William (Bill) Broadie passed from his earthly life to his eternal heavenly home on January 21, 2021, after a six-week battle against COVID-19. Bill was born February 26, 1948, in Ashland, KS, to Elmer (Raymond) and Leta (Luke) Broadie. Bill graduated from Ashland High School in 1966. He was a life-long resident of Ashland, KS, a fourth-generation cattleman, and a proud United States Marine. Bill loved being a cowboy. Stories of a young Bill working alongside his father and “helping” out on the ranch were frequently retold. One story often heard was of a very young Bill looking up at one of the cowboys and saying, “Do you want to have some fun?” At that moment, he spurred his Shetland pony, Dynamite Dan, as they went bucking through the middle of the herd “whoopin’ and a hollarin’” and scattering the entire herd after a full morning of gathering. Bill often said it was a good thing it took several hours to regather the cattle; otherwise his father would have killed him. Bill often told stories about growing up on the ranch as a kid. He had several mishaps, including being kicked or runover by cattle or getting bucked off his horse. The first aid administered to him by the cowboys were phrases like “I guess they won’t hurt you in football,” or “Get up it will make you tough,” or “It’s a long way from your heart.” These valuable lessons learned on the ranch of toughness, determination, perseverance, and hard work were reinforced as a Marine and carried him throughout his life. The next chapter in his life was set in motion when Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During Bill’s deployment to Viet Nam, he was wounded twice. The second one resulted in the amputation of his leg. To put it simply, his air evacuation did not go smoothly. As his good friend Rod Raso stated, “Who the hell else can get shot, dropped out of the helicopter that is supposed to be evacuating him, and still survive?” Bill spent six months in the Philadelphia Naval Hospital recovering from his injuries. He was awarded two Purple Heart Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. He received an honorable medical discharge in 1968. Bill returned to Ashland and married his high school sweetheart, Linda Kaye Clark, on July 27, 1968. They enrolled at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, to pursue their educational goals and started their family with the birth of their son, William Barrett on June 8, 1970. Graduating from college, in the spring of 1971, they returned to Ashland to partner with his father & grandfather on the ranch. They gave birth to daughter, Amy Lynette on March 27, 1974. Bill’s determination for leading a full and independent life remained a focal point of his character. He resumed his normal activities of riding horses, roping, doctoring and taking care of cattle, as well as (reluctantly) learning to drive a tractor again, mastering all of these tasks with his wood leg. At one point, his prosthetist wanted to understand why he was breaking so many wood legs. After spending a couple of days on the ranch with Bill, he quickly understood and came up with a reinforced leg, designed to better withstand the cowboy life. Bill never used his disability as an excuse. He never complained about the hand he was dealt. He led by example and taught his children to get up, keep going, and work hard. If he felt that a pity party was carrying on too long, he would offer a spare leg for a kick in the butt to get you going. In 1988, Bill joined on with Superior Livestock Auction, a young company that was to revolutionize the cattle industry. Setting out to build a new career with Superior, he saw the benefit for both producers and livestock in this model of bringing the traditional cattle auction to satellite TV. As a representative for Superior Livestock Auction, his circle of business associates grew nationally. Bill personally marketed over 500,000 head of cattle over the course of 32 years and created a team that has collectively marketed over 2.2 million head of cattle. He helped build the foundation and reputation of this young company into a nationally recognized and successful marketing option for ranchers. After 9/11, Bill saw the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq lingering on. Always driven to serve, Bill was moved to do something after seeing the press vilify the troops, just as they had done to the Viet Nam veterans. Combining his two life passions, the beef industry and his brothers and sisters in arms, Bill wanted to show his appreciation to them by serving steak dinners to the troops and their families. Bill, along with a core group of dedicated and committed friends, successfully created the All-American Beef Battalion. Since April 26th, 2008, they have served approximately 418,000 service men, women, and families in 28 states. Bill was continually overwhelmed by the commitment, dedication, and love given by the men and women who have selflessly sacrificed countless hours to the beef battalion, in order to fulfill their mission of serving ribeye steaks to the troops. Bill will always be remembered for his toughness, generosity, and his ability to just “call it like it was”.

My guest this week is the chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, Kate Lee. As well as being a CEO, Kate’s a wife, mother and daughter. Her 80-year-old mum’s vascular dementia is now so advanced that she lives in a nursing home and can’t talk; the only way Barbara can show her daughter that she loves her is to hold her hand. At the moment, of course, along with thousands of others, these two can’t hold hands, or meet, or hug or be together in any meaningful way, at all. A few weeks ago Barbara’s husband of almost 60 years was persuaded to go and visit her so that he could wave through a window. I saw a short video of this on Twitter and was very moved – the accompanying tweet said, “On a freezing morning, with our backs to the wind, we waved and shouted to mum through a window”. It was only on my second viewing of the shaky film that I realised that the daughter was in fact Kate Lee. So it’s quite obvious that the woman heading up the Alzheimer’s Society brings a very personal perspective to her new role. Since taking up her post just a few days before the country went into its first Covid lockdown in March, she’s not been afraid to talk about what she and her family are going through in the national press, on TV and radio, and on social media, particularly Twitter where she has well over eight thousand followers. She knew that it was vital to come up with a contingency plan ASAP. Since April, when it was feared that the society might lose half its voluntary income, she’s had to furlough 400 staff, lost about 320 colleagues through redundancy and and taken out £12 million of expenditure. In doing so, the projected loss has been almost halved, from £40m to just over £22m and, importantly, the society hasn’t had to renegue on any current research funding. We talked a lot about her own family’s story, about the challenges of being both the daughter of someone living with dementia and the CEO of the UK’s biggest, most influential organisation in the dementia sector, about the realities of the condition (which aren’t always quite as they’re portrayed in the movies), about the tricky role of a close relative who lives some distance from his or her loved one and isn’t a primary carer but wants to help. And of course we talked about how the Alzheimer’s Society has responded to the coronavirus pandemic, particularly the vexed issue of care home visiting, and her vision for the organisation’s post-Covid future.https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On this episode of the Find Calm Here Podcast, I share my gratitude for the many people who've helped support the creation and implementation of the Find Calm Here Community, live workshops, and interactive virtual events throughout the past year. If you are new here, I’d like to take you through the journey of how this community was built, and give credit to those who’ve helped support this little idea I’ve had into what it is today, and what I hope it will become for the future. The very first Find Calm Here “event” was an “open house” at my apartment, to share how I’ve created a space of calm, with the products and services I’ve come to depend on for helping me get through tough days, deal with depression, cope with loneliness, and become resilient.A close friend, Lisa, who started her own interior design company, helped me create a mood board for my apartment.Years of learning the benefits of essential oils, thanks to my friend Leah, I invited her to speak about how essential oils have helped her manage stress and offer relief for physical and emotional ailments.A dear friend, Elaine is a brilliant painter and mixed-media artist who’s been a bright light in some dark times. This pandemic has put a damper on a number of people especially residents in nursing homes who are not allowed visitors. That did not stop a woman named Nina Ambrose. Her father was put into a nursing home because he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease in January. 2 months later, the lockdown meant she could not visit her dad, Roger. She was then furloughed from her job so she applied to volunteer as an activities and events coordinator at her dad’s new place of living. Since April, she has been doing around three shifts a week at the nursing home, and after each one she gets to visit her dad. So sweet! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Recommended vidoes to watch - my buddy Kyle Conner has taken a 20 minute tour of the Nissan ARIYA. A potentially important car if they price it correctly and promote it to their customers. It's not the 'new LEAF' its a ground-up rethink of an EV. They seem to have parked inside a painfully trendy loft apartment with stripped back brick walls, and it's in the launch colour which I'll generously call copper. It's on the InsideEVs channel. And secondly it's rare that two people send me a video recommendation within a few minutes of each other, but the brilliant Jason at Engineering Explained channel asks: "Why do bigger wheels mean worse efficiency, when the overall tire diameter remains the same? This comes down to aerodynamics. A 20" wheel will cause more of a disruption in airflow than an 18" wheel. That's why Tesla (and others) uses aero covers on their wheels (Car & Driver testing showed it gives about a 3% efficiency bonus at speed). The smaller the wheel, the more of the side profile of the wheel & tire is perfectly flat (the tire is flat, the wheel is open: more tire = more flat area, less open area). Ideally, you'd have just a plain, solid sheet for the wheel, but obviously that's not idea for brake cooling. Wheel covers are today's common compromise as they have some airflow, but minimal. Let's bring back big sidewalls! Watch till the end to learn how fat sidewalls will save the planet." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYvKxsYFqO8&feature=emb_title&ab_channel=EngineeringExplained FORD E-TRANSIT UNVEILED "Ford debuted its all-electric E-Transit van this morning, and I have to say, of all the electric car debuts we’ve seen in recent years — the Volkswagen ID.4, the Mustang Mach-E, the Hummer EV, the Cadillac Lyriq, yes, even the Polestar 2 and Honda E — the E-Transit is more exciting than them all." says Erik at Jalopnik: "This is because the E-Transit has practical applications that other EV cars simply don’t offer. Vans tend to be used for short trips and are also used widely for the so-called “last mile” of deliveries. An electric van completing those trips should have meaningful effects on emissions since commercial vehicles contribute a fair amount of pollution to the environment." With a usable battery capacity of 67kWh, E-Transit offers an estimated driving range of up to 217 miles on the combined WLTP cycle, providing enough range to meet daily requirements, but with sufficient additional capacity to account for variations in vehicle load and weather conditions. This makes E-Transit ideal for urban environments, fixed drive routes and deliveries within geofenced zero-emission driving zones, without requiring fleet owners to pay for excess battery capacity they don’t need. The vehicle also supports Scheduled Pre-Conditioning, enabling the climate control system to be programmed to adjust the cabin to the preferred temperature while the vehicle is still on charge, ensuring that the maximum driving range is available. E-Transit can reduce service cost of ownership by approximately 40 per cent compared with internal combustion engine-equipped models, as a result of lower maintenance expenses. The vehicle’s 11.3kW on-board charger is capable of delivering a 100 per cent charge in up to 8.2 hours. Charging with up to 115kW using a high-power DC fast-charger, E-Transit can top-up the battery from 15 per cent to 80 per cent in around 34 minutes. E-Transit features optional Pro Power Onboard, which enables customers to transform the vehicle into a mobile power source, providing up to 2.3kW for powering tools and equipment on the jobsite and on the go. This is an industry first for light commercial vehicles in Europe. Designed with uncompromised cargo volume capacity, E-Transit’s battery is located underneath the body, providing up to 15.1 cubic meters of cargo space, the same as a rear-wheel drive diesel Transit. Ford engineers redesigned E-Transit’s driveline and rear suspension system to optimise cargo space, creating a heavy-duty semi-trailing arm suspension system that enables better steering precision and more confident handling, plus better traction in both laden and unladen conditions. In Europe, Ford will offer a generous choice of 25 E-Transit configurations, with van, double-cab-in-van and chassis cab body styles, multiple length and roof-height options, and a range of gross vehicle mass options up to 4.25 tonnes, to support a wide variety of customer needs $45,000 is 4k above combustion version. Needless to say, workers’ union IG Metall was not happy about the executive’s alleged “betrayal.”" reports Teslarati: "While neither Reif nor Tesla has confirmed the news, IG Metall took the unusual step of announcing the executive’s departure from Mercedes-Benz’s engine factory at Berlin. As noted in a report from Deutsche Welle, the union announced the “defection” in a press release calling for protests at the engine factory on Thursday, November 12. Jan Otto, head of IG Metall Berlin, shared the union’s sentiments about Reif’s departure." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-diamler-exec-enrages-german-union-over-treason/ POWERCELL GETS MORE ORDERS FOR FC STACKS FROM BOSCH "PowerCell Sweden has been given a further order from Bosch worth the equivalent of around 900,000 euros to supply FC stacks of the PowerCell S3 type next year. The deal is part of a joint development and license agreement signed in 2019." reports electrive: "Since April 2019, Bosch and PowerCell Sweden have been working together on the development, production and marketing of a stack for the automotive sector based on the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEM) called PowerCell S3. PowerCell sells its fuel cell for other segments. For example, according to an earlier announcement, the company has signed a contract with an unnamed “leading European shipyard” for the development and supply of a marine fuel cell system with a total output of approximately 3 megawatts. The system is to be developed and delivered within three years. Bosch sees long-term potential in the mobile fuel cell technology business in the billions. Bosch has already made clear some time ago that starting with commercial vehicles, Bosch fuel cell drives would then be increasingly used in passenger cars in the future." https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/11/powercell-gets-more-orders-for-fc-stacks-from-bosch/ You can listen to all 928 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Since April, the price of used cars has surged. Some cars have even gained in value, which is highly unusual for an asset that usually depreciates. Turns out the usual suspects are behind this mystery: supply and demand.
