Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families
#1244 - Mental Health and Externalising Disorders With Dr Jaimie Northam

Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families

ADHD is now the most diagnosed condition among Australian children under 14, and anxiety tops the list for teens. In this important episode, Dr Justin Coulson speaks with clinical psychologist Dr Jaimie Northam about the rise in childhood mental health challenges, the role of early intervention, and how parents can meaningfully support their kids. From understanding the signs to cutting through the online overwhelm, this conversation provides practical tools, gentle encouragement, and hope for families navigating tough seasons. KEY POINTS: ADHD and anxiety are rising dramatically among Australian children and teens. Family stress and digital distractions impact parent-child connection more than screen time itself. The three D’s to watch for: Distress, Dysfunction, and Deviation from typical development. A simple 10-minute connection with your child can dramatically improve behaviour and emotional resilience. Early mental health challenges often persist if left unaddressed — but early intervention can prevent long-term impact. Overexposure to conflicting parenting advice online can add to parental stress and confusion. Evidence-based strategies should fit both the child and the family — even among credible experts, one size does not fit all. The Growing Minds Check-In is a free, research-backed tool to assess your child’s wellbeing and get tailored support. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“Half of all child mental health problems emerge before age twelve — and many become lifelong if we don’t act early.” — Dr Jaimie Northam RESOURCES MENTIONED: Growing Minds Check-In Study — growingmindscheckin.au Dr Jaimie Northam (University of Sydney) – Clinical psychologist and researcher happyfamilies.com.au – Parenting resources and support ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Use the Growing Minds Check-In: In just six minutes, assess your child’s wellbeing and receive customised recommendations. Schedule 10 minutes of ‘special time’ daily to connect with your child on their terms — no agenda, just play. Watch for the 3 D’s: Distress, Dysfunction, and Deviation — and seek early support if you notice any. Filter online advice carefully: Prioritise approaches that are research-backed, clearly explained, and suited to your child’s needs. Model self-regulation: If you’re too tired to engage well, set a respectful boundary — and follow through with connection later. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Diabetes involves high blood sugar levels caused by insulin resistance. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps cells absorb glucose for energy. Overexposure to insulin makes cells resistant, preventing glucose from entering and causing high blood sugar. Carbohydrates like flour, sugars, and bread increase blood sugar. To address diabetes, insulin resistance must be tackled. Exercise is a key tool for this, as muscle contractions enable glucose absorption without insulin, lowering blood sugar and reducing insulin production. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for overall health. Start with simple exercises like walking, sit-to-stand, and wall push-ups, gradually increasing to 210 minutes per week.

The hypothesis suggested that UV light could affect opioid receptors in human brains. -       Alastair took a proactive approach to test his hypothesis by exposing himself aggressively to UV light. Living in New York City, he deliberately spent two hours in the sun every day during the summer, in addition to using a tanning bed vigorously. The goal was to maximize exposure to UV light. -       Alastair was strategic about the timing of UV exposure, going out between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., which is considered the highest UV index. He aimed to expose himself during the peak hours of UV intensity to enhance the effectiveness of the experiment. [08:30] Narcan's Swift Action and Alastair's UV Light Experiment -       Narcan rapidly detaches substances that bind to opioid receptors in the brain. It acts quickly, causing not only a reversal of the respiratory effects but also inducing withdrawal symptoms if the person is not breathing. This mechanism serves as the basis for Alastair's experiment. -       Alastair hypothesized that if there is a correlation between UV light and the opioid effect in the brain, Narcan, known to work on normal opioid usage, should have a similar effect in the presence of UV light. This led him to experiment by exposing himself to UV light and then taking Narcan, resulting in a full withdrawal experience. -       According to him, the consistent results indicated that UV light does indeed affect opioid receptors in the brain. -       