Driving Kia's EV6 SUV today. The Kia EV6 comes in four models. I drove the EV6GT-line dual motor all-wheel-drive at $87,590 – powered by a 77.4kWh battery theGT-line with two electric motors and weighing 100 kilos heavier to the rear drivemodels provides 239kW and 605Nm of torque. Delivering a driving range of484km which I found most accurate with a mix of urban and country driving.Energy consumption varied and ran from around 15kWh/100km to18.5kWh/100km. Charging, on a standard 7kW home charger around 71/2 hours,on a 350kW fast charger if you can find one not in use around 20 minutes. The KiaEV6 styling a standout, sharp edge styling that gives it a premium feel and in myeyes it's the best-looking EV on the market. Large well shod 20-inch alloy wheelsare tucked right into the body's corners provide a very roomy interior with greatseats. Despite an impressive dash and instrumentation, the interior is somewhatbland in terms of finishes. Premium specified however with all the driving aidsand safety elements and Kia's 7-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. The driveexperience of the Kia EV6 GT-line will impress most drivers. More drive details inmy next segment. I'm David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURES FOR AUGUST 2023For the first time, in a long time, the new car registration overall figure for August is close to those of the before times, being just under seven thousand less than 2019 numbers. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped to a 20.1% market share for the month, unfortunately the year to date is still stuck in the 16s. The SMMT make it very clear they desperately need the Government to reveal what the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate will actually be as, astonishingly, they have not revealed what it will actually entail. Irish technology company evHACS has announced the launch of its innovative new charging system for electric vehicles (“EVs”) which it says will help to solve the challenge of charging solutions for electric-powered vehicle charging in the coming years. The company seeks to bring together three sectors: the electric vehicle charging ecosystem, the connected autonomous vehicle environment and the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. evHACS is an Irish Company supported by Enterprise Ireland. The amount of EV chargers required by 2030 is significant according to multiple sources. Ireland had 1,900 public EV chargers in 2021, this needs to increase to 30,000 by 2030 according to reports; the UK had 25,000 public EV chargers installed in 2021 and there needs to be 280,000 to 480,000 by 2030; the European Court of Auditors says there are 220,000 public chargers in Europe in 2020 which must grow to 1 million by 2025 and 3 million by 2030; EY, a consultancy, estimates that Europe will need 65 million chargers in total to fuel 130 million EV by 2035. Solution Is the charging industry capable of providing the number of chargers required? The jury is out. However, there is an industry which can help. evHACS? (short for electric vehicle charging heat pump air conditioning system) is a business with a patent-pending technology that uniquely combines electric car charging with heat pumps, air conditioners and refrigeration units. The technology seeks to contribute to lowering carbon home and commercial premises emissions by integrating two technologies thereby: lowering installation costs; lowering running costs; dynamically managing power consumption in the home; lowering CO² output and energy consumption The Heating, Ventilation Air Conditioning (“HVAC”) industry is expected to enter a period of exceptional growth over the next decade. The International Energy Agency (“IEA”) say they expect heat pump units installed globally to grow from 180 million units to a stock of over 600 million units by 2030. The stock of air conditioning units are also expected to increase from 2 billion units currently to almost 3 billion units by 2030. evHACS seeks to show that the heat pump (and air conditioning unit) is the perfect unit to house an EV charger. The HVAC industry will work with evHACS to ensure that a proportion of units have the technology on board. The HVAC industry has the capability to significantly ameliorate the supply of EV chargers to satisfy the growing demand globally: targeting 5% of new HVAC units offering the technology it represents in excess of 2.1 million heat pump units and 50 million air conditioning units by 2030. Ireland is targeting 600,000 domestic heat pumps installed by 2030. The UK will grow the installation of electric heat pumps from 30,000 per year currently to 600,000 per year by 2028. COP26 has continued the pressure on all Governments to reduce carbon output through to 2040. The war in Ukraine has also heightened the necessity to present to market solutions which will lower oil and natural gas dependency. Jeff Aherne, CEO evHACS says: “evHACS technology is simplicity at its best: integrating a charger into a HVAC unit saves on separate installations of both a charger and an air conditioning unit saving time, money and personnel. In domestic situations where a heat pump is increasingly proving popular over natural gas and oil, it makes sense to have a charger integrated into the unit.” A domestic charger uses around 7kW of power and a heat pump uses up to 5kW depending on its size. A house typically has 12 to 16kW of power, so having both the heat pump and the charger running concurrently risks tripping the main breaker if other appliances are also switched on. Other manufacturers of chargers use load balancing to reduce the charge to the vehicle in order to stop the tripping and circuit failure. evHACS also balances. However, it uniquely balances “both” the heat pump and the charger introducing a fle...

Many said he wasn't going to win and he just needed to keep his nose clean and bring the car home. The returning masters would have this one sorted. Rovanperä didn't read that memo. As cars and reputations fell out of contention he kept it clean but also was very quick. In the end leaving everyone trailing behind him. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 1st November. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NON-TESLA SUPERCHARGER PILOT GOES LIVE IN NETHERLANDS - Today we are launching our Non-Tesla Supercharger pilot at 10 Supercharger locations in the Netherlands. - With this pilot, 10 stations are now accessible to Dutch Non-Tesla EV drivers via the Tesla app - More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide. - We're starting with a select number of sites so that we can review the experience, monitor congestion and assess feedback before expanding. Future sites will only be opened to Non-Tesla vehicles if there is available capacity. - As a Tesla driver you benefit from the seamless integration of charge post and vehicle, optimized route planning and battery pre-conditioning. With your Tesla, you'll also have access to the lowest Supercharger pricing. - Download the Tesla app (version 4.2.3 or higher) for iOS or Android and create a Tesla Account. Select 'Charge Your Non-Tesla' and find your Supercharger site. Add your payment method, plug-in your car, select a stall and tap 'Start Charging.' Select 'Stop Charging' to complete your session. - Pricing for Non-Tesla drivers reflects additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles. Rates vary by site, and you can view charging prices in the Tesla app. The per kWh price to charge can be lowered with a charging membership. - Certain Supercharger site layouts may not be suitable for some cars. Please do not obstruct other cars by parking over the lines if the cable cannot comfortably reach your car. When member BahamaTodd updated his MyChevrolet app to version 5.7.0, he clicked through to the Energy Assist page and found three GM electric vehicles listed, plus their estimated range figures on a 100% charge. One was the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt, rated for 259 miles, the second was the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, rated for 247 miles. The third was an unexpected entry, being the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, listed as able to go 334 miles on a full charge. - The figures for both Bolts are the official EPA estimates. The mileage figure for the Hummer is a mystery, as is why it's popped up here in the MyChevrolet app instead of the MyGMC app. The EPA hasn't certified the 2022 Hummer yet, so that's not the source. - With pre-production of the Edition 1 slated to begin at GM's Factory Zero any day now, answers shouldn't be long in coming. As we can see in the video shared by Len Devanna, Head of Digital Experience at Lucid (and re-uploaded on YouTube), about 20 Lucid Airs departed for a Lucid Rally. - Lucid will deliver 520 Dream Edition cars (in two specs - Range or Performance). Then, the less expensive Air Grand Touring, Air Touring and Air will follow. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544466/lucid-air-dream-edition-rally/ LUCID AIR SPECS REVEALED: 118 KWH DREAM PACK, 112 KWH GRAND TOURING - The limited Dream Edition version is equipped with a 118 kWh battery pack, featuring 22 modules totaling 6,600 cylindrical cells - The Grand Touring version has about a 6 kWh smaller battery - 112 kWh - We believe that those cells are supplied by Samsung SDI, Lucid's first supplier, announced in December 2016 (see the original press release here). In 2020, the company announced that the battery cells for "standard version" cars will be supplied by LG Chem's LG Energy Solution. - One of the Lucid's key elements is the 900 V battery architecture, which allows for increased efficiency. It also makes it easier to deliver up to around 300 kW of charging power, which allows it to take just about 20 minutes to replenish 300 miles of range. - The Lucid Air is the first high-end model that is expected to be sold in quite significant volumes, starting with 20,000 in 2022. In the 2023, it should be joined by an even higher-volume, large SUV - "Gravity." By 2025, both should be sold at over 120,000 per year (including 42,000 Air and 86,000 Gravity). - EPA range: Grand Touring (19") - 516 miles (830 km), Grand Touring (21") - 469 miles (755 km) - 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) timeDream Edition Performance (19") - 3.3 seconds Dream Edition Performance (21") - 3.0 seconds Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544455/lucid-air-118kwh-battery-112kwh/ NEW LONGER-RANGE MG ZS EV GOES ON SALE - Priced from £28,495 (incl. PiCG), the renewed model is available with a larger 72kWh Long Range battery, delivering up to 273 miles of range. That's a substantial increase over the outgoing model, which has a combined range of 163 miles. It comes with an onboard AC charger that enables up to 7kW fast charging or up to 76kW DC rapid charging, giving a 0-100% charge in as little as 42 minutes. - The updated MG ZS EV also features Vehicle-to-Load capability now as standard, enabling drivers to charge or power other external equipment, for example, an electric bike, using an accessory charging cable. - all models come with the new MG iSmart connectivity system, which offers connection via a smartphone app and enables a wide array of vehicle functions to be monitored remotely, including vehicle status and battery charge level. Drivers can stop and start charging, remotely lock and unlock the car, set the air conditioning and heating, and activate the windscreen demister. - The entry-level SE comes with auto air con, bi-function LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and push-button start, vehicle-to-load charging and 360-degree parking camera. - Trophy model, priced at £30,995 (incl. PiCG), adds a panoramic roof and leather-style seats, along with roof rails, heated front seats, electric driver's seat adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and wireless phone charging. - Trophy Connect, which adds iSmart with live services (weather, traffic and Amazon Prime) and is priced at £31,495 after PiCG. TESLA WILL HAVE TO SHIP ITS TEXAS-BUILT CARS OUT OF STATE TO SELL BACK TO RESIDENTS"This year, the Legislature convened Jan. 12 and will wrap up its work on May 31 before breaking until 2023. And it will do so without making a widely expected change to Texas’ auto dealer franchise laws that would finally allow Tesla to sell its cars—many of which will be built at its new Austin factory next year—directly to the public in the nation’s second-largest state." writes The Drive: "esla is on the verge of having to jump through the most ridiculous one yet: having to ship its Texas-built vehicles out of the state before it can sell (and ship) them back to Lone Star buyers. There’s not enough time left in the current legislative section to advance the bill that was supposed to avert that Kafkaesque outcome. This is going to happen unless Texas Governor Greg Abbott calls a special session specifically to debate this topic—extremely unlikely—or some arcane regulatory exemption can be crafted for Tesla in the months ahead. So how did we end up here?" https://www.thedrive.com/tech/40779/tesla-will-have-to-ship-its-texas-built-cars-out-of-state-to-sell-back-to-residents TESLA CASHING IN ON CHIPS"Trust Tesla and its chief Elon Musk to come up with a big idea for solving the current chip shortage. This one would only help Tesla itself — it is considering buying and operating a plant of its own, according to people familiar with the matter" writes the FT: "A cutting-edge semiconductor fab requires investment of up to $20bn and the intricacies of operating such plants are notoriously hard to master. Tesla is also pursuing a more practical idea of paying in advance to secure supplies. That’s a strategy already adopted by other companies." https://www.ft.com/content/d94d327e-6c3d-484c-b1d0-9c0ebfef606d TESLA POWERPACK BATTERY STEPS IN AFTER COAL PLANT EXPLODES IN AUSTRALIA"On Tuesday, an explosion at the Callide Power Station, a coal-fired power plant in central Queensland, Australia, resulted in mass power outages from the New South Wales (NSW) border to Cairns. More than 470,000 customers were affected, particularly as the explosion caused a cascading impact on the Queensland grid." says Teslarati: "This was when the Hornsdale Power Reserve, a massive Tesla Powerpack battery farm, stepped in. With its upgraded toolkit that was added when it was expanded into a 150MW/194MWh system, the massive battery was able to immediately respond to the widespread power interruptions." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-powerpack-battery-coal-plant-explosion-australia/ TESLA HAS INSTALLED OVER 200,000 POWERWALL HOME BATTERIES"Despite issues with its Solar Roof, Tesla's Powerwall has apparently been a hot-selling item over the last year. The company announced on Twitter that it has sold over 200,000 Powerwall units so far, around double the number it said it had sold at this time in 2020. " according to Engadget: "It could apparently be shipping even larger numbers if it could manufacture more of them. Tesla recently said during its first-quarter earnings call that it had a "multi-quarter backlog on Powerwall." It also announced in April that it would no longer sell its Solar Roof panels without a Powerwall unit, which ought to boost demand even further. Tesla recently unveiled the Powerwall+, an updated version that can supply up to 9.6kW of power, up from 5kW continuous and 7kW of peak output. Finance: "The move will result in a 50% reduction in models powered by fossil fuels, one of the people said, adding the strategy was approved by top management in March. While Hyundai did not specifically address a Reuters query on its plans for combustion engine models, it said in an email on Thursday that it was accelerating adoption of eco-friendly vehicles such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and battery EVs. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon PRODUCER TYLER SCHAEFER Welcome to a new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JOHN SCHROEDER From Peter Bryn: Greetings. In Washington State, the current legislative session will be considering a ban on ICE vehicle registrations for model years beyond 2030. This bill (House HB 1204 / Senate SB 5256) has been introduced and it's an opportunity for folks to contact their legislators to share their support. MERCEDES-BENZ EQA TO DEBUT ON JANUARY 20 "Mercedes-Benz has teased today a new image of the interior of the upcoming all-electric compact crossover/SUV EQA model, scheduled for the unveiling on January 20, 2020." says InsideEVs: "This new model (a sister model to GLA), is already in production at the Rastatt plant, Germany and should be available in the European dealerships as early as Spring 2021. In the future, it will be produced also at the Beijing plant, China (for the local market). Mercedes-Benz said that at first there will be introduced the single-motor EQA 250 version with a power output of 140 kW. That's the first number that we got. At a later point there will be additional, more capable versions with power output above 200 kW (the precise value was not disclosed) and all-wheel drive (dual motor). The video presentation to be released on the EQA website at 11:00 a.m. (CET)." https://insideevs.com/news/466483/mercedesbenz-eqa-debut-january-20/ CHEVY OFFERS 0% FINANCING ON USED BOLT EV AND VOLT "If you're considering a used electric car, now might be a good time to spring into action. General Motors is offering 0% APR financing for 72 months on used Chevrolet Bolt EV electric cars and Chevy Volt plug-in hybrids, according to our companion site CarsDirect, which cited a bulletin sent to dealerships last week. The deal, which runs through February 1, is the type of offer typically seen only for new cars." says Green Car Reports: "Only factory-certified used cars are eligible, the website said, adding that dealerships may certify used cars to their own standards, but these dealer-certified vehicles do not qualify for financing deals from the automaker. The reason for deals on used models may be that Bolt EVs of this vintage are currently being limited to 90% of their battery capacity, as GM and cell supplier LG Chem work on a solution to an issue potentially related to Bolt EV fire risk." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1130944_chevy-offers-0-financing-on-used-bolt-ev-and-volt XPENG PLANS EUROPEAN EXPANSION "With the launch of its G3 SUV in Norway, Xpeng is now looking at further European countries to expand to. The G3 has a WLTP range of 280 miles and is considered a smart SUV. This is thanks to its clever XPILOT 2.5 advanced driver assistance system. The G3’s auto parking function is able to distinguish between parallel and bay parking spaces, as well as marked and unmarked ones." reports Next Green Car: "The domestic market in China is still Xpeng’s primary customer base but it has big ambitions to move further into Europe. Xpeng is actively exploring its next steps, looking at other mature EV hotspots like Norway. The G3 SUV will be the first to roll out in other countries but the P7 electric sports sedan will be the next to launch in Europe." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9070/xpeng-plans-european-expansion/ BMW PLANS TO DOUBLE BATTERY ELECTRIC CAR SALES THIS YEAR "BMW said on Friday that it aims to double its sales of fully-electric vehicles this year as the German carmaker and rivals race to release new models to comply with CO2 emissions targets and chase market leader Tesla. BMW also said that including plug-in hybrids, it aims for a 50% increase in sales of electrified vehicles versus 2020. It did not give sales volumes for its fully electric vehicles but in 2020 data released on Tuesday BMW said it sold close to 193,000 electrified vehicles — fully electric and plug-in hybrid — last year." writes Autoblog: "Tesla delivered just under 500,000 vehicles, all fully electric, to customers in 2020. The BMW Group currently produces 13 electrified models — either fully electric or plug-in hybrid — sold in 74 markets. BMW said on Tuesday that its global EV sales rose 31.8% in 2020 and accounted for 15% of its sales in Europe, helping the company meet its European Union emissions targets for last year." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/16/bmw-plans-double-ev-sales/ VOLKSWAGEN ADDS EV MAKERS TO CO2 POOL WITH SAIC "Volkswagen AG has opened its CO2 pool in the EU further at the end of last year to include more manufacturers. The new pooling partners all make electric vehicles." according to electrive: "Take the Chinese newcomer Aiways, whose BEVs will now add to Volkswagen’s “efforts” in keeping in line with the EU emission regulations as the company drives forward European expansion. Other new members to the CO2 pool include the British London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), which belongs to the Geely Group. Most of the Group’s sales in Britain are through Bentley, meaning CO2 intensive cars. LEVC will now add to this pool of greener cars." https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/15/volkswagen-adds-ev-makers-to-co2-pool-with-saic/ EUROPEAN PLUG-IN CAR MARKET NOW ALMOST EQUAL WITH CHINA "According to Schmidt Automotive Research, the West European passenger car market finished 2020 under 35,000 units behind the Chinese plug-in market. Although that doesn't sound close on the surface, the difference between the two motoring giants at the end of 2019 was still a mammoth 650,000 units." writes Matthias Schmidt: "The West European market that includes the original EU member states before the 2004 enlargement plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland saw a near-even split between BEVs and PHEVs contribute to the 1.33 million new passenger cars entering European roads last year. While in China, according to CAAM data, four-in-five of the plug-ins entering roads there were of the pure electric BEV variant last year." https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/european-rechargeable-electric-car-market-now-almost-equal-with-china-exclusive AUDI STRENGTHENS BUSINESS IN CHINA Audi and FAW confirm a new cooperation company for the future production of PPE-based electric vehicles in Changchun in the northeast of China. AUDI AG and Volkswagen Group China will receive a 60-percent share, making this company – founded for the local production of fully electric Audi models on the “Premium Platform Electric” (PPE) codeveloped with Porsche – the first cooperation company with a majority interest held by Audi in China. Local manufacture of the first PPE model produced jointly with FAW is scheduled to start by 2024. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/01/First-majority-interest-held-by-Audi-in-new-cooperation-company-for-local-electric-car-production-with-FAW.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Mark Buckingham in New Zealand Kia Ora Martyn, My favorite charging network is Chargenet here in New Zealand thanks to them I have 98,000 ks on my Kona and can travel anywhere in NZ. Thanks for what you do , been listening since January 2018 so it’s 3 years coming up soon? Congrats THIJS TOLLENAAR My favourite charging network is the one available at my destination! With my 2012 Kangoo I have a limited range and no fast charging (3.7kW max actually) but driving it in the Netherlands is attainable because of the availability of destination chargers. As long as they are plenty and available, I’m happy! :-) (PATREON) JEAN-MICHEL MASSEY I can’t fault Tesla’s network - you called it already on the show - it just works, it’s fast, they’re plentiful, and the car plans the route for you, giving me confidence to go on long drives (I’ve done two 2000+ mile road trips around France) I’ve used a few destination chargers at hotels too which is always amazing - I have to street park my car in London, luckily can charge at work, street parking remains a sticking point for the masses in the city for sure, I like the Ubitricity model, power sipping off street lamps so, If there was one network in the city I’d like to roll out quicker, that would be the one - some city charging is paid by time - and becomes rather expensive to fill from low SOC to full, however, my local point remains fairly busy. LEE BROWN, SCOTLAND My answer for this week is ChargePlace Scotland. £20 a year for an RFID card and access to hundreds of chargers that are getting added to each and every month. It helped me buy an EV in the first place as all round where I live charging is still free on rapids and destination chargers. Dedicated helpline too and from my experience very little problems plugging in. VICK GRANT Instavolt gets my vote. It works, debit/credit card only, priced ok, easy to use. (PATREON) ED CORTEEN As most of my charging is at home we only charge on long trips and since these are mainly on motorways our favourite chargers are ZAP-MAPs least favourite, the Electric Highway, this was originally paid for with the help of Nissan so as a driver of a Leaf has never failed me, two chargers in most locations and very rarely a queue as we usually travel during the week. Most importantly if the charger loses connection you get a free charge, unlike other networks where the charger simply refuses to work in this situation. I think the poor implementation of CCS and only one charger at each location has put many drivers off and needs to be fixed! KARL CRAMER Change Point. I’d be willing to pay a reasonable rate but all the Charges Point chargers in my area are free. All of them. CAROLINE, LOS ALTOS CA Volta Charging here in the US! Free to consumer, super convenient locations and highly visible, and sounds like they’re coming with some form of DCFC that’s also (partially) free. I charge at the mall and grocery locations. Their free, easy to use charging Convinced me it’s time to buy into EV! NICHOLAS PARTRIDGE, EAST NORTHANTS Currently I'm enjoying chargepoint instavolt as they're conveniently located and very easy to use. Once I got the (NFC?) card sent from Holland. MATTI JOUKIMO, FINLAND My and many others in Finland prefer and love Recharge network for two main reasons. First they work like a charm and have wide coverage. Second, and this is equally important (if not more), they were the first to adopt awesome S-series charging system by Kempower! (special thanks to the owner of the McDonald's too.)" CASEY, EDMONDS I don't do very much long distance travel so I charge mostly at home. But when we're out shopping or running errands, I like to look for Volta chargers. They are "free" level 2 chargers with ads. The network is growing here in the US and for people like me, who don't need to go from 20 to 80, they're great. DS AUTOMOBILES TO GO ELECTRIC BY 2025 "Following the UK Government announcement to bring forward the end date on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2030, DS Automobiles said Wednesday it will meet the new guidelines five years ahead of time. By 2025, DS Automobiles will exclusively offer plug-in hybrid electric and fully electric vehicles to its customers. DS Automobiles has competed in the all-electric Formula E series since the championship started in 2014. The pioneering work from Formula E is used to advance the next-generation of DS Automobiles electric and plug-in vehicles, including the all-new DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, DS 7 CROSSBACK E-TENSE 4×4 and upcoming DS 9, the brand’s first premium saloon, embodying French luxury savoir-faire." Of course Volvo were one of the first major existing brands to make this announcement, DS certainly won't be the last. For those who want to have an electric future, it's a matter of when not if. And these kind of things provide clarity for customer, staff, dealers to ensure they get trained. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-9oFxYFODE&feature=emb_title&ab_channel=ABBFormulaE VW'S ELECTRIC ESTATE / WAGON IS GO VW said today ""At the Volkswagen’s brand plant in Emden, the transformation is also progressing rapidly: while the construction work for the switch to electric mobility is fully on track, the second electric model for the site has now been defined. In addition to the ID.4, the four-door all-electric Volkswagen Aero is scheduled to be manufactured there from 2023."" And adding to that, Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer Volkswagen Passenger Cars wrote on Linkedin: "Great news! Under the project name "Aero B" our plant in Emden gets its second E-model. The Aero B is our interpretation of sustainable premium. It scores in all dimensions of electrical performance: thanks to our continuously improved MEB, it can be charged super-fast and offers a bit more of everything: more space, more range, more acceleration and more top speed. As an elegant Shooting Brake, it will be the first electric variant on the market. It impresses with high-quality interiors and a lot of space: classy and spacious like a Phaeton, along with huge trunk volume. And with 700km a real range hero. Its aerodynamic design ensures a top cw value and an extremely attractive high-tech appearance. A feast for the senses – and for all tech and design fans! A new, powerful e-model that will attract a lot of attention around the world. Sustainable, Premium, Great - Made in Emden! From 2023 it rolls off the production line. In doing so, we are making a clear commitment to the importance of the location and to future-proof employment." That's the production version of the VW Space Vizzion. The 700km range is 435 miles. Possibly late ~375 in the EPA test cycle. The Neo eventually became the ID.3, the Crozz the ID.4 so this could be the ID.5. Possibly as the name for the sedan version, with with Aero estate version called ID.5X or ID.5S. The longer version of the MEB platform can take up to 16 modules of 7kW cells, so that's in theory a max size of 112kWh. Back in concept for we were told the specs they were aiming for: range of 590 km (367 miles) WLTP or 300 miles (483 km) EPA 82 kWh battery (77 kWh usable) 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds (5.0 seconds to 60 mph) all-wheel drive (there will be also rear-wheel-drive option) system output of up to 250 kW (with 205 kW rear motor and 75 kW front motor) based on MEB platform drag coefficient of 0.24 "Volkswagen Group's broader plan is to introduce around 70 all-electric models by 2030 and 20 are already in production. The number of hybrids (all types) will almost double to 60." says InsideEVs: "Cumulative sales of BEVs will reach 26 million by 2030, including 19 million based on the MEB platform. Most of the rest will be based on the PPE platform developed by Audi and Porsche. Sales of hybrids within those 10 years will reach 7 million." https://insideevs.com/news/455189/vw-emden-plant-new-electric-volkswagen-aero/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles NEW EPA RANGE/EFFICIENCY RATINGS FOR 2021 TESLA MODEL S PERFORMANCE "The top of the line, Performance version of the new 2021 Tesla Model S finally received an official range and efficiency ratings on EPA's website. The numbers are exactly as estimated by Tesla in October. The car on 19" wheels has a range of 387 miles (623 km), which is 39 miles (63 km) or 11.2% more than previously - 348 miles (560 km). The flashy 21" wheels affect the range noticeably, by 13.7%, so the range is 334 miles (537 km)." says INsideEVs: "The numbers for the Long Range Plus version, which can go up to 402 miles (647 km), were announced in June.! A reminder that Panasonic inceased the energy density of the 18650 cells recently. Also Tesla changed tyre supplier and made iterative efficiency gains. VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 SHINES IN THE NETHERLANDS "October saw the Dutch plugin electric vehicle (PEV) market return to the fast lane, jumping 228% year over year (YoY) to 9,116 units, the market’s best score ever if we exclude December months (which are prone to incentive-derived year-end rushes)." says CleanTechnica: "PEV market share jumped to 29% — 23% full electrics (BEV) — pulling the 2020 plugin share to 17% (13% BEV), and this time BEVs were the main driver of growth. a great result from the Volkswagen ID.3, which had 2,789 deliveries last month. That put it in #1 in the overall market, leaving the #2 Kia Niro some 1,600 units behind." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/11/18/volkswagen-id-3-shines-in-hot-dutch-market-29-plugin-vehicle-market-share/ BMW MOVES ENGINE PRODUCTION OUT OF GERMANY, MAKES ROOM FOR EVS " BMW on Wednesday said it will retool its German factories to build electric cars and components and shift manufacturing of combustion engines to plants in Austria and England as part of a broader shift toward low-emission cars" according to Autoblog; "BMW's Munich plant, which currently makes four-, six-, eight- and 12-cylinder combustion engines, will be retooled with a 400 million euro investment. The BMW i4 electric car will be built in Munich, a fully electric version of the 5-series and 7-series and the recently revealed iX (shown above) will be made in Dingolfing and an electric X1 will be made in Regensburg. Following a summit between car industry representatives, representatives from federal states and chancellor Angela Merkel, the government said it will spend one billion euros to extend the premium for buyers of electric vehicles until the end of 2025; one billion euros to support the exchange of old trucks with models equipped with a more modern combustion engine; and one billion euros for a "future car industry fund" to support the long-term transition in the industry, which is central to the German economy." write Clean Energy Wire: "The car buyers' premium of up to 9,000 euros per electric car was originally planned to end at the end of next year. The share of pure electric cars in new car registrations reached 8.4 percent in October" CA RESIDENTS WILL GET THE $1500 CLEAN FUEL REWARD "The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and state utilities have partnered to offer car buyers a $1,500 point-of-sale rebate for electric cars or plug-in hybrids. Unlike other purchase incentives, the California Clean Fuel Reward (CCFR) is taken directly off the purchase price or lease of a new vehicle. Consumers will get that price reduction starting November 17, albeit only at participating dealerships." says Green Car Reports: "The CCFR is funded by California utilities, using proceeds from the sale of emissions credits under the state's Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program. The credits are awarded to utilities that adopt low-carbon methods of energy production." It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 517-MILE-RANGE LUCID AIR WILL USE A 113KWH BATTERY PACK "When Lucid Motors revealed the range of its forthcoming electric sedan, plenty of eyebrows were raised. Independent testing confirmed that a Lucid Air, which enters production later this year, traveled 517 miles (832km) on a single charge. At the time, however, we didn't know the battery capacity of that test vehicle, since Lucid has previously stated that the Air would be available with packs varying from 60kWh to 120kWh. On Wednesday morning, we got our answer: 113kWh." writes Ars Technica: "517 miles from 113kWh is 4.57 miles/kWh (13.6kWh/100km), which is still extremely efficient by EV standards and would equate to up to 274 miles (440km) of range for an Air with a 60kWh pack. Previously, Lucid has said it is planning 60kWh, 100kWh, and 120kWh packs for the Air. If those numbers are total kWh as opposed to useable kWh, then a 60kWh Air would probably have a usable 56.5kWh, which should equate to 258 miles/415km." Lucid CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson: "It's relatively easy to achieve more range by adding progressively more batteries, but gaining 'dumb range' that way increases weight and cost, and reduces interior space. Lucid Air has achieved its remarkable range whilst also reducing battery size through its in-house technology, resulting in a breakthrough in overall vehicle-level efficiency." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/08/that-517-mile-range-lucid-air-will-use-a-113kwh-battery-pack/?comments=1 VW TAKING $100 DEPOSITS FOR 2021 ELECTRIC ID.4 "American buyers will be able to take delivery of an ID.4 by the end of the year. For those that want to make sure to get VW's electric crossover, the automaker will open up reservations in September." according to Car & Driver: "When the online reservation system goes live, customers can configure and reserve their ID.4 with a $100 refundable deposit. They'll then be able to track their vehicle's status via the My VW portal. An additional $400 deposit is required when the configuration of your vehicle is sent to the dealership of your choice. Even after that, the entire $500 deposit is still refundable all the way until the potential customer buys the ID.4. " https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a33822902/2021-vw-id4-deposits/ CHINESE EV MAKER XPENG SHARES JUMP 54% IN NYSE DEBUT "Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng Inc’s shares jumped 54% in their debut on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, after raising $1.5 billion in its upsized initial public offering." according to Reuters: "Shares of Xpeng, which counts Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba and Xiaomi Corp among its backers, opened at $23.10 per American Depositary Share (ADS), up from the raised offer price of $15 per ADS." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-xpeng-ipo/chinese-ev-maker-xpeng-shares-jump-54-in-nyse-debut-idUKKBN25N2LP CASTROL RELEASES STUDY TRYING TO FIND THE TIPPING POINTOR EV ADOPTION "To try and find what the public's tipping point will be for EV adoption, Castrol (of all companies) decided to bankroll a study. The resulting 50-page document requires a bit of commitment to get through, but what you're likely interested in are the headline figures, the study's methodology and Castrol's motives." says CNET: "The bulk of the data comes from 9,000 vehicle owners from eight countries. the three significant milestones to hit -- according to the study -- include a range of 291 miles, a charging time of 31 minutes and an average purchase price of approximately $36,000. The truth is that all three of those are available right now from several manufacturers, but the catch is that we're still in a situation where you can't have all three in one car. For example, the Tesla Model S will do over 291 miles, but it costs a hell of a lot more than $36,000. Plenty of EVs will fast charge in around 30 minutes (at least to 80%), even ones that cost under $36,000, but they won't get close to 291 miles of range." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/castrol-study-ev-tipping-point-global/#ftag=CAD-09-10aai5b BYTON TO RESUME OPERATIONS IN SEPTEMBER "There is news about the electric car start-up Byton, which has been temporarily suspended since 01 July. Chinese media now report, citing insiders, that the company is ready to resume full operations in September 2020." says electrive.com: "At the end of June, it looked as if Byton would not be able to cope with the consequences of the pandemic. Spokesman Dave Buchko announced a six-month break starting 1 July and the dismissal of almost all employees worldwide. A comeback seemed unlikely at this point – as reported. Autonews Gasgoo now reports in the aftermath of the plant closure that only 100 employees remain at the headquarters in Nanjing and that the offices in North America and Germany had to file for bankruptcy." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/26/byton-to-resume-operations-in-september/ 552 HP PORSCHE PANAMERA 4S E-HYBRID INTRODUCED "Porsche has revealed a refreshed version of its second generation Panamera which comes with subtle styling changes, a new top of the range Turbo S model and a new 4S E-Hybrid PHEV. The latter is a new model in the Panamera lineup and it is meant to replace the 550 horsepower Panamera Turbo which will no longer be available." reports InsideEVs: "Power for the 4S E-Hybrid comes from a 2.9-liter V6 engine with twin-turbos, aided by an electric motor that makes 552 horsepower. Nought to sixty in 3.5 seconds and tops out at 300 km/h (186 mph). With this kind of power figure, it is actually quicker than the former Turbo model and with a larger battery pack than before, it also provides more pure-electric range than previous Panamera PHEVs. Porsche says it’s increased the size of the battery from 14.1 kWh to 17.9 kWh (27 percent increase) and it also fiddled with the drive modes to help the car be even more efficient than before. Claimed all-electric range, according to the WLTP cycle, goes up to 54 km (34 miles); it has yet to be rated by the EPA." https://insideevs.com/news/441023/porsche-panamera-4-e-hybrid-detailed/ KIA DETAILS PLUG-IN HYBRID SORENTO "Kia has detailed the plug-in hybrid version of its new Sorento seven-seat SUV, available from early next year. The powertrain comprises a 177bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to a 90bhp electric motor, fed energy by a 13.8kWh battery, for a combined system output of 261bhp" according to Autocar: "As standard, drive is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox. it can transfer full power of both the engine and electric motor in parallel, which Kia claims results in "immediate acceleration response at any speeds, and direct access to available battery power at higher speeds. Kia also claims the powertrain is the first of its kind to use an independent water cooling system for the battery pack to ensure optimal efficiency." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/kia-details-plug-hybrid-sorento-ahead-2021-debut 80% OF TESLA MODEL Y BUYERS COME FROM FOSSIL FUEL VEHICLES "Someone named Troy (or “Troy Teslike” on Twitter) has been fastidiously tracking Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y orders for the past several years. His data is crowdsourced — Tesla reservation holders input their info and update it as their vehicles go through the system. " reports CleanTechnica: "According to his findings, nearly 80% of Model Y buyers are replacing fossil fuel powered vehicles. The data show 15.7% of Model Y buyers are replacing another Tesla, mostly the Model 3 (11.4%). For another 3%, the Model Y is their first car." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/27/nearly-80-of-tesla-model-y-buyers-come-from-fossil-fuel-vehicles-data-implies/ HYUNDAI 45 (AKA IONIQ 5) SPIED BEING QUIET BUT FAST ON THE NURBURGRING "The Hyundai 45 is back on the Nurburgring for a high-speed test session. Thankfully, this time our spies were able to catch the electric vehicle lapping the track on video, giving us a better look at its road behavior. For a crossover, it's almost glued to the road and quite stable in corners." says Motor1.com: "The good news is the vehicle is starting to look very much like the namesake concept from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. We didn’t expect the production model to look so close to the show car but we are happy to see the designers of the company have been given the green light to go with the unconventional styling." Likely to use dual motors, 300-mile range expected and circa 40k. BMW X5 XDRIVE45E: LONG-TERM TEST REVIEW Steve Fowler writes: "My 43.5mpg average is some way short of the official 200+mpg, and I’m managing to get around 47 miles of range from the battery. It takes a while to charge, though – the 24kWh pack is the same size as that in an original Nissan Leaf, and the reason for the X5’s decent electric range" It has an onboard 3.7kW single phase AC charger. 21kWh useable. 54 miles official. 7 hours to recharge. That's quick compared to it's competition (Zoe 50, MG ZS, IONIQ). Water cooled battery pack, heat pump too, they've done well with it. Isn't it the same chassis as DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and Vauxhall/Opel Corsa-E? All three certainly have exactly the same specs, 50kWh pack with 100kW charging (7kW onboard, optional 11kW). Although somehow the Pug and DS are 0-60 in 8.7 secs, but the Corsa is 7.6 secs. Hmm. They all have the same 100kW/136hp motor. For a quick splash & dash, the Peugeot will beat the Renault IF you can find a 150kW charger. But the charge curves, when going all the way >90%, Zoe will keep taking 30kW+ whilst the e-208 seems to go down to single figures, so the Zoe starts to 'catch up' (if that makes sense)." www.twitter.com/evnewsdaily ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES ARE PREDICTED TO SURGE IN 2021 "A new report by Cairn Energy Research Advisors, a research firm focused on the battery and EV industries, predicts a surge in electric vehicle sales in 2021 as countries around the world push new programs to encourage consumers to buy battery powered vehicles. Cairn estimates global sales of EVs in 2021 will jump 36% and top 3 million vehicles for the first time ever." says CNBC Markets: "Production of electric vehicles is estimated to climb to at least 1.3 million and could reach 1.5 million depending on market conditions this year, according to Bernstein analyst Mark Newman. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives raised his price target for Tesla from $600 to $800 saying, "we continue to believe EV demand in China is starting to accelerate with Tesla competing with a number of domestic and international competitors for this market share. Meanwhile, Cairn Energy Research predicts the biggest growth in EV sales next year will happen in Europe, mainly because governments in the EU are committed to lowering carbon dioxide emissions. That commitment is pushing countries like France to roll out new incentives to convince residents to buy electric cars. In announcing a new bonus for people to buy an electric car, France President Emmanuel Macron said he wanted France to become the top producer in Europe of clean vehicles. While the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are likely to get the lions share of mass market sales, there are several new models including the Ford Mustang Mach-E and General Motor's Hummer EV SUV that will focus more attention on the electric market. In addition, several electric pickup trucks are scheduled to roll out by the end of 2021." https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/29/led-by-tesla-electric-vehicle-sales-are-predicted-to-surge-in-2021.html RIVIAN ENLISTS FORMER TESLA EMPLOYEES TO BUILD ITS OWN SUPERCHARGER-STYLE NETWORK "It seems the Amazon-backed electric adventure vehicle startup Rivian is taking a leaf, and employees, out of the Tesla playbook before it launches its debut vehicles. Rivian has started work on its “adventure network,” its Tesla Supercharger rival, and its hired Carrington Bradley, Tesla’s former senior manager of charger deployment, to do it" says TheNextWeb: "Whilst at Tesla, Bradley was responsible for managing a team of project managers to “design, permit, and build” Supercharger locations. Under Bradley’s leadership, Tesla grew from building 50 to 150 Supercharger sites per year. The electric SUV startup has also hired Kit Ahuja — who was formerly a manager at Tesla — to be director of the Rivian Adventure Network. The company also recruited Sara Eslinger, formerly head of electric vehicle deployment at ride-share firm Lyft. It certainly looks like Rivian is getting ready to charge ahead, ahem, with its network. Having people with a successful track record in this year could be a boon for the startup." https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/06/02/rivian-enlists-former-tesla-employees-build-supercharger-style-network/ GEELY'S POLESTAR PLANS CHINA SHOWROOM EXPANSION TO COMPETE WITH TESLA "Polestar, the premium electric vehicle maker owned by China's Geely, plans a big expansion of its showroom network in the mainland, sources said, as it prepares for delivery of cars to compete with Tesla Inc's locally made Model 3. Showroom strength is becoming an important differentiator for electric vehicle (EV) makers in the world's biggest auto and EV market, as they line up new model launches" according to ChannelNewsAsia: "Polestar, which plans to deliver Polestar 2 electric sedans in China from July, currently has one showroom, in the capital Beijing. It plans to have 20 showrooms, with most of them opening in the third quarter of this year. Unlike sales of cars through dealers that most traditional automakers rely on, Polestar will sell directly to customers. In China, Tesla has over 50 showrooms. Nio currently operates around 110 showrooms, with some of the properties belonging to partners. Xpeng plans to have over 200 outlets " And there are hybrid versions in China like WM Motor, which has it's own Spaces to see the cars, and then partners who look after Sales, delivery and services." https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/geely-s-polestar-plans-china-showroom-expansion-to-compete-with-tesla--sources-say-12795202 BUFFETT-BACKED BYD TO SUPPLY EV BATTERIES TO FORD "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD Co Ltd (002594.SZ), (1211.HK) will supply EV batteries to U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co (F.N), a document on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed on Monday. Ford’s China venture with Changan Automobile (000625.SZ) is seeking government approval to build a plug-in hybrid model equipped with BYD’s batteries, according to the document." writes Reuters today: "This marks BYD’s first-known battery supply deal with a major global automaker. Shenzhen-based BYD, which is backed by U.S. investor Warren Buffett, said it would supply EV components including batteries and power management devices." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-ford-byd-electric/buffett-backed-byd-to-supply-ev-batteries-to-ford-idUKKBN2381VJ RENAULT, NISSAN AND MITSUBISHI EVS AND PHEVS SHARE UPPER BODIES "The companies said they would share "upper bodies" of same segment cars besides platforms. Would that mean all EVs and PHEVs would look the same? Renault sells Dacia cars in Latin America with its diamond-shaped logo. The Nissan Aprio is nothing more than a badge-engineered first-generation Dacia Logan. The intention with the upper bodies was not to have to redo everything from company to company. There are things clients do not see, and that can be common, something Delbos names as "first upper body." Unfortunately, she did not detail what this structure would be." says InsideEVs: "It is a step further than the Common Module Families (CMF) strategy. If the three carmakers can share the platforms and the first upper body, they can have savings of up to 40 percent. each company will have its own teams working on the first upper body and on what she called "sister upper bodies" – the part that would ensure each car would look like a proper Renault, Nissan, or Mitsubishi. The interim CEO – who is waiting for Luca de Meo to take the helm on July 1 – also wishes that all the same-segment cars from the three companies can be produced in the same factory. That will lower idle capacity and allow for plant closure, another cost-cutting measure. Renault wants to save €2 billion and will fire 15,000 people. That means that the Nissan Ariya will probably already be developed to allow for a Renault and Mitsubishi derivatives. The PHEV vehicles from Renault could also present Nissan options. The Captur PHEV could help a Juke PHEV to be sold in the future, for example. The future Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV could be the basis for a new Renault Kadjar, even if we believe the Nissan Qashqai will lead the pack." https://insideevs.com/news/426271/will-renault-nissan-mitsubishi-evs-look-alike/ TESLA STOCK REELS IN $900 FOLLOWING ELON MUSK’S BIG SPACE ACHIEVEMENT "At the time of writing, Tesla stock traded at $873.95. The surge in price could be attributed to projections that the electric vehicle sector will skyrocket in 2021 based on a new report by Cairn Energy Research Advisors. Musk’s success over the weekend with the newly-earned bonus and successful SpaceX launch may have attributed to the stock price increase as well. SpaceX became the first privatized company to successfully launch NASA astronauts into orbit." reports Teslarati. From the comments: "Space X and Tesla) are two different companies in different market segments but human nature being what it is, will (and have) draw a connection between the successful launch of the Crew Dragon to the ISS and the value of the car company. Had it been the other way around and the launch had failed, I have no doubt that the people who are anti-Tesla would have had a "field day" with equating that event with Tesla's viability as a company." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-stock-reels-in-900-following-elon-musks-big-space-achievement-analyst-upgrades/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK Critics say EVs are on the for the rich, so what do you view as ‘affordable’ prices? Show #790 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 26th May 2020. MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES ITS ELECTRIC EQV MINIVAN FOR ~$64,000 "Mercedes-Benz is launching its electric EQV minivan in Europe for €71,388.10 (incl. 19% VAT), which is the equivalent of a sticker price of about ~$64,000 USD." says Electrek: "The electric EQV MPV was first unveiled last year when we learned that it is equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack, but the company is limiting the usable capacity to 90 kWh. They believe it’s going to result in 405 km (250 miles) of range on a single charge. To charge the battery pack, the EQV is equipped with an 11 kW on-board charger and it can DC fast-charge at up to 110 kW, which Mercedes claims can charge the battery pack from 10 to 80% in less than 45 min. The electric van will be available as part of its V-Class lineup in Europe, but no availability has been confirmed for the North American market." https://electrek.co/2020/05/26/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-minivan-price/ CarBuzz said: "Like the EQC SUV, the EQV features a similar sealed-off grille design. Riding on 18-inch wheels, it’s certainly one of the smarter vans around. Although still unconfirmed for the local market, the EQV will be offered elsewhere with two wheelbase lengths, the longer one stretching to 135 inches. It can seat up to eight passengers and accommodate 36.4 cubic feet of their luggage. Pretty nifty for a zero-emissions vehicle." https://carbuzz.com/cars/mercedes-benz/eqv And Green Car Reports says: "A new feature offers a particularly efficient and comfortable driving style: recuperation level DAUTO. According to the maxim “drive ahead and save energy” information from the security assistants, the navigation system and the camera get connected and adjust the strength of the recuperation situation—specifically and in real time. In addition, four driving programs help the customer to choose individually between the maximum of comfort and the maximum of range while driving." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/05/20200526-eqv.html KIA IS CONSIDERING AN ULTRA-SMALL ELECTRIC CAR "Kia is examining plans to build a purely electric miniature car in the style of the Citroën Ami. Although the South Korean company has not revealed a timetable for these plans, it seems that Kia is already considering a new distribution model for the electric microcar." says Carrie from Electrive: "In a candid interview with AutoExpress Emilio Herrera, COO of Kia in Europe confirmed the company’s considerations. The mini electric car for urban areas – if it is realized – will be offered for rent globally via a subscription model. “The idea is to have a dedicated platform from Kia that we could possibly share with Hyundai,” Herrera said. The Kia manager did not name a timetable for a possible market launch of the small electric car. AutoExpress is expecting a corresponding production model in 2022. Citroën introduced the Ami at the end of February. The small two-seater in a strongly stylised design is to be available at prices starting at 6,000 euros or a monthly leasing rate of 19.99 euros (four years, 10,000 kilometres per year) in France. Pricing models for other European markets have not yet been revealed. Since Herrera spoke of a “dedicated platform” for the very small electric car, it does not seem likely to be the skateboard platform from Canoo. " https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/26/kia-is-considering-an-ultra-small-electric-car/ RUMOR: IN APRIL TESLA RECEIVED ABOUT 15,000 ORDERS FOR MIC MODEL 3 LR "According to the Chinese media (via Moneyball), Tesla has received in April close to 15,000 orders for the new Long Range Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3. It's an unofficial number." reports InsideEVs: "t's great news that the demand for the upcoming LR (rear-wheel drive) is high because Tesla intends to produce in China some 4,000 Model 3 per week as early as in June. The last month was weaker than expected, as Model 3 registrations amounted to 4,312, up to 3-4 times less than anticipated production output (at 3,000 per week). It's explained that consumers were delaying orders of the Standard Range Model 3 to get a more attractive price (after changes in subsidies). Only time will tell whether sales in China will really stabilize at 4,000 per week (or 12,000 per month) for all versions (SR and LR)." https://insideevs.com/news/425337/tesla-15000-orders-model-3-lr/ AUDI E-TRON IS THE NEW KING OF NORWAY "Norway remains one of the most fascinating auto markets in the world. With a 70% plug-in vehicle market share in the first 4 months of 2020, there is nothing that comes close to it. That isn’t an overnight figure either — the country has been far ahead of any other market in terms of plug-in vehicle market share for several years."That said, the market leader is now a vehicle that would typically be outside the price range of a working class family in other countries, but Norway is a rich country (very rich country) with adventurous terrain, so it makes a bit of sense. The Audi e-tron isn’t just first — it’s far ahead in the #1 spot so far this year." says CleanTechnica: "A German model that was in the #1 spot for many, many months, the Volkswagen e-Golf, is solidly in second at 6% market share. After that, you’ve got the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and then a long tail of remaining PEVs. You also have a handful of plug-less vehicles scattered into the overall sales rankings (see charts below)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/audi-e-tron-is-the-new-king-of-norway/ MACRON DEMANDS CARMAKERS TURN TO ‘MADE IN FRANCE’ FOR €8BN VIRUS AID "French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled on Tuesday (26 May) an €8 billion aid package for the auto industry, which includes increased subsidies for electric car purchases" says Euractiv.com: "Negotiations with the likes of Citroën, Peugeot and Renault have been ongoing for weeks and the €8 billion support package does not come without strings, as Macron has made it clear they are expected to do more domestically. It was not immediately unclear if the support plan has specific conditions in terms of moving production back to France, although Renault will reportedly build electric motors at a plant in Normandy rather than in Asia, as previously planned, in order to access state aid. Renault will also lend its weight to the Battery Alliance, a pan-European industrial push to boost battery production and increase supply in check with growing demand for electric vehicles. Macron’s €8bn scheme is also aimed at consumers, who will be able to benefit from new and improved subsidy schemes worth around €1bn. For electric cars, the current premium of €6,000 for private citizens will increase to €7,000, while plug-in hybrids will be worth €2,000." https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/news/macron-demands-carmakers-turn-to-made-in-france-for-e8bn-virus-aid/ RECORD €60BN INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIC CARS AND BATTERIES IN EUROPE SECURED LAST YEAR Europe secured €60 billion in investments to produce electric vehicles and batteries last year – 19 times more than in 2018, new analysis shows. Driven by EU car CO2 targets, industry and governments committed 3.5 times more into EV and battery production in Europe than they did in China, according to T&E’s report. Germany got the biggest chunk, €40 billion, coming mainly from the Volkswagen Group, and Tesla which announced a plant in Berlin. The Czech Republic received €6.6 billion, also thanks to VW, which plans to produce 75 all-electric models worldwide by 2029. Italy secured €1.75 billion in EV investments last year from Fiat, while France, Sweden and the UK each got around €1 billion from car manufacturers. Spain received close to €300 million from Opel, and Croatia got €80 million from Hyundai and Kia. BYD BLADE PRISMATIC BATTERY CELL SPECS AND POSSIBILITIES "Simpler battery packs made with fewer and larger battery cells weren’t possible with compromised platforms like MQB, however in skateboard platforms like MEB – specially made for electric cars -, they are not only possible, they are what makes sense. Only in late 2016, high energy density battery cells started to be available in pouch format, like the LGX E63 made by LG Chem." says PushEVs: "In 2020, assembling big battery packs with tiny cells doesn’t make sense and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla announces a battery pack made with cobalt-free prismatic battery cells in “battery day”. This would be great, not only for Tesla, but also for electric bicycle manufacturers who would benefit from an immediate increase of cylindrical cells available on the market. BYD Blade Battery is a module-less CTP (cell-to-pack) battery pack. Without modules, the long prismatic battery cells connected in series are put in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, making it as simple as possible. The simplicity of the CTP technology helps to achieve a good energy density at the battery pack level, even if the energy density of the cells isn’t amazing." https://pushevs.com/2020/05/26/byd-blade-prismatic-battery-cell-specs-possibilities/ RENAULT CAPTUR PLUG-IN HYBRID SPEC REVEALED Renault UK has confirmed full specifications of new E-TECH version of the two all-new Renault Captur Plug-in Hybrid. The All-New Captur Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) benefits from a new petrol-electric powertrain, making it the most efficient and economical in the range as well as the most powerful. Show #567 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Raj in the USA said "Best EV Podcast out there!" "Martyn gives a nice overview of the day’s EV news, and creates a sense of community by interacting with his listeners. It’s great to participate in his question of the week. So many of today’s EV podcasts are overly “Tesla centric” and as hard as it is for a podcast to avoid that -it’s nice to listen one that’s more inclusive." Mike Cheeseman in the USA said "Daily Must-Hear!" "The world of E-transport is really dynamic, and is unfolding rapidly around the world. Host Martyn has been consistently arranging these fascinating developments into manageable chunks for long enough to be considered a formitable expert in the field, and a very entertaing show host as well. Thanks for doing what you do." Incidentally you've left 197 reviews and 432 5-star ratings. Thank you! An email from Mitchell Sink: "And Id like to suggest that you consider creating two daily podcasts. One covering every thing you can find about Tesla, the other about every thing else that is related to EVs." Finally – took a nail to the new Zoe tyre! Oh no! ESCAPING HURRICANE DORIAN IN AN EV From Joshua Pritt: "With Dorian pressing in to Florida everyone keeps asking how will I evacuate with my 2018 Nissan Leaf. I have to explain to them that I just don't wait until the day of the storm. As long as you leave a day early and use abetterrouteplanner.com to plan the charging stops I should be fine. I also explain that I could use my 2017 Volt and just drive like a normal gas car and wait in line at the gas stations like everyone else!" NEW FROM AUDI IN EUROPE IN 2020 e-tron S in May, e--tron S Sportback in May and e-tron GT in November 2020. FORD EXEC: ICONIC MODELS TO GO AFFORDABLY ELECTRIC: F-150, MUSTANG "Autocar recently traveled to Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. It gleaned exclusive information about the future of Ford, directly from some of its top executives. The article is packed with insight, information, and many direct quotes." says InsideEVs of Ford's Global Product Development Director for Battery Electric Vehicles, Darren Palmer: "I was unsure at first. For me, electric cars were more about sensible buying than the exciting cars I knew. Then Sherif Marakby, our autonomous vehicle CEO, said, ‘trust me this is going to be the next big development in cars’. When you know them, you’ll love them. And he was right. I just couldn’t believe how good these new cars were. They could do things you’d never do in an ICE [internal combustion-engined] car. They were just better. We’re hitting our biggest icons first, but we have more. And we’ll keep working through them. We decided very carefully where we’d play in the electric car market, and that every one would amplify the characteristics of the model it was based on. Each one had to be extremely desirable, but at an attainable price."“It’s the greatest change and opportunity in the auto industry in 30 years, and probably a lot longer. Today’s performance BEV isn’t just about the electric motor. It’s about software, surprises, over-the-air updates, cleverness, the fact it can learn and anticipate what you want, and makes your life better. It’s an entirely new kind of product. Those who try it will never go back." https://insideevs.com/news/367357/ford-executive-spills-ev-future-details/ RENAULT ZOE WINS IN JULY In Europe: "The big news in July was that the Renault Zoe profited from the expected Tesla off-peak month, winning another monthly trophy, its 4th this year. The French hatchback and Tesla Model 3 have divided all the monthly wins this year (January, April, May, July for Renault, and February, March, June for Tesla)." says CleanTechnica: "With Tesla starting to deliver the Model 3 SR/SR+ versions by now and Renault expected to double the Zoe’s output with the upcoming restyling, do not expect the current status quo to change much, or at least until the VW ID.3 starts to deliver in large volumes, expected by Q2 2020." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/30/renault-zoe-wins-in-july-but-tesla-model-3-remains-2019-leader/ VW’S SEAT UNVEILS SLEEK NEW MEB-BASED ELECTRIC SUV WITH 77 KWH BATTERY PACK "Seat, a Spanish automaker owned by Volkswagen, has unveiled a new electric SUV concept with a 77 kWh battery pack based on VW’s new MEB platform under its Cupra brand." says Electrek: "The concept is equipped with “a 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack”, which Seat claims is good for up to 450 km (280 miles), but the figure is based on the WLTP test cycle. It’s not as stringent as the EPA standard. The battery pack is powering 2 electric motors with a combined 225kW (306PS) output. Inside the vehicle, there are 4 sculptural bucket seats and 2 large screens. The prototype of the Tavascan concept is going to debut at this year’s IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show." https://electrek.co/2019/09/02/vw-seat-cupra-meb-electric-suv-battery/ VOLKSWAGEN ID.R SETS RECORD ON TIANMEN MOUNTAIN The ID.R currently holds the records on Pikes Peak (USA) and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (GB), the electric lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (D), and now the fastest time for an ascent of Tianmen Mountain in China. The car is the motorsport ambassador for the new, fully-electric range of vehicles from Volkswagen, the ID. family, the first of which – the ID.3 – will have its world premiere on 10 September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Romain Dumas (F) completed the 99 tight corners on the Tianmen Mountain road in 7:38.585 minutes – faster than ever before. QUESTION OF THE WEEK SHAHAD I live in an apartment with no charging access, so I primarily charge at work. I plug in for the last few hours of the day after people start going home and chargers open up. I only need to do this a few days a week to top off. My work offers free charging so this works very well and I've had to stop at a paid charger once in the past 2 months of owning my EV. This includes the extra miles I spend driving for Lyft to make the payments, since I hadn't financially been planning on upgrading until my old car unexpectedly died. I was already EV curious, but your podcast was one of the things that pushed me over the edge on the decision to upgrade, keep up the good work! KARL CRAMER As a renter I can't charge at home. Luckily work offers free charging, from solar power, and my gym has a nearby parking lot with free charging too. That's my morning and evening charging routine. DOUG VOWLES Too often parameters and criteria from the gas/petrol world are overlaid on the EV world by non-EV owners, and those wishing to become EV owners. Hence the “How far can you go?” types of questions. The reality of timely e-sips and the occasional full charge needs to be put out there. If the new model is understood and internalized by the buying public then perhaps the need for “big range” can take a back seat to every day practicality. JOHN CHRISTENSEN My wife and I have had our Chevy Bolt for a year in Chicago, Illinois, USA. We have a level 2 EVSE in our garage. Our charging routine changes with the season. In the spring and fall we leave our car unplugged and charge only every other week, because at that time of year the Bolt is much more efficient. But in the summer and winter we leave it plugged in. This is because in the summer our garage gets pretty hot and the Bolt needs to cool the battery and it’s best to leave it plugged in to keep the battery conditioned. Then in the winter it’s the other extreme; it gets super cold and the car then needs to be plugged in to heat the battery. Plus the range drops significantly and we want to get the most range we can then. So it changes season to season. JONATHAN PRICE As the Zoe became our primary car 4 KW solar was not sufficient to fully power the Zoe along with household consumption, particularly in winter of course. This summer I upgraded to 8KW solar and a single Powerwall 2 battery ... a large part of which is funded by cumulative FIT payments since 2011. I’ve added a Zappi hub and extra sensors to tune the battery and car charging and consumption. With the extra solar I can run my Zoe on sunshine for much more of the year, sometimes dumping excess from the Powerwall too ... 3.5KW from Powerwall plus 3.5KW from Solar even on partly sunny days allows me to charge for free at 7KW on many days ... giving a fast - not rapid - charge boost during the day when needed. Zappi now varies charge rate automatically between about 1.4 and 7KW to avoid any unnecessary consumption from the grid. Since I had a PW2 installed in mid May my Zoe has been about 85%+ solar power DAVID NYE Our PHEV has only around 40-45 kilometres of range on battery, so it’s pretty important to top up every night. I use off peak power and charge it after midnight. We can and sometimes do top up a little at the local shopping centre, though it’s only 3.6kW. SACHA I’m a city dweller so no home charging like in suburbia .. - charging once a week or so at supercharger (I got parking at a location with supercharging which happens to be at a transit station). - SOC 65-85% is normally where I stop - When traveling I use superchargers only (900 mile trip every 2 weeks , L2 would make a 8h a much longer trip otherwise) ALEX BANAHENE I started of doing full charge at home every time it got down to about 50 miles but after a year of use I’m happier now to go down to 20 miles or so. Generally this meant charging about once a week which I normally did on a Sunday. EDUARD PERTINEZ We plug the car (a Kona EV 64kWh) almost every night. It is configured to charge from 1am to 7am and fill up to 80%. Here in Catalonia you can opt for special night tariffs that are only 8cents of Euro for kWh. Night tariffs are so cheap because nuclear fussion and wind generation at night surpasses demand. So in fact I am charging my car with recicled energy. It cannot be greener than that! RICHARD I have a new Zoe that gets 280km between charges. I charge often as I like to park at an EV station when I shop. Tops the car off and I like the designated spot. Never abuse my stay. Win win. JERRY ALLISON I have owned a model 3 for a year now and I charge the car whenever I can. This is mostly at Chargepoint stations for an hour or so at a time (equates to 19MPH FREE charge). I tend to charge if possible when I go out for dinner or lunch. Some stations provide faster 26MPH charges and are also FREE, mostly because they are city owned and free to the public. I charge at home about once or twice a month. There are 12 solar panels on my roof and they produce approx. 1400 plus watts of electricity. And if I need to charge at home, I tend to wait for a sunny day. MARK WESTON When I took delivery of my Hyundai kona electric Premium SE 64kwh I asked that exact question. I was told only to charge to 100% when going on long journeys at home and on the road to 80%. At home I charge to 80% run it down to between 20 -10% then recharge back-up. On occasions back-up to 90%. I'm currently charging around every 7-8days. Great show as all ways. Thank you for what you do. QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Correcting Audi: Tesla Model 3 Charges Over 2 Times Faster Than Audi e-tron "The article was written by Simon Barke and Myles Clark. They each hold a PhD in physics, work for an international space mission at the University of Florida, and understand scientific data quite well. Matthew Mostafaei, Audi’s manager for e-tron, presented data taken from Twitter during the New York Auto Show without naming the source. (That’s plagiarism.) The data was misrepresented by plotting it on a different axis. (That’s a falsification.) He then used the data to show the e-tron’s charging superiority over the Model 3, when it actually proves the opposite. (That’s deception.) You may call this good marketing. I call it a brazen lie. At best, it is a highly misleading accident." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/17/correcting-audi-tesla-model-3-charges-over-2-times-faster-than-audi-e-tron/ NISSAN CLAIMS ITS UPGRADED PROPILOT SYSTEM ENABLES HANDS-OFF HIGHWAY DRIVING "Nissan is introducing a new version of its ProPilot Assist driver-assist system in Japan that marks a big step forward in automation. The current version of ProPilot Assist is basically adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, but Nissan claims the new system — dubbed ProPilot 2.0 — allows for “hands-off” driving on highways." says DigitalTrends: "ProPilot 2.0 is designed to work only on highways, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot and Cadillac’s Super Cruise systems. It has the capability to follow a route set in the car’s navigation system from on-ramp to off-ramp. Once the car reaches the off-ramp, the driver must retake full control. On the highway, though, Nissan claims drivers can take their hands off the wheel while the car cruises in a single lane." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/nissan-propilot-20-driver-assist-system/ MG ZS EV TO BE EQUIPPED WITH 44.5 KWH BATTERY "MG (part of the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor) announced further details about the MG ZS EV, currently presented at the London Motor Show. The electric crossover will be equipped with 5 kWh liquid-cooled battery, which places it almost directly against the Hyundai Kona Electric with the 39.2 kWh standard battery. The WLTP range will be confirmed in Q3." according to InsideEVs. The press release says: "The ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh water-cooled battery with rapid-charging capability that will enable it to be recharged from 0-80% in 43 minutes, while domestic charging on a 7kW unit takes six-and-a-half hours from 0-100%. Certified range on current WLTP test regulations is expected to be confirmed in Q3." The cost-cutting measures are necessary despite the fact that Tesla just raised $2.7 billion earlier this month, Musk said in the email."reporst The Verge today: "Musk and Zach Kirkhorn, who recently replaced outgoing chief financial officer Deepak Ahuja, will review “all expenses of any kind anywhere in the word, including parts, salary, travel expenses, rent, literally every payment that leaves our bank account,” according to the email." https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/17/18629166/elon-musk-tesla-money-changes-cfo-employee-expenses TESLA IS UPDATING BATTERY SOFTWARE AFTER MODEL S CATCHES FIRE IN HONG KONG "A Tesla Model S caught fire in a Hong Kong parking lot on Sunday, less than a month after video of a Model S bursting into flames in Shanghai, China went viral. Now, “out of an abundance of caution,” Tesla says, the company is making software changes that could reduce the risk of batteries catching fire." reports Jalopnik: "Jalopnik spoke with a Tesla spokesperson about the incident, and the company said it is making some over-the-air changes to thermal and charge management battery software to make the Model S and X safer" Tesla said: "As we continue our investigation of the root cause, out of an abundance of caution, we are revising charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air software update that will begin rolling out today, to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity.” With an update on the article after it was published: "This article has been amended to clarify that the Tesla Model S or X may not necessarily have to be driving for extreme battery temperatures to occur. The new thermal management software aims to manage those temperatures under all conditions." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-is-updating-battery-software-after-a-model-s-catc-1834794877 TESLA NERFS AUTOPILOT IN EUROPE DUE TO NEW REGULATIONS "Tesla is starting to push a new software update that is pulling back some Autopilot features in most European markets due to new regulations. Tesla’s Autopilot on Model X and Model S was already approved under the previous set of regulations, but they now have to walk back some functionalities in order to comply. The changes are starting to get push to Model S and Model X vehicles in a new 2019.16.1 software update." says Fred at Electrek. Tesla wrote" “Due to new local regulations, the limit of how far the steering wheel can turn while Autosteer is active has been adjusted. This may reduce Autosteer’s ability to complete sharp turns. Additionally, to initiate Auto Lane Change, the turn signal must be engaged to the first detent (held partially up or down) and the lane change must start within 5 seconds of engaging the turn signal.” https://electrek.co/2019/05/17/tesla-nerfs-autopilot-europe-regulations/ PEUGEOT POSITIONS E-208 AS TOUGH RIVAL TO FUEL-POWERED SIBLINGS "Peugeot hopes to draw buyers to the brand's first mass-market full-electric vehicle -- the e-208 -- with a long-term battery warranty and lease rates that are comparable to internal combustion versions. The favorable terms are part of Peugeot's ambitions to have the e-208 account for 15 percent of its new small hatchback's global volume." according to Automotive News Europe: "Sales prices for the 208 will be announced this spring, but Peugeot is already promoting a 48-month, 60,000-km, 299 euro-a-month lease for the e-208, with a down payment of 2,400 euros. The company says the terms compare favorably to gasoline versions (269 euros a month) and diesel versions (289 euros a month) of the 208 when the cost of fuel is taken into consideration." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/peugeot-positions-e-208-tough-rival-fuel-powered-siblings COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #463 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 5th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BRIAN WEATHERALL I’ve already made the change to independent servicing in my 2017 Leaf, following a recommendation on the socials I found a garage on HEVRA.org.uk The nearest was 40 miles away but for my leaf that’s quite a cheap and easy journey, they quoted £120 compared to the dealer at £199. Dropped the car off at 9am, had a few hours in a nearby café getting some work done on their wifi and was all done and back in the office after lunch. No warrantee issues as they used genuine Nissan parts and followed Nissan service guidance, they even had my car plugged into a 7KW charger while they serviced it. Also as you get 3 years recovery with Nissan for a new car I don’t lose that either, not for another year anyway. CRAIG ROGERS I believe that independent garages will always be in high demand, as regular OEM dealerships continue to push their outdated and expensive service schemes as they try and rake in as much cash as possible. Look at Kia who are stating that the new Kia E-Nero is listed as needing a service EVERY year or 10,000 miles ……hahaha I’ve seen many other comments on social media that state that Nissan, BMW, Mercedes are all doing something similar and charging huge amounts of money for servicing, until the customer questions exactly what has been carried on their vehicle! i.e. Diagnostic plug in check & Pollen filter change etc…. I would happily take my car to someone with a great reputation, like Cleevely EV, or another HEVRA registered company. At least I know that they have been properly trained on electric vehicles and know what they are doing. It more than I could say about OEM dealerships that are still concentrating on fossil car servicing. RAJEEV NARAYAN The immediate future of independent auto repair shop, as they exist now, is indeed bleak. Items that need to be serviced in a pure BEV are fewer and in need of service less often. Also current specialty shops that specialize in mufflers, breaks, oil changes may all go the way of the phone booth. This threatens not only the independent repair shops and their non-dealer affiliated network of suppliers, but the dealership's repair and maintenance shop as well. As car computers get more complicated and telemetry data collection gets more robust and mainly shared with the dealer, it is quite possible the dealership will absorb a good deal of whatever maintenance and repair business is left, at the expense of the independents. I suspect the independent car repair/service business will continue to exist but change into something completely different, perhaps some sort of consolidated car wash/lidar inspection/safety check station that also will change your wiper blades and cabin filter, who knows. GARETH FRANCE I feel there is certainly a place for after market servicing and repairs. My Leaf has covered 114k miles in 4 years and been rapid charged well over 4,600 times due to a previous life as a taxi. The battery is in perfect health however the charger failed during my first 6 months of ownership. Nissan wanted to charge a whopping £24k to repair this! I ended up actually repairing it myself at a cost of £500 using parts from a local breakers yard. However Indra Renewable Technologies would have only charged £1,500, a bargain compared to the dealer I think you will agree. HOWARD SMITH I like the idea of other shops being able to upgrade or repair electric vehicles. I think the emergence of electric vehicles will breathe life back into automotive performance shops and parts suppliers especially as all electric conversion kits become available for classic car platforms. KYLE HODGSON Think about all the phone repair shops. Sure some people take their iPhone back to the shiny genius bar, if it's in warranty- but where I live "u break iFix" shops are popping up in most neighborhoods now. We've used them ourselves with handed down iPhones that were out of warranty. I can't imagine the dealership service model working. Not enough regular maintenance. But, EV's still have windshields, tires, rims, wiper blades, windshield washer fluid, and on and on. I sometimes wonder looking under the hood of my Soul EV if someone with a healthy understanding of electrical safety could actually fix it more easily than our old ICE car? Simpler, certainly. DAVID NYE Whilst the BEV service demands are much less than an ICE, I think it’s extremely important for other options to be available. There are also thousands of car repair shops employing many thousands of service people, and some of these will have to diversify to include EV’s. (I would imagine the same thing happened when horses were replaced by cars.) In any event, many smaller towns will not have dedicated company service premises for each brand of EV, so it’s really absolutely essential that manufacturers offer technical support, parts availability etc., to independent service providers. COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Should EVs celebrate or ‘hide’ their technology? A battery pack with a capacity of at least 60 kWh will provide enough juice for a maximum range of roughly 310 miles (500 kilometers)." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "As a final note, the EQ B will not be the only GLB model with an electric twist since Mercedes also has plans for a plug-in hybrid variant. It will combine a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with dual electric motors for an AWD setup and will pack a floor-mounted battery good for 62 miles (100 km) of electric range.: https://www.motor1.com/news/329190/mercedes-eq-b-spy-photos/ AUDI E-TRON ELECTRIC SUV GETS 204 MILES EPA RATING, DELIVERIES START IN THE US NEXT MONTH "Audi announced today that the e-tron, the automaker’s first next-generation electric vehicle, is finally going to arrive in the US in May. At the same time, the electric SUV received its EPA rating: 204 miles. The e-tron was originally supposed to launch in 2018, but deliveries have been delayed officially due to software issues and unofficially due to rumored battery supply problems" reports Fred at Electrek: "The German automaker says that reservation holders will start taking deliveries in May and US dealerships will start getting display vehicles and a fleet for test drives. Along with the US introduction, the electric SUV is getting its EPA rating and it might be surprising to some: 204 miles. This is significantly lower than the few other electric SUVs on the market despite having a similar size battery pack: 95 kWh. During our Audi e-tron first drive review, we noted that the efficiency was surprisingly low and that the electric SUV would see a tough time getting to 200 miles of range on a single charge." https://electrek.co/2019/04/04/audi-e-tron-range-epa-us/ TESLA WILL START INSTALLING MODEL 3 PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT IN GIGAFACTORY 3 THIS MAY How is the chinese GigaFactory coming along? "the installation of vehicle production equipment could start as early as May, when the initial stages of the facility are expected to be completed. This represents a notable accomplishment for both the electric car maker and its construction partner, considering that Gigafactory 3 is one of the most ambitious foreign-owned projects that have been attempted in China." according to Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Part of the reason behind Gigafactory 3’s rapid progress is the support that Tesla enjoys from the Chinese government. Tesla’s presence in China is beneficial to the country, which is aggressively pushing for the adoption of electric vehicles. In a statement to Xinhua News, Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association, noted that Tesla’s China production will have a “catfish effect” in the country’s auto industry, pushing domestic carmakers to expedite and improve their own electric vehicles to compete with the Silicon Valley-based electric car maker." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-model-3-production-equipment-may/ NIO TO LAUNCH ITS OWN SUPERCHARGERS THIS MONTH "China-based startup NIO is ready to launch supercharger stations in April and officially open its “one click for power” service in the meantime to further facilitate the EV charging for consumers, according to local media outlets" reports Gasgoo: "It is said that the supercharger stations will work in three modes. The first is to allocate 300kW to 4 to 6 supercharger stations based on the number of to-be-charged vehicles. Besides, the startup will build charging piles assisted with its battery-swapping stations or create a 120kW charging pile equipped with 2 chargers. The power for NIO’s existing charging pile is 7kW." https://insideevs.com/nio-launch-superchargers-this-month/ NISSAN LEAF SALES IN JAPAN DECREASED FOR 4TH CONSECUTIVE MONTH "In March, sales of the Nissan LEAF in Japan amounted to roughly 2,381, which is 21% less than a year ago. That brings us to the 4th straight month of decline, though at least the pace of decrease is slowing down" according to the experts who track these things at InsideEVs.com: "We are not sure whether the new 62 kWh Nissan LEAF e+ is already being delivered in volume (it should’ve been available since January), but with dropping numbers, we assume it’s not. Total sales during the first quarter were 7,081. If the sales in the U.S. do not increase, Japan has a chance to take over in cumulative sales by the end of this year (currently at 122,222 since the LEAF’s introduction in 2010). US total sales are at 133,000." https://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-sales-in-japan-decreased-4th-consecutive-month-in-march-2019/ FORD MUSTANG MACH-E, EMBLEM TRADEMARKS HINT AT ELECTRIFIED FUTURE "The Ford Mustang Mach-E might be the branding for the Blue Oval's upcoming hybrid powertrain. The info comes from the automaker's recent trademark applications in the United States and Europe." asks Motor1.com: "Ford filed for the rights to "Mustang Mach-E" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 29, 2019, and with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on April 1, 2019. Both of them protect the name for "motor vehicles, namely, electric vehicles, passenger automobiles, trucks, sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles, and structural parts, fittings, and badges therefor; metal license plate frames." At the same time in Europe, Ford filed for a trademark on a stylized Mustang emblem. The design takes the familiar look and adds a series of lines through the horse's body. Filing for two Mustang-related trademarks at the same time makes it seem like the logo and Mustang Mach-E could be related." What did Ford let slip in Amsterdam? For starters, Mustang-based is the key term here. It will be built on a dedicated platform with dimensions "similar – but not identical – to the current-generation Mustang. Nor will it be called Mustang, or rather, we don’t think Ford will make that leap. We’ve been told it doesn’t have an official name yet." https://www.motor1.com/news/329150/ford-mustang-mach-e-trademark/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Thursday 10th May 2018. FULLY CHARGED DRIVE MERCEDES EQC Only yesterday I was talking about a 1min long YouTube video, all shaky and blurry, showing the Mercedes EQC. With me like a numpty going on about how the bonnet looks too long for an EV. And then a few hours later Fully Charged released 20 mins of gorgeousness as Jonny Smith got in the passenger seat. As they say: "Jonny Smith goes for a ride in the Mercedes-Benz EQC. This SUV is the first Mercedes EV to be built from the ground up and it will the first of the new range of electrified cars to be announced later this year. The EQC is still in testing so this is a very early look at what is to come in the near future." Jonny's style is SO good, relaxed and asking the odd cheeky question, getting bits of info out of PR people who are notoriously tight lipped. I was talking to someone recently about him, someone I know who work on car magazine, and I was saying how Johnny is the best of the best when it comes to telling the story of a car...and then my friend tells me Jonny used to work for him on a magazine. And yes, he also confirmed, he's a bit of a legend. Anyway away from my mancrush and back to the Mercedes EQC. I’m about to say a couple of details from