Since April, Gabon has been under a health state of emergency. The Central African country is facing a major economic hit as a result of Covid-19 lockdown measures and the fall in oil prices. The scars from this unprecedented crisis could remain on Port-Gentil, its oil capital, for a while. Businesses, shops, transport, tourism and other sectors in the country's economic hub are all struggling. Port Gentil has lost millions of euros over the last six months and is relying on public investment to survive. Our team reports.

It's early in the fire season, but already California has seen the worst year on record, with over 3 million acres (or 3% of the state's landmass) burned by mid-September. We're joined by the Sunrise Movement's Moiz Mir to walk us through how we got into this hellscape, and what we can do moving forward. Trump stopped by Sacramento on Monday. He didn't do or say much of consequence, but he did make his usual reactive statements on climate science and asserted that California needs to thin out its forests. There was a somewhat awkward moment where Governor Gavin Newsom pushed back on Trump's climate-denying claims, for what that's worth. The governor's office also gave federal officials a comically simple pamphlet on some of the more concerning facts around California wildfires in recent years. It's nice to see the Newsom say that he's taking the science seriously. But as Moiz will reminds us, actions speak louder than words. Since April, Newsom has approved 48 new fracking permits throughout the state. The Sunrise Movement is gaining power and prominence, and has in part been credited with Senator Ed Markey's defeat of Joe Kennedy III, as well as Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush's stunning primary wins for Congress. Here in California, we discuss what's to be done with Democrats who don't get on board with the Green New Deal, or who take money from big oil. Finally, we discuss what went down out in the streets during Trump's Sacramento visit, in which a Volvo clipped two anti-Trump demonstrators, sending one to the hospital, and a California Highway Patrol vehicle abruptly sped up when a demonstrator that it tried to bump climbed onto the hood, sending the young man flying to the ground. He also required an ambulance. Are the stakes and temperature rising? From his podium, Trump brags about federal forces for extrajudicially killing the man who allegedly killed a rightwing agitator in Portland a couple weeks back. Down in Los Angeles, a man walked up to a county sheriff's vehicle and shot both deputies inside. How did we get here? And what happens next? Fiona’s new book, “How They Made It in America”, started with a desire to explore how diverse talented individuals make it big in America. She focused on prominent women immigrants as the book subjects—just because she knew from her own experiences that women face frequent tribulations on their way to success. The topic appeared so rich that it soon became clear she’ll need to write a book series to at least solidly scratch it. Since April 2013, Fiona’s monthly Huffington Post column explores the issues of multicultural women and what it takes to make it in America: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/fiona-citkin-phd/. It was Arianna Huffington (an immigrant from Greece) who invited Fiona to blog there, build the future readership, and see how the public responds to the issues covered. And Arianna’s insights made her a perfect role model for Fiona. With experience as Director of Berlitz, FGI, and a personal consulting portfolio with major corporations, Fiona accumulated skills in public speaking, marketing, coaching, training, magazine and TV interviews, entrepreneurship, and of course, intercultural communication and languages. Fiona speaks three languages: English, Russian, and Ukrainian. After living and working in Europe (Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Austria, Great Britain, and Switzerland) she now resides in Warren, NJ, USA, and can be reached at fiona@fionacitkin.com. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Fiona first came to the United States under a Fulbright scholarship 25 years ago, and how her unique perspective as a female immigrant has informed her work How Fiona transitioned from teaching in Ukraine to becoming a consultant in the United States, and how her career took a “downgrade” when she immigrated How women immigrants often have to start over regardless of their professional background in their nations of origin How immigrant men and women share common challenges like language barriers, and how women experience additional challenges like sexual harassment and the glass ceiling Fiona shares her advice for practitioners looking to create a more welcoming, inclusive and equitable workplace for immigrant employees What important topics and lessons Fiona discussed in her book, and how human resources professionals can help strengthen a diverse, inclusive and equitable environment Why offering new skills to immigrant employees is only the first step, and why creating a safe and welcoming environment is the other critical part of the equation Why having an exit strategy is vital, and why understanding the immigrant experience during these difficult times is critical Fiona shares her perspective on the growing sense of nationalism and hostility toward immigrants, both in the United States and globally What wisdom Fiona would share for new immigrants before they enter the workplace in their new home country Additional resources: How They Made It in America by Fiona Citkin: https://amzn.to/2YiCHGN The Bridge: Women Worldwide YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCtnjxZ7nqAi83I-EHOqdVlw Website: http://fionacitkin.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/fiona-citkin-b7416310/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/FionaCitkinAuthor/ Twitter: @FionaCitkin

*) UK, US and Canada accuse Russia of hacking Covid-19 vaccine trials Britain, the United States and Canada have accused Russia-linked hackers of targeting labs in their countries conducting Covid-19 vaccine research. In today's News: Governor vows to fight for ‘heartbeat law’ Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee promised Tuesday to do “whatever it takes” to defend unborn babies from a lawsuit filed by several prominent pro-abortion groups. On Monday, the pro-life republican signed a broad pro-life law to protect unborn babies from abortions once their heartbeats are detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy. However, a judge blocked the law just 45 minutes later after Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and The Center for Reproductive Rights sued. Responding to the lawsuit, Lee said he is committed to defending the law in court, the AP reports. The pro-life legislation includes informed consent measures as well. It requires abortion facilities to inform women about the abortion pill reversal procedure and the size and gestational age of their unborn babies. It also requires abortion facilities to allow the mother to hear her unborn baby’s heartbeat and see the baby on an ultrasound. Lutherans worldwide keep the faith As people across the globe struggle with the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, confessional Lutherans are reaching out with the comfort of the Gospel and practical care. Since April, the International Lutheran Council (ILC) has been chronicling the response of member church bodies around the world in a series of reports at the ILC website. To date, the ILC has highlighted the response of 24 Lutheran church bodies across the globe, including churches in Argentina, Australia And New Zealand, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Germany, Ghana, Haiti, India, Japan, Nicaragua, The Philippines, Russia, Rwanda, Sweden, South Africa, South Sudan, Togo, the United Kingdom and the United States. Many of these nations have restricted church gatherings to limit the spread of the coronavirus. In response, churches have acted quickly to provide online resources for members during the pandemic — through livestreamed worship services, downloadable devotional resources and social media outreach. Updated Friday at 10:25 a.m. CT Newly elected Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa is receiving a salary from the Wisconsin Legislature and Milwaukee City Hall. In April, the Democratic state Assembly member was elected to the Milwaukee Common Council as the first Latina and first openly out member of the LGBTQ community. Zamarripa is a member of three working committees of the Common Council, one of which is the Community and Economic Development Committee where she serves as the vice chair. There are no local laws prohibiting Zamarripa from holding both offices, according to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities. Wisconsin Ethics Commission Administrator Daniel Carlton says the commission has no jurisdiction over whether it is ethical for Zamarripa to hold both offices. Since April, Zamarripa says she’s been directly involved in the work of the Common Council during this historic moment of debates about police accountability and how to cope with a pandemic. “It is definitely long days and

At the beginning of the year, we had the Iran crisis which almost resulted in WW3 breaking out across the world. Following that crisis, we entered into hearing and learning all about the coronavirus. Since April, COVID-19 had dominated our world and the mainstream news. If all that was not enough, the death of George Floyd caused protests nation-wide that resulted in civil unrest, political turmoil, and an overall more confusing year. 2020 has been hard but it is not over. We can still make a change. How do we turn this year around and create a more beautiful world out of these obstacles? We have to take responsibility and realize that we are the ones who consent to government regulations, civil unrest, and a whole lot more. When we make decisions, we choose paths that change our lives and shape the world collectively. It is time we acknowledge those choices and take full responsibility for our actions. Otherwise, things will not get better. Once we wake up and realize that we create and consent to live in this world, our world can be ready for change. The coronavirus lock-down, protests around "Black Lives Matter", counter movements like "All Lives Matter", and a whole more is all stuff that we participate in through one avenue or another. When we refuse to take responsibility for our actions, then we remain a victim to the world.