Alastair's experience lends support to the notion that UV light has a significant and consistent impact on opioid receptors in the brain. [12:30] An Exploration of Light, Mood, and the Subtle Opioid Influence of UV Rays -       Alastair decided to dig deeper into the connection between light exposure, particularly visible light, and mood disorders like SAD. -       He discovered that, separate from the positive effects of visible light seen in SAD treatment, there's another aspect involving UV light, which is not visible to the human eye. -       UV light, distinct from visible light, has effects on the body, including replenishing vitamin D levels and influencing opioid receptors. -       Alastair explained that UV light, over time, subtly affects human opioid receptors, similar to substances like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, and Vicodin. -       While the response is not as strong, prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to feelings of tiredness or reinvigoration, akin to experiencing a mild opioid stimulation. This sheds light on why people may enjoy spending a day at the beach or using tanning beds to achieve a subtle opioid effect. [19:20] Addressing Opioid Addiction and Tanning Bed Dualities -       Alastair suggests that one approach to address opioid addiction is to ensure individuals receive enough sunlight and vitamin D throughout their lives. By maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D, the brain may be less likely to respond to prescription painkillers in an addictive manner, potentially preventing addiction from the outset. -       Researchers are exploring an alternative approach for individuals already abusing or dependent on opioids. Instead of traditional methods like methadone clinics, where individuals are gradually tapered off opioids, there is evidence suggesting that ultraviolet (UV) light could serve as a substitute. -       Alastair discusses the dual nature of tanning beds. While he initially doubted the concept of tanning bed addiction, he acknowledges that there is compelling evidence from esteemed researchers suggesting that tanning beds, with their potent UVA light, can be as addictive as synthetic opioids like Vicodin or Oxycodone. -       However, he also highlights the potential use of tanning beds as a tool to help individuals transition off synthetic opioids. [23:45] Sunblock Controversies: Balancing Skin Cancer Prevention and Vitamin D Synthesis -       The use of sunblock is a controversial subject, particularly in discussions involving dermatologists who often focus on skin cancer prevention. -       Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially from the sun, is known to cause skin cancer. While some doctors recommend avoiding UV light and using vitamin D supplements, Alastair suggests a more relaxed approach, emphasizing the benefits of an active lifestyle and time spent outdoors. -       Some doctors advocate for sunblock as a means to prevent skin cancer, while others, like Alastair, express concerns about its potential negative impact on vitamin D synthesis. -       Alastair expresses skepticism about the marketing behind sunblocks, suggesting that it may not always be honest. [48:00] A Journey through Mood Changes and Tanning Bed Seeking Behavior -       As the seasons changed, Alastair noticed a shift in his mood and described feeling a compulsion in the back of his mind. This compulsion led to what he referred to as "tanning bed seeking behavior." -       He experienced a sense of low-level gloom and a compulsion to seek out tanning, akin to textbook drug-seeking behavior. -       Alastair was mindful of the behavioral changes he observed in himself, characterized by a compulsion to seek out tanning beds. -       He noted that the compulsion to seek out tanning eventually went away. While he initially felt the urge to address the low mood through tanning, with time, the compulsion subsided. AND MUCH MORE! DelaneMD Weight Loss for Healthcare Providers

This episode breaks down the basics of reversing type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance arises when cells no longer respond to insulin normally. Overexposure to insulin is caused by refined carbs. Disrupted insulin signaling occurs with industrial oils like seed, corn, and canola oils. Processed foods, combining these elements, conflict with our biology. Essential actions that fix type 2 diabetes include reading labels for carb counts, and fat sourcing. Limiting daily carb intake, avoiding harmful fats for 10-14 days, and utilizing a glucometer to monitor your sugars. Key to your health is prioritizing consistent commitment in order to positively impact blood sugar. Controlling cravings and reassessing perceived healthy foods are vital for enhancing A1c levels, promoting overall vitality, and longevity in women. This episode explains all these strategies.

