My guest this week is couples therapist Zach Brittle who is based in Seattle I was able to pick his brain about that very common question we hear from some of our members – How can I quit when my partner drinks? In this episode:- Zach's drinking escalated during COVID lockdown—he felt depressed and family relationships were under strain. He reached that point that many of us get to – his “not this" moment as we call it in Tribe Sober He approached a sober friend, Dave, who became his sponsor and helped him to work the 12 steps He only attended a few in-person AA meetings but actually found a South African online meeting that became his home group – so he has a soft spot for us here in SA He quit alcohol quickly and without too much trouble, but deeper emotional recovery took much longer. Zach stressed the difference between quitting drinking and being sober. His marriage had involved heavy shared drinking and his wife had been his drinking buddy But after he got sober, his wife began to drink more and had her own recovery journey to tackle Their 15-year-old daughter also “spun out” as the family system recalibrated Family members are now all healthy and connected I loved Zach's analogy as a family being like a child mobile – hold one piece steady and the other pieces wobble – how true Zach had some great advice for partners struggling with a drinker who won't change: Take care of yourself first — get grounded and stable. Build your “healthy place” and invite your partner into it. You can't decide their behaviour, but you can decide what works for you. Early sobriety is fragile — ignore comments like “you're boring.” Focus on your own survival. Zach's Top Benefits of Sobriety Feels like an adult for the first time in his life. Sleep transformed — falls asleep naturally, sleeps through, wakes refreshed. Clear mind & emotional stability — no hedging, hiding, or dodging. Better marriage — calmer, more intimate, more predictable. Massive financial savings — used to spend ~$12k/year on bar tabs. Advice for Anyone Struggling Ask yourself: “Am I ready?” If yes, do the work: find community, a sponsor, a meeting, a book, a mentor. The work isn't quitting alcohol — it's understanding yourself and building emotional sobriety. Zach's Podcast & Work Hosts Marriage Therapy Radio — weekly episodes with real couples. Has published books and has a new one coming in 2027 on relational recovery. Works mostly in person in Seattle but does some online work. I get asked often for specific books, curriculum, and plans and I don't often share those publicly. Today is a little exception. My 3 homeschooled children became avid readers and it was a highlight for their days. Over the years, they've each read hundreds of books. And today, I'm sharing a few of their favorites. Managing personal finances can be daunting in today's fast-paced world. However, with the emergence of personal finance apps, individuals now have powerful tools to simplify and enhance their financial management. These apps transform financial habits and empower users to take control of their overall financial health. This tip will delve into the top benefits of using personal finance apps, shedding light on how they can put you in the driver's seat of your financial journey. Links: Explore the benefits of Triangle's mobile app and online banking services with TCUGo Check out the useful benefits of personal finance tools like Goal Builder and Money Management Check out TCU University for financial education tips and resources! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal Podcast. Personal finance apps continue to rise in popularity as people grow more digitally savvy and tech expands in processing and functionality. Using a personal finance app can significantly improve your financial game by helping you overcome challenges, get organized, and stay on track to meet goals. A report from Future Data Stats states that 70% of users improved their financial habits and budgeting skills when they used a personal finance app. The key to achieving financial independence is to build the skills of managing personal finances effectively. The hard part for many is determining where to start. That's where personal finance apps and tools come in. They provide a sophisticated, user-friendly way to conveniently set up and manage finances. If you're not currently using a personal finance app or tool, consider using one. Here are a few top benefits of using a personal finance app. The first benefit is that personal finance apps allow users to manage their finances anytime, anywhere. It's hard to beat the convenience and flexibility of on-the-go financial management. They keep all your information within arm's reach and provide functions and tools like access to real-time financial data and integration with bank accounts and credit cards for seamless tracking. Explore your app store for common, highly rated apps to try out. Also, consider exploring your financial institution's mobile app, which provides many of the same tools at no added cost. The second benefit is that these apps offer robust tools for budgeting and tracking expenses. Although some might still prefer using pen and paper, for most people today, this method is waning. Personal finance