If you’ve got to go outside for some reason, wear a hat and remember to hydrate! Expect similar hot—and mostly rain-free—weather over the holiday weekend.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 532↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 30↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 51↘️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 25, Henrico: 12, and Richmond: 14). Since this pandemic began, 235 people have died in the Richmond region. So you can see everything in on place, I put together the graphs of new reported positive cases, new deaths, and new hospitalizations plus their seven-day averages here. New positive cases have stuck right around 500 for the past couple weeks, while deaths have increased, and hospitalizations have bounced around a bit. According to VDH the Commonwealth’s percent posititivity is on the rise since about a week ago, but they just reported a ton of tests (increasing the denominator) a couple days back so that could change. When taken together…I’m not sure what to make of all that. Virginia is certainly not in the same dire straights as our Southern neighbors: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida all reported more than 1,500 new coronavirus cases yesterday. In fact, Florida became the first state to report over 10,000 new cases in a single day since New York back on April 15th. I don’t know what keeps Virginia from slipping off of its 500-cases-per-day plateau, but, like, keep doing whatever it is we’re doing! If you’re hanging out this weekend, please, please keep your distance and your masks on.The Mayor’s march down Monument Avenue continues, and yesterday saw the removal of the Maury statue (his globe still remains) and two Confederate memorial cannons from the median of Monument that I’d totally forgot existed. It requires, admittedly, an immense amount of privilege and a massive lack of curiosity to live in a place and just plain forget about its monuments to white supremacy. I had a chance to ride past the now-empty Jackson plinth, and the statue’s absence is striking (see above). The statue took up a building-sized spot in the intersection and now that it’s gone, the space feels open and airy. Getting rid of that plinth—even though it looks pretty rad and definitely serves as an arresting reminder for what we allowed to stand for 100 years—should be at the top of the City’s list. After we work our way through he State’s dumb and required monument process, the Department of Public Works should redesign that intersection to make it way safer for folks trying to walk, roll, or ride on through. As for protests, VPM’s Coleman Jenningsand the Commonwealth Time’s Eduardo Acevedo tagged along with a Marcus-David Peters march and vigil. About 100 people marched from the Jefferson Hotel, where Peters worked part time, to Chamberlayne’s I-95 on-ramp, where Peters was killed by a Richmond police officer. Bike marshals blocked vehicles from getting on the highway, the Virginia State Police showed up, the two groups talked, and then…both eventually dispersed. In fact, police blocked further traffic from heading towards protestors, and protestors packed up and left after a bit. I don’t know what the two groups talked about or agreed upon, but I hope that last night marks a permanent shift in the way the Virginia State Police choose to respond to our ongoing protests against police violence. It was a small moment, but it feels like progress.Related, or conversely, Whittney Evans, also at VPM, dives into some of the history of complaints, lawsuits, and possible legal chicanery at the Richmond Police Department. That’s a lot of not great stuff in the not-so-distant past of the department, and we’ll have to wait and see how the new chief takes the increased scrutiny and demands to, quite literally, strip his budget. The Virginia Employment Commission’s new unemployment insurance claims numbers are out, and, for the week ending June 27th, 398,669 people filed for unemployment insurance. This is down just 2,203 from the previous week, and, I think, this is the first time in a few months that the number of initial claims has gone up (31,955 compared to 25,293). I have no idea if this is a season trend, a blip in the data, or what. Also, check out this PDF of demographic data for unemployment insurance claims. Since April, Black folks have made up a increasingly larger and large percentage of claims. It’s been a while, but you should check out RPS Superintendent Kamras’s newsletter from yesterday, because he’s got pictures from inside the new River City Middle School that’s being built on the Southside. I’ve been doing this with my parenting person hat on, but also as part of my real job. Universities need to reopen, too, and I sit on one of the committees thinking about this at Brown. So I’m steeped in it, at least enough to organize some of my thoughts. Let’s start by assuming we all have two main goals. Goal #1: protecting safety of kids and staff (teachers, sure, but also cafeteria workers, janitorial staff, coaches and everyone else) and the broader public. Goal #2: if at all possible having kids in classrooms in some way more or less full time. The question then, is: What’s it going to take to do that? I have some thoughts, starting with the big picture and moving to the details. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
Since April, the Veterans Affairs and Defense Departments have been fielding what they call bi-directional health records sharing with outside health care providers. This against the backdrop of both departments developing compatible electronic health records using the same vendor, Cerner. Theresa May has made a million pounds on the speaker circuit since she stood down as Prime Minister just under a year ago. We discuss how she’s done it and whether she might have a long career ahead of her doing it. Working parents of primary-aged children often rely on out-of-school childcare for the school run and long summer holidays. But thanks to Covid-19, many of these providers are facing an uncertain future. A recent survey by the Out of School Alliance found that 40% of respondents were unsure they’d be able to re-open in September – meaning that around 250,000 childcare places could be at risk. So where will children go if parents have to return to work and grandparents remain off-limits? Dr Amanda Brown has been working as a GP at Bronzefield, a women-only prison since December 2015. While New Zealand is revelling in the freedoms of Alert Level 1, for around 3000 people in hotel quarantine, just getting a bit of fresh air has been a lot more difficult. Since April, everyone arriving in the country has had to spend 14 days in managed isolation - or higher level quarantine if they have Covid-19 symptoms. But with more people out on the streets, and no need for physical distancing, health authorities have had to re-think how people in managed isolation can get out for some exercise. RNZ reporter Sarah Robson has the story.
Dr. Corsi answers Reuters: "Reporters" Allison Martell and Michael Erman, who cover the pharmaceutical industry and health policy are preparing to publish a story about "the effort to promote hydroxychloroquine to prevent coronavirus infection, including the telemedicine service SpeakWithAnMd and the online pharmacy Bonsa featured" on the corsination.com website. Martell and Erman posed the following "questions": 1. Since April, your website has advertised a service called SpeakWithAnMD that offers prescriptions for hydroxychloroquine to prevent or treat coronavirus infection. In recent weeks, results from clinical trials have shown no benefit from the therapy for COVID-19 patients. The U.S. FDA has also warned against a potential risk of cardiac arrhythmia and says it should only be used for patients who are hospitalized or in a clinical trial. Has this information changed your view of the use of hydroxychloroquine against coronavirus, and if so, how? 2. How do you ensure that the doctors that work with SpeakWithAnMD are willing to prescribe hydroxychloroquine? 3. Many U.S. state pharmacy boards have issued rules that restrict hydroxychloroquine prescriptions and do not allow it to be used as a preventive treatment for coronavirus. How does SpeakWithAnMD and Bonsa ensure they are in compliance with those rules when dispensing hydroxychloroquine? 4. Do you have any financial relationship with SpeakWithAnMD or Bonsa, or with the related companies Encore Telemedicine and Locum Tenens USA? If so, can you provide details on those ties? 5. President Trump has disclosed that he took hydroxychloroquine as a preventive treatment. Have you played any direct role in his support of the therapy or his decision to use it personally? If yes, would you describe your involvement? And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:15 Tune in Monday through Friday at 11:00am EDT for another show. Vincent James Russo (born January 24, 1961) is an American author, podcaster, professional wrestling booker, writer, and pundit. He is notable for his tenures with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in creative roles.[1] Russo occasionally made appearances as an on-screen authority figure, and professional wrestler, in WCW and TNA. His writing style, which emphasizes shock value and "swerves" over in-ring action, has made him a controversial figure within the industry. During a self-booked in-ring career in WCW, Russo became a one-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion,[2] scored televised singles victories over future WWE Hall of Famers Ric Flair and Booker T (the latter to win his world title), and never lost a match.[3] He also placed himself in multiple pay-per-view main events in WCW and TNA.[3] Since April 2015, he has hosted a daily podcast with his company: "Vince Russo's The Brand".

This brief is about the West African and Sahelian nation of Burkina Faso. Several Western countries have recently issued travel warnings and MEA Risk has issued this first impression and additional comments on those warnings. Burkina Faso is a complex place and is likely the weakest country in the Sahel. The recent warnings from Western governments are likely tied to expectations of more violence, lots of it driven by Islamic State, and by the intentions of the French to fight them. Combining both does not bode well for security in the country. In terms of security, Burkina's record is staggering: 499 people (civilians and military) killed between November 2018 and March 2019; 1,933 schools were closed and 9,042 teachers were forced into unemployment, while more than 300,000 kids no longer able to go to school. Since April 2019, armed Islamist groups have killed more than 250 civilians in targeted attacks and summary executions. The killings have often been justified by associating the victims with government and western forces. Hundreds of thousands of people have also been displaced. The destabilization of Burkina is linked to the violence in neighboring Mali. Borders are tough to control and terror groups appear to have a clearer strategy of geographic broadening and regionalizing the crisis, that is working to spread it around. This means with the crisis engulfing Mali, the terror groups have been working to export the mayhem to Niger, Burkina, Chad and northern Nigeria. Frankly the whole region is in state of collapse, and the French forces, the UN, etc.. cannot seem to find the best approach to stop it. The conflict has now expanded into a more complex ethnic and communal crisis. This is because the insurgents and armed groups have been using the grievances and poverty among the Peul or Fulanis nomadic communities to broaden the crisis into a conflict between "tribes". This has been fueling tensions with other largely agrarian communities, including the Mossis, Songhai, Foulsé, and Gourmantche, who were the victims of most of the attacks. The attacks have been cruel, with deliberate targeting of mine workers, farmers, IDPs, religious folks, etc…in a sort of slash-and-burn terror campaign. In all our assessments, Burkina appears to be the weakest point in the entire Sahel and I think the State Department travel warning is indicative of both of the hardening of the Jihadists, and signals coming from the French government of more military assets headed to the region, hence expecting a nasty fight ahead. Beyond Burkina, there is the risk of contagion of the terrorist threat to non-Sahelian countries of West Africa, namely Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea and Togo. Côte d'Ivoire and Benin have already been the targets of terrorist actions. While in Togo, a jihadist group was dismantled in April 2019. There are also chatters on dormant terror cells in Ghana. Finally, if you are operating and active in Burkina Faso, MEA Risk is pleased to announced that, in addition to its tracking and analysis, it offers the Shield and Alert mobile application for iPhone and Android devices, allowing you to visualize and follow what is going on the country any time, all time. Send us an email at inquiries@MEA-Risk.com or just call us at US+508-981-6937 to learn more.