Helping your child sleep better. The number of children being prescribed the previous jet lag hormone melatonin to help their child sleep has nearly tripled in the past seven years. Melatonin is indeed not a sleep hormone but a biological marker of darkness.” For example, in humans and other diurnal animals, the release of melatonin into the bloodstream helps prepare the body for sleep.  A recent study from the Netherlands suggested that teenagers' sleep problems can improve after just one week by limiting evening exposure to light-emitting screens on mobile phones, tablets and computers.  Overexposure before bedtime to blue light emitted from devices can affect the brain's clock and the production of the melatonin hormone, resulting in disrupted sleep time and quality.  So is sleep medication being overused by children? Speaking to Colin Espie, a professor of sleep medicine in the Nuffield department of clinical neuroscience at the University of Oxford, is one of many leading experts worried by this trend. “We seem to be socialising our youngsters into the idea that sleep is difficult, and you need tablets for it,” he says. Instead, he explains, our focus should be on helping them to establish healthy sleep patterns at home. As stark new NHS figures show, children are experiencing an epidemic of sleeping problems amid a sharp decline in their mental health triggered by the pandemic. Insomnia can exacerbate an underlying mental or physical health problem.  Emma Thomas, YoungMinds' chief executive, said: there is alarming pressure young people face with their mental health, with many experiencing isolation, loneliness, and reduced support caused partly by the pandemic. Here are some valuable tips.  Prepare children's minds for sleep (even your three-year-old can meditate) If we want children to sleep naturally, teaching simple, mindful noticing skills can be helpful, says Dr Guy Meadows, co-founder and clinical lead at the London clinic Sleep School. At Sleep School, children as young as three are taught to meditate. “You don't tell them they're meditating and put their favourite teddy on their tummy, lie on the floor with them, and they just watch the teddy go up and down.” It calms the mind, preparing it for rest. You might also ask: “What are you grateful for today?” The important thing is that “we're shifting the mind into a state more conducive to sleep”. Don't tell your nine-year-old to ‘go to sleep now! We see an increase in sleep anxiety in children from the age of six, Meadows says — “an explosion of the mind's ability to create worry”. Meanwhile, almost all parents tell their children, “It's time to sleep!” or “Get to sleep now!” If a child is struggling, that can pressure them. Instead, say: “Let's just see if you can rest.” Every child can rest. Rather than insist they sleep when you know they're not ready, Espie asks: “How can my child have some quiet wakefulness?” It's essential to be a good role model, Meadows says. “You can't expect your children to be off their devices if you're sitting in bed watching Netflix, scrolling through your phone.” Let your anxious seven-year-old sleep in your bed. When primary-age children are anxious and sleepless, they often seek comfort in their parents' beds. And many parents let them — for months. They often feel as if this is some failure. It's the opposite, Espie says. No parent should feel guilty about this. Treating your child's sleep issue as a shared responsibility takes effort and is the right thing to do. You're guiding them towards better sleep habits. “This is about habit training,” he says. In this situation, your child's initial habit is struggling to settle and be awake alone in bed at night. They are stressed and need reassurance.” Letting him sleep with you solves that problem and breaks that habit.

Omega-3 and cancer recovery: How supplementation helps reduce hospital stays after operations Capital Medical University (China) Omega-3 supplementation boosts immunity and helps reduce inflammation among gastrointestinal cancer patients after surgery, new meta-analysis reports. Recent studies have indicated that nutritional intervention can reduce these problems, with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) particularly promising because of their inflammation benefits. Results showed that patients on an n-3 PUFAs regime had lower levels of inflammation markers. The academics, from China's Capital Medical University, stated: “The results of our study showed that n-3 PUFAs significantly decreased the level of inflammation and increased immune function. “Thus modulation of immune responses and reduction of inflammatory responses together lessens postoperative hospital stay for GI cancer patients.”     Vitamin D levels higher in exercisers   Johns Hopkins University The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism published the finding of researchers at Johns Hopkins University of a correlation between increased physical activity and higher levels of vitamin D. Higher levels of vitamin D and exercise was also associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The study included 10,342 men and women who were free of coronary heart disease and heart failure upon enrollment in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study between 1987 to 1989. Physical activity levels were assessed during follow-up visits that took place over a 19.3-year period. Stored serum samples obtained at the second visit were analyzed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. Following adjustment for lifestyle and other factors, those who met the recommended levels had a 31% lower risk of being deficient in vitamin D than those with poor activity levels. Subjects in the recommended activity group with levels of vitamin D of 30 ng/mL or more had a 24% lower risk of cardiovascular disease.   