Stocks around the globe fell for a third day and bond yields rose, as traders trimmed their bets on rate cuts by the Fed after stronger-than-expected US retail sales data. Fed swaps are now showing the probability of a rate cut in March at just 58%, versus 90% for May. Carsten Menke, Head of Next Generation Research, gives an update on industrial metals and the Chinese economy. Considerada una de las más grandes escritoras de su generación y una de las voces clave de la literatura latinoamericana contemporánea, Gabriela Cabezón Cámara nació en la provincia de Buenos Aires, en 1968. Ejerció múltiples oficios -desde vender seguros de auto en la calle hasta el diseño gráfico y el periodismo cultural- y fue titular del Laboratorio de Experimentación de la carrera Artes de la Escritura de la Universidad Nacional de las Artes. Actualmente dicta talleres de escritura creativa. Es autora de las nouvelles Le viste la cara a Dios (2011) y Romance de la Negra Rubia (2014), y de las novelas La Virgen Cabeza (2009) y Las aventuras de la China Iron, finalista en la Short List del International Booker Prize (2020) y del Prix Medicis (2021). Su obra ha sido traducida a diversas lenguas. Random House acaba de publicar la nueva y esperada novela de Gabriela, Las niñas del naranjel, en la que la escritora reconstruye desde la ficción la singular figura de la vasca Catalina de Erauso (1592-1650), conocida como la Monja Alférez, legendaria mujer que vivió y trabajó como varón, con diversos nombres, en el siglo XVII. En su novela, el protagonista es Antonio, quien luego una vida plagada de peripecias y viajes, se salva de la horca y huye a internarse en la selva con dos niñitas indígenas y desnutridas, un perro, dos monos y dos caballos. La historia tiene un presente y un pasado; hay una narración en tercera persona y hay también una en primera. Es la voz del protagonista, que se lee a través de una carta que le escribe a su tía, una religiosa que se ocupó de su crianza cuando aún era una nena. En esa carta permanentemente interrumpida, Antonio le cuenta en detalle sus aventuras y lo que ha sido de él desde que abandonó el convento donde vivían y decidió convertirse en hombre. A partir de esta particular figura histórica, Cabezón Cámara crea una particular mirada sobre la Conquista que, lejos de ser pasado, explota de presente por su abordaje lírico de temas como el ambientalismo y temáticas indígenas, feministas y LGBT. Los lectores de Cabezón Cámara, acostumbrados a su experimentación con el humor y los géneros literarios y humanos y a su capacidad para la relectura de los clásicos, esta vez encontrarán un trabajo monumental sobre la picaresca y también sobre la lengua del Siglo de Oro, a la que el talento de Gabriela logra a la vez homenajear y transgredir por medio de su desmesurada orfebrería, que esta vez cruza las formas del español de las crónicas de Indias con el guaraní. En la sección En voz alta Malena Higashi leyó un fragmento de “Cuaderno de faros”, de Jazmina Barrera. Malena nació en Buenos Aires en 1984. Se formó en Letras y en la sede argentina de la escuela Urasenke. En 2017 viajó a Kioto para profundizar sus estudios de ceremonia del té en la Urasenke Gakuen Professional College of Chadô. Hoy se dedica a difundir esta disciplina y la cultura japonesa a través de encuentros de té, talleres, curaduría y artículos periodísticos. Escribe el newsletter “Un Japón propio” y dirige el ciclo mensual de entrevistas que lleva el mismo nombre. Publicó por la editorial Fiordo el libro “El viento entre los pinos. Un ensayo acerca del camino del té”. En el Bibliotecas, Nicolás Hochman nos destacó los libros “La sangre de la autora”, de Claudia Salazar Jiménez, “Si yo fuera puta”, de Amara Moira y “Mi madre es un pájaro”, de Diego Tomasi, tres autores que estuvieron en el Festival Desmadres Nicolás Hochman escribe, edita y hace producción cultural. Es profesor y licenciado en Historia y doctor en Ciencias Sociales (UBA), con un posgrado en Gestión Cultural (FLACSO). Fundó el Congreso Gombrowicz y dirige Desmadres, festival de literatura latinoamericana. Integró los equipos de Lamujerdemivida y el Grupo Alejandría. Dio clases en universidades e institutos de Argentina, México y Polonia, y desde 2010 coordina Heterónimos, un taller de lectura y escritura.

