Kathy had a huge job in advertising which took her all over the world. But behind the glamour and fabulous hotels Kathy was suffering from burnout. One routine trip to the doctors changed everything – I'll let Kathy tell you what happened but Kathy knew she had to make a change. This change she found was in vegetables. Yes, vegetables! Gorgeous, colourful, wonderful veg. Her fascination of watching them grow and then creating delicious recipes with them, it turned out was the medicine she needed. When she was better, she went to cookery school and then became a food writer. Kathy created a wonderful website and has had partnerships with places like Waitrose. She wrote a cookbook From The Veg Patch which was named one of Delicious Magazines Top Picks of 2021, she takes part in festivals and has also held regular supper clubs. Plus she has a wonderful blog - Tales From A Veg Patch filled with wonderful recipes for us all. Kathy is open, honest and brave. She tells us what life really was like in the world of advertising (i.e was it like Madmen?) and the reality of life as a freelancer. But best of all Kathy shows even in the darkest moments, we can find light, sunshine and even a new path to a whole new life You can find out all about Kathy at: https://www.kathyslack.com/ And just in case you were wondering you can find me and my books at elliebarkerwrites.com

Multi-faceted artist Barbara Colaciello began her career working with Andy Warhol for six years at the Factory in NYC as the Advertising Director of Interview Magazine."Warhol actually pursued me for over two years. I was an actress with a BFA from Rider University working as a saleswoman at the Yves St Laurent boutique. I didn't know anything about publishing. But Andy loved talkers. And I was funny." - Barbara ColacielloWhile selling advertising for the Pope of Pop, Barbara continued to pursue her passion for acting and studied at Warren Robertson’s studio in NYC with acclaimed acting coach Larry Moss, and with director Peter Flood at the Real Stage. Sensing a lack of culture in her golf and tennis-oriented beach community, she founded an acting program in her home called Inter-Act. I'm so happy to know Barbara Colaciello, and happy to live on the diagonal.” ~ Daniel Austin, actor, director, educatorLife on the Diagonal celebrates life’s mysteries and imperfections with humor, sexuality and a little A.D.D. madness. Seamlessly integrating storytelling, and spoken word with her original music, Colaciello takes her listeners on an intense, yet funny journey through an experience-strewn landscape, into and beyond the “land of should”.In 2010, Players by the Sea and the Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens commissioned Barbara to research, write, and perform a solo show about the museum's founder, Ninah May Holden Cummer for the museum's 50th anniversary.Barbara's company, Improv to the Rescue, housed at BABS'LAB, specializes in experiential and creative learning to enhance communication skills, develop storytellers and encourage collaboration through workshops, classes and performances.

Brittany Gibson is the Executive Director of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Her experience with wine began as Advertising Director and Wine Club Manager at Fulkerson Winery, a position she held for 10 years. In her previous capacity at the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, Brittany was responsible for promoting Schuyler County’s tourism industry by creating and implementing tourism marketing and public relations programs. She was also responsible for developing and implementing programs to increase the visibility and credibility of the Chamber. Brittany serves on the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council Board of Directors, the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance Marketing Committee, the Schuyler County Planning Board, and the Community Development Corporation Board of Directors. She volunteers her time serving as the coordinator of her family’s charity organization, Team Charlie. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Brittany about the importance of partnership and “co-opetition” in promoting your destinations. Brittany explains how she sorts through the noise and keeps people coming back to Seneca Lake Wine Trail day after day. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Brittany’s experience of sorting through the noise and reaching the consumer as a travel marketer in the wine industry The power of partnership and co-opetition in Brittany’s marketing strategies for wine and tourism Why knowing your target audience and how to market to them is pivotal to your brand, with examples of Brittany’s “wine personas” Leveraging state and private partnerships to advance your brand Getting people engaged in your winery destinations, keeping them coming back, and growing your audience Brittany’s best practices on helping partnerships function well and how to take charge in cooperative situations Sorting Through the Noise As destination marketers, Brittany and I are both very familiar with the noise that surrounds what we do and how it can hurt the connection between us and the consumer. For Brittany, it was important to realize that the brand and its mission were about the consumer and reaching them in a simplistic and user-friendly way. Since starting her new job, Brittany and her team have staged a large-scale digital media buy to significantly increase Seneca Lake’s exposure to the public. In addition, Brittany has helped to launch a new website for the wine trail, giving consumers the opportunity to explore the wines and locations they’d like to try out. In focusing her marketing efforts, Brittany has zeroed in on three distinct “wine personas” in Seneca Lake’s target audience. The first persona, the next-generation or millennial wine drinker, is the future of the wine tasting business. The second, the “wine is life” persona, covers 