the vid, so if you’d rather, stop the podcast now. Johnny started off by saying it was their first proper EV, which I’ve said before, and got corrected by a very generous listener - rather than telling me I am an idiot, he sent me a pic of his B250. So yes, this isn't Mercedes first EV. Things we learn from the video, it's a 70kWh pack which seems small They want 500km or 310miles from that, which sounds optimistic? That would be 14kWh per 100km. The Model X is something like 380km with a pack 5kWh larger. The person who was doing the driving and most of the talking was the lead engineer, which was refreshing, as he wasn't a typical PR media type with a perfect answer which says a lot without saying anything, everything he said has value. Typical engineer. And bear in mind English is not his first language. Talking about the engineer who was driving it, he kept stabbing the accelerator and giving Jonny that burst of EV power, and every time he did it gave a little smile. Yesterday on the podcast I commented that the bonnet is too long, they could make it smaller and just have a crash structure, which makes more room for the cabin. That was explained because the platform will be used for electric, hybrid and gas. Under the hood or bonnet is a cradle that fits where the combustion engine fits, so Mercedes can use the same production line and drop in the powertrain. And…Jonny ends up on his hand and knees. But I won’t spoilt THAT surprise. Finally if you haven’t been watching Fully Charged, go onto YouTube, go back a few years and see Robert talking about trying to cajole PR departments to return calls or play ball with lending him vehicles. Fast forward and they have the best videos than any TV show, a live event soon and a massive Patreon supporter base. Huge congrats to Robert, Jonny, Mark, Dan and the team for creating a great channel. It's another gorgeous video with some classy tracking shots and they've got the drone up. BMW WIRELESS CAR CHARGING COMING SOON Car Magazine reports that BMW will debut it's wireless charging in July this year, and it's set to work with BMW PHEV's. The Car Magazine article says: "BMW sources told CAR today (May 8) that the tech is indeed headed for our market, and will be available exclusively on a leasing deal with a 5-series 530e iPerformance. To start with, that is". Wireless charging can be as good as a home Level 2 charger at 7.7kW, although this BMW systen works at 3.5kW for a full charge in 3-4hrs. There's leeway on being over the charging pad but cameras will guide into you the correct position. Well worth following CAR on socials, they are some of the best out there for great content. GOVERNMENT APPROVES GREEN LICENCE PLATES FOR E-VEHICLES In India they have confirmed green plates for EVs, private electric cars and EV cabs. "The purpose behind distinctive number plates is their easy identification for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones besides other proposed benefits like concessional toll, the road transport" says MoneyControl.com. This is what we need here for ICE cars parking in electric charging bays. If we all had green plates and legislation to keep EVs in certain spaces, it would mean those ICE cars would get tickets or towed. THE 'DRY ANALYST' WANTS ROUND TWO WITH ELON Dry Dave wants another go with Elon. I didn't actually catch the name of the analyst on the Tesla earning call who got cut off by Elon for asking a dry question, so we'll call him Dry Dave for now. I’ll Google him whilst talking. Anyway, he's p'eed off. And you don't want an upset analyst because, well, who knows what they do? Anyway, now Dry Dave has written an open letter to Elon - which sounds a bit needy already - he says "I continue to hold Tesla accountable for implementing a strategic vision that aligns with an ability to execute at scale. Name the time and place and I will be there, along with every one of your major shareholders." He's also sent Elon a set of written questions which I imagine he'll hope are more...I don’t know…wet? Somehow I don't think Elon will even give this a second of his time. Ah here we are, his name is Joseph Spek apparently. Spekky! I wouldn't hold your breath for that call Super Speks. GERMANY'S MERKEL SEES CHANCE FOR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY PRODUCTION IN EUROPE German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that German car makers are moving into a better position for battery production. The actual cells inside batteries all come from South Korea or China. Volkswagen-owned truck maker Scania said earlier this year it is investing 10m Euro as part of a 4bn Euro project to build Europe's biggest battery cell plant in northern Sweden. ONE THIRD OF IRISH DRIVERS PLAN TO BUY A FULL-ELECTRIC CAR IN NEAR FUTURE Yesterday we told you how 50million, or 20% of Americans are considering an EV for their next car. Now the Irish Mirror says: "One in three Irish motorists planning on buying a new car in the near future will go for a full-electric vehicle, according to a new survey. A total of 37% of people questioned said they will buy an electrified car next time around." NEW LAW TO SEE ELECTRIC CARS MAKE MORE NOISE "From July 2019, all new electric and hybrid vehicles sold in Europe must be equipped with sound devices. Older electric cars must also be retrofitted with sound devices by 2021" says Garage Wire. Kevin Clinton of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “The greatest risks associated with electric vehicles are when they are travelling at low speeds, such as in urban areas with lower limits, as the noise from tyres and the road surface, and aerodynamic noise, are minimal at those speeds" But you do still have eyes. I do think we need to consider those who are visually impaired. But making every single car emit white noise is going to be irritating. Driving around a city you never get another 20mph, and with the windows down, your EV would actually be louder than an ICE car. Multiply that by every other car on the road. All we’ll hear is buzzes and beeps and white noise. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 22nd March 2018. MUSK PAYDAY NEWS! His payday has been approved for a nominal value of $2.6bn, however that could be as much as $55bn worth of shares if he hits all the targets of Tesla being worth a mind-blowing $650bn. Including his current holding and presuming he doesn’t sell any shares, Elon Musk would then own 28% of Tesla, worth $182bn. As of 2017 the World’s richest person is Amazon’s Jezz Bezos at $112bn. VW EGOLF OFF THE MENU We’ll start with some good news about e-Golf sales, but if you’re listening in North America wanted to drive a new VW eGolf you better be quick. According to insight from InsideEVs, sales have been so strong here in Europe, they are almost out of stock. After all it was the best selling BEV in Western Europe according to InsideEVs sales scorecard. VW chairman Herbert Diess said: ““Our electric vehicle sales were three times more popular in 2017 than 2016 and the e-Golf nearly sold out, so it’s clear customers are willing to switch to EVs once the price is right.” NEXT STEPS FOR BMW Fresh news from just a few hours ago, at BMW’s Annual Accounts Press Conference they confirmed their next electric car will be the iX3. Then we’ll get the i4, previously known as the i Vision Dynamics. The only look we’ve had at it is in pure, utterly bonkers concept car form, but if the production EV was anywhere near it, it’s going to look great. From one pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) now in the guise of the i3, the i4 will be one of 12 battery-electric models BMW aims to have in showrooms by 2025. BMW CEO Harald Krueger said the i4 will be produced at the BMW's factory in Munich where it builds 3- and 4-series models. There’s also the electric MINI going into production in 2019, made here in the UK in Oxford as well as Mexico, before the electric version of the X3, the iX3, to be unveiled this year and available in 2020. In 2021 comes the iNEXT as their innovation flagbearer. But he wouldn’t say where in that timeline the i4 sits. BMW do expect, within 3 years, pure electric ranges will be 435 miles as the norm and 62miles normal for PHEVs. Autonews say BMW has secured naming rights for the badges i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9. VW FACTORY INVESTMENT IN USA According to Fortune VW will be investing $340million in their Chattanooga factory to build a 5-seater SUV. At the New York International Auto Show on 30th March we’ll see their new SUV concept based on the MQB platform, which of course is designed for hybrid and PHEV options. The Chattanooga factory has been viewed as the likely location for VW’s plan to produce electric vehicles. POD POINT BREAK RECORDS In the UK, charging provider Pod Point has installed 67 charge points for Skanska, and it looks like it breaks the record for the largest in the country. And one of the largest in Europe too. It took them 2 weeks to install the 7kW chargers but, the key detail, they also included the infrastructure to add another 243 more. That would be 310 charge points in one location for Skanska employees to charge their cars whilst they work. Erik Fairbairn, chief executive of Pod Point, said: “This is the largest single site charge point installation that we’re aware of in the UK, but also a sign of a larger shift over the past six months, as more businesses wake up to the benefits of EVs. We’ve certainly seen a big increase in enquiries from companies wanting future proof charge point installations that can be scaled up as their fleets make the switch to electric.” Utility Week say “Recent research commissioned by Ovo Energy suggests existing EVs in the UK could contribute more than 114MW to the National Grid, enough to power over 300,000 homes. HYUNDAI ELECTRIFIES THE TUCSON “Hyundai will present the facelifted version of the third-gen Tucson next week” according to CarScoops, “on March 28, during a press conference at the New York Auto Show, which will be streamed live. The crossover slots between the Kona and Santa Fe Sport has been spied numerous times in prototype form with heavy camouflage covering its body. Hyundai has also confirmed hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the SUV”. “The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric will join the other two in New York. The zero emission vehicle comes straight from the Geneva Motor Show, where it was revealed with a 133hp (135PS) electric motor and 39.2kWh battery pack. This version can be driven for up to 186miles (300km), whereas the long-range variant can travel up to 292miles (470km) and uses a 201hp (204PS) electric motor, paired to a 64kWh battery pack. As a final note, you can watch Hyundai’s press conference, which starts on March 28, at 12:45pm EST (5:45pm CET)” on CarScoops.com BMW 3-SERIES SPIED Finally the all new BMW 3-series has been spotted testing in the concept form and in full-on camo gear. This car will be huge for BMW. It simple must be a huge success. They want Audi A4 buyers to choose the 3-series instead, same for Merc C-Class buyers. It’s all new from the ground up. I have no doubt there will be a strong emphasis on plug ins and hybrids in the range. The hybrid tech might be the mildest of mild, just a 48v system to run systems and take the pressure of the ICE, or to do things like spool up the turbo ready for when the engine needs it. Anything which gets the CO2 down under the new WLTP emissions system which all cars must use from September this year. Since the first version of the Ford Fusion Energi in 2013 not much has happened on their electric front. Well, nothing actually apart from announcements. Now they’re updating it for the 2019 model year which includes a Hybrid and Phev. The Fusion Energi, the only plug in Ford sell now the C-Max Energi is no more, gets a very little battery bump. From 7.6kWH to 7.9kWH. It sits in the same space as before but, considering other auto makers like Renault have done the same but with much bigger capacity increases, like the new LEAF or the Zoe ZE40, at least we know the technology exists to do that. It’s an EPA range of 25 electric miles. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. California Governor Jerry Brown signs an executive order which commits the state to 3 million zero-emission vehicles on the roads by 2030. And not to be out done, Colorado is in the news with their own 2030 target. In Scotland, UK, a housing developer says all new builds will have the cabling infrastructure in place for 7kW chargers. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume see the car market in 3 sectors, find out where he thinks EVs will fit in. Plus news about the next generation of Porsche 911 which will be a PHEV. Superbowl transport gets electrified. And finally global EV sales are in for 2017. Will BYD maintain their lead or will Tesla take the top spot? Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested. Camper on Tour - DER Podcast für Camper mit Dominic Bagatzky
Gasgeräte wie Grill, Heizung, Herd, usw. gibt es meist in zwei Ausführungen. Ein mal zum Betrieb mit 30mbar und ein mal mit 50mbar Gasdruck. Gerade für den Heim und Gartenbereich ist 50mbar eher üblich. 30mbar Geräte verwendet man ehe beim Camping.
