After being diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer, Dr. JC Doornick found himself overwhelmed by fear, uncertainty, and an endless stream of advice from well-meaning people. But instead of asking only how to fight the cancer, he began asking a different question: What allowed it to grow in the first place? In this deeply personal episode, Dr. JC shares the story of his diagnosis for the first time and introduces a powerful mindset shift inspired by his Interface Response System (IRS): before you plant new seeds, you must first pull the weeds. Learn why healing isn't just about treatments, supplements, or new habits—it's about transforming the terrain of your mind, body, and life so that health can thrive. TV CONFIDENTIAL: A radio talk show about television

TVC 739.4: Ed welcomes Barry Weitz, co-creator and co-executive producer of Movin' On (NBC, 1974-1976), the classic TV series starring Claude Akins and Frank Converse as independent truck drivers that, in many ways, was a modern-day Western, and Kathy Bird, author of Sundance Turns Fifty: The Amazing Legacy of Movin' On, a fun new book that not only takes you behind the scenes of the production of Movin' On, but introduces you to many of the people who are responsible for keeping the show alive today. Sundance Turns Fifty is available in paperback and as an eBook through Amazon.com. Proceeds from sales of the book will help support the efforts of the Duke Cancer Research Institute in Durham, North Carolina. Topics this segment include how Barry came up with the concept for Movin' On; how the show's move to an 8pm time slot in the second season not only introduced the series to younger viewers, but paved the way for the resurgence of interest in Movin' On that continues to this day; how Barry came to cast Frank Converse and Claude Akins; and how Movin' On inspired many viewers to become truck drivers themselves.

A small white shack near the entrance to Interstate 94 has puzzled Minneapolis commuters for years. It's boarded up, rarely noticed, and easy to dismiss as an abandoned shed. But behind it lies a heartwarming city story. After a Curious Minnesota listener asked about the structure, reporter Alicia Eller discovered it was once a thriving newsstand run by Arne Paulson, a legally blind newspaper vendor whose determination inspired an entire community. Café owners, waitresses, and neighborhood regulars raised money and built the stand for him in 1963, helping him launch a business that served Minneapolis for more than a decade and a half. Host Erica Pearson and reporter Alicia Eler explore Arne's life, his impact on the neighborhood, and why this modest little building remains standing today as a quiet reminder of a different era.

Hello to you listening in Pristina, Kosovo! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The things we take for granted, like a song we've heard over and over. I wondered: what's the story behind “I Won't Back Down” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?  "I Won't Back Down" was born from sheer defiance after a targeted act of arson in May 1987 burned Tom Petty's Los Angeles home to the ground. Petty refused to move away. Instead, he rebuilt on the same plot of land and channeled his trauma into a song of defiance. The message of resilience in the face of adversity became a universal mantra for overcoming any struggle.     Maybe like me you've acted against your own better wisdom, saying 'yes' instead of 'no', going along to get along, or something else. You know what I'm talking about. Maybe like me you finally figured out a better way to live. We've got just one life. In a world that keeps pushing us around we stand our ground, we won't back down! Story Prompt: When have you backed down because someone or something was pushing you around? No more.  You know how to stand your ground! Write that story and share it out loud!   You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! MASTERCLASS w/ James D'Amato and Dillin Apelyan - Trauma, Drama, and World Domination: Crafting the Ultimate RPG Villain Backstory

The RPGBOT.Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2026 74:02

Every villain thinks they're the hero of their own story. This episode proves that sometimes they're right, and that's what makes them dangerous. Joined by James D'Amato and Dillin Apelyan, we set out to discuss villain backstories and somehow end up creating a supernatural cat-themed criminal mastermind based on Tyler's cat Cora. The result is equal parts masterclass, therapy session, and cautionary tale about what happens when a cat gains both motivation and opposable thumbs. Show Notes This week we welcome James D'Amato and Dillin Apelyan from the One Shot Podcast Network to discuss the art of creating memorable tabletop RPG villains. Drawing from their new book, The Ultimate RPG Villain Backstory Guide, we explore how Game Masters can move beyond simple evil-for-the-sake-of-evil antagonists and build villains with goals, beliefs, flaws, and histories that make them feel alive. The conversation examines why great villains are often reflections of the heroes themselves. We discuss how similar experiences can lead one character toward heroism and another toward villainy, and why understanding a villain's motivations often makes them more frightening rather than more sympathetic. A villain does not need redemption to be compelling. Sometimes knowing exactly why they became terrible only makes their choices more horrifying. To demonstrate the process, the group builds a villain from scratch using exercises from the book. Starting with the simple premise of Tyler's attention-seeking cat, we gradually construct a complex antagonist with needs, ideology, grudges, and a worldview that justifies increasingly terrible behavior. The exercise highlights how quickly a few well-designed prompts can transform a joke character into someone players would genuinely remember. We also discuss villain archetypes, the value of supporting indie RPG creators, experiences within the broader tabletop community, and how character motivations can create richer stories at the table. By the end of the episode, listeners will have practical tools for creating antagonists who challenge players emotionally as well as mechanically. MASTERCLASS w/ James D'Amato and Dillin Apelyan - Trauma, Drama, and World Domination: Crafting the Ultimate RPG Villain Backstory

Key Takeaways Great villains are people first and villains second. The most memorable antagonists have understandable desires, fears, and motivations. Even when their actions are unforgivable, players should be able to understand how they arrived at those decisions. A villain does not need to be sympathetic to be interesting. The royals can seem like a bunch of people with too much money but with good intentions for their nation and their people. The scandals involving Charles and Diana . . and Harry and Megan are great tabloid fodder. But the 1936 abdication of King Edward VIII had a much darker backstory. It turns out he had a deeply close relationship with Adolf Hitler and the Nazis during World War II, and the royals had to do everything in their power to bury it. Most content teaches tactics, but this episode breaks down why storytelling is the real driver of conversions in the AI era. The conversation dives into how shifting beliefs, not just sharing information, creates pre-sold clients who are ready to buy. Through personal experiences, client transformations, and strategic messaging frameworks, the episode reveals the four core stories every creator, coach, or business owner should use to attract ideal clients, eliminate objections, and make marketing resonate on a deeper emotional level.    "When you could start to get them to think differently, when you can literally shift their beliefs, you will get them to take more action"   Standout Points: Teaching doesn't convert, belief shifting does Audiences take action when their thinking changes, not when they're overloaded with information. Strong storytelling creates pre-sold clients Personal stories, struggles, and client wins build trust faster than tactics alone.