There's a Glass and a Half in Everyone! On Weekend Breakfast we have been on the hunt for Ireland's Soundest Town with thanks to our generous sponsors Cadbury. Since April we've been travelling the country, visiting towns with amazing stories and even better people. Along the way we awarded a Soundtown of each month, however, last week we finally chose our overall winner. The Soundest town in Ireland has been named as Fartown, Co. Galway. On Saturday 16th November we visited Fartown to crown them as the SOUNDEST TOWN! We did the show LIVE from Zanni's house, awarding them the plaque and €10,000 towards a community project. To listen back to how it all went simply hit the listen button above. The Amazing Story Of Fartown Melanie and Jeremy Zanni are overwhelmed by the generosity of local tradesmen who worked around the clock to construct the house for them in a matter of weeks. The Zanni family settled in Fartown over ten years ago when they fell in love with a 300-year-old thatched cottage and set up a bakery. But their home went up in flames and was destroyed following a freak chimney fire. The local community wasted no time in constructing a new home, which the family have now moved into. What our judges had to say: “It was really difficult to choose one overall Cadbury Soundtown Winner. Each of the monthly winners showcased the best of their town and the beauty of the place they call ‘home’. You could sense huge pride in each one of them and it’s great to see that community spirit is alive and well in Ireland today. But there can be only one winner and the judges felt that the winning Soundtown demonstrated the true meaning of ‘community spirit’: rallying around to support your neighbours in times of hardship. As one of the locals put it “it just shows what can be done when people are working together, not pulling against each other”. The people of this town not only rebuilt a house, they rebuilt a home. Our Cadbury Soundtown winner, 2019 is Fartown, Co Galway.” Here's the moment we revealed the winner last week: [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2019/11/16115158/SOUNDTOWN-WINNING-MOMENT.mp3"][/audio] Weekend Breakfast with Alison Curtis, Saturdays and Sundays from 8am
Shooting incidents are becoming a scourge on the American landscape and courthouses are certainly not immune. An incident can last only seconds but the trauma to court staff and the unsuspecting public can live on and on. If a calamity occurs, we face the triple challenge: emergency decisions and communications, dealing with law enforcement and a crime scene, and maintaining or reestablishing ongoing operations. What can your staff and your court do to prepare? What do we keep in mind if it happens? What can we learn from professionals who have dealt with these issues in real time? Patricia Norwood-Foden, Lt. Adam Sibley, Lance Wilson, and Deputy U.S. Marshal Addison Friedman talk about working through tragedy and restoring a degree of normalcy. This is an intriguing episode for listeners interested in emergencies, active shooter situations, courthouse security, and court administration. Leave a comment or question about the podcast at clapodcast@nacmnet.org. Guest Speakers Patricia Norwood-Foden has been the District Court Administrator for the 15th Judicial District of Pennsylvania, Chester County, since 2009. Prior to her current position, she was the Minor Judiciary Administrator and has worked in the judiciary system since 1991. Ms. Norwood-Foden is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, earned a paralegal certification from Penn State University and successfully completed the judicial administration certification program offered by Michigan State University. She is currently pursuing her Master of Legal Studies degree from West Virginia University. Lance Wilson retired in 2017 after a 35 year career in court administration. Lance was District Court Executive/Clerk of Court for the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada (1995-2017). Previously he was Clerk of Court for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania (1991-1995) and as a Chief Deputy/Deputy in Charge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona(1987-1991). Lance started his career in judicial administration with the Maricopa Superior Court in Phoenix, Arizona. Lance holds a Master of Science Degree in Judicial Administration from the University of Denver College of Law and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice/Minor in Fine Arts, from Alvernia College. Lieutenant Adam Sibley served in law enforcement since 2008, and is currently employed with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office in Pennsylvania. Throughout the past ten years, Adam has been involved with the Sheriff’s Office Judicial Security Unit and Protective Intelligence Unit responsible for anticipating, deterring, and investigating threats of violence against court staff and other participants within the Chester County court system. Addison Friedman started with the U.S. Marshals Service in January of 2011. His first duty assignment was in D.C. Superior Court located in Washington, D.C. Deputy Friedman spent three and half years in D.C. before returning back home to Charlotte, NC in March 2015. He is now assigned to the Western District of North Carolina-Charlotte office. Deputy Friedman has held numerous collateral duties to include Use of Force Instructor, Training Coordinator, and COOP Manager. Since April 2017, Deputy Friedman has been assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). In October 2018, Deputy Friedman coordinated a full scale active shooter exercise at the Charlotte Federal Courthouse, which included all Judges, Clerks, U.S. Marshals, Local Law Enforcement, Fire Department, EMS, and the local hospital.
Fun podcast today, as I discuss the Liberation...the "Rescuing" of money that Bank of America nearly stole from Prescilla, a person from my neck of the woods in central NM. With her card duplicated, crooks used her card to steal nearly $1,000 in goods from Smith's Grocery Store in Albuquerque, NM while she was nearly an hour away, card in hand. Our mutual friend Dorella connected us on Social Media, and James for Why Your Bank Sucks was on a mission to get her money back. Learn how text alerts for fraud don't really work, as several transactions still went through. Learn how customers trust too much in how banks handle fraud these days. You will also hear a tangent I have about listening to friends about your bad bank experience, and how it can impact how you deal with it. You will learn some insight as to how I use all the data given to me to help my clients escalate to the very top of BANK OF AMERICA. Plus you will learn about how execs see fraud transactions more logically than the actual fraud department. PLUS.. I TALK ABOUT THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW... IN-N-OUT BURGER and a lot more. (What?!?) It is a fun 40 min story about how I helped someone I kinda know with a bank problem I know far too much about. It was truly a blast. Called the ADAC e-Rally Cup, the series replaces the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup collaboration that helped introduce fresh talent to rallying." reports evo.co.uk: "The Corsa-e Rally car itself shares an identical powertrain to that of the road-going hatchback, featuring a 136bhp synchronous electric motor mounted where the traditional internal combustion engine would normally sit under the front bonnet. The 50kWh battery pack is also carried over, which should help the e-Corsa complete more than a couple of special stages without needing a top-up." https://www.evo.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/201649/new-vauxhall-corsa-e-to-race-in-e-rally-cup FIRST LEXUS EV COULD BE A HATCH, CONCEPT BOUND FOR 2019 TOKYO MOTOR SHOW Toyota is committed to launching at least 10 battery-electric cars by 2025, with the first expected to arrive in 2020. Some of these will come from Toyota's upmarket brand, Lexus, which may give us a preview of what's to come during October's Tokyo Motor Show. Citing comments made by Koji Sato, Lexus' chief engineer, Autocar reported Thursday that Lexus will present an EV concept at its home show that may just preview an upcoming production model." reports Motor Authority: "It's possible the concept will be an evolution of 2015's LF-SA minicar concept, a vehicle that fits the description above. And though the LF-SA concept hasn't been confirmed for production, Lexus is rumored to be looking at adding a model smaller than the UX subcompact SUV." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1124681_first-lexus-ev-could-be-a-hatch-concept-bound-for-2019-tokyo-motor-show 2020 CHEVROLET BOLT EV GETS MORE RANGE "The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV is now rated with a 259 miles (417 km) EPA range and surpasses its most direct alternatives. The alternative that almost matches its range is the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric with 258 miles range, which is just 1 mile less." says Pedro for PushEVs: "The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV and previous model years had an EPA range of 238 miles (367 km), so this latest upgrade in battery capacity represents a 9 percent range increase.the Chevrolet Bolt EV still doesn’t have ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). This electric car and the new Renault ZOE are probably the only mass production electric cars with decent range that still don’t have this important safety feature for less stressful driving." https://pushevs.com/2019/08/22/2020-chevrolet-bolt-ev-gets-more-range/ SINGAPORE FORGOES TESLA'S ELECTRIC 'LIFESTYLE' FOR BUSES "Singapore is in no rush to adopt a certain brand of electric car. In an interview with Bloomberg published today, a government minister offered a rebuttal to Tesla founder Elon Musk's criticism that the city-state is "unwelcome" to electric cars. Investing in mass transit -- rather than Tesla Superchargers -- is how the nation of slightly less than 6 million inhabitants wants to tackle climate change" writes Engadget today. Singapore has embraced electric public buses and is working on developing a system of self-driving, electric taxis. It certainly hasn't ruled out electric cars completely. Last October, British company Dyson Ltd announced that Singapore would be the manufacturing base for its first electric car." https://www.engadget.com/2019/08/22/singapore-forgoes-teslas-electric-lifestyle-for-buses/ STUDY LINKS SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE TO PM POLLUTION TO RISK OF PREMATURE DEATH "A major new international study shows independent associations between short-term exposure to PM10 and PM2.5 and daily all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality in more than 600 cities across the globe." says Green Car Congress: "The study, led by Dr. Haidong Kan from Fudan University in China, analyzed data on air pollution and mortality in 652 cities across 24 countries and regions, and found increases in total deaths are linked to exposure to inhalable particles (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5)" An article from the Telegraph in 2015 talked about the history of PM being in the news: "Particulates – tiny sooty particles in the air – were the first of the pollutants to be identified as toxic, 22 years ago, in a big Harvard study. The seminal 1993 research, dubbed “the six cities study” compared mortality rates in half a dozen representative US urban areas, following the fates of 8,111 adults for at least 14 years." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/08/20190822-nejm.html https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/car-manufacturers/volkswagen/11899676/The-statistics-about-diesel-are-crystal-clear.-Its-deadly.html AUDI E-TRON NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROVIDES DETAILED PETROL INFORMATION "The e-tron’s navigation system was recently observed to have a very interesting, and notably humorous feature: it gives drivers useful information about nearby petrol stations and current gas prices." says Simon at Teslarati: "As noted by drivers who shared images of the e-tron’s navigation in action, the all-electric SUV’s infotainment screen displays information about petrol stations on a selected route. The information is quite detailed too, as it includes the current price of petrol in selected locations." https://www.teslarati.com/audi-e-tron-navigation-gas-stations-diesel-prices/ COMMUNITY The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Submitted by Brian C: "Petrol users pay by quantity. EV drivers should ALSO pay by quantity. All charging companies be required by law to charge per kWh – do you agree?" Interview with Beta Ealy, creative director and Columbia EMBA student [Show Summary] Think that if you aren’t a consultant, IT professional, or finance manager that you don’t have a shot in an EMBA program? Think again. Our guest this week is a creative director with little background in quant who conquered the GMAT and is now thriving in the Columbia EMBA program. Listen in as she shares her views on the program, and how to excel in the application process and in the program itself. From Disney to Columbia Business School [Show Notes] Today’s guest is Beta Ealy. Beta earned her Bachelors in Fine Arts from Cal State Long Beach in 2004 and worked as an art director prior to becoming manager of Creative and Product Development at Disney where she worked from 2004 – 2011. She then worked in similar areas for Mattel, and Discovery Communications where she was a Sr. Manager and Director respectively. Since April 2018, she has served as the Brand Creative Director for the City of Manhattan Beach and in January became a Columbia EMBA student. Can you tell us about your background? Where did you grew up? What do you like to do for fun? [2:12] I grew up near Moscow in Russia. Pretty much everyone in my family is a scientist. My dad got a job at UCLA in the 90s and we moved to Santa Monica. That was how I became a designer rather than a scientist - if we had stayed I definitely would have moved in that direction. Here I saw the opportunity to do something different. I went to Santa Monica High School, which has a great design program, and I worked on real projects with real companies, and that is how I ended up where I am today. In terms of fun, I love to travel, and often spontaneously go on road trips with my husband and dogs, but also love to travel internationally. You started out in college studying art and design, when and how did the business bug bite you? [3:47] After being a creative for a while I saw the industry shifting and the way design/creative was being utilized was very different. I felt a tectonic shift which was very exciting because suddenly product differentiation and design was considered important. Creative leaders all of the sudden had a seat at the table. However, I realized when invited to board meetings I didn’t have the vocabulary to speak to some of these people, and I couldn’t deliver the strategic functions expected of me. When you were researching programs and applying, what appealed to you about the CBS EMBA program? [5:16] I was so excited to find it because of what I was saying a bit earlier. I am coming from a unique background with the idea of creating a bridge between being a creative person and business leader. They teach an entrepreneurial mindset at Columbia which is leadership-based and focused on identifying opportunities and growing industries. Because I was wanting to do something unique and unorthodox that is why it was a good fit. Being located in NYC, with my interest in media, entertainment, and retail, was an added bonus, adding that to my existing LA network. How did you do the research necessary considering you were on the west coast? [6:49] It’s a well-known program, obviously, so that part was easy. Because I have worked with such big companies with a presence in both LA and New York, I already knew a bit about New York in general. Columbia is such a huge player in that world it was easy to get word of mouth, websites to look at, and understanding of a good fit. I didn’t visit until my interview, but met with admissions reps when they came to the west coast. What challenges did you face during the application process? [8:06] If I had to give one piece of advice it is to figure out who your recommenders are going to be early on, as they are very important, not just for the admissions committee but also for yourself. It is important to see who you are through mentors and peers. Make sure you have someone who knows you really well. That was an unexpected challenge.

