3x USA Memory Champion John Graham shares his journey of mastering memory techniques like visualization and memory palaces, and how he overcame anxiety and panic attacks. He discusses effective learning strategies such as active recall and spaced repetition, debunks the myth of fixed learning styles, and reveals his counterintuitive methods for processing suppressed emotions and regulating the nervous system. Learn how John helps high performers release anxiety for good and achieve personal growth by balancing ambition, passion, and letting go. Takeaways Memory techniques such as visualization and memory palaces can help in memorizing large amounts of information. Active recall and spaced repetition are effective learning strategies. Learning styles are not fixed, and it is important to trust one's memory and not limit oneself to a specific style. Anxiety and panic attacks can be overcome by facing and fully experiencing the emotions rather than avoiding or distracting oneself. Optimizing the nervous system and unhooking from anxious thoughts are crucial in managing anxiety. Catalyst merging can help release suppressed emotions without the need for extensive digging or therapy. Regulating the nervous system is the first step in managing emotions and finding relief from daily overwhelm and anxiety. Emotions are often triggered by past experiences, and present-day catalysts can help access and release suppressed emotions. Surrendering and letting go of control is more effective than trying to force change through techniques like meditation or mindfulness. Finding and aligning with one's passion can lead to abundance and fulfillment in life. When discussing the concept of affliction, which refers to something that causes pain or suffering. I invite you to consider these two questions: Do you often feel anxious and feel the need to constantly stay productive? Do you feel like your life is always in motion? If your emotional reactions heavily influence your decision-making, you are not alone. According to the Cleveland Clinic, up to 11% of people in the United States experience a panic attack every year, and approximately 2% to 3% have panic disorder.   John Graham is a 3-time USA Memory Champion, Grandmaster of Memory, Entrepreneur, and mentor to high performers. Despite his success, he had to overcome daily panic attacks and chronic anxiety. Conventional methods such as therapy, meditation, and supplements didn't work for him, so he discovered counter-intuitive methods to release suppressed emotions and free himself from panic and anxiety. He has showcased incredible mental feats on TV shows around the world and has been an entrepreneur since 2012, experiencing failure with at least 5 businesses along the way. He is a proud father and husband to three girls and emphasizes that he does not have a naturally gifted mind. He read a book called "Moonwalking with Einstein" in 2014, which sparked his journey of learning mental techniques and competing globally. I know panic attacks and anxiety.  Strangely I had often when I was bulimic.  I would hyperventilate when I was driving and have to pull over somewhere.  So John Graham was a welcoming guest on my Podcast.  What causes this?I asked some questions.  Is it passed down from generation to generation?  Is it about nutrition? In the view of John, there is little awareness of where it comes from, but he knows.  Most therapists, psychiatrists, and others will tell you it's a mindset, it can be cured with pills, meditation, or so on.  It can't.  I agree.  I tried all..  I love his response to this.  YOU HAVE TO START WITH THE HEART.  It was interesting that the Podcast guest that followed him had the same message.  Yet in a different version.  I found it interesting that John spoke about working with the right side of your brain instead of the left one that likes to "Google" the answer.  He explained both men and women have a hard time working with the "feminine" side of the brain because we have been brought up in such a masculine society and to think masculine.Emotional root issues store themselves in the heart.  One of my favourite moments was when John said the emotions rise when someone pokes you.  And you can feel the anxiety or panic surface, but instead of feeling it you push it back down.  And that someone doesn't know they poked you, but you know that there is something there that has to be addressed, but you choose not to. This is where John comes in.  I love that he said he feels like he is at the top of the mountain and wants to shout out to everyone how to overcome this panic attack and anxiety rollercoaster.  I told him I want to be at the top of the mountain with him.Listen to this and you will learn how to release all those uncomfortable feelings you keep inside of you.To reach John, please go to get your free video on How to Release Your Anxiety, Forever. https://releasepanic.com/freeMore about John:John Graham is a 3x USA Memory Champion, Grandmaster of Memory, Entrepreneur, and mentors High Performers (including a World Record holder). He's a world-class mind and innovator...but his dark secret is that he had to overcome daily panic attacks and chronic anxiety.  Mainstream methods (therapy, meditation, supplements, etc.) did not work so he discovered counter-intuitive methods to release suppressed emotions and release the control conditioning of his mind to free himself of panic and anxiety, for goodHe's performed insane mental feats on TV shows all over the world:- Super Brain (China) 400 Million Viewers- SuperHuman (USA) with Mike Tyson- Xtra Ordinary (Indonesia) 20 Million Viewers- Incredible People (Russia) 4th place finishHe's been an entrepreneur since 2012 and failed with at least 5 businesses along the way. Today's guest can remember your name, your number, and, oh, about 10,000 digits of pi while he's at it! Nelson Dellis is a 5-time USA Memory Champion, and when he says he's an athlete, he means it. In addition to his incredible feats of memory, Dellis is a former elite Crossfit games athlete and a mountaineer, having climbed Everest three times.   Nelson Dellis describes his unique method for memorizing large amounts of information very quickly, associating words and numbers with notable characteristics and emotions, then placing them in one of his "memory palaces" where they can be organized and quickly recalled. While you may not need to memorize the number and suit of 7 decks of randomly shuffled cards, Dellis' techniques have many real-world applications, like learning the names of employees at a job interview, memorizing lines in a script, or understanding how to make characters in a story more memorable to readers.   Nelson Dellis has published two books about his memory techniques, and coaches others privately and through his YouTube channel.   Website: https://www.nelsondellis.com YouTube: youtu.be/Bhl1-vgQ1Nk IG: @nelzor   Remember It! by Nelson Dellis Memory Superpowers!: An Adventurous Guide to Remembering What You Don't Want to Forget by Nelson Dellis

Nelson Dellis is a 4x USA Memory Champion and one of the leading memory experts in the world. As a Memory Champion and mountaineer, he promotes a lifestyle that combines both mental and physical fitness. Inspired by the passing of his grandmother from Alzheimer's, he started training his memory so that he could keep his mind active and healthy. Nelson was born with an average memory, yet he transformed himself into one of the leading competitive memorizers in the world and earned the elite title of Grandmaster of Memory.   Does memory qualify as a sport? Nelson has tried many things but never pushed on. With memory, he went chips in, total devotion. Why? Why does memory almost carry a negative vibe Where does the psychology of memory start? Many of us say "oh, I have a terrible memory." How should we think about memory in our minds? 7 4 3 9 0 3 8 9 2 4 7 1 5 6 0 3 5 2 7 8 3 6 3 4 6 8 9 2 5 7: What could Nelson see to remember the list of numbers above, forward and backwards? Who is 419? Where does fear and trust fall into the equation of memory? In 2018 Nelson lost. How does he forget a default doubt he doesn't want to remember? Is Nelson a visual learner? Does he see it in his mind to recall it? There are five people in a room. Nelson doesn't know them. What's his process to recall all five people by name? Framing a change to our attention by walking into a room and saying "I need to know this person's name." Nelson likes to feel the book when he reads, does he need to feel the cards when he is competing? When he read The Hobbit, he can remember where he was and hat he read vividly - why? Does Nelson have rituals for reading or learning something to remember and recall learnings? How does Nelson use journals and pens? Nelson got within 50 meters of the summit of Mt Everest. What's his inner dialogue when he had to turn back? When Nelson won his first major memory competition, what did he say in a quiet moment to his grandmother? The importance of silence in Nelson's world; are climbing and memory solo, silent endeavours?   LINKS Nelson Dellis Website https://www.nelsondellis.com   Top 10 Cowbell Songs of All Time https://ultimateclassicrock.com/cowbell-songs/   Athletic Greens https://athleticgreens.com/us     The Mojo Radio Show Rocktober https://www.themojoradioshow.com/rocktober-2019.html   The Mojo Radio Show http://www.themojoradioshow.com   The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/   The Mojo Radio Show on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/themojoradioshowpodcast   The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements. The effects that technology has had on our memory as it has started to replace our need to recall information. In fact, he came back to talk to us about the 2 books that he has published since, as well as about numerous climbs up some of the world's largest mountains. Nelson also runs a thriving charity called "Climb For Memory", and travels all around the world teaching these incredible memory techniques. We had a very far and wide-ranging conversation, where we talk about everything from dealing with failure, to the difference between being a subject matter expert and teaching. Of course, as you can expect, we go all the way to some memory hacks that you can implement in your own life. It's a great episode, and I always enjoy talking to Nelson. That is why he has become a SuperFriend in the years since he originally came on the show! So, I just know that you are going to enjoy this episode with Nelson Dellis! -Jonathan Levi