35- to 50-year-old women who love immersive wine experiences as much as the wines themselves. The third persona, the fine vintage wine drinkers, are baby boomers who know their wines inside and out. The Power of Partnership Market research, media buys, and web development aren’t easy to do alone. For Brittany, one of the most valuable assets to making all these works is the partnership network Seneca Lake has created. In growing Seneca Lake Wine Trail as a destination, Brittany has partnered with our very own Break the Ice Media to craft Seneca Lake’s message through social media and website content. Alongside our partnership, Brittany has built connections with restaurants, tourist attractions, and chambers of commerce all around Seneca Lake. Brittany believes that by leveraging co-opetition with public and private partners, she and her team have helped turn Seneca Lake into a true tourist destination, not just a series of wineries. Brittany’s network of partners collaborates extremely well. To form and maintain such strong partnerships and cooperation, Brittany tells our audience to take charge, trust their instincts, and have confidence in their experience to be successful. If you’re never afraid to learn and ask questions, your partnerships and business will flourish. Last Monday we were a part of the fifth Prime Day that’s been run by Amazon so far and we can’t wait to tell you all about it. And what better guest to analyze this event with than Stefan Jordev, our Advertising Director here at Bobsled Marketing and a regular guest on the show. A lot of planning and preparation went on for several months during the build-up to the event, and fortunately, it went off well for Amazon this year. Last year, however, there were a lot of frustrating technical issues. This meant that brands that had paid big money for lightning deals and put a lot of effort into advertising campaigns, were disappointed when Amazon's website crashed. In today's episode, Stefan and Kiri discuss the effect of Prime Day on other retailers. Some of the major sites, like Nike, Best Buy, The Gap, and Macy's, saw a massive increase in traffic and sales this year. It seems that they have finally stopped resisting and that this year they have taken Prime Day seriously because they all came up with hype, sales, and good deals on the 15th and 16th of July. The data received from this year's Prime Day was encouraging and even Amazon appears to have benefited from their competitors running these deals. Tune in today to find out about the mutual benefits that so many platforms experienced from getting involved with Prime Day this year, and why it would be worth investing as much money as you can spare during future Prime Days. Summary Anthony Pretto is the Advertising Director and Operations Manager for Kobey's Swap Meet held at the Valley View Casino Center parking lot in San Diego. In this Episode I had the opportunity sit down and speak straight talk and business with the Lovely and very talented Lenora of Houston Forward Times. Her family story is that of Leadership, Tragedy, and Triumph and is simply amazing some of the things that they have contributed to the City of Houston and their Contributions to Civil Rights. The Houston Forward Times was founded in January 1960, under the leadership of the late founder and publisher, Julius P. Carter. Mr. Carter founded The Houston Forward Times as a means of uniting Black Houston to overcome the obstacles that were holding Blacks in the shackles of second class citizenry. He realized that Blacks could only overcome in unity, and needed a mechanism to communicate their needs to one another. Mr. Carter passed away suddenly in 1971 after catapulting Forward Times into the third major newspaper in Houston ― a weekly, only behind the two dailies. Lenora “Doll” Carter was the wife and successor of Julius P. Carter. Mr. Carter groomed Mrs. Carter as she served as General Manager and Advertising Director of The Forward Times. In 1971, at the tender age of twenty-nine, she became the CEO, managing editor and publisher of The Forward Times. Her doubters predicted that she would be out of business within six months. To their surprise, the business celebrated fifty years in business under her command. On April 10, 2010, in its fiftieth year of business, The Forward Times suffered a devastating blow when Mrs. Carter passed away unexpectedly. Just as Forward Times founder, Julius P. Carter trained his wife, Lenora “Doll” Carter to take the baton of leadership to keep moving forward, that legacy has now been passed on to their daughter, Karen Carter Richards, who worked alongside and shadowed her mother for over three decades. Today, Karen Carter Richards serves as CEO and Publisher of The Forward Times, the South’s largest Black owned and independently published newspaper. Karen has creatively expanded the mission of the Forward Times and has continued her family’s publishing legacy to ensure that it remains the strongest information vehicle and most trusted voice for African Americans in the city of Houston and throughout the southern region. The Forward Times has been the recipient of various local and national awards for journalistic and digital excellence, including best graphic designs, layout, and editorial excellence. In addition to being an award-winning and historic publication, The Forward Times boasts a paid circulation of roughly 65,000 and is one of the few publications that holds a second-class mailing permit to mail the newspapers directly into the homes of subscribers. The Forward Times holds memberships in the National Newspaper Publishers Association, Texas Press Service, Texas Publishers Association, Texas Business Alliance and Better Business Bureau. Her family's newspaper can also be found online at www.forwardtimes.com Named after her grand-mother, Lenora herself is a very talented singer and model and is very enriched in the entrepreneurship spirit.
