Welcome to the latest episode of the Stuck In My Mind Podcast, where host Wize El Jefe welcomes guest Steven Puri a man whose career has spanned Hollywood blockbusters, tech startups, successful exits, and daring entrepreneurial attempts. This episode is a masterclass in finding fulfillment, reclaiming focus, and redefining success amidst the noise and distraction of our modern world. A Journey from Blockbusters to Purpose Steven Puri opens up about his high-profile career, giving listeners a candid look at life behind the scenes. He's worked as an executive in major studios, produced well-known films, and raised millions for tech ventures. But rather than resting on these laurels, Steven Puri brings refreshing honesty about the realities of so-called "success": the burnout, the unfocused hustle, and the underlying unhappiness that often comes with chasing external achievements. His decision to pivot from Hollywood, where he ran iconic franchises like Die Hard and Wolverine, to founding a platform dedicated to flow states and true fulfillment marks a turning point: “I reached a point where I wanted to do something where people came to me and said, 'Hey man, because of what you did, I was able to actually do the thing I was meant to do.'” The Battle for Your Attention and Your Life In one of the episode's most thought-provoking segments, Steven Puri and Wize El Jefe dissect the ways major tech companies and apps have mastered the art of distraction, essentially making it their business model to "steal your life." From endless scrolling to addictive dopamine hits, we're reminded just how easy it is to lose hours—or even years—to platforms designed to capture our attention, often at the expense of our deeper goals. Unlocking Flow States and Redefining Success What's the antidote? Steven Puri shares his deep dive into the concept of "flow state" those rare moments when we're fully immersed, productive, and genuinely satisfied. Inspired by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's seminal work, Steven Puri explains the science and spirit of flow, revealing how artists, athletes, and inventors across disciplines describe these states in strikingly similar ways. He delivers actionable advice: forget multitasking (a myth sold by hustle culture), embrace monotasking, and begin each day by identifying the one thing that will move your life forward. These practical steps, backed by his tech platform the Suka Company, help listeners shift from depletion and regret (“Where did the day go?”) to empowerment and joy (“I crushed it today and can spend time with my family.”). Podcasting, Creativity, and the Power of Community In a touching exchange, Wize El Jefe shares his own journey from a furloughed casino pit boss to a podcaster investing in quality and community. The hosts discuss how investing in yourself and your craft pays dividends—not just in the quality of your work, but in the connections and impact you create. From networking at Podfest to collaborating with his nephew, Wize El Jefe highlights how stepping outside your comfort zone can ignite creative energy and open new doors. Their conversation explores how creativity and focus aren't rivals they feed each other, and nurturing both is essential for success in the AI age. Steven Puri draws on neuroscience to explain the balance between free association and executive function, sharing anecdotes from film and tech about how the best ideas often come when you're not directly engaged with the task. Challenges of the Future—and Reasons for Hope Not shying away from the big issues, Steven Puri expresses concern about the rise of AI and large language models, warning that jobs centered on rote pattern-matching are vulnerable, and urging listeners to double down on distinctly human strengths: creativity, strategic thinking, and community. While his views on the economy and tech landscape are sobering, his faith in people's innate potential remains strong. Takeaways for Anyone Who Feels Stuck Ultimately, the episode is an invitation to reflect, recharge, and recalibrate. If you're feeling overwhelmed, overworked, or disconnected, Steven Puri offers clear guidance: each morning, identify the one thing that will genuinely advance your life, and let that guide your focus and energy for the day. Reclaim control from the apps, demands, and distractions; invest in yourself and your relationships; and don't die with your greatness left inside you. Connect and Continue the Conversation As the episode closes, listeners are invited to reach out directly Steven Puri makes his email public and welcomes questions from anyone interested in learning more about flow states or focus. For those ready to put the tools and mindset into practice, his Suka Company website offers resources and community to help you start building the life you actually want. Why You Should Listen This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to break free from the cult of busy, escape the digital vortex, and start living with intention and fulfillment. Whether you're a creator, entrepreneur, executive, or everyday achiever, the candid stories, researched insights, and authentic wisdom from both Steven Puri and Wize El Jefe will motivate you to rethink what success means and how to claim it on your own terms. Share this episode with someone struggling behind the scenes but winning on the outside. It's a heartfelt, energizing conversation packed with relatable anecdotes, actionable strategies, and a blueprint for getting unstuck—so you can stay grounded, curious, and empowered.