I’m your host John Haggard and throughout each month right here, as you probably already know, if you’ve been listening, we’ll have different team members join us from Miracle to bring you tips that you can actually use, and answer questions that you probably have in your mind already. And by the way, we will also post a transcript of each podcast so you can easily refer to it. The idea there is if you hear something you want to get the information, not have to listen to everything all over again, just go right to the script and your information is right there. On this podcast we’re talking to Amy Bryant and she’s the Business Development Manager at Miracle Ford in Gallatin. Hey Amy, welcome to the podcast. Amy Bryant: 00:49 Hi John. How are you doing? How Did You Get Into The Car Business John Haggard: 00:51 I’m doing good. Doing good. You know, people always want to know, well, who is the person behind the voice? Who is the person behind the face? So it’s always interesting to know. Amy, how did you get started in the car business? Amy Bryant: 01:04 Well, John, I have to say back in 2013 I was actually a recruiter and one of my clients suggested that I try the car business… that I would possibly be good at it. I have loved it every day since then. John Haggard: 01:18 You say a recruiter, what did, who did you use to recruit for? What type of folks were you looking for? Amy Bryant: 01:23 I was actually a recruiter in the accounting arena, so I worked for Robert Half for many years and that is actually how I even got in the car business. It just kind of fell in my lap and I’ve loved it. John Haggard: 01:33 Wow, okay. So people who needed anything at all to do with accounting, you would call on companies and say, “Hey, if you’ve got a need for bookkeeping or a chief financial officer, we’ve got folks”, that type of thing. Amy Bryant: 01:44 That’s correct. Everything from a CFO all the way down to just a data entry. John Haggard: 01:49 Okay. Okay. So how long have you been doing cars and vehicles? Amy Bryant: 01:52 Since April of 2013 John Haggard: 01:54 April of 2013. All right. And so now how about Miracle Ford? How did you wind up at Miracle Ford? Amy Bryant: 02:01 It’s kind of funny. I actually came to have lunch with one of my coworkers that I have worked with for probably six out of my eight years here in the business and I met him at Miracle Ford. He told me what a great dealership this was. I came to have lunch and the rest is history. I just celebrated my one year anniversary here and look forward to many more years here. John Haggard: 02:24 That sounds fun. That’s how it works. Sometimes it’s all about relationships and who you know and who you get to know. When you hear that title, Business Development Manager, it sounds like a big deal and I’m sure it is, but what does that really mean? What do you really do there at Miracle Ford? What Is The BDC (Business Development Center), and What Do You Do? Amy Bryant: 02:41 My team and I develop the business for Miracle Auto Group. We have a whole center that’s designated to this business and we handle all the internet inquiries promptly. We handle all the incoming calls and make outgoing calls to all of our existing customers as well as any potential new customers. But our main goal is to set appointments for all potential customers with our certified professional staff. You know, one of the things is our time is very valuable and when we schedule these appointments, we are doing this for our customer just to expedite their time that they spend in the dealership. John Haggard: 03:16 Okay. Yeah. Because one of the big complaints of people who come in to try to purchase a vehicle or lease a vehicle, you hear these stories… “it took me all day long to try to try to get something done”. So are you saying that your idea and the way that you do business there is to try to make this a process that doesn’t take very long? Amy Bryant: 03:36 Absolutely. We want our customer to be able to get as much knowledge and gather as much information as they can over the phone so that when they come into the dealership, we’re going to have their vehicle ready. We’re going to have the used car manager waiting to appraise their trade and we’re going to have our finance managers on deck so that they can go right in there promptly. John Haggard: 03:56 Alright, so that makes sense. Because, in other words, like if I respond on the Internet and I see a vehicle that I want, really your team or you are going to be the ones who are behind the scene to be sure that I get everything I need so they don’t have to waste a lot of time coming in there asking questions again. Amy Bryant: 04:12 Absolutely. We want to make sure that that is answered promptly, quickly and give you just as much information as we possibly can. We don’t want to have to wait for a sales person to come off of the floor. We want to make sure that you can reach us each and every time you try to. What Are The Most Frequently Asked Questions That Customers Ask John Haggard: 04:29 All right. That makes sense. Cause people really are, I guess there’s a phrase “time starved” today. What are the typical maybe top two, three, four questions you always get? Questions people want to know first? Amy Bryant: 04:41 Well I think mostly they want to know if the vehicle is still available. Do we still have the vehicle, what is the condition of the vehicle, is it a one car owner, they want to know the history of the vehicle and they always want to make sure that the specs that are featured online are correct. So we always are going to be asked to, is that the best price that’s on the Internet? So those are really the top questions that we get asked. And I would say probably 90% of the time, those are the four questions that are always asked. John Haggard: 05:10 All right. So the idea is give the customer all of the information you possibly can on the phone, again to cut down all the time that they would otherwise have to spend. Amy Bryant: 05:20 Absolutely. Can You Help Someone With Challenged Credit? John Haggard: 05:21 And what if somebody, Amy, has challenged credit. What about that? Amy Bryant: 05:26 We have a department here inside of Miracle Auto Group, and they work with so many different lenders that there really is a great chance that we will be able to get you into a vehicle. All of our highly skilled finance managers, they’re going to work very hard. They will work every avenue they can for our customers to leave with a vehicle. John Haggard: 05:45 Pretty good, strong possibility. You’re saying that they can get financial aid dollars and can that be on a new vehicle or new lease as well? Or is that only on used that you can do that? Amy Bryant: 05:54 No, that’s definitely up to lender and up to the finance manager to decide what’s the best option for the customer. I have found that we all have highs and lows in life and that includes our financial struggles are no different. And we have lenders that realize that and they will assist in giving people a second chance. Even after bankruptcy. Our finance managers are relentless. John, they’re gonna work hard and do all they can for our customers. John Haggard: 06:20 Kinda sound like you. You sound relentless, Amy. Amy Bryant: 06:23 Well… you know, I try. Ha. What Changes Do You See in the Marketplaces Today Compared To Just a Few Years Ago? John Haggard: 06:25 There you go. So, what do you think in the market place today, you hear about these companies like Carvana and all sorts of things that are going on. What changes do you see in the marketplace as people go about making a decision to buy or lease a vehicle compared to maybe just a few years ago. Amy Bryant: 06:42 The Internet, hands down the Internet. Most of the customers that we speak with already know what vehicle they want, what they want to pay for it, and do everything before they even step into the dealership or even speak with someone at the dealership. They do their research. And I think the internet is a fantastic tool for our buyer to have. And I look at the Internet as our friend. I believe that we should be able to have all of our information together, as we all work so very hard for our money, I really think the Internet is the buyer’s friend. John Haggard: 07:16 Well that makes sense. And certainly people on anything, no matter what they buy today, it seems like, we’ll all go up there and get a customer opinion, reviews or just to see, hey, you know, what kind of information can I get? It’s almost like, do you ever feel like this Amy? Sometimes people, they don’t really want to talk to anybody. They want to get all the information first, then call and say, can you do it? Yes or no? Amy Bryant: 07:40 Absolutely. And they have every right to do that. You know, I love it when a customer calls me and challenges me to ask that question and to really put together everything we can for that individual. I don’t ever want to say no and I definitely would work every avenue to make sure that I can do what the customer asks. What Makes Miracle Ford and the Miracle Auto Group Different? John Haggard: 07:59 Every dealer is going to say we’re the best. We can finance everybody or most people, you need to come here. You won’t get a better deal, a better price, a better vehicle, better options anywhere else. So what would you say, what would you tell people if they said, “you know what Amy, I keep hearing that same thing. Everybody says they’re the best”. What about Miracle Ford in terms of why really they should deal with the Miracle Auto Group? Amy Bryant: 08:22 John, I have to tell you, in my eight years in this business, I love the principles that Miracle Auto Group stands for. I have worked in the car business for some of the biggest corporations for six years, which is very long time being in a corporation, in the car business. This company is different. I can’t express enough the gratitude that I have. Like Mr Galvin saying on the podcast, episode 1, he actually spoke about the fact of we’re not trying to get people, on the front end part of things. That is huge. He literally has created an atmosphere that the customers are welcomed here and I think I just have the best team and coworkers in the world. So yeah. What Questions Did I Not Ask That You Would Like For People To Know John Haggard: 09:05 All right. Talking to Amy Bryant, she’s the Business Development Manager at Miracle Ford in Gallatin. You know, we covered a lot of topics. Is there any one question I did not ask you Amy, when it comes to purchasing or leasing a vehicle, that people either ask or that you would want them to know? Amy Bryant: 09:23 I have to tell you, a lot of times working in this, one thing is… A dealership will do anything just to get you in the door. And that’s not how we are here. My team, myself, we refuse to do that. If a customer calls about a vehicle and it is no longer available, we are immediately going to call that customer, let them know that that vehicle is no longer available and give them an option. I just think that it’s very important to always be up front. John Haggard: 09:51 But you can also get vehicles from other places where someone could still come deal with Miracle. Right? Amy Bryant: 09:58 We sure can. We have many outlets that we use as a resource to ensure that our customer gets the vehicle that they want each and every time, whether it is a new vehicle or a pre-owned. And I think that’s very important for them to know. What Do You Like To Do Outside Of Work John Haggard: 10:12 All right. So tell us what you do, Amy. What your hobbies are, the most fun things you like to do when you’re not working? Amy Bryant: 10:19 You mean I don’t work? Actually, I’m in my second year of college, so I’m a full time student. So my quiet time has now become my study time. John Haggard: 10:31 Well what are you studying? Amy Bryant: 10:32 Probably Business Management is where I’m going to continue to go. But I love to get on my adult children’s nerves all the time. And my oldest son is actually a high school teacher back home in Baltimore, Maryland. John Haggard: 10:44 Oh Wow. Amy Bryant: 10:45 And I have found that he is now my tutor. My daughter’s here yet. My daughter’s here in Tennessee with me. And every Sunday that is my husband and I’s day where it doesn’t matter what’s going on in the crazy world. We every Sunday reserve that time for us just for church and lunch. So it’s mostly just with my family, John Haggard: 11:04 That’s good. And they say what goes around comes around. So, like mother, like son. Now son’s tutoring mom. That’s pretty cool! That’s pretty cool. Amy Bryant: 11:12 Absolutely. Yes. I know… sometimes it’s quite humbling, but I have to say I’m very proud of them. Closing John Haggard: 11:18 That’s great. Well, thanks Amy. Amy Bryant, folks. That’s the Business Development Manager for Miracle Ford. You can join us again right here for other topics on the podcast throughout each month. Our goal is to show you the best ways to purchase, maintain and accessorize your new or preowned vehicle. Then how to sell your vehicle for the highest resale value possible, when you’re ready to do it. And don’t forget, we’ve also posted a transcript of each podcast right here on the website so that you can easily refer to it, pull out the information that you would like to have at your fingertips. I’m your host John Haggard, and we will see you next time.
