Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: December, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness moves from an immortal vampire said to haunt two centuries of high society, through history's most audacious prison escapes, into the bloody rise of a Las Vegas gambling kingpin, and ends among the haunted pews of America's churches. It opens in London in the early 1740s, where a man known as the Count of St. Germain charmed the upper classes with flawless violin playing, fluency in several languages, and a habit of handing out diamonds, prompting Horace Walpole — son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole — to describe him in a letter as odd and mad before the Count was arrested on suspicion of spying and released without charge. He surfaced next in Paris as a regular guest of Louis XV, working in a commissioned laboratory on fabric dyes and carrying out discreet missions, while gossip held that he could turn ordinary stones into jewels and had lived for hundreds or thousands of years, even claiming presence at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. After reported appearances aiding Catherine the Great in Russia and a friendship with Prince Charles of Hesse-Cassel in Germany, where he was said to die in 1784, the story jumps to early-1900s New Orleans and a wealthy newcomer named Jacques St. Germain, who threw lavish parties yet never ate or drank, claimed descent from the Count, and bore an uncanny resemblance to him. The account turns dark when a woman leapt from his balcony into the street, telling police he had bitten her neck; St. Germain vanished overnight, leaving his belongings behind and several open bottles that proved to hold a mixture of wine and blood. From there the episode trades immortality for ingenuity, walking through the boldest jailbreaks on record. It runs from the 2016 Orange County escape, where Jonathan Tieu, Bac Duong, and Hossein Nayeri cut through walls and rappelled to a sixteen-hour head start, to Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán slipping out of Altiplano through a mile-long lighted tunnel in 2015, and Clinton Correctional inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt crawling through a steam pipe with tools handed over by prison worker Joyce Mitchell. Ted Bundy jumped from a Colorado courthouse library window, John Dillinger bluffed his way out of an Indiana jail with a wooden pistol painted in shoe polish, and yoga master Choi Gap Bok greased himself and squeezed through a six-by-eighteen-inch food slot in thirty-four seconds. The larger breakouts carry heavier counts: three men vanished from Alcatraz in 1962 on a raft of raincoats, more than 480 Taliban prisoners filed out of Kandahar's Sarpoza Prison through a thousand-foot tunnel in 2011, over a thousand Japanese prisoners stormed the wire at Australia's Cowra camp in 1944, and inmates at the Nazi death camp Sobibor killed eleven SS guards with homemade knives before running for the treeline.Next the episode settles in Dallas and then Las Vegas with Lester Ben "Benny" Binion, the cowboy-hatted racketeer who founded the World Series of Poker and shot rival bootlegger Frank Bolding in the neck in 1931, walking away with a two-year suspended sentence and the nickname the Cowboy. He killed gambling competitor Ben Frieden in 1936 and beat the charge after witnesses vanished, ran dice games and bookies out of Dallas hotels for high rollers like Howard Hughes and H.L. Hunt, then moved to Las Vegas in 1946 and turned the Eldorado into the no-limit Horseshoe, laying down the first carpet in a Vegas casino. His feud with Dallas gambler Herbert "the Cat" Noble ran through eleven attempts on Noble's life and killed Noble's wife Mildred with a car bomb before a mailbox blast ended Noble in 1951. Binion died on Christmas Day 1989 and was carried to the cemetery behind six black horses, while his son Ted was found dead in 1998 in a case that convicted Sandy Murphy and Rick Tabish of burglary but acquitted them of the slaying, with the missing silver bullion never recovered. The episode closes inside America's churches, where worship shares the building with the dead. At Most Holy Trinity in Brooklyn, built over a former cemetery, parishioners report the spirit of clerk George Stelz, murdered in 1897, alongside bells that ring on their own and a bloody handprint in the bell tower stairway. The Washington National Cathedral carries the echo of Woodrow Wilson's cane and charred figures from a 1946 fire, while New Orleans' St. Louis Cathedral is tied to voodoo queen Marie Laveau, socialite Delphine Lalaurie, and six men executed on its grounds. At St. Mark's Episcopal in Cheyenne, a Swedish immigrant is said to have sealed his dead coworker inside the unfinished bell tower wall to avoid deportation, and at St. Paul's Chapel in New York — where George Washington prayed on his inauguration day — the spirit of actor George Frederick Cooke is said to wander still, his actual skull having traveled from a Philadelphia medical library and, by lore, onto the stage as a prop in Hamlet.

