article InsideEVs published about Model 3 Supercharging rates" reports George Bower: "based on a Tesla EPA document it looks like the Model 3 could be capable of a maximum charging current of 525 amps. as TMC member Zoomit points out, 116 kW is basically the limit of Gen 2 Superchargers. Perhaps we are seeing a charger limit and not a car limit. Maybe the Model 3 is actually capable of charging at HIGHER than 116 kW. If the Tesla Model 3 could hold this charge rate to 50% state of charge, it would imply 180 kW of charging power." https://insideevs.com/tesla-shipping-model-3-with-2x-model-s-p100d-supercharging-c-rate/ TESLA OFFERS MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES FOR FIRST TIME Tesla started offering test drives of the Model 3 at four Bay Area locations: Dublin-Amador Plaza, Corte Madera, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Yesterday Tesla stareted offering Model 3 test drives at four more locations in the region: San Jose, Burlingame, San Francisco and Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. "The test drives are offered to people who have put down $1,000 deposits on the Model 3. A Tesla staffer will accompany drivers." says The Mercury News. NEXT PEUGEOT 208 GTI TO GO ELECTRIC? Here's a story I first saw in AutoExpress and now it's in Evo.co.uk where Jordan Katsianis says: "The next Peugeot 208 GTi is likely to feature a pure electric drivetrain when it arrives in showrooms next year. As for the next 208 GTi, while the electric version may not immediately strike us as ideal hot hatch material, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t curious about what an all-electric Peugeot GTi might be like to drive." UK EV SALES EXCEED 6,000 IN LAST MONTH Here in the UK it's still Plug In Hybrids which are surging ahead of pure BEVs. 1,519 BEVs (up 4% year-over-year) 4,753 PHEVs (up 54% year-over-year) Diesel sales were down -30% in the first half of the year SEE VOLKSWAGEN'S I.D. R PIKES PEAK RUN FROM A HELICOPTER "This year Volkswagen took its all-electric I.D. R to Pikes Peak and took home the overall record. With Romain Dumas behind the wheel of this 671-hp all-electric race car, the VW managed to run the 12.42-mile circuit in only seven minutes and 57.148 seconds, which was 16 seconds faster than Sebastien Loeb’s 2013 record" according to Autoweek.com: "If you wanted to see what that run looked like, here’s your chance to take a bird’s-eye view. While this isn’t as mind-bending as watching Porsche’s 919 Evo shave a minute off the Nurburgring record, watching Dumas conquer Pikes Peak with only the whirr of electric motors is definitely a different experience." RELAX, YOUR ELECTRIC CAR WON’T SHORT-CIRCUIT YOUR PACEMAKER This will make you smile. You know we were talking about EV myths, here's one i hadn't heard. "Thanks to a recent study by German scientists, one other question appears to have been answered: Electric cars, they found, won’t interfere with a person’s pacemaker" says UF Health Podcasts: "The team found the electromagnetic strength was highest when the cars were being charged, but there was no pacemaker inhibition, no shocks and no devices needed to be reprogrammed. Electric cars are equipped with shielding to prevent electromagnetic interference with on-board computer systems, which the researchers said could explain the low electromagnetic strength inside the cars. This shielding may also be what protected the heart devices from any interference." COMMUNITY @SveinMedhus - Not a single #BEV spoted in Mallorca this week, not even at this charger at Lluc. We have seen one real donkey and plenty of diesel-donkeys. Our donkey driver did not believe in the new 500 chargers to be paid by the ecotax by 2020 as reported by @EVNewsDaily . I miss #Norway
Thursday 10th May 2018. FULLY CHARGED DRIVE MERCEDES EQC Only yesterday I was talking about a 1min long YouTube video, all shaky and blurry, showing the Mercedes EQC. With me like a numpty going on about how the bonnet looks too long for an EV. And then a few hours later Fully Charged released 20 mins of gorgeousness as Jonny Smith got in the passenger seat. As they say: "Jonny Smith goes for a ride in the Mercedes-Benz EQC. This SUV is the first Mercedes EV to be built from the ground up and it will the first of the new range of electrified cars to be announced later this year. The EQC is still in testing so this is a very early look at what is to come in the near future." Jonny's style is SO good, relaxed and asking the odd cheeky question, getting bits of info out of PR people who are notoriously tight lipped. I was talking to someone recently about him, someone I know who work on car magazine, and I was saying how Johnny is the best of the best when it comes to telling the story of a car...and then my friend tells me Jonny used to work for him on a magazine. And yes, he also confirmed, he's a bit of a legend. Anyway away from my mancrush and back to the Mercedes EQC. I’m about to say a couple of details from the vid, so if you’d rather, stop the podcast now. Johnny started off by saying it was their first proper EV, which I’ve said before, and got corrected by a very generous listener - rather than telling me I am an idiot, he sent me a pic of his B250. So yes, this isn't Mercedes first EV. Things we learn from the video, it's a 70kWh pack which seems small They want 500km or 310miles from that, which sounds optimistic? That would be 14kWh per 100km. The Model X is something like 380km with a pack 5kWh larger. The person who was doing the driving and most of the talking was the lead engineer, which was refreshing, as he wasn't a typical PR media type with a perfect answer which says a lot without saying anything, everything he said has value. Typical engineer. And bear in mind English is not his first language. Talking about the engineer who was driving it, he kept stabbing the accelerator and giving Jonny that burst of EV power, and every time he did it gave a little smile. Yesterday on the podcast I commented that the bonnet is too long, they could make it smaller and just have a crash structure, which makes more room for the cabin. That was explained because the platform will be used for electric, hybrid and gas. Under the hood or bonnet is a cradle that fits where the combustion engine fits, so Mercedes can use the same production line and drop in the powertrain. And…Jonny ends up on his hand and knees. But I won’t spoilt THAT surprise. Finally if you haven’t been watching Fully Charged, go onto YouTube, go back a few years and see Robert talking about trying to cajole PR departments to return calls or play ball with lending him vehicles. Fast forward and they have the best videos than any TV show, a live event soon and a massive Patreon supporter base. Huge congrats to Robert, Jonny, Mark, Dan and the team for creating a great channel. It's another gorgeous video with some classy tracking shots and they've got the drone up. BMW WIRELESS CAR CHARGING COMING SOON Car Magazine reports that BMW will debut it's wireless charging in July this year, and it's set to work with BMW PHEV's. The Car Magazine article says: "BMW sources told CAR today (May 8) that the tech is indeed headed for our market, and will be available exclusively on a leasing deal with a 5-series 530e iPerformance. To start with, that is". Wireless charging can be as good as a home Level 2 charger at 7.7kW, although this BMW systen works at 3.5kW for a full charge in 3-4hrs. There's leeway on being over the charging pad but cameras will guide into you the correct position. Well worth following CAR on socials, they are some of the best out there for great content. GOVERNMENT APPROVES GREEN LICENCE PLATES FOR E-VEHICLES In India they have confirmed green plates for EVs, private electric cars and EV cabs. "The purpose behind distinctive number plates is their easy identification for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones besides other proposed benefits like concessional toll, the road transport" says MoneyControl.com. This is what we need here for ICE cars parking in electric charging bays. If we all had green plates and legislation to keep EVs in certain spaces, it would mean those ICE cars would get tickets or towed. THE 'DRY ANALYST' WANTS ROUND TWO WITH ELON Dry Dave wants another go with Elon. I didn't actually catch the name of the analyst on the Tesla earning call who got cut off by Elon for asking a dry question, so we'll call him Dry Dave for now. I’ll Google him whilst talking. Anyway, he's p'eed off. And you don't want an upset analyst because, well, who knows what they do? Anyway, now Dry Dave has written an open letter to Elon - which sounds a bit needy already - he says "I continue to hold Tesla accountable for implementing a strategic vision that aligns with an ability to execute at scale. Name the time and place and I will be there, along with every one of your major shareholders." He's also sent Elon a set of written questions which I imagine he'll hope are more...I don’t know…wet? Somehow I don't think Elon will even give this a second of his time. Ah here we are, his name is Joseph Spek apparently. Spekky! I wouldn't hold your breath for that call Super Speks. GERMANY'S MERKEL SEES CHANCE FOR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY PRODUCTION IN EUROPE German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that German car makers are moving into a better position for battery production. The actual cells inside batteries all come from South Korea or China. Volkswagen-owned truck maker Scania said earlier this year it is investing 10m Euro as part of a 4bn Euro project to build Europe's biggest battery cell plant in northern Sweden. ONE THIRD OF IRISH DRIVERS PLAN TO BUY A FULL-ELECTRIC CAR IN NEAR FUTURE Yesterday we told you how 50million, or 20% of Americans are considering an EV for their next car. Now the Irish Mirror says: "One in three Irish motorists planning on buying a new car in the near future will go for a full-electric vehicle, according to a new survey. A total of 37% of people questioned said they will buy an electrified car next time around." NEW LAW TO SEE ELECTRIC CARS MAKE MORE NOISE "From July 2019, all new electric and hybrid vehicles sold in Europe must be equipped with sound devices. Older electric cars must also be retrofitted with sound devices by 2021" says Garage Wire. Kevin Clinton of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “The greatest risks associated with electric vehicles are when they are travelling at low speeds, such as in urban areas with lower limits, as the noise from tyres and the road surface, and aerodynamic noise, are minimal at those speeds" But you do still have eyes. I do think we need to consider those who are visually impaired. But making every single car emit white noise is going to be irritating. Driving around a city you never get another 20mph, and with the windows down, your EV would actually be louder than an ICE car. Multiply that by every other car on the road. All we’ll hear is buzzes and beeps and white noise. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