The Bignalls and I bicker about the history of Mission CrossFit, changes in CrossFit as a whole, challenges in running a gym and working with your spouse, and the changes in competing in the CrossFit Games. Bio: Ladies First! Meagan Bignall: I was born and raised in Houston, and have two amazing dogs. My main focus as a child was gymnastics, and I spent ages 5-14 competing. In college, I was re-introduced to working out and began going to the local Bally’s 3 times a week. In 2010 a fellow gymnastics coach asked me to accompany her at a CrossFit trial class. After rolling my eyes over the new fad, I told her I’d go. I’ve been hooked on CrossFit since April 2010 and haven’t looked back. I began coaching at P3 CrossFit in Houston in April 2014, but it was cut short when I made my big move to San Antonio. Luckily I was introduced to Mission in 2012, and knew exactly where my new CrossFit home would be. I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge while helping others meet their health and fitness goals. Drew Bignall: A Minnesota native, Drew grew up with a passion for all sports, having competed in almost every sport, but over time concentrated his efforts towards baseball. He was a competitive gymnast for 8 years and feels that was the best choice his parents could have made for him from an athletic background. Drew is a very ambitious and determined individual and truly believes that quitting is never an option. He played four years of varsity college baseball at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX before an injury stopped him from playing professionally after college. Since April of 2009, Drew has been an active competitor and avid participant in CrossFit Competitions. He has been CrossFitting since November 2008 and plans to continue for the rest of his life. Being a CrossFit coach means more than just coaching to him. He instills those methodologies by “Constantly Varied, Functional Movements, Performed at High-Intensities” to everyone who walks through his door and strives to see them succeed in their own ways. He is constantly driven to learn new fitness techniques and styles, as well as search for up-to-date health and wellness information that he can share with him members. Drew has also been developing a Strength and Conditioning Program based around Powerlifting, Olympic Lifting, CrossFit and overall athletic ability since November of 2010. It is utilized by many of the Mission CrossFit SA’s coaches and athletes who have goals of competing. Drew loves to coach and will teach his program to anyone who is willing to learn, wants to have a true competitive edge over their competition and has the drive to perform at their highest level possible.

Since April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, we wanted to close it out by celebrating one of our favorite Michael J Fox movies: The Frighteners, Fox's last stunt-heavy project. It's also the movie Peter Jackson used as a proof-of-concept for the talents of New Zealand's film-making scene. Which. Well, we know how that turned out... Soak in the joy of watching him run an exorcism protection racket and making the main character of this movie waaaaaaay more charming than he has any right to be. And then Jeffrey Combs walks in from a different movie entirely and it's AWESOME. Plus, Roger Ebert hated it. What more do you need? CONTENT WARNING for brief discussion of sexual abuse. For this week’s episode, we are joined by Olivier Rikken, Director of blockchain and smart contracts at Axveco– a consultancy firm based out of the Netherlands focusing on sustainable innovation. Olivier last spoke to us in April regarding smart contracts – this episode focuses on the legal aspects of blockchain and smart contracts. Since April last year, Olivier has been involved in a wide range of blockchain related projects which include being part of the ISO World Standards working group on smart contracts. In addition to his role as a start-up coach for blockchain-enabled start-ups within and outside the Netherlands, Olivier is part of the governance group for the Dutch Blockchain Coalition and is a guest lecturer at three universities in the Netherlands. Blockchain in two minutes According to Olivier, blockchain is a decentralised database – a shared administration system where everyone who wishes to join may do so and participate (reading, writing and validating content.) There is no need for a trusted 3rdparty to monitor the database. Publication of the “Legal Aspects of Blockchain” Olivier has recently co-authored a book titled ‘Legal Aspects of Blockchain’ – this book was a product of a collaboration between the Dutch government and the UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services.) Olivier was involved in a working group that published a report on the legality of smart contracts in December 2017. This report drew the attention of the UN and Olivier was subsequently approached with a proposition to co-author a book on smart contracts together with experts from institutions such as MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore), MIT amongst others. A powerful opening “The fourth Industrial Revolution is underway and organizations in the public domain on both national and international front are being confronted with numerous new technologies” – Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Netherlands. Olivier explains that in the past few years, we have witnessed several technological developments that could potentially disrupt industries as we know them today. An industrial revolution is characterized by a change in the way things are organized and work is carried out. For example, decentralisation (through blockchain and DLT) can allow us to design new ecosystems and processes – advances in blockchain combined with developments in big data analytics, artificial intelligence and IoT indicate that we may be on the brink of major changes. Looking at blockchain from a regulatory angle Olivier believes that prior to forming regulations on a new technology, it is extremely important for law-makers, politicians and lawyers to understand the technology and its implications. Using the example of GDPR and blockchain – he highlights that there is a lot of concern regarding GDPR compliance issues with blockchain. However, as he points out, there isn’t a single version of blockchain (public v/s private, permissioned v/s permission-less etc.) Formulating regulations concerning blockchains is particularly challenging– though regulations tend to be as general as possible – it is extremely important for regulators to address different types of blockchain to promote enterprise adoption and increase confidence. Thus, Olivier feels regulations (today) cannot be general since there are very specific questions that need answering. Olivier raises some questions (that are still being discussed) from a regulatory perspective such as who is accountable for blockchain, how is privacy guaranteed and where/how can traditional jurisdictions apply (if at all)? How will legal jurisdictions apply? During the discussion, Olivier points out that there is still a lack of consensus regarding which legal jurisdiction applies in cases where transactions take place between parties in different legal jurisdictions. Olivier provides the example of Swarm City,

In 2014, Sharon Daphna and her partner, Gabriel Lazar discovered that orgone energy was the solution to ending the geoengineered skies overhead and dampen the 4G & 5G EMF, based on the work of Wilhelm Reich. Since April of that year, they have been making orgone energy devices called orgonite, and as of the summer of 2018, have distributed roughly 6000 tactical orgonite pieces (towerbusters) throughout California, the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. On her blog site, Somewhere Under the Chembow, Sharon documents their work with photos, descriptions, and weather reports, including the official end of the engineered California drought on April 7, 2017. Since April of 1998, Orlando Magic fans have enjoyed the high energy and enthusiasm of play-by-play man Dennis Neumann. Neumann served as the host of the Orlando Magic Radio Network for eight seasons before taking over radio play-by-play duties for David Steele, who slid into the TV play-by-play position. Neumann has brought us a host of iconic moments in Magic history, and has yet to miss a game in his tenure.
Chris Dees is a native Texan that, like most, grew up in a lower class family that split apart soon after he became a teenager. He bounced back and forth from parent to parent until he moved out on his own at 16. He started working full time and went to school part-time... His grandparents ran a family business taking care of oil and gas wells. At 17 he quit school completely to go work in their business driving my grandfather around after he shattered both of his legs in an auto accident. He worked for them for about 2 years before he finally decided to follow in my grandfather's footsteps by enlisting in the U.S. Army, particularly the Cavalry. He became a father, at 20 years old, five days before he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. About 10 days into my deployment, he received a Red Cross Message saying that his son ways in ICU and probably not going to make it. While en route back to the United States he learned that his son's mother and a guy she started dating were arrested for child abuse/endangerment in connection with his son's injury. He later returned to Iraq to finish my deployment. After returning home from Iraq he was able to secure sole custody of his son and their lives moved on. In 2010 he married the woman of his dreams. They now have two beautiful children, his son(now 10) and his daughter(now 6). In order to support his family in the best way possible and to give them the things that my wife did not have growing up, he decided to re-enter the oilfield and make it a career. He worked his way up into Operations Management and got tired of working for others, as well as, being away from my family 300+ days of the year. He left his career working for others in December of 2017 to take some "time off". In January of 2018, he started a "Consulting Firm", Recon Production Services, with himself and his brother-in-law to provide labor for existing flowback and well-testing companies. He worked 12-hour shifts doing manual labor and made sales calls on his 12 hours off. In April of 2018, after almost losing everything he had worked so hard for, all of the grinding he had done finally paid off. Literally, overnight he went from 3 contractors(including himself) working to 20+ contractors on jobs. Since April, their monthly sales have been about $250,000, which, crushed their 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year goals. They are currently re-writing their goals for these milestones and expanding into other areas of service. If you enjoyed this episode please Comment Share and leave a review... 8: The Senior Helpline: Addressing the Unique Needs of Senior Investors “Can we make a difference? Can this actually work?” Those are the questions FINRA’s Yvette Panetta and her team asked themselves when they launched the Securities Helpline for Seniors. Three years later, the answer to both questions is clearly yes. Since April 2015, FINRA’s Senior Helpline has helped nearly 13,000 senior investors with everything from simple questions, such as “how do I find out more information about my broker,” to serious concerns, including potential broker misconduct and allegations of fraud. Yvette Panetta, Brooke Hickman and Robert Mascio share how they helped develop the Senior Helpline into more than just another call center, but rather into a valuable resource for senior investors and FINRA member firms alike. Since April is sexual assault awareness month, I thought it would be awesome to speak to some of my friends about their experiences with assault/rape. (I still find it hard to use the "R" word) In this episode, my friend Amber and I share with each other our experience moving through our assaults and the tools we used and things we did that helped us get to the other side. It was a really incredible experience for me to sit down with Amber and I hope you'll feel that too. As a PSA I should mention: We are NOT professionals (Counselors, therapists, etc). Amber and I met on a photoshoot she was producing. She's a woman's health advocate (she spoke on behalf of Planned Parenthood in California's capital, Sacramento), she worked at Vogue, is mom to a teeny weeny pug named Mabel, a Harvard Graduate, and a sexual assault survivor. Listen to us talk about having PTSD while being intimate after the fact, trying to socialize and make new friends, discussing (or not) your assault with a new partner, abortions, and salads vs sandwiches. Welcome! Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Nelan, from the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, https://www.facebook.com/79th.IBCT/ shares his experiences, and gives us a unique perspective of Atlantic Resolve. Atlantic Resolve is a demonstration of continued U.S. commitment to collective security through a series of actions designed to reassure NATO allies and partners of America's dedication to enduring peace and stability in the region in light of the Russian intervention in Ukraine. Since April 2014, Army Europe has led land forces efforts on behalf of the U.S. military, by conducting continuous, enhanced multinational training and security cooperation activities with allies and partners in eastern Europe. These multinational training and security cooperation activities are taking place in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. These training events improve interoperability, strengthen relationships and trust among allied armies, contribute to regional stability, and demonstrate U.S. commitment to NATO. Atlantic Resolve demonstrates the U.S. commitment to the security of NATO allies on air, land and at sea. To ensure its own security, NATO must have strong, committed and capable allies, which is why the United States has fought, exercised and trained with our European allies for the past 70 years. The U.S.-European strategic partnership is built on a foundation of shared values, experiences and commitment to a Europe that is stable and prosperous. https://www.facebook.com/USarmy/