apps provide budgeting tools with the latest technology and sometimes even AI capabilities to keep you on track with budgeting and tracking expenses. They provide ways for you to categorize spending to help identify patterns and areas for improvement, they offer alerts and reminders for upcoming bills and due payments, and they can provide you with deeper insights into your spending habits to help you stay within your budget. A third benefit is that personal finance apps can significantly enhance financial security and instill user confidence. Storing your banking information digitally, especially when linked to different platforms, can concern many. However, reputable apps have robust security measures to protect your personal information. These apps use encryption and other security measures to protect your financial data. To sum up, to successfully accomplish financial goals, you need to build effective money management skills, and using a personal finance app is a great way to get started. When it comes to financial management, choosing the right app based on your needs is critical. Explore your app store for different options, read reviews, and look through functionality to determine the best app for you. If you're a Triangle member, consider exploring the various tools within your online and mobile banking account, like Money Manager and Goal Builder, to organize budgets, pay down debt, and set savings goals. Robert Price is a voice teacher, director, and level five advanced clinical massage therapist specialising in the voice and jaw. He trained in voice studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama before teaching and directing in many drama schools and currently serves voice users at his Vocal Massage London and at the Voice Care Centre. Robert teaches vocal massage to other teachers, osteopaths, physiotherapists, and SLTs, and he's here to help us understand how we can perform massage on ourselves and guide our clients in self-massage in the studio. KEY TAKEAWAYS Robert finds massage beneficial for stress and anxiety. He discusses how vocal massage helps shift from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic state, calming the nervous system and fostering connection. Individuals should listen to their bodies and engage in self-massage with care, avoiding extremes and focusing on gentle, thoughtful touch. Robert also recommends seeking professional training for those interested in pursuing vocal massage as a practice. Robert's vocal massage techniques for stress management include gently mobilising the larynx, performing anterior neck stretches, massaging the submental region, encouraging thoughtful self-touch, using a holistic approach with whole-body techniques like Qigong, and ensuring consent-based touch. These methods promote relaxation, improve mobility, and reduce tension in the vocal area. Example Daily Routine. Morning: Start your day with a few minutes of gentle neck stretches and submental massages. Afternoon Break: Take a short break to practise deep breathing and light self-massage on your neck and shoulders. Evening: End your day with a more extended self-massage session, focusing on the entire neck and throat area, and incorporating whole-body stretches. BEST MOMENTS "The fundamental value of massage is to move people from a sympathetic state to a parasympathetic state." "The benefits of vocal massage are subjective. It usually helps people, but quite what's happening within that is about the person." "Consent and safety are at the heart of manual therapy. The person should have agency over the touch and feel comfortable throughout the session." My Top benefits for detoxing your body for better health. Improved Digestion: Certain dietary changes, like increasing fiber intake and staying hydrated, can help your digestive system function more efficiently, potentially leading to reduced bloating, constipation, and improved nutrient absorption. Enhanced Energy Levels: Processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can contribute to sluggishness and fatigue. Choosing nutrient-dense foods, getting enough sleep, and managing stress can contribute to increased energy levels. Clearer Skin: Inflammation and oxidative stress can manifest as skin issues. Eating anti-inflammatory foods, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep can potentially improve skin health. Weight Management: While not a magic bullet for weight loss, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods and mindful eating can help manage calorie intake and promote healthy weight management. Stronger Immune System: A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can provide essential nutrients that support immune function. This doesn't guarantee immunity to illness, but it can contribute to your overall well-being. Improved Mental Clarity: Studies suggest that gut health can impact mood and brain function. Choosing a balanced diet and managing stress can potentially improve mental clarity and focus. Remember: Focusing on sustainable, healthy habits like nutritious eating, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management is the best way to support your body's natural detoxification processes and promote overall well-being. Joining Alexa this week to chat about the Alexander Technique is Patrick Ardagh-Walter, a professional singer who has worked with the likes of the Royal Opera. He's a trained Alexander technique teacher himself and is an assistant at a training school for teachers of the Alexander Technique in Paris. Patrick is here to tell us where the technique originated from, how it can benefit singers, and he also shares with us an exercise that we can try out for ourselves and use in the studio with the singers we work with. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Alexander Technique is a method for improving posture and movement, addressing habits of tension that can interfere with optimal functioning. Developed by F. Matthias Alexander, it emphasises self-awareness and mindful reeducation of the body's alignment and coordination. Practitioners learn to release unnecessary muscular tension, promoting better posture, ease of movement, and overall well-being. This benefits singers by promoting optimal posture, breath control, and vocal coordination. It helps singers release tension, allowing for a free and natural flow of breath, enhancing vocal resonance. By improving overall body awareness, singers can maintain better alignment and support, preventing strain and vocal fatigue. The technique fosters a mindful approach to movement, enabling singers to refine their technique and optimise vocal performance, contributing to long-term vocal health and expressive singing. BEST MOMENTS ‘The technique isn't an activity where you do it and get on with life, it's a re-education' ‘It's difficult to let go of something that feels familiar and do something unfamiliar instead' ‘You can't ask someone's brain to do something if they've never experienced before' ‘Almost everybody I see tends to stand in a way which interferes with the breathing mechanism' EPISODE RESOURCES How You Stand, How You Move, How You Live by Missy Vineyard Feldenkrais Method: https://feldenkrais.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep.63 Developing a Singer's Self Awareness and Clarifying Intention with Robert Sussuma Ep.65 The Top Benefits of Vocal Massage with Lydia Flock Ep.74 Understanding Manual Therapy with Walt Fritz Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT): https://alexandertechnique.co.uk/teacher-training-courses American Society for the Alexander Technique: https://www.amsatonline.org/aws/AMSAT/pt/sp/home_page Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (AUSTAT): https://www.austat.org.au/ The Use of the Self by F. Now living in France, he continues to perform alongside his teaching, and is assistant at a Training School for teachers of the Alexander Technique in Paris. Patrick uses his understanding of voice and breathing integrated with the Alexander Technique in private lessons and workshops, in France and the UK, and also to support people approaching the end of life. Alexa is in the company of composer, musical director, pianist, arranger and app creator Rowland Braché. Originally from Melbourne, Rowland has worked as an MD for productions such as West Side Story, The Last Five Years, Into the Woods and A Chorus Line. He joined Book Music and Lyrics in London in 2015 and was a finalist for the Stars and Drew Best New Song Prize in 2017. Rowland created the UK's premier female vocal rock group called Rock Goddess and is the creator of the Warble app, which was ranked in the top 50 educational apps. KEY TAKEAWAYS Warble is an app designed for singers, particularly those in the performing arts industry, who struggle to find suitable repertoire. Singers put their vocal range into the app, and it generates a curated list of songs within their range, addressing the common question of which songs to sing that best suit their voice. The motivation behind creating Warble stems from Rowland's experiences while working at a dance college. Many talented singers attended the college, but as the focus was primarily on dance, their vocal abilities went unexplored. This inspired the idea for an app that empowers singers by helping them discover songs that showcase their voice and provides a platform for exploration. When using the app, you specify your voice type, for example, soprano, alto, baritone or tenor, and then the app gives you songs that correspond to that voice type. Then you can filter through different categories such as decade, artist, composer, musical style and genre. If you're searching for a song for a specific audition, say a 1950s ballad, you can find that through the app quite easily by using the filters. Alternatively, you can utilise the voice range feature by inputting your personal vocal range. For example, if your range spans from G3 to E5, by entering these notes, the app will display all the songs available within that range. Free and premium versions of the app are available on Android and IOS. You can find it by searching Warble in the app store and Google play store. BEST MOMENTS ‘One of my friends even uses it to find songs for karaoke' ‘I found so many songs that made me think "why haven't I heard this before?"' ‘I want to make Warble a one-stop shop for everything you need' EPISODE RESOURCES Social Media: @warble_app Instagram: @rowlyb Relevant Links & Mentions: Shows/songs referenced: Kimberly Akimbo; Into the Woods; Six; Defying Gravity (from Wicked) Book, Music & Lyrics: https://www.bookmusicandlyrics.