This week on Imagination State, we are joined by Amelia Hruby - feminist writer, podcaster, and creator of Off the Grid, a podcast and community for people reclaiming their attention from social media. With Off the Grid and as the founder of Softer Sounds, Amelia helps artists and entrepreneurs build thriving creative lives beyond the extractive attention economies of social media. A former philosophy professor and the author of Fifty Feminist Mantras, Amelia's work spans feminist philosophy, digital well-being, and spiritual practice. In our conversation, Amelia revisits her imagination origins, from her early days in North Carolina to Chicago, where activism, feminist theory, and community radio reshaped her worldview and creative practice. She shares how she came to see social media as fundamentally misaligned with her values of liberation, gentleness, and integrity and what happened when she finally decided to leave. We talk about imagination and attention: what we lose when we outsource our creativity to platforms, what opens up when we escape, and how podcasts and voice can create spaces of connection that resist the flattening effects of screen living. This episode is for anyone who has ever wondered what we give up when we spend one month of every year in billionaire-controlled social media landscapes, and what becomes possible when we step into a different world altogether.Imagination Invitation:Amelia invites you to keep a “should diary.” For one day, write down every time you think I should… or I shouldn't. Our daughter is almost 5 months old now, and she's the greatest thing in the whole world. I am so lucky and blessed that I get to be her mom. Do you know WHY I end every episode with ‘I appreciate you, thank you for spending some time with me today?' (I borrowed this from Lewis Howes' School of Greatness podcast) I'm now aware that it's because our ATTENTION is our most valuable asset. Some may argue that it's time, others may say it's money. But to me, our ATTENTION is more valuable than both. Because with time, we can spend time together and both be scrolling on our phones or watching TV or reading. With money, well there are plenty of ways to make and spend money quickly, and you can always earn more money. Time is a very limited asset. Attention is a VALUABLE asset. Your attention is why companies can advertise during the superbowl for millions of dollars. Your ATTENTION is why tick tok and instagram and facebook want you on their platforms, so their advertisers can reach you and grab your attention. Your ATTENTION is why there are panic headlines and paywalls behind them. Where you spend your attention directly impacts the quality of your life. As we're becoming parents and figuring out how we want to foster and guide our baby, it's becoming clear that she's right now, too little to understand much of what we say. She certainly understands who we are and what we do. It's evident by the giant smile that takes up her whole face when we greet her from a nap, or when we come home from work. She knows it's us. And because she's our baby, we give her TONS of attention. But if we walked into the room and ignored her, or didn't look up from our phones or our book or stayed on the phone with a friend or colleague, we're showing our daughter what's important to us by where are ATTENTION is. So I end every episode with gratitude towards you, because if you're choosing to spend your most valuable asset with me (in my eyes, it's your attention)

In this solo episode, Mark interviews Joe Solari about his new book May I Have a Moment of Your Attention? Prior to the main content, Mark shares comments from recent episodes and then reflects on the reasons why he canceled a trip he was supposed to take to Florida to attend NINC (Novelist's Inc.) This episode is sponsored by the Patrons of the Stark Reflections Podcast. In their conversation, Mark and Joe talk about: Joe's winding experience path, the long journey he has been on, and how there's no way you could possibly train for the job that Joe does The daily roadblocks that Joe had to overcome as he was beginning to learn about the complex writing and publishing business The importance of not assuming that the person on stage actually knows what they're talking about Also not assuming that what you "need" is what you're seeing presented on that "stage" Joe's very first 20BooksVegas conference (which he has been to since the very beginning of it) How Joe feels that we're still in the early stages of the entire self-publishing landscape Understanding different formats, like audio, where the consumers aren't necessarily readers, but do enjoy story The value of recognizing the assets in your business, which includes the asset of AUDIENCE and the related importance of DEMAND How ads aren't scaleable, but that audiences are scaleable Joe's latest book MAY I HAVE A MOMENT OF YOUR ATTENTION and how it's only available to buy direct from Joe How the book was created, and how, in part of Joe building his brand is NOT just putting the book up everywhere The audit statements in a survey that Joe asks readers of the book to complete The way this survey and other assets help the reader get to "know, like, and trust" Joe and then be willing to purchase from him How traffic to your Amazon page can be one of the worst things you do if that traffic doesn't convert to sales The value of a customer retention system The importance of feeling a special part of a brand's community Focusing on serving your ideal reader rather than trying to sell more books How author Chris Kennedy allows his fans to incorporate their own fan club about the worlds he has created and written The way that people who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on merchandise, cosplay, etc, are not even thinking about how much a book costs Joe telling authors to try out his author marketing audit survey and to pay attention to it and see how they can steal his ideas for their own branding and marketing efforts The free 20 minute calls that Joe offers The critical importance of focusing on your audience, and not on what other authors are doing After the interview Mark reflects on a couple of the things Joe talked about, including the advice on assumptions made about the person "on stage" offering advice, and on the critical value of focusing on how you can serve your ideal reader rather than focusing on trying to sell more books. In this episode, we're exploring the sixth aspect of deep listening which is "wonder." As it relates to listening, this aspect helps us keep our curiosity and awe focused on the wellbeing of the person speaking. With this aspect, we can ask questions that help illuminate the truth for another. Using this aspect of deep listening in conversation is surprisingly powerful; for the speaker and the listener. We'll talk about the power of this aspect and how to practice it amidst some common obstacles. In this episode, we're exploring our element of awe alongside the fifth aspect of deep listening which is “allowing.” When it comes to listening, allowing reminds us that we can't be pressured into speaking our truth. We must be allowed to do so. We can do this for ourselves and for other by creating the space that feels safe, spacious, and unhurried. We'll get into some key obstacles that come with this and some simple steps to practice this aspect of "allowing." In this episode, we're exploring our element of curiosity alongside the fourth aspect of deep listening which is “seeing the goodness in others.” And even though this aspect may sound subtle, the impact is profound. Not only does "seeing the goodness in others" support our own deep listening, but it feeds how we see ourselves, and the way we see the world.