For the past couple months, I've been toying around with a new app and website called for everything from sleep to focus to creativity. Frankly, I have no clue how it works, but it can knock me out like a baby for sleep, especially for napping or when I wake up in the middle of the night, it puts me directly into "The Zone" when I'm writing fiction or reading, and when I play it on an airplane I doze off like a baby. I do know that it is far different than binaural beats and white noise, but know little else about the science behind , so for for today's episode, I managed to get the minds behind on the podcast to explain how you can use sound waves and artificial intelligence for sleep, focus, creativity and beyond. During today's podcast, I interview Junaid Kalmadi, the CEO Co-Founder of Brain.fm, along with Adam Hewett, the mastermind behind the sound innovation and technology, and during our discussion, you'll discover: Adam has been innovating with audio and brain stimulation for 14 years. Prior to brain.fm, Adam invented the first research focused entrainment software used by auditory neuroscientists and research labs around the world. Mind WorkStation (brain.fm’s predecessor) remains the gold standard for auditory stimulation and branches of neuroscience. He holds a patent on a method of his own invention for embedding brainwave stimulation into audio among others pending. Junaid specializes in transporting innovation breakthroughs made in R&D to a consumer product experience that's easy for any human to use. Since April 2014, Junaid lead the company to growing to 300k+ users, 3 to 13 people in team size, published 2 pilot studies from respected neuroscientists, and featured on Inc Magazine, Guardian, Newsweek, New York Observer, Futurism. Entrepreneur Magazine, Forbes, Vice, TechCrunch, Mashable, etc. Brain.fm also partnered with the team USA Olympic Wrestling team to help their insomnia & performance anxiety during preparation for the Rio Olympics in 2016. Their advisory board consists of leading auditory neuroscientists, notable serial entrepreneurs and angel investors. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is BrainFM...[8:45] -How music can create neuronal oscillations in your brain...[13:00] -Why listening to Bach or Beethoven for long periods of time can actually distract and "stress" your brain...[19:00] -How the music and soundtracks used in brain.fm is different than binaural beats (and the unfortunate reality of binaural beats research)...[ 25:30] -The fascinating artificial intelligence software that Adam invented to use "note-bots" for creating music for sleep, focus and creativity...[32:10] -Whether any actual studies exist on the use of something like brain.fm to changing brain wave states...[44:15] -The best kind of headphones to use with brain.fm...[50:45] -And much more! Intro Hi everyone! Welcome to Episode 21 of Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who loves middle grade books! I am Corrina Allen - a teacher, a mom, and a big podcast fan. And I’ll tell you - I have been absolutely sucked into the new STown podcast for the past week! And have probably spend too much time and stayed up far too late looking at pictures of hedge mazes, sundials, and antique clocks. So, I know you like podcasts - definitely go listen to STown. Since April is National Poetry month, our show today is all about celebrating the power of poetry! I’ll share with you a couple poetry resources to help you enjoy poetry more with your students and kids, and then chat about some fabulous books - from picture books to poetry anthologies to novels in verse. Main Topic - Celebrating the Power of Poetry I will straight up tell you that I was slow to appreciate poetry in the way it really deserves. I was always a voracious reader even as a kid, but I rarely ever picked up any poetry when left to my own devices. I guess I always thought of it as a complicated puzzle or containing some secret message that I was just too obtuse to figure out. I even had this ridiculous idea that all poetry was romantic. Yeah - I know - WRONG! So, I have been on a mission lately to shed my own misconceptions and make SURE that I am not passing those along to my own children or my own students. It is still very much a work in progress for me, but I thought today I’d share with you a few ideas about how to include more poetry in the lives of your kids - not only during National Poetry Month, but all year long. Rethinking Poetry First off, I think that rethinking reading poetry is the biggest step. Helping kids understand that poetry can be about ANYTHING (not just love) is a major step. The best way to to do this? Start by reading lots of varieties of poetry with them. I know we are all pressed for time, but reading a short poem every day (or even start with every week!) would take less than a minute and can often be done in those “gap times” like waiting in the hallway or waiting for the bus to arrive. (And later on, I’ll share with you some places to get those poems.) Also, I used to think that as a teacher, I would have to hammer the heck out of a poem and make sure my students had yanked that thing apart and knew the theme, the rhyme pattern, the symbols, the point of view of the author and on and on and on until… well, it just wasn’t enjoyable anymore. For me or my students! The event that recently cemented for me the fact that teaching poetry doesn’t have to be like that was Laura Shovan’s live Facebook Event hosted by The Nerdy Book Club. It was called “It’s National Poetry Month: Let’s Teach Poetry!” and you can find an archive of that event through their facebook page and I’ll also include a direct link to it in our show transcript. So anyway - Laura Shovan is a poet-in-the-schools for the Maryland State Arts Council’s Artist-in-Education program and the author of the novel in verse The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary. In this video, she walks through how to teach the poem “Weather” by Eve Merriam. The whole thing is worth checking out, but I just wanted to share with you a few highlights: Read the poem aloud and ask students what THEY notice, what stands out to them, what got them thinking or feeling. And every time I have done this over the past week, my students will catch aspects of the poem I would never have considered. I love the advice of having students take the conversational lead. Reinforce the vocabulary of poetry naturally through the conversation around the poems, rather than a separate stand alone lesson. Incorporating terms like “couplet” and “stanza” into the discussion can save time and solidify their meaning for kids. The idea of poetry as layers - layers of sound, of story, of point of view. And how reading a poem several times allows you (and your kids!) to discover more within those multiple readings. And Laura Shovan makes this wonderful analogy of a poem as a waterfall - some students are going to want to jump into the water and experience it with all their senses, some are science minded and might want to take samples to examine and pick apart under a microscope, and some students want to stand back admire the beauty of that waterfall with awe and wonder. And all of those responses are are just fine. And we don’t have to do every single one of them every time we read a poem together. If you want to learn more, check out Laura’s website at www.LauraShovan.com - Another fantastic resource that links reading and writing poetry is Kwame Alexander’s Page-to-Stage Writing Workshop. And I highly recommend this if you want to harness the power of poetry to boost the level of writing excitement with your kids. This is a teacher’s guide that will get your kids writing, publishing, and presenting their poetry - and the best part is that it’s not JUST another book on teaching poetry. It includes videos of Kwame Alexander - both for teachers and for your students to watch. And if you’ve ever had the chance to hear him speak, you know the energy he brings. It’s like having a Newbery-Award winning author right in your classroom giving you a mini-lesson on poetry. Actually it’s not LIKE that, it actually IS that! Absolutely check that out! I’ll close by quoting a bit from Kylene Beers’ forward of Page-to-Stage, “Poetry - what I’ll call the neglected genre - draws us into ourselves as it simultaneously lets us give back to the world a fresh understanding , a new vision, a re-vision of one moment. Kwame puts it better when he explains that poetry lets us ‘write our own journeys, find our own voices.’” So I’m excited and inspired to include more poetry in my classroom and get kids writing more. As always, I would love to hear what you are doing to foster a love of poetry with your students and kids. You can tag me on Twitter, Instagram, and now Facebook - our handle is @books_between or email me at booksbetween@gmail.com and I’d love to hear and share your ideas. Book Talk - Fabulous Poetry Books & Novels in Verse In this part of the show, I chat about books centered around a theme and of course this week is all about fantastic poetry books, anthologies, and novels in verse for middle grade readers. And - since National Poem in Your Pocket Day is Thursday, April 27th - this will give you some awesome options for you and your students to tuck in those pockets. Poetry Books Bravo! Poems About Amazing Hispanics by author Margarita Engle with illustrations by Rafael Lopez. I really love this book - the drawings are fantastic and bold and each poem is from the point of view of the person being featured so it really feels personal. One Last Word: Wisdom from the Harlem Renaissance the latest by Nikki Grimes which is a collection of her original poetry interspersed with classic poetry of the Harlem Renaissance. Grimes is amazing - just go ahead and get all the Nikki Grimes - you can’t go wrong with her work! Speaking of can’t go wrong poets, Kwame Alexander has two new poetry picture book collections out. The first is called Animal Ark: Celebrating our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures and features photographs of endangered species. This one good for young readers as well as older kids. Then he’s also collaborated with some other poets (Chris Colderley and Marjory Wentworth along with artist Ekua Holmes to put together a beautiful collection of poems celebrating poets called Out of Wonder. Another poet to look for is Lee Bennett Hopkins - his work is simply outstanding. I love his general collections but his themed books are really cool. Check out My America: A Poetry Atlas of the United States - a collection of fifty poems celebrating various regions in the country. Or Marvelous Math - a collection of math themed poems, or Spectacular Science - a book full of poems on all sorts of science topics. What is cool about these books is that if you have them on hand, you can easily flip and find a poem that relates to a subject you are studying in class. A poetry break during Math or Science? Yes, please! And if you are looking for something clever and funny, take a look at Keep a Pocket in Your Poem by J. Patrick Lewis. They take classic poems and pair them with a parody poem. So for example, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” is paired with “Stopping by Fridge on a Hungry Evening” . It’s cute, funny, and may even inspire some of your kids to give a parody poem a try! And if you want to enjoy some excellent poetry with a jazzy, hip hop flair - please, please go snag a copy of Hip Hop Speaks to Children: a celebration of poetry with a beat. It’s edited by Nikki Giovanni and includes a CD with many of the authors reading their poems - including Eloise Greenfield, Gary Soto, Langston Hughes, James Berry - and so, so many more. A couple things I really loved - one, they make the explicit connection between music, lyrics, and poetry and include lots of poems that we might originally view simply as songs. Like “Rapper’s Delight”! And Queen Latifah’s “Ladies First”! It’s so, so good! And secondly, some of the tracks include the authors introducing their poem and giving you a little background. For instance, before Pedro Pietri reads “Love Poem for My People”, I was really stuck by how he mentioned that he wrote it many years ago and is STILL working on it. Powerful, powerful messages for kids - you definitely want this one on hand! Novels in Verse: Well, you can’t talk about novels in verse without mentioning the amazing Sharon Creech. There are of course Love That Dog and Hate That Cat - perennial classics in any classroom or library. But, I want to give a plug for her latest novel, called Moo. It’s the story of twelve -year-old Reena and her seven-year-old brother, Luke who are suddenly uprooted from their life in New York City and wind up moving to very rural Maine, and reluctantly trying to bond with a super ornery cow. There were certain aspects that reminded me a bit of Home of the Brave. I think those two would make a great novel-in-verse pairing. And of course, I would be remiss If I didn’t mention Kwame Alexander’s two novels in verse - The