Nickel dropped down to the bottom end of $20-$22,000 range that we've largely been in since the beginning of May – dragged lower along with the rest of the base metal complex as China deflation concerns weighed on the market.  LME inventories are still low.According to statistics from the Stainless Steel Branch of China Iron and Steel Association, China's crude stainless steel production amounted to around 17.59 million tons in the first half of this year, up by 8.2% compared to the same period a year ago.  Among them, the output of Cr-Ni stainless steel (300 series) accounted for the largest proportion at 50.33%, totalling around 8.85 million tons, a year-on-year hike of 11.1%.  (we thought China was slowing down) - seeing cuts in the first half in ROW production after a big surge in 2021/22, but now seeing a turn in the West as well.  Analysts always underestimate stainless growth. Still not seeing any further momentum in nickel sulphate in China, but seeing more nickel directly utilized (in the form of MHP/matte) and more high nickel cathode material produced in Korea.FPX Nickel saw a big drop this week – down by 33% on news that one of the First Nations (FN) groups has made public communications from Tl'azt'en Nation with respect to the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) between Tl'azt'en Nation, family Keyoh Holders, and FPX, and concerns expressed related to resource development.The team at FPX have done a very good job responsibly advancing the project, but sometimes best efforts can't change the view of the local community.  The original 2012 group split into several groups – which may have different views on resource development. Elections in FN communities typically every 2-3 years so can have multiple leadership groups to deal with during the lifespan of the project (think with my old Dumont project, we had 5 different chiefs over 10 years).  The new chief came in a year ago and may be a catalyst for change, maybe another change in the future.Permitting/First Nations risk is real – even the best management team/approach can do everything 100% right, but the community may not want resource development. Encourage every investor to look at First Nations/permitting risk – not just to country, province, but the specific region – look at whether any mines operating in the area, have any operated before, and search for public comments on mining activity in the area. Can always be the first new mine in an area, but comes with lots of risks and need to manage accordingly.This is always been a key concern – 4 major assets that I've been involved with have been in established mining areas - Abitibi Quebec (Dumont), Abitibi area of Ontario (Crawford), Kalgoorlie (Beta Hunt), Manitoba/Snow Lake (Reed).  The Metals Company (TMC) stock has moved significantly higher over the last 2 months and just completed $27 million financing (think highlighted back in June that smaller scale start-up using existing Japanese processing capacity provides a lower capex path to production).  The Metals Company aims to apply next year for a licence to start mining in the Pacific Ocean, with production expected to start as early as the fourth quarter of 2025, it said in a statement.Magna Mining put out some nice drill holes this AM and has been busy retracing about 50% of what it gave up after the PEA announcement.101 FW ZoneMCR-23-041: 3.0% Ni, 0.7% Cu, 1.2 g/t Pt + Pd + Au over 31.6 metresMCR-23-042: 4.2% Ni, 1.4% Cu, 1.0 g/t Pt + Pd + Au over 27.6 metresGood results but would asterisk them a little bit – when historic drilling – look for step out versus infill, unless filling in some pretty wide gaps.  These holes look like in between 22-003 and 22-005 drilled earlier this year which in turn were between 1003080 and 1003090 and 1163050At the other end of step out level, our neighbour in Timmins, Aston Minerals, has started off their 2023 drilling season with some 500 metre step-outs in their B2 zone which in turn is more than 2 kilometres away from their initial Boomerang resource of 2.5 million tonnes of nickel.On the lithium-nickel front, Widgie Nickel got approval to mine its Faraday lithium deposit – will ship ore to one of the local lithium mines to be processed.Azure Minerals (nickel developer turned lithium developer) turned down $600 million offer from SQM.

Premiado, celebrado, convocado siempre en todo evento literario de calidad, el mexicano Juan Villoro es uno de los más grandes escritores latinoamericanos. Cronista deslumbrante, narrador, guionista y dramaturgo, su prosa se resiste a los encasillamientos y nunca deja de sorprender su destreza con la palabra y, sobre todo, su asombrosa pasión por el relato. Nacido en México en 1956, Villoro estudió Sociología en la UNAM y fue agregado cultural en la Embajada de México en Berlín Oriental, dentro de la entonces República Democrática Alemana, de 1981 a 1984. Académico, editor de suplementos culturales y conductor de radio, columnista de grandes diarios del mundo, entre sus libros se cuentan, entre otros, las novelas El disparo de argón, El testigo y Arrecife. Los libros de cuentos: Los culpables y La casa pierde o los ensayos de Efectos personales, además de textos de literatura infantil y juvenil como El fuego tiene vitaminas. Publicado por Fondo de Cultura Económica y Almadía, su último libro, Examen extraordinario, es una antología compuesta por catorce cuentos de los cuales solo dos son nuevos, los otros fueron publicados en diversas compilaciones a lo largo de los últimos 30 años. Se trata de un volumen en el que el autor se pone a prueba, como dice el escritor en el prólogo, un ejercicio valioso para los lectores de Villoro por lo que significa volver a leer estos textos pero también una ocasión ideal para quienes quieren abordar la obra de un escritor versátil y atractivo, para quien todo texto es una gran oportunidad para contar una buena historia.