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 55 Teaching Singing for Mental Health and Wellbeing with Cat Ogden Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep 65. He joined the BML workshop as a composer in 2015 where he relished being surrounded by passionate and talented songwriters. Prior to London, Rowland worked as an MD and pianist on the musical theatre and cabaret scene in Melbourne. Australian credits include West Side Story (The Production Company), Cats, The Last Five Years, Merrily We Roll Along, Into The Woods and A Chorus Line. Rowland's first musical Once We Were… was staged in 2012 at The Lithuanian Theatre, Melbourne, and a concert version of his second show Illusions was staged later that year at The GH, Melbourne. Rowland was also a finalist for the Stiles and Drewe Best New Song prize in 2017. Recent UK credits include; MD/Arranger: Footloose UK Tour (Sell A Door)- Repetiteur & click tracks, The Dressers (2020, Dublin), Peter Pan (QDOS Pantomimes), Ordinary Days (Streetlights), Sleeping Beauty (QDOS), Jack & the Beanstalk (QDOS), Beauty and The Beast (Imagine Theatre). Rowland is the creator of the innovative app for singers, Warble. On its first day, Warble was ranked in the top 50 of educational apps on the App Store. In 2021, Rowland created the UK's premier female vocal rock group, Rock Goddess, which has been performing on cruise ships and at various festivals, holiday parks, nightclubs, and events up and down the UK. BAST founder Line Hilton joins Alexa for another instalment in the ongoing series ‘The Best Vocal Exercises for'. This week they'll be discussing chest voice. Find out what a vocal range is, how many we have, why this is a debated topic, how to identify and access chest voice and how singing teachers can create the best vocal exercises for using chest voice. KEY TAKEAWAYS In terms of singers, chest voice refers to the lower and more powerful range of their vocals. It produces a rich, full-bodied sound felt in the chest and is used for lower and mid-range notes. Chest voice is just one component of a singer's overall vocal range. Chest voice is associated with power, projection, and emotional expression. Singers develop and strengthen their chest voice through exercises and technique to improve control, range, and tonal quality. Professional training helps coordinate chest voice with other registers. When we're in a chest voice our TA is engaged. This means that we have more mass coming together on the vertical vocal folds from the bottom to the top or just the top with no TA engagement. This leads to a bigger or louder tone. A glottal cycle refers to the complete opening and closing sequence of the vocal folds during a single vibration cycle. It is the basis of sound production in the larynx. The vocal folds close to block airflow (closed phase) and then open to allow airflow and create vibrations (open phase). Skilled control of the glottal cycle enables singers to produce different pitches and vocal effects. The first thing Line does when teaching chest voice is to establish if her student has control and stability over the larynx and the vocal folds. BEST MOMENTS‘A register is just an area of your range' ‘Anything from G4 down for females is chest, and for males anything from D4 down is chest'‘I've heard people belting up to F5 but if they go beyond that it might all fall apart' ‘It might be harder for a shy person who doesn't have a loud voice to find this register' ‘Those who are extroverts tend to over engage their TA and get vocal fold issues' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.basttraining.com Social Media: @basttraining Relevant Links & Mentions: Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 62 How to Choose the Best Vocal Exercises with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 73 The Best Vocal Exercises for Laryngeal Stability with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 83 The Best Vocal Exercises for Sick Voices with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 44 Exploring Vocal Registers with Chris Johnson The work of Dr Ingo Titze BAST Blog - Case Study: Working with Shy Singers: https://www.basttraining.com/case-study-working-with-shy-singers/ BAST Blog - Case Study: The One with the Yelly Child: https://www.basttraining.com/case-study-the-one-with-the-yelly-child/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 59 Top Tongue Tips for Boosting High Frequency Energy with Kerrie Obert Repertoire mentioned: Adele; Jessie J; Elton John; Billy Joel; Ed Sheeran; Ella Fitzgerald; Dianne Reeves; Cassandra Wilson; Mark Murphy; Kurt Elling Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 110 Articulation and Singing: Assessing Jaw Behaviour with Chris Johnson Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 65 The Top Benefits of Vocal Massage with Lydia Flock Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 74 Understanding Manual Therapy with Walt Fritz BAST Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@basttraining ABOUT THE PODCASTBAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher.