This week we're doing things a little differently. We're taking a look at two crucial queer short films and a feature from the time before the Stonewall Riots forced the gay liberation struggle to the fore. We're looking at Fireworks, a 1947 avant garde short from one of LA's weirdest guys, Kenneth Anger. Next up is Picnic, a 1948 silent short from Curt Harrington, director of What's The Matter With Helen. We wrap things up with Winter Kept Us Warm, the Canadian feature from David Secter. It's an important film in the history of queer cinema as well as Canadian cinema. It was the first Canadian movie to run at Cannes and influenced many Canadian filmmakers that followed. Host Don Adeesha sits down with Kara Kelly, CEO of Clinical HR, to tackle the people problems that quietly derail aesthetic practices, from the moment a clinician becomes a reluctant manager to the chaos of a private equity acquisition. Kara brings fifteen-plus years of direct experience inside med spas and medical practices, and she pulls no punches on the compliance traps that cost owners real money before they ever see an audit coming. The conversation goes deep on the W2 versus 1099 misclassification issue, one of the most widespread and expensive mistakes in the aesthetic industry. Kara walks through a real-world case where a five-location practice was hit with a $142,000 IRS penalty for misclassifying just 13 providers, explains why signed contracts and S-Corps offer zero protection, and outlines the SS-8 filing process and the step-by-step path to correcting classification before the letter arrives. Kara closes with her HR ETA framework, clear Expectations, the right Tools and Training, and consistent Accountability, as the foundation every practice owner needs before they hire their next team member, restructure their compensation model, or close on an acquisition. Her central message: the practices that build great cultures do not do it by reacting to problems. They do it by writing the rules before the game starts.
You’re listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for June 16, 2026. We open with Hollywood's next election cycle project — Sean Penn and Warner Brothers are producing a film about January 6th from the perspective of an anti-Trump police officer, described as based on a real person but fictionalized. We discuss what an honest January 6th film would actually require — including the FBI coming clean about how many informants were in that crowd, whether they incited the violence, and why that information has been withheld from both Congress and defendants. We also note that the FBI agent who ran the Gretchen Whitmer kidnapping sting — which a Michigan appeals court just threw out — was the head FBI agent in Washington D.C. on January 6th. Do we trust Sean Penn to tell that story? We already know the answer. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, the FBI disrupted a terrorist plot to attack the UFC fight on the White House lawn — suspects planned to use explosive-laden drones to drive survivors into sniper fire, with 23 people named as suspects arrested across Ohio, California, Missouri, and Nebraska. Then President Trump arrived in France for the G7 summit, where topics include the Iran peace deal, Russia-Ukraine, and energy security — with French President Macron already looking for alternative routes to move Middle Eastern oil that don't depend on the Strait of Hormuz. And 15 Antifa members were arrested in Minnesota and charged with conspiracy to injure federal law enforcement officers after attempting to block immigration enforcement operations earlier this year. We also cover James Carville's latest prediction that President Trump will resign by Easter of 2027 — bored, tired, distracted, and facing political collapse. We point out that Carville appears to be describing his own audience, not the man who negotiated an Iran peace deal, hosted a UFC fight on the White House lawn, and is still running laps around every critic who has ever declared him finished. Our American Mama Teri Netterville responds to the competing events on the same weekend as the UFC fight — the anti-Trump Hollywood rally featuring Bette Midler, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, and Julia