Gingko biloba helps protect against the toxic cognitive effects of aluminium chloride Atomic Energy Authority (Egypt) Ginkgo biloba extract helped protect the brain from the toxic effects of aluminium chloride, exposure to which has been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer's. Researchers found its antioxidant properties were key in protecting the brain neurons of rats from oxidative stress caused by aluminium chloride (AlClʒ) intake. “The toxic effect of AlClʒ caused significant histologic changes in brain and testis tissues which is in agreement with other data that found accumulation of Al metal in neurons which cause ultra-structural changes,” wrote researchers from the Atomic Energy Authority in Egypt wrote in Nutrition Journal. “Administration of Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) with aluminium chloride improved some biochemical and histologic changes observed in the brain and testis of male rats.” Overexposure to aluminium, a potent neurotoxin, could be a possible factor in several neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, say researchers. GbE on the other hand, has antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. It has been used to help treating cerebral disorders that result from ageing and hypoxia. Previous studies also highlighted its ability to regulate neurotransmitters and exert neuprotective effects.   New data shows avocado consumers have improved nutrient intakes USDA and Haas Avocado Board A new analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, compared avocado consumers to non-consumers and found that consuming avocados may be associated with an overall better diet, higher intake of essential nutrients, lower body weight, lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and smaller waist circumference. Insulin and homocysteine levels were lower in the avocado group, as well as a significantly reduced incidence of metabolic syndrome. Homocysteine, when elevated, has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.i Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors that raises the risk for heart disease and other health problems, such as diabetes and stroke.ii The analysis, "Avocado consumption by adults is associated with better nutrient Intake, diet quality, and some measures of adipositywas published in the journal Internal Medicine Review. SUMMARY OF KEY FINDINGS: * Compared to non-consumers, avocado consumers have:   Higher intakes of dietary fiber, total fat, good fats (monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids), vitamins E and C, folate, magnesium, copper and potassium.   Lower intakes of total carbohydrates, added sugars and sodium. * Improved physiologic measures include:   On average, avocado consumers weighed 7.5 lbs less, had a mean BMI of 1 unit less and 1.2 in. smaller waist circumference compared to non-consumers.   Avocado consumers were 33% less likely to be overweight or obese and 32% less likely to have an elevated waist circumference compared to non-consumers.   Incidence of metabolic syndrome was significantly reduced for avocado consumers.       Better quality relationships associated with reduced dementia risk University of East Anglia (UK) Positive social support from adult children is associated with reduced risk of developing dementia, according to a new research published today. Conversely, negative social support is linked with increased risk, according to the 10-year follow-up study carried out by a team of researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA), University College London (UCL), London Metropolitan University and the University of Nottingham. The researchers analysed a decade of data that followed 10,055 core participants from ELSA who were dementia-free at the start of the study. Participants were interviewed every two years and incidence of dementia was identified from self-reports by participants or information given by nominated informants. Positive support was characterised by having a reliable, approachable and understanding relationship with spouses or partners, children and other immediate family. But negative support scores showed stronger effects - an increase of one point in the negative support score led to up to 31 per cent rise in the risk. Negative support was characterised by experiences of critical, unreliable and annoying behaviours from spouses or partners, children and other immediate family.   After spouse passes, death risk from ‘broken heart' rises Rice University In the three-month period following a spouse's death, widows and widowers are more likely to exhibit risk factors linked to cardiovascular illness and death, according to a new study This could make a bereaved spouse more likely to “die of a broken heart,” the researchers say. The study, which appears in Psychoneuroendocrinology, found that individuals who have lost a spouse within the last three months have higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (immune markers that indicate inflammation in the bloodstream) and lower heart rate variability (HRV) compared with non-bereaved individuals who share the sex, age, body mass index, and educational level. Both are factors that increase an individual's risk for cardiac events, including death. The study is the first to demonstrate that bereavement is associated with elevated levels of ex vivo cytokines and lower HRV. “In the first six months after the loss of a spouse, widows/widowers are at a 41 percent increased risk of mortality,” says lead author Chris Fagundes, an assistant professor of psychology in Rice University's School of Social Sciences. “Importantly, 53 percent of this increased risk is due to cardiovascular disease. This study is an important step toward understanding why this is the case by identifying how bereavement gets under the skin to promote morbidity and mortality.” Finally, the bereaved spouses reported 20 percent higher levels of depressive symptoms than the control group. Participants ranged in age from 51 to 80 (average 67.87) and included 22 percent men and 78 percent women. The sex and age of the control group was comparable, and the results were the same when accounting for slight differences in weight and health behaviors.
