Aviation News EASA Issues Airworthiness Directive Over Boeing 787 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 Engine Parts EASA (the European Union Aviation Safety Agency) has issued an updated airworthiness directive (2019-0286R1) for Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The AD pertains to Low Pressure Compressor front cases installed on Boeing 787 airplanes: Engineering analysis has identified that 38 LPC front cases have non-optimal material properties. This could inhibit the intended function of the LPC front case to contain certain engine failures. This condition, if not corrected, could, in case of fan blade failure, lead to high energy debris release, possibly resulting in damage to, and reduced control of, the aeroplane. The corrective action is to remove and replace the fan case for certain serial numbers. However, RR updated the population of affected parts to allow some to remain in service with inspections of LPC front case thickness at 16 locations. Boeing to plead guilty to criminal fraud charge The US Department of Justice and Boeing agreed to the previously reported plea deal. Boeing will plead guilty to a criminal fraud conspiracy charge and pay a criminal fine of $243.6m. The judge has to accept the deal. DOJ pointed out that the deal does not grant immunity to individuals. FAA orders inspection of 2,600 Boeing 737s over oxygen mask issue The passenger service unit oxygen generators can shift out of position due to a problem with a retention strap. The strap adhesive has been found to allow the generators to move. Your Flight Is Delayed. Would More Details Make You Feel Better? United Airlines is sharing a lot of flight delay and cancellation information via mobile alerts, texts, and emails. Columbia and Piasecki Partner on Upgrade for 107-II and CH-46E Helicopters Columbia Helicopters and Piasecki Aircraft Corporation (PiAC) are collaborating on a program to upgrade the Model 107-II tandem rotor helicopter to create a CH-46 107-III variant. Columbia holds the 107-II type certificate and intends to implement a phased series of STCs (supplemental type certificates) to upgrade the engines, introduce modern avionics, and make other improvements. Air travel is getting worse. That's what passengers are telling the US government The DOT received so many complaints in 2023 that it took them until July to compile the numbers. Last year, the DOT received almost 97,000, just about a 13% increase over 2022. About 1.2% of flights were canceled in 2023, compared to 2.3% in 2022.So far this year, cancellations are around 1.3% In 2023, delays were about 21% of all flights, the same as this year. The DOT partly attributed the increase in complaints to greater consumer awareness of how to file a complaint.  Air Travel Service Complaint or Comment Form (Not Related to Airline Safety or Security Issues) How flying got so bad (or did it?) This episode attempts to answer the question… “Are airlines putting dangerous planes into the sky?” Recently, a Boeing 737 Max 9 had a door plug blow out at 16,000 feet, creating a gaping hole that sucked out, among other things…the shirt off the back of a startled teenager. Really, no Really! That incident (along with a few others) reminded us of that Netflix documentary exposing the egregious decline of Boeing, a once great American manufacturer. 2023 was considered a travel nightmare for many and 2024 looks to be no better with shortages of air traffic controllers, pilots, and planes. To enlighten us about the current state of air travel, Jason and Peter invited CNN's, always entertaining - aviation expert and correspondent- Richard Quest. Richard has interviewed every major airline executive and covered the crashes of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, and the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. IN THIS EPISODE: Aviation's surprising “Do Not Pair” list! Safest seat on the aircraft is…? Ailine pilot statistics you hope aren't true. Richard breaks down why Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 & Lion Air Flight 610 went down and what's changed. Why airlines outsource critical maintenance overseas. What happens when a plane depressurizes at 35,000 ft? Are pilots being pushed to the breaking point? True/False: Water and ice on an airplane are safe to drink? Is it possible to be sucked out a broken window? “Sully” Sullenberger's genius! Jason's favorite Seinfeld plane episode. Prepare to navigate the turbulent skies of cybersecurity with Sige Brody, CTO of Optinine, as we unpack the pressing dangers and defenses within the aviation sector. Discover how Optinine's managed cloud computing services are revolutionizing the way airlines protect their most valuable assets, with a focus on robust disaster recovery and business continuity. Our journey will reveal the startling reality that, while commercial airlines protect company data like Fort Knox, their fleets might be flying with a target on their backs due to unencrypted communications and GPS spoofing threats. As the conversation ascends, we examine the tightening mesh of regulations set to envelop European aviation by 2025 and contrast them with the FDA's slower pace. This segment dissects the curious paradox of current cybersecurity measures, where the commercial airline industry's crown jewels remain exposed to potential cyber-attacks. With Sige's guidance, we'll explore inventive solutions to these vulnerabilities, such as how backup software can serve as an early warning system against ransomware by detecting unusual patterns. Finally, we chart a course through the future of aviation cybersecurity, scrutinizing the overhyped nature of zero trust and the expanding roles of IT managers in smaller organizations. We'll touch down on the need for simplified security architectures and the thrilling new frontier of space-based infrastructure, pondering the security implications of satellites and other celestial tech advancements. Sige Brody ensures this episode is a first-class ticket to understanding the complex, ever-evolving realm of aviation cybersecurity. The airline industry is renowned for its safety, but the pandemic threw a curveball into the mix. How did airlines fare in terms of creating a safer travel experience in the wake of the virus, and how did our efforts compare to those of other industries? Ben Baldanza, former CEO of Spirit Airlines returns to share his thoughts on airline safety during and beyond the pandemic.  "The idea is to make flying touchless, with less time spent face to face. The virus will end at some point, but the sense of risk has changed completely." -Ben Baldanza Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode  Why the future of flying is touch-free:  5 years from now touchless check-ins and minimal personal contact will be a norm and will be worthy investments. What the pandemic means for bigger planes:  It could take a couple of years to build back demand. Smaller, narrow-body aircraft such as the Boeing 737 Max, Airbus A320s, and A321s will have an advantage.  How aviation has prioritized safety since the start of the virus:  From the onset of the coronavirus, the aviation industry has done its part in visible safety precautions, from mask mandates to putting up shields at airports. As an industry, we've shown an operational AND biological commitment to safety.   Guest Bio -  Ben Baldanza is an industry veteran. Previously the CEO and President of Spirit Airlines, today he serves as the CEO for Diemacher, LLC, and is an Independent Board Director at JetBlue Airways. Ben is also a Forbes Contributor, co-host of the Airlines Confidential Podcast, and has been featured on multiple platforms including Fox Business News, The Today Show, and CNBC. How can we prevent poor decision-making at a time of stress, when human action can make a real difference? That's what my guest on this episode, Trisha Ferguson, helps to deliver. She's the CEO of Interaction Research Company (IRC), a firm that advises airlines on passenger safety. And more importantly, from my perspective, designs and produces passenger safety cards.I'm interested in the cards because they effortlessly combine artistic design with a high degree of functionality. Not only are they an amazing piece of Compliance design, they're also a critical tool for mitigating Human Risk. Which is why they're a regulatory requirement. If a plane doesn't have safety cards on board, then it's not allowed to take off. That's because one of the biggest risks, when there's an incident on an aircraft, is human - how we react, makes all the difference. So if you were looking for something iconic that neatly summarised Human Risk and my mission to bring behavioural science to compliance, then the airline safety card is probably it. Which is why I wanted to find out more about how the cards are created and approved for use.In our discussion, we explore the history of IRC and how Trisha came to own the company. She explains the complexities involved in making the cards and the factors that need to be considered. We explore the psychology behind the design and the process they go through to get them into planes. Airline Safety Cards are also the inspiration for the soon-to-relaunch www.human-risk.com which will have an airline safety card theme. In this episode of the podcast, Attorney Rosensweig is discussing the case that was filed in federal court by Khairuldeen Makhzoomi against Southwest Airlines, after he was removed from a flight in 2016.  At the time, Makhzoomi was 26 years old, a student at UC Berkley, an Iraqi refugee and American citizen.  The night before the flight, Makhzoomi had attended a UN event and was able to ask a question of the Secretary General regarding Iraq trying to liberate people in Mosul from ISIS.   When he boarded the plane, he called his uncle in Iraq to tell him about the exciting events from the night before.  A woman sitting in front of him heard him speaking in Arabic and thought she heard him say a word that means "Martyr" in her own language.  She became concerned so she reported him.  He was then removed from the plane for questioning and, according to him, a Southwest agent told him that he should not be speaking "that language" on the plane and that he would not be taking that flight.  After being patted down by police, sniffed by a K-9 and questioned by the FBI, he was finally released and left to find another way home.  Makhzoomi, after not receiving an apology from Southwest filed suit and Southwest tried to dismiss the case, arguing that Makhzoomi failed to show that he was discriminated against in any way.  Was Makhzoomi prevented from taking the flight because of “Islamophobia,” or was it simply a matter of Southwest believing there was a legitimate safety risk in having him take the flight? Did Makhzoomi admit to a Southwest employee that he said the words bomb, jihad (holy war), shahidi (martyr) and ISIS on that call with his uncle or was that completely fabricated by the employee who made the call to keep him off the plane?  Also, does it matter that the employee who decided to keep Makhzoomi off the flight is also Arabic speaking and a devout Muslim?  What about the argument that airline employees are immune from liability as long as they can show that they are acting due to a safety concern?  Ms. Rosensweig is discussing all of this and more in this episode.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a US airline safety regulator, banned certain models of MacBook Pro units from flights. The ban means that travelers can no longer bring the affected devices aboard airplanes in either carry-on or checked-in bags. According to the FAA, the ban was issued because of concerns that units of this laptop model may contain lithium batteries, which might pose fire hazards or other dangers. Back in June, Apple recalled several MacBook Pro devices that had lithium batteries and were sold between September 2015 and February 2017 because of overheating issues. The FAA warned travelers that if the battery of these devices explodes inside an airplane's cargo section, it may spread fire to other parts of the plane. Affected MacBook Pro units can be checked by entering a device's serial number on the Apple website. If a computer turns out to be one of the affected units, Apple Service Providers or Apple retail stores will replace the unit's battery for free. Meanwhile, newer or different-sized MacBook Pro devices may still be brought in flights as long as they comply with the FAA's rules. However, it is still up for debate how the FAA plans to enforce the ban since affected MacBook Pro units are difficult to spot and are almost identical to unaffected ones. On another note, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency also released a warning about these potentially hazardous MacBook Pro units last August. According to a European airline conglomerate, its airport staff and flight crew will announce the MacBook Pro ban at airport gates and before takeoff. However, the ban exempts MacBook Pro units with new or replaced batteries.