Roberts telling the crowd to breathe in the love and breathe out the fear. Teri asks where this outrage was when men with surgical implants were flashing the White House lawn on Easter during the Biden administration. She researched the cultural events Obama hosted at the White House — and says she's glad he did them. Her only point is that if a white president had done the same things specifically for white audiences, the left would have called it a scandal. The hypocrisy is the story. We also cover Major League Baseball warning San Francisco Giants pitchers for displaying Bible verses on their caps during Pride Night — and connect it to a broader question about whose expression gets protected and whose gets punished — including the founding principle that rights come from the Creator, not from government, and why that matters the moment you try to elect someone who doesn't believe in a Creator at all. In our Digging Deep segment, we document the cascading consequences of the FDA's Biden-era decision to allow abortion pills to be shipped through the mail without an in-person doctor visit. We walk through a documented series of cases — a woman trying to secretly give her ex-boyfriend's girlfriend an abortion pill, a man who pretended to be a woman online to obtain the pills and then told his pregnant girlfriend they were supplements, a doctor who tried to feed the pills to his sleeping mistress, and a DOJ employee accused of baking the pills into cookies for his girlfriend. Her baby died two days later. We make the case that in their zeal to make abortion as easy as possible, the left has created a system that makes it easier to force abortions on women who don't want them — which is a direct contradiction of every argument they've ever made. We also cover a Cornell University student who refused a job interview and then told the employer he wasn't interested in working for a Jew — then doubled down when given a chance to walk it back. A crowdfunding campaign raised over $13,000 to reward him. We note that the Maine Democratic Party just nominated a man with an SS tattoo for Senate, endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and connect the dots on where mainstreaming anti-Semitism leads. For our Bright Spot, a high school junior in Charlotte painted Live Like Kirk and a Bible verse on her school's spirit rock with prior permission — and was then treated like a criminal, forced out of class, and made to surrender her phone logs. The Alliance Defending Freedom took the case. The school board adopted a new speech policy, issued a public statement exonerating the student, and paid $95,000 in damages and fees. The Alliance Defending Freedom wins again. And we close with Jim Freeman, a fourth grade teacher at Tully Elementary in Louisville, who isn't even Ryan Neighbors' teacher — but when he heard that Ryan, who has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, would have to miss the school field trip to the Falls of the Ohio State Park, he bought a specialized backpack and carried her through the park himself. You’re listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for June 15, 2026. We open with a major Supreme Court immigration case heading into the next term — the question of whether non-citizens with serious criminal convictions can be held in detention during deportation proceedings without bond hearings. We explain why this isn't a simple bumper sticker case, why the flight risk argument for criminal aliens is fundamentally different from that of U.S. citizens with community roots, and why the ruling could become one of the most consequential immigration decisions of the new term — directly testing how much process is due before temporary custody starts looking like indefinite imprisonment. We also get into President Trump's peace deal with Iran, and why Barack Obama's claim that this is essentially the same deal he negotiated is not just wrong but precisely backwards. Obama's deal had a time limit on nuclear development — legally allowing Iran to have a bomb by 2030. Trump's deal requires Iran to destroy its highly enriched uranium, pledge never to obtain nuclear weapons, stop funding Hezbollah and Hamas, and open the Strait of Hormuz immediately upon signing — with economic relief only after the first two conditions are fully met. No cash on the runway. No expiration date. Not the same deal. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, President Trump announced a peace agreement with Iran over the weekend — covering the five key points — with a final signing expected in Switzerland on Friday. Then a B-52 Stratofortress crashed in Southern California after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base, with military officials saying the crash was unsurvivable — we offer our prayers and gratitude to the crew. And President Trump endorsed Congressman Mike Collins in the Georgia Senate Republican runoff against Derek Dooley, a former football coach who admits he didn't vote in either 2016 or 2020. We walk through the five pillars of the Iran deal in detail — destruction of highly enriched uranium, a permanent pledge never to obtain nuclear weapons, ending the naval blockade only after the first two steps are complete, immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz upon signing, and a requirement that Iran stop funding all terrorist proxies including Hezbollah and Hamas. We note what makes this deal structurally different from every previous Iran negotiation — enforcement is built into the sequencing, not assumed as an afterthought. Our American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson discuss whether women should still take their husband's last name when they marry — prompted by viral videos of couples doing rock-paper-scissors and tug-of-war at their own weddings to decide whose name to use. The Spinks Sisters kept their maiden names as middle names, missed them immediately, and are pretty clear on where they stand. We also explore what it signals about a marriage when a woman doesn't take her husband's name — and why in Washington especially, different last names make it a lot harder to spot the conflicts of interest. In our Digging Deep segment, we take on the left's use of adjectives to alter meaning and control thought — starting with the phrase progressive Christianity versus Christian right. We work through why these two constructions mean completely different things, why the need for the adjective tells you the noun isn't what's being advertised, and how a pastor writing in Salon Magazine misquotes Jesus — changing blessed are the poor in spirit to blessed are the poor — to make Christ's words align with progressive ideology. We connect it to George Orwell's observation that whoever controls the language controls the masses, and explain why this linguistic sleight of hand is one of the left's most effective political tools. We also note that Bill Maher is endorsing Graham Plattner — the Maine Democratic Senate candidate with the SS tattoo and the predator website — and explain that this isn't about principle. It's about keeping Susan Collins out of the Senate. Power, not values. We also push back on Robert De Niro's claim that loving America today is like an abused spouse loving an abuser — and point out that conservatives who disagreed with everything Obama and Biden did never stopped saying they loved their country. Disagreeing with your leaders and loving your country are not the same thing. They never have been. For our Bright Spot, the U.S. Men's National Team beat Paraguay 4-1 in the World Cup — the most goals the U.S. has ever scored in a World Cup match, with Florian Balogun scoring two in the first half. But the moment that mattered most came after the final whistle, when the entire team circled up in the middle of the field and prayed. Defender Mark McKenzie, whom teammates call pastor, led the prayer. On the biggest stage in the world, the U.S. team's first instinct was gratitude. We contrast that with Diego Maradona, who scored a goal with his hand and called himself a god. We'll take our team. And we close with Emily Matijovic, a 16-year-old from Michigan who passed away in December and whose family chose to donate her organs. This spring — the spring she was supposed to graduate — her family threw her a graduation party. Four-year-old Ripley Farrell came from West Virginia. She received one of Emily's kidneys. Teenager Landon Coleman came from Virginia. He received Emily's heart. He told her family it lets him do things he couldn't do before. It is in giving that we receive. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. Federal retirement planning at 60: if you're a year or two from retiring from federal service with a FERS pension, Social Security, and about $1M saved in your TSP, here are 5 decisions to make before you retire — so you stop asking "Am I okay?" and start building the retirement you actually want. This covers income order, TSP taxes and RMDs, Roth conversions, FEHB and Medicare timing, and IRMAA — gaps many federal employees miss before retiring.Apply for a Retirement Consultation: https://perspectivefunnel.co/682642d22275ec003bfa6626/691df07396253e003c42b434/?ps_hello=THE 5 DECISIONSYour numbers look fine — but you still don't feel okay. That's the gap we're closing.1) Income order — You've got three engines: your FERS pension, Social Security, and TSP. The pension turns on the day you retire. Social Security has a filing window from 62 to 70 — thousands of dollars a month for life. TSP is the lever you control. The real question: which do you draw from first, and which do you let grow?2) Taxes & RMDs — Required minimum distributions start between age 73 and 75 (depending on your birth year) from your Traditional TSP, IRA, and 401(k). They land on top of your pension and Social Security, which can push you into a higher bracket in retirement. The years before then are your Roth conversion / sequencing window. And IRMAA is a real Medicare surcharge that hits about two years later.3) Healthcare — FEHB is gold and stays with you in retirement. Medicare enters at 65: do you take Part B, skip it, or coordinate with FEHB? Miss the enrollment window and there's a late-enrollment penalty. Decide before the deadline, not after.4) Investments — You're shifting from accumulation to distribution. The portfolio that got you here often isn't the one that should carry you through retirement. Rethink risk and your TSP fund mix so a bad market doesn't force you to sell at the wrong time.5) Purpose — Plan what you're retiring TO, not just what you're retiring from. We've seen federal employees retire with $1M and go back to work in six months — no Monday-morning plan. Money is half the equation; structure, identity, and what's on your calendar are the other half.WHAT TO DO THIS MONTH: Lock your exact retirement date. Run three tax pictures (year one, when Social Security starts, when TSP/IRA withdrawals begin — and how much to withhold). Map your income order. Make the FEHB + Medicare call early. Write down your first 90 days on a calendar, not a spreadsheet. Do it intentionally, not perfectly.CHAPTERS0:00 Age 60, a Federal Pension, and $1M Saved — What Comes Next?0:27 Your Numbers Look Fine but Still Feel Unclear0:38 Decision 1 — Your Federal Retirement Income Order (Pension, SS, TSP)1:46 Decision 2 — TSP Taxes, RMDs, Roth Conversions & IRMAA2:46 Decision 3 — FEHB, Medicare Part B & Healthcare Timing3:34 Decision 4 — Shifting From Accumulation to Distribution5:38 Decision 5 — Planning What You're Retiring To6:19 What to Do This Month Before You Retire6:42 Apply for a Federal Retirement ConsultationMORE RESOURCESFederal Retirement Guidebook: https://cdfinancial.org/being-a-federal-employee-book/Take the Checklist Challenge: https://cdfinancial.org/checklist-challenge/Weekly Federal Retirement Planning Newsletter: https://cdfinancial.com/newsletterOPM Retirement Center: https://www.opm.gov/retirement-center/OPM FERS Information: https://www.opm.gov/retirement-center/fers-information/Social Security Full Retirement Age: https://www.ssa.gov/retirement/full-retirement-ageMedicare Late Enrollment Penalties: https://www.medicare.gov/basics/costs/medicare-costs/avoid-penaltiesWHO WE ARECD Financial helps federal employees and retirees make smarter retirement decisions around FERS, TSP, FEHB, Medicare, survivor benefits, and retirement income planning. We continue our Pride 2026 examination of queer horror with a look at a truly unique film, a movie that challenged us in every conceivable way. If you, the listener, can make it to the end of this one without being totally alienated, consider yourself a true Bring Me The Axe fan. Thundercrack! is the collision of underground filmmakers Curt McDowell and George Kuchar. McDowell, a truly horny underground filmmaker was known for his art films containing no small amount of explicit unsimulated sex and George Kuchar was known for outrageous, ugly send-ups of "women's pictures" and melodramas. Together they made an old dark house horror movie with no small amount of body hair and body fluids. There's no small amount of sex in this movie and man alive is it gross. Thundercrack! is a hard movie to explain. It finds several pairs of strangers stranded at the home of a mentally ill woman, a house bursting at the seams with secrets. Each one of them brings their own secrets to complicate matters. There's Roo and Sash, a pair of ladies desperate for men they cannot have. There's Chandler and Bond, the former seeking vengeance for the death of his wife, the latter desperate to have sex with Chandler. There's Toydy and Bing, a man who just wants to get behind that locked door in the living room and a man haunted by a circus gorilla that he is deeply in love with. It is a long night of madness and sex culminating in every secret boiling over at the surface. We can confidently say that there is nothing like it anywhere. Thundercrack! is a true original, a puerile lo-fi nightmare that defies you to watch it.