Looking for visual memory techniques? And I mean truly visual. In this episode of the Magnetic Memory Method Podcast, Nelson Dellis takes us behind the scenes of his new book, Remember It! No kidding: It is the most visual memory improvement book I have ever seen. Even better, Nelson shares his unique way of using the Memory Palace technique to get the best results for both competition and learning. All on an incredibly visual basis unlike anything we've seen since Bruno's On the Shadows of the Ideas (and then some). I really appreciate the visual memory techniques in Nelson's new book for the way it will help so many people who get lost in the technical details involved in memory techniques. No one is to blame for that. It does have it's "cerebral" aspects and we've needed people who can teach that. But never before has someone both exposed the need for visual training we all need and taken so much care and attention into making mnemonic examples truly visual. Seriously, Remember It! is almost like a visual mnemonics dictionary. But you might be asking yourself... Who is This Nelson Dellis Anyway? Some Kind Of Memory Champion?     As a matter of fact, yes. And he's got some of the best memory improvement tips in town. Here's a quick summary of some of the best: You see? Nelson's even inspired me to up my game and get more visual too. Nelson Dellis is memory athlete, mnemonist (able to remember and recall unusually long lists of data such as unfamiliar names, list of numbers, and others), public speaker, and consultant. He is a four-time USA Memory Champion and the co-founder of Memory League, a new type of competitive memory platform that allows memory enthusiasts to challenge each other online. He is also the founder of Climb for Memory through which he preaches a lifestyle that combines both mental and physical fitness with proper diet and social involvement. HELP OUT in the endeavour to find a cure for Alzheimer's by taking The Extreme Memory Challenge, a short, easy memory test online. It's poised to be one of the largest long-term memory studies ever conducted. Just go to www.extremememorychallenge.com Becoming a memory enthusiast His grandmother died of Alzheimer's in 2009 and that made Nelson develop an interest in memory. He saw how her mind slipped away and didn't want the same thing to happen to him. From his research on memory, he discovered the US Memory Championship which to his surprise included average people who had just learnt some memory techniques and practised. That's when he realised that memory was a skill like any other and from there he started off on his journey towards becoming a memory champion. Climb for Memory: Research on Alzheimer's He says the current research is not clear on whether or not keeping the brain active deters Alzheimer's. Some researchers say it doesn't while others say it does. Nelson is a believer that keeping the brain active makes a big difference, judging from his own experience with his memory transformation. Core revenue streams He says it's hard to define his business because his revenue sources have not always been clear. He is not much of a business guy. He started doing memory as a business when he found that he had won a few memory championships, had gotten a lot of media attention and was receiving a lot of requests for speaking engagements and different appearances. He used to work in coding and physics as a career but he decided to leave it behind. The majority of his revenues come from speaking engagements, doing different memory-related events, spokesperson deals, and other memory-related projects. Leaving the normal job He loved his formal job in the corporate world but when he started doing the memory-related projects, he had a hard time managing both. When he got an offer to do a memory event sponsored by a certain company, the head of marketing of that company approached him after the event, and asked him to work with them on a long-term basis. For Nelson to take their offer and focus entirely on memory-related work under their endorsement, they agreed to pay him the same amount he was getting as a salary at his job. Getting to the point of winning competitions He had to put in a lot of hard work to become a memory champion and it was easy because he was very passionate about it. He loved the whole process of memorization. He wanted to be the best, so he spent as much time as possible training his memory. He started getting serious about it in the summer of 2009 when his grandmother passed away. He entered into the first competition in March 2010 and came in 3rd place which was commendable considering it was his first time. That inspired him to train more seriously, and in 2011, he won the competition. He used to train every day after work for at least 2 hours. He says he also used to memorize numbers and cards while at work. Two ways to catapult memory retention skills He says one way is to pay attention which includes focusing on one thing at time and not multitasking. Since the brain is not good at memorizing abstract things like numbers, names or directions, the second way is to turn those things by association into pictures (visual imagery in the mind). Tip 1: Paying attention will help a lot with your memory Tip 2: Always try to think in pictures