Crossover and Booked. I feel like I have gushed so much about those two books on this podcast and how much students love them that I am almost risking overdoing it. So, you already know they are amazing, right? Also previously mentioned on the podcast, but definitely need to be included on this list are Ellie Terry’s Forget Me Not, which is a novel that is half verse / half prose from two points of view. If you want to know more about that novel, I went into more depth in the last show which was Episode 20. And in Episode #8, I featuring Laura Shovan’s The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary, which is fantastic not only for the story but because it has dozens of poetry prompts right in the back. LOVE it! Another author that writes poetry for kids across a wide range of ages is Nikki Grimes. I already mentioned her picture book work, but her novels Words With Wings and Garvey’s Choice are phenomenal. And accessible to kids who might find the brief poems and open space of each page really appealing. They are quick but powerful reads. A short poem, a short story, can pack a lot of punch. And of course, Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming and her earlier book Locomotion and so many others are written with such passion and love that they stay with you, long, long after you’ve set aside those books. A couple novels in verse that I haven’t read yet but have been bubbling up are The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney and Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. I keep bumping into rave reviews and reflections on these two books - argh - I think I just need to take a reading sabbatical and work through my To Be Read pile. Wouldn’t that be nice? Well - I could go on and on - and I know I’ve missed a lot on this list, but I do need to cut myself off at some point. But, that leaves the door open for YOU! What poetry books or novels in verse are your favorites and why do you love them? I’ll open some threads on our various social media sites and let’s continue the conversation there! Closing Okay - that wraps up our show this week. If you have topic or a book you think we should cover, please let us know. Since April, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, alongside other Native American tribes, have been protesting the construction of Energy Transfer Partners’ Dakota Access Pipeline. The tribe claims that this pipeline, which will stretch from North Dakota to Illinois by way of their land, will be a threat to their drinking water, sacred land and the future of their children. They also claim that they were not consulted before the approval of the project. On Lawyer 2 Lawyer, hosts J. Craig Williams and Bob Ambrogi join Monte Mills, co-director of the Margery Hunter Brown Indian Law Clinic at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana and attorney Jeffrey Haas, who is presently working with the Water Protector Legal Collective representing the water protectors at Standing Rock. They will take a look at the protesting of the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock and discuss the legal issues, history of land and people, the protest, the history and impact of the pipeline, the recent re-routing news, and what the future holds. Monte Mills is co-director of the Margery Hunter Brown Indian Law Clinic at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana. He teaches a variety of Indian law courses and works with clinical students on a range of legal matters in the Indian Law Clinic. Prior to joining the faculty at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana, Monte was the Director of the Legal Department for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe in Colorado. Jeffrey Haas is founding partner of the People's Law Office in Chicago and defended Mora County, New Mexico, which was sued by a subsidiary of Shell Oil for passing an ordinance banning fracking. Jeffrey recently wrote a piece for Truthout titled “Lawyer's View: Recent Days at Standing Rock.” He is presently member of the Camp's legal team, presently working with the Water Protector Legal Collective representing the water protectors at Standing Rock. Since April of 2015, the narrative of the Baltimore uprising has been inextricably woven into the fabric of a broader national conversation about how police relate to communities of color, tempered by more deaths of Black and Brown people at the hands of police, targeted murders of law enforcement officers, and an acrimonious Presidential campaign. This morning, reporter Mary Wiltenburg brings us a Sound Montage from Baltimore’s West Side. Police and protesters: Voices from the Uprising. Then, our Living Questions Series continues with the Rev. Dr. Robert Franklin , the President Emeritus of Morehouse College and Professor of Moral Leadership at Emory University. Followed by Baker Artist Award winner Todd Marcus on the joys of the bass clarinet.

Since April is Financial Literacy Month and tax time has passed, let's begin focusing on our finances for the remainder of 2015. I know you have been putting your receipts into a shoebox or an accordion file, so let’s start recording, tracking and managing those expenses so we can make some basic financial decisions like; what vacation(s) can we schedule this year? Which expense(s) can we cut back on to start saving towards our year-end-goal? Let me share with you this awesome tool that you can create by attending my signature Microsoft Excel training program called the "Manage Your Personal Finances" or MYPF Learning Program. The MYPF Learning Program takes a total of eight hours to complete. During the training you will learn various Microsoft Excel functions and concepts that will provide you with knowledge that can be used in other aspects of your life (personally, professionally, or academically). The program is now being offered in a virtual platform, over the Internet, and it is designed for the beginner or novice computer user. All that you need is the Microsoft Office Excel application and an Internet connection. The goal of the program is to help individuals become more "efficient, effective and productive" users of technology. Join me during the broadcast to learn more about this simple and easy-to-use tool that you create as the result of completing the MYPF Learning Program.

Dave was born in 1965 in Lowell Massachusetts, where he still resides. As a young child, the television show “In Search Of” with Leonard Nemoy sparked his interest in Cryptozoology. After a longtime interest and reading information on the internet in the 90’s his eyes were opened to the fact that it wasn’t just a West Coast phenomena. The book Monsters of the North Woods by Paul Bartholomew really hit home and he realized that New York and New England has had a long history amongst native people and early explorers involving the Sasquatch in the Northeast. In 2005 Dave went from being an avid reader to someone who wanted to be more hands on so he attended a BFRO expedition in Whitehall, NY. After talking to several local eye witnesses, one being a police officer, about their experiences, he was completely hooked. This started his love of the outdoors having never experienced hiking and camping growing up in a city environment. As an adult Dave was able to travel the East Coast, where he started investigating the sighting reports in his area. After the BFRO Expedition he joined the NESRA Research group and attended several expeditions with them in the years since. One of them being part of the group that was used in a Monsterquest episode “Bigfoot in New York”. In 2008, Dave attended one of the first expeditions that included several different research groups of the East Coast in Virginia. These groups investigated continuously for two weeks straight. Since then, he has been to the West Coast multiple times. Dave has made great friends from his time in California and Washington State as well as many more all across the country. Since April 2012 he has been researching with Squatchachusetts where he is currently active in Massachusetts.

Christmas comes early to all you loyal Succotashians: We're going to start getting our episodes out more quickly! Since April, Producer/Engineer Joe Paulino and yours truly have been averaging a new 'sode about once every two or three weeks - sometimes even longer. (Hey, we gotta work for a living, just like you!) BUT we've hit on a new format that should allow us to crank out more Succotash more often. By featuring interviews every other episode — with comedians, podcasters, comedian/podcasters, and other folk from the business of show — it really saves us production time. (People think doing a show featuring clips from other shows is easy, but it's very labor-intensive and we don't have interns, segment producers or anyone else running around here screening podcasts.) In between those shows, we'll still feature our usual crop o' podcasts, but this will allow us to get more shows out to the listeners a lot more frequently. Fred Stoller & Mitchell Our interview this episode is with comedian/actor Fred Stoller, who you may recognize from his many appearances on TV and the occasional film. In addition, he does quite a lot of voiceover work which we talk about in the course of the interview. Check out Fred's movie Fred And Vinnie and you can also click over to Atom.com to see current webisodes of his web series The Gate Show. We had time to feature just one podcast this episode: • The Comedy Point Soul Joel heads up a crew on The Comedy Point that broadcasts live once a week — Tuesday nights, 5-8 PM, EST – in Philly and South Jersey on 1460 AM. The show then podcasts for the rest of the week. • Cupla This week we also feature some music from someone other than our crack music director Scott Carvey. It's a group called Cupla out of Canada (and I just realized that it's pronounced "coop-la", and NOT "cup-lah", as I pronounced in the episode. Sorry, guys!!!) and we play their single I'm Going during a break in our interview with Fred. • Burst O' Durst Finally, we have a great entry from regular contributor and political comedy assassin Will Durst presenting his Top Ten Comedy News Stories of 2011. That's going to do it for our epi15 this time around. I'm off on vacation through the rest of the year, so we may not have any fresh Succotash until the end of the year...we'll see if I can find enough motivation while in Hawaii to pull one together. If we don't, have a happy holiday! (And if you're looking for that perfect gift idea, why not pass the Succotash?) — Marc Hershon
The electricity industry is a significant area in which policy changes could have an impact on environmental sustainability. In this audio lecture, Stanford Professor Frank Wolak considers how different utility rate structures might accelerate or delay the vision of an intelligent energy supply/demand nexus in the home. He discusses the inevitability of –– and political barriers to –– dynamic pricing, outlining the role of hourly and critical peak plans in motivating customers to reduce their consumption. He also talks about how renewable energy should be priced to encourage investments in energy storage technologies. Wolak was talking at the 2010 Climate Policy Instruments in the Real World conference, an event convened by the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD) at Stanford University. Frank A. Wolak is the Holbrook Working Professor of Commodity Price Studies in the Economics Department and the director of the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development at Stanford University. His fields of research are industrial organization and empirical economic analysis. Since April 1998, he has been chairman of the Market Surveillance Committee (MSC) of the California Independent System Operator. In this capacity, he has testified numerous times at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and at various Committees of the US Senate and House of Representatives on issues relating to market monitoring and market power in electricity markets. Wolak has worked on the design and regulatory oversight of electricity markets internationally in Europe, Australia/Asia, Latin America and the United States. He received an SM in applied mathematics and PhD in economics from Harvard University. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/environmental_sustainability_in_electricity
Adrian Butler is chairman of the World Fire Safety Foundation. The Foundation is a non profit global organisation, dedicated to saving lives by exposing the defective nature of the *type* of smoke alarms installed in homes around the world and promoting the safe and affordable alternatives.Overwhelming evidence proves that ionization smoke alarms that use radio active components are not safe because they do not detect smouldering fires, the type of fire that commonly kills. The Foundation's website provides evidence of fire-fighter and scientific testing that exposes the existing flawed standards testing, that has allowed ionization smoke alarms to be certified as safe and sold to the public for over forty years. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people have been injured or killed globally as a direct result of ionization alarms failing to sound a timely warning.Since April 2004 new legislation requires that certain Australian commercial buildings must install photoelectric smoke alarms in all sleeping areas and exit paths. Despite Standards Australia having now acknowledged that the testing of ionization smoke alarms is flawed, the change to the standard affecting homes continues to be blocked, without justification, putting Australian and New Zealand lives at